Albeit, a stay at a winery hotel in these two regions is something not to miss… We’ve uncorked a few wonderful winery hotels throughout the country to sip in, including those in Napa Valley and Sonoma as well as some underrated wine regions – Alaska, Idaho, Colorado, New York, Washington – to help enhance your next wine country experience.

Winery Hotels in the United States: It’s one thing to visit wine country, it’s another to immerse yourself in it. Staying onsite at a working vineyard is the perfect way to do just that. With every one of the 50 states in the United States producing wine, a visit to a winery hotel can easily be done – and we’re not just talking about winery hotels in Napa Valley or Sonoma, although they are home to some great ones. Wine Country Inn, Palisades, Colorado

We’re ALMOST cheating by listing the Wine Country Inn in Colorado’s wine region, the Palisades. This winery hotel is not owned and operated by a vineyard, but the Victorian style hotel sits in the middle of 21 acres of vines that produce grapes, which are crushed and bottled as the Inn’s signature label wines. And, it is adjacent to two wineries. So, it can still be deemed as a winery hotel…at least according to us.

Hermann Hill Vineyard and Inn, Hermann Missouri

Located on top of a hill overlooking the town of Hermann in Missouri, Hermann Hill Vineyard and Inn offers an exquisite view of not only the quaint little town of Herman, but of the Missouri River and the surrounding vineyards, including those on its own property. Each room at Herman Hill include a full size working hot tub, private patio and a steam shower in the oversized, luxurious bathroom.

The rooms themselves are beautifully decorated, totally updated with new furniture, plush linens and a cute little sitting area for you to watch the sunrise or simply sip some local wine. One of the more personalized things about the Herman Hills Inn I loved during my stay was the 9 o’clock cookie delivery. Every evening the owner personally delivers fresh baked cookies to each room, along with a scoop of ice cream topped with a bit of local Missouri port wine. It’s a delicious way to end the evening. Known for its world-class sparkling wines, Kent’s Balfour Winery is home to lush English vineyards, acres of ancient apple orchards and oak woodlands – perfect for nature and wine lovers alike. Located on the Hush Heath Estate, take a self-guided stroll or book for a full estate tour and tasting experience from £45-£65, where an expert will show you around the vineyards, learning about the secrets and history of Balfour as you stroll. The winery’s contemporary building, The View, offers sweeping views across the Kentish countryside, perfect for unwinding with a glass post-tasting. After, visit the winery shop where you’ll find plenty of sparkling and still wines, luxury hampers and gifts.

More like this

Open all year round, Balfour Winery hosts social events throughout the year, such as its dining club music sessions, jazz evenings and yoga classes followed by food and wine tasting.

What to eat: You may want to add a sharing platter to your tour booking to enjoy alongside the wines – think local Kentish charcuterie, seafood and cheese served with olives, quince jam, flatbread and crackers. If you’re visiting during the winter months, opt for the warm winter platter of local cheeses, baked camembert, house-made chutney and warm bread. A short drive away and you’ll find Balfour-owned The Tickled Trout, serving its signature fish dishes and hearty pub classics which reflect the best of Kentish produce.

What to drink: A visit to Balfour is not complete without a taste of its flagship Balfour Brut Rosé 2018 – we’d also make a beeline for the Springfield Chardonnay 2018.

Where to stay: The Tickled Trout is part of a collection of Kentish pubs and hotels selling wines from Balfour and Jake’s Beers and Ciders. Boutique rooms are simple, cosy and inviting, with exposed beams, shabby chic décor, modern bathroom fittings and sink-into beds. They also come kitted out with a large flat screen TV, Dualit coffee pod machine and a selection of tea from Joe’s Tea. From £89 for a double.

Nutbourne Vineyards, West Sussex

Visit Nutbourne Vineyards , stay at Cattlestone Farm, check availability here.

Set in the West Sussex countryside, Nutbourne Vineyards has been in the Gladwin family since 1991. The family also owns a selection of restaurants in London where you'll find wines from the vineyard. Sustainability is at the core of the operation, from following biodiverse practices in the vineyard (hence wildflower meadows in amongst the vines) to efforts to reduce the carbon footprint in distribution and production.

The vineyard trail is open all year round. Pick up an illustrated map and go on a self-guided tour around the different fields to discover the different grapes grown in each area and enjoy the views across the South Downs. The Cellar Door is open to pick up a bottle at the end of your visit. Guided tours and tastings are also available.

What to eat: Nutbourne offers a range of dining experiences at the vineyard throughout the year, from picnics in the summer to burgers & bubbly evenings. For a flying visit, cheese and crackers are available from April to November. Tour the vineyard, then graze on a special cheeseboard (centred around a whole Baron Bigod brie) on the viewing platform while sipping a glass of wine. For a truly memorable experience, time your visit to coincide with the Nutbourne Vineyard supper clubs on Thursday and Saturday evenings throughout summer (from £95). Hosted by the Gladwin family, you’ll enjoy a sparkling reception before enjoying a five course meal out in the vineyard, with each course matched to a different Nutbourne vintage. Produce is locally sourced, and dishes might include South Coast sea bream served with Nutbourne tomatoes, and roasted Sussex beef from Gregory Gladwin. The menu changes each month to make the most of seasonal produce.

What to drink: The 'Nutty Blush' rosé made from Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir is a light pale pink hue, with floral notes and gentle berry acidity – ideal for summer sipping. Red wine fans will enjoy the Pinot Noir, with a portion of the wine aged in French oak to add depth. Bottles are all illustrated with Bridget Gladwin's paintings.

What to stay: Nearby Cattlestone Farm has a range of camping and glamping accommodation options to choose from. Pitch a tent in the open field or book a yurt and use the outdoor kitchen, complete with a pizza oven. You might even get to spot the goats, named Gin and Tonic. If you can, book the newly renovated luxury Sunrise shepherd's hut. It's impressively spacious and cosy inside, with a comfy king-size bed. Wake up and open the double doors on to your wrap-around deck, with an outdoor roll-top bath and chairs to enjoy the views over peaceful rolling fields. The full-size en-suite shower room and fully equipped kitchen mean there’s everything you need for a quiet, relaxing break.

