The Legend of the Danube: can’t miss the Legenda Boat trips in Budapest

Hop aboard one of the 4 sightseeing boats of legenda, and join a cruise that shows you budapest like no other tour. .

Ever since the first Roman settlement was founded over two millennia ago, Budapest’s history, economy, and transportation have been fundamentally defined by the river Danube. Splitting the capital in two (Buda and Pest), the Danube is the second-longest in Europe after the Volga, with hundreds of ships passing through one of the most scenic river sections from Germany to Bulgaria. No wonder that the Hungarian capital has a plethora of boat trips you could choose from: some take you on a river cruise around downtown Budapest, others pass the city limits and dazzle you with the one-of-a-kind landscape of the Danube Bend. However, none quite capture the beauty of Budapest like Legenda cruises: read on to find out why!

The Legenda fleet only has boats that have a 360-degree panoramic view

About Legenda

A company named after one of its boats, Legenda has a 4-boat strong fleet and offers daytime and nighttime cruises on the Danube. All four ships come with a panorama view, giving passengers a unique vantage point of the city around the clock, and if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also have the option to have a candlelight dinner aboard one of the ships.

Budapest by day: Duna Bella

For any tourist visiting Budapest, one of the first checkboxes to tick is having a quick preview of the multitude of landmarks in the city. The cruise with Duna Bella offers just that: this 1 hour 10-minute daytime cruise showcases all the major sights along the river. The southernmost point is marked by the pillars of Liberty Bridge , and the northernmost one is at Árpád Bridge – between the two, you’ll get to see monuments like the Parliament , the Buda Castle , the Citadel, and much more. To get the most out of the trip, the cruise offers audio guides in 30 languages and free Wi-Fi onboard. What’s even better is that the price includes a glass of drink of your choice plus a glass of Duna Bella lemonade.

If you’d like to bring the most out of your cruise, you can upgrade to the “Plus” package. This will allow you to explore Margaret Island: you’ll get discounts from various services (bike rental, restaurants, thermal spa to name a few) before hopping back on the boat.

Budapest by night: Duna Legenda

Duna Legenda sets off on almost the same route as Duna Bella with a twist: the cruise starts only after sunset. This way you can marvel at the spectacular sight of Budapest by night while enjoying all the perks the daytime cruise offers.

Candlelight dinner cruise

You might think it’d be hard to up the ante at this point, but there’s a way to upgrade your nighttime cruise. The candlelight dinner package almost triples the cruise’s duration, plus you’ll get a welcome drink upon arrival and then dine as you float by the various monuments of the capital. The dinner is both available with a la carte and kids’ menu options.

Candlelight dinner with Budapest by night as a backdrop

First things first, none of Legenda’s cruises are available in the months between January and April. That being said, there are several boats to catch between May and December, with summer months being the busiest (11 cruises per day). The timetable is subject to change, so be sure you visit their website before adjusting your plans.

Basic cruises like Duna Bella or Legenda are reasonably priced: tickets for adults cost between 4500-6300 HUF (15-20€). Dining aboard is a bit pricier, though: a candlelight dinner will cost you 23900 HUF (or 70€), although the same cruise for kids is a bit cheaper (17000 HUF or 55€). As prices might change over time, just double-check Legenda’s pricing list for the latest updates.

Getting there

Finding the pier from which Legenda’s boats depart really isn’t a big deal: the docks are a 5-minute walk from Vörösmarty tér. Once you get to the Danube bank, just look for pier 7 and the blue Legenda logo. All cruises are closed loops, so you get off exactly where you board.

Other cruises

Legenda isn’t the only company offering cruises on the Danube: one excellent alternative would be the Hop on-Hop off boat trip . It takes you on the same route, plus, since it primarily functions as a sightseeing bus tour, you’ll get to roam around parts of the city that are beyond reach for a boat.

Danube Legend River Boat Cruise in Budapest

My aunt, three cousins, and I took a Legenda night cruise in Budapest on the Danube Legend, and we enjoyed the trip very much. We cruised on a Tuesday evening at the beginning of March, and the boat was practically deserted! Although it was quite brisk outside, the boat was warm and cozy inside, as it is an enclosed boat. The staff spoke English very well, and they were friendly and quite pleasant. The trip lasted for approximately one hour. It was fantastic to see the fantastic landmarks of Budapest at night. In addition, headphones were provided so we could listen to a wonderful commentary and watch a video on a TV screen about the sights we were passing. We were also offered a complimentary glass of champagne, wine, beer, soft drink, or mineral water during the cruise. The champagne was special treat! The cruise cost 5500 forints for each person, which came to about $24.00 US/Canadian. I thought this was a bit pricey compared to the deals we were used to finding in Budapest, but it was well worth the money. You can use Master Card and Visa to pay for your ticket at the booth. I would highly recommend this night cruise. Afterwards, I would suggest strolling along the Danube to see all of the sights again from the shoreline.

danube legend cruise

This was one of the highlights of our Budapest visit. We took the one hour evening cruise on Legenda which included a free drink. The night we cruised there was a firework display which was a surprise and quite entertaining. It was very relaxing and it was a wonderful way to get beautiful photos of the Castle, Parliament, Fisherman's Bastion, Gellert Hill, etc. at night. Just spectacular and all in an hour!

