Written by Joni Sweet Updated Mar 24, 2023
Jakarta, the bustling capital of Indonesia, is a cultural melting pot. A diverse mix of traditions, from Javanese and Malay to Arab, Indian, and Dutch swirl together in this megalopolis. The result is a dynamic, lively city with its own intriguing flavor.

The Museum Nasional (National Museum) is one of the best places to visit in Jakarta. Located on the western edge of Merdeka Square , this archeological and ethnological attraction boasts a rich collection of around 70,000 artifacts. It's considered to be one of Southeast Asia's best museums.
You don't even need to enter the Museum Nasional to start experiencing its many treasures. The courtyard of the more than 150-year-old building features a peaceful fountain topped by a bronze elephant statue, given by Siam monarch Chulalongkorn to Batavia in 1871. The iconic work inspired the main structure's nickname as the "Elephant Building."
The museum is divided into two distinct wings, each of which boasts its own exhibits. The new wing features four floors of exhibits on culture and human origins in Indonesia. Don't miss the collection of priceless gold jewelry and artifacts from Central Java; the exhibit of stunning rare textiles from around Indonesia; and a model of the "Flores Man," the remains of an early human discovered on the island of Flores in 2013.
A glass-walled bridge connects the new wing to the old wing, where you will find Museum Nasional's renowned collection of classical Hindu-Buddhist statues. One of the highlights is the four-meter-tall carving of Adityawarman, king of Malayapura, standing atop a ring of skulls.
The old wing also contains collections of prehistoric ceramics from around Asia, ancient Indonesian ethnographic tools, relics of the Dutch East India Company, and treasure from royal houses across the archipelago.
Hot tip: There are free English tours of the museum throughout the week, hosted by members of the Indonesian Heritage Society . Check the museum's website for current days and times.
Address: Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat No.12, Gambir, Kecamatan Gambir, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10110

Flying kites has been a tradition in this part of the world for more than 2,000 years, and there's no better place in Jakarta to learn about this heritage than at Museum Layang-Layang, an attraction down a serene alley in Pondok Labu.
A short movie screening in the museum explains the origins of kite flying in Indonesia, as well as the many styles of kites – just the right amount of information tourists need to appreciate the attraction's collection of more than 600 colorful kites.
Look up to see a massive flying horse kite with wings that span the length of the entryway. The museum also displays the head of a fire-breathing dragon kite; a sailing ship that flies; traditional kites made from bamboo and banana leaves; and a wow-worthy 3D kite of a horse-drawn carriage, complete with spinning wheels.
If you're feeling inspired after your tour, you can use materials at the museum to construct your own kite that makes for a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
Address: Jl. H. Kamang No.38, RT.8/RW.10, Pd. Labu, Kec. Cilandak, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12450
Merdeka Square, a 75-hectare park surrounded by lush greenery in Central Jakarta, is the Indonesian capital's answer to the plazas around European cities. It's considered one of the world's largest public squares .
Jakartans flock to the grand expanse on leisurely weekend days with their friends and families, making Merdeka Square the place to go for a slice of everyday life in this bustling urban area.
Merdeka Square's defining feature is the National Monument . Also known as Monas , the 132-meter-tall tower topped with a gold foil flame symbolizes Indonesia's struggle for independence. The architectural marvel took 14 years to construct and was opened by Suharto, Indonesia's second president, in 1975.
The base of the monument houses the National History Museum , a small attraction with dioramas that depict the history of the Indonesian independence movement. Tourists can also take a lift to the top of Monas every hour – if they can get their hands on one of the limited tickets before they sell out.
Merdeka Square offers the perfect atmosphere for relaxing on a weekend afternoon. Watch pick-up games of soccer, spread out a picnic on one of the grassy lawns, and visit the adorable spotted deer in an enclosed area near the southeastern corner, and see if you don't leave feeling restored.
Adress: Gambir, Central Jakarta City, Jakarta
You're never more than a stone's throw away from a mega shopping mall in Jakarta. The city has more than 170 shopping malls spread throughout its neighborhoods. Many of them feature impressive architecture with multiple floors of shops, theaters, restaurants, grocery stores, salons, galleries, and other things to do, making them the ideal place to spend time while you avoid the stifling rush hour traffic in the capital.
Which malls are the best places to visit in Jakarta? The answer depends on what you're looking for. Plaza Indonesia in Central Jakarta brims with international luxury brands, like Bulgari, Rolex, Kate Spade, and Christian Louboutin, as well as locally-made batik textiles. Grand Indonesia Shopping Town , a mall in view of the Selamat Datang Monument , features the largest movie theater in Indonesia, a fountain show, and a video game arcade.
In West Jakarta , shoppers can head to Mal Taman Anggrek (also known as MTA) for more than 500 stores, concerts in the central atrium, one of the country's largest indoor ice-skating rinks, and a massive LED display that stretches around the entire building.
Foodies should make a point to have a meal (or two) at the robust food hall inside of Plaza Senayan in Central Jakarta.
Indonesia made international headlines when the country cut the ribbon on its first contemporary art institution, Museum MACAN, in November 2017. The critically acclaimed attraction has since built a reputation as one of the top places to visit in Jakarta.
The 7,100-square-meter space showcases an important 800-piece collection built over 25 years, primarily by art aficionado and businessman Haryanto Adikoesoemo. Inside the cultural icon, tourists can see whimsical fiberglass creations from Yayoi Kusama, Romantic paintings from beloved Indonesian artist Raden Saleh Sjarif Boestaman, and a unique watercolor map of Bali by Mexican painter Miguel Covarrubias.
Check the museum's website for the most up-to-date list of exhibitions and events during your visit to Jakarta.
Address: AKR Tower Level M, Jalan Panjang No. 5 Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta Barat 11530