Cattlestone Farm Sunrise Shepherd Hut

Tillingham, East Sussex

From £165 per night including breakfast, check availability here .

A few miles from the medieval port town of Rye in East Sussex, Tillingham is hidden away in 70 acres of hills, vineyards and woodlands, scattered with wandering pigs, cattle, sheep and chickens. It’s a serene, bucolic setting for the cutting-edge winery, hotel and dining destination. A renovated Victorian farmstead and neighbouring hop barn contain 11 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, tasting room and shop, all replete with hip, upcycled furniture and fittings and dreamy views of the surrounding Sussex countryside.

Tillingham offers daily tours and wine tastings (by appointment only), running to around 90 minutes, at £35pp. Start in the tasting room and move through the rest of the estate, from the modern winery, to the ancient oast house hosting Tillingham’s collection of qvevri (earthenware vessels buried in the ground and used to make orange wine) through to the idyllic rolling vineyards. Our tour guide took a deep-dive into Tillingham’s biodynamic, low-intervention approach to wine-making – wine nerds and aficionados will love the level of detail. You’re also given four generous pours of different wines.

What to eat: Come for lunch, dinner or both. Set over two floors filled with vintage and revamped furniture, exposed beams, sheepskins and sprays of dried flowers and foliage, downstairs is a casual wine bar with a small plates menu and an impressive wine and cocktail list (make a beeline for the silky fig leaf martini). Upstairs houses a more formal restaurant, where new head chef Brendan Eades (formerly of Silo and the Conduit Club) has created the four-course Garden Menu that showcases Tillingham’s homegrown produce – think veg from its walled garden, meat raised in its pastures and fish caught in nearby Rye. Dishes are simply cooked and presented, yet pack in the flavour – the quality really sings. Highlights on our visit included delicate Dungeness crab with nasturtium; tender, deeply flavoured Tillingham lamb; and a luscious, perfectly set egg tart. If you’re staying over, breakfast also takes place in the restaurant and features a set menu of sourdough with whey butter and homemade jam, granola and yogurt, local charcuterie and cheese.

What to drink: Natural wine fans will love what’s on offer here. Try the delicate Col 21 with its grassy, citrussy tones, or P21 – highly gluggable, vibrant pink fizz with rhubarb and raspberry notes.

Where to stay: The estate’s old hop barn has been converted into 11 bedrooms, all equipped with midcentury furnishings and earthy jewel colours, heavenly scented diffusers, modern art, Roberts Radios, Haeckels toiletries and welcome snacks of fudge and sherry in crystal glasses. We stayed in the expansive feature double room, which comes with a freestanding tub and huge window with sweeping views of the vines and countryside.

A table with wine next to a grand wooden house

Bolney Wine Estate , West Sussex

From £245 per night, check availability at booking.com , tour tickets at Virgin Experience Days (£133.50 for tour, tasting and lunch for 2 .

Nestled in lushly green surrounds on the edge of the South Downs, the Bolney Estate is a long-time fixture on the English wine scene – founders Janet and Rodney Pratt first bought the land in 1972 for wine-making – raking in numerous plaudits over the past five decades. It makes both still and sparkling wines from five vineyards on the site, and there's also a sleek visitor centre complete with café and shop, with plans afoot to expand these facilities next year. Bolney offers a range of vineyard tours and tastings of varying length. We tried the Sussex cheese and wine tasting, which included a tour of the winery and surrounding vineyard, and an accessible yet in-depth guided tasting of Bolney wines paired with delicious Sussex-made cheeses and charcuterie, all of which you can find in the shop (make a beeline for the superb Brighton Blue).

What to eat: The light and spacious Eighteen Acre Café (if it’s sunny and warm, nab a table on the large balcony for gorgeous panoramic vineyard views) serves up generous sharing plates that make the most of Sussex produce, much of it made just a few miles away – think tender local braised pork belly with Hispi cabbage and Bolney Lychgate red wine jus, or umami wild mushroom ragu with cured egg yolk.

What to drink: We loved the floral and elegant Bolney Bubbly as well as the passion fruit and elderflower-laced Lychgate Bacchus. English still red wines are something of a rarity but Bolney’s silky pinot noir, with delicate cherry notes, is an excellent example and well worth trying. Don’t just stop at wine, Bolney also makes its own gin and rosso vermouth.

Where to stay: Nearby in the picture-postcard village of Cuckfield, Ockenden Manor is a beautifully preserved Elizabethan manor house with rooms ranging from grand oak-panelled suites to spacious rooms with four-poster beds and roll-top baths. There’s also a plush fine-dining restaurant and an award-winning modern spa just moments away from the main building.

English Vineyard FAQ’s

What is the difference between a winery and a vineyard.

To define these terms simply, a vineyard is generally defined as a plantation or plot of land designated to producing grapes for wine, whilst a winery is the building housing the wine production process. One may exist without the other, with many wineries known to purchase grapes from ‘outside’ or unassociated vineyards.

Chet Valley Vineyard houses both a vineyard and winery on site, working to produce award-winning wines from vine to bottle in a carefully constructed and refined internal process. Our guests may have the pleasure of discovering both our vineyard and winery during our regular tours and tastings. Discover more about our facilities and spaces on the winery page.

Does England produce wine?

Though England (and the United Kingdom in its entirety) is a large consumer of wine, it has previously been known as a minor producer, primarily due to its overarching cooler climate. Despite this previous perception, English wine is a growing sector, with many well-established vineyards across the country, including Chet Valley, Chapel Down, and Three Choirs producing a wide variety of award-winning wines year on year, available for purchase online, on-site, and even in national supermarkets.

Chet Valley, in particular, is placed in an ideal location for grape-growing and wine production, benefitting from some of the warmest and driest summers in the country, alongside a complex and perfectly suited terroir, featuring significant organic content. Combining traditional European techniques with bold infusions, Chet’s winemakers work to mould existing methodologies to the vineyard’s unique climate - resulting in fine, English wine.

Are there vineyards in England?

Though vineyards were once a rarity in England and the United Kingdom, according to WineGB, there are now over 500 working vineyards in the UK, with over half of this selection welcoming visitors in one form or another. Wherever you’re based, from Cumbria to Devon, you’re likely to be near a vineyard producing English wine.

