Forbes Travel Guide Announces 2021 Star Awards

Forbes Travel Guide (“FTG”), the only global rating system for luxury hotels, restaurants and spas, has unveiled its 2021 Star Awards, including a number of special accolades for individual workers and brands in the hospitality industry. All honorees are showcased on ForbesTravelGuide.com .

The 63rd annual list features 283 Five-Star, 576 Four-Star and 438 Recommended hotels; 73 Five-Star, 136 Four-Star and 77 Recommended restaurants; and 90 Five-Star and 200 Four-Star spas worldwide. These winners were inspected before the pandemic and when regional restrictions allowed the safe welcoming of guests. Here are some highlights from the 2021 honorees:

• Tokyo added four hotels to its Five-Star roster: The Capitol Hotel Tokyu; The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, A Luxury Collection Hotel; The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo; and Takanawa Hanakohro. The city now boasts nine Five-Star hotels.
• Five cities gained their first Five-Star hotel: Hilton Head (Montage Palmetto Bluff), Houston (The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston), Montreal (Four Seasons Hotel Montreal), Philadelphia (Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center) and Seattle (Four Seasons Hotel Seattle).
• Los Cabos welcomed a trio of new Five-Star winners: Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection; Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection; as well as Auberge Spa Chileno Bay.
• Bali picked up two first-time Five-Star hotels: The Mulia – Nusa Dua, Bali and The St. Regis Bali.
• Scotland claimed its first Five-Star win with The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte Hotel.
• In the United States, the states with the greatest number of Five-Star hotels include: California (20), New York (11), Florida (8), Nevada (6), Massachusetts (5) and Hawaii (5).
• S. cities with the most Five-Star hotels include: New York (10), Beverly Hills (6), Las Vegas (6) and Miami (6).
• Globally, the cities with the largest number of Five-Star hotels include: London (19), Macau (13), Paris (13), New York (10) and Tokyo (9).

The second annual Employee of the Year awards, sponsored by Frette, celebrate the exemplary staff members who stand out in their service of guests and co-workers:

Hotel Employee of the Year: Hisashi Sugimoto, master bartender, The Tokyo Station Hotel

The 80-year-old joined the Tokyo hotel in 1958 and invented many of the original cocktails that fill the menu at Bar Oak. Yet, his colleagues report that it’s his passion to make guests happy that keeps patrons returning after six decades.

Finalists: Manon Danois, housekeeping floor supervisor, Shangri-La Hotel Paris; John Goncalves, concierge, Hotel 41 in London; Ashley Lowry, recreation manager, Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa in Palm Coast, Florida; Ricardo Silva Pereira, front office guest service agent, Le Grand Bellevue in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Spa Employee of the Year: Najla Ceman, therapist, The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown

When the spa closed for nine months, the 20-year beauty veteran proactively became certified in numerous health-and-safety-related courses to ensure that she was prepared to meet the new demands upon reopening. But finding positivity in difficult times is a way of life for Ceman. When she left war-torn Bosnia 27 years ago, she had just started her first year of college. She recently has resumed her classes.

Finalists: Heriberto Peña, wellness ambassador, The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica; Phonthip Uppapong, senior spa trainer, The Oriental Spa, Bangkok; Denise Ward, attendant, The Lodge at Turning Stone Resort Casino’s Skana Spa in Verona, New York; and Hee Wei Feng, therapist, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur.

Restaurant Employee of the Year: Bruce Wong, supervisor, Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel’s Cucina

Wong is known among the staff for going the extra mile when it comes to taking care of guests. But he pays the same attention to colleagues, regularly hosting workshops to enhance the team's confidence. He also dedicated time to obtain a level 3 certification in Wine & Spirit Education Trust, among other initiatives.

