Dublin welcomes you. Céad Míle Fáilte. The moment you touch down at Dublin airport, your driver-guide and luxury vehicle are waiting to welcome you. Everything is set for an adventure on a grand scale. It’s all organised, and you’ll be accompanied at every stage.

The airport is just a short drive from the city. It’s opportune to enjoy a short orientation tour as you head to your hotel. Your driver-guide will point out many key sites (dependent on traffic). You might spot O’Connell Street and the General Post Office, for example. Maybe the Garden of Remembrance, Custom House. And tomorrow, you’ve got an entire day to see more of Dublin; it’s history and culture.

You’ll spend your first two nights at one of our selected 5-star Dublin hotels The Shelbourne Hotel, The Merrion Hotel, The Westbury Hotel or The College Green Hotel. Your driver-guide will ensure you check in safely and have suitable recommendations for dinner this evening. It’s time to relax now, it’s been a long day.

Dublin City: Your walking tour and time to explore

After breakfast, you’ll be greeted by a local guide in the hotel lobby. This morning we’ve planned a private walking tour, just for your party (tell us about any specific mobility needs or sites of interest).

It’s an interesting and enjoyable tour of central Dublin, touching on both history and local life. You’ll see 13th century Dublin Castle, today a major government centre. In the Dublin Port area, you’ll marvel at the neoclassical architecture of Custom House, originally opened in 1791. And you’ll admire some of the Georgian doors of Dublin. Colourful and decorative, they’ve become part of Dublin’s DNA.

Today we also include a timed visit at Trinity College Library. It’s in the heart of Dublin, down worn, cobbled lanes. And it’s home to the world-famous Book of Kells. Crafted from vellum and ornately decorated, the book dates to the 9th Century. Historically significant, it contains the four Gospels in Latin.

During the afternoon and evening, you’re free to explore the capital as you wish. Your driver-guide can help you plan your time. And if you wish to keep him (and your vehicle) we can arrange this too. There’s lots to discover, including: Kilmainham Jail, The National Gallery, The Irish Immigration Museum, The Guinness Storehouse, and St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Of course, Dublin is excellent for soaking up the vibrant Irish culture and a spot of shopping too. The choice is yours.

14 day ireland tours

Dublin and Cork: Historic Land of Saints and Scholars

This morning, you’ll say farewell to Dublin and head towards Cork – with much interest along the way. From the safety and comfort of your luxury vehicle, you’ll get your first taste of Ireland’s incredible scenery. There’s plenty more to come.

Your first stop will be The Rock of Cashel. Situated on remarkable limestone outcrops within the Golden Vale, this is the spot St Patrick chose to make the head of his church. An intriguing group of medieval fortifications and buildings, it’s extremely significant in Ireland’s history.

You’ll see the 12th century round tower, High Cross and Romanesque Chapel, the 13th century Gothic cathedral, the 15th century castle, and the restored Hall of the Vicars Choral.

As you continue to travel south-west, you’ll stop at Blarney Castle. Have you heard about the legendary Stone of Eloquence? Since 1446, it’s been safely resting in the 600-year-old tower at Blarney Castle. A world landmark in Ireland, the story goes that if you climb the tower and kiss the Stone of Eloquence, you’ll never be lost for words again!

After an enjoyable journey, your driver-guide will take you to Kinsale Harbour, where you’ll check in to Perryville House (or similar) for one night. Dating to 1820, this lovingly restored building now houses a luxurious boutique guest house. You’ll enjoy a deluxe room, with every possible comfort.

Relish an evening in Kinsale. It’s a pretty town with a deserved reputation of being the gourmet capital of Ireland.

Your driver-guide service The job of your driver-guide is to ensure you have a fantastic and interesting experience. Time-served professionals, you’ll soon relax in their company and appreciate their flexible approach and fountain of knowledge. Providing a bespoke service, you’ll feel like you’ve won the lottery!

Safely transporting you for eight hours a day in your private, luxury vehicle, your driver-guide will take an hour for lunch. They’ll manage the daily detail, so you don’t have to. And they’ll enchant you with their stories about Ireland, new and old. You’ll experience the Irish warmth first-hand and discover unseen sights only the locals know. We understand our driver-guides form a very special part of your trip of a lifetime.

14 day ireland tours

Cork to Killarney. The Kingdom Awaits You

It’s on with your journey today. After breakfast, your driver-guide will take you west to join the Wild Atlantic Way – an iconic coastal route you’ll keep returning to over the coming days.

Today, you’ll first head to the pretty village of Kenmare for a spot of lunch. You’ll gaze at scenic splendour this morning. And your driver-guide knows all the best photo-stops. Such unspoilt, natural beauty – it’s hard for a camera to do it justice. Make sure you capture this for your memories too.

On your approach to Killarney, you’ll enjoy some stunning views from The Ring of Kerry. Don’t worry, there’s more to see tomorrow. You’ll travel along the lakes, through Killarney National Park, eventually arriving at the popular town of Killarney.

Nestled on the shores of Lough Leane, Queen Victoria visited here in the 19th Century. With its dramatic mountainous backdrop and immense natural beauty, you’ll appreciate why it’s a favoured destination for many.

You’ll enjoy three nights in Killarney. Staying at one of our preferred hotels, perhaps The Aghadoe Heights Hotel, Where warm Irish hospitality meets modern comfort. With a lakeside deluxe room, this 5-star hotel affords magical views from every corner. It’s such a serene and relaxing place. Yet, just a short hotel shuttle into the heart of town. Alternatively you can choose The town centre, 5 star Killarney Park Hotel where you’ll stay in a premium room. This wonderful 5-star hotel is just a few minutes walk to the pubs and restaurants on the high street.

We can recommend some ideas for dinner tonight or see what tempts you. There are characterful Irish pubs and fine restaurants to choose from in Killarney. You’ll have a wonderful time.

14 day ireland tours

The Ring of Kerry What a day awaits you. Safely accompanied by your driver-guide, you’ll explore The Ring of Kerry today. It’s a circular coastal route forming part of The Wild Atlantic Way in this westerly corner of Ireland.

