Balancing Rock

Jabalpur city is the administrative headquarters of Jabalpur district, the second-most-populous district in the state. Jabalpur is famous for the marble rocks found on the banks of the Narmada in Bhedaghat. The city is also regarded as a major education centre in India and home to the terracotta cottage industry and Chanderi silk industry.

The Narmada River forms an important part of the city’s geography. It is also the primary source of water for the city and its neighbouring areas. Apart from Narmada, the Vanganga and Hiran rivers also flow through the city, adding to its natural beauty. The region is a treasure trove of naturally occurring rich mineral deposits like limestone, iron ore, bauxite, manganese. The rugged landscape with craggy hills and cliffs also gives rise to a host of torrential waterfalls that make for a stunning view.

Jabalpur

Legends say that the town is named after the sage Jabali, who was said to meditate on the banks of the Narmada. There is also a belief that the name of the city comes from the Arabic word, Jabal, meaning huge boulders, due to the huge marble rocks found on the river banks.

The earliest historical records of Jabalpur date back to the time of Ashoka, owing to relics found in Rupnath, about 48KM from the present city location. Jabalpur has been ruled by many dynasties including, but not limited to the Satavahana dynasty, Kalachuri dynasty, Gondwana rulers, Marathas, Mughals, and finally, the British East India Company, before the country’s independence. In the colonial era, the city was referred to as Jubbulpore. In 2006, the city’s municipal corporation renamed the city Jabalpur.

The long-standing legacy of the region has led to a host of interesting and iconic historical places in Jabalpur that make for the best sightseeing places in the city.

More on Jabalpur Travel

The marble empire, arts and culture, history of jabalpur - a journey back in time.

The city of Jabalpur has witnessed several historical events, memoirs in which transports a tourist back in time and is sure to fuel the explorer within. Jabalpur is said to be named after saint Jabali Rishi. In Arabic, the word Jabal means mountains. So there is a possibility that the name of the city is also derived from here. This city was the capital of Tripura Kingdom in the 10th century and was ruled by the Hayahya. Many relics from the reign of King Ashoka were discovered in here.

In the 16th century, the city was ruled by the Gonds and then taken over by the Marathas in the 17th century. The British defeated the Marathas in the 19th century and made Jabalpur the headquarter of Nerbudda territories. It also became the capital of Saugor which is the present-day Sagar District and Nerbudda District. After Independence, the cantonment in the city was dedicated to army training and a vehicle factory and a gun carriage factory were also established.

Once a part of the Gond empire, the history of Jabalpur, inspired by figures like Rani Durgavati, is strong evidence of the strength of Indian women. Jabalpur not only mesmerizes us through the beauty of the Kalachuri art and unique constructions like the Madan Mahal Fort but also reminds of the sacrifice of Mahatma Gandhi whose remains were immersed in the Narmada in Tilwara Ghat amidst pure marble on both sides.

In addition, the scenic view around the temple also attracts visitors. There are many public means of transport and private transport facilities available for those who wish to visit the temple.

12. Chausath Yogini Temple

Chausath Yogini Temple

Situated atop the hills, this 10 th century Chausath Yogini Temple is a glowing example of ancient architecture. Circular in shape with a diameter of 125-feet, the temple attracts worshippers in abundance. Images placed on its pedestals can be associated to three different periods – a particular type of images belongs to the Kushana Period, the other to post-Gupta Period, and the third set belongs to Kalachuri style that existed between 10 th century and 13 th century. Also, one needs to climb a whopping 108steep steps to reach the temple.

Chausath means the digit sixty-four in English and the name has a direct relation to the structure of the temple. There are exactly 64 carved figures of Yoginis, each one in her own designated shrine, skirting the interiors of the circular premises of the temple. As a bonus, the panoramic view of the mighty Narmada from the high open courtyard presents to you an endearing scene to be captured in the camera as well as to be remembered in the mind.

Once you reach the premises of the temple, you will realize the immense significance of the Yoga tantric beliefs. This is also the only place where you will find the grandest couple of Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati riding the symbolic Nandi Bull. The idols of Shiv-Parvati stand in the Gauri-Shankar Temple, which is in the centre of the temple. This is believed to have been built at a later time than the original temple with Yoginis.

From temples to marble mountains to lakes and dams, Jabalpur has a lot to offer to the discerning tourist. So, make sure you boom your stay in advance and plan a trip when the weather is pleasant.
