Moscow - St. Petersburg

The classical tour of Moscow and Saint Petersburg is designed for tourists, who just start their acquaintance with Russia and its two treasures — the biggest cities, Moscow, the capital, and Saint Petersburg, the cultural center and the cradle of architectural and gems of tsar époque. The classical program usually takes from 5 to 8 days and can be adapted in intensity depending on how much free time you would like to have in addition to excursions.

day 1 Welcome to Russia!

Our driver meets you at the airport (or railway station). Watch out for your name on a signboard the driver will hold. Don’t worry if your flight is coming late: we are monitoring the actual schedule of each customer and you can be sure we are aware of the delays, and your driver is waiting for you patiently.

After you arrive at your hotel, we can either give you time to have a rest and deal with jet-lag or take you to your first tour where you will see Moscow in its night-lighted beauty.

day 2 Panoramic tour of Moscow and the Kremlin

tour de plan restaurant

Together with the guide, who is most likely to become a great company for you for the next couple of days, and the driver, responsible for your comfortable transportation during the tour, you are going to see Moscow, learn about its history and make photo-stops. You will see the beautiful Red Square, the landmark of Moscow and Russia; watch the picturesque panorama from the Sparrow Hills; enjoy the view of the magnificent MSU building, walk down the elegant Nikolskaya street and shop around GUM — posh and exquisite oldest shopping center of Moscow.

Our guide will show you the best places to have lunch. Tell them about your preference and you will be taken to a sweet cosy cafeteria or a high-end restaurant. We do not normally include meal prices in the individual package so that you could have a wider choice of places and meals that you can pay for on the spot.

After lunch, get ready to immerse into the earliest Russian history. The Moscow Kremlin tour is about heritage, art, culture, and religion — and, of course, the pleasure of your eyes. Our packages include the visit of the territory of Kremlin and two cathedrals of three. You can also choose the extras: a visit to the Diamond Fund, Armory, or Saint Basil’s Cathedral, located on the Red Square just a few minutes walk.

Usually, our second day ends after the Kremlin tour and we take you back to your hotel.

day 3 Get closer to Russian art: The Tretyakov Gallery

tour de plan restaurant

Be ready to wake up early today if you book the optional tour to Moscow metro and the Old Arbat: Why should you choose it? The essential part of the travel is to feel the vibe of the life of locals and traveling by metro followed by the stroll down the favorite pedestrian street of the Muscovites. This is a fully walking tour, so make sure you can walk on long distances; it will take approximately three hours. The metro tour will start at the station closest to your accommodation place — near the station or at your hotel if it is located within walking distance from a station. You will see the impressive stations designed like the palaces: Ploschad Revolutsii, Komsomolskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Teatralnaya, and the others. This tour is only available in the morning according to the excursion committee of the metro regulations, so don’t oversleep! The next point is the beautiful pedestrian street Old Arbat. Here you can have lunch, take beautiful pictures and do some shopping, or just walk down the busy street, so loved by youth and tourists.

The main tour of the day is about art and you will definitely enjoy it: there is hardly a person who cannot find a catching thing for them in the famous Tretyakov Gallery, the greatest collection of Russian fine art. There you will see the most significant pieces of art, known by every Russian from a schooler to an expert. The classic tour includes the visit to the division of classical art, but if you also want to get acquainted with modern style paintings, don’t forget to book an extra tour to another building of the Tretyakov Gallery.

day 4 Open the window to Europe: transfer to St Petersburg

tour de plan restaurant

Have a hearty breakfast before you start: today you are going to travel 750 kilometers to visit another brilliant Russian city. We offer you to try the unique experience with Russian Railways and take an overnight brand train with sleeping berths; you can choose between 4-berths and 2-berths compartments; hot meals and bed linen for your comfortable overnight journey are included!

Before the train, you have plenty of time, so why not take another extra tour of Pushkin museum, with its enormous collection of sculptures, paintings, art, and other items of different epochs.