There’s so much to take in. Have your heart open and your camera charged.

Travelling via the small coastal village of Glenbeigh, you’ll first stop in Killorglin. It’s known for one of the best sandy Atlantic beaches on our small island. A great spot to kick your shoes off, if you fancy.

On you’ll go. So much beauty to see. Dingle Bay is a fabulous place to take it all in. What with towering cliffs and crashing waves falling onto endless sandy beaches. Your driver-guide will find the views that matter most to you.

Cahirciveen is along the route. It’s the birthplace of Daniel O’Connell, Ireland’s Great Liberator. And if you’d like a little extension, some say Skellig Ring is more remarkable than The Ring of Kerry. This additional route winds round to Valentia Island, from where you’ll catch sight of Skellig Island – one for Star Wars fans (it was a key filming location).

Heading up towards the mountains, you’ll then travel through Sneem village and on to Molls Gap. You’ll enjoy scenic glory in all directions as your driver-guide masters this winding mountain pass through the peaks. What a view! Never-ending rugged beauty.

You’ll head back down into Killarney National Park next. If you chose not to discover Skellig Ring, you might have time for Muckross House and Gardens. Or a walk to Torc Waterfall. Alternatively, head back to the hotel and relax in the sheer luxury of this fabulous place.

If you’d like to experience some Irish music and dancing, your driver-guide can take you to The Celtic Steps in Killarney tonight. It’s a memorable family evening. Should something a little quieter be preferred, we can help to arrange that too.

14 day ireland tours

The Dingle Peninsula

On the most western edge of Ireland is Dingle Peninsula. And today, you’ll discover just how incredibly serene it is. Your trusted driver-guide will take charge of the route; you’ll just immerse yourself in this wild and rugged landscape. It’s quite an experience.

According to TripAdvisor, Slea Head Drive is one of the top 100 destinations in the world. And it’s right here on the Dingle Peninsula. National Geographic once called it “the most beautiful place on earth”. We tend to agree.

Slea Head Drive is a circular route that starts and finishes in Dingle town. You’re truly getting away from it all here. Secluded golden beaches, fascinating archaeological sites and weather-beaten landscape is everywhere. All as nature intended.

If you’re a photographer, you’ll welcome the natural light. If you’re looking for peace, there’s nothing better than a barefoot walk on the beach. Just imagine how the Neolithic settlers made this magical land their home in 4,000BC.

When it comes to lunch, Dingle can tempt you with plenty of local seafood. This is one of Ireland’s Gaeltacht regions and Irish is the first language. Your driver-guide is on-hand to help you out. If you’re looking for an authentic, traditional location, Dingle is an ideal choice.

When it’s time to head back to Killarney, you’ll take the Conor Pass to Tralee. A winding mountain pass, the views are magnificent, the scenery so unspoilt. Enjoy the journey as your driver-guide returns you safely to your hotel.

The evening is free to relax and explore Killarney and enjoy any of the great pubs and restaurants.

14 day ireland tours

The Cliffs of Moher and Burren National Park

It’s a prompt start today: we suggest 8.30am. You’ll say goodbye to Killarney and head north; first to Adare. A designated Heritage Town, this pretty village dates to the 9th century. Adorned with thatched cottages and rich in history, you’ll have time to take a stroll and see for yourself.

When you’re ready, The Cliffs of Moher await you. You’re back on The Wild Atlantic Way again. Towering to an incredible 668 feet high and 5 miles long, The Cliffs of Moher are a UNESCO Global Geopark. Their sheer scale puts everything into perspective.

With uninterrupted views across the mighty Atlantic Ocean, you can wander along the cliff tops and catch sight of basking sharks and dolphins below. There are Kittiwakes and Razorbills, not to mention a myriad of wild coastal flowers to admire. Your driver-guide knows the best spots to enjoy.

If you’d like to explore the visitor centre, your entrance fee is included. Alternatively, we can arrange a coastal cruise to take in the cliffs from the water.

During the afternoon, your journey will continue into the Burren Region. Home to Burren National Park, it’s a curious Geosite. You’ll find a limestone landscape that was naturally formed some 300 million years ago. Look out for intriguing mushroom-like structures. You’d be forgiven for thinking they’re manmade. They’re not – they’re all naturally shaped over millions of years.

Should you like to see a sheepdog demonstration, you can stop by Caherconnell Fort and see Irish border collies working the sheep set against the backdrop of an ancient fort.

You’ll also discover Neolithic monuments dating back 6,000 years. It’s an area that’s abundant in archaeological history. And your driver-guide has all the details for you.

Your remarkable drive continues along The Wild Atlantic Way, via Galway, arriving in Cong, County Mayo. For the next two nights, you’ll stay at Ashford Castle Hotel 5-star luxury with an incredible 800-year history behind every door. Once home to the Guinness family, you’ll certainly be impressed by the sheer decadence of this award-winning hotel.

14 day ireland tours

Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey

More striking scenery today as you travel into Connemara National Park with your driver-guide this morning. Rich in natural beauty, you’ll find gleaming lakes tangled with rugged heathlands and striking mountainous backdrops. The Twelve Bens is one to look out for.

The Roundstone Boglands are on your route and you might spot some wild ponies that make this land their home. It’s a wonderful place.

You’ll eventually reach Clifden. It’s such a pretty market town, packed with Irish hospitality, music and arts. Why not take in the atmosphere on foot for a while?

When you’re ready, the sky road is a “must”. It’s a 10-mile circular driving route on the Kingstown peninsula. And it’s yet another fabulous section of The Wild Atlantic Way. You’ll quickly become lost in the coastal splendour and unspoilt landscape as your driver-guide drives you round. And at the highest point – what a view! You don’t want to miss a single moment of this.