Finalists: Jorge Blas Vasquez, kitchen supervisor, Bristol Panama; Nathan Gillespie, commis waiter, Ashford Castle’s The Drawing Room in County Mayo, Ireland; Akeel Shah, restaurant director, SingleThread Farms Restaurant in Healdsburg, California; Jeremy Stulak, server, Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass’ Kai Restaurant in Chandler, Arizona.

Hotel Instagram of the Year: Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi (pictured)

Forbes Travel Guide’s editorial department determined five nominees from its highest-performing luxury hotel posts on FTG’s own Instagram account for 2020. Then FTG asked its readers and followers to select their favorite feed in an online survey. Thousands voted in the contest. The Maldives resort won for curating a feed that radiates personality, engages with followers and has an overall stunning aesthetic.

Finalists: Airelles Gordes, La Bastide in the French Riviera; Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in Puerto Rico; Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort; and Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Lake Como.

To honor those who particularly shined during the pandemic, Forbes Travel Guide, the world-renowned expert in genuine Five-Star service, introduced the new Hospitality Stars of the Year awards, sponsored by Frette, in 2021:

Wellness Star: Hotel Esencia, Riviera Maya, Mexico

This distinction recognizes a property that spearheaded an inspired wellness initiative, like a noteworthy food program, a fitness and health offering, or a focus on design and amenities that enhance wellbeing. Hotel Esencia introduced a unique new room category, Rooftop Wellness suites, that come with a Mirror virtual fitness trainer, a Peloton bicycle, a Technogym weight set, yoga mats and an aromatherapy steam shower. The innovative accommodations also embrace the jungle setting with rooftop terraces, outdoor showers, solariums and private pools.

Finalists: Carillon Miami Wellness Resort; One&Only Palmilla, Los Cabos Resort; The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain; Sunstone Spa at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa Rancho Mirage, California.

Philanthropic Star: The Berkeley, London

This award salutes a property that helped others who faced adversity in 2020, whether through an international campaign or a community-based effort. When COVID-19 forced The Berkeley to close, the hotel created The Berkeley 999 Drive Thru, serving 500 meals daily during the first lockdown to emergency services. An additional 250 meals a day were given to the elderly and more vulnerable in the community, in partnership with Westminster Council. In total, more than 50,000 meals were provided. Staff members, many of whom were furloughed, volunteered to serve food and were a beacon of positivity.

Finalists: Drake Bay Getaway Resort in Costa Rica; Ocean House Management Collection in Rhode Island; SingleThread Farms in Healdsburg, California; and The Venetian Resort Las Vegas.

People First Star: Raffles Seychelles

This accolade is given to a hotel with an exceptional commitment to people and culture, including efforts related to improving staff health and happiness and overall support of the team’s mental wellbeing. When Raffles Seychelles was forced to close for several months, it saved team members’ jobs by reducing all salaries but continuing to provide housing and meals. Only 10 employees of 300 were not retained. When conditions improved, the hotel was able to pay a bonus to all employees.

Finalists: Acqualina Resort and Residences on the Beach in Miami, Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Miami, Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach and Royal Mansour Marrakech.

Service Visionary Star: Ocean House Management Collection

This category spotlights a property or brand that implemented a notable reimagined process that improved the hotel experience for staff and guests. With the OH Well program, the Ocean House team rethought its services early in the pandemic, with input from Harvard University experts. Some initiatives included a mobile cart that did room-to-room delivery of cocktails and complimentary appetizers to re-create the bar experience, personalized picnics, culinary garden and winter igloo outdoor dining setups, and private culinary and wine classes and dinners.

Finalists: Kimpton La Peer Hotel in L.A.; One&Only Palmilla, Los Cabos Resort; The Phoenician, A Luxury Collection Resort in Scottsdale; and The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston.

