Items that serve multiple purposes are great for travel. Any one thing that saves you from packing two things means more room in your bag. You’ll have less weight to carry around, and fewer things to worry about losing. Plus, you might even be able to pack a smaller backpack or suitcase.

This is especially true for clothing since that’s generally what makes up the bulk of your packing list . Convertible travel clothing can be worn in several different ways, which means you can pack one piece instead of two or three… or twenty!

Below are some of the best convertible travel clothing items for women we’ve been able to find- some of which we’ve had the pleasure of reviewing (others we are still working on acquiring).

Is Convertible Travel Clothing WORTH IT?

You be the judge. Watch this video to see how one convertible clothing item can instantly multiply your outfit options.

Convertible Travel Clothing – Wraps, Tops & Dresses

Sometimes advertised as cardigans, dresses, or tops, these clothing items are so much more than that – they’re essentially magical items that can be worn in many different ways : dresses, skirts, shirts, cardigans, and scarves.

That way you can pack one piece of clothing that you can wear for many different occasions from casual to formal.

Although they come with somewhat high price tags, when you consider how many different outfits you’re getting from just one item, I think you’ll agree that it’s well worth a few extra bucks .

1. The Encircled Chrysalis Cardi

convertible travel clothing for women

The Chrysalis Cardi by Encircled is essentially a circle scarf, but some strategically placed snaps transform the item into a cardigan, a dress, a skirt, a wrap, and more. The different styles allow you to wear the Cardi in both casual and dressy situations. There are so many uses for this one item.

Caroline has worn hers to weddings , on airplanes, and everything in between. She’s even come up with a few of her own styles.

chrysalis cardi petite

The Chrysalis Cardi comes in various sizes, including petite and the new maxi (plus-size) version. I own the petite version , and I’m glad that I decided to go this route because it hits me at my knees while the normal size would be super long and make my short legs look even shorter (FYI I’m about 5’3″).

Personally, I often wear it as a scarf because, besides looking good, it is easily transformed into a smart-looking cardi or wrap should the chill pick up . I loved traveling with it because I never had to worry about not having something smart to wear for nicer events.

The fabric (they are predominantly made of modal) drapes beautifully, but it’s not the fastest drying or the lightest . This item is best used for travel when it will be worn often, not packed on travel days, and not when spending lots of time in the great outdoors.

2. The Evolve Top

The Evolve Top

Another great item from Encircled, the Evolve Top can be worn in multiple ways to take you from one situation to the next.

By using hidden snaps it can be worn as a tank top on warm days. For a little more coverage, the sleeves come down to a few different lengths. The top is also reversible so you can have a draping neckline in either the front or the back depending on which way you wear it.

I have this top and have worn it quite regularly to both casual and dressy events. Worn with the drape in the back, some great slacks, and heels, it’s something worthy of a cocktail event. Paired with leggings, it’s ready for yoga.

My one regret is not getting it in a different color as black is not something I enjoy wearing every day. Also, made of the modal that Encircled loves, it takes a bit longer to dry than I would prefer for travel clothing.

Encircled also created the Revolve Dress which is worth checking out since it offers a dress, tunic, or top in one garment.

3. Helene Clarkson Nadi Wrap

Helene Clarkson Nadi Wrap

The Nadi Wrap is a rectangular piece of fabric with rows of buttons along the sides. It can be worn as a scarf, poncho, skirt, top, and more. The material is great for travel because it resists wrinkles and dries fast .

It is a simple garment but can look quite dressy and takes up very little space to pack. Helene Clarkson also makes a variety of other high-quality, versatile items for the urban traveler, including many that are reversible.

  • Read how to use these first 3 items plus a pair of Helene Clarkson reversible pants to make 8 unique travel outfits .

4. Elesk Apparel Evolution Cardigan

Elesk Apparel Evolution Cardigan

The Elesk Apparel Evolution Cardigan is a modern twist on a wardrobe staple. Why bring a regular cardigan with you on your travels that only serves one purpose, when you can bring the Evolution Cardigan which can be worn in over 30 ways? This includes multiple scarves, shirts, and cover-ups with the help of two discreet snaps! This would also make a great layering piece to add some variety to your outfits without packing more clothes.

This cardigan is made from a bamboo rayon spandex blend . While this material is not the most quick-drying, it is antibacterial, breathable, and moisture-wicking which means you hopefully won’t need to wash it often (or at all) during your trip.

5. Birch & Grace Short Top

Birch & Grace short top

Coming in at a lower price point, the Birch & Grace Short Top can be worn in at least 18 ways including as a jacket, shrug, cape, vest, and multiple tops. This design is a bit on the simpler side compared to an item like the Chrysalis Cardi, but we like that it seamlessly transforms between styles without any drama .

Keep in mind that it is lightweight, so it won’t provide much warmth. Each one is handmade by women in Indonesia following the principles of Fair Trade. One size fits XS to 3XL.

6. Infinity Wrap Dress

Convertible travel clothing - infinity wrap dress and skirt.

You can’t go wrong with an infinity wrap skirt or dress ! This item of convertible travel clothing will be a travel staple for years to come because it is just so easy to travel with and style. In fact, it was one of the very first articles I ever put on Her Packing List. This versatile piece can be worn as a dress, a skirt, or a top in so many different ways! Your imagination really is the limit with this one!

You can often buy these along your travels and they come in many different colors and patterns to suit any style.

7. Diane Kroe Origami Travel Dress

Diane Kroe Origami Travel Dress

An asymmetrically cut dress with batwing sleeves and a hidden snap detail that can be styled into various dresses, skirts, and tops. Yes, please! There are multiple colors and fabrics to choose from, including a travel jersey that is environmentally friendly, fast-drying, and breathable.

If this style doesn’t work for you, Diane Kroe has many other versatile and travel-ready tops, pants, and dresses to choose from. All of their products are available in sizes up to 20.

8. Maxi Dress / Skirt

Styling a maxi dress.

If you’re not looking for anything fancy, your standard run-of-the-mill maxi dress or skirt will be a nice multipurpose addition to your travel wardrobe. Shoot for one with a stretchy top so that it will work around the waist and all areas of the torso.

9. Aday That’s a Wrap Top

Convertible travel clothing - Aday That's a Wrap Top

The Aday That’s a Wrap Top is five shirts in one thanks to secret snaps that can be tied, draped, and snapped in multiple ways.

The Technical Silk fabric is high-stretch, drapes like silk, and is soft to the touch. Plus, it’s quick-drying, breathable, wrinkle-free and UPF 50+.

