The best time to cruise to the Caribbean

When is the best time to cruise to the Caribbean? The easy answer is whenever it suits you. There's never a bad time to cruise to this giant blue fishbowl with a bazillion beaches to explore. That's because Caribbean is warm and mostly sunny year-round. You can find hundreds of cruise options every single month.

That's not to say that every season is the same. If I had to pick based on weather, cost and crowds, I'd vote winter as the best time to cruise the Caribbean.

If I were to narrow it down even further, I'd say the best time to cruise to the Caribbean is early December. It's a fun way to create a break between Thanksgiving and the December holidays. Picture yourself shopping for unique gifts after your snorkel excursion or before your spa appointment instead of slogging through slushy mall parking lots with the tip of your nose threatening to freeze, and I think you'll agree.

Here's how the entire year stacks up so you can identify the best time for your travel party to cruise the Caribbean .

Winter: Moderate fares and quiet crowds (except during the holidays)

Let's start with my favorite time to cruise the Caribbean: winter (December/January/February). The temperatures throughout the region are a couple of degrees cooler than the rest of the year, and the average UV index dips down to 5 or 6 (moderate to high exposure). Rain typically comes in the form of passing afternoon showers, not tropical storms.

Except for the weeks that include holidays , ships aren't likely to be at capacity or filled with screaming children. Fares in winter are a bit below the yearly average (excluding the holiday weeks, which are often the highest of the year). Plus, there are deals available that bring prices down even lower. Look particularly at last-minute options and those first two weeks in December.

Ships that sail seasonally in Alaska and Europe often call the waters of the Caribbean home for a few months in winter. That adds up to more choices during this time of year.

If there are cruise lines or specific ships you would like to try, winter in the Caribbean is an ideal time to test them out — especially luxury and premium lines that often feature lower prices on Caribbean sailings than on their cruises elsewhere in the world. If you prefer childless cruising during the holidays, you can choose an adults-only cruise line like Viking.

The weather at home can be unpredictable in the winter, possibly affecting your departure travel plans and preventing you from reaching your Caribbean cruise. Plus, winter storms in the U.S. can increase wave action in the Atlantic and in the Gulf of Mexico. The farther north your departure port, the more likely you are to experience a rough ride until your ship sails south into calmer water.

While most of the season offers moderate fares, if your cruise dates are limited to holiday breaks, be prepared for prices close to double what you'd pay during the few weeks before that. Book holiday sailings well in advance to find lower fares.

Spring: Near-perfect weather with spring break crowds

If you don't mind spring break crowds, spring is a wonderful time to cruise. The weather in the Caribbean in March, April and May is idyllic, and the seas are likely to be calm. Plus, escaping the last of winter's wrath at home can be just what the doctor ordered to save your sanity.

Prices during the first week of March aren't too high before they edge up throughout the rest of the month. Deals are also possible in early May. If your aim is to cruise with your own children while they are on break, there are plenty of ships with age-appropriate facilities. You'll have options like splash zones for the little ones, monster slides for the adventurers and kids clubs for all ages. Don't forget indoor activities such as laser tag and ice skating.

The spring break rowdies start in March and often continue well into April. Soon after, in mid-May, the graduation parties begin. If your goal is to avoid crowds of kids and partiers, skip the cheapest and shortest cruises, as well as cruise ships with water parks and thrill rides.

Be aware that spring break is high season for travel disruptions caused by peak demand. Airlines may overbook. I was once bumped from a flight home after a spring cruise when a high school Spanish club from Wisconsin needed the seats to travel home together as a group. I was compensated and flew out the next day, but what if I had been bumped on my cruise embarkation day? If you plan a springtime Caribbean cruise, have a backup plan, including travel insurance, in case your travel itinerary gets rearranged at the last minute.

Summer: Fewer storms, many families and prices that may beat land-based trips

Summer cruising in the Caribbean is ideal for lovers of sun, sea and sand looking for a fun escape with their kids or grandchildren while school is out. June, July and August temperatures average near 90 degrees throughout the region. While there's a possibility of tropical storms or hurricanes, the Atlantic hurricane season doesn't peak until late August through October.

These are the months when you rarely need to worry about weather shutting down onboard water attractions or causing cancellations of your in-port fun. Summer months are also perfect for multi-generational cruising, as they are often the only months when everyone's schedules align. And when you have a group to manage, you need as many activities as possible to keep everyone entertained. Summer cruises in the Caribbean make that easy with plenty of options, both on board and in port.