During the afternoon, you’ll visit Kylemore Abbey and walled gardens (entrance fees are included). It’s a story of romance and tragedy. Following their honeymoon in Ireland, Mitchell Henry built Kylemore Abbey in 1867 as a gesture of love for his wife, Margaret. Sadly, she died three years after its completion. Today, the 13,000-acre estate is home to the Benedictine nuns. There’s a calm and peaceful spirit at this special place.

As the day draws to a close, your driver-guide will safely return you to Ashford Castle. Another night of luxury awaits you.

14 day ireland tours

To Donegal via Sligo including The Tombs at Carrowmore, Mullaghmore & Ben Bulben.

A day of incredible history, heritage and stunning sights today, you will travel north with your driver/guide to the town of Sligo. We include a stop at Carrowmore, the heart of an ancient ritual landscape which is dominated by the mountain of Knocknarea to the west. There are thirty surviving megalithic tombs most dating back to 4,000 BC, making Carrowmore one of the largest clusters of megalithic tombs in Ireland

The region is also known for its literary heritage, you’ll be able to stop and see the grave of poet, W.B. Yeats.  Time and weather permitting you may also wish to stop to see Mullaghmore Head and the mighty Ben Bulben as the back drop.

And now, County Donegal beckons. We call it God’s County. It topped the National Geographic Cool List in 2017. With good reason.

You’ll be off the beaten track again, surrounded by castles, rugged coastline and mountain peaks. An escape from it all – and the route to Harvey's Point Country Hotel. – home for the next two nights.

This secluded hotel is on the edge of Donegal town offers absolutely stunning suites and incredible hospitality with award winning food in their lovely restaurant.

As an alternate to Harvey's Point we also offer the luxurious 5 star Lough Eske Castle, Not surprisingly, there’s plenty of history to the site, with close links to the O’Donnell Clan. Today, this award-winning hotel is a place of sheer decadence in every sense. You’ll remember your stay here for years to come.

Ben Bulben, Sligo

Exploring Donegal County There’s lots to discover in Donegal County today and you’ll have your driver-guide to help you. Travelling via Killybegs – Ireland’s largest fishing port – you’ll continue along Donegal Bay to Kilcar. This is a gorgeous part of The Wild Atlantic Way. You’re never far from coastal wonder in this part of the country.

You’ll first stop at Slieve League. They’re the highest sea cliffs in Europe at almost 2,000 feet. Standing on what could be the edge of the world, you’ll feel the might of this landscape, the Atlantic Ocean swirling far below your feet. Take some time to drink in the astonishing views from such height. Feel at one with nature.

When you’re ready, you’ll next head to Glencolmcille. It’s a pretty little village, sitting firmly in a Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) area. Ask your driver-guide to teach you a few phrases on the way. You’ll enjoy a memorable experience if you do.

And so, your tour of Donegal County continues. The tiny, traditional town of Adara is next. Look out for Loughros Point and its stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean.

If you’d like to experience a hand-weaving demonstration, we can organise that for you today. You’ll also stop at a real Irish pub for a genuine pint of the black stuff or a glass of Bushmills, if you prefer. And there’s locally caught seafood when you’re feeling hungry.

Returning to Lough Eske Castle after a fabulous day, you’ll want to relax and indulge in the many luxuries this evening.

14 day ireland tours

Derry and Belfast

This morning, your driver-guide will take you to Derry (also known as Londonderry). The second largest city in Northern Ireland, it’s completely walled with seven gates. A complex history dates back some 1,500 years, whilst the city boasts a vibrant and modern culture today.

You’ll experience an award-winning walking tour of Derry, learning more about the Bogside, The Bloody Sunday Story and The Peoples’ Gallery. It’s an insightful tour that also stops at many vantage points across the city’s architecture.

Back in your luxury vehicle, you’ll next travel to Belfast – a city that needs little introduction. Your driver-guide will complete a tour with you, highlighting the historic architecture and social history of Belfast. You’ll also tour the political districts with your driver-guide and see murals created by both loyalist and republican communities. Learn about both sides of this troubled and testing history. Lunch in the city will showcase its lively atmosphere today. Then it’s on to the Titanic Visitor Centre.

Birthplace of the world-famous Titanic ship, Belfast’s maritime heritage is clear. The visitor centre was opened in 2012 and we include entrance into it. You’ll discover nine interactive galleries, many special effects, and full-scale reconstructions. Wander through the shipyard and learn about the skills that built the Titanic. And imagine the horror and despair of the disastrous outcome.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll check in to at the Merchant Hotel for a two-night stay. This is certainly one of Belfast’s finest 5-star hotels. Located in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter, it couldn’t be more convenient. A Grade A listed building with an art deco inspired wing, it’s a truly remarkable building, with gorgeous décor and bespoke furnishings inside.

14 day ireland tours

The Glens of Antrim and the Giant's Causeway Today, you’ll travel north through the glorious Glens of Antrim. It’s a striking landscape that covers 80 miles of rugged cliffs and nine different glens (deep valleys), each with a distinct, historical name. Some sites were used for the filming of Game of Thrones and if you’d like, your driver-guide will point them out.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is your next destination. The Giant’s Causeway. There are over 40,000 hexagonal basalt pillars stacked vertically together. It almost looks manufactured, and yet, it was the work of a volcanic eruption – 60 million years ago.

Legend would tell another story. Ask your driver-guide about the fight between two giants: Fionn mac Cumhaill and big Scot, Benandonner.

There’s more information at the visitor centre and their audio tour is very interesting. Make some time to admire this natural creation from many vantage points too. Many consider The Giant’s Causeway to be the eighth wonder of the world. We think you’ll see why.

This area of Northern Ireland is also home to the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery at Bushmills. The town is well worth a visit and you might choose to partake in a wee dram whilst you’re there.

You’ll also see the cliff-top ruins of Dunluce Castle. Dating to 1513 in written records, this medieval fortification is accessible by bridge, due to the steep, rocky drops on all sides.

Once your day’s tour is complete, you’ll head back to luxury at The Merchant Hotel for your second night in central Belfast. If you want dining or entertainment recommendations, just ask your friendly driver-guide.