In the afternoon, you are collected from the hotel and dropped off at the railway station. During your trip between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, you are not having a guide, but the friendly staff will help you with any questions.

day 5 Arrival to Saint Petersburg and the city tour

tour de plan restaurant

In the early morning, your train arrives at the main railway station of Saint Petersburg. Your guide is already here, waiting for you with a signboard. People in the city are in a hurry to their jobs and you can take your time, enjoying the views of this true tzar city. The city tour, organized upon arrival before you check it, will show you the main square of the city — Palace square, Vasilievsky island with its rostral columns, and aesthetical architectural monuments of the 18th century. Everyone will find enjoyment during the tour: history lovers will learn more about the Russian culture, art enthusiasts — find out the unique architectural objects, and the Instagram addicts will definitely enrich their accounts with the new stunning pictures with city views.

After the tour, you check-in to your hotel and have spare time for the rest of the day.

day 6 World-famous museum: Visit the Hermitage

tour de plan restaurant

Get ready to walk a lot today! It’s time to explore the gem of Saint Petersburg and its main lair of the world art objects: the Hermitage. The guided tour allows you to skip the enormous lines and see as much as possible in a three hours tour. It would take many years to explore each item of the Hermitage, so the tour is focused on the most famous paintings and sculptures: Rembrandt’s Danaya, Gainsborough’s Woman in Blue, Matisse’s Dance, The Peacock Clock, and the others.

day 7 Tour of Pushkin: Catherine Palace and Park

tour de plan restaurant

This is the most desired part of the tour for many visitors: today you have an opportunity to visit the legendary Amber room in the Catherine Palace, located 25 km away from Saint Petersburg. With the help of the driver, your guide takes you to the town of Pushkin and shows the impressive summer residence of Russian emperors. The Amber Room is a gem: it is a chamber, fully decorated with amber and gold; it is the unexceptionable reconstruction of the missed genuine Amber room. If there is no chance to get in the Catherine Palace (sometimes there are too many requests), it is replaced with the amber workshop, where you have a chance to work on your own piece of amber and have a glass of sparkling champagne as the cherry on a pie. In addition, the trip includes walking around Catherine park, a piece of landscape design art.

day 8 Goodbye Russia! Departure transfer

tour de plan restaurant

Today the journey comes to its end; if you want to have the most of your last day, book the tour of Peterhof, if time allows. It is usually called a Russian Versaille for its fountains layout and complex of sculptures; the Great Palace visit is also included in the tour. The whole assembly holds the spirit of the Tsars epoque and is a great place for walking, taking pictures, and learning more about the emperors' time of Russia and Saint Petersburg.

After the tour, you are delivered directly to the airport for your return flight, or to the hotel — if you need a transfer later.

The 8 Best Restaurants in Moscow

From the traditional to the modern, fine dining destinations in Moscow celebrate the best that Russian cuisine has to offer.

By Elite Traveler

With many of the best restaurants in Moscow also doubling as bars and clubs, the atmosphere is nearly always one step away from a party, and many of the city’s elite come dressed to impress. Of course, there are still many elegant and family friendly restaurants for those who prefer a quieter evening. With such a large selection available, Elite Traveler has compiled a suitable list for diners of all persuasions.

Café Pushkin

Designed to recreate the feel of a 19th century aristocrat’s house, Café Pushkin has become one of the most popular restaurants in Moscow, thanks to the quality of its food, impeccable service and the excellent vodka selection. The atmosphere of pre-Revolution Russia is delightfully charming, from the flowery script of the menu to aristocratic country house décor. Pushkin is the ideal destination if you want to be treated like Russian nobility and dine like a Tsar – but book ahead, the restaurant’s popularity requires reservation well in advance.

cafe-pushkin.ru

Lavishly decked out with chandeliers and hand-painted furniture, the menu selection may come as a surprise to first-time guests, with options ranging from Pi Pa duck with melon and truffle to beefsteak with foie gras. Turandot puts a French spin on pan-Asian cuisine, and does so with incredible style and boldness. Whilst the interior décor is certainly to be marvelled at, it is the thoughtfully conceptualized and perfectly executed menu options that make for an incredible dining experience.

Azerbaijan, dubai and beyond: fairmont expands luxury portfolio, fairmont to expand to moscow.

