Discover Old European Charm on a Baltic Sea Cruise

If you’ve ever wanted to step inside a Medieval fairytale, a Baltic Sea cruise most certainly delivers. Experience the Middle Ages as you explore Tallinn’s UNESCO-protected Old Town. Marvel at Denmark’s magical castles, and amble along the cobblestone streets and radiant, historic buildings of Gamla Stan in Stockholm. Explore religious sites and the all-encompassing history of Berlin. Spend the afternoon in one of Helsinki’s fascinating museums, then take a dip in the deep blue Baltic Sea.

Embark on an unforgettable cruise vacation aboard Celebrity Apex or Celebrity Silhouette, where you’ll find stylish accommodations, luxurious amenities, and globally inspired cuisine. Discover the beguiling countries that surround the Baltic Sea with Celebrity Cruises, voted “Best Cruise Line in Europe” for nine consecutive years at Travel Weekly’s 16th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

Baltic Sea Cruise Highlights

Castles & palaces.

The countries along the Baltic Sea are brimming with historic castles and palaces. Go on a whirlwind tour of the famous castles of North Zealand outside of Copenhagen to see the royals’ part-time residence and the setting for Hamlet . Admire the stately Stockholm Palace where the King of Sweden resides. Explore the majestic Catherine Palace, the former summer retreat of Russian tsars. Revel in the romance and splendor of these opulent landmarks.

Outdoor Escapes

Kayak the Finnish archipelago surrounding Helsinki, or explore the scenic countryside of Porvoo. In Stockholm, venture beyond the city to the Långholmen Kajak, a Venice-like system of canals where you can enjoy a Swedish gondola ride. Venture to the Malusi islands off the coast of Estonia to spot seals in their natural habitat.

Urban Exploration

The extraordinary cities you’ll visit on a Baltic Sea cruise are brimming with culture, history, and excitement at every turn. Admire the quintessential rust-colored roofs of Tallinn. Stroll alongside the vibrant facades of Gamla Stan’s storied structures in Stockholm. Do as the locals do and bike through Copenhagen’s streets, admiring the sleek Scandinavian design juxtaposed with hundreds of years of history at every turn.

Featured Ports

Copenhagen, denmark.

A stop in Copenhagen makes for a fabulous day in port while on a cruise to Scandinavia and to Northern Europe’s capitals. Spend the day admiring the city’s opulent castles and stroll along the colorful waterfront district of Nyhavn. Don’t forget to try a Danish brew and sample local eats at a food hall while you’re here.

Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in northern Europe. The city’s Old Town is filled with medieval houses and cobblestone alleyways still protected by the remnants of the city wall. Aside from Tallin’s charming city, you can venture to the countryside to sip vodka amongst the ruins of Rakvere Castle, or sample cheese at a local dairy farm.

Stockholm, Sweden

Discover Stockholm, the trend-setting capital of Sweden known as “Beauty on the Water”. Get a glimpse of a time before industrialization at Skansen, an open-air museum and zoo that showcases Sweden’s traditional way of life and exotic wildlife. Spend an afternoon at the Nationalmuseum or the Vasa Museum for a crash course in Viking history and Swedish art. No trip to the city is complete without spending a few hours in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town.

Baltic Sea Cruise Itineraries

On a cruise to the Baltic Sea, you’ll sail on award-winning ships like Celebrity Apex or Celebrity Silhouette. Itineraries range from 11 to 13 nights and depart from Rotterdam or Amsterdam, Netherlands and Southampton, England (which is conveniently close to London) from May to August.

Itineraries

Europe is closer than ever with flights by celebrity.

Not only do we offer the best way to explore Europe, but we also make it easy to get there with Flights by Celebrity℠. Relax knowing you’re booking the lowest airfare and have a dedicated team helping you get to your ship—and back.