Cruise fares are higher overall in summer than in the other three seasons. Ships sail at or near capacity. Even the ports themselves will likely be crowded. Shops and attractions will overflow with passengers from other ships and land-based vacationers.

You'll also need to plan for mosquitos in port and for serious sun protection. Most of the Caribbean averages a UV index of 7 (considered a high risk) during the summer months, holding at a high or extremely high level for long stretches of the day.

Despite high fares, summer cruise pricing and crowd levels stack up favorably against most land-based vacations. Once you factor in the included meals, entertainment and activities on a cruise, then consider traffic congestion, long lines and skyrocketing hotel costs associated with other vacation options like theme parks and even popular national parks, a summer Caribbean cruise with the family can seem downright affordable and less anxiety-filled.

Fall: Low prices, low occupancy, risky weather

Fall, especially September and early October, is not a bad time to cruise to the Caribbean – unless you are a worrier or someone who can't go with the flow when travel plans go awry. That's because the autumn months are the peak season for hurricanes and tropical storms. When it isn't stormy, it might still be a bit warm and sticky for some early in the season. Temperatures remain near the 90-degree range well into October.

The weather isn't all bad in the fall and Caribbean cruises prices are low during these months. I've been on lovely cruises in the Caribbean in September and October with calm seas and uncrowded, quiet ships, all at a fraction of the price of cruises just a handful of weeks earlier in the year. If saving money and avoiding the spring and summer crowds is your aim, and you are the kind of cruiser who will sing in a rowboat in the rain if it gets you away from home, then fall is perfect for you.

Weather happens -- and in the Caribbean, it happens a lot in September and October. Even if a hurricane doesn't cause you grief, rain might. A few years ago, I cruised the Western Caribbean near the end of October and it poured the whole time. I had no idea it could rain that hard in Cozumel, a desert island. And Grand Cayman? That's where I learned the meaning of the word "torrential." Even with all that rain, it wasn't a bad cruise. The rain didn't interfere with my scuba diving plans.

November feels like a bonus cruise month. The temperatures have dropped a few degrees from summer's heat and the chance of storms has mostly passed. Extra ships begin arriving for their winter season and prices remain low for most of the month. Back home, everyone else is busy buying turkeys and cranberries and catering to the in-laws. You, however, could be lounging on deck sipping a frozen tropical concoction while waiting for your samba class to start.

Bottom line

Now we're back where we started – with you booking a Caribbean cruise that works for you and your travel group. Each season has something to offer someone, which is what makes this whole year-round Caribbean cruise thing work. If we all thought early December was truly the best time to cruise to the Caribbean, it would cease to be so.

Western Caribbean Cruise Weather: Best Times to Go

The best times to take a western Caribbean cruise are usually late spring to early summer.

Western Caribbean cruise weather is mild in the spring, hot in the summer and rainy in the fall.

The western Caribbean is made up of a small number of islands such as Cozumel, Jamaica, Roatan off Honduras and the Cayman Islands.

It also includes the Central American countries that face the Caribbean Sea, especially Panama, Belize and Costa Rica.

Most western Caribbean cruises include some combination of the above destinations.

Western Caribbean Temperatures

Most destinations have average high temperatures each month ranging from the mid-80s Fahrenheit in the winter to the high 80s and even low 90s in the summer.

Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Cozumel and Panama have average high temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months. They are the warmest of the western Caribbean cruise destinations.

Belize and Costa Rica are not as warm in part because of the cooler rain forests and mountainous areas.

Average low temperatures for the region range from the mid 60s to the low 70s Fahrenheit in the winter to the mid 70s and sometimes higher in the summer.

Keep in mind that low air temperatures also mean low seawater temperatures for people who like swimming and sunbathing. The Cayman Islands have the coolest lows of any destination in the region.

Western Caribbean Hurricane Season

The annual western Caribbean hurricane season goes from June 1 to Nov. 30. The months with the most storms and hurricanes—usually two to four per month—are August, September and October. Most destinations have the highest rainfall in September and October.

Total rain can go as high as eight to 10 inches in a single month for places such as Cozumel, a popular cruise port of call. Costa Rica often has much more, but much of it falls inland rather than on the coast. Note that inland excursions such as the country’s popular zip lining have a high chance of rain.

