2021 Australian Tourism Exchange Opens in Sydney

Media Alert | 8 June 2021

Link Copied!

Tourism Australia’s largest annual travel trade event, the Australian Tourism Exchange 2021 (ATE21), opened in Sydney yesterday, running across two weeks as a hybrid event incorporating both live and online elements for the first time.

This will be the 41 st edition of Australia’s largest tourism tradeshow and it is designed to connect tourism operators together with travel wholesalers and agents from Australia and around the world. This year’s event is particularly significant, as it is the first time the tourism industry has gathered on such scale since pre-COVID.

The live event, ATE Live, will take place from 6 to 9 June at the ICC Sydney, with more than 1,000 buyers and sellers in attendance from both Australia and New Zealand including inbound tour operators, luxe buyers, and specialist buyers. ATE Online will follow from 10 to 17 June and will facilitate connections with over 1,200 Australian sellers and international buyers who are unable to be in Australia in-person.

The demand for ATE has been extraordinary, and more than 57,000 meetings have been created across ATE Live and ATE Online with 99 per cent of buyer diaries being full.

Tourism Australia Managing Director, Phillipa Harrison, said that it was wonderful to look towards the industry’s future, after one of the most challenging years on record for tourism.

“The tourism industry was one of the hardest hit, first by the impacts of the 2019-20 summer bushfires and then the COVID-19 pandemic, and while we know it will take time for the industry to fully recover, maintaining business connections is critical,” Phillipa Harrison said.

“Having the opportunity to bring together so many colleagues from the industry, both from within Australia and overseas, to make, maintain and develop invaluable links between Australian tourism operators and the global distribution network at ATE is more important than ever for ensuring Australia remains top of mind.

“While we look forward to the time when we can once again welcome back travellers from all our key markets around the world to experience our beautiful country, we continue to support our tourism operators, who are the lifeblood of our offering, through events such as ATE,” Phillipa Harrison said.

Tourism Australia is pleased to be facilitating ATE through full subsidisation of three nights’ accommodation for primary seller delegates and primary buyer delegates, as well as full subsidisation of the buyer and seller participation fees, through the $6.5 million in funding support from the National Bushfire Recovery Fund.

There are several other new elements to the 2021 ATE event. ATE Luxe is a new luxury program being trialled for the first time, and will take place across both ATE Live and ATE Online. ATE Luxe is a bespoke opportunity for selected buyers and sellers who deliver high-end experiential product tailored to the luxury market.

The Aviation Program is also a new initiative for 2021, designed as an opportunity for airline and airport stakeholders to participate and meet with each other at ATE Live. Senior airline representatives will be in attendance to participate in the Aviation Panel discussion, live recording of interviews with senior industry representatives will be hosted by CAPA, and there will be exhibition space for airports and a lounge area for networking. There will be 25 airlines will be in attendance, along with 14 Australian airports.

The ATE Live event will operate under COVID-19 safety measures set by the NSW Government.

With this year’s hybrid event format, Australian sellers can meet and network with both Australian-based international and domestic buyers in person, and then virtually with overseas-based international buyers. The impact of COVID-19 on the tourism industry has been devastating, and Tourism Australia’s focus is on supporting Australia’s tourism businesses as much as possible so they can maintain these valuable business connections, rebuild, and return to growth again once international travel resumes.

More information on the event can be found at https://www.tourism.australia.com/ate21

The Stylish Person's Guide to Sydney, According to St. Agni's Lara Fells

One of the best parts of fashion and beauty being such global industries is that you're constantly coming across interesting people from all over the globe — the types you'd love to get recommendations from when you're traveling to a new destination. So, we're asking them about their favorite food, shopping and wellness spots in their cities for you, so you can pencil them into your itinerary. Consider this your fashion and beauty person's guide to travel.

In recent years, there's been an Aussie takeover in fashion , the likes of which we haven't seen since Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's seminal 2000 film "Our Lips Are Sealed." Sydney is right up there with Copenhagen in buzzy fashion weeks holding their weight (and the public's attention) against the big four in New York, London, Milan and Paris, its designers gaining traction internationally and amassing followings for the lifestyle they propose — of easy dressing, of minimalism, of laid-back living.