Convertible Travel Pants

1. zip-off pants.

Kuhl Horizn Convertible pants for women travelers

Well-known throughout the travel world, those pants that zip off into shorts aren’t always the most attractive article of clothing you’ll come across. But if you find the right pair, ones that fit you like normal pants, they can be a helpful addition to your travel wardrobe especially when adventuring outdoors and to more rugged destinations.

By packing these pants, you’ll have one piece of clothing that can serve as both pants and shorts. Some convertible travel pants have zips or buttons that let you turn the pants into capris, so you’d have three different uses for these pants depending on the weather.

Others only change into capris, but the usefulness is still there. The trick is to make sure the pants are comfortable on you. If they have an awkward fit, you may not end up wearing them at all, and they’ll end up taking up precious space in your bag. Our best advice would be to try before you buy and then to wear them around before you leave. If you can do that, then the pants will make sense packing.

  • Check out some of our favorite travel pants for women and travel pants with pockets .

2. Diane Kroe Pocket Pants

Convertible travel clothing - Diane Kroe Pocket Pants

The Diane Kroe Pocket Pants transform from wide-leg pants to dressy joggers all with the help of a hidden snap. The deep pockets and comfy high waistband are just the start of the reasons you will love these convertible travel pants.

They are a great addition to your travel wardrobe for multiple weather conditions and easily transform from casual to dressy, making them super versatile . The polyester spandex fabric blend is easy to care for, doesn’t wrinkle, and drapes beautifully.

Reversible Travel Clothing

Reversible clothing is a new addition to Her Packing List after discovering the Splice Clothing brand and all their amazing reversible items. We’re including reversible clothing in our convertible travel clothing list because it is technically multi-way clothing that converts looks (but the looks are colors).

Learn more about my experience with Splice Clothing here .

1. Splice Clothing’s Jaisalmer Reversible 4-Way Tunic

splice tunic blue and green version

The Jaisalmer Reversible 4-Way Tunic from Splice Clothing is one of my favorites that I wear both when traveling and regularly in my normal life. Such a win!

Not only does this tunic offer a blue and green version, but you can also switch it back to front for either a v-neck or boat-neck look. It’s a super versatile tunic that I have layered in cool weather and worn alone on warmer days.

2. Splice Clothing’s Dubai Reversible Snap-up Top

splice clothing snap-up top

Made completely of cooling lyocell, the Dubai Reversible Snap-up Top is a long-sleeve, button-up shirt that goes from gray to black. It’s a lightweight top that feels amazing and works perfectly as a layer in warmer weather!

Here are some other reversible travel clothing options:

3. Helene Clarkson Aro Reversible Bootcut Pant

Convertible travel clothing - Helene Clarkson Aro Reversible Bootcut Pant

Not only are there tops that are reversible, but there are actually travel pants that are reversible as well. Most travelers don’t want to waste space in their backpacks packing multiple pairs of bulky pants . Luckily, with the Helene Clarkson Aro Reversible Bootcut Pants, you will have two pants options in one!

Choose between a solid black or a burgundy print for two completely different looks. To make things even better, the comfortable elastic waistband is easy to wear and ideal for all-day comfort plus the design is super flattering and resists sagging. They are made from a combination of cotton, polyester, and spandex.

4. Helene Clarkson Billy 4 Way Reversible Top

Convertible travel clothing - Helene Clarkson Billy 4 Way Reversible Top

Not only is the Helene Clarkson Billy Top reversible in color, but the neckline is also reversible which gives you four outfit options from one shirt. You can wear the neckline in either a classic V or crewneck and choose between a solid black color or a black and gold print .

It is made from a combination of polyester and spandex.

If these two Helene Clarkson pieces aren’t your cup of tea, there are many more reversible travel clothing pieces on their website .

5. Wayre Roma Reversible Wrap Dress

travel clothing convertible

Not only is a wrap dress a great option for traveling because it is so comfortable and versatile, but the Wayre Roma Reversible Wrap Dress can worn with either a v-neck or straight neck depending on which way you wear it. Plus it comes in lots of fun colors and prints and has a size range from XXS to XXXL.

While this dress is on the pricier side, it is stink, wrinkle, and spill-proof and it is ethically made from eco-friendly post-consumer recycled plastic. You might think this makes the material scratchy but it actually has a silk-like feel.

And it has two zippered side pockets and a hidden pocket perfect for storing your valuables. We LOVE pockets, especially if you’re traveling handbag-free .

Versatile Clothing That Doesn’t Convert

Some clothing doesn’t physically change like the zip-off pants or the Encircled Cardi, but they can be worn in dressy or casual settings depending on what else you wear. By packing clothes like this, you can use the same item for multiple situations.

Look for simple items that are comfortable and don’t automatically scream “gym wear.”

With the right cut and style, a pair of comfy black pants (like Encircled’s Dressy Sweatpants ) can be worn both on a long bus ride and out to dinner dressed up with a cute top and shoes to make the look a little fancier.

A solid-colored top can be worn with jeans to go sightseeing or with a skirt and a fun necklace for a night on the town.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Convertible Travel Clothing

While there are so many benefits to convertible travel clothing, it’s important to evaluate other factors as well before deciding to invest in an item before your trip. Things like the fabric and your trip style come into play , as fancy, slow-drying pieces won’t be good for your outdoor hiking adventure.

Don’t be swayed into buying a convertible item just because it’s convertible, especially if it has a high price tag. Check out these other factors to consider first.

Fabric Quality and Durability

Fabric is so important when it comes to travel clothing. Ideally, you want something durable, quick-drying, temperature-regulating, and easy to care for . Certain fabrics are better than others for travel.

For example, while cotton is comfortable and breathable it doesn’t wick moisture well, takes long to dry, and wrinkles easily. All fabrics have their pros and cons but you would be better off choosing something made of merino wool, bamboo, or tencel.

  • Take a look at this blog post for some more information: Best Fabrics for Travel Clothing .

Comfort and Fit

While an item of convertible travel clothing may technically check all the boxes, if it’s not comfortable and doesn’t fit you well, you’re not going to feel confident enough to wear it and it is just going to take up valuable space in your bag.

And if you do end up wearing it, you may be uncomfortable all day. Rather leave that convertible item behind and bring something versatile that you love with you instead.

Versatility

Make sure the convertible clothing item you buy is versatile. While you may think that because something can be worn in 30+ ways it instantly makes it versatile, that may not be the case.

Before you invest make sure the item can be worn and adapted to different climates and activities.