Why Sail on a Baltic Sea Cruise with Celebrity

Experience some of Europe’s most riveting cities while sailing in complete luxury on one of our cruise ships. Lounge at the Lawn Club and watch the Baltic Sea glitter as day turns to dusk. Sample local beer in Estonia, then try a new cocktail at one of our innovative bars. After a long, unforgettable day spent exploring Stockholm or Helsinki, you’ll be welcomed back to the ship, where exquisite cuisine, an award-winning wine list, and luxurious staterooms and suites await.

The Nordic shores also beckon, where the trendy metropolitan landscape belies remnants of a Viking past, but only at first glance. However, it’s not all artifacts and monuments. Rock paintings make way for cutting-edge marvels — like the Löyly floating sauna or Black Diamond Royal Library — when you take in the sights of these harbour cities. Enjoy a boat ride through the waterways of Stockholm, stroll leisurely along a marina in Helsinki, or pay your respects to the Little Mermaid statue on Copenhagen’s promenade — wherever your journey takes you, you’ll discover that this part of Europe blends old and new like no other. And if you’re fortunate enough to celebrate the festive season here, you might even find out for yourself the true meaning of hygge!

Must-Sees - Baltic Sea

A Baltic Sea cruise taking in Russia, the Baltic states and Scandinavia provides an opportunity to go back in time to a Europe where royal and imperial families reigned over regions brimming with culture. This historical heritage can still be seen in all the area's major cities.

Must-Sees - Baltic Sea

The Essentials - Baltic Sea

Before setting off on a Baltic Sea cruise , discover some of the cultural traits of this region, with its blend of both Nordic and Slavic influences. Historic city centres and modern architecture, peaceful countryside and an ultra-connected society: tradition and modernity standing side-by-side.

Walk around Stockholm's old town - Sweden

Walk around Stockholm's old town - Sweden

Located on Gamla Stan island by the water, Stockholm's old town is made up of typical narrow paved alleyways and buildings. This is the place people come to gauge the pulse of a stunning city as well as to visit its oldest cathedral and, of course, the royal palace . Although you can't go into all the 608 rooms this impressive building contains, you will still be charmed by the royal apartments in Baroque and Rococo style. Nearby, City Hall watches over the Swedish capital like a lighthouse. Each year, it hosts the banquet put on for the Nobel Prize ceremony.

Take in Tallinn's medieval ambiance - Estonia

Take in Tallinn's medieval ambiance - Estonia

The Estonian capital is a lovely size and has managed to preserve its remarkable medieval centre . The upper town is also nice to visit with its watchtowers, squares and paved alleyways with old arches and its superb Russian Orthodox church dating from 1900. To continue enjoying your immersion in Tallinn 's past, there's nothing better than an Estonian folk performance.

Marvel at Saint Petersburg, the Venice of the North - Russia

Marvel at Saint Petersburg, "the Venice of the North" - Russia

Saint Petersburg is nicknamed the " Venice of the North " thanks to its many canals. One of the best ways to see the city's numerous palaces and castles (Stroganov, Anitchkov, etc.) that showcase its prosperity in past centuries is to go for a panoramic boat ride. Once back on land, the magic continues with visits to various unmissable landmarks like the splendid Yusupov Palace , St Isaac's Cathedral and the iconic Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood .

Wander around the galleries at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg - Russia

Wander around the galleries at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg - Russia

The architecture of the Hermitage building — one of the biggest museums in the world — is itself exceptional. From the outside, the green, white and gold facade, the columns and the huge pediments set the tone. Enter the buildings (Hermitage Theatre, Small Hermitage, Large Hermitage, New Hermitage, Winter Palace and General Staff Building) to find yourself in the lap of luxury, surrounded by magnificent decor. With huge staircases, colonnades, floors decked out in marble or sumptuous parquet, walls decorated with mouldings, gilding, mosaics, bas-reliefs, other paintings and more, almost 1,000 rooms are open to the public covering 66,000 square metres and showcasing over 60,000 works selected from the museum's 3-million-strong collection.