Health Security Star: Hilton Luxury Brands, Conrad and Waldorf Astoria, Americas

In honor of the new Sharecare VERIFIED™ with Forbes Travel Guide health security platform, FTG recognizes a brand or property that took smart, proactive steps to enhance guest and employee health safety. In response to the pandemic, Waldorf Astoria and Conrad in the Americas swiftly developed luxury service manuals with detailed videos and illustrations to thoroughly describe the modified guest experience with safety in mind. The brand also created a robust cleanliness and disinfection program. Properties in Forbes Travel Guide’s worldwide collection were asked to submit nominations for these industry awards. FTG received hundreds of entries and narrowed each category to five finalists. An executive committee then chose the winners.

An Inside Look at the Forbes Travel Guide

With so many hotel ratings systems out there, who can you trust? Should ratings systems be open to all, a la the People’s Choice Awards, or do more accurate results come from a system of professionals judging professionals, a la the Oscars or the Tonys? We take a look at one of the world's top rating guides for luxury properties.

International hotel ratings systems are everywhere. Many are amalgamations of other ratings systems; some, like TripAdvisor, average out user ratings; and then there’s the Forbes Travel Guide,  which claims to be “the only independent, global rating system for luxury hotels, restaurants and spas.”

There are a few things you should know about the Forbes Travel Guide right off the bat. First, Forbes doesn’t own it. The publisher licenses its name to this independent entity. Secondly, unlike many other ratings systems, a team of full-time professional mystery shoppers inspects every rated hotel listed in the Forbes Travel Guide.

Additionally, the same company offers consulting services to hotels. According to the Forbes Travel Guide LinkedIn profile , “We also provide the hospitality industry with learning tools and programs that deliver insight into the star rating process and expert guidance on connecting with guests most effectively.”

Although this fact leaves some hotel consultants complaining — off the record — about the possibility of perceived pay-to-play, Forbes Senior Vice President, Ratings Amanda Frasier insists that doesn’t happen.

But just how do those rating come about? Forbes Travel Guide has 11 offices around the world. Scouts based at those offices will go into a region and learn about the best hotels in the area.

According to Inzerillo, they do their homework by looking at the properties that get extensive media coverage; that luxury travel agents book; and that concierges in-market recommend. Next, the company send out inspectors, who have undergone a six-month training process, to rate the hotels selected. In 2018, those inspectors will span 60 countries; in 2019, the number will be 90.

Who are these inspectors? “Prior exposure to the luxury world is a benefit,” said Frasier, along with the ability to “write eloquent, objective reports according to our standards. They must articulate what they see and feel, but personal opinions cannot come in. Inspectors need to have a good memory and have the ability to blend in…. to be an unmemorable guest.”

Inspectors also have to have the flexibility to travel continuously. Hotels are never evaluated back to back in the same destination. Rather, according to Frasier, inspectors go on about 12 assignments a month, spending two or three nights per assignment.

“In any one month, the evaluator may find themselves in a new country/city every week. London in week one, Paris week two, Milan week three and Dubai week four would not be an unusual schedule,” she said.

If an assignment calls for an inspector to come with a partner or with kids — remember, it’s about being inconspicuous, and the single guy sitting alone at a honeymoon retreat is anything but — there are rare times they can have company along for the ride.

While inspectors do not go around properties with white gloves, checking for dust on the chandeliers, they do come equipped with a checklist containing 400 standards, starting with the reservations process and ending at check-out. According to Frasier, the Forbes scoring system weighs service factors at 75 percent, and physical factors at 25 percent.

“The most beautiful hotel isn’t the best hotel, because the best distinguishes itself with emotional connectivity, not how much marble it has,” Inzerillo said.

The guide benchmarks service standards (check-in process, room service) on factors such as courtesy and manners; graciousness, thoughtfulness and sense of personalized service. Meanwhile, it rates the physical aspects of the hotel on factors ranging from cleanliness and condition to guest comfort and convenience.

John Graham, the managing partner at the Forbes Five Star Twin Farms in Barnard, Vermont , notes, however, that  “applying one set of standards across the board can create vanilla.” In order to avoid vanilla, a  Standards Advisory Committee, a group of high-level executives  representing luxury hotel, restaurant, and spa companies of which Graham is a member, meets every year to refine the system and ensure relevance across a range of hospitality products.