Nestled in the sun-soaked hills of Bergh Apton, South Norfolk, Chet Valley Vineyard delivers both award-winning wines, and an exceptional visitor experience. With a keen focus on quality and sustainability, this well-established location delivers a range of on and off-site visitor activities, including tours, regular events, and virtual tastings.

Are wineries and vineyards the same?

Though vineyards and wineries are not the same, the two facilities often exist on the same site, under the same name, or in connection with each other. To put it simply, a vineyard produces grapes, whilst a winery produces wine.

A vineyard is generally defined as a plantation or plot of land designated to producing grapes for wine, whilst a winery is the building housing the wine production process.

Chet Valley Vineyard houses both a vineyard and winery on site, working to produce award-winning wines from vine to bottle in a carefully constructed and refined internal process. Our guests may have the pleasure of discovering both our vineyard and winery during our regular tours and tastings.

What is the best English vineyard?

Which is the ‘best English vineyard’ generally comes down to a matter of personal preference. With over 500 vineyards in operation across the UK, there’s an offering available for almost everyone, from polished commercial options, to small family businesses. Here at Chet Valley, we like to think that our vineyard offers an option for anyone.

Nestled in the sheltered, sun-soaked fields of Bergh Apton, South Norfolk, Chet Valley’s single estate Vineyard spans over 10 hectares of family-owned land, producing an award-winning range of sparkling and still fine English wine. Our vineyard and winery are family-friendly, and offer a range of popular activities throughout the year, including tours, tastings, harvests, talks, and suppers, alongside the opportunity to rent vines and produce your own wine.

For those unable to attend our activities in South Norfolk, we’ve created a range of safe, virtual offerings, including our virtual wine tasting kits and sessions.

Can you visit vineyards in the UK?

Though vineyard tourism and events, especially in England, are fast growing sectors, proving popular with visitors of all ages, visitor allowances for vineyards in the UK generally come down to decisions made by individual locations. According to WineGB, of the more than 500 operational vineyards in the UK, over half allow visitors in some form.

Vineyards with facilities and activities for visitors, such as Chet Valley Vineyard in Norfolk, often offer on-site tours, tastings, and a variety of open events, such as harvests, talks, and dinners.

What are the best things to do in Norfolk?

Located across the mid-east coast of England, the county of Norfolk enjoys a number of natural and man-made attractions. Featuring wide expanses of countryside, a beautiful coastline, and a national park, alongside historic villages, market towns, and of course the city of Norwich, there’s much to see and do. In addition to more traditional attractions such as Norwich Castle and Cathedral, alongside the city’s numerous theatres, restaurants, and shopping spots, Norfolk offers a range of more naturally inspired and interactive activities and sites, such as Chet Valley Vineyard.

This beautiful, family-friendly site produces many of the nation’s favourite English wines and offers a variety of vineyard tours, tastings, and events (such as the ever-popular annual harvest), alongside accommodation in the form of a converted cottage, placed amongst the vines themselves!

Where is my nearest wine tasting event?

Whether you’re located at the boundaries of the English border, the country’s southernmost sands, there’s bound to be a wine tasting event within reach, though, as a result of the ideal soils and climate, many of the UK’s most well-established and popular vineyards and tasting events are concentrated on or near the South East, including East Anglia.

Popular wine tasting locations within England generally include Kent, East Sussex, Cambridgeshire, Shropshire, Oxfordshire, Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Norfolk, Perthshire, and Yorkshire.

Chet Valley Vineyard, located in the picturesque South Norfolk, are proud to offer both on-site and virtual wine tasting events, allowing wine lovers from across the country to get involved, and experience a guided tasting, led by the site’s head winemaker.

Where is my nearest vineyard?

With over 500 vineyards currently in operation across the UK, there’s bound to be a vineyard within your reach, though, as a result of the ideal soils and climate, many of the UK’s most well-established and popular vineyards and tasting events are concentrated on or near the South East, including East Anglia. When looking for a vineyard to visit, it’s important to do some preliminary research and establish the site’s opening times (they may be seasonal), the activities offered, and, of course, whether or not visitors are accepted.

Chet Valley Vineyard, located in the picturesque South Norfolk, are proud to welcome visitors throughout the year - with most events taking place throughout the main season of April to October. Offering a complete set of activities including tours, tastings, and events (such as the ever-popular annual harvest), alongside a selection of virtual offering for those looking to experience our wine but unable to travel.

Lovely afternoon touring and learning about the vineyards and tasting the wines with locally produced nibbles. John is an excellent host and passes on technical information easily. A delightful way to celebrate a 60th birthday with a family group and even better being able to cycle through beautiful lanes in the sun to get there .

We had a wonderful day at Chet Valley! We hired the venue for a family party and enjoyed food and wine on the balcony overlooking the beautiful vineyard scenery. We particularly enjoyed the Horatio Rose Brut which was very refreshing on a hot summers day. We had an excellent tour of the vineyard with the owner, John who was very knowledgeable about not only the vines and the wine but also the local area and all things nature related. He was also very good with the children in our party. I’d highly recommend Chet Valley Wine and also Chet Valley as a venue to hire.

Don't be deceived by the sunny photo below! A friend and I joined a Chet Valley vineyard tour earlier this year, and despite pandemic restrictions and a torrential downpour that even included hail at one point, John managed to pull off an engaging and fun event. It would appear nothing can dampen his enthusiasm. 😉 Chet Valley has a surprisingly wide range of wines of good quality. So if you are in or around Norfolk - or want an excuse to be - I highly recommend paying them a visit. (Warning: you will probably want to purchase a few bottles too...)

Rathfinny Wine Estate

Tillingham, East Sussex

A farm dating back to the 13th century, Tillingham is surrounded by 70 acres of rolling hills and woodlands with far-reaching views towards Rye and the Romney salt marshes beyond. Ben Walgate’s biodynamic winery is relatively new – the vines he planted gave their first crop in 2020 to produce a variety of wines, including a pinot blanc, pinot noir and chardonnay, as well as a sparkling. Wine tours and tastings run daily and are available by appointment. The lovely accommodation consists of 11 pared-back but stylish rooms in what used to be a hop barn. The wine bar, with its wood-fired pizza oven, is open for lunch, and bar snacks are always available with a glass of wine. For dinner, the chef’s à la carte menu showcases simply cooked ingredients, grown on the farm or sourced from local producers.

