10 Happy Planner Decorating Tips For Beginners

planner decorated with stickers and pink spiral; 10 happy planner decorating tips

If you’re new to decorating your planner it may seem a little odd at first, but it’s a great creative outlet! Plus it’s functional because it’s something you can actually use on a daily basis.

So today I want to share with you 10 Happy Planner decorating tips for beginners.

If you love these tips, see more Planner Decoration Ideas to make your planner look pretty and stunning!

planner decorated with stickers and pink spiral; 10 happy planner decorating tips

Part of the mission of this blog is to help people achieve their goals. And part of that includes planning. Once you’ve organized your thoughts and ideas so that you have a clear picture of what you want, then its time to plan.

You need to know what your big goals are so you can break them down step by step . Decide how long you want to work on each step then write it into your planner. Work towards finishing each step, and one by one you will make it to your big goal.

Use your planner for what it is meant to be, a system to keep your life organized. At the same time, you can also use it to be creative and decorate it so that it inspires you. All of this together will help you see the big picture and work towards making your goals a reality.

Ok, so on to the fun stuff…

  • Decorate first. Decorate your pages first before you write anything down. You may want to change some things up from what’s on the page, so get everything the way you want it before you start writing. But be sure you leave room to actually write your plans down. That’s the whole point of having a planner in the first place, right?
  • Stickers, stickers, and more stickers. There are so many different stickers you can use to decorate your planner. You can use any stickers you like, but the ones made by MAMBI actually fit in the boxes of the Happy Planner. You can layer stickers, or cut them to fit inside the edges of the boxes. Add floral stickers to the edges of the pages, too.
  • Change up the boxes to fit your needs. You can cover the titles in the boxes with different stickers. For instance, the dashboard layout comes with boxes that include things like errands, calls/emails, and things to buy. But if those are not things you need in your planner, just cover them up with blank stickers and write in what you want.
  • Use themes for the month or week. If you’re new to decorating your planner you may not have your own style yet, and that’s ok! It will come once you’ve done it a few times. For a little design inspiration, you can try decorating using a theme for the week or month. Do a monochromatic spread using one color or a holiday spread. Check out my post on monthly theme ideas to help decorate your planner.
  • Add quotes to fill up whitespace. Once you’ve set up your pages the way you like and placed your stickers, you can fill up any blank space by writing in your favorite quote, scripture, or something else that inspires you. Check out my post of over 50 motivational quotes to add to your planner.
  • Add washi tape. Use thin washi tape under undated boxes, or at the bottom of pages, or to outline boxes. It fits perfectly in the spaces.
  • Use Pilot Frixion erasable gel pens. These fine point pens write smoothly and show up bright on paper. AND the best part is they’re erasable! So write it over as many times as you need to. However, the ink might disappear if it gets too hot, like if you leave your planner in the car. But, if you need the information, wrap your planner in plastic wrap and put it in the freezer until the ink comes back.
  • Cover up boxes you don’t need. Use the Create 365 box punch to cut out rectangles that fit perfectly into the boxes. Pick out some gorgeous scrapbook paper that matches to add a pretty touch to your spread.
  • Go rogue. Create your own layouts using blank grid paper and stickers. There are so many different options from boxes, months, and numbers. Plus all the stickers you can think of to make your own layout.
  • Get inspired. Get your design inspiration from other planners. Search for Happy Planner on Instagram or watch videos on YouTube to get your creativity flowing!
  • Bonus! Join the Simple Modern Mom Resource Library to get access to all of our free Happy Planner printables. Grab a disc bound hole punch like this one and add any printable to your planner. Get access here!

Your planner can be whatever you want it to be! Make it personal, creative, and functional. Use these planner decorating tips to start your journey and have fun at the same time!

How To Plan The Perfect Princess Party with Decorating Ideas

Best Princess Party Decorating Ideas

Every part is crucial in making this dreamy idea come alive, from the guests’ entry into the event venue to the beautiful memories they take home.

Does this sound stressful? No worries – I’m here to help make this feel fun and simple.

As you might know, I am a bestselling wellness author with about 2 million books sold globally.

Plus I founded a groundbreaking video course called The Anxiety Cure.

I love sharing tools to help people live their happiest and and most fulfilling lives.

With this mind, I created this article all about how to plan the perfect princess party where dreams become reality.

Creating Splendid Decorations

Entrances which inspire awe.

Start your guests’ journey with an entrance reminiscent of magical tales. Create a path decorated with delicate fairy lights, leading to a door enhanced by drapes in soft pastels. Invite everyone into a world where fairy tales genuinely exist.