14 day ireland tours

Newgrange and the Boyne Valley

This morning, you’ll bid farewell to Belfast and travel south, in the company of your driver-guide. First stop is Brú na Bóinne (Boyne valley tombs) visitor centre. It’s a significant UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Boyne.

The historic location preserves over 90 Neolithic monuments – and the largest collection of megalithic art in Western Europe.

You’ll enjoy a guided tour of Newgrange. A 5,200-year-old passage tomb, it was built by Stone Age farmers. 85 metres (93 yards) in diameter and 13.5 metres (15 yards) high, it covers an area of almost one acre. The passage and chamber align with the rising sun at Winter Solstice. And your tour will recreate this event for you. Can you imagine how this felt in Neolithic times? It’s an incredible place to experience first-hand.

When you’re ready, you’ll continue your journey south, arriving in Dublin again. You’ll check in to the Shelbourne Hotel (or similar) for an ultimate night, ahead of your journey home. Finish your shopping or visit a final highlight in the city. Then relish a memorable last dinner together. For this trip, anyway.

Linda, United States

Scenic ireland, september 2022, excellent tour.

Chris, our Nordic Visitor Travel Consultant, was very responsive to every email that I sent and answered any questions that I had. We had 4 in our group and it was simple to have 2 single rooms and 1 double and add days at the beginning and the end of our trip just from their website. A welcome package was waiting for us at our first hotel that included detailed information about our trip and a map with highlighted roads and points of interest along the way. Our accommodation ranged from small boutique hotels to resort hotels. Each was close to the city centre and excellent! Breakfast was included each morning which made it easy to get going. It was nice to have our accommodation and car secured for us so we only worried about where we were going to explore each day! We highly recommend Nordic Visitor and will definitely use them in the future!

Vivienne, Australia

Wild atlantic way at leisure, august 2022, very enjoyable itinerary.

We were very happy that a really good map of Ireland was provided, which had our hotels highlighted, with the dates annotated, and our route and recommended places of interest also highlighted. Most hotels were centrally located and we had some lovely accommodation. The "Wild Atlantic Way" itinerary was really enjoyable, we were directed to some marvellous places & have some great memories. Our bound copy of the guide, together with the Touring Map of Ireland, are great mementoes of a wonderful holiday.

Judy, United States

Classic scotland & ireland, august 2022, everything felt very personal.

Nordic Visitor was great. Having a personal tour organiser made everything feel very personal, like we had a close associate looking after us. Every T was crossed and every I was dotted with the organisation by Nordic Visitor. Every one of the places we stayed in was beyond expectations. The boutique hotel in Dublin was amazing. My favourite was the Inn in Inverness and the lovely innkeeper Gail. The breakfasts were delicious. Loved our little hybrid car in Scotland. Everyone was so friendly. I called the 24 hour number once and was promptly helped with my inquiry. Good job Nordic Visitor and Chris!

Debra, United States

Grand tour of scotland & ireland, september 2022, highly recommend.

This is the second time we have used Nordic Visitor and we were as pleased this time as we were on the trip we booked with them in Iceland. I would recommend them highly!

Martin, United States

Complete ireland, october 2022, flawless experience.

Our travel consultant Rebecca was fabulous. She accommodated us in modifying our schedule at no charge after my wife's mother's death. She cheerfully changed our Dublin hotel to a more central location and always responded quickly to any questions or concerns. We are planning a Scotland trip in 2023 again using Nordic Visitor and hope to have Rebecca again. In 2021 we used Nordic Visitor for a 2-week driving Iceland trip that was also flawless.

William, United States

Grand tour of scotland & ireland, august 2022, unforgettable experience.

Communication via email and telephone was very good. Everyone at Nordic Visitor was helpful. Tour package was clear with good suggestions for activities and restaurants. Accommodation was beautiful and comfortable. Driving through Scotland & Ireland was unforgettable.

Janis, United States

Grand tour of ireland, september 2022, excellent in giving us guidance through the planning stage.

We were independent travellers and used Nordic Visitor only for car rental and booking hotels in the areas we wanted to visit. Nordic Visitor was excellent in giving us guidance through the planning stage and we felt very comfortable knowing they had our back if we ran into trouble! The information packet was extremely helpful as it clearly gave us options to consider during the trip along with the Heritage Card pass. We personally booked a couple of tours just so we could stop driving and sit back and enjoy the scenery. Great job!

David, United States

Wonderful tour.

Our tour was the "Grand Tour of Ireland" which Nordic Visitor customised for us to include additional nights in places such as Achill Island (our favorite spot!). The highlighted map and other travel materials we received from Nordic Visitor were extremely helpful. Overall we had a wonderful tour!

Stephanie, United States

Ireland east to west, march 2023, a great experience.

Overall, we had a great experience. Anytime we had questions our advisor did a great job answering them in a timely manner. In country, we only had to call customer service one time, when the accommodation had misplaced our welcome packet. The agent on call worked with the hotel and they found it and she called back to confirm that we had everything we needed.

Laura, United States

Complete scotland & ireland, september 2022, overall we had a wonderful time.

We had a great experience, had to call a few times to clarify issues and we were always able to talk with a real person. We received our info about 3 weeks before leaving. I felt we needed more time to review all the info since it was a 17-day trip. Overall we had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this company.

Genevieve, Canada

Classic scotland & ireland, september 2022, everything was set up for us.

The tour was very pleasant since every aspect was already taken care of. Rental cars, accommodation, day tours, airport transfers - we appreciated having everything already set up for us, thank you.

Candice, United States

Classic scotland & ireland, october 2022, a trip of a lifetime.

Chris and the team were wonderful and beyond accommodating. My daughter and I contracted Covid the original day we were to leave the United States. Nordic Visitor was incredible! They cancelled everything and worked closely with us to reschedule. And the service didn't end there. Once on the trip, if I had any questions they were right there to help us. I highly recommend Nordic Visitor. The itinerary provided to us mapped out the highlights of the area we were in, but we were still able to make any detours if we saw something we might want to visit. This was a "trip of a lifetime" for me and Nordic Visitor certainly helped to make it possible. Chris listened to what I wanted and guided me in the right direction.

