And he has had seven number one songs on the Billboard Country charts (including his signature, “Rose Colored Glasses”), has been a member of the Grand Old Opry since 1981, performed in nine Farm Aid concerts, and won the Academy Of Country Music’s “Best New Male Vocalist” Award in 1979.

In a phone interview to promote Sunday’s concert at Easton Area Middle School, Conlee is as down-to-earth as the “Common Man” featured in his song, who prefers a Chevrolet to a Mercedes, and “would rather chug-a-lug a mug of Budweiser beer than sip a crystal glass of wine.” He is far from being an “Urban Cowboy” poseur, although his career began around the time that film was released.

“It happened to coincide,” he says. “The movie came in 1980, and my first hit, “Rose Colored Glasses,’ came in 1978. Country had been in kind of a lull, and it picked things up.”

The logo on his Web site even pictures a pair of rose- colored glasses above his name, and his label is called Rose Colored Records. The title of that song might indicate happiness, but the words relate the common story of lost love, as the glasses serve to “show only the beauty, and hide all the truth.”

Love figures in the lyrics of many of Conlee’s hits.

It is in “Domestic Life,” where sometimes you land in the “Doghouse.” There is the yearning of “Lady Lay Down” and “What I Had With You.” It even figures in the hilarious “I Don’t Remember Loving You,” where the singer has gone insane from losing his sweetheart.

Before beginning his music career, Conlee was a mortician for six years. He was also a disk jockey. Surprisingly, he says in that job he played “a little bit of everything but country.” A move to Nashville to WLAC radio let him make a number of contacts and turn his music hobby into a full-time career.

Like many classic artists, Conlee is disenchanted with country radio stations that only feature newer musicians. “The older demographic has been ignored. They are caught up in reaching 18-to-24-year-olds.”

He also feels that “a lot of [record] people are too caught up in videos. They choose people who look good in a video and then look for material. Their priorities are wrong.”

However, Conlee is hopeful about alternatives, including satellite and Internet radio. “There are more and more classic country radio shows and stations, and they are doing very, very well. There is a hunger for that music.” He adds, “No matter what the format is, people always want to hear a hit.”

In 2004, Conlee released the gospel CD “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.” “It’s mostly old standards with four new gospel tunes,” he says. “I have always wanted to do a gospel album, and now I could do it since I have my own label.”

In the past, Conlee was discouraged from taking a new direction. “Having hits and everything, they don’t want to interrupt that flow.”

That CD also included Conlee’s single “They Also Serve,” a paean to military families who suffer the absence of their loved ones. Conlee’s son, John, was awarded a Purple Heart for service in Iraq.

Conlee is a strong supporter of the war effort, believing that a hasty withdrawal from Iraq would embolden enemies of the United States. In his shows he plays the video for “They Also Serve” when projection equipment is available; otherwise, he performs the song live.

Conlee plays about 60-80 shows a year in all kinds of venues — casinos, clubs, schools. “Live At Billy Bob’s Texas” (Smith Music Group, 1999) disc shows Conlee’s appeal in a rowdy, honky-tonk atmosphere, although he says the show in Easton might not be that different.

“The music will be the same,” he says of the show, in which he will be backed by guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. “Everybody will be more subdued and will be paying attention. We can be more conversational, talking more to the audience.”

In 2003, “Classics,” a greatest-hits compilation, came out on Conlee’s own label. For the sequel, “Classics II,” he plans to re-record some of his hits. “It will be a challenge to be true to the original,” adding, “my voice now is a little more mellow.”

Conlee’s latest, “Country Heart” (Varese Sarabande, 2006), is both an old and a new record, or as Conlee calls it, “new old stock.” The album was never released in the mid-’90s after it was completed.

“The single of “Doghouse’ was released, and then they shut down the label, which killed the single,” he says.

As for the future, Conlee says, “I don’t have it in me to retire. I’ll play as long as I am able, or until people no longer want to hear me.”

Country Legend John Conlee to Play Route 92 in Youngsville on July 20

Route 92 in Youngsville has just announced they'll be hosting a legendary country performer this summer as John Conlee is set to play on Thursday, July 20, 2023.

Dustin Sonnier will be the evening's opener. He'll get things started at 6:30 pm with a special acoustic set. John Conlee will take the stage at 9:00 pm.

Tickets are on sale now at Route92LiveMusic.com and they're $39 apiece. But, if you plan to go, you should get your tickets soon as this show will sell out.

Of course, almost everyone who enjoys classic country knows the distinct voice of Grand Ole Opry star John Conlee.

The 76-year-old from Versailles, Kentucky, has been on the country charts since 1978 when his signature tune "Rose Colored Glasses" peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

That first album ( Rose Colored Glasses ) spawned his first two No. 1 hits with "Lady Lay Down" and "Backside of Thirty".

Other No. 1 hits for Conlee include "Common Man," "I'm Only In It for the Love," "In My Eyes," "As Long as I'm Rockin' with You," and "Got My Heart Set on You."

He'll be playing all these hits and more on July 20th and we can't wait.

John Conlee

One of the most respected vocalists to emerge during the urban cowboy era, John Conlee was known for his superb taste in material and his distinctively melancholy voice. Conlee was born and raised on a tobacco farm in Versailles, KY, in 1946, and took up the guitar as a child, performing on local radio at age ten. He went on to sing with the town barbershop chorus, but didn’t initially pursue music as a career, instead becoming a licensed mortician. He also worked as a disc jockey at numerous area radio stations, and made important industry connections via that area when he moved to Nashville in 1971. Five years later, Conlee’s demo tape got him a contract with ABC.

He released a few singles, but didn’t find acceptance until 1978’s “Rose Colored Glasses,” a song he’d co- written with a newsman at his radio station, rocketed into the country Top Five. Conlee spent the next decade or so scoring hit after hit, nearly all of them helmed by producer Bud Logan. He had two number ones in 1979 alone — “Lady Lay Down” and “Backside of Thirty” — and four number two hits through 1981, which included “Before My Time,” “Friday Night Blues,” “She Can’t Say That Anymore,” and “Miss Emily’s Picture.” Conlee returned to the top of the charts three times over 1983-1984 with “Common Man,” “I’m Only in It for the Love,” and “In My Eyes,” and had his last number one in 1986 with “Got My Heart Set on You.” All told, Conlee made the Top Ten 19 times through 1987, when he moved from MCA to Columbia and reached the Top Five with “Domestic Life.” Never much for touring, Conlee subsequently curtailed his recording activities as well, instead devoting his time to charity work (often on behalf of American farmers), raising his family, and running his own farm outside Nashville.