Need a break from Jakarta's concrete jungle? Take a day trip to the Thousand Islands, a cluster of 110 exquisite islands scattered in the Java Sea, just north of the city. Ferries and private shuttles whisk tourists to hot spots within this island chain from Marina Ancol every day.
You can reach one of the closest Thousand Islands, Pulau Bidadari , in just 30 minutes from the ferry port. Highlights of the destination include rare trees, sandy beaches , and a 17th-century fort . You can also spend the night in an overwater bungalow .
Picturesque Pulau Tidung is another favorite spot for a day trip. Tourists spend their time on this island bicycling , snorkeling , and snapping photos along the legendary "Love Bridge," which connects the main island with a smaller piece of land.
You'll feel worlds away from the big city the moment you step foot on Pulau Sepa . Located about 90 minutes away from Jakarta, the island is an adventure lover's paradise. Choose from water sports, like banana boat rides , snorkeling , jet skiing , and diving . If you miss the ferry back to the city, you can sleep in a cottage or camp out under the stars.
Indonesia's capital may look shiny and modern, but it still retains relics of its charming historical atmosphere in Kota , Jakarta's Old Town. The area served as the Dutch East India Company's headquarters in the 17th century. It's one of the best places to visit on your first day in Jakarta to get a sense of this city's storied past.
Taman Fatahillah is the center of sightseeing in Kota. Dutch colonial buildings surround the cobblestone plaza, creating a stately atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to the glass-and-concrete skyscrapers found elsewhere in Jakarta.
The nearly 400-year-old whitewashed building on the southern edge of the square has been transformed from a town hall to the Jakarta History Museum . Inside, you'll find more than 20,000 historical objects, including antique maps, ceramics, and Betawi-style furniture, along with prison cells that held Indonesian freedom fighters in the 19th century.
Another worthwhile attraction to explore in Kota is Museum Wayang on the western edge of Taman Fatahillah. It takes travelers through the Javanese tradition of wooden puppetry. The cultural institution occasionally hosts free puppet shows.
For more art and culture in Kota, check out the Museum Seni Rupa Dan Keramik (Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics) , just across the square from Museum Wayang. It displays a remarkable collection of ceramics and handicrafts from Indonesia, as well as pieces from Europe and other parts of Asia.
Don't spend all your time indoors, though. Lined with intriguing wooden-shuttered buildings, Kota's side streets are a treasure trove of photographic sites and rich atmosphere. Explore the area by foot, or rent a bike from Fatahillah Square. When you're ready to refuel, the famous Cafe Batavia is the best spot to escape the heat and sip on classic punch mocktails.
Address: Jl. Lada Dalam No.7, RT.7/RW.7, Pinangsia, Kec. Taman Sari, Kota Jakarta Barat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 11110
Devote an afternoon of your Jakarta itinerary to exploring Kemang. Widely considered to be Jakarta's trendiest neighborhood, the suburban expat area brims with cafés, shops, and sightseeing opportunities.
There are tons of things to do in Kemang. Sip a strong cup of coffee at Say Something Coffee while watching dogs play at the nearby dog park. Browse shelves of novels in the serene Aksara book store. Check out the latest apparel from up-and-coming Indonesian designers at Kemang's ever-changing roster of boutiques. Catch a flick at the Kinosaurus microcinema.
Get in touch with your creative side by seeing an art exhibit at Kemang Gallery 58 . It's also worth indulging in weekend brunch at Kemang's bustling restaurants – if you can score a table. Call ahead to make reservations.