Themed balloons with characters add charm, setting the stage for a memorable royal entry. It is more convenient to order such balloons on site , which will significantly improve the chances of choosing precisely what is needed.

Table Settings Fit for Royalty

The dining area is at the heart of our faux castle, where regal table settings take center stage. Envision tables covered with plush cloth in rich hues, decked with gold dishes and crystal glasses that glimmer under the warm chandelier light. Table accents like roses in glass domes or carriage figurines lift the dining experience, making every guest feel like a king or a queen.

Touches of Fairytale Bliss

No princess party is complete without delightful elements that add layers of charm. Picture walls decorated with banners representing mythical kingdoms or soft lights that create a dreamy aura. Small touches like slipper-shaped card holders or napkin rings fashioned as tiaras create smiles and awe, narrating a story of sophistication and elegance.

Fun-filled Activities and Extras

Creative kingdoms.

Get the young guests involved with activities that allow them to express their creativity. They can design their crowns, wands, and shields with glitter, jewels, and vibrant markers. This engaging station will entertain them and kindle their imagination, allowing every child to personalize their costume for the day’s fun.

Photo Booth with Magical Touch

Eternalize the magical moments of the day at a fantastical Photo Booth. Decorate this corner with fairy-tale-centric fairytale backdrops like a castle, an enchanted forest, or a sky filled with stars. Provide accessories like princess crowns, capes, and magic wands, inviting guests to be their favorite characters and take a souvenir of the magic.

Designing the ideal princess party involves mixing creativity with attention to detail. By focusing on creating a smooth experience, from stunning decorations to themed activities, you pull guests into a world where fairy tales are not just stories but real for a day. It’s all about creating a party where every second overflows with magic, and every detail forms a part of an unforgettable adventure.

Easy Tips for Planning a Budget-Friendly Princess Party

  • Summoning a world of wonder doesn’t need to empty your wallet.
  • Start by choosing key spots to invest in, like the doorway and table settings. These elements will help set the scene for the party.
  • Using low-cost decorations such as homemade banners, paper crafts, and balloons can fill the room with color and fun without costing an arm and a leg. You can also check out thrift stores to find unique items like vintage trays or fabric to add a royal touch for less. Remember, the natural charm is in the details and the creative way they’re tied together, not in the price.
  • The best way to have a stress-free party is to plan. Make a to-do list early to ensure everything is noticed, from sending invites to writing thank-you notes. Think wisely about when to hold your party.
  • Hosting a mid-afternoon bash can reduce the need for a full meal, allowing for themed snacks and goodies instead. Use digital platforms to collect RSVPs, making it easy to keep an eye on your guest list.
  • Finally, consider getting help from friends or family members on the day of the party to supervise activities and ensure all goes as planned.

Creating a memorable princess party is a journey of creativity, organization, and, most importantly, fun. By putting some extra thought and magic into every part of the celebration, you build not just a party but a special memory for your little princess and her friends.

The real heart of any celebration is the joy and laughter shared. With these handy tips and a little sprinkle of imagination, you’re well on your way to a day brimming with magic, wonder, and festive celebration.

Vintage or antique silverware is a cherished and elegant addition to any dining experience. These exquisite pieces of cutlery, often made from sterling silver or silver-plated materials, carry a sense of history and craftsmanship. From intricately designed patterns to the weight and feel of each utensil, vintage silverware captures the essence of a bygone era.

Vintage Silverware in Box.

“Vintage” typically refers to items at least 20 years old, while “antique” usually applies to items over 100 years old. Vintage silverware encompasses various styles, patterns, and origins, each with its unique story.

One of the most well-known types of vintage silverware is sterling silver. It is renowned for its durability, luster, and ability to be intricately crafted. Sterling silverware often bears hallmarks or stamps indicating its silver content and the maker’s mark, providing valuable information about its origin and authenticity.

Vintage Sterling Silverware Collections

I have two favorite sterling silverware collections that I enjoy decorating with so very much. One I inherited, and the other I thrifted.

My favorite is the vintage sterling silverware set that I inherited from my parents. It was given to them approximately 70 years ago as a wedding present. My mother collected and added to the original collection over the years. I treasure it dearly and have often shared it on my table settings. As you can see from the organization in the box, we use it quite regularly.

Pro Tip: To prevent tarnishing, return sterling silverware to an airtight box when not in use. That is why most sterling silverware sets come with a storage box.

My second vintage sterling silverware collection was found at Vintage Market Days last year. It is a set from the “Order of the Eastern Star.” You may learn and see more in the Order of the Eastern Star Amidst This Vintage Market Haul post.