On the last night of our holiday we booked a candlelit dinner cruise on the Danube. We chose the exclusive package about £46 per person to include a welcome drink, four course a la carte meal, this was better value than the cruise and a la carte meal (pay as you go ) about £23 per person. For our main course we choise fillet of beef and duck breast both cooked to perfection. A cruise on the Danube is a must for any tourist, i would recommend the night cruise as the water front and buildings are illuminated.A really wonderful way to finish our holiday.

My wife and I had only one night in Budapest so we decided to make the most of it and splurge for the Legenda Dinner Cruise. It was definitely not cheap (around 31000 HUF, or nearly $150 USD), but was worth it for what is most likely a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us. We arrived early after wandering the streets of Budapest, hoping the boat would be open for seating. Luckily for us it was. We were told when making our reservation that sitting by the window was not possible, but there was a large group of people sitting directly across from us, so their seating arrangements made it so we had a table for two right next to the window. The one drink included in the price is a choice of two house wines, juice, Pepsi, etc. if you want another type of wine or refills, you have to pay extra. There is a selection of food that is suitable for nearly every palate. I had a scallop as the first course, followed by pumpkin cream soup, roasted pork tenderloin and panna cotta for dessert. My wife had a shrimp starter, pumpkin soup, duck breast and sponge pudding. Everything we ordered was outstanding, and the servers are simply amazing and work very hard to keep up with the demands of such a large group. After having several drinks, several older couples got up and danced to the live music to everyone's entertainment. Also, the views of Budapest from the river at night are breathtaking. The only drawbacks are the staff has no way of controlling unruly children who ran amok between tables while their parents watched, seemingly amused by their children's bad dinner behavior. Also, the boat is not heated very well, if at all. After a while, the body heat of the approximately 50 people on board fogs up the windows and obscures the otherwise romantic views.

I choose this dinner cruise based on the good impression that I got from the positive reviews here. I was surely not disappointed and my opinion is that Legenda deserves the money they are asking for it. I have experienced the same kind of program in Paris and my opinion is that this one is much better! The boat is very comfortable and replicates a modern and stylish dinning room, with a bar counter in the rear end. Glass roof and windows allow you to have ravishing views of Budapest. Of course the food is not “gourmet style” but, considering the circumstances, I must say that it was fine! Everything is cooked aboard, you are nicely served at your place (no buffet stuff…) and the wine list is varied enough and not too much overpriced. A free welcome drink was offered at our table. I know that some reviews point that the music is not typically Hungarian, which is true, but it was a very smooth and nice ambience music. Overall I definitely recommend this experience if you are for the first time in Budapest!

This was a good take for tired feet at the end of a day of touring. The dinner was elegant, delicious with a flare of presentation. The music was tasteful and calming. The sites along the Danube are romantically lite like Paris and there are open windows and outdoor patios to catch the breeze plus even the ceiling of the dining room is glass to catch the views.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.

Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.

austria, vienna, hofburg, michaelplatz

Is a Danube river cruise worth it?

Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.

On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.

What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?

One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).

Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.

Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.

And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.

the largest medicinal bath in europe, the szechenyi thermal bath dates from the late 19th century

Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?

Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.

How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?

Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.

Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.

River Cruise Guide for Seniors Along the Danube and Rhine

W elcome to our guide on river cruising, specially designed for seniors who love to travel! River cruises are a great way for seniors to see beautiful places comfortably and easily. They are perfect if you don’t like the trouble of packing and unpacking a lot. In this guide, we talk about two famous European rivers: the Danube and the Rhine. These cruises for seniors will show you lovely views and old cities and make sure you’re comfortable the whole time. Whether you travel a lot or this is your first cruise, this guide will show you why river cruises are great for seniors. Sit back, relax, and join us as we explore why a Danube and Rhine river cruise is a wonderful choice for seniors.

Why Choose a River Cruise for Seniors?

For seniors looking for a memorable travel experience, river cruises are an excellent choice. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises offer a more intimate and relaxed journey. They typically host fewer passengers, which means more personal attention and less crowding. This is especially appealing to seniors who value comfort and a peaceful environment.