Hot tip: It's tough to get to Kemang on public transportation. Flag a Blue Bird Taxi or hop on the back of an ojek (informal motorcycle taxi) to reach this area.
When you're visiting a country with the world's largest Muslim population, you'll want to make a point to experience Islamic culture and attractions firsthand, starting with a visit to Istiqlal Mosque. The largest mosque in Southeast Asia (and one of the world's largest mosques), this religious site in Jakarta has the capacity to hold a whopping 120,000 visitors at any given time. The five-level dome structure, much of which is made from marble from East Java, spans an impressive nine-hectare area near Monas.
Conservatively dressed tourists are welcome to visit the mosque outside of prayer times. But if you don't have time to go inside, simply stand nearby and listen to the call to prayer delivered from the structure's soaring minaret throughout the day.
Address: Jl. Taman Wijaya Kusuma, Ps. Baru, Kecamatan Sawah Besar, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10710
Looking for a way to beat Jakarta's heat and humidity? Head north to the city's popular beach resort of Ancol. The expansive recreation area features a marina, sandy shore, and swimming pools where you can rent a sun lounger and cool off for the day. There's also a lovely promenade and boardwalk, which make great spots to watch the sunset.
Besides the beach, this area is also home to another popular attraction: Ancol Dreamland. The waterfront attraction offers fun for the whole family, including a massive oceanarium, a water park with a maze of twisting slides, a world-class golf course, botanical gardens, a zoo, and a theme park with more than 40 rides. If you're traveling to Jakarta with kids, you'll definitely want to include a day or two in Ancol on your itinerary.
In the shadows of Istiqlal Mosque stands another one of the city's prominent religious sites: St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral. Better known as the Jakarta Cathedral, the neo-gothic church traces its history back to the mid-19th century. Its proximity to the large mosque is considered a symbol of Indonesia's philosophy of unity and harmony among different faiths.
From a distance, the cathedral appears to be constructed of stone, like European churches. But get up close, and you'll notice that it's actually made of thick bricks coated in plaster that's designed to look like natural stone. Step inside, and you'll see three historic altars, enough pews to accommodate 8,000 worshippers, and a statue of Mary holding Jesus Christ after his crucifixion.
Just next door to the church is the Museum Katedral , a small museum that explains how Catholicism reached Indonesia. It holds the record of Indonesia's first known baptism, which took place in 1808.
Address: Jl. Katedral No.7B, Ps. Baru, Kecamatan Sawah Besar, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10710
Learn about the original inhabitants of the greater Jakarta area at Setu Babakan, an interactive attraction that aims to preserve and celebrate Indigenous Betawi culture. Start at the two-story Betawi Museum, then make your way outside to see Betawi homes and catch a cultural arts performance at the amphitheater.
When you're feeling hungry, swing by Zone E of the attraction to sample traditional Betawi cuisine (like fried bean sprouts and glutinous rice omelets) from the vendors. The multisensory experience will leave you with a deep appreciation for this ancient culture.
Hot tip: Every July, Setu Babakan hosts its annual Betawi Culture Festival, which gives tourists the chance to see a wedding, traditional ceremonies, and special rituals.
Address: Jl. RM. Kahfi II, RT.13/RW.8, Srengseng Sawah, Jagakarsa, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta

The gargantuan capital of a huge nation, for many Indonesians Jakarta is a city of promise. The lure of jobs and a better life has caused the city’s population to escalate to over 10 million. Though individual tourist attractions are scattered thinly, the city has a rich cultural life, with an abundance of performing and visual arts. And its greatest saving grace remains the easy-going, welcoming atmosphere and ready humour that endures at street level, despite the surrounding mayhem.

Jakarta sprawls across a vast area. South of the harbour on Jakarta Bay and Ancol recreation park is Kota, the old Batavia area, where remnants of Dutch colonial rule reside. Heading south are Pecinan (Chinatown) and busy Glodok, the electronic, gadget and computer centre of the city.
A major north–south artery, Jalan Hayam Wuruk, merges into Jalan Gajah Mada, lined with shops, restaurants, hotels and nightlife, ending at the huge expanse of Lapangan Merdeka (Freedom Square), the heart of Central Jakarta.
The busy Jalan Thamrin-Sudirman corridor, south of Lapangan Merdeka is one of two major Central Business Districts (CBDs), a wall of glimmering glass and steel with some of the most interesting high-rise architecture in Southeast Asia. This thoroughfare in turn connects with Jalan Rasuna Said and Gatot Subroto, the second CBD and a golden triangle for international companies, banks, hotels, shopping malls and embassies.
Surrounding the city mayhem on all sides are residential areas, ranging from upper- and middle-class streets to the most basic shanties. Scattered throughout are pockets that seem frozen in time, including diminutive residential districts with market gardens and makeshift kampung (village) dwellings that impart something of a village atmosphere to many back alleys.
Jakarta is a huge city but it can also be a thoroughly rewarding place to visit © Dhevanraj Segar/Shutterstock
The best things to do in huge sprawling Jakarta are well hidden, but city dwellers are proud of the cultural and intellectual life in their ever-changing, chaotic capital city.
#1 Taman Fatahillah (Fatahillah Square)
Kota is the heart of the old 17th-century Dutch settlement at Batavia, originally a walled town modelled on Amsterdam. Most of Old Batavia was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century, but the town square area survived and has been restored and renamed Taman Fatahillah (Fatahillah Square). Adjacent colonial buildings have been converted into museums, and the whole neighbourhood has been considerably gentrified in recent years.
The main square bustles at weekends with street entertainers, old-fashioned bicycle rentals, artists and food vendors. The best thing to do here is to visit the museums that line the square: Museum Sejarah Jakarta (Jakarta History Museum), which houses memorabilia from the colonial period; the Museum Wayang (Puppet Museum), home to many puppets and masks including rare buffalo hide shadow puppets; and the Museum Seni Rupa (Fine Arts Museum), which features paintings and sculptures by modern Indonesian artists.
Any visit to Central Jakarta should begins at the top of the Monas (National Monument). A 137-metre-tall marble obelisk is set in the centre of Lapangan Merdeka (Freedom Square). There is an observation deck at the top surmounted by a 14-metre bronze flame sheathed in 33kg of gold symbolising the spirit of freedom. It was commissioned by Sukarno and completed in 1961 – a combination Olympic Flame-Washington Monument with the phallic overtones of an ancient Hindu-Javanese lingga . The museum in the basement contains 12 dioramas depicting historical scenes from a nationalistic viewpoint. A high-speed elevator rises to the observation deck, where on a clear day there is a fabulous 360-degree view of Jakarta.