When the Ginza Project, a company that owns some of the finest restaurants in Moscow, announced that they would be opening a restaurant on the 29th floor of Radisson Royal Hotel, the excitement and anticipation was palpable.

The company has a reputation for the high quality of its restaurants that grace the streets of the capital, and Buono is no exception. The views from Buono are unashamedly spectacular, while the décor is elegant, with soft creams complementing the fine views on offer. The food is classical Italian; Chef William Lamberti is well known throughout Europe and has created an excellent menu. It’s always best to book ahead at Buono, as the window seats that offer the finest views over the city are quickly taken.

Italian for ‘small’, Piccolino is a cozy, homely restaurant – something of a rarity in Moscow.

Serving typical Italian food, the family friendly establishment is laid back, but this doesn’t compromise the quality of the food: good, hearty portions that are exceptionally tasty. The interior of Piccolino has been designed to replicate that of a large country house, and the décor is entirely fitting with the atmosphere of the restaurant. In a city where many of the establishments value the names of their guests over the quality of their dishes, Piccolino is the place to come if your preference is quality of food rather than famous faces.

Twin Gardens

With two tasting menus and an à la carte option, the Twin Gardens at the heart of Moscow caters to any palette. With the restaurant concept based on the symbiosis of science and nature, their Vegetables set menu explores all manner of produce from seedling to peeling, delicately plated in a tasteful homage to the natural life cycle of wild plants and flowers. For more adventurous types, their Rediscover Russia menu offers a culinary tour of various local specialties found in provinces across the vast continent. They also have a wide selection of Russian wines.

OAK HALL, CDL

Located in an elegant 19th century mansion, CDL is one of the most sophisticated restaurants in Moscow.

The interior has been gorgeously designed to recreate the grandeur of the Silver Age of Russian culture, with antique balustrades and bas-reliefs throughout the Oak Hall main room. The staircase in the Oak Hall is a particular masterpiece; it was built without a single nail or screw. The fireplace is equally impressive and has been used as a meeting room by President Dmitry Medvedev. Guests can also hire additional rooms such as the Cigar Room and the Cabinet Room. A menu of authentic Russian cuisine has been created by top chef Alexander Popov, with organic dishes bursting with flavor and a splendor to match the opulent surroundings. With so much luxury and class on display, it’s little wonder that former US Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush have chosen to dine here. Situated in the center of the city between Bolshaya Nikitskaya 53 and Povarskaya Ulitsa 50, it’s worth booking ahead to avoid disappointment.

White Rabbit

With a domed window inviting soaring views of the Moscow cityscape, White Rabbit has recently undergone extensive renovations, to both its interior and its menu. Renowned architect Natalia Belonogova has transformed the restaurant into an airy, modern space, perfected by the addition of a summer veranda. To connect the dining options with the new interior, head chef Vladimir Mukhin has created a new menu, Metamorphoses, to reflect the lifecycle of the mayfly butterfly.

Delight your palette with scallop, strawberries and blackcurrant or, for dessert, dandelion honey with melted cottage cheese. This summerlike and refreshing menu has its roots in Russian soil and its head in the clouds above Moscow’s skyline.

One of the best places to see and be seen, the O2 Lounge is half stylish seafood restaurant and half trendy pre-club hangout.

The food on offer is delicious Japanese fare, with sumptuous sushi prepared in front of diners by the team of talented chefs led by Nicholas Courtois. Located on the 12th floor of the Ritz-Carlton hotel, the restaurant has spectacular panoramic views over Red Square and The Kremlin. After dark the restaurant becomes one of the coolest bars in town, with award-winning cocktails and a selective wine list.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. They offer a choice of two starters ,two mains and one desert for €19.90 which is fantastic value for fresh ,well cooked food against the other village restaurants who offer... a main course on its own for @15 to 20. Going with friends again next week………for lunch…. P.s.really nice terrace sitting amongst trees …… More