Rathfinny Wine Estate, East Sussex

Family owned Rathfinny was established in 2010 and produces one of England’s top sparkling wines. Close to picture-postcard Alfriston in the South Downs, the vineyards occupy a south-facing slope, just three miles from the sea, where the climate, chalk soil and aspect come together to produce award-winning sparklers. Book a tour of the estate to learn how a typical year of growing vines and wine production progresses, as well as taste the wines. Enjoy fine dining in the chic Tasting Room restaurant or opt for something a little cosier and more relaxed in the Flint Barns dining room. On the the western side of the estate, barns have been beautifully restored with contemporary furnishings and house ten lovely en-suite bedrooms.

Denbies Wine Estate, Surrey

One of the UK’s largest producers, the Denbies estate was founded by Sir Adrian White in 1984. Today, it is still run by the White family and has been developed to include a hotel, two restaurants and gift shop. You can book tours of the winery and vineyard, as well as themed dinners with wine tastings. The original farmhouse B&B, built in the 1850s, has recently been transformed and an adjacent wing added to create a chic hotel with 17 contemporary en-suite rooms and a restaurant.

Llanerch Vineyard, Glamorgan

Close to Cardiff, but in the deep countryside, Llanerch is the oldest vineyard in Wales. Renowned for its Cariad wine (unique to the area), it does tours and tastings throughout the year. Follow yours with lunch, afternoon tea or dinner in the restaurant, which serves seasonal dishes made from the best local ingredients. The 26 stylish rooms and suites are divided between a new building – from which you’ll get uninterrupted views of the vines and surrounding fields and hills – and the original farmhouse from where the rooms look out over the Italian-themed courtyard. A couple of the rooms are dog friendly.

Three Choirs, Gloucestershire

Deep in the Cotswolds, this is one of the oldest vineyards in the UK. The first vines were planted in 1973 on half an acre of land to see how they would grow. Today, they stretch across 75 acres. Visitors can enjoy a self-guided walking route or book in for a guided tour and tasting of five still and sparkling wines. For lunch or dinner, the Brasserie serves tapas-inspired dishes to complement the wines. You can spend the night in one of the lodges tucked away further down in the valley – they have floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides with views overlooking tranquil, willow tree-fringed ponds surrounded by vines. Or there are cosy bedrooms next to the restaurant – these have south-facing patios and wonderful views too.

Denbies

Oxney Organic Estate, East Sussex

Close to Rye, Oxney’s 35 acres of vines produce around 20% of all organic grapes grown in the UK. They are used to make still and sparkling wines in a converted Grade II-listed square oast house. Tours are held on Saturdays from May to September and you’re guaranteed to get an enlightening intro to the English organic wine revolution – a member of the team will take you round the vineyard and the winery, talking you through the perils of growing grapes in a cooler climate and the organic methods they use to overcome them. At the end, you’ll sample four wines. If you want to stay on, you’ve got options: a spacious converted barn, the historic Vineyard House or a cosy shepherd’s hut.

Chiltern Valley Winery & Brewery, Oxfordshire

This is one of the most charming vineyards in the UK. Just over an hour from London, near Henley-on-Thames, the vineyard sits on the Chiltern Hills, surrounded by a vast woodland and Hambleden Valley, where the climate is ideal for growing grapes. Head here for a two-hour behind-the-scenes tour on which you can try wines, ales and liqueurs. For an overnight stay, you can choose from rooms at the B&B with views of the vineyard, orchard, gardens or the 17th-century barn.

Tinwood Estate, West Sussex

Tinwood is near Chichester, in the heart of West Sussex at the foot of the South Downs National Park. Since first planting in 2007, it has established a reputation for producing some excellent sparkling wines, both white and rosé. On a tour, you’ll visit the vineyard and enjoy a tasting that includes three glasses. You can then stick around to order another glass, or bottle, as well as cheese and nibbles. Stay in one of three luxe wooden lodges that take advantage of the lovely views over the vines towards the setting sun. There’s no restaurant here, but there are a few very good pubs close by.

Ryedale Vineyards, North Yorkshire

Ryedale is one of the most northerly commercial vineyards in the UK. A family run business at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, it’s a few miles from the town of Malton and close to York and Castle Howard. In addition to red, white, rosé and sparkling wines, Ryedale produces cider from the estate’s orchards. Tours and tastings in groups of around 20 are available from April to October – one of the two wine makers will guide you around the vines. There are two cosy en-suite rooms in the farmhouse and you’ll be treated to a full Yorkshire breakfast in the morning. There are two good pubs nearby and, as Malton is the ‘food capital’ of North Yorkshire, lots of good places to eat.

Castlewood Vineyard, Devon

On the Devon-Dorset border in the village of Musbury, the Corbett family have transformed a south-facing hillside on their farm into a thriving vineyard that produces an excellent sparkling wine. By appointment, you can book a private tour and tasting for groups of six or more with the owner – he’ll walk you through the vineyards and tell you all about growing grapes in east Devon, while enjoying breathtaking views across the Axe Valley to the sea in the distance. There are two traditional Grade II-listed stone cottages that date from the 18th century that sleep six. Set in spacious gardens, both are packed with character and retain many original features like inglenook fireplaces, beamed ceilings and window seats.

Jabajak, Carmarthenshire

Once a droving farm, Jabajak’s seven acres of grounds are in a quiet spot on the edge of west Wales’s Bluestone mountains. They produced their first harvest in 2014 and there are now daily tastings of the white and sparkling rosé, along with self-guided tours of the vineyard. Converted from the drovers’ old stone buildings, the restaurant serves dishes using ingredients from the estate’s kitchen garden and local producers. Book the Nook and enjoy a private table for two on a balcony in the eaves. There are eight en-suite rooms, all different in style – we love the Grainstore Suite, a truly romantic hideaway in the eaves.