#3 National Museum
On the west side of Medan Merdeka (Freedom Field) lies one of Indonesia’s great cultural treasures, the National Museum. Founded in 1868 by the Batavian Society for Arts and Sciences, the museum now holds a huge array of antiquities and ethnographic artefacts. The courtyard of the original building is crammed with an impressive mass of Hindu-Buddhist statuary, while the new wing houses well-displayed collections spread over several floors. Highlights include the ceramics section, and the glittering golden regalia of various Indonesian royal houses. Be sure not to miss the excellent, though poorly signposted, fourth floor, accessible by elevator.
#4 Taman Ismail Marzuk
The very impressive Taman Ismail Marzuki is a cultural centre that presents a programme of drama, dance and music from around Indonesia and the rest of the world. It also has a planetarium. It's worth wandering over to nearby Jalan Surabaya, the city’s so-called ‘antique street’. Dozens of shops here sell everything from wayang (puppets) to ship fittings – but little of it is authentic.
#5 Masjid Istiqlal (Istiqlal Mosque)
The imposing white-marble Masjid Istiqlal (Istiqlal Mosque) on Jalan Veteran is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. Opened in 1978 and designed by a Catholic architect from Sumatra, it stands at the former site of the Dutch Benteng (Fort) Noordwijk. The mosque is open to appropriately dressed non-Muslims for tours outside of prayer times.

#6 Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park)
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah covers nearly 100 hectares (250 acres) of land near Kampung Rambutan. While not entirely successful in compressing the entire archipelago into a single attraction, the park nonetheless permits you a glimpse of the many thousands of Indonesian islands you will probably not end up visiting. The various pavilions are each constructed in the traditional architectural style of a different Indonesian province. Housed inside each pavilion are interesting displays of handicrafts, traditional costumes, musical instruments and other artefacts for which each region is known.
#7 Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands)
One of the best ways to unwind and recapture a taste of the tropics after the bustle of the city is to escape to clear blue waters and whites and beaches at any one of the 600 small islands off the north coast of Jakarta, known as Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands), one of Java’s national parks. Day trips can be taken to Bidadari, Kelor and Kahyangan islands near the coast. On Onrust island, explore the ruins of an old Dutch fort, which has remains of an 18th-century shipyard. Bokor and Rambut islands are home to bird sanctuaries; you need a permit from the national park office, PHKA, in Jakarta. Ferries depart every day from Ancol Marina to various islands between 8am–9am and return between 1.30pm–2pm.

Sprawling out across three provinces, the are plenty of areas to stay in Jakarta but for travellers there are five main districts that are the most useful.
This upscale south-central district is home to some of Jakarta's most luxurious hotels, restaurants and swish cocktail bars. Its tree-lined streets also has art galleries and a number of cultural landmarks.
Popular with expats and young professionals, this trendy neighbourhood has vibrant a nightlife scene and numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants. It also has a bohemian vibe, with street art and independent boutiques.
Central Business District
As the financial and commercial hub of Jakarta, the CBD is ideal location for business travelers and those who want to be close to the city's shopping and entertainment districts. It's littered with business hotels.
Kebayoran Baru
This affluent neighbourhood has high-end boutiques and exclusive communities. Its hotels reflect that.
Part of Ancol Bay City, a coastal waterfront resort, this waterside space is a popular choice for families with an amusement park, beach, and marina.
Browse places to stay in Jakarta .
For years, eating and drinking in Jakarta has been defined by its incredible street food scene. Vendors, carts and night markets filled the bellies of busy locals with fresh soto betawi (beef stew), grilled chicken satay and nasi goreng (vegetables and rice, topped with a fried egg), plus other on-the-go snacks.
But now, aside from amazing street food, the city's restaurant scene is flourishing too. You can now get a variety of cuisines from Japanese to Italian at world-class standards. What's more, a growing number of ritzy speakeasies and high-rise cocktail bars have added a new dimension to Jakarta's nightlife, too.
- Jalan Sabang Something of a street food mecca, Jalan Sabang is a great place to try a range of Indonesian cooking. From mountains of rice to gado-gado (an Indonesian salad of mixed vegetables, tofu, tempeh, and peanut sauce), all via the mouth-watering lamb satays from Sate Jaya Agung, you won't go hungry.
- OKU This relaxed Kempinski Hotel restaurant brings traditional Japanese dishes into the 21st century, all served in a calming, Zen-like space.
- Koda Japanese mixologist Yukata Nakashima is the brains behind this elegant cocktail speakeasy on the second floor of Sudirman 7.8 building.
A tuk-tuk can be a cheap way of getting around Jakarta © Nano Tanongsakmontri/Shutterstock
The traffic in Jakarta is so bad that some office workers are paid to start in the back of the taxi they’re riding to work. There isn't really a good way to navigate this massive city without getting stuck at some point.
Buses crisscross the entire city but the most useful service is the Transjakarta Busway as it uses dedicated bus-only lanes. However, it does also suffer from regular traffic jams.
Ubiquitous and ingenious at slipping through small gaps to queue jump, tuk-tuks can be speedier than other ways of getting around. Agree on a price before setting off.
Roughly the same price as a tuk-tuk, but with air-con, metered taxis can be a good option for longer journeys. Urban Indonesia has been transformed by the emergence of the ride-hailing apps go-Jek and grab. Go-Jek was originally just a means of hailing ojek (motorbike taxis) in Jakarta, but it soon expanded to provide private minicabs and registered taxis. Fares are fixed in advance via an app.
It is possible to hire a car with a driver for very little and it's much better than tackling the roads yourself. Still, expect to hit traffic at some point.
Opened in 2019, Jakarta MRT trains run north (Kampung Bandan) to south (Lebak Bulus). They are clean, quick and efficient – but only really good for commuters.
Most travellers who visit Jakarta tend to use the Indonesian capital as a springboard to other destinations around the country. It's worth sticking around for at least a couple of days, if not more. You need four days to see the best of Jakarta.
Kota and the museums around Taman Fatahillah (Fatahillah Square) are a great introduction to the city and will take a least a day, but you'll also want to also spend time in the alleys or Glodok and Chinatown. A day's shopping in the city's bigger malls and along the city’s ‘antique street’, Jalan Surabaya, should also be on the cards.
You could easily while away a day at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park) on day three. Day four, spend the morning at one of the nearby islands, before heading to Jalan Sabang to chow down on some amazing street food