Grand Cayman and Jamaica also have high amounts of rain historically from August through October, but not as much as Cozumel, Belize, Panama and Costa Rica.

Best Months to Go

The safest months for western Caribbean cruise weather are in the spring and summer for their combination of warm temperatures and relatively low amounts of rain.

The riskiest months are December through February because of cool temperatures and September and October because of heavy rain. However, the risky months also tend to have lower prices for cruises.

Even when forecasts call for rain, the rainfall may be brief and intense rather than long and steady. The forecast may call for rain when choosing a last-minute cruise, but the weather may still be good overall.

While the Caribbean is eternally popular for travelers looking to escape the snow and hail of the winter months up north, the fall is also a great time to visit—if you can manage to avoid the hurricanes. September is the height of hurricane season in the Caribbean, so travelers should strongly consider also buying travel insurance ahead of any September trip. If you luck out, you can enjoy the shoulder season's cheaper hotel rates and airfares without missing out on the warm waters and cool breezes the islands are loved for.

Hurricane Season in the Caribbean

Hurricane season in the Caribbean hits its peak in September, and while the odds of your vacation being affected by a tropical storm or hurricane are greatest during this month, the overall danger is relatively small. For example, the National Hurricane Center states that while September travelers to Puerto Rico have an 8 percent chance of encountering a hurricane, it only applies if you spend the entire month there. So, if you only stay one week, the odds of a hurricane hitting are just 2 percent, even during the peak of storm season.

September Weather in the Caribbean

September temperatures typically range from about 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 88 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius), and the summer humidity is still lingering.

On average, there are approximately 12 rainy days during September, although precipitation and temperatures will vary slightly, but not significantly, across islands.

What to Pack

Since the temperatures will feel like summer, it's best to pack loose-fitting, breathable layers will keep you cool during the day, especially on islands where the climate is more tropical and humidity can be an issue. Don’t forget a swimsuit, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. It would also be wise to pack some rain gear, considering the weather can be unpredictable and some dressier clothes, just in case you go out to an upscale restaurant.

September Events in the Caribbean

From fiestas in Aruba to Carnival in Belize, and sand sculpture competitions in Bermuda, there are plenty of events to keep travelers engaged in the local culture and community while traveling in the Caribbean. Many of these events may be canceled during 2020, so be sure to check the official organizers' websites for the latest updates.

• Fiesta di Cunucu : This annual tradition in Aruba celebrates the rural heritage of Aruba, with folkloric dance and music at traditional Cunucu houses.
• Belize Independence Day : On September 21, Belize celebrates the anniversary of the day it gained independence from Great Britain in 1981.
• Belize Carnival : Since 1975, the annual Carnival is held in September in Belize to showcase local music, theatre, fashion, and dance.
• Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition : Witness artists from all over the world build unbelievable sand structures in Horseshoe Bay Beach in Bermuda. The annual competition was started in 1996 by the Institute of Bermuda Architects.

• While reduced crowds are a plus for many travelers, resorts may feel a bit deserted this time of year, and you may find that not every attraction will be open. Be sure to research any activities and attractions in advance to confirm they will be open.
• Keep your eye out for special packages and vacation deals that are more likely to be available at this time of year.
• Some islands are less likely to find themselves in a path of a hurricane, especially if they are further south. Islands like Aruba , Bonaire , and Curacao may be a safer bet if you hope to travel to the islands in September.

To help you choose which world cruise is right for you, U.S. News has compiled a list of some of the best sailings that are available to book for 2025. Keep in mind: If you're interested in a world cruise that is fully booked, you shouldn't lose hope. When trips are booked this far in advance, there are usually some cancellations; you may be able to get on a waitlist through a travel adviser or by contacting the cruise line directly. Otherwise, if you're ready to book your tickets and set sail on the trip of a lifetime, consider one of these 11 upcoming world voyages. Viking Ocean Cruises: Viking World Voyage I

Dates: Dec. 19, 2024, to June 17, 2025

Duration: 180 days

Starting rate: $85,995 per person (Deluxe Veranda Stateroom, double occupancy)

Viking Ocean Cruises' epic 180-day voyage on Viking Sky departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2024 and ends in New York in June 2025. The cruise is nearly sold out, including the least expensive Veranda Stateroom at $79,995 per person. Guests will visit 37 countries on six continents and have 83 guided tours in far-flung locales, from the South Pacific to Asia to the Middle East. Cruisers will also have overnights in some of the world's most fascinating cities, including London, Istanbul and Singapore.