7 Dreamy Vineyards with Accommodation in Tuscany

Sean Finelli Last Updated: February 7, 2023

Want to have a true Tuscan experience? Then, you’ll want to eat, sleep, and drink wine in a vineyard in the rolling hills of Tuscany. The only question is, where should you stay? Whether you want to taste the best wine or be close to Florence, there’s a place for you. I’ve put together a list of the dreamiest vineyards with accommodation in Tuscany.

Pro Tip: Planning to visit the wine regions of Tuscany? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you need it. Check out our guide to Tuscany for more planning resources, our best Florence and Tuscany tours for a memorable trip, and how to plan a day of wine tasting in Tuscany .

Top Vineyards in Tuscany With Places To Stay

Time spent in the Tuscan countryside and in the vineyards, in particular, is the most relaxing time you can have. The hills roll on endlessly like green waves—except these waves produce arguably the greatest wine on Earth!

If you’re looking for that perfect place to enjoy a few days of living like a Tuscan wine estate owner, this list is for you. Every recommendation on this list is in the countryside. Some might say “Montalcino,” but we’re referring to the surrounding region of Brunello-producing territory, not the city.

There are a few agriturismi that happen to be nestled between vineyards. They’ll give you the feeling of staying on a vineyard but the vast majority are guest houses or hotels on the property. I highly recommend renting a car if you plan to stay at these locations. It’ll make your experience easier and much more memorable.

For anyone interested in exploring Tuscan vineyards and wine, check out our Tuscany wine tours and day trips . They come with a range of options from riding the Tuscan countryside on a Vespa to eating traditional dinners and exploring historic countryside towns.

Capanna Luxury Suites Montalcino

€€€ | Montalcino Countryside | Great Views | Luxury | Pool | Restaurant

Capanna is a larger producer of wines in Montalcino that has done very well in the past few decades. With open minds and ambitious goals, they built one of Montalcino’s most luxurious places to rest your head.

It features an epic pool, restaurants, an outdoor deck overlooking wine country, and of course endless reserves of their wine. The price tag is high enough, but every now and then you have to treat yourself!

Fonte de’ Medici at Tignanello

vineyard tours and stays

€€ | Tignanello/Chianti Classico | Pool | Restaurant | Spa | Cooking Classes

If you’re into Italian wines, you may have heard of Tignanello. It’s what is referred to as a Super-Tuscan wine produced by a single vineyard, Villa Antinori, on a single estate, Tenuta Tignanello. Why is it so important? You’ll have to taste it to find out.

Just on the edge of the estate is a privately-owned property known as Fonte de’ Medici, which is a sort of borgo. A borgo was a small town in Tuscany where everyone working the same land basically lived together.

This hotel is built from a borgo, which is not uncommon for the area. The rooms are set in restored houses around the borgo. It has a beautiful town square, chapel, and other more hotel-like amenities like a swimming pool and tennis courts. You’ll have to rent a car to here, but it’s worth it for lovers of Tignanello or wine country in general. They also have very fun cooking classes!

Il Borgo by Castello Banfi

Il Borgo by Castello Banfi Montalcino

€€€€ | Montalcino Countryside | 5 Star | Brunello Wine | Michelin Dining | Epic Pool

Castello Banfi is an institution of winemaking. They are by far the largest producer of Brunello wines on the planet as they own the most territory. Their grounds are absolutely immaculate and their structure is beautiful.

A famous line of cypress trees lines their kilometer-or-so-long driveway up to their estate. It’s one of the most elegant estates I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting in all my travels.

They even have a luxury cluster of mini-apartments on-site and a Michelin-star restaurant. The pool overlooks seemingly endless rolling hills completely covered in vineyards and olive trees. You’ll pay tooth and nail for your night’s stay, but it’s arguably one of the nicest hotels on Earth.

Borgo Casa al Vento

pool at sunset at borgo casa al vento tuscany

€€ | Chianti | 90 mins From Florence | Great Views | Lots of Activities | Restaurant

Borgo Casa al Vento is more of a retreat than a place to stay. When you go there, you’ll likely stay on the estate the entire time. They have lots to do including archery, tennis, a pool, and more. This is a place of indulgence—quite literally, you can have a wine bath!

The structure is a renovated borgo with a very European feeling. It’s a great place to spend a few days, especially for families. Your kids can run around while you enjoy the scenery. The rooms are very charming and rustic. Many have fireplaces and there are common areas to build fires and enjoy a Tuscan evening.

The on-site restaurant is dedicated to the “rediscovery of taste,” so you can expect delicious Chianti cuisine made with local ingredients including their Sangiovese wine.

Le Chiuse Montalcino

€ | Montalcino Countryside | Winery With Long History | Rustic Apartments | Pool

Le Chiuse is one of my favorite vineyards in all of Montalcino. The estate is quaint and rustic. You can rent an apartment for around €100 per night and pay in cash upon arrival. The apartments mostly have two bedrooms, but you can see the details on their website.

If you want to warm up by the fire in a rustic apartment with scenic views on a secluded estate this location is perfect. You will need a rental car to get here. It’s great for serious wine connoisseurs and minimalists who want to dedicate as much of their budget towards wine purchases as possible. The tasting room is one to be reckoned with and the structure is family run.

FLORENCE Top 17 Things to Do…Vespa ride, Pisa and more!

Villa Medicea di Lilliano

Medici Villa di Lilliano Tuscany Accommodation

€€ | Tuscany | 25 mins From Florence | Incredible Estate | Cooking Classes

Set in the Chianti countryside just outside Florence, this property is incredibly cool to visit and a treat for all. It’s the perfect place to stay if you want to visit Florence for an afternoon or two but stay in the countryside. It’s close enough to Florence to reach by taxi, making it an excellent choice for anyone who wants the Tuscany countryside vibe without renting a car.

The accommodation will feel like a luxurious home away from home with elegant homey touches throughout. As a favorite destination wedding venue, you know this place is stunning. They also have fun cooking classes! For wine lovers, this wine estate and the family who run it have a long history. This is the place to enjoy a bit of the Tuscan lifestyle.

Casanova di Neri Relias Hotel

vineyard tours and stays

€€€ | Montalcino Countryside | Top Wine Producer | Pool | Spa

Casanova di Neri is one of Montalcino’s premier wine producers and one of my personal favorites. If there’s an epic year for Montalcino, this producer will normally receive some “best of the best” awards from the main wine critics. Producing great wine is a science and an art at the same time and their vineyard reflects that.