The best time to visit Jakarta is from May to September when the weather is dry and pleasant. Temperatures during this time average between 24°C and 32°C. June to August is the city's high season, when domestic tourists visit the city for their holidays. Prices for flights, hotels, and attractions tend to be higher. Peak tourist season in Jakarta coincides with the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha celebrations in the Islamic calendar. Expect crowded streets, busy markets, and long queues at popular attractions.
The wet season in Jakarta lasts from October to April, with heavy rainfall and occasional flooding that may disrupt travel plans. Air pollution from traffic congestion is a persistent issue in Jakarta. It's worst in September, during the peak of the dry season in September.

Indonesia has a vast domestic flight network, of which Jakarta is the main hub. The increase of cheap flights has reduced the number of ferries servicing the city. However, there are still plenty of those too. Trains and buses come from all across the island and both are cheap.
The vast majority of long-haul international flights arrive either at the huge and recently upgraded Sukarno-hatta international airport (also spelled Soekarno- Hatta), 20km (13 miles) west of Jakarta on Java.
PELNI (Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia), the state-owned shipping company, serves Jakarta from scores of ports across Indonesia. In bad weather, especially during the rainy season (Oct–Apr), the seas can be quite rough, particularly between Sumatra and Java. All ferry runs may be cancelled. Enquire at the local ticketing office, 1.5km northwest of the Monumen Nasional in central Jakarta.
Java’s main highways are well maintained, and there are increasing numbers of fast intercity toll roads. Off the main routes expect a few potholes. Intercity buses in Java are generally comfortable modern coaches with air-conditioning, and increasingly often with Wi-Fi. Smaller, less comfortable buses provide links to smaller towns and rural areas. Jakarta has three main terminals: Kalideres Terminal (west Jakarta) operates services to Sumatra and West Java; Kampung Rambutan Terminal (in northeast Jakarta, near the old Halim Airport) is the hub for services to Bandung, Bogor and southwards; while Pulo Gadung Terminal (Jl. Bekasi Timur Raya) has services heading to Central and East Java.
There is a reasonable railway network in Java, including four main train stations in Jakarta. Train travel here is cheap and connections include Bandung, Malang, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya and Yogyakarta.