We stumbled upon this restaurant the first day of our holiday in Plan de la Tour, and how lucky that was! Since then it’s been a our lunch spot everyday. They offer a fixed price menu for €19.90 each day that includes a starter, a... main course with side and a dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious! We also tasted dishes from the main menu and these were excellent. The ambience is relaxed and friendly and service was always attentive. Both staff and owners were welcoming, often stopping by to greet us. I can’t recommend this place enough, and I want to give a special mention to Salvatore also known as Laurent who treated us like family. Thank you!!!! More

The restaurand is located at the very nice village of plan de la Tour. We had diner their outside in the garden. nice surrounding. Staff kind and helpful. The food was good. Tuna Tataki and poulp as appetizer and then steak tartare with french fries... and Fish with rice, Chocolate Prifiterolles and chocolate Cake and the very Nice Rosé " des Marquets" Vinery located just a few miles away. I come to this part of France every year and one of the highlights is a meal at La Tour du Plan. It's been owned by various people over the years but has always maintained high standards until now. First of all the surly staff... informed us that two of the main course dishes on a small menu were off. No lamb, no duck. This was just as the restaurant opened for evening service, not at the end of the night!! My pate de foie gras was perfectly acceptable. Difficult to get wrong mind. My colleague's vegetable linguini was over salted and barely warm. The beef, just about the only meat left on the menu, was nicely cooked. However the vegetables were again over salted and the Dauphinois were pre cooked and "nuked" in the microwave!! The dish also came with crispy seaweed, or cabbage as we know it. What was that doing on a French dish in a French restaurant!! Sadly I have to say I won't be going back. Also they need to sort out the front of house. The welcoming was warm and friendly but the waiting staff are rude and indifferent. Lastly can I say I don't normally leave bad reviews. If a place isn't good I usually say nothing. But this is one of my favourite restaurants gone bad. More

Amazing cuisine, full of flavours. The terrace is pleasant and well shaded. The service is fast and the team is really super friendly

Also this time we were not disappointed by our periodic visit to this charming little restaurant. Crab starter is very nice and the Rossini filletwith Ceps really tasty, tender and perfectly cooked. Crunchy vegetables and the mashed potatoes perfect for the sauce. Tatin and passion... fruit sablé win the palm for best desserts. And lunch time weekdays you also get great deals. More

In the small village of 'Plan de la tour' on the edge of the center this restaurant has a very nice setting with in door and out door dining. not one of the cheapest in the village but nicely presented food and helpful english speaking... staff, a wide variety on the menu, good chose of wine, you are not rushed to eat, it was my birthday and we were with friends, so loads of chat and good food and wine. This has for many years now been our family favourite in the village but for the last couple of years we had found the quality had gone down a little. This year there has been a turnaround : the service has improved again and the... food is also on the up: good foie gras and lamb shank, good fish but one of the servings was a little dry. So we'll be going back in the future... More

Having read all the excellent reviews we decided to book this restaurant for my Husband's birthday. On arriving at the restaurant we were sat in the lovely garden area and looked forward to celebrating a wonderful evening. From the very beginning we were disappointed. We... ended up waiting 20 minutes to be offered a menu or a drink. When we had finally been given a menu we ordered the octopus salad which arrived swimming in olive olive, and so the whole dish tasted bitter. As the evening wore on my littlest child accidentally knocked over a glass and despite him crying his eyes out and being visibly upset, no assistance was offered and we ended up clearing this up ourselves. A terrible evening. More

Delightful terrace and excellent lunch menu. Very good value. Very friendly and helpful staff. Pity about bad mannered dog owners who feed their pets from the table - however, not the fault of the restaurant.

The food was very good and the right quantity. Staff friendly and we had one of the local red wines which complimented the meal.

We came here last year and just had to return again this year. The food and service are the best you'll find at this price. Food was art. We’re treated wonderfully. Ambiance was spot on. There is seating inside and out and parking one minute... walk away. Is in a quiet village 15 mins drive from Sainte-Maxine. Can't recommend it enough. More

An institution in Plan de la Tour, the owner seems to know personally all his client or at least he makes it his duty to discuss with each of them several times during the diner. Excellent wine and excellent food!