According to Victoria R. Boomgarden, president of Direct Travel Luxe , “I think the Forbes Travel Guide definitely causes a buzz when the five stars are announced and we do refer to the list as professionals.  However, it’s only one of many sources we and our clients use—like Conde Nast Hot List or Top 100 Hotels by Travel + Leisure.  We also utilize the Andrew Harper endorsements and the Star Reports.”

Travel industry veteran Matthew Evins, chairman of an eponymous luxury brands, marketing and public relations company , isn’t keen on consumer-facing ratings systems, period. He argues by its very nature, “subjectively, luxury doesn’t have a standardized definition. So ratings and luxury are antithetical terms.”

However, judging by the way most luxury properties proudly market their stars, that view doesn’t appear to be widely shared. In fact, Twin Farms’ Graham says that because of the transparent and comprehensive way in which Forbes does the ratings, “the industry views it as the benchmark, a measure by which all are measured.”

4 Top Luxury Travel Trends By Forbes Travel Guide Editor Jennifer Kester

The pandemic has altered the way we travel, from COVID testing to mobile check-ins at hotels to using QR codes in restaurants. While some recent changes may prove temporary, others are part of longer-term trends, from purposely built wellness sanctuaries to epic bucket-list getaways.

Here are Forbes Travel Guide’s four top luxury travel trends to spot this year:

Searching for Wellness

People are looking for wellness outside of the home. In a September 2021 American Express survey, 76% of respondents said they wanted to spend more on travel to improve their well-being, and 55% said they’d pay extra for wellness activities on future vacations. This trend should continue to expand: Wellness tourism will see a 21% annual growth rate from 2020 to 2025, according to a December 2021 report from the Global Wellness Institute.

Taking note of this demand, hotels have made sure that finding wellness on vacation means more than simply hitting the spa. Instead, a new crop of getaways caters to every aspect of your well-being. On the Hawaiian island of Lanai , Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort uses a scientific approach to help you on a path to all-encompassing wellness. After your sensei (a health expert who oversees your stay) tests everything from your blood pressure to functional movements, you get a personalized itinerary of classes and activities that could include a full-body strength circuit, a lakefront meditation session and a treatment in the indoor-outdoor hales (individual spa villas), all of which take place on lush, tropical grounds dotted with sculptures. You may also enjoy off-site activities, such as an e-bike ride through the red mountains. Building on the wellness trend’s momentum, the new brand is set to open another hotel, Sensei Porcupine Creek, this year in Palm Springs.

Over in the Maldives , at JOALI BEING , which debuted last November, you undergo an integrative lifestyle assessment whose results help you choose a personalized journey that includes workouts (everything from yoga to muay thai), nourishing food (subtle suggestions might include adding ginger and turmeric to your meals to improve digestion), targeted spa services and individualized blends at the herbology center (it’s like an inviting tea lounge, where an herbalist will prepare a soothing cup to help what ails you). At the end of the day, your wellness journey continues, retiring to a breathtaking overwater villa with its own infinity pool and swing, proving that one of the best treatments is traveling to tranquil locales away from everyday stresses.

Crossing Off the Bucket List

Given the recent wider health crises, travelers are no longer relegating their bucket lists to the file labeled “one day”—they are taking their dream trips now. They’re seeking once-in-a-lifetime experiences like Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver ’s ice cave adventure. The Vancouver hotel sends you in a private helicopter to Whistler’s untouched snow-covered mountaintops. From there, a guide will lead you down into a real-life Fortress of Solitude, with gleaming walls that resemble white marble and archways strung with powder-blue icicles, along with a photographer on hand throughout to capture every icy Instagrammable moment. After wandering through the caves and learning about their origins, a five-course meal awaits in the snow.