The property sits in the valley below the city of Montalcino and is perfectly curated in all its beauty. They have multiple large structures including a castle-like hotel, an enoteca for wine tastings, and all the equipment needed to make great wine.

The rooms are minimally decorated and elegant. There’s a pool on-site with views to die for and plenty of space to relax. You will need a car to get here, but that’s part of why it’s a dreamy vineyard.

Where to Stay in Bordeaux Wine Country – Vineyard Accommodations on the Right Bank (with a Map)

Picture of Polina

I have been working as a Bordeaux wine tour guide for some time and have visited hundreds of Bordeaux wineries.

If you are planning to stay at a vineyard near Bordeaux, h ere is my list of the best accommodations at Bordeaux wineries with a focus on quiet, authentic places with great wine. There are various options between cottages, hotel rooms, independent apartments at a winery, and luxury accommodations.

Keep in mind that some châteaux may have a restaurant on-site, while others don’t. In that case, you will need a car to move around.  There is no Uber in the Saint-Émilion wine country, so having a rental car would be optimal.

Best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

As a newly minted resident of Portugal , I am here to tell you, every single square inch of it is beautiful. But there's something extra special about the Douro Valley.

Located in the northern region of Portugal, the Douro Valley is as enchanting a place as they come. Its rolling hills — punctuated by perfectly aligned vineyard vines, which are a testament to the agricultural dedication of local farmers dating back thousands of years — give away to winding river views that go on for as far as the eye can see. In the summer, the word "verdant" doesn't do the greenery justice, and come fall, the dazzling foliage takes over.

"The Douro Valley is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, steeped in centuries of winemaking history," Madalena Dinis, director of marketing and communication for the Porto and northern Portugal tourism board, told Travel + Leisure . "Notably, the Douro is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, which adds a historical richness to its vineyards and winemaking traditions. It’s a haven for wine enthusiasts and a perfect place for anyone seeking a serene escape in nature. The region’s rich culinary traditions and the warmth of its people make it an inviting destination for all."

Ready to see it for yourself? Here are the best places to stay, attractions to see, and vineyards to visit on your next trip to Douro Valley.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Don't miss the fantastic views from around the riverbanks, especially at sunset.
  • Indulge in all the wonderful spa treatments offered in the Douro Valley hotels.
  • Book a table at one of the hotel restaurants for a taste of delicious regional Portuguese cuisine.
  • The easiest way to explore the area's fantastic history is by taking a ride on its Historical Train.
  • Taste the fruit of the valley during a wine tasting at any of the area's vineyards. None of them will disappoint.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Courtesy of Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas

Six Senses Douro Valley

The Six Senses was voted one of the best resorts in Portugal and Spain by T+L readers in the 2023 World's Best Awards, and it's easy to see why. The 19th-century manor-turned-hotel sits amid the terraced vineyards and offers spacious suites for you to call home. Here, guests can also indulge in spa treatments, walk the organic gardens, dig into locally sourced meals, and yes, enjoy plenty of wine tastings, too.

Lamego Hotel & Life

Lamego Hotel & Life is tailor-made for those seeking a more modern experience. The property's contemporary design, which includes a clean-lined pool surrounded by neutral-toned chaise loungers, provides the utmost relaxing atmosphere. Guests here can also swim in the indoor pool on chillier days, get a treatment at the L'Occitane spa, and indulge in traditional Portuguese cuisine at the restaurant, O Comendador. The hotel is also within walking distance of regional cultural landmarks, including Lamego Cathedral and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies.

Quinta de la Rosa

Perched on a bend in the Douro River, Quinta de la Rosa offers a family-style stay so guests can feel immersed in the destination. Calling it a "hotel" is a bit of a misnomer, as the rooms are sprinkled all over the property, giving everyone a sense of solitude during their stay. When ready for a meal, guests are invited to Cozinha da Clara (or Clara's Kitchen) for a regionally inspired meal.

Vidago Palace

A few nights at Vidago Palace , a historic hotel set in a centuries-old forest, is bound to make you feel like royalty. The palace was the vision of King Carlos, who wanted to build a luxury spa to entice a global clientele — and he succeeded. Here, visitors will find opulence at every turn, from the grand staircase in the entryway to the manicured gardens, rooms with leather furnishings, and a thermal spa that will undoubtedly undo all your aches and pains.

Best Things to Do

Octavio Passos/Getty Images

Drink in the view at São Salvador do Mundo.

While the Douro Valley is beautiful from every angle, the São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint allows visitors to take in all of its splendor at once. Located high on the riverbank, this vantage point offers a sweeping view of the water and terraced vineyards. Plus, it's a prime spot for admiring the sunset. There's also a tiny chapel at the top, along with pre-Roman remains.

Get to know the land at Côa Valley Archaeological Park.

The Côa Valley Archaeological Park , located about a one-hour drive from the heart of the Douro region, offers a glimpse into not just Portugal's past, but into humanity's. The museum and open-air gallery are home to an extensive collection of Paleolithic rock carvings, some dating as far back as 30,000 years ago. The museum itself is a sight to behold, made out of a natural-colored cement that blends seamlessly into the landscape. But don't stop there — continue on to explore the park via a guided tour so you don't miss a thing.

Take a boat tour.

Get a whole new perspective of the valley during a boat tour down the river. There are several local operators offering tours, from quick river trips to multiday cruises. For something even more unique, Anima Durius hosts trips on super-cool small vessels, including classic wooden boats and a few handsome sailboats.

Hop aboard the Historical Train.

Travel back in time with a ride on Douro's Historical Train . The trip, which runs between Régua and Tua, hugs the banks of the river, providing beautiful videos from the five historical carriages. Passengers can also expect entertainment and even a few little gifts on board.

Quinta do Seixo

Quinta do Seixo , located along the banks of the river, goes on for nearly 250 acres. The winery is well-known for its modern winemaking center that pairs perfectly with its traditional vineyard farming. Guests can come for a tour and tasting led by one of the vineyard's experts.