I recently picked up more “OES” vintage silverware to add to my collection; see more in this Vintage Marketplace: Infinite Unique Decor post.

I use my sterling silverware as our everyday cutlery—my mother did, too. I even throw it into the dishwasher daily. And I polish it about every couple of years.

Vintage sterling silverware is not as high maintenance as one may believe.

Mix and Match

Have you ever considered mixing and matching vintage silverware patterns for a charming, eclectic table setting look? If you like this style, it will make the thrill of collecting various flatware patterns more fun and creative for you.

I mostly use my sterling silverware patterns on my tables. Here are a few table settings you may enjoy:

The best way to polish vintage sterling silverware is to gather the necessary supplies:

Lay the soft cloth on a clean, flat surface and place the silverware on it. Apply a small amount of silver polishing cream or polish onto the cloth and gently rub it onto the silverware using back-and-forth motions, covering all areas, including handles and patterns.

A soft-bristle toothbrush dipped in polish can be used for intricate patterns or hard-to-reach areas. Rinse the silverware under running water to remove excess polish, then pat dry with a soft cloth.

Finally, use a clean portion of the cloth to buff and shine the silverware in circular motions. Inspect for any remaining tarnished areas and repeat the process if necessary. Proper storage in a dry, tarnish-resistant box, cloth, or pouch is recommended to minimize future tarnishing.

There are many different sterling silverware polish creams available today. I have found that they all work equally well.

Thrifting with the Gals

It’s the third Thursday of the month, and that means it’s time for  Thrifting with the Gals . The time when the gals and I all get together to share our favorite monthly thrifted finds with you, along with a few tips and tricks in vintage home decorating.

We are excited to welcome back our guest host, Cindy of County Road 407 , this month. Cindy shares How to Mix Charming Old Finds with New Pieces in Home Decor , which I know you will love!

What Can You Do With Old Silverware?

There are so many things you can do with vintage silverware. Although this post isn’t about specific craft projects but ways to decorate with vintage silverware, cutlery, and flatware in your home, I thought mentioning a few crafty ideas would also be helpful.

With a little creativity, you can transform your vintage silverware into functional and decorative pieces that add a touch of charm to your home or garden.

  • Jewelry: Transform vintage silverware into unique and stylish jewelry pieces. Forks and spoons can be bent and shaped to create bracelets, rings, pendants, and earrings. You can also add beads, gemstones, or other embellishments to personalize the jewelry. My friend, KariAnne of Thistlewood Farms , shares a Silver Spoon Bracelet tutorial you may enjoy.
  • Wall Art: Use vintage silverware to create decorative wall art. Arrange the utensils in interesting patterns or shapes and mount them on a wooden board or frame. You can paint or distress the silverware for a vintage or rustic look.
  • Garden Markers: Engrave or attach labels to the handles of old silverware to create charming garden markers. Use them to identify different plants or herbs in your garden.
  • Wind Chimes: String old silverware with a fishing line or twine to make a unique wind chime. Hang it in your garden or on your porch, and enjoy the soothing sounds as the utensils gently clink together in the breeze.
  • Napkin Rings: Bend the handles of old spoons or forks to create stylish napkin rings. You can leave them as is or add decorative elements like beads or ribbon.
  • Keychains: Attach a small piece of silverware to a keyring to create a one-of-a-kind keychain. This can be a practical and decorative way to use old silverware.
  • Drawer Pulls: Replace conventional drawer pulls with vintage silverware handles. Attach the utensils to your drawers and cabinets using screws or adhesive.
  • Coat Hooks: Mount old silverware on wood or a wall to create unique coat hooks. Bend the utensils to form hooks and attach them securely.
  • Spoon Hooks: Bend the handles of old spoons to create hooks. These can hang kitchen towels, aprons, or other lightweight items.

Look for vintage cutlery boxes in your thrifting travels, too. I found this cute red one while I was out antiquing in Maine this winter with Molly in Maine . See more in the Antiquing 101: A Guide From the Trail post. I adore using it as a silverware carrier with our porch tables.

Thrifted Vintage Cutlery

Last week, while in Maine, I found a 15-piece set of vintage Bakelite cutlery made by Sheffield for $20. It’s in such a beautiful condition that it inspired today’s blog post. Over the past few years, I have noticed vintage silverware trending everywhere. And if you’re lucky, you can find it affordably, too.

Vintage Wooden Cutlery Set in Box.

Sheffield cutlery refers to cutlery (knives, forks, spoons, etc.) made in Sheffield, England. The company has a long history of producing high-quality cutlery, dating back to the 14th century. The city became renowned for its skilled craftsmen, who produced exceptional blades and utensils.