This world cruise includes Viking 's mostly all-inclusive amenities. Fares cover all meals; wine, beer and soda at lunch and dinner; one complimentary excursion in every port; free Wi-Fi access; access to the spa and fitness center; enrichment lectures and destination performances; and other amenities. The line also runs world cruise promotions that may cover free business airfare and transfers, shore credits, shipboard credits, a beverage package and other perks.

A shorter, 138-day segment of the world cruise is also available. This voyage has the same departure date and port as the 180-day option, but guests will disembark on May 6, 2025, in London. This cruise includes ports of call in 28 countries and 57 guided tours. The lowest fare is $59,995 per person (double occupancy) for a Veranda Stateroom.

Holland America Line: 124-Day Grand World Voyage

In January 2025, Holland America Line will sail simultaneous world cruises of longer than 120 days for the first time in the line's history: this 124-day sailing and a 133-day "Pole-to-Pole" Grand World Voyage. The shorter 124-Day Grand World Voyage sails round-trip from Fort Lauderdale.

The extensive itinerary on the 1,964-passenger Zuiderdam features 32 countries and 10 overnight stays, as well as bucket list destinations like Machu Picchu, Easter Island and the Great Barrier Reef. The voyage includes a Panama Canal transit and stops in exotic destinations such as several islands in French Polynesia. Travelers will also visit ports of call in Australia, Asian countries like Indonesia and Sri Lanka, African destinations such as Madagascar and Tanzania, places in Western Europe like Italy and France, and many others. After traveling to so many incredible destinations on this itinerary, the ship crosses the Atlantic Ocean and returns to Florida.

Holland America's 133-day grand voyage is believed to be the first-ever pole-to-pole round-trip sailing from the U.S. The voyage aboard the 1,432-passenger Volendam will sail from Fort Lauderdale to the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Costa Rica before transiting the Panama Canal. Other ports of call in South America include Ecuador, Peru and Chile, where guests will get to experience scenic cruising in the Chilean fjords. The journey also offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to cross the infamous Drake Passage and see the surreal beauty of Antarctica.

After a stop in the Falkland Islands, the ship will return to South America with calls in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. After several ports of call in Africa and the Canary Islands, Volendam sails to Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The ship will then navigate the waterways in Northern Europe, the North Cape, Iceland, Greenland and Canada, before sailing along the East Coast of the U.S. toward Florida.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full itineraries for world cruises typically last anywhere from around 100 to 180 days, though Royal Caribbean International 's Serenade of the Seas is currently sailing the longest world cruise at 274 days. If you're not able to set sail for three to five months (or longer), some cruise lines also offer select, shorter segments of their full world cruise itineraries or grand voyages, which are typically two to three months in length.

World cruise fares can vary significantly between cruise lines. Some lines advertise cruise-only fares, which do not include meals at specialty restaurants, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excursions, some entertainment, or other expenses. On top of that, many cruise lines' base prices exclude port fees and taxes. Given the length of a world cruise, even small expenses can add up after several months on the ship and in ports around the globe. Typically, travelers can expect to spend a base fare of about $15,000 for an inside cabin and as much as $90,000 (or more) for luxury accommodations and an all-inclusive fare.

If you're considering sailing beyond 2025, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced its 140-night 2027 world cruise, World of Splendor, sailing from Miami to New York. The voyage embarks on Jan. 11, 2027, aboard Seven Seas Splendor , and prices start at $91,499 per person. If you want to reserve the over-the-top Regent Suite, you'll need to budget an unheard-of $1.7 million for two guests ($839,999 per person, to be exact).

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

M odern cruise ships continue to grow in size, with the biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , launching at the start of this year, and her sister ship the Star of the Seas expected to surpass her in size.

Both of these ships are operated by Royal Caribbean International, which operates five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world. Carnival Corporation, arguably the biggest cruise company in the world, features three times on the list through its subsidiaries P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises.

All of the heaviest cruise ships in the world were built within the last 20 years, although the majority – six of the ten – were built within the last five years.

So, here are the top ten biggest cruise ships in the world, by gross tonnage. 