If you want to explore the wonders of the ocean, learn freediving—the extreme sport where you descend into the deep with only a snorkel, fins and one inhale of breath—at the recently revamped Four Seasons Resort Hualalai . Your teacher will be former national freediving champion and national spearfishing champion Kimi Werner. Get the basics in the hotel’s newly renovated King’s Pond—a 1.8 million-gallon aquarium pool—before moving on to the Big Island ’s pristine waters, where Werner’s photographer husband will document your daring underwater exploits.

Getting Better Sleep

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a third of U.S. adults report getting less than the recommended seven or more hours of sleep nightly. A lack of rest can lead to health issues like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression, the CDC says.

One way people are battling sleepless nights is turning to hotels as places to recharge or practice better nighttime habits. Equinox Hotel Hudson Yards enlisted a sleep psychologist who has optimized its rooms for snoozing with dark spaces that have sound-canceling walls, blackout windows and Lutron temperature control systems for the perfect rest environment, and the New York City hotel offers sleep kits in the minibar, a bedtime ritual to ease you into slumber and a sleep coach. Mandarin Oriental, Geneva has developed its own Check-up with CENAS Sleep Clinic package that includes an overnight study that records your bodily rhythms, movements and other parameters to identify possible sleep disorders.

Downtown L.A. ’s Hotel Figueroa has created its new Rest & Recovery Suite with the help of some fitness brands: preorder a Pluto Pillow—customized to your napping preferences—so it’s waiting in the suite and then sprawl out on an Eight Sleep mattress that uses smart technology to adjust the temperature on each side of the bed. The next day, work out with the suite’s FORME personal strength fitness mirror, and then use Normatec recovery tools from Hyperice.

Some hotel brands are making sleep a company-wide initiative. The Langham Hotels & Resorts has partnered with the World Sleep Society for its new Sleep Matters program, which includes a turndown kit (stocked with herbal tea, earplugs, an eye mask, sleep tip cards and an all-natural sleep aid beverage), a wellness menu (including white noise machines, pillow options and weighted blankets) and a snooze-inducing Spotify playlist. Rosewood Hotels & Resorts recently introduced its Alchemy of Sleep offerings designed to promote rest. They’re unique in each destination, like Rosewood Little Dix Bay ’s Acu Doze acupuncture; Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel ’s sleep naturopathy consultations; and Rosewood Baha Mar ’s bush tea sleep sessions with an herbalist.

Staying Sustainable

Eighty-six percent of travelers want to travel more sustainably, but only half of that number manage to do so often, according to Accenture. However, that likely will change as more hotels adopt leading-edge sustainability measures.

There are independent properties that have long established themselves as eco trailblazers, like Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, Aruba —the Caribbean’s first carbon-neutral resort, it banned single-use plastics in the 1980s. French Polynesia ’s The Brando , which is close to being carbon neutral, was the first resort in the world to obtain LEED Platinum, the highest certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The Ranch at Laguna Beach has devised a system that uses reclaimed water to irrigate its grounds, which saves more than 21.2 million gallons of water each year in drought-prone California, and every glass bottle on the property is crushed into sand and repurposed to fill golf course bunkers, pavement repairs and pool filtration.

However, bigger brands are joining in. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group established an executive advisory panel for sustainability in 2018, which has been working since to push forward reform like eliminating single-use plastics throughout all properties. The brand has set its sights on food procurement, pledging to remove all endangered seafood species from hotel menus and only buying responsibly sourced coffee, tea, vanilla and cocoa by the end of 2022.

In 2018, Hilton set goals to double its investment in social impact and cut its environmental footprint in half by 2030. It’s making progress at the company-wide level with 88% of its portfolio participating in soap recycling and with initiatives at its individual properties: Conrad Washington, DC , for example, employs a stormwater management system that captures 97% of rainfall to irrigate the terraces and to cool its air-conditioning towers.