Terri, United Kingdom

Wonders of ireland, september 2022.

Absolutely excellent tour bus driver!

Kenneth, Canada

Ultimate tour of scotland & ireland, september 2022, extremely satisfied with all aspects of the tour.

Extremely satisfied with all aspects of the tour. Very professional and thorough. The maps and guide book were invaluable and made the tour very easy to navigate. Locations of accommodation were superb, all near restaurants, attractions and shopping.

Gabrielle, United States

Responsive and helpful staff.

Nordic Visitor staff was responsive and provided helpful, detailed information (even before we chose our tour). Their correspondence to our enquiries was one of the reasons why we decided to go with Nordic Visitor when we made our final decision. It was very helpful to have our accommodation, rental cars and airport transportation services pre-arranged.

Getting to Ireland

Ireland has 10 airports, with the three main international ports being: Dublin, Cork and Shannon. Unless customised to begin elsewhere, all Nordic Visitor tours in Ireland start and end in Dublin, the capital city.

Flight times to Ireland are, for example, 6 hours from New York City or Boston and 1.5 hours from London. Major international airlines with flights to Ireland include (but are not limited to) Aer Lingus, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United Airlines, Ryanair, and KLM.

The Republic of Ireland is on GMT time. If your journey involves one or more connecting flights, or if you're crossing several time zones to get here, your dedicated Nordic Visitor travel consultant can add extra nights in Dublin to your package so you can rest up after arrival.

Please note that your flights to Ireland are not included in Nordic Visitor packages. However, if you have booked a combination tour of Scotland and Ireland, we include flight costs between the two countries in the package price.

Castle Tours

Countryside & nature, culture & history, irish heritage, best sellers, scotland and ireland, what to see on a 14-day tour of ireland.

There is so much you can see and do on a 14-day self-drive Ireland adventure. Immerse yourself in the landscapes and historical landmarks of this Celtic country. Explore lively Irish cities and charming countryside as you take in the culture, history and beauty of the Emerald Isle.

With 14 days you have plenty of time to drive around Ireland in a full loop. Travel from Dublin into Northern Ireland to discover highlights such as Belfast, the Antrim Coast and the Giant’s Causeway. Drive down the Wild Atlantic Way route and visit charming Irish towns, countryside and coastal sights.

Of course, the journey is just as important as the destination when you’re on a road trip. In Ireland you can expect scenic drives and plenty of attractions to stop at along the way.

Imagine yourself wandering through ancient Celtic monuments, going for a walk on the green hills, and learning about Gaelic culture. You could sit in a typical pub tasting the local brew and listening to live Irish music.

Read our recommended itinerary below for more inspiration and great trip ideas.

  • Browse our Ireland self-drive itineraries when you’re ready to plan your ideal tour to the Emerald Isle

Here’s our suggestion for a 14-day self-drive itinerary in Ireland:

Day 1 - Arrival in Ireland After touching down at Dublin Airport, a private driver will take you to your hotel in the capital, largest city and international hub of Ireland. If you arrive earlier in the day, you can spend the afternoon at your leisure, exploring the city and its many attractions.

Dublin is a heady combination of heritage sites, fun museums, green parks, historic pubs and lively entertainment. To immerse yourself fully into this buzzing city, we recommend taking a stroll along the cobbled streets of the Temple Bar district or along the characterful O’Connell Street.

Fans of history, books and collegiate atmosphere will want to visit the historic Trinity College and see the ancient Book of Kells.

There are plenty of fun activities you could also add to your itinerary should you have the time. Enjoy an afternoon tea in a double decker vintage bus as you sightsee around the city. Or you could grab a pint at the Guinness Storehouse for a taste of their world-famous beer.

Spend the night in the Dublin area.

Day 2 - Historical sites en route to Northern Ireland This morning you start your road trip around Ireland. Drive north from Dublin and head to Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland.

Along the way you could make stops at some fascinating historical sites. Visit the 12th-century Malahide Castle, home to gorgeous gardens. Continue to the megalithic passage tombs of Newgrange, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s thought to be older than the Egyptian pyramids.

You’ll also have time to see the high crosses of Monasterboice before you cross the border into Northern Ireland.

Spend the night in the Belfast area.

Day 3 - At leisure in Belfast Take the full day to discover the capital of Northern Ireland. Belfast is an exciting city which you can easily explore on foot. We recommend you to pop into some cafés or restaurants to experience the up-and-coming food scene.

Visit the Titanic Belfast museum to learn all about the famous “unsinkable” ship, which was built here in 1909. Take a walk to see the murals splayed on the Peace Walls, which once divided the Protestant and Catholic communities during “The Troubles”.

You could also admire the impressive City Hall building in the heart of Belfast. Or travel just outside the city to visit the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.

Day 4 - The Antrim Coast and Giant’s Causeway Leave the city behind and make for the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland. If you loved Game of Thrones, you’ll want to stop at the Dark Hedges. This striking avenue is lined with twisting beech trees and served as a backdrop in the hit TV series.

Take a stroll along the coast at Carrick-a-Rede and enjoy views of the craggy cliffs. Then continue to the Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s most unmissable attraction. Admire the basalt columns of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, lapped by the Atlantic Ocean’s waters.

Cross back into Ireland to reach County Donegal, stopping at the Bushmills Distillery and Dunluce Castle on the way.

Spend the night in the Donegal area.

Day 5 - The Wild Atlantic Way Prepare to witness more breathtaking Irish scenery today as you begin the Wild Atlantic Way driving route.

Marvel at the mountains, lakes and forests of Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal. Drive over the Glengesh Pass and enjoy sweeping valley views. Make a stop at Glencolumbkille Folk Village, a living-history museum that shows you what life was like in rural Ireland over the centuries.

You can end the day looking out over Slieve League, huge cliffs that rise up to 600 metres (nearly 2,000 feet) from the Atlantic Ocean.

Spend another night in the Donegal area.