Style Preferences

There’s no point buying a dress that can be worn 10 ways if you absolutely never wear dresses. Rather look for some reversible pants instead. Remember, if you don’t wear something in your normal everyday life, you’re probably not going to wear it traveling either.

Thanks for this- I’ve heard of some of them, but others are new to me. So excited to see that the Chrysalis Cardi is at least theoretically available in a plus size option – hopefully the fact that it’s sold out while still marked as “New” will convince them to do another production run!

I’ve tried several convertible clothing items and have yet to find one that looks good on me. I have a large bust and a small waist. Any strapless style is OUT. I can’t get the convertible dresses to work! Either my bra straps are showing or the soft material clings to my bust, making it look huge. I’d love to hear of some pieces for a curvier figure.

' src=

July 15, 2016 at 2:47 pm

I am a D/E cup with a significantly smaller waist. Cowl necks are the way to go with a figure like ours! That and not cinching something all the way in to our natural waist, but just pulling it in a little bit.

I have the Cardi and when I tried to do their wrap dress (not shown in the above review) the belt was absolutely not working for me because it had to be tight to my natural waist. I found a different way around it by stealing the Hipknoties way of creating a waist (bunny ears they call it) and ended up buying Hipknoties bands after a few rubber bands of mine broke … which eventually led me to buying Hipknoties altogether.

Just a comment to say: I understand you! (and cowl neck all the things!)

I have and love both the Chrysalis Cardigan and the Evolve top. I do wish I had sized down for the evolve top, but I still love it – it’s just a looser fit.

' src=

July 19, 2016 at 7:21 pm

Monica, I totally agree. I bought a large Evolve top, but could definitely get away with the medium. That being said, the larger size is super comfy while still looking dressy if I want.

I love Diane Kroe’s stuff. And it is made to fit plus size too! Pricey but sooo worth it!

July 15, 2016 at 2:44 pm

I own an American Apparel circle scarf, a few maxi skirts, Versalette, Cardi, and Hipknoties. I’ve found that combining items from these three clothing systems makes my life even better. See @ http://ift.tt/296VvlF

That said, the tube-of-fabric concept is great and I think that Hipknoties bands ($8 for 10) are absolutely an essential tool in turning any tube of fabric into something draped and great. For a cheaper tube of fabric option, the local clothing store (especially with sales and coupons) can get you 2 yards of jersey/knit/stretchy which dries as quickly as you wish and is as sheer as you wish. If you cannot sew a straight seam to tube the fabric, a local tailor sure can for less than $10.

Most of my travel wardrobe now is tubes-of-fabric, undergarments, and a pair of faux-leather leggings. Everything else can be constructed on the spot depending on what I need.

Local *FABRIC* store, not clothing store.

That’ll teach me to not proofread my own writing. 😛

I love love love items that can be used for more than one purpose! That is my key to packing light on trips. Great post!

Yes! Do you have any items that you are currently using, Shelby?

' src=

July 26, 2016 at 4:03 pm

Really love the idea of all these items, even though they just are not exactly made for fashion-challenged me. Have always been a jeans & t-shirt kind of girl, still am, won’t change in the foreseeable future, but I always enjoy reading articles like this.

My favorite multi-purpose item right now has to be my string bikini top, which doubled as my everyday bra for almost all of our recent 4-week road trip. Comfortable, quick-drying, just the right support & cover for me.

Do Macabi Skirts count? I love mine, and along with some wool baselayers and a few linen and cotton tops, that’s most of my wardrobe, at home or on the road. I wear them as pants and shorts, mostly, in the summer; as a skirt in winter with wool leggings. Love the pockets and the easy wash and quick dry.

Also really interested in a review on Kameleon Rose! I have the encircled cardi (love it), the encircled evolve top (love it, but wish I had gotten a better color), and the hipknoties (didn’t feel secure and couldn’t figure out how to get it to look ok on me….a bummer), but always looking for more versatile clothing!

Function and Fashion *Can* Coexist — And These Convertible Pieces Prove It

multiwear clothing

Graphic by Giovanna Chung /KCM

We’re not just talking about zip-off cargo pants, people.

If the thought of convertible clothing conjures up images of zip-off cargo pants and reversible raincoats, it’s probably not the type of attire you’d deem appropriate for everyday wear. (Unless you’re spending every day hiking in the rainforest — in that case, we’re extremely jealous.)

For those of us who aren’t adventuring outdoors on a daily basis in multi-use clothing, having pieces that can be worn multiple ways and serve a variety of purposes makes more sense. We’re talking about a skirt that connects to a shirt to become a dress or a blazer that turns into a vest — items that can be easily altered into new garments and then easily turned back again. To us, convertible clothing also includes pieces that can be styled for both casual and dressy occasions .

Whether you want to pare down your wardrobe to save space, expand your wardrobe with a few new pieces, or just like the idea of having items that can be worn in a multitude of ways, these high-tech and versatile garments are the way to do it.

Depending on how you tie this blouse, you can have a flowy tunic or a fitted wrap shirt. Made with a silky fabric, you can effortlessly wear this as a drapey top or you can cross it over in the front and tie it in the back for a more romantic feel. In total, it can be worn five different ways.

Pistola Grover Short Sleeve Field Suit

pistola jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are a staple for Katie , mainly because they’re a one-and-done outfit and they can also be styled in a myriad of ways. This one from Pistola has adjustable tabs at the waist, so you can adjust the fit based on your mood, and you can easily roll the legs and sleeves to change the look. Wear it with heels for a date or sneakers for a weekend outing.

Alex Mill Button-Back Crewneck Sweater

woman wearing orange sweater with buttons on the back

Consider this the mullet of sweaters, and we mean that in the best way possible. With a plain front and buttons down the back (are you getting it yet?), you can wear it as a spunky crewneck, but turn it around and you instantly have a classic knit cardigan.

Reversible Quilted Jacket

Reversible Quilted Jacket

Quilts and quilted fabrics are back in full force with the arrival of the grandmillennial trend, and while some look more Little House on the Prairie than trendy, this one is certainly the latter. Made in a gorgeous olive on one side and a ditsy floral on the other, you can flip it either way to display a different pattern.

Halogen Funnel Neck Top

halogen funnel neck top

Turtlenecks are a wardrobe staple that will never go out of fashion, and that’s because they can be worn with literally anything. Put it under a button-down to add dimension to an outfit, wear it alone as a basic, or layer it under sleeveless tops or dresses to make them more seasonally appropriate. The possibilities are truly endless, especially since it comes in a wide range of sizes.