Ten New Heritage Hotspots in Kota Tua, Jakarta's old town
There has never been a more exciting time to explore Jakarta’s old town. For so many years, Kota Tua’s grand colonial buildings were left to rot, but thanks to the work of these passionate locals, edgy art galleries and cool cafés are now popping up on empty floors of old post offices, in the attics of monumental merchant mansions and in abandoned spice warehouses. Kota Tua is no longer a distant memory of a long-gone past, but a new exciting chapter in Jakarta’s history. The cobblestoned streets of Jakarta’s old town have become a location of choice for the city’s creative entrepreneurs. One by one the crumbling properties around Fatahillah Square and the Kali Besar canal are being renovated. App and map in hand, we rented two vintage bikes and matching sunhats at the square and pedalled away from the tourist crowds. We checked out ten new places in the old town and liked what we found.
1. MULA Kota Tua & Kafe Sunyi
The beginning
MULA literally means 'the beginning'. It is a coworking space and creative hub in the heart of Old Town. MULA provides anything a start-up needs: from a simple desk to a podcast studio. More than just a physical space, MULA is all about connecting communities. The main goal is to support an ecosystem of small industries and start-ups in the Old Town surrounding. MULA welcomes its neighbours for dance classes, language courses and coaching clinics. Supported by Bank Indonesia, part of the top floor has even been repurposed into a communal prayer room for local residents.
More than just a physical space, MULA is all about connecting communities.
Silent coffee
On the 2nd floor is Kafe Sunyi, which means Silent Café. A coffee shop run by our diffable friends. Sign language comes in handy when you order your cappuccino. Don’t worry, the friendly baristas here will happily teach you.
Gedung Rotterdamsche Lloyd is more than a century old. Purpose-built for the Dutch shipping company the building features period architectural details such as the huge stained glass windows and the dark green tile tableau that give the place a unique style and character.

2. Gedung Cipta Niaga
Prominent trading house
Built as the headquarters of the powerful colonial trading company Internationale Crediet en Handels Vereeniging Rotterdam office, who hired the most prominent architecture firm they could find: Ed Cuypers en Hulswit, designers of colonial Java’s prestigious properties. Nice to know: Ed Cuypers was the younger cousin of Pierre Cuypers, the architect of the famous Dutch Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
This was prime property in the colonial days, occupying the whole block so it would face the river and the square.
Art Deco Gem
After Indonesian independence, the building got snapped up by Cipta Niaga, one of Indonesia’s main trading houses. With its high ceilings, tiled floors, stained glass windows and majestic art deco staircases, it’s a popular venue for exhibitions, film shoots and even yoga classes. It is now under the management of Konsorsium Kota Tua Jakarta, follow them on IG @kotatuajakarta.id to catch new events!

3. Kali Besar
Little Amsterdam
Kali Besar literally means the big canal, a piece of superb water engineering by the Dutch. When they built Batavia city, they dredged the small Ciliwung stream and turned it into a navigable waterway, so the many sampans could offload goods from the tall ships in the Sunda Kelapa harbour.
Kali Besar was wealthy and cosmopolitan with merchant mansions and canal houses, reminiscent of the Dutch capital Amsterdam.
River Revival
In the 19th century, the harbour was relocated, and Jakarta’s wealthy businessmen moved to the newly planned Weltevreden a leafy suburb with wide boulevards and white-plastered art deco villas. The canal was still a place of trade, but no one lived there anymore. With the Kota Tua revival movement also the Kali Besar river has been cleaned up. The work of architect Budi Lim who in 2002 received a UNESCO award for the revitalisation of the National Archives. He was inspired by the Cheonggyecheon River in Seoul where the riverbanks are now full of life and play. We like the concrete balconies where you can sit and relax after a long day of exploring Kota Tua.