Day 6 - Highlights of the Sligo coast Continue your journey by heading south to County Sligo. You’ll see the unmistakable shape of the flat-topped Ben Bulben mountain ahead of you. Make a stop at Mullaghmore to explore the village and sandy beaches, with the table mountain in the background.

Next you could visit the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery to encounter 5,000 years of history. We also recommend a stop at Downpatrick Head for a stroll atop the sea cliffs, providing you with stunning views of the coast.

Spend the night in the Westport area.

Day 7 - Connemara National Park to Galway Make your way through the striking Connemara National Park. Here you’ll find a mixture of landscapes from mountains to white sand beaches, tranquil lakes and heathlands. You could spend some time exploring the fjord of Killary harbour before visiting Kylemore Abbey and its Victorian Walled Garden.

Then, arrive in Galway city and find out why it is famous for being a cultural hub in Europe. Taste delicious seafood from the Atlantic Ocean and perhaps check out the lively pub scene.

Spend the night in the Galway area.

  • Not sure when to book your 14-day Ireland itinerary? Browse our guide to the best time to visit Ireland

Day 8 - The Cliffs of Moher Today you’ll see some of Ireland’s most famous landscapes. But first, start the day at Dunguaire Castle. It is one of the most photographed castles in Ireland  thanks to its location along the Galway Bay. You’ll then drive through the spectacular and lunar-like Burren.

In the afternoon, take in the majestic beauty of the Cliffs of Moher, Ireland’s top tourist attraction. You can’t help but marvel at these dramatic coastal cliffs, towering 214 metres (702 feet) above the sea.

Spend the night in the Doolin area.

Day 9 - Into Killarney National Park Begin the day with a visit to Bunratty Castle, thought to have originated as a Viking trading post in 970 A.D. Then, if time allows, take a look around Bunratty Folk Park, adjacent to the castle. Here you can see what life was like in rural Ireland 100 years ago, with its reconstruction of a typical Irish village.

Afterwards, take in the highlights of Killarney National Park. This includes the picturesque Torc Waterfall and the lakeside Ross Castle and Muckross House. You could enjoy an optional boat tour on Lough Leane, or a ride in a traditional horse-drawn carriage in the national park.

Spend the night in the Killarney area.

Day 10 - Around the Ring of Kerry You have all day to explore the scenic Ring of Kerry, a magical drive through the Irish countryside and along the coast of the Iveragh peninsula. It is part of the larger Wild Atlantic Way and is a must-do for most visitors.

We recommend going counter-clockwise and stopping at the Kells Bay House and its gardens as your first visit of the day. You could then stop by the ancient stone forts of Caherdaniel and Staigue as well as stroll along Derrynane Bay.

Along the way you could also take an optional boat tour from the coast to see the Skellig Islands from up close. These otherworldly islands were recently featured in the Star Wars movies.

Spend another night in the Killarney area.

Day 11 - A taste of the south coast Drive south from Killarney, over the winding Caha Pass, to reach the charming little village of Glengarriff on the Beara Peninsula. Here you could spot a local seal colony on a boat trip to Garnish Island.

Continue directly to the city of Cork or stop at the most southerly point in Ireland, Mizen Head, on the way. You could make a quick detour to Kinsale, a small town on the south coast. With its pretty harbour, 18th-century houses and leafy hills, it’s certainly worth a visit.

Take the rest of the day to explore Cork, Ireland’s “second city”. Soak up the buzzing vibe in cafés and restaurants, explore the River Lee’s waterways, and wander through 17th-century alleys.

Spend the night in the Cork area.

Day 12 - Medieval castles Today you’ll head east to Kilkenny, but we suggest you break up the journey by stopping at some top Irish attractions.

One of them is the famous Blarney Castle. It is legendary in fact as the castle and its history is surrounded in myths and tales. Don’t miss out on kissing the Blarney Stone, which supposedly gives you the gift of eloquence.

Later, discover the spectacular Rock of Cashel, which is home to an important collection of medieval buildings that span over 1,000 years of history.

You’ll also have time to check out the castle and other landmarks in Kilkenny town.

Spend the night in the Kilkenny area.

Day 13 - Through the Wicklow Mountains Today you head back to Dublin. You could drive directly there, but to take advantage of your last full day in Ireland, we highly recommend passing through the Wicklow Mountains.

A natural haven awaits you here in this beautiful national park. You’ll see glacial valleys, glassy lakes and soaring mountains, with the chance to spot local wildlife too. Visit Glendalough – “the valley of the two lakes” – to discover a round tower, stone churches and ancient crosses that date back centuries.

Spend your last night in Dublin, where you can top up your Irish adventure with one last delicious dinner.

Day 14 - Departure Today you fly home from your Irish holiday. If you have time, visit some of Dublin’s museums. Or take a final stroll along the River Liffey or in one of the beautiful parks of the city. You could even extend your tour to spend more days in Dublin.

When is the best time to visit Ireland?

Ireland is a beautiful country all year long. This means you can’t go wrong when you book your 14-day Irish getaway. That said, we recommend the summertime or its shoulder months for the best experience.

The summer, consisting of the months of June, July and August, is the high season. It is marked by long daylight hours and the best (and most stable) weather of the year. Attractions also operate under longer hours and more availability than in winter.

All of this means you can discover Ireland to your heart’s content.

However, you may find that top attractions are very popular at this time. Indeed, Ireland attracts visitors from around the world, especially in summer.

If you would rather have a quieter holiday, visit during the spring or autumn. These shoulder months include April, May, September and October. During this time, you’ll find the best of both worlds: quieter attractions but plenty of good weather and daylight to explore.

Are you interested in exploring Scotland too?

You could combine a tour of Ireland with a road trip around Scotland for an epic Celtic itinerary. With 14 days you could spend a week in each country, allowing you to dive into the Scottish and Irish cultures.

Spend the first week driving around the rugged Highlands and islands of Scotland. Then follow that up with another road trip around Ireland to take in all the jaw-dropping coastal landscapes and historic landmarks.