Everlane Quilted Mid-Length Liner Jacket

everlane liner jacket

For those few weeks of unpredictable weather between the changing seasons, a light jacket will do the trick. This one can be worn on its own as a lightweight coat, or you can layer it under a winter jacket to keep you warm on the coldest of days. If you think you’ll wear it on its own often, opt for the exciting camo print.

Vetta Convertible Blazer

woman wearing blazer

A tailored blazer can take jeans and a T-shirt up a notch, but it can also feel bulky if you want to layer. This one has removable sleeves so it can be worn as a vest over dresses and shirts, and you can easily reattach the sleeves without any sewing skills. They simply zip off and on thanks to a hidden zipper inside the shoulder seams.

Pashion Footwear Convertible Bootie

woman taking heel off bootie

We’ve all carried a backup pair of shoes in our bags for days when we know we’ll be walking long distances or when we want to wear cute shoes that aren’t comfortable, but what if you could save yourself some bag space and trouble? These booties have heels that can be taken off and swapped for different heights and styles, making them the ultimate transformer shoe. Go from heels to flats in seconds, all with a simple snap mechanism that keeps the heels in place.

Fleece-Lined Tights

lined tights

Don’t let cooler temps stop you from showing off your legs. If you like wearing dresses and skirts even during the winter, a pair of tights can add coverage and warmth to your look. Pantyhose don’t always cut it when cold wind blows by, but this pair is actually made with flesh-toned fleece to make it look like you’re wearing sheer hose, all while keeping your legs toasty. You can also wear these under pants or leggings as an extra layer on extremely chilly days.

Lulus Infinity Dress

woman wearing long black dress from lulus

From weddings to beach vacations, this infinity dress will serve you well. It’s essentially a maxi skirt with two seven-foot strips of fabric sewn at the waist, but you can fold, twist, and wrap those pieces in hundreds of different ways to create an entirely custom bodice. The hardest part will be deciding on what your favorite look is.

Athleta Delancy Moto Tights

athleta moto leggings

After three years of working from home, leggings have become our pant of choice (other than sweatpants, of course). While you probably aren’t wearing your leggings to the office or out to a nice dinner, we think you could get away with both in these moto tights. They have ribbed detailing at the knees and hips, and the pockets on the back mimic those on dress pants. Consider these your new wear everywhere bottoms.

Madewell Transport Shoulder Crossbody Bag

madewell transport tote

Between work, weddings, and other outings, we all need a crossbody, a clutch, and a shoulder bag, but not everyone has the closet space or budget for all three. Plus, having to switch your belongings from purse to purse gets risky — and if your wallet doesn’t fit in one of the bags, you may as well forget the entire endeavor. This leather bag from Madewell can be transformed into any of the aforementioned styles at the clip (or unclip) of a strap, making bag changes easier than ever.

woman wearing black belt bag

The fanny pack is back and better than ever. We rave about belt bags often here at Katie Couric Media, and we’re quite fond of this style that can be worn crossbody or around your waist.

Wayre Roma Reversible Wrap Dress

wayre wrap dress

If you tend to be the person who has to sit on their suitcase to get it to close, you may want to consider adding a few convertible pieces from Wayre on your next packing list. This dress can be worn forward or backward depending on your mood, and it’s made from recycled water bottles. Several other pieces by the brand can be worn in more than one way, and everything is made from anti-stink fabric that dries quickly if you need to wash it while traveling.

Pinsy Scoop Tank Hourglass Shapewear

pinsy tank top bodysuit

If you find bodysuits, especially shaping ones, to be extremely uncomfortable, let this one change your mind. It’s made from a soft, stretchy material on the outside, and the inside has a built-in bra and mesh fabric that supports your tummy and creates shape without feeling constrictive. Commerce editor Katie P. has several of Pinsy’s bodysuits, and she swears by them both as tank tops and under dresses and jackets when she wants some smoothing.

The 8 Best Carry-On Backpacks

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

  • Best for rugged trips

Even though much of my job as a travel writer involves testing suitcases , I usually prefer to fly with a carry-on backpack when I have the choice. You just can’t beat the sense of freedom that comes with strapping your possessions to your shoulders and heading to the airport — to me, a suitcase says “business trip” whereas a backpack says “adventure.” Not to mention the fact that backpack wearers are almost never singled out at the gate to check their luggage.

As backpack reviewer Geoff Grisdale of One Bag Travels explains, a carry-on backpack means “you can move around a lot quicker — it’s a lot easier to travel around cities with one.” Suitcases become cumbersome as soon as you’re confronted with cobblestone streets or multiple flights of stairs, adds freelance backpack designer Jeff Mullins. “And you have to have room to store them when you get home, whereas a backpack can be compressed.” Below, you’ll find the best carry-on backpacks for different sorts of trips, as tested by myself and other globetrotting experts. While you’re here, I’ve also written guides to the best travel pillows and the best toiletry bottles .

What we’re looking for

For trips longer than a weekend, you’ll require a carry-on backpack with a capacity of at least 28 liters, says Grisdale. From there, the size you choose will depend on your packing style, how long the trip is, and whether you need room for warm layers or extra shoes. Most of the experts I spoke with agreed that the sweet spot is somewhere between 28 and 35 liters.

Some carry-on backpacks can be as large as 45 liters, which is actually five liters more volume than an Away carry-on suitcase . While this size of backpack can be useful for long-haul trips, just note that it will be “really big and heavy — and you lose a lot of the mobility you’d get when carrying a smaller backpack,” says Grisdale. Mullins agrees: “If you’re a smaller woman, for example, I don’t think you should go over 35 liters.” Even though I’ll happily hike with an ultralight 55 liter backpack, I’m not a fan of wearing carry-on bags larger than 40 liters — they’re significantly bulkier, and the back pain afterwards just isn’t worth it.

Packing style

The best carry-on backpacks are designed for ease of packing. Rather than unzipping at the top, they’ll either open up like a clamshell (with separate zippered compartments on either side), or like a duffel bag (with one big compartment that’s accessible from the front of the bag). If you’re an intentional packer who likes to keep organized on the road, the former option is likely best. But Grisdale notes that duffel-style bags are usually quicker and easier to pack because “you can just stuff your gear in there and off you go.”

Your backpack will be crammed into overhead bins or underneath aircraft seats, so look for one that’s fairly rectangular in shape, with straps and a hip belt that can be removed or tucked away. “Anything that dangles has to be gone,” says Mullins. He also notes that there should be a handle on pretty much every side of the bag, so you can grab it from whichever space it’s wedged.