10. P&O Cruises MS Arvia : 185,581 gross tonnes

The MS Arvia is P&O Cruises’ fourth ship to be built by German shipyard Meyer Werft. Weighing in at 185,581 gross tonnes, the 345m (1,130-foot) Arvia is slightly larger than her sister ship, the MS Iona . The 20-deck ship is the largest ship commissioned for the British cruise market and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,264 passengers, with 1,800 crew onboard. 

The ship is the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Excellence-class vessel for P&O, following the Iona . Arvia is powered by a 61,760kW LNG drive system, with a propulsion power of 37 megawatts. The LNG-powered propulsion system allows the vessel to sail at a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

After being floated out in August 2022, the Arvia mainly operates itineraries around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

9. Costa Cruises – Costa Smeralda : 185,010 gross tonnes

The Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered vessel in the Costa Cruises fleet. With a gross tonnage of 185,010gt, the 20-deck Excellence-class ship measures 337m (1,106 feet) in length. The second LNG-powered cruise ship to enter operation in the world, she has a maximum capacity of 6,554 passengers with 1,646 crew and a service speed of 21.5 knots.

Construction of the Costa Smeralda began at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in September 2017. Meyer Turku collaborated with the Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard to develop and integrate the LNG propulsion plant for the ship. She is fitted with four 16-cylinder, Caterpillar MaK 16VM46DF engines, with 15.4 megawatts (20,710 horsepower) output per engine, resulting in a maximum power of  37 megawatts (50,000 horsepower).

The ship, which was named after the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, entered service in December 2019 , departing Savona on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, where it has sailed since.

8. Costa Cruises – Costa Toscana : 186,364 gross tonnes

The Costa Toscana is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda and is also powered by LNG . measuring 337m (1,106 feet) long and weighing in at 186,364 gross tonnes, the Toscana has a maximum capacity of 6,338 passengers and 1,678 staff across her 20 decks.

Like her sister ship, the Toscana was also built at the Meyer shipyard in Finland, with construction completed in 2021. She is also powered by four MaK-Caterpillar engines, with a total power of 57.2 megawatts (76,706 horsepower), and two ABB Azipod motors , resulting in a service speed of 17 knots.

Named in homage to the Tuscany region of Italy, Costa Toscana mainly sails around the Mediterranean Sea but Costa Cruises has also used the ship to sail itineraries further afield, such as around Brazil and the UAE.

7. MSC Cruises – MSC World Europa : 215,863 gross tonnes

The only entry in the top ten from MSC Cruises, MSC World Europa measures 333m (1,094 feet) in length. With 215,863 gross tonnage, she can house more people than any other ship in the MSC fleet: up to 6,762 passengers across 2,633 cabins spread over 22 decks, in addition to 2,138 crew.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the World Europa ’s LNG-power propulsion system was subcontracted to Finland-based Wärtsilä. Five LNG-powered, 14-cylinder Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines power the vessel, with a propulsion power of 44 megawatts ( 59,005 horsepower). She also features nitrogen oxide reduction (NOR) units, two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems, seven thrusters, and two fixed-pitch propellers. 

The MSC World Europa was floated out at the end of 2021 and was initially used as an accommodation vessel for fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the ship berthed at Doha Port in Qatar during the tournament. Following the competition, the ship subsequently travelled several routes around the UAE, before sailing to the Mediterranean, where it has sailed itineraries since.

6. Royal Caribbean International – Allure of the Seas : 225,282 gross tonnes

The first of many entries on this list operated by Royal Caribbean, Allure of the Seas weighs in at 225,282 gross tonnes. Measuring 362m (1,187 feet), she is only 50mm (2 inches) longer than her sister ship the Oasis of the Seas . The Allure has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,200 crew across 18 decks.

Built at the Turku Shipyard in Finland, the Allure took two years to build , floating out in 2010. She features six Wärtsilä 46 diesel engines with a total power output of 97 megawatts (130,053 horsepower). It is propelled by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters. The ship can travel at a cruising speed of 22 knots.

With a homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US, the Allure mainly serves itineraries around the Bahamas but she is scheduled to sail routes around the Mediterranean in 2025.

5. Royal Caribbean International – Oasis of the Seas : 226,838 gross tonnes

The oldest ship on this list, the Oasis of the Seas has been in service for over a decade. She was the biggest cruise ship at the time when floated out in 2009, with a gross tonnage of 226,838gt and a length of 360m (1,181 feet). The Oasis has a maximum capacity of 6,699 passengers and 2,181 staff across 18 decks.