Treat yourself to a tour through Finland's rural past

Treat yourself to a tour through Finland's rural past

Although the Finnish capital offers plenty of charms, you can also take a more unusual trip to Seurasaari Island a few kilometres from the city centre. The ethnologist Axel Olai Heikel chose this green area as the site for no fewer than 85 buildings (houses, farms, windmill, cafe and shop). Gathered from all over the country, put back up on the island and authentically decorated, these buildings provide an insight into everyday Finnish life between the 12th century and the start of the 20th century.

Découvrir Riga, entre terre et canaux - Lettonie

Explore Riga on land and on the canals - Latvia

Take a guided boat tour on the Daugava River snaking through Riga to get an initial impression of the city, its tower-filled historic centre, its castle, its landmarks and its parks. If you want more from your visit to the Latvian capital, there's nothing better than walking around the city centre next. Riga Cathedral is worth a detour with its impressive 6,700-pipe organ. In Town Hall Square, St Peter's Church with its bell tower and the House of the Blackheads are worth a visit.

Wander round Copenhagen - Denmark

Wander round Copenhagen - Denmark

The best-known thing about Copenhagen tends to be its iconic little mermaid statue. Yet, the Danish capital often surprises visitors. There are lovely walks to be had through the pedestrian city-centre streets with their designer boutiques, art galleries, cafes and tea rooms. The solemn royal Amalienborg Palace , the jubilant Tivoli Gardens and the quiet Nyhavn waterfront confirm that Copenhagen is a multi-faceted and lively city that makes a great stopover destination.

Dos. In the Baltic countries, whether it's Estonia, Lithuania or Latvia, people represent numbers using only the fingers and not the thumb. "One" is indicated with the index finger, "two" with the middle finger, etc. Don'ts. In Russia and the Baltic countries, shaking hands with one person on one side of a porch and the other person on the other side is said to bring bad luck, as does the act of remaining standing in a doorway. Both parties must be on the same side of the entrance when greeting each other. In Finland, people never interrupt each other: each person speaks in turn.

Unique features

Along the Baltic coast, whether in Russia, Finland or the Baltic countries, ice bathing is a strongly anchored tradition. Hailed for its beneficial effects on blood circulation and in strengthening the immune system, it's an activity that has to be prepared for properly. In Russia, those who take part in the practice are nicknamed morji (walruses).

Essential phrases

cruise baltic 2023

Inhabitants of the Nordic countries, from Canada to Finland, are particularly fond of a small berry that grows in peat bogs close to marshes, especially in Lapland: the cloudberry , or lakka . These small yellow fruits picked in summer and rich in vitamin C are preserved for winter and used to make delicious tarts, jams, cordials and liqueurs.

Myths & legends

Amber , treasure of the Baltic Sea, has inspired many legends. According to traditional stories and tales, these translucent pearls of pine resin symbolise the tears of Jūratė, goddess of the mermaids and fiancée of Potrimpo, god of the sea, and the shards of her underwater amber palace. The goddess incurred the wrath of the gods by falling for the charms of the brave fisherman Kastytis, and to punish her, Perkūnas, the god of thunder and the sky, killed her lover and struck down her palace and Potrimpo chained her to the ruins forever.

In the spotlight

Estonia is one of the most digitally cutting edge countries in the world and also the birthplace of Skype. It even sometimes referred to as E-stonia , which is the nickname that's been given to this little nation that has become a paradise for startups . Having e-resident status in Estonia allows digital entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world to domicile their companies in the country and enjoy the benefits of both an advantageous tax system and access to the European market, all managed remotely. With the exception of marriages, divorces and property purchases, all administrative processes in the country are carried out online and more than 90 percent of the population have electronic ID cards.

Books. In The Man Who Spoke Snakish (Grove Press Atlantic, 2015), winner of the French prix de l'imaginaire 2014 in the foreign novel category, the Estonian author Andrus Kivirähk evokes the world of the ancestors and casts a discerning eye over the present by immersing the reader in a phantasmagorical universe populated with mythical creatures and featuring dialogues between humans and animals.