The restaurant is set in a lovely location in Plan de la Tour. Despite being busy on the evening we visited staff were very attentive and helpful. We started with a drink in the bar before being seated in their restaurant gardens, a lovely environment... away from crowds and traffic. Something rarely available, we were able to choose from the full menu, fixed price based on either 3 or 2 courses, offering either a starter and main or main and dessert option. My husband chose the 3 courses starting with Tuna, my daughter and I opted for 2 courses, main and dessert. Food was beautifully presented and very tasty as well as being good value for money. A thoroughly enjoyable evening and we will definitely return on our next visit. More

This is a fantastic, charming restaurant in the village. The service is excellent and the owner makes a point to welcome each and every guest. The food is super tasty and exactly what you expect in the region. Fresh produce cooked and prepared with love.... You get served a little aperitif upon arrival which is a great touch and makes you feel immediately valued and welcomed. Due to all the above, the restaurant is always packed so I would highly recommend to book. Seriously, go and enjoy some great food, atmosphere and - if you are lucky - amazing stories of the owner's colorful past! More

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

The exhibits on display look at the life of the empress as well as the history of Tsaritsyno itself. The huge palace grounds are also home to some other delightful buildings with the elegant opera house and wonderful brickwork of the Small Palace being particularly impressive to gaze upon.

VDNKh

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

With lots of eateries scattered about and numerous entertainment options such as horse-riding and zip-lining, there is something for everyone to enjoy; the Friendship of Nations fountain truly is wonderful.

15. Kremlin Armoury

Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

14. GUM Department Store

GUM Department Store

Standing for ‘Main Universal Store’ in Russian, GUM is stunning. Its wonderful skylights and beautiful facades mean it doesn’t look out of place alongside its illustrious neighbors on Red Square.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

Moscow Metro

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Decked in marble and with frescoes covering the walls, the stations are amazing to gaze upon and are part of one of the longest metro systems in the world, with the first stations opened in 1935.

Using the metro is the quickest and easiest way to get around Moscow and braving the crowds of commuters is well worth it for the beauty all around you.

12. Arbat Street

Arbat Street

An elegant yet lively street, Arbat is full of impressive architecture and was once a popular place to live for aristocrats, artists, and academics.

A historic place, it is down Arbat Street that Napoleon’s troops are said to have headed on their way to capture the Kremlin.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery

Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

6. Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoye

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

The gorgeous Rosewood Hotels & Resorts mainstay features massive suites ranging in price from $4,600 to $21,000 per night depending on the accommodation’s size and layout.

The late Karl Lagerfeld designed the residential-style guest rooms, which offer “an incomparable atmosphere of contemporary sophistication that respects the landmark’s 18th-century heritage.”

Spacious en suite bathrooms are immaculately designed with marble finishes and full-size soaking tubs for ultimate relaxation.

Turandot Restaurant

Turandot Restaurant and Social Club

Turandot was named after an Italian opera set in China. It followed the story of Prince Calaf, who fell in love with the cold Princess Turandot. In order to win her hand in marriage, the suitor was required to solve three riddles, with a wrong answer resulting in his execution. Calaf passed the test, but Turandot refused to marry him. He offered her a way out: if she was able to guess his name before dawn the next day, he would accept death.

The site is located in a mansion that was previously owned by Catherine the Great. At the beginning of a lengthy six-year construction process, only the building’s facade remained in tact. A Soviet-era fronting of brick and concrete had to be removed in order to begin the delicate restoration process. Several hundred artisans, sculptors, and artists were employed to design and craft all the wooden panels, bronze décor elements and lighting units, stucco of alabaster and plaster moldings, mosaic parquet, decorative paintings, crystal chandelier pendants, carved furniture and porcelain tableware. The rest of the interior items were produced by the Russian, French, English and Italian manufactures specially for Turandot by original sketches. Numerous antique items were acquired in order to contribute to the setting. Nothing was spared in the decor of Turandot – the hand painted chairs and tables, the tapestries and frescoes on the walls and ceilings, the costumes of the waiting staff, and the special order Turandot dinnerware.