Sheffield Cutlery is known for its craftsmanship, precision, and durability. The cutlery is often made from stainless steel or silver and is highly regarded for its sharpness, balance, and elegant designs.

Vintage Wooden Cutlery in Country Style Kitchen

Today, Sheffield continues to be a hub for cutlery production, and many traditional manufacturers and craftsmen still operate in the city. The Sheffield Cutlery Museum is a popular attraction where visitors can learn about the history and craftsmanship of Sheffield Cutlery.

This cutlery set will remain in the kitchen at our home in Maine. After setting this pink table setting during our stay, I was inspired to pull out one of my mother’s pewter pitchers to house and display this new thrifted vintage Sheffield cutlery set, which complements the wooden counters.

Vintage Wooden Cutlery in Country Style Kitchen

Next to sterling silverware, I also love collecting vintage wooden-like handle cutlery. Its rustic yet elegant charm adds a beautiful texture to all dining settings. But they’re not wooden handles; it’s Bakelite.

Are you familiar with Bakelite?

Bakelite is a type of synthetic resin that was developed in the early 20th century. It was the first synthetic plastic material and became widely used for various applications. One of the key properties of Bakelite is its ability to be molded and shaped when heated, and once cooled, it retains its shape. This characteristic made Bakelite a popular material for manufacturing various products, including electrical insulators, automotive parts, radios, telephones, kitchenware, jewelry, and more.

Bakelite is known for its distinctive appearance. It has a smooth and shiny surface and is available in various colors, including black, brown, red, and green. Bakelite was highly popular during its heyday due to its affordability, versatility, and durability. However, its use declined in the mid-20th century with the advent of newer and more advanced plastics.

Today, Bakelite is still valued by collectors and enthusiasts for its historical significance and unique aesthetic. Vintage Bakelite items, such as jewelry and kitchenware, are sought after by those who appreciate its retro charm.

Here is another set of vintage silverware that I picked up at an antique shop for $10 a bundle.

Just look at their fabulous color and rustic charm.

How many of you have vintage lobster utensils?

I have shared our lobster utensils many times on the blog, but I don’t know how often I mention that they are vintage, used by my mother as she grew up in Coastal Maine.

My grandfather was a lobsterman and owned a lobster pound. Learn more in the Coastal Maine Heritage – Embracing My Roots post.

Lobsters are a way of life in Maine, not just a delicacy. So, having a set of my mother’s and, in retrospect, my grandmother’s lobster utensils is a treasure. Vintage silverware isn’t just about the fork, knife, and spoon. It is a gift from years of love and family table conversations.

Mason Jars, Bows, Demi-Tray

Mason jars and various collected bottles are charming storage display options for outdoor and indoor table settings. They are also ideal for buffet, grazing, or kitchen counter entertaining. Add a bow or a ribbon to elevate their farmhouse-cottage appeal.

Do you know what that silver piece is in the center of the vintage blue dish?

It is a Demi-Tray from my mother’s vintage silverware collection. Have you ever seen these before? They are clip-on dinnerware ashtrays for 1950s dinner parties. A Demi-Tray is an ashtray for every after-dinner smoker. I think they are so neat, so “Mad Men.”

14 Fish Tank Decoration Ideas With Up-cycled Items

You can buy the standard sunken ship or plastic undersea plants at any pet shop, but if you want to give your fish tank a unique look, shop for decorations around your own home. There are tons of great fish tank decorations using everyday items, from your kids' toys to the stuff in your china cabinet, but there are some safety concerns to be aware of during your search. Try some of the awesome options listed while being aware of how to keep your fish healthy and happy.

Lego Your Heart Out

Love that insanely awesome model of the Death Star? What about that replica of Hogwarts Castle that took you weeks to complete? Legos can be perfect aquarium decorations, as long as you have the space.

You can set up entire Lego scenes in the tank if you feel like getting super creative. Take a stroll through the Lego website to see the sets that are available. Here are some really cool ideas:

Quick Tip Thoroughly clean your Lego creations before using them and every time you clean out the tank.

Make an Underwater Lego Zoo

Use Lego animals and bricks to make a zoo for the fish to enjoy.

An Underwater Atlantis

With Aquaman 2 out, there's no better time to make your own underwater Atlantis out of Legos (P.S.: The movie is fantastic!). You can make ancient ruins, temples, and treasure chests. And, to add some extra spark, consider some super-neat mythical sea creatures.

Build a Fish House

Create a literal home for your fish by building a house and filling it with Lego furniture and appliances.