One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the scenic and gentle nature of the journey. These cruises glide along historic waterways, offering stunning views of landscapes, quaint villages, and iconic cities. The slower pace of river cruising is perfect for seniors who want to enjoy their travel without feeling rushed. It’s an effortless way to see multiple destinations while enjoying the luxury of staying in one place.

Moreover, river cruises are known for their accessibility. The smaller size of river ships means easier navigation for seniors, with fewer stairs and more convenient access to all areas of the vessel. This accessibility extends to shore excursions as well, which are often tailored to be senior-friendly.

Finally, river cruises provide an enriching cultural experience. From onboard lectures about local history and culture to excursions that take you into the heart of each destination, these cruises offer a deeper understanding and appreciation of the places visited. It’s not just a journey; it’s an immersive cultural experience, making it an ideal choice for seniors eager to explore and learn.

River cruises offer seniors a comfortable, scenic, and culturally rich travel experience perfectly suited to their pace and interests.

Exploring the Danube River

The Danube River, Europe’s second-longest river, is a treasure trove of experiences for senior travelers. Flowing through ten countries, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical richness, and cultural diversity. A cruise along the Danube is not just a journey through a scenic waterway; it’s a passage through centuries of history and culture.

For seniors embarking on a Danube River cruise, the experience begins with the breathtaking landscapes. The river meanders through rolling hills, vineyards, and dramatic cliffs, offering ever-changing vistas that are easily enjoyed from the comfort of the ship. This serene setting is perfect for those who wish to relax and soak in the natural beauty of a tranquil environment.

As the cruise progresses, a series of enchanting cities and towns unfold along the banks.

Vienna , the city of music, enchants with its imperial architecture and classical concerts – a treat for seniors who appreciate the finer arts.

In Budapest , the stunning Hungarian capital split by the river, you can witness the majestic Parliament building, especially captivating when lit up at night. Bratislava, with its charming old town and laid-back atmosphere, offers a quieter but equally rewarding experience.

For history enthusiasts, the Danube River cruise is a journey back in time. Visit ancient fortresses like Devin Castle near Bratislava, or explore the Roman ruins in Viminacium, near Belgrade. Each site tells a story that enriches the travel experience.

The Danube also presents a culinary journey. Seniors can indulge in local flavors, tasting dishes that have been perfected over generations. From the hearty goulash of Hungary to Austria’s famous pastries, each region offers its own culinary delights. Additionally, wine lovers will appreciate the fine wines produced in the Wachau Valley, renowned for its vineyards.

Each stop along the Danube offers leisurely-paced excursions, ensuring senior travelers can explore comfortably at their own pace. These excursions often include guided tours with knowledgeable guides who provide insights into the local history and culture, making the experience both enjoyable and educational.

The Danube River cruise for seniors is a splendid blend of natural beauty, historical exploration, and cultural immersion. It’s a journey that satisfies the soul and sparks the imagination, leaving travelers with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Exploring the Rhine River

A cruise along the Rhine River is a journey through the heart of Europe, offering senior travelers an enchanting mix of fairy-tale landscapes, medieval castles, and vibrant cultural centers. Stretching from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, the Rhine passes through a variety of stunning landscapes and historic cities, making it a prime destination for a leisurely and enriching cruise experience.

As seniors embark on a Rhine River cruise, they are greeted by the picturesque beauty of the river’s banks. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is particularly breathtaking with its steep vineyards, quaint villages, and numerous castles perched on hillsides. This section, often referred to as the Romantic Rhine truly captures the essence of a storybook in Europe.

The cities along the Rhine are equally captivating. Cologne, with its iconic twin-spired cathedral, is a must-visit for its rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Strasbourg, in the Alsace region, is enchanted with its blend of French and German cultures, showcased in its architecture, cuisine, and unique Alsatian wines. Basel, known for its art and culture, offers a more laid-back experience, ideal for seniors who appreciate the quieter side of city life.

Historical exploration is a significant aspect of the Rhine cruise. The region is dotted with castles and fortresses that date back to the Middle Ages, like the imposing Marksburg Castle and the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. These sites provide a window into the past and are often accompanied by fascinating stories and legends.

The Rhine also offers a culinary journey that appeals to senior travelers. From the hearty German cuisine and world-class Rieslings to the delicate flavors of Alsace, each region along the river offers its own gastronomic delights. Many cruises include onboard tastings and themed dinners, providing a taste of local flavors in a comfortable setting.