Organizational features

A nice thing about living out of a backpack as opposed to a suitcase is that exterior pockets provide easy access to small items like wallets and passports. I also love that backpacks typically have loops or straps on the outside to which you can attach carabiners and clips. A good backpack will enable you to “get to all your small stuff without fully opening it,” says Mullins. “Whether that’s your phone, earbuds, book, glasses, or food.” You still don’t want a backpack with too many pockets, as these will steal real estate from the main compartment inside. “I like enough exterior pockets to be able to hold gear but not so many pockets that they take up a lot of room in the bag,” says Grisdale.

Best carry-on backpack overall

Cotopaxi Allpa 35 L Travel Pack

Capacity: 35 liters | Packing style: Clamshell, tuckaway straps, removable waist belt | Organizational features: External laptop sleeve, top pocket, carabiner loops

The Cotopaxi Allpa is truly a backpack for suitcase people. Its clamshell design unzips fully to reveal a large mesh compartment on the right-hand side and three smaller ones on the left, mimicking the layout of rolling luggage. It also has a hidden laptop sleeve in the back that’s generously padded (I once checked my Allpa with a MacBook inside and the laptop survived unscathed), as well as an easy-access storage compartment on top that can fit snacks, a book, and your passport. The bag is comfortable to carry, with a sternum strap and removable waist belt for extra support. It comes in three different sizes, but this 35-liter version will be the best for most people — it’s big enough for a week’s worth of clothes but small enough that you can use it as an airline personal item or large daypack. (Strategist contributing writer Margaret Eby took one on a flight to Italy in addition to a rolling suitcase, and says the tuckaway straps helped her squish it under the seat in front of her.) One gripe: There’s no external water-bottle holder on the Allpa 35, although you could easily attach a carabiner to any of its handles or lash loops.

The best carry-on duffel backpack

Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC

Capacity: 30 liters | Packing style: Duffel, tuckaway straps, tuckaway waist belt, convertible shoulder strap, trolley sleeve | Organizational features: External laptop compartment, top pocket, water bottle holder

Patagonia’s Mini MLC is constantly sold out, and for good reason. This is an unusually roomy and rugged bag that can be used as your main piece of carry-on luggage (it’s available in a 45-liter version as well, if you prefer to overpack) or as a personal item that sits atop your wheeled carry-on. (Former Strategist associate editor Louis Cheslaw refers to his as a “ secret second suitcase ,” because it lets him pack heavy without checking a bag.) Unlike the Allpa, the Mini MLC opens duffel-style, revealing a deep interior compartment that can fit several outfits and a pair of extra shoes. There’s also a laptop compartment, small stash pocket on top of the bag that’s big enough for a passport or wallet, and stretchy water-bottle holder.

The best (less-expensive) carry-on backpack

TomToc Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack

Capacity: 40 liters | Packing style: Duffel opening, compression straps | Organizational features: External laptop compartment, water bottle holder, quick-access front pocket

At less than half the price of the Allpa or Mini MLC, TomToc’s Navigator is a thoughtfully designed carry-on backpack with a large capacity and helpful organizational features. It zips open at the front to reveal a generous duffel compartment that can be filled with several outfits, whether or not you’re using packing cubes . There’s also a front pocket that’s big enough for a book, as well as a laptop sleeve in the back that can be fully unzipped, revealing extra storage space for documents, cables, and stationery. It’s an excellent affordable option, according to Grisdale.

The best carry-on backpack for business travel

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro

Capacity: 30 liters | Packing style: Clamshell, removable waist belt | Organizational features: External laptop compartment, top pocket, front pocket, water bottle holders

Tortuga’s backpack designs are highly respected among gear reviewers across the internet. I’ve been testing out its very professional-looking Travel Backpack Pro, which opens clamshell-style to reveal two suitcase-style compartments and also features a nicely padded laptop sleeve with a false bottom for extra protection. The sternum straps are extremely comfortable and can be tucked away when not in use, the bag’s rectangular shape means it slots easily into overhead lockers (as well as airline baggage sizers — mine recently passed the Spirit Airlines personal item test with flying colors), and I like that the exterior fabric is highly waterproof and easy to wipe down. It’s also much more anonymous-looking than Cotopaxi’s colorful Allpa or Patagonia’s gorp-y Mini MLC, which makes it ideal for business travelers and digital nomads.

The best carry-on backpack with lumbar support

Osprey Fairview 40 Travel Backpack

Capacity: 40 liters | Packing style: Duffel, adjustable tuckaway hip belt and harness | Organizational features: External laptop sleeve, external toiletries pocket

When spending her year abroad as the inaugural New York Times 52 Places traveler, journalist Jada Yuan learned the hard way that rolling luggage is terrible for long-haul travel. “I don’t know how I got through 16 stops of my trip before buying the Osprey Fairview,” she recalls. “My back and shoulders hurt all the time. I needed something with strong lumbar support, a waist belt, and a chest strap so that I could make it through the trip without getting crippled.” The Fairview’s packing style she says, is perfectly bare-bones: “Just one giant cavity, plus a zippered section for your laptop and a bunch of straps on the outside for carrying, say, a bulky jacket.” It’s definitely the most comfortable backpack on this list, says Grisdale: “Osprey’s packs are good because they have a lot of padding, they’re really thick, and they’re also adjustable. So if it doesn’t fit you right out of the box, you can move things around.”

Best carry-on duffel backpack for long trips

Away The Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L

Capacity: 45 liter | Packing style: Duffel, compression straps, removable shoulder straps, trolley sleeve | Organizational features: External laptop compartment, hidden top pocket for valuables

Away is best known for its hard luggage, but the DTC brand’s outdoor gear shouldn’t be overlooked. Brand marketing consultant Jennifer Olson came across this big duffel-backpack while gearing up for an eight-month road trip through South America with her partner. “We’d be living in a converted Land Cruiser and needed baggage soft and malleable enough to be thrown around the back of a truck and wedged into small spaces,” she explains. “Though we’d be hiking here and there, we weren’t doing any hardcore treks, so we didn’t need a traditional trekking backpack — but rather something in between.” True to Away’s suitcase-y roots, the bag’s internal storage compartment features compression straps that are designed to secure a set of packing cubes , which Olson says really helped keep things organized on her big trip. And the convertible straps have come in handy now that she’s returned home: “I usually use it as a duffle when I’m on weekend trips or using it as a carry on, and when the bag is a little more loaded with my things, I use it in backpack mode to disperse the weight.”