Make an Undersea Universe

Dive into a splash of fun by using a kaleidoscope of bright Lego bricks to build your very own coral reef! Jazz it up with sea plants, starfish, and a whole crew of Lego marine critters to bring your reef to life. It's like you have a real-life Minecraft fish tank!

Aquarium Under Construction

Make some Lego construction vehicles and set up Lego people to work on the construction inside the tank.

Need to Know Lego has stringent safety standards about the plastics they use in their toy bricks, making them a good choice for putting in a fish tank. Avoid using glue with the blocks, as this can contaminate your fish's water. And be sure to only use the actual Lego brand. These safety standards don't apply to generic brands.

Write a Message in a Bottle

There's nothing quite as mysterious and interesting as a message in a bottle. You can add a floating bottle to your fish tank with a few things you have around the house. This idea will work in almost any size tank.

To keep your bottle floating upright, place a couple of marbles or another weight at the bottom to make it heavier than the top. Experiment with different weights since the balance will be different for every bottle.

Helpful Hack For a fun gift, write a love note or special message on a piece of paper and put it in the bottle so the note shows through the glass.

An Underwater Bottle Terrarium

Inside clear bottles, arrange small aquatic plants or moss to create miniature underwater terrariums. They offer an aesthetic appeal and a unique twist to traditional plant setups.

An Old-World Appearance

Choose an antique bottle or other ornate, interesting-looking example to give the whole decoration a really old-world feel.

Add Pops of Color

Consider a colored glass bottle for a pop of red, green, or bright blue.

Need to Know For a fun gift, write a love note or special message on a piece of paper and put it in the bottle so the note shows through the glass.

Tea for Two...Fish

If you have some pretty china you never use, why not set up a tea party inside the tank ? You can use your favorite pattern or just something you inherited from Grandma. Either way, it's an adorable, totally unexpected choice for aquarium decor.

Quick Tip Avoid delicate finishes that might flake off, like gold or silver leaf on the edges of cups or saucers.

Fancy Feelings

Put a lace tablecloth under the tank to create the fancy feeling from the outside.

Make a Luxurious Shipwreck

Tip one teacup on its side as if it has gradually settled to the ocean floor from a luxurious passenger ship.

Grab a Little Teapot

Place a whole teapot inside the tank, making sure there's plenty of room for the fish to swim in and out of it.

Have a Tea Party

Use a child's tea set for a miniature version of the tea party, making sure you have enough settings for each of your fish friends, of course.

Need to Know Fishkeeping World  notes that you should only use food-safe ceramics in your fish tank. Since your china cabinet is full of food-safe dishes, you should have plenty of options.

"Fish" Everyone a Happy Holiday

The holidays are a great time to get creative with the decorations on your tank, especially if you have some extra holiday decor. You can do this for any holiday, from Halloween to Easter to Christmas.

Need to Know Anything found around the house could introduce bacteria into the tank. Look into how to disinfect it properly before adding it.

Make the Aquarium Ornamental for Christmas

Pick some plain, colored glass ornaments and remove the hanging hardware. Fill the ornaments with water and place them on the bottom of the tank.

Have Some Easter Fun

If you have food-safe holiday figurines, like glass Easter bunny-shaped salt and pepper shakers, put those in the tank.

Need to Know Avoid anything painted or sharp, even if it makes a cute holiday decoration. Similarly, consumable items are a bad idea.

Must-Know Safety for Fish Tank Decorations

If these ideas have sparked your creative side and you plan to wander your house looking for more, check out these tips first:

Beware of Chemicals

Make sure to use items that are safe and won't release any chemicals into the water. Steer clear of anything with paint, varnish, metal, or coatings that you're not sure about.

Cleaning Thoroughly

Clean all decorations thoroughly with hot water. Avoid soaps or detergents, as they can leave harmful residues. For tougher cleaning, use a mild bleach solution (10% bleach) and rinse thoroughly multiple times. Allow it to dry, then rinse once more to ensure all the residue is gone.

Steer Clear of Metal

Metals can corrode over time in water, releasing harmful substances. Stick to glass, ceramic, or plastic items that are known to be aquarium-safe.

Be Careful With the Size

Ensure the decoration is appropriately sized for your tank and won’t topple over or trap the fish. Heavier items should be placed directly on the bottom of the tank, not on a substrate that could shift.

Decor Ideas for Your Fish to Explore

Creatively decorating your aquarium doesn't have to break the bank. Look around your house to discover some unique decor items your fish will love to explore, and visitors will enjoy checking out. Before placing any items in your tank, do a little research to make sure they're safe, especially if they aren't listed above.