Scotland is a great destination to complement a tour to Ireland. Their cultures and history are so closely linked and you’ll be able to meet the locals and get immersed in both.

Derry’s Walls, Ireland

Derry is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name Derry comes from the Irish name Daire or Doire meaning “oak forest”. The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which runs through the city to the sea. The city extends along both banks of the river and also extends to rural areas to the southeast. Derry is an historic city and there’s plenty to see and do. Derry’s 17th Century City Walls and the Guildhall are a must see. The historical murals of the Bogside depict the history of ‘The Troubles’ and are another great attraction. The late great poet Seamus Heaney was a native of Derry. Derry City will be a memorable visit and it is great to get some last minute gifts (remember you will need sterling for Derry and Northern Ireland).

The history of the recent period known as ‘The Troubles’ is depicted on the many famous wall murals throughout the city and are a great photo opportunity. Belfast is nowadays seen as a lively and hip city with a great nightlife. The nearby Giant’s Causeway is one of Ireland’s top attractions and when you visit it you will see why. 99+ Free Ireland Self Drive Tours (All Done For You)

By Author Keith O'Hara

Posted on Last updated: August 21, 2023

99+ Free Ireland Self Drive Tours (All Done For You)

We spent 8 months and €16,000 creating the world’s largest collection of free Ireland self drive tours.

Why? Well, planning an Ireland itinerary can be stressful – especially if you don’t know the lay of the land.

So, we’ve done  all the hard work for you ! Each of our self driving tours of Ireland:

  • Can be filtered by length, how fast you like to travel + more
  • Have been meticulously planned
  • Have hour-by-hour itineraries
  • Follow logical and scenic routes

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows about our Ireland self drive tours

driving tours of ireland

WAIT – please take 10 seconds to read the points below before you scroll. It’ll help when it comes to browsing our Ireland self drive tours:

1. They cover every possible angle

We’ve tried to cover every possible want or need with our itineraries. Below, you’ll be able to pick a free driving tour of Ireland based on:

  • Trip length : From 2 to 28 days
  • Start point : All major ferry terminals and airports in Ireland
  • How fast you like to travel : Fast or slow
  • Your fitness level:  High fitness or medium-to-low fitness

2. Our free self drive tours vs what other companies charge for

There are countless companies that charge for creating self guided tours of Ireland. You’ll generally pay them a hefty fee and they’ll customise a trip based on your likes and dislikes. Some also help you book hotels along with renting a car in Ireland .

We  don’t do any of this . We’ve simply created an extensive library of  detailed  road trip itineraries that we  definitely could charge for – but we don’t.

3. Jump to the tour length you want

Right – time to get stuck in! The easiest way to browse our self drive Ireland tours is to select how much time you have and work from there. Select a trip length below:

3 day driving tours of Ireland

3 day ireland self drive tours

3 days in Ireland is a  tiny  chunk of time so you need to be careful – it’s easy to end up trying to do way too much.

With this trip length, the danger is that you’ll end up with a packed schedule, and most of your time will be spent in the car.

The best Ireland self drive tours for 3 days is one that uses a central base and that sees you explore around you on day trips.

4 day Ireland self drive itineraries

4 day self drive tours of ireland

Those of you with 4 days in Ireland have the ability to explore a corner of Ireland in depth.

However, a word of caution – if you have the ability to choose  when to visit Ireland , try and visit during spring or summer.

These seasons have the advantage of long and mostly bright days, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore.

These shorter road trips can be tricky to map out at times so, when it comes to planning a trip to Ireland with only 4 days to work with, take your time.

The best Ireland self drive tours for 4 days is one that uses 1 – 2 ‘bases’ max and that explores a specific corner of Ireland, e.g. Kerry and West Cork.

5 day self driving tours of Ireland

ireland itinerary 5 days

5 days in Ireland is arguably the ideal length of time to explore a specific corner of Ireland, e.g. Galway and Mayo.

These 5 day trips our most popular self guided tours of Ireland. The reason for this is people  often  panic trying to squeeze in too much.

Chill! Each of our 5 day self guided tours of Ireland follow clear and logical routes.

6 day self guided Ireland tours

6 day Ireland itinerary

6 days in Ireland is a lovely amount of time that provides you with  endless  opportunities.

The best Ireland self drive tours for 6 days, in my opinion, is one that doesn’t stretch itself too thin.

If you’re starting in Belfast, for example, tackle the Causeway Coastal Route and then explore the many places to visit in Donegal .

7 day self guided tours of Ireland

7 day driving tours of ireland

If you’re spending 7 days in Ireland you’re in for a treat. A week gives you lots of options and a good whack of time to play with.

Longer Irish road trips like these give you loads of flexibility in terms of what you can do (even if it means the cost of a trip to Ireland increases).

If you’re visiting for 7 days, try and visit during summer or spring as the weather in Ireland tends to be better then and you’ll get more bang-for-your-buck.

8 day self drive tours of Ireland

8 day ireland self drive tours

Those with 8 days in Ireland have options, which is a luxury.

You’re not overly constrained by time, and 8 long days guarantee that you won’t need to hurry at any point (unless you want to, that is!).

With 8 days, you have the chance to explore multiple counties in depth. Or, if you like, you can go all-out and pack in as much as is physically possible.

The best driving tours of Ireland for 8 days, for me, would be starting in Dublin and then working down through Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford and then around through Cork and Kerry.

9 day Ireland self drive tours

9 days in Ireland

So, you’re spending 9 days in Ireland . Wonderful! However, you want to see all of the ‘main’ attractions during this time and you’re worried it’s too much.

It’s likely (and I’m basing this on getting emails from endless visitors) that you’re trying to pack in too much to the point that you’ll spend all your time moving accommodation and travelling.

9 days is a lovely chunk of time. But don’t get carried away. You can see and do  a lot  during this time frame. You just need to decide how much travelling about is ‘too much’.

10 day driving tours of Ireland

10 days in Ireland

Our 10 days in Ireland guides are the second most popular trip length and we first published them several years back.