Music. The kantele , a kind of traditional five-stringed zither and a national symbol in Finland, though it's also found in Russia and the Baltic countries too, was once used to accompany both the songs of bards and poets and traditional folk dancing. The delicate sounds of this sacred instrument served to intensify the romanticism of the national narrative in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. The repertoire associated with it has broadened and expanded since its introduction into the school and conservatory curriculums in the 1970s and 80s.

Film. Actor, director and producer Aki Kaurismäki is one of the iconic figures of European arthouse cinema. Influenced by the French New Wave and cinema burlesque, this Finnish artist uses depictions of marginalised or quirky and off-the-wall characters in his films to paint a poetic and melancholic picture of fragile societies. He has shot several films in France, including La Vie de Bohème (1992) and Le Havre (2011). The Man Without a Past (2002) and The Other Side of Hope (2017) were respectively awarded a Grand Prix at Cannes and a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

Facts and figures

The 24th of June (Saint John's Day) is a special date in the calendar in all the Nordic countries. It is a date on which people celebrate the return of the sun, which stays shining in the sky till midnight at this time of year. It's also an occasion for lighting bonfires and partying long into the night. The shortest nights of the year occur between the 11th June and the beginning of July.

How Baltic cruises are innovating for 2023

With St Petersburg and other Russian ports now off-limits to travellers, we look at how Baltic cruises are filling the void.

Despite the loss to the itinerary of St Petersburg, cruises to the Baltic have plenty to offer and are continuing at full steam. Other notable cities are showing that they play more than a supporting role, including the waterway-filled wonders of Copenhagen and Stockholm, the modernist delights of Helsinki and the pretty, narrow, cobblestoned charms of Riga and Tallinn.   Unexpected delights include Klaipeda in Lithuania, tucked behind the 61-mile Curonian Spit, a slither of sand and dunes that crosses the border with the standalone Russian province of Kaliningrad halfway down. No one goes near the boundary, but an e-bike tour involving tiny ferries visits Smiltynės Beach, which resembles the wild Californian coast. Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers a Baltic Pleasures cruise in 2023, as well as two others: Northern Folktales & Traditions and Under The Midnight Sun, which take in Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.

The Estonian capital, Tallinn.

Which ports have filled the gap?

It’s been boom time for smaller places on the edge of Scandinavia. These include the island of Bornholm — a placid agricultural haven full of wheatfields, cattle, one of Denmark’s biggest vineyards (with wine and honey grappa made from its own bees) and little seaside villages. Another is Skagen, at the tip of Denmark’s finger-like northern protrusion, where the North Sea greets the Baltic and beaches meet in an entrancing eddy of sand. It’s an almost unheard-of spot that offers wild beauty as well   as gentle cycling excursions. Both destinations are on Ambassador Cruise Line’s Hidden Nordic Treasures sailing, which also visits Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. On Oceania’s Baltic Treasures cruise, you can visit the tiny Finnish town of Hamina (listed on itineraries as Kotka, the nearby port). It was once part of the Russian Empire and sits 25 miles from the border. Close by, Langinkoski Imperial Fishing Lodge, on the Kymi river, is now a museum. Alexander III of Russia used to come to his summer house here to escape the pressures back home — ironically cruising from St Petersburg by steam yacht in the late 1880s. Princess Cruises has updated its two 2023 Baltic cruise itineraries by swapping out St Petersburg for Visby on the Swedish isle of Gotland. Reckoned to be Scandinavia’s best preserved medieval city, it’s circled by a two-mile wall. Its annual Medieval   Week   in August — a festival commemorating the Middle Ages with performances, lectures and markets — is often attended by many visitors from varied cruise ships.

What are the experts saying?