The best carry-on backpack for short trips

ULA Ultra Dragonfly

Capacity: 30 liters | Packing style: Duffel, compression straps | Organizational features: Internal laptop sleeve, stretchy side and front pockets, front bungee elastic

I first heard about the ULA Ultra Dragonfly when lurking on the 729,000-member-strong sub-Reddit r/OneBag , which has popularized the idea of bringing no more than one smallish bag on trips and vacations. And while many One Baggers own Allpas and MLCs, this is the bag they covet most. It unzips duffel-style, with a Goldilocks-size 30-liter capacity that means it can hold a decent amount of stuff but still slide underneath a plane seat if needed. There’s no hip belt, but uniquely shaped shoulder straps are designed to be worn for hours at a time without discomfort. There’s a laptop sleeve for digital nomads, and the Ultra fabric is slightly stretchy (allowing for a bit of overpacking), unusually durable (similar to ripstop nylon), and highly waterproof (which makes it appropriate for treks and other more rugged adventures). There’s just one catch: Due to stock issues, you can only purchase the Dragonfly Ultra once a week on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. ET. Within a couple of hours, the bag sells out and its buy button disappears for another seven days.

The best carry-on backpack for rugged trips

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel

Capacity: 45 liters | Packing style: Duffel, tuckaway shoulder straps, compression straps | Organizational features: External shoe compartments, external laptop sleeve, passport pocket

More duffel-shaped than some of the very suitcase-y backpacks on this list, Timbuk2’s unique carry-on has zip-up shoe pockets at each end, allowing you to separate dirty footwear from the rest of your stuff — an especially nice feature for anyone packing a pair of hiking shoes . I also like how waterproof this bag is. All of the fabric is easy to wipe down, and the bottom of the bag has an extra protective “boot” which means you can plonk it down anywhere without worrying about it getting muddy. “The very considered design is ideal for someone who is most at home hopping on and off planes and trains,” says Andrew Barker, the former chief content officer of the travelers club, PRIOR . He appreciates the TSA-friendly slip pockets, which give easy access to your laptop and passport.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

I recently had a chance to check out two of her multi-way items: the Wanderlust Wrap and the Endless. Keep reading for your exclusive discount and find out more about how they work. I guarantee you’ll want to add them to your travel wardrobe!

Convertible Clothing for Travel: Diane Kroe

Wanderlust wrap.

The Wanderlust Wrap was a wonderful surprise! It’s convertible clothing for travel done right. It’s also the newest item in Diane Kroe’s collection.

Truthfully, I don’t think the pictures online do the wrap justice. Not only was it an item I could wear while traveling it’s also something I’d confidently wear at home, too. It is so versatile and offers travelers plenty of options for different looks from a single item.

Versatility is key to a capsule wardrobe. Learn more in my guide !

Why It’s Worth It

convertible-clothing-for-travel

Photography by  Luna Vandoorne | Location:  HM Hotel in Playa del Carmen

Lightweight and soft, the wrap boats a luxe knit hybrid fabric with dropped shoulders, batwing sleeves, and an invisible zipper in the back.

It’s available in a variety of colors and prints. I tried out the boho-rust  – a red bohemian Southwestern-inspired print. Love it! (And I’m totally lusting for the grey-leopard print, too. Perfect for my favorite color story!)

The image above shows the Wanderlust Wrap as a cardigan but there are three other ways to style it: sweater, long sleeve top, or skirt-like sarong. Even if I didn’t use all four styling options the cardigan and top make the garment worth getting.

It will easily fit inside your  packing cubes to maximize the space in your bag.

Wear it as a Warm Layer

convertible-clothing-for-travel

(worn with Naot sandals )

You can style the Wanderlust Wrap in two ways to create a light but warm layer: wear it loosely as a front-opened cardigan as shown above or drape it, fold it, and button it to create a sweater as shown below.

I first tried on the cardigan style, which is super easy to wear and can be paired over anything. Use it as part of your flight travel outfit or sightseeing look by adding leggings , a plain top , comfy sandals and some earrings. I like this comfortable yet stylish plane look. Don’t forget a cute backpack and carryon suitcase !

convertible-clothing-for-travel

I’ve also worn the wrap over a white slip dress and sandals or a basic top and denim as shown here. I love how the print makes an outfit pop especially if you’re working with a majority of neutrals in your travel wardrobe.

Secret: I’m wearing the slip dress tucked into my shorts so it doubles up as a tank top!

convertible-clothing-for-travel

As the temperature has occasionally dropped to a “cool” 65F-70F here in Playa del Carmen, we’ve been feeling the winter and a light but warm cardigan like this is just what you need.

Wear it as a Top

convertible-clothing-for-travel

Aside from acting as a light layer in moderate or transitional weather, you can also transform the wrap into a top. I liked the open cardi style but I LOVED it as a top!

Having the full color and print really brought my outfit to another level. This style option can be dressed up or down as needed. Pair it with jeans and brown boots or even leather shorts and flats the way I have here.

convertible-clothing-for-travel

Notice the “neutral” snake-print ballet flats ? Now, that’s my kind of a neutral !

Wear the Wanderlust Wrap on it’s own when the weather is warm and add a long sleeve top underneath for cooler climates. The hidden zipper is incredibly clever. It’s rare to see convertible clothing for travel that’s so well designed.

The Wanderlust Wrap is brand new and was just revealed this weekend! It retails for $125 in Canada, which is about $95 USD right now – currently a great exchange rate for the dollar! TFG readers get 10% off until March 6, 2016. Use the code WANDERLUST to claim your discount!  Shop now!

The Endless

convertible-clothing-for-travel

While the Wanderlust Wrap just joined me in time for Playa del Carmen’s “winter” months, I’ve been wearing the Endless since November.

In fact, it’s one of the things I’ve worn the most since moving here. Why? It’s airy, comfortable, and casual yet glam at the same time.

It’s also one of Diane Kroe’s most popular pieces! It’s convertible clothing for travel you can wear in various feminine ways. Here are a few of my favorite looks!

Flowy Skirt

convertible-clothing-for-travel

(worn with this awesome travel cami )

Appropriate in various destinations, you can use it comfortably on a plane, to go sightseeing during the day, and then dress it up at night with strappy heels for dinner. The fabric is seriously soft and cozy! You’ll never want to take it off.

convertible-clothing-for-travel

You can also adjust the way it sits on your hips to change the angle of the hem. Another simple outfit transformation!

convertible-clothing-for-travel

I like matching it with a basic black or white top like the one shown in the picture  to complement the vibrant print. The endless is also available in a wide array of colors and prints and comes in three sizes: XS/S, M/L, and L/XL.