Since then, they’ve been edited based on endless feedback and they have now been refined into tours that we’re proud of!

This is a mighty amount of time for an Irish road trip and it gives you a huge amount of flexibility.

For this trip length, you could easily pick 3-4 bases and fit a huge amount in while still taking it nice and handy. Or, you could go full whack and try and see as much of the island as possible!

11 day Ireland self drive itineraries

11 day self drive tours of ireland

Those spending 11 days in Ireland are the envy of many. This is a lovely chunk of time and it allows you to really explore until your heart’s content.

You can pick one of our Ireland self drive tours based on your starting point (e.g. Shannon or Belfast), your fitness level and how fast you like to travel.

Many people doing a trip of this length tend to edge towards fitting in as much as possible. However, avoid going overboard if you can.

12 day self guided Ireland tours

12 day self guided tours of ireland

If you’re spending 12 days in Ireland , you’re in for a treat. You can see a whole lot in 12 days, from the  many  castles in Ireland to islands, cliffs and lots more.

You don’t have to worry too much when it comes to picking a start point for a trip of this length, as you’ve a bit of room for error.

If I had the option, I’d start in Cork and drive the Wild Atlantic Way, taking in the likes of Kinsale , the Beara Peninsula , Doolin and Achill Island .

14 day Ireland self drive tours

2 week Ireland itinerary

Our 14 day self guided Ireland tours were some of the most enjoyable to research, plan and write as we had a fair idea that this trip length would be popular.

Thankfully, it was! Those of you planning a 2-week Ireland trip itinerary are on the cusp of a bucket list road trip that you’ll remember for a life time.

Although I’d argue that there’s no best Ireland itinerary for a trip this length, we’ve created 56 different options for you to choose from at the link below.

15 day self guided tours of Ireland

15 day ireland self drive tours

15 days in Ireland poses an endless amount of adventure opportunities. You have a trip that’ll be the envy of many ahead of you.

Now, with 15 days you have a lot of flexibility. You could easily explore opposite ends of Ireland with this amount of time (e.g. 5 days in Donegal, 3 in Antrim and then remainder in Cork and Kerry).

We spent a huge amount of time mapping out our 17-day Ireland self drive tours and, based on initial feedback, they’re going down very well already!

16 day self guided Irish road trip

16 day ireland itinerary

16 day Irish road trips give you the chance to see a huge amount of Ireland.

As was the case with all of our self guided tours of Ireland, we spent a lot of time planning our 16-day guides.

At the link below, you’ll be able to pick a trip based on start point, fitness level, mode of transport and how fast you like to travel.

17 day self drive vacations Ireland

17 days in Ireland

Although we don’t encounter many people spending 17 days in Ireland , this trip length does crop up from time-to-time.

To be honest with you, we found the 17 day self guided Ireland tours tricky to plan out.

However, we published and then heavily edited again after 5 months of feedback and our 17-day tour guides have now been read well over 30,000 times.

The best Ireland self drive tours for this length of time are ones that use carefully selected bases and avoid moving accommodation too frequently.

18 day self drive Ireland itinerary

18 day self guided tours of ireland

18 day Irish road trips are the stuff of dreams. It’s worth comparing our ‘Fast’ and ‘Slow’ 18-day driving tours of Ireland to see what’s possible with a trip of this length.

Those of you looking to see and do as much as possible will fit plenty into 18 days.

Those looking to explore at a leisurely pace might be surprised at what’s possible when following one of our 18-day self guided Ireland tours.

19 day self guided Ireland tour

19 day ireland self drive tours

A 19 day Irish road trip is hard to bate, however, and I know I’m like a broken record at this stage, it comes with pros and cons.

Planning self guided tours of Ireland of this length often lead people to think, ‘Ah, we’ve plenty of time – we can just head to Ireland and take it as it comes’ .

Don’t be that person as you’ll regret it when you get here. A trip of this length requires careful consideration and a  lot  of planning.

Luckily, we’ve 50+ 19-day driving tours of Ireland for you to browse at the link below.

20 days self driving tours of Ireland

20 day driving tours of ireland

Very few people, aside from those of us who live here, have the chance to spend 20 days in Ireland . This is bucket list territory.

This trip length provides you with two options:

  • Explore a specific region of Ireland in depth
  • Cram in as much as possible

For example, you could explore Kerry (the Ring of Kerry , Dingle Peninsula , etc.) and then progress through West Cork, Waterford, Wexford, and more.

The best self guided tours of Ireland for 20 days is one picks an adequate number of bases near key areas of interest and that avoids falling into the trap of trying to ‘fit everything in’.

21 days in Ireland self guided

21 day self drive tours of ireland

If you have the luxury of spending 21 days in Ireland , you’re in for a treat. An unforgettable experience awaits.

This was one of the hardest of our Ireland self drive tours to map out as there’s a danger of doing either too much or too little with a trip of this length.

It took us 8 days to research these 21-day itineraries and twice that to write and edit them. Enjoy!

FAQs about the best Ireland self drive tours

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from Ireland vacation ideas to detailed train itineraries.

In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.

Can I tour Ireland on my own?

Yes. Although many people tackle driving tours of Ireland with friends or family, many people go it alone. Ireland is relatively small which means that you can see a lot, even on day trips.

How many days do you need to drive around Ireland?

Although we have free self drive Ireland tours ranging from 2 to 28 days, the minimum we’d recommend for driving around Ireland is 7 days. Just keep in mind that you’ll be very limited in what you can see and do.

How do I plan a driving tour of Ireland?

Start with how long you have to play with and work from there. Once you have your trip length, move to when you can visit and then proceed to what part of Ireland you can arrive into.

Even today, Kylemore continues to operate as a working Abbey: here, the sisters live, work and pray, as well as welcome visitors from across the globe. Kylemore Abbey's greatest attraction is its location. Nestled at the base of Duchruach Mountain on the northern shore of Lough Pollacappul, in the heart of the Connemara Mountains, it is regarded as one of Ireland's most romantic locations.