Bernard Carter, senior vice president and managing director EMEA at Oceania Cruises, says: “For 2023, the Baltic is actually further ahead for us at this point than in any of the past four years. St Petersburg would take up quite a chunk of the itinerary as we’d stay two nights and three days, so the change allows us to go to more ports. We’re definitely not going to pull out of the Baltic.”

Cruise Operator Viking’s IPO Looks Like a Winner

V iking Cruises has turned European river travel into a lucrative business by catering to the Masterpiece Theater crowd—affluent older American tourists interested in culture, art, and history.

The cruise line’s parent, Viking Holdings, plans to go public in the coming week. The deal could generate a positive reception from investors due to the company’s profitability, high-end niche, and growth prospects.

Viking plans to sell 44 million shares in a price range of $21 to $25, which would raise $1 billion and value the company at around $10 billion based on 431 million shares outstanding, according to its prospectus. The deal is expected to be priced on April 30 and begin trading on May 1. The stock will trade on the NYSE under the ticker VIK. Underwriters include BofA Securities, J.P. Morgan, UBS, and Wells Fargo.

The company operates 92 vessels including 58 of its signature flat, long ships accommodating 190 passengers each that ply European rivers such as the Seine, Rhine, and Danube. The company’s slogan is “Exploring the World in Comfort.”

The Viking experience is the antithesis of boozy fun marketed by big cruise lines on their massive ships. There are no children under 18 allowed on Viking vessels and there are no casinos on board.

Founded in 1997, Viking has become synonymous with European river travel due in part to shrewd marketing. It sponsored PBS’s Masterpiece Theater, including the hit series Downton Abbey. The company diversified into the luxury ocean market in 2015 and now leads in that sector.

The company had $4.7 billion in revenue in 2023, up nearly 50% from 2022, and it earned a pro forma 56 cents a share excluding special factors. At the midpoint of the pricing range, the company would be valued at a steep 41 times its 2023 pro forma earnings.

But the stock looks reasonable based on free cash flow. It’s valued at about 10 times the $1 billion of free cash flow that it generated last year. Using another metric, the company is valued at about 13 times its 2023 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda. Viking has less than $4 billion of net debt.

Viking released some first-quarter financials in its prospectus that showed improvement over the same period in 2023. Revenue of $715 million at the midpoint of a range was up 14% versus the year-earlier period, and its operating loss narrowed to $80 million at the midpoint of the range, against a $116 million loss in the first quarter of 2023. The first quarter is seasonally weak, with the company profitable in the second and third quarters of the year.

The luxury market is hot, with investors gravitating toward stocks such as Ferrari and Hermès. The company bills itself as the only “pure play luxury public cruise line.”

The initial public offering will represent a score for CEO, chairman and founder Torstein Hagen and for investors TPG and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

Before the IPO, Hagen owned about 54% of the company, with TPG and CPP at roughly 21% each. In the IPO, the company will sell 11 million shares and TPG and CPP a total of 33 million.

Viking carried about 650,000 passengers in 2023, who paid an average of more than $7,000 per trip against about $2,000 for cruise line industry leader Carnival, which is a mostly mass-market company. Viking caters to travelers, mostly Americans, who are 55 years old or over and who are interested in culture, art, music, history, and science. it caters to what it calls “thinking people.”

Viking says it has 51% of the riverboat market for North American tourists. In 2015, it started an ocean cruising division and now has an industry-leading share of 26%.

In a presentation available on the RetailRoadshow website, Hagen said that Viking has disproved the industry view that it’s “tough making money on smaller ships.” Viking’s riverboats are larger than those of many of its competitors, which allows for more passengers and profitability.

The company sees considerable growth potential in coming years, with 18 new riverboats and six oceangoing ships due for delivery through 2028. Part of its strategy is to operate identical river long-ships and oceangoing ships to simplify marketing and maintenance.

Challenges for Viking include growing competition in the European river market, with some rivals offering what they tout as a more exclusive experience than Viking. Travel specialist Tauck, for instance, notes on its website that its riverboats carry no more than 130 guests.