4. Mel’s Dorm
Home for travellers
Hendry Lee dedicated this hostel to his passion for travelling and his wife, Mel. Since 2018, the hostel has been the home for thousands of backpackers from across the globe. A cheap and cheerful place that offers a variety of rooms, a kitchenette and a hidden library.
Kerta Niaga is a compound of 3 buildings from different periods: the 19th century, early 20th century and post-independence. Mel’s Dorm is located in the most recent one, Kerta Niaga #2. A building with a modest design of tropical modernism. The hanging stairs are iconic.
I dedicated this hostel to my passion for travel and my wife, Mel.
Breakfast with a view
Mel’s dining area is the best part. It overlooks the canal. Whether you make your own food or order from the many places around, there’s always a good crowd. It’s the place where backpackers meet.

5. Kedai Seni Djakarté
Heritage café
This traditional colonial building had been abandoned for over a decade. When the Djakarte team saw the original grand marble staircase, they were sold and embarked on a renovation. The shabby chic two-story interior is replete with crooked oil paintings and long wooden tables. Upstairs is more of a loungey atmosphere, decorated with vintage paintings and photographs. They even have a small collection of Indonesian cassette tapes available for sale!
Quirky little café on the southwest corner of the square to watch the captivating crowd of street vendors and portrait artists.
Thirst quencher
Es Toples Djakarte is a good choice: soda mixed with fresh fruit. Choose your favourite colour and flavour: strawberry, kiwi, grape or passion fruit. A perfect thirst quencher on a hot day!

6. Bar Historia
Inspired by the spice trade
The café takes its inspiration from the rich spice trade history that put Jakarta on the map 500 years ago. The menu offers a wide selection of spice-infused smoothies, cocktails and teas, handcrafted by expert mixologists. Manager Putri Karleti explains “We use ingredients like cinnamon, nutmeg and sesame to create exciting flavour combinations”. The lofty interior is sparingly furnished with an attractive mix of modern solid teak tables combined and elegant vintage cabinets but the real highlight is tfloor-to-ceilinging mural created by local artists depicting historic scenes in the Kota.
We use ingredients like cinnamon, nutmeg and sesame to create exciting flavour combinations.
Our favourites
We loved the Jamrud Khatulistiwa, cucumber, pineapple, honey, basil and mint, heavenly goodness in a glass (Rp 38.000). Hungry? Try the Bakpao Ketawa, literally translated as ‘happy bun’, filled with spicy all-time favourite beef rendang and a sprinkle of spring onion. Also the Gemblong Pisang (grilled banana dipped in melting coconut sugar, Rp 27,000) is a real treat. All dishes are prepared and presented with love, care and a hint of history.

8. Acaraki Jamu
More than just a herbal drink
Owner Jony Yuwono has done four years of research seeking the best ingredients from across Indonesia’s archipelago and mastering ancient techniques of jamu making. For centuries, jamu is believed to have healing and immunity benefits. More than that, jamu bears a deep philosophical meaning: it has 8 main recipes that stand for the 8 cycles of life and 8 points on a compass. This is why a traditional Jamu Gendong (jamu-seller lady) always carries 8 bottles on her back… Acaraki experiments with modern brewing pressing and dripping techniques to introduce the jamu legacy to a younger audience. Our favourite picks are Golden Sparkling; a refreshing cold jamu with soda that ingredients that boost blood circulation and healthy skin; and Saranti is also on our list. Beras kencur (kaempferia galangal) with creamer will mprove your appetite.
The word ‘acaraki’ refers to the professional title of jamu makers during Majapahit Kingdom era back in the 13th century.
Postcard from Kota Tua

9. Wonderloft Hostel
Home for wanderers
“So many tourists come to Kota Tua, but there was no hotel” - that is how owner Karen came up with the idea for a boutique hostel in the heart of the old town. When she was shown this run down building opposite Bank Indonesia, she immediately saw the potential of the beautifully arched spaces and large floorplates right in the middle of Kota Tua. A six month renovation stripped the building back to its bare shell, original details intact. Karen’s team created a comfortable lounge area on the ground floor and added four floors of capsule bedrooms and Wonderloft opened early 2017.
So many tourists come to Kota Tua, but there was no hotel.
Feel at home
As a house rule guests take off their shoes and put on comfy slippers for an extra homey feel. Each floor has spacious lounge areas for quiet relaxation and who wants to party can do so downstairs or at the weekly pub-crawl nights.