Moreover, the pace of a Rhine cruise is particularly suitable for seniors. With options for leisurely strolls in port towns and relaxed sightseeing tours, travelers can explore at a comfortable pace. The accessibility of these tours ensures that the beauty and culture of the Rhine are easily enjoyed by all.

In summary, a Rhine River cruise presents a wonderful combination of scenic beauty, historical exploration, and cultural immersion. It’s an ideal choice for senior travelers seeking a relaxing yet enriching European adventure.

8 Must-Haves for Your River Cruise

Embarking on a river cruise, especially for seniors, calls for thoughtful preparation to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Here are some must-haves that you should consider packing for your Danube or Rhine river cruise:

  • Comfortable Footwear: As you’ll likely be exploring a lot during port stops, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Opt for sturdy, non-slip shoes that can handle cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces.
  • Layered Clothing: Weather can be unpredictable, especially when cruising along European rivers. Pack lightweight, layered clothing that can easily be added or removed. Include a waterproof jacket for unexpected rain showers.
  • Binoculars : To fully appreciate the scenic vistas along the rivers, a pair of binoculars is a great accessory. They’re perfect for viewing architectural details of distant castles or spotting wildlife along the riverbanks.
  • Medications and Health Supplies: Apart from your prescription medications, bring along basic health supplies like pain relievers, band-aids, and any daily vitamins. Also, consider seasickness remedies if you’re prone to motion sickness, though river cruises are generally very smooth.
  • Portable Power Bank: A power bank is handy for long days out when you might need to charge your phone or camera.
  • Travel Documents and Currency: Keep your passport, travel insurance information, and any necessary visas easily accessible. Also, carry some local currency for small purchases ashore, as some smaller shops may not accept credit cards.
  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, sunhat, and sunscreen are crucial, especially during the summer months, to protect against the sun’s rays while you’re enjoying the deck or on excursions.
  • Camera : Don’t forget your camera or smartphone to capture memorable landscapes and historic sights.

Packing these essentials will help ensure that your river cruise experience is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, letting you focus on the beauty and culture of the Danube and Rhine rivers.

Choosing the Right Cruise for Seniors

Selecting the right river cruise is key to ensuring a fulfilling and comfortable experience, especially for senior travelers. When considering a cruise along the Danube or Rhine, there are several factors to keep in mind:

Cruise Line and Ship Size:

Different cruise lines cater to varying preferences and styles. Some offer a more luxurious experience, while others focus on cultural immersion. Smaller ships often provide a more intimate and personalized experience, which can be ideal for seniors seeking a relaxed pace and easy accessibility.

Cabin Comfort and Accessibility:

Consider the layout and facilities of the cabins. For seniors, it’s important to choose a cabin that is easily accessible, preferably without many stairs. Some ships offer cabins specifically designed for seniors or those with mobility issues, featuring wider doorways and walk-in showers.

Itinerary and Duration:

Look at the itinerary closely. Some cruises might be more port-intensive, with daily stops and excursions, while others offer more days at sea for relaxation. Depending on your stamina and interest, choose an itinerary that balances sightseeing with downtime. Duration is also a key consideration – shorter cruises might be a better fit for those who tire easily.

Pace of Activities:

Check the type and pace of activities offered. Many river cruises offer a range of excursion options, from leisurely walking tours to more active adventures. Ensure that there are activities suited to your comfort level and interests.

Medical Facilities and Services:

Confirm the availability of medical services onboard. While river cruises are generally safe, having medical support readily available provides peace of mind, especially for those with health concerns.

Dining Options:

Consider the dining arrangements. Look for cruises that offer flexible dining times and a variety of meal options, catering to different dietary needs and preferences.

Reviews and Recommendations:

Finally, read reviews and seek recommendations from other senior travelers. Personal experiences can provide valuable insights into what to expect and help you make an informed decision.

Senior travelers can choose a river cruise that not only meets their needs but also provides an enriching and enjoyable experience along the Danube and Rhine rivers considering these factors.

Making the Most of Your River Cruise Experience

To truly enjoy your Danube or Rhine river cruise, embrace every moment. Engage with fellow travelers and share stories; these interactions often enhance the travel experience. Participate in onboard activities and attend educational talks to deepen your understanding of the regions you’re visiting.

Don’t hesitate to spend some quiet time on the deck, soaking in the scenic landscapes and peaceful ambiance of the river. Remember, the beauty of a river cruise lies not just in the destinations but in the journey itself. So, relax, stay present, and savor the unique experiences your river cruise offers.

A river cruise along the Danube or Rhine offers seniors a wonderful blend of comfort, adventure, and cultural enrichment. It’s a chance to explore Europe’s heart in a way that’s both relaxing and engaging. So, embark on this journey and create memories that will last a lifetime. Book a river cruise .