There are only so many European rivers to experience. Viking’s growth could come from its ocean travel focused on Europe (mostly the Mediterranean and Baltic seas) as well as the Antarctic. River travel is growing on waterways such as the Mississippi in the U.S. and the Mekong in Southeast Asia.

“We maintain a clear focus on our most relevant customer group: English-speaking travelers aged 55 years old and over, who have the time, money, and desire to explore the world,” Hagen wrote in the prospectus. That strategy has worked, and Viking could be rewarded for it when it goes public soon.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Russia could be shifting battlefield focus

Russia's focus on the battlefield may be shifting to areas other than around Avdiivka, according to a thinktank. Meanwhile, fire has broken out at a Russian oil refinery after Ukrainian drone attacks. Listen to a Daily podcast on whether the UK should send troops to Ukraine as you scroll.

  • Live reporting by Lauren Russell

At least two people have been killed and others injured after Russian guided bombs targeted the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, the regional governor has said.

Oleh Syniehubov said a man and a woman were travelling in a car in the village of Zolochiv when it was struck.

A 77-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman were injured after three fires broke out as a result of the impact.

Ten private homes were also damaged in the blast but no casualties were reported.

The region of Kharkiv has been under intense fire by Russian forces that have targeted energy infrastructure.

Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy said yesterday that the country needed a "significant acceleration" in the delivery of weapons to enable its troops to push back advancing Russian troops in several parts of the front line.

The Ukrainian security service (SBU) is today conducting counter-intelligence measures in a Kyiv district.

The main purpose of the activity is to carry out inspections on individual buildings and premises to identify prohibited items, the SBU said.

It said the district of Shevchenkiv, including the Sofiyska and Mykhailivska squares in the old part of the city, will be the main focus of the operation.

Checks will also be carried out on citizens, some of who may be asked to show identification documents and observe curfew.

The SBU said the national police force and the military law and order service will be involved.

A 36-year-old US citizen has pleaded guilty to conspiring to smuggle over $250,000 (£200,000) worth of sensitive drone technology to Russia, the US Department of Justice has said.

Nikolay Grigorev pleaded guilty yesterday after more than 11,500 electronic components were stopped from going to Russia, fuelling the war on Ukraine.

He faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Lisa Monaco, deputy attorney general in New York, said: "The justice department will continue to hold accountable those who defy our sanctions and export controls to support Russia's unprovoked and unjustified aggression in Ukraine – whether they're based in New York City or overseas."

The justice department said it is still searching for two other people connected to the allegations.

These images show devastation in Kharkiv after Russian strikes yesterday.

One person died in the attack, which appeared to target the northeastern region's railway infrastructure.

Two districts of the city were hit and at least nine people were injured.

A short time ago, we brought you a report from Russia detailing that defence minister Sergei Shoigu had ordered new weapons for Moscow (see 6.56am post).

But what about weapons for Kyiv?

On the Ukrainian side, a massive US military assistance package will soon be felt on the battlefield.

On Monday, the White House confirmed that security assistance deliveries were taking place.

"The aid into Ukraine is ongoing. They have been receiving that security assistance," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

"I want to be very careful, because there is operational security," she noted, "but we hope that the aid will get to the frontlines soon so that Ukraine can continue to defend itself."

The bill, worth some $60bn in support for Ukraine, was finally signed into law on 24 April after months of debate in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

Russia's focus on the battlefield may be shifting to areas other than around Avdiivka, according to a leading thinktank.

Moscow's forces have seen their considerable progress slow to the west of the city, with troops now appearing to be concentrated in the Chasiv Yar direction, the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has said.

Chasiv Yar is some 80km north of Avdiivka.