Off the Shoulder Top

convertible-clothing-for-travel

What can I say? An off-the-shoulder top always makes me feel sexy. This has been my go-to look for boat cruises, rooftop parties, and sunset drinks here in Playa. Not what you usually expect from convertible clothing for travel.

convertible-clothing-for-travel

Wear it as a tunic with leggings for a casual look, add a mini skirt or plain bodycon dress for a nighttime outfit, or combine it with shorts and strappy sandals for dressy daytime style the way I’ve shown above.

You can also wear it alone as a cover-up while laying in your beach bed or poolside cabana. Pull the “sleeve” under your arm for a sleeveless tube-top dress or tunic.

convertible-clothing-for-travel

Seamlessly transition the Endless into a summer top by tying the ends together resulting in a low draped sleeveless halter. Layer a tube top or bandeau underneath for extra coverage or show some skin with a bikini top.

convertible-clothing-for-travel

You can pair it with jeans or shorts, worn casually with sandals or dressed up in heels. Alternatively, wear with a mini skirt for a night out dancing. My top pick? The off-the-shoulder style of course!

This is another of my favorite designers…Thank you Alex!! I have a couple of the Wear Ever Dress, the skirt that turns into shorts, 2 Mariposas which I love and a couple of tops…Plus Diane herself is so friendly and accommodating. She will respond and always take care of you. She has beautiful prints…very easy travel clothes and fun to find different ways to wear them…So good!

Priscilla

I just ordered one in navy! Hope the size (S/M) works well for me… thanks Alex for sharing this!

Alex

Hi Priscilla, thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂

Christina Taylor

Loving this blog! Thinking about adding a couple of Diane Kroe pieces to my wardrobe – the Wrap Top and either an Endless or a Carry On Cozy. Wondering if anyone who has tried both likes one over the other?

Hi Christina, thank you so much for your feedback! We’ll share your question here so the author of the article can reply. 🙂

Kat

Christina – I bought and attempted to return both the Wrap Top and the Carry-On-Cozy. See my other comment for details.

Renee Martin

After reading this post, I was dying to try some convertible clothes from Diane Kroe! The Wanderlust was sold out but I bought an Endless in the same vibrant color that Alex was wearing. I ADORE it. I was recently in Victoria, BC and it was a perfectly pretty top that kept the chill off my shoulders. Later in the day when it got hot, I tied it as a halter top. I bring it with me everywhere – on the plane, to work and in the car – I am surprised how often I use it! I’ve since bought a few more pieces from Diane Kroe and have enjoyed the craftsmanship and versatility of them. Thanks for featuring this super-cool clothing line Alex!

Travel Fashion Girl

Wonderful news Renee! So glad that you tried the product out and that you love it as much as we do! Safe travels!

CHRISTINE

I love my Endless also. Mine is in the Tahiti print.

Jan

I love this convertible clothing. As someone who travels each week for work it has the qualities I love – easy care and can be worn in a number of different ways, as well as being dresses up or down. And, of course, not bulky to pack as I too love minimal luggage. Perfect

I’m glad you like it Jan 🙂 I totally agree!

Kim

I love to travel with convertible, multiple duty clothing items. They take up less room, and are so easy and fun to plan your travel wardrobe with. I’m definitely going to plan on The Wanderlust Wrap as my next travel essential purchase. Thank you for the great tips!

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have 🙂

What a gorgeous print for a wrap! Nice to see colourful travel clothes! Plus those Sabrina Naot sandals look like just what I’ve been looking for! Thanks heaps!

The sandals are AWESOME! Enjoy 🙂

Thanks Linda!

Carolyn

I love both the Wanderlust Wrap and the Endless on you – the prints are just gorgeous. Being from Australia, I haven’t head of Diane’s convertible travel clothing before but I bet these would be great items to have on my regular travels to Europe.

She has an amazing collection and truly listens to her customer’s needs 🙂

Mindy

Thanks Alex. This is exactly what I was looking for! My husband and I are excited to embark on our first sail trip through the BVI this May and convertible pieces would be a great way to save space. Your photos helped me see beyond their website photos and experience the beauty and versatility of each piece.

That’s great Mindy! I hope you have an amazing trip 🙂 here are a few more tips for sailing the BVI: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-a-sailing-trip-in-the-british-virgin-islands/

Gerri W

Those pieces look great on you. And you are correct- the photos on the website do not to justice to her interesting and versatile clothing.

Thanks Gerri! The Wanderlust Wrap was so not what I expected – in a good way 🙂

Micheline

Love Diane’s clothing. I’ve collected several pieces over the years. I have a couple of the Endless and managed to pick up the Wanderer at a show before Christmas. She clothing washes and travels so well.

That’s great Micheline! What are your favorite pieces?

Joan

Beautiful photos! these pieces look great on you! I would’ve loved theEndless on my Cancun trip!

Thanks Joan! The Endless is perfection here in the Riviera Maya!

Andres Gonzalez, dressed in a blue suit, stands in front of a large statue of Jesus. Alec Crawley, sitting on a bench several feet away, points a phone at him.

For Mormon Missionaries, Some ‘Big, Big Changes’

The church has loosened its strict rules for those evangelizing. And many members of Gen-Z are loving it.

Lauren attended church in London, Los Angeles and Paris and spoke with current and former missionaries to report this story.

  • May 10, 2024

Andres Gonzalez, 19, stands on the balcony of his Los Angeles apartment, his hands in his suit pockets. It is his first week as a missionary, but today, instead of approaching people on the street, he is shooting a video that he will later post to social media.

After about a dozen takes, he is successful. “Hello! If you would like to learn more about Jesus Christ,” he says to the camera in Spanish, “contact me.”

Mr. Gonzalez is the image of the modern missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has changed many of its practices — from how missionaries preach to how they dress.

The faith, long known for sending tens of thousands of neatly and formally dressed young people across the globe each year to preach door to door, is encouraging new missionaries to spread the gospel on social media and, for some, with acts of community service closer to home.

As a church leader, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, put it, missionaries should feel comfortable sharing their faith in “ normal and natural ways .”

In the last few years, the church has also changed some rules for missionaries themselves — loosening restrictions on dress codes ( women can wear pants ) and how often they can call family members back home ( once a week , not just on Christmas and Mother’s Day).

To outsiders, the adjustments may seem small. But to missionaries who adhere to strict rules while on assignment, the shifts are dramatic.