The Oasis took two years to build at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, with the keel laid on 12 November 2007 and the ship arriving at her homeport of Port Everglades in Florida, US, on 13 November 2009.

The Oasis is powered by eight Wärtsilä V12 diesel engines, which generate 5.6 megawatts (7,500 horsepower) each, alongside four bow thrusters. The main propulsion system consists of three 20-megawatt (26,820 horsepower) electric Azipod motors, resulting in a combined propulsion power of 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and a standard cruising speed of 23 knots.

The Oasis mainly operates routes around the Caribbean, but occasionally repositions to offer itineraries in the Mediterranean.

4. Royal Caribbean International – Harmony of the Seas : 226,963 gross tonnes

The third Oasis-class ship built by Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas weighed in bigger than her existing sister ships at launch in 2016, with 226,963 gross tonnage, but she has since been surpassed by newer vessels. With a total length of 362m (1,188 feet), Harmony has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,300 staff across 18 decks.

Royal Caribbean placed an order with STX France for the construction of Harmony of the Seas in December 2012. The first steel for the ship was cut at STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in September 2013, while the keel-laying ceremony was held in May 2014.

The Harmony is powered by three 18.9-megawatt Wärtsilä 16V46 16-cylinder main generator diesel engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46 12-cylinder engines producing 13.9 megawatts each. The propulsion power is provided by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters and manoeuvring is assisted by four 5.5-megawatt Wärtsilä CT 3500 tunnel thrusters. The propulsion system results in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and enables the ship to sail at a standard speed of 23 knots.

Harmony of the Seas embarked on her inaugural seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona, Spain, in June 2016, and currently operates itineraries around the Western Caribbean from her homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US.

3. Royal Caribbean International – Symphony of the Seas : 228,081 gross tonnes

At launch in 2018, the Symphony of the Seas surpassed the Harmony as the biggest cruise ship, weighing in at 228,081 gross tonnes. Measuring 361m (1,185 feet), the Symphony has a maximum capacity of 6,680 passengers and 2,200 staff across 18 decks and was the testing ground for Royal Caribbean's new muster drill . With a total length of 361m (1,185 feet), She is roughly 30 metres (98 feet) longer than the largest military ships , the US Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and the USS Gerald R. Ford .

The keel-laying ceremony for the Symphony of the Seas was held in October 2015 at STX’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in France, and the ship sailed out in June 2017. Royal Caribbean's flagship, Wonder of the Seas is the fifth Oasis-class cruise ship built for the cruise company. Weighing 248,663 gross tonnes and measuring 365 metres (1,1967 feet), the Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world. Christened on 23 January 2024, the Icon has a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew across 20 decks. She is the lead ship of the new Icon-class, with a sister ship the Star of the Seas due to be delivered in 2025 and another ship planned for delivery in 2026.

Built by Meyer Turku in Finland, the Icon is the first ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet that can be powered by LNG. It uses three Wärtsilä 14V46DF and three Wärtsilä 12V46DF for its main generator engines, which provide 67.5 megawatts of energy to run the ship. She is propelled by three 20-megawatt Azipod thrusters as well as five 4.8-megawatt Wärtsilä WTT-45 CP bow thrusters, with a cruising speed of 22 knots.

After sailing her maiden voyage on 27 January 2024, the Icon now sails year-round itineraries of seven-night trips around the Eastern and Western Caribbean from her homeport of Miami, Florida.

The Canadian section of the Pacific Northwest is heralded for its rugged shorelines, charming seaside towns and the dazzling skyscrapers of Vancouver. The region shines during the summer, when the weather is warm and the skies are often blue — and there's no better way to experience the sun-dappled joy than by land and sea.

To get a deeper feel for this part of western Canada, pair your Vancouver cruise with a visit to Banff National Park in Alberta. Canada's oldest national park is located in the scenic Rocky Mountains. Arguably the best time to visit Banff is also the best time to set sail from Vancouver, which makes extending your vacation to include this beautiful gem pretty easy. The drive from Vancouver to Banff takes about 10 hours, but you can break up your sure-to-be-unforgettable road trip with stops at lovely wineries and historic rail towns as you make your way past lush green fields and into the Rockies. Don't have time to spare on a journey by car? You can fly from Vancouver International Airport to Calgary International Airport in less than two hours. From Calgary, it's about an hour-and-a-half drive to Banff.