"The Ukrainian General Staff's morning and evening reports [yesterday] stated that Ukrainian forces repelled a total of 47 Russian attacks in the Avdiivka direction and 57 Russian attacks in the Bakhmut direction throughout the day, notably a much higher number of attacks in the Chasiv Yar direction than Ukrainian sources have recently reported out on," ISW said in a report.

"One day's worth of reporting is not sufficient to establish a pattern," it said, "but it may suggest that Russian forces are somewhat slowing down the rate of attacks around Avdiivka while re-committing to offensive pushes around Chasiv Yar", it added.

Reports have suggested Russia has set its sights on the strategic town of Chasiv Yar which, if captured, would make it easier for Moscow to advance further in the east.

ISW also noted recent Russian successes near Avdiivka, notably at Ocheretyne (northwest of Avdiivka) and Novokalynove (north of Avdiivka), but said "the rate of confirmed advances appears to have slowed".

Here's what the current battlefield situation looks like, according to ISW...

Russia's defence minister has ordered bigger and speedier weapon deliveries for its troops in Ukraine, the Russian defence ministry has said.

In a statement, the Kremlin's defence minister Sergei Shoigu said: "To maintain the required pace of the offensive it is necessary to increase the volume and quality of weapons and military equipment supplied to the troops, primarily weapons."

The comments were made days after Ukraine's troops were compelled to make a tactical retreat from three villages in the eastern region, where the Kremlin's forces have been making incremental gains.

Ukraine and its Western partners are in a race against the clock to deploy critical new military aid that can help check the recent steady Russian advance across eastern areas, as well as thwart drone and missile attacks.

Ukraine launched drones on several Russian regions overnight, Russian officials are saying this morning, with Russian news outlets reporting a fire at the Ryazan oil refinery after the attack.

Pavel Malkov, governor of the Ryazan region in western Russia, said there were no injuries in the drone attacks there.

But Russian Telegram channel Baza , which is close to the security services, said the attack sparked a fire at the Ryazan refinery.

"Eyewitnesses reported that a rumble was heard, and then two explosions occurred," the channel reported.

"Operational services employees are currently working at the oil refinery. According to preliminary data, no victims."

The refinery, owned and run by Rosneft, refines about 5.8% of Russia's total refined crude.

It has been a frequent target for Ukraine's air attacks.

The governors of the Kursk and Voronezh regions in southwest Russia that border Ukraine also reported drone attacks on their territories, saying there was no damage or injuries.

Russia rarely discloses information about the full impact of Ukraine's attacks on its territory and infrastructure.

Sky News cannot independently verify the reports.

Welcome back to our coverage of the Ukraine war.

Yesterday, the death toll from a Russian missile attack which targeted an educational institution in a popular seafront park in the Black Sea port of Odesa rose to five.

Here are the other key developments over the last 24 hours:

  • One woman was killed and three people were wounded after Ukrainian forces shelled the border village of Kozino, in Russia's Kursk region;
  • Russian officials said that Ukraine attacked Crimea with US-produced army tactical missile systems (ATACMS) in an attempt to pierce Russian air defences of the annexed peninsula but that six were shot down;
  • Russian guided bombs targeting a railway killed at least one person and damaged civilian infrastructure in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, officials said;
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine needed "a significant acceleration" in deliveries of weaponry from its partners.

Live events elsewhere mean we are leaving our coverage of the Ukraine war there for the day.

The main development this morning was the rise in the number of people killed in a Russian strike on Odesa yesterday to five.

Read more details in our posts below - and we'll be back with rolling updates and analysis of the war soon.

A company is turning former cruise ships into floating hotels — see inside its largest 'floatel'

  • Bridgemans ServicesGroup operates a fleet of former cruise ships turned into hotels.
  • Its "floatels" are designed to house workers during long-term projects.
  • See its largest 652-cabin floatel with a game room and buffet.

Insider Today

Some old and unwanted cruise ships meet their demise at ship-breaking yards , where they are disassembled and sold for scrap.

Other vessels find a more fortunate fate, receiving a second chance to do what they already do best: serve as floating hotels.