Quinta da Pacheca

Quinta da Pacheca has been producing wine since 1738, making it one of the Douro's oldest estates. Here, guests can opt for the traditional tastings, book a picnic lunch or dinner to enjoy among the vines, or visit in the fall to experience the olive oil harvest. As for where to stay, you can book one of the vineyard's massive wine barrels turned glamping sites , which have become popular thanks to Instagram.

Quinta das Carvalhas

Quinta das Carvalhas is younger than Quinta da Pacheca, but not by much. It began producing wines in 1759 and has been a prominent vineyard in the region ever since. Here, guests can go on guided tours, which include climbing the hillside landscape for a 360-degree view of the Douro Valley and learning all about the history of viticulture along the way.

The best time to visit the Douro Valley, according to locals, is really whenever you'd like.  "Whether you prefer the vibrant colors of spring, the bustling atmosphere of harvest season, or the serene tranquility of winter, there's never a wrong time to visit the Douro Valley, Richard Bowden, the director of marketing and communications at the Six Senses Douro Valley, shared with T+L.  "Each season offers its own distinct charm and allure for travelers." While he has a hard time picking a favorite, Bowden notes the grape harvest season, which runs from September to October, "is a particularly vibrant time to visit, as the vineyards are ablaze with autumn colors, and many wineries offer special events and experiences."

If you had to choose, the most optimal time to visit is usually between late spring and early autumn (May to September), when the days are sunny, long, and warm. All that adds up to lovely days made for hiking, wine tasting, or cruising down the river. However, if you want to stretch your trip into late October, you'll catch the olive harvest season, too.

By Car: Driving is the easiest way to reach and explore the Douro Valley. From Porto, it's about a 1.5- to two-hour drive via the A4 motorway and N222 road. With this drive, it really is about the journey and the destination, as the N222 road is often regarded as one of the most beautiful drives in the world thanks to its green hillsides and plenty of viewpoints. From Lisbon, you can make it to the Douro Valley in about 3.5 hours. It's not as glamorous of a drive, but it will get you there.

By Train: For a more relaxing alternative, try the train. The Linha do Douro (Douro Line) runs from Porto’s São Bento or Campanhã stations to Pocinho, passing through Régua, Pinhão, and Tua along the way. It, too, is known for its picturesque landscapes en route, including right along the river's edge, making it a pleasant journey.

By Car: Again, it's easiest to bring your own car when visiting the Douro Valley, as things are quite spread out. This way, you can see all the sights in your own time. Travelers can rent a car from either Porto or Lisbon; companies like Avis, Hertz, and Alamo all have stations in each city.

Tour Guide: If you're not comfortable driving on the narrow, winding roads, you can hire a private tour guide. There are plenty of local (and knowledgeable) guides ready to whisk you away to all their favorite spots, including some off-the-beaten-path gems.

The familiar wines you can expect to see from the region include Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Super Tuscans and Vino Nobile , among others.

White varieties include Vermentino, Malvasia, Trebbiano,  Chardonnay ,  Pinot Grigio , Moscato and Vernaccia . You’ll also find a dessert wine called Vin Santo made from white grape varieties Trebbiano and Malvasia, that is classically paired with cantucci biscuits made for dipping.

In this wine travel guide we break down the region into sectors highlighting different vineyards and what they’re known for to help curate a thoughtful and worthwhile trip to Tuscany. While many wineries are located within the Chianti region, we can assure you that the reach of Tuscan vineyards goes far beyond producing world-class wines you may not even be aware of.

Begin at the Beginning

The region of Tuscany is so vast and with the immeasurable number of vineyards and properties to visit the thought of creating an itinerary can quickly become overwhelming. What’s best is to begin with an idea of what type of experience you’d like to have and work within that theme.

Are you looking for all organic and sustainable wineries? Are you looking for tastings for large groups with food and wine pairings? Does a day tour in the region seem more up your alley? One crucial thing to decide is how you want to travel. If it’s on your own, you’ll need a car to get to and from . If you’re looking for a driver, a tour may be the best overall option. And finally, a combination of the two— on your own adventures sprinkled in with a few specific tours—may provide you with the best experience.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tuscany Wineries

Where are most wineries in tuscany.

When you think about wine country in Italy, Tuscany is likely one of the first places that comes to mind. This is where rolling hills and sun-drenched vineyards meet historic charm, and the wine…oh, the wine! The heart of Tuscany’s wine production is found in Chianti , nestled between Florence and Siena. This region is world-renowned, known for producing the namesake Chianti and Chianti Classico wines that have graced countless dinner tables across the globe. However, the wine wonders of Tuscany don’t stop at Chianti. If you venture south of Siena, you’ll find the region of Montalcino . Montalcino is the proud home of the Brunello di Montalcino wine, widely considered one of Italy’s very best. Nearby Montalcino, there’s another wine gem – Montepulciano . This charming, ancient town gives its name to Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, another esteemed wine with a centuries-old reputation. Let’s also not forget about Bolgheri , a coastal Tuscan region in the west. It’s a relative newcomer in Tuscan wine production, but it’s already made a significant impact. Bolgheri is famous for its Bordeaux-style reds, which includes the legendary Super Tuscan wine, Sassicaia. And last but not least, Maremma , Tuscany’s wild west, has also been gaining recognition for its wines. This beautiful, rustic region, stretching along the coastline and into the hills, has become a hotspot for wine lovers seeking something a little different.

What are some examples of the best wineries to visit in Tuscany?