1. The Lure Of Mild Temps

Summer is both prime time for visiting Banff National Park and  peak Alaska cruise season. Many of these sailings begin in Vancouver , which puts you just a scenic one-day road trip or an easy flight and a quick drive away from Banff. In Banff, you can enjoy crystal-clear glacial lakes, scenic hikes and long bike rides before relaxing at sea. Or celebrate the end of a magnificent journey along the Alaskan coast with cozy cabin visits and endless mountain views.

The best time to visit Banff for comfortable temperatures is mid to late summer. Average July and August highs hover around 73 and 72 degrees, respectively. That's far more comfortable than the 25-degree highs you'll encounter on average in January. Temperatures in Banff tend to stay above freezing until October, and July and August tend to draw vacationers in search of mild conditions, cool breezes and occasional rain showers that provide a moody backdrop for a soak in the historic Banff Upper Hot Springs.

2.Abundant Outdoor Adventures

Banff rolls out the summer welcome mat in June with several events cheering the mountain snow's transition to slush and the thawing of the lakes. This is a town that embraces the changing of the seasons and knows how to make the most of a short — but spectacular — summer.

If you're a hiker or mountain biker, the best time to visit Banff National Park is between June and August. Lower-elevation routes are generally clear of snow by then. Note that at higher elevations, snow may not melt until July. Difficult hikes and multiday treks are ideal for Banff's long August days, before the snow returns around November.

July and August are the best times to visit Banff if you want to see its picturesque blue-green lakes at their most vibrant. This is also the best point in the year for kayaking, boating, canoeing, fly-fishing and paddling.

Lakes in the area begin to freeze in October, around the time cruise season wraps up in Vancouver. Lake Louise and Lake Minnewanka are among those that freeze solid during the wintertime, transforming into ice rinks and winter wonderlands. By the time skiers pack up and the lakes thaw, it's usually May or June.

3. Wondrous Wildflowers And Sumptuous Salmon

For peak wildflowers, the best time to visit Banff is from early July through mid-August before or after your summer cruise. If your schedule is flexible, monitor weather conditions in the area to time your trip for maximum blooms. Warmer winter temperatures may result in earlier blooms, while dry weather can cause seasonal flowers to wilt early. If you're looking for wildflower views without a long bike ride or hike, take a seat on the Banff Gondola and delight in a scenic ride up Sulphur Mountain to a multi-level indoor/outdoor observation deck, where you can admire views of the half-dozen flower-filled mountains that surround you. There may be no better place for a picnic — or at least a coffee in the sunshine — on a summer day.

This is also a good time of year to fish for salmon, trout and grayling. While you can fish year-round in Banff, you'll need to plan your fishing trip for between June and September to fish for the salmon that migrate through these waterways each year. Looking to reel in rainbow trout, brown trout or arctic grayling? The best time of year to visit Banff for these species is between May and October.

4. Small-Town Charm For Days

Banff is a small town that oozes charm. Spend your evenings relishing local takes on cuisine from around the world — you might tuck into biryani one night and Korean fried chicken another. Or opt for sushi, pub food, tacos or vegan chicken and waffles.

Got a sweet tooth? Enjoy a bear-claw pastry while strolling along Banff Avenue, the town's main thoroughfare where you can shop for treasures at one-of-a-kind vintage spots, peruse local art and pick up jewelry made by resident artisans. What's more, you can explore Native history at the fascinating Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum, including a collection of paintings created as an ode to the Rocky Mountains. When you're ready for a rest, visit one of the avenue's bars and sip on gin or whisky distilled with pure glacial water or a refreshing mocktail — and don't leave town without picking up some local fudge and maple syrup.

5. A Colorful End-Of-Summer — And Smaller Crowds

Lots of visitors visit Banff during the warm summer months. Wait until September, toward the end of Vancouver cruise season, for lighter crowds and the chance to experience a unique phenomenon: coniferous larch trees just before shedding their needles. Like leaves , larch tree needles change colors before falling to the earth. From mid-September through late October, they turn a vibrant golden color that makes them appear to glow from within, and the show they put on alone is worth the drive to Banff before or after a cruise to Alaska .