Turandot was financed by the Stoly family and opened through the employment of prominent Russian entrepreneurs, restaurateurs, professional architects and a fine art restorer. It is located on Tverskaya Boulevard, about a 5-10 minute drive to the northwest of the Kremlin within Moscow’s central district. From the entrance facing the Boulevard, one enters a huge, white marble Italian courtyard, and then the circular, two-story dining area, on each floor surrounded by a series of small private dining rooms. Beneath the elaborately detailed and hand-painted, high cupola ceiling, bewigged and costumed chamber musicians perform classical music, opening the evening with  Nessun Dorma . Belying initial impressions from the decor and costumes, the cuisine is Pan-Asian.

A man's social media post has gone viral (it's been viewed more than six million times) after it showed him being quoted £786.80 for two return train tickets from Newcastle to London.

X user Lee later clarified the tickets were for a Tuesday to Thursday trip in seven days time.

A screenshot of the quote showed the tickets he was trying to purchase were anytime single tickets, which had been advertised on the website as the "cheapest" option.

"Are you out of your actual minds?" Lee said in his post.

Other social media users were just as shocked, with many also complaining about increased fares.

"I book train travel for work colleagues and it's eye watering.. if it was cheap to use public transport, as it is in other countries, more people would use it," one replied.

"We live an hour away from London and train tickets on the weekend can set us back over £100 each. So then we drive which is the total opposite of what public transport is supposed to encourage?" said another.

Rail tickets increased by 4.9% in England and Wales in March.

An LNER spokesperson told the Money team: "We haven’t been provided with the full details for this journey. However, it appears the prices quoted are for peak time travel during a period of very high demand.

"Alternative trains have much cheaper Advance and 70 Minute Flex tickets available for travel in Standard from Newcastle to London King's Cross, subject to seating capacity being available.

"We always encourage customers to book as early as possible for best value fares."

Barclays has significantly increased its rates across a wide range of its purchase and remortgage deals.

Many of the major lender's deals are increasing by around 0.25%.

This includes its two-year fixed rate for remortgage at 60% loan to value, which will rise from 4.61% to 4.86%, which comes with a £999 fee.

Its two-year fixed rate for purchase or remortgage at 75% loan to value will also rise from 4.75% to 5.05%, and comes with a £1,999 fee.

The increases come at a time when several other lenders, such as TSB and Santander, have started cutting rates.

Respected predictor Cornwall Insight has a final prediction for tomorrow's energy price cap announcement.

Based on wholesale costs, the cap is expected to fall to £1,574.37 per year for a typical dual-fuel household - a 7% decrease.

The current price cap sits at £1,690 a year for a typical household.

In October 2021, the last time the cap was set before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was £1,277 per year.

Here's what else you need to know...

We'll be hearing tomorrow morning what the new energy price cap will be from July.

The cap is controlled by energy regulator Ofgem and aims to prevent households on variable tariffs being ripped off.

It doesn't represent a maximum bill. Instead it creates an average bill by limiting how much you pay per unit of gas and electricity, as well as setting a maximum daily standing charge (which all households must pay to stay connected to the grid).

It changes every three months - in January, April, July and October.

The changes are mostly based on the costs faced by suppliers for providing energy.

Who is covered by the energy price cap?

Most households will be covered by the energy price cap.

You'll know your bills are price-capped if you're on a standard variable tariff.

The owner of Toblerone, Milka and Oreo has been fined €337.5m (£288m) for anti-competitive practices in the EU.

Mondelez, which is one of the world's biggest confectionary companies, was found to have been involved in 22 unfair trade practices by the EU's competition commissioner.

In some instances, wholesalers, shoppers and traders were prevented from buying chocolate bars in another member state where they could be up to 40% cheaper or selling into a market where they could get a higher price for their product.

The EU's competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said it was "blatantly illegal".

She said the EU's investigation found customers were paying higher prices for chocolates, biscuits and coffee because of the practices.

A worrying proportion of households are experiencing problems with their smart meters, research from Citizens Advice suggests.

The charity has said energy companies are failing to fix problems with meters, with roughly 20% of households with a smart meter still having to regularly submit meter readings because their device isn't doing so automatically.

It warned people could end up with huge unexpected bills if their supplier isn't able to take an automatic reading for an extended period of time.