A recent favorite export is St. Agni , founded by Lara and Matt Fells, which is actually based in Byron Bay in Northern New South Wales, about an hour and a half flight from Sydney. However, work brings Co-Founder and Designer Lara to the city, which is Australia's fashion hub, quite often. (St. Agni has shown as part of Australian Fashion Week, and the brand  recently opened a store in the Paddington neighborhood.)

"Sydney attracts models, photographers and creatives from all over Australia and beyond," she says. "It's where many of our models are based and, consequently, where a lot of our photoshoots take place."

To Fells, where Sydney really shines is "in its unique offering of all the benefits of a city — shopping, restaurants, culture — along with the luxury of having the scenic coastline at its doorstep," she says. "I usually visit Sydney for work related purposes, but my favorite part is being amongst the hustle and bustle of the city. Coming from Byron Bay, which is much slower paced, it's a nice, refreshing contrast."

Should you be planning a trip down under, read on for Fells' quick-fire Sydney favorites for eating, relaxing, swimming and more.

Favorite place (or places) to get breakfast in Sydney?

It depends where I stay when I visit. If I'm staying at the Paramount Hotel, they have a great Café, the Paramount Coffee Project . Another favorite in Surry Hills is Bills .

Favorite place (or places) to get lunch?

I'm often on the go during this time, however, if I have time, I love to have a slow late lunch at Sean's Panorama in Bondi.

Favorite place (or places) to get coffee?

There's too many! Sydney has coffee sorted.

Favorite place (or places) to get dinner?

I love Greek cuisine —  Apollo has a great ambience and delicious Greek. You can find great Italian at Il Baretto .

What's one tourist attraction you think is well worth the visit in Sydney?

The St. Agni Boutique in Paddington , of course! You need to see the Opera House and Bridge by the harbor to have complete the Sydney experience.

If you only had time to visit one museum or gallery while in Sydney, where would you go?

The Art Gallery of NSW has a great collection of Australian and international art. It's also home to the Brett Whiteley Studio .

What's your top wellness experience in Sydney?

There's nothing quite like a great facial or massage at The Calmm .

Best beach or pool in/around Sydney?

There are many! Of course Bondi Beach, which is often quite busy. There are also a lot of beautiful coves near the city, such as Gordons Bay. If you have time, visiting the Northern beaches is a must.

Qantas suspends Sydney to Shanghai flights

Despite trade tensions almost fully thawed with China, Qantas has been forced to make a major change to its international flights.

Brutal new blow for hundreds of staff

Brutal new blow for hundreds of staff

Qantas has been forced to can its Sydney to Shanghai route because of low demand.

In place of the airline’s scuppered only direct route into China, the airline will fly Brisbane to Manila for the first time in 10 years, and fire up more flights to Singapore and India.

Qantas International chief executive Cam Wallace said planes to and from China had been half full.

“Since Covid, the demand for travel between Australia and China has not recovered as strongly as expected,” he said.

“In some months, our flights to and from Shanghai have been operating around half full.”

Sydney to Shanghai will be suspended from July 28.

Qantas will still fly to Hong Kong and look to fly Sydney to Shanghai again in the future.

In its place Qantas’ Brisbane to Singapore route will increase from seven to nine return flights each week from October. The airline says timings will be aligned to cut four hours from its daily Singapore to London flight.

Sydney to Singapore will increase from 14 to 17 return flights a week and Sydney to Bengaluru increases from five a week to seven; both subject to government and regulator approval.

The change will come in from July 28. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Ben Clark

The Indian route will run from mid-December to March, offering more than 12,000 seats.

Customers with booking to Shanghai after July 27 will contacted and offered a full refund, Qantas says.

Across all airlines, passenger numbers on flights between Australia and China have been 30 per cent lower during the past six months compared with the same period before the pandemic. That 30 per cent dip is despite capacity being about 20 per cent lower.

Capacity for the market is forecast to grow further, reaching pre-pandemic levels by the end of this year.

Federal Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell met Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao by video conference just last month, pertaining to trade between the countries.

Qantas is resuming Brisbane to Manila flights after 10 years. Picture: iStock

China imposed sweeping tariffs on Australian goods in 2020 after the Australian government called for an inquiry into the origins of Covid-19.