Canada-based Bridgemans Services Group buys and charters former cruise ships to turn into "floatels," outfitted with standard cruise amenities like daily housekeeping, buffets, and relaxing lounges.

But the ships aren't designed to transport tourists from one destination to another anymore. Instead, companies turn to Bridgeman when they need to house workers for a long-term project, whether it be the construction of an offshore wind farm in Europe or the shooting of a major film in a remote destination.

Floatels can accommodate workers in remote destinations where hotels might not be an option.

cruise baltic 2023

In more metropolitan areas, Bridgemans says its ships could lessen the stress an inundation of workers might have on the local housing market.

And once they are no longer needed, the vessels depart and "leave no trace behind," the company said.

Over the last decade, Bridgemans has deployed its ships for 15 projects on every continent, Brian Grange, the company's president, told Business Insider.

cruise baltic 2023

Grange said that its deployments — most often for liquified natural gas companies — last for an average of two years.

In the past, it has also provided accommodations for MSC Cruises at its Ocean Cay private island and housing for more than 1,000 workers in the Philippines' on a project for the Manila International Airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company's three ships range from 150 to 652 cabins.

cruise baltic 2023

The floatel operator acquired its largest ship, the 561-foot-long MV Isabelle X, in 2023.

In its past life, the 35-year-old vessel sailed around the Baltic Sea as one of Estonia-based Tallink Gruipp's cruise ships.

But gone are its days of leisurely cruising. The 35,000 gross-ton ship is now on its first deployment in Howe Sound, just north of Vancouver, where it's housing more than 600 workers who are building Woodfibre LNG's "net zero" LNG export facility.

Isabelle X underwent a six-month retrofit before it was sent to Howe Sound.

cruise baltic 2023

The process included updating the ship's cabins and adding amenities like a game room and an 8,000-square-foot gym.

The latter two are especially important: "We need to make sure we delineate between work and home," Grange told BI. "We have to create a social environment on board these vessels that makes it attractive for workforces around the world."

During their free time, workers can play billiards, relax in the outdoor lounge, or use the ship’s WiFi to catch up on social media.

cruise baltic 2023

The sports lounge has large television screens, while the games lounge has darts, ping pong tables, and air hockey.

The 'quiet lounges' are the go-to space for people who need to unwind after a long work day.

cruise baltic 2023

Or, they could recharge and catch up on the latest shows in their cabins, which all come with desks, storage, and 32-inch televisions.

Like a typical cruise ship, Bridgemans' vessels have buffets with live cooking stations, a dessert bar, and the occasional themed night.

cruise baltic 2023

The ships' chefs tailor their menus to the demographic and dietary restrictions of the workers on board, the company's president told BI.

Residents can expect at least four protein options, plenty of veggies, and handmade bread and desserts.

Unlike most cruise lines, Bridgemans can pre-purchase all the food it needs before deployment.

cruise baltic 2023

Grange says this allows the ships to maintain food quality and consistency in remote locations.

Remember that deployment in the Philippines during COVID-19? He said the ship had packed almost 800 tons of food ahead of the project.

He wouldn’t disclose the cost to rent one of Bridgemans’ floatels.

cruise baltic 2023

But he did note that the cost of a cabin on the Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound is comparable to a hotel room in nearby Vancouver, as is the case with most of its projects near major cities.

The company’s most recent acquisition, the 150-cabin Diamond XI, is currently being retrofitted and would be ready for deployment this year.

cruise baltic 2023

According to the company's president, the vessel is small and high-end, likely to be used for sporting events and movie shoots.

It could also be the start of a greater expansion: He hopes to add two or three more vessels to its fleet in the next five years.

"The world has opened up to this as a valued alternative to housing," Grange told BI.

cruise baltic 2023

Who knows, the next time you see a cruise ship off the coast, there's a slim but possible chance it could be housing workers — not vacationers.