If you’re looking to embark on a Tuscan wine adventure, there are some standout wineries that offer the perfect blend of breathtaking landscapes, historical intrigue, and, of course, exquisite wines. In the heart of Chianti, between Florence and Siena, you’ll find Antinori nel Chianti Classico. This modern and architecturally stunning winery is run by the Antinori family, who have been making wine for an astounding 26 generations. Here, you can taste the fruits of their centuries-old expertise, learn about the winemaking process, and dine at their exquisite restaurant overlooking the vineyards. Then, venture south to the Montalcino region, where the renowned Biondi-Santi winery awaits. This is the birthplace of Brunello di Montalcino, a wine that has been called the ‘Italian ambassador in the world of wine’. The Biondi-Santi family pioneered the Brunello style in the late 19th century, and a visit here is like stepping back in time, offering deep insights into wine history. Over in Montepulciano, the Avignonesi winery offers an exceptional experience. Known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, this winery is dedicated to biodynamic farming practices, creating wines that express the purest form of its terroir. A visit here includes not only wine tasting but also a fascinating glimpse into sustainable winemaking. In the coastal region of Bolgheri, don’t miss out on the Tenuta San Guido estate, where the legendary Sassicaia wine was born. This ‘Super Tuscan’ has broken the rules and set new standards for Italian wine, and visiting this winery is truly an opportunity to taste history. For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, head over to Maremma and visit Le Mortelle, owned by the Antinori family. It’s a relatively young winery, but with its cutting-edge technology and focus on local grape varieties, it’s already making waves in the wine world. These are just a few examples of the many incredible wineries that Tuscany has to offer. Be sure to read our detailed guide to the best wineries in Tuscany, which also includes dozens of options to actually stay on some of the stunning vineyards themselves. Each visit promises not only great wine but also an intimate connection with the land, the people, and the centuries-old traditions that make Tuscan wine so special. Whether you’re a wine novice or an aficionado, the Tuscan wineries are sure to make your journey unforgettable.

Can I visit wineries for wine tasting in Tuscany?

There’s no better way to truly appreciate Tuscan wine than by visiting the vineyards themselves, where you can immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes that produce these world-renowned wines. Wine travel is a major industry in Tuscany, with many vineyards opening their doors to visitors for tours and tastings. Imagine walking through the vine-covered hills of Chianti, exploring the ancient cellars where the wines mature, and then sipping a glass of Chianti Classico while overlooking the very vines that produced it. Or picture yourself in Montalcino, tasting a world-class Brunello while learning about the meticulous process that goes into crafting every bottle. Visiting the vineyards of Montepulciano offers a journey through history, as this town has been producing wines since the Roman times. And don’t forget Bolgheri, where you can taste the famous Sassicaia, often considered one of the best Italian wines. Many wineries in Maremma also welcome visitors, offering a more rustic, off-the-beaten-path wine experience that still boasts fantastic wines. A trip to these wineries not only provides an opportunity to taste a wide range of wines but also to learn about the winemaking process, the local terroir, and the history of wine in Tuscany. So yes, you can absolutely visit wineries for wine tasting in Tuscany, and it’s an experience I highly recommend for any wine lover. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or a newbie, the vineyards of Tuscany are sure to leave you with unforgettable memories and a greater appreciation for the art of winemaking.

What is a quinta and why should you stay at one?

A quinta, in the context of the Douro Valley region, is a traditional Portuguese estate that typically includes a vineyard, winery, and often a charming guesthouse. These quintas are steeped in history, and a stay at one offers a unique opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Imagine waking up to the sound of the river gently flowing by and the smell of fresh grapevines in the air. The warm sun rises over the hills, casting a golden light on the terraced vineyards as you sip your morning coffee. This is the magical experience that awaits you at a quinta in the Douro Valley.

But a quinta is much more than just a place to stay – it’s an immersive experience.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be transported back in time, to a world of elegant country living, surrounded by rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. The quintas offer an intimate, personalised experience that is simply unmatched by larger, more impersonal hotels.

Staying at a quinta allows you to truly immerse yourself in the Douro Valley’s wine culture. You’ll have the opportunity to tour the vineyards, taste the wines, and learn about the winemaking process firsthand from the passionate and knowledgeable local winemakers.

In addition to the wine-related activities, many quintas offer a range of other amenities, such as swimming pools, gardens, and hiking trails, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

Overall, a stay at a Douro Valley quinta is an experience that should not be missed. It’s a chance to connect with the land, the wine, and the people of this beautiful region, and to create memories that will last a lifetime.

How to choose where to stay in douro valley – some guiding principles.

When it comes to choosing the perfect place to stay in Douro Valley, there are a few considerations that are worth keeping in mind.

Location | Firstly, do you want to be close to a town, where you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of local life, or do you prefer something more secluded and intimate?

Transport | Another important factor to consider is transportation. How will you be getting to and around the Douro Valley? Some quintas offer shuttle services or private transfers, while others may require you to rent a car or take a taxi.

The wine | Of course, one of the most important things to consider when choosing a quinta to stay at is the wine.

Check out the wine produced by the quinta and decide whether you want to try port wine, table wine or both. Find out what type of wine the quinta is renowned for and what wine tasting options are available.

Dining | Finally, if you are planning to stay in a more remote location, it’s important to consider dining facilities. Some quintas may offer their own restaurants or partner with nearby establishments, while others may require you to make your own arrangements.

By keeping these considerations in mind, you can narrow down your options and find the perfect quinta for your Douro Valley adventure.

A note on location

The Douro Valley is a magnificent wine region, and it’s crucial to understand its layout to explore it fully. The valley is divided into three sub-regions, each with its unique characteristics, from soil to grape varieties.

The westernmost is Baixo Corgo , with its largest towns including Peso da Régua, Lamego, and Vila Real.

Cima Corgo is the heart of the Douro Valley, and its largest town, Pinhão, is the real centre point of the region. It’s here that the majority of the famous wine estates are found, and wine villages like Tabuaço and Provesende are also part of this sub-region.

The Douro Superior is the most undiscovered of the three sub-regions, and it is the furthest away from Porto. Its main town is Vila Nova de Foz Côa, and it is characterized by its wild and remote beauty.

Each sub-region is a treasure trove of breathtaking vistas and exceptional wines, making it worth exploring each one of them.

Cultured Voyages Review:

The hotel is located on the Quinta da Pacheca estate, with tours of the cellars running regularly, making it easy to combine a tasting of the estate’s renowned wines with your stay. Its location close to Regua is also a particular draw, making it very easy to reach from Porto via car or train. This boutique quinta was designed by a famous French architect and its unique touches are to be seen throughout the property, which offers a truly exceptional experience for its guests (me included).

Dinner itself is a hearty affair, with a set menu each evening, while a tasty snack menu is available during the day.

I particularly enjoyed the wine tour and tasting with sommelier Tanya, lasting for two hours, which is more comprehensive than most, and offered insights into all of the production areas. The wine produced is also of exceptional quality, making this a truly wonderful property to stay at.