“We’ve seen a lot of big, big changes,” Jensen Diederich, 23, said. He served his mission in Peru and said it was “monumental” when the church allowed him to call home weekly, instead of just twice a year.

The church believes missionary work is essential for the world’s salvation — that people must be baptized in the faith to get to the highest level of heaven after they die. Missionary work also helps increase the church’s membership, and it deepens many young members’ faith. Many missionaries begin their assignments just after they leave home. Instead of partying on a college campus, they commit themselves to the religion and develop habits that can last a lifetime.

One of those members was Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, who was a missionary in France in the 1960s. He has said the isolation of his mission allowed him to examine his faith without distraction . When asked about the changes, he said, “For young people of my generation, I think the separation from family and friends served us well.”

Mr. Crawley, left, and Mr. Gonzalez, both wearing white dress shirts and ties, stand on a street. In front of them is a woman looking to the side. Mr. Gonzalez is holding a card in his hands.

But he understands times have changed. “With today’s youth in near constant contact with one another, maintaining greater connection during a mission fits their life experience,” he added.

Many young church members say the new rules have made missionary service more attractive and realistic.

Kate Kennington, a 19-year-old with a mission assignment to London, said finding people online and messaging them is a more successful way of approaching potential converts. “It’s how I would want to be contacted,” she said.

“Knocking on doors and approaching people on the street are no longer seen as useful as they once were because of shifts in American culture,” said Matthew Bowman, a professor of religion and history at Claremont Graduate University who holds the chair of Mormon studies. He is also a church member.

For decades, missionaries’ clean-cut suits were signs of prosperity, Mr. Bowman said, and an effective way of appealing to converts. But they now feel “outdated.”

Many of the changes, especially the push to evangelize on social media, were fueled by the pandemic, which shut down in-person church gatherings and forced Latter-day Saints and Jehovah’s Witnesses to find alternatives to door-to-door preaching.

The missionaries use their phones to film videos of themselves promoting the church or sharing messages of faith. In one video , a missionary raps about his faith. In another , two missionaries throw a football and a Frisbee through an obstacle course in a church gym — an object lesson meant to visualize how Jesus Christ can help people overcome challenges.

So far, the changes appear to be working: In the last three years, as pandemic restrictions lifted and young members responded to an appeal from the church’s top leader for them to serve, the number of full-time proselytizing missionaries has risen by around 25 percent , according to church data. At the end of last year, the church had about 72,000 full-time missionaries serving around the world.

The church has just under 17.3 million members globally but has seen growth slow. From 1988 to 1989, during a surge in growth when the church expanded into West Africa , the church grew by about 9 percent . Last year, the church grew by about 1.5 percent .

A tradition of travel

Missionary work is a rite of passage for Latter-day Saints — and has been since the church’s founding in 1830.

The church’s missionaries have traveled the world, growing their faith from a fledgling start-up in upstate New York to a global religion that brings in billions of dollars in revenue .

Church leaders say it is men’s responsibility to become missionaries for two years starting at age 18. Missionary work is optional for women, who serve for 18 months. The church has historically encouraged women to focus on marriage and motherhood. But since 2012, when the church lowered the age women could become missionaries to 19 from 21, more women have been going .

Missionaries leave their families and friends, learn new languages and spend the first years of their adulthood spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

While on a mission, they cannot date and must follow the religion’s ban on premarital sex, drinking, smoking, coffee and caffeinated tea. Communication with friends and family back home is restricted. They commit to stay focused on their work, and their proximity to their missionary partner creates a sense of accountability that keeps most from breaking the rules.

Until recently, the experience of young missionaries was similar to that of their parents. They first attended a missionary training center — a religious boot camp of sorts — before then traveling to their missions.

Most missionaries now start their training online at home , where the transition is less jarring. They can adapt to a mission schedule with their family’s support. Being home is also an opportunity for new missionaries to evangelize in their community.

“I’ve had friends who aren’t members of the church,” Tanner Bird, a 19-year-old missionary in Brazil who did part of his training at home in Houston. “And I just get super, super excited and talk to them about the gospel.”

Once deployed, men in some areas are allowed to wear blue shirts and go without ties , while women can wear wrinkle-resistant dress pants in “conservative colors.” Most missionaries now have smartphones and call their families weekly.

Some traditions remain: Young missionaries still do not get to pick their destinations. Many teenagers throw parties to open their assignments, reading their “call letter” aloud for the first time in front of family and friends. Others film elaborate announcement videos — including on ice skates . Some serve close to home (there are 10 missions in Utah). Others go as far as Tahiti or Tokyo.

Mr. Gonzalez, the missionary in Los Angeles, said he first imagined going on a mission when he was a child in Venezuela. His parents, who converted to the faith, often had young missionaries over for meals. After the church helped the family settle in Utah, he said serving as a missionary was part of his “American dream.”

Every morning, he wakes up at 6:30 a.m., the set time for many missionaries, with his “companion,” an assigned missionary partner. They are mandated to “never be alone,” with few exceptions, and each day follow a missionary schedule .

On Facebook, they contact people they have met, including those they have approached on the street in downtown Los Angeles. They also search groups for people who may be open to their message and post videos to generate interest in their faith. They keep track of potential converts’ progress, including lessons they teach. Every Monday, Mr. Gonzalez calls his parents.

Calls are also an opportunity for him to receive support. “It’s a little bit hard,” Mr. Gonzalez said of his mission work, describing people in downtown Los Angeles as “busy.” Still, he remains hopeful: “Some of them, they really are ready. They make time, even just like five minutes.”

The missionary experience is not for everyone. Some people feel isolated, find it difficult to adapt to a location, or struggle with the rules or the pressure to keep their commitment. Some people do leave early; the church does not comment on those who do.

Alex McAlpin, a 23-year-old who went on a mission to Denver, almost did not put in a missionary application. Before her mission, she attended Pepperdine University, where she wrestled with some aspects of church doctrine and history.

Then the church made its dress code change, allowing women to wear pants in 2018.

“That was the first day of my life that I thought maybe I would go” on a mission, Ms. McAlpin said. She saw the new dress code and the church’s other mission changes as a sign the church was evolving and listening to its younger members, many of whom hope their church will modernize in larger ways. “I wanted to be a part of the change.”

Dating apps are struggling to live up to investors’ expectations . Blame the members of Generation Z, who are often not willing to shell out for paid subscriptions.

Young people tend to lean more liberal on issues pertaining to relationship norms. But when it comes to dating, the idea that men should pay in heterosexual courtships  still prevails among Gen Z-ers .