In one instance, a 71-year-old man was landed with a shock catch-up bill of almost £5,000.

Franc Kolar said he had been assured by his supplier the meter would work in his home, and this was the main reason he switched to them.

Current rules allow suppliers to back bill customers for a whole year, whether they have a smart meter or not.

Government figures show by the end of last year more than 10% of smart meters weren't working properly.

However Citizens Advice said this is "just the tip of the iceberg".

"The whole point of smart meters is to empower households to save energy and money, but in reality millions are missing out on those benefits due to problems with technology and poor supplier service," said the charity's chief executive, Dame Clare Moriarty.

"Energy companies are very keen for customers to get a smart meter but when issues arise they are often nowhere to be found. That has to change."

Nationwide has revealed it will give its customers a share of a £385m cash pot.

Those who are eligible will receive a £100 payment directly into their bank accounts as part of the Nationwide Fairer Share scheme, which aims to reward customers who meet certain criteria.

Customers will need to hold a qualifying current account and either a qualifying saving or mortgage product.

You will have need to have held the account since 31 March or earlier, and have the account still open in June.

The building society will be contacting customers between now and the end of May, and the payment will be sent out automatically.

Parsing out whether there's been any market election reaction is tricky given the big economic news yesterday - we learned inflation fell sharply (but was still higher than forecast) and the UK government borrowed the fourth largest amount in any April since records began.

The pound is still up against the euro - and so buys more of the Eurozone currency than before yesterday morning's economic announcements. It's still at a high not seen since early March with £1 equal to €1.1745.

Sterling has come down from its highs against the dollar seen yesterday morning but is still higher than most of the last month with a pound buying $1.2731.

The FTSE 100 (Financial Times Stock Exchange index of most valuable companies on the exchange) is down again this morning, 0.23%, after a sharp 0.56% drop in response to the inflation data.

The cost of UK government borrowing rose for the second day in a row as the interest rate on the benchmark 10-year government bond rose to 4.276%. Government bonds are IOUs sold on the market to raise funds.

It's a busy morning on the corporate front as many major companies listed on the London Stock Exchange have updated the market and issued full-year results.

The biggest contributor to the FTSE 100 fall was National Grid, the British and US electricity systems operator. In an effort to raise £6.8bn to fund grid investment, it said it would issue new shares and sell its US onshore wind business and a liquefied natural gas terminal.

Online retailer Oh Polly has introduced a new returns policy to clamp down on "repeat refunders".

The fashion site announced customers would be charged based on how much of their order they want to return.

Customers returning up to 50% of their order will be charged £2.99, while those who return more than 90% will be charged £8.99.

The company had previously charged a flat fee of £2.99 for all returns.

Oh Polly explained in an email to customers: "Customers with high return rates increase the cost of the business, and we can either alter prices collectively for all, or only for those who fall into the high returner category."

The UK's competition regulator has issued three tips for pet owners amid concerns they are paying too much on vet bills and are not given enough information about treatment options.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said today it was launching a full market investigation into the UK's veterinary sector.

It advised animal owners to:

  • Shop around for a vet and don't always go to the closest
  • Ask the vet if there are other treatment options
  • Think about buying medication from places other than your vet if it's not an emergency

Ocado has struck a deal with rapid grocery delivery service Getir to acquire its customers, after the latter pulled out of the UK.

Customers who were using Getir are being sent emails urging them to switch to Zoom by Ocado.

They also received a 25%-off discount and free delivery on their first Zoom by Ocado order.

Most younger workers want the chance to have a job in another country, research suggests.

A survey of 1,000 people aged 18-34 found half of respondents would be more likely to stay in a role for longer if they had the option to move overseas for a period of time.

The young people cited a better quality of life, salary and benefits, and better work-life balance, as the main reasons for wanting to move overseas for work, according to employee mobility platform Jobbatical.

"A decade ago, candidates were searching for the most exciting office and work perks possible, but today the draw of international living, better quality of life and smoother work-life balance is top of the wishlist for ambitious, high-quality talent," said Karoli Hindriks, co-founder of Jobbatical.