Australian coal, cotton, copper ores and concentrates, timber logs, oaten hay, barley and wine suddenly no longer had buyers in China. Those products are being shipped to China again now, except lobster and red meat are still sanctioned by Beijing.

After the April meeting, Mr Farrell said student and tourist numbers and official and business delegations between the nationals were increasing.

A man has surprised his partner and passengers on board by taking over the PA system on their flight to Bali.

Aussie travellers could score free flights with Qantas as the airline launches an incredible rewards program promotion.

Employees at an Aussie company have copped another huge blow just weeks after they were stood down.

“The new Global Entry mobile application leverages the latest technologies, in order to enhance security while further improving the travel experience for CBP’s trusted travelers,” said CBP’s Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy A. Miller.

With the new app, travelers simply take a photo as a “selfie,” which will be compared to a photo gallery to verify their identity through facial biometrics. After the photo has been submitted, the traveler will receive a receipt on the app. Once the traveler arrives to the primary inspection area, they can bypass the Global Entry portals and go directly to the CBP officers to efficiently process their entry into the United States by showing their mobile receipt.

The Global Entry Mobile Application will initially be available for use by travelers arriving at seven airports: Seattle Tacoma International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Miami International Airport, Orlando International Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, Pittsburgh International Airport, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport. CBP will continue to evaluate and expand the use of the app at airports where Global Entry processing occurs in the future.

The app is free and will be available for download from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store beginning on Sept. 19, 2023.

Global Entry is one of the Department of Homeland Security’s Trusted Traveler Programs , and is used at land, air and sea ports of entry into the United States at all major airports and all Preclearance airports. All applicants undergo rigorous and recurring background checks and an in-person interview before initial enrollment. To maintain Global Entry members as low-risk travelers, any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges. More information on Global Entry and CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs is available on the Global Entry page.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is America's frontline: the nation's largest law enforcement organization and the world's first unified border management agency. The 65,000+ men and women of CBP protect America on the ground, in the air, and on the seas. We facilitate safe, lawful travel and trade and ensure our country's economic prosperity. ITA Announces New Strategic Partnership with Travel Unity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, May 17, 2024 Contact: Office of Public Affairs Email: [email protected] Phone: 202-482-3809

WASHINGTON - Aiming to extend the benefits of travel and tourism to underserved communities across the United States, the International Trade Administration (ITA) today announced a new Strategic Partnership with Travel Unity , a non-profit focused on increasing diversity in the travel and tourism sector through individual and community empowerment.

Through the new ITA Strategic Partnership, the two entities will engage in collaborative efforts to share Travel Unity’s applied diversity, equity, and inclusion standards for small- and medium-sized tourism businesses in underserved communities across the country. Through the partnership, ITA and Travel Unity will support events, webinars, outreach, and training for these businesses as part of a shared mission to ensure diverse, inclusive, and accessible tourism experiences.

Furthermore, ITA will help share Travel Unity’s DEI Standards for Travel and Tourism, making the information accessible to more businesses and organizations as they develop plans and strategies to be more inclusive in their travel and tourism activities.

“As we approach National Travel and Tourism Week, this partnership provides an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the U.S. travel and tourism industry and advances the Biden-Harris Administration’s National Travel and Tourism Strategy to help support a diverse array of tourism products and services,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Travel and Tourism Alex Lasry. “ITA and Travel Unity are excited to collaborate on approaches to build up and empower small- and medium-sized businesses in historically underserved communities that cater to travelers and tourists in the United States.”

“Travel Unity is honored to partner with the International Trade Administration to amplify our respective and collective work,” said Travel Unity Executive Director Roni Weiss. “Together with ITA, we will provide the industry with tools for applied DEI to not only create more fulfilling experiences for a wider array of travelers, but also to diversify the workforce in the travel industry and create deeper bonds between the travel industry and local communities.”

About the International Trade Administration The International Trade Administration (ITA) at the U.S. Department of Commerce is the premier government resource for American companies competing in the global marketplace. Operating in more than 100 U.S. locations and 80 markets worldwide, ITA promotes trade and investment, assists U.S. businesses and workers to export and expand globally, and ensures fair trade and compliance by enforcing U.S. trade laws and agreements.
