Real experiences of the real Los Angeles

What are real los angeles tours.

Our guests are interested, curious people who want an authentic experience of Los Angeles. That’s why we mostly do walking tours and cycling tours and use the Metro, because it’s the best way to see and learn about LA – and the most eco-friendly too. Since we began our Los Angeles tours in 2013 over 20,000 guests have joined us on more than 2,000 tours and we’ve been awarded TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence every year. This is what we do:

LA in a Day Tour : We’re pioneers of the all day Metro and walking tour of Los Angeles. We start the day in Hollywood, then we jump on the B Line to DTLA (for lunch at Grand Central Market), before ending the tour in downtown Santa Monica in time for sunset (10am daily).

The Real Hollywood Tour : On our tour of Hollywood you’ll learn the neighborhood’s fascinating history and see its hidden corners, so you truly discover the myth and the place (10am daily).

Santa Monica & Venice Bike Tour : Just a fantastic Los Angeles experience – cycling the beautiful beach neighborhoods, visiting hidden spots and learning all of the area’s history (10am daily).

LA: Food + History + Design Tour : Experience the best of Los Angeles – the great food we have here in SoCal, the fascinating history and the beautiful architecture and design (midday Sunday).

Central Downtown LA Tour : We were the first company to offer daily tours of historic downtown, where Los Angeles was founded in 1781. Join us and discover the vibrant heart of LA (1pm daily).

Mount Hollywood Hike : Griffith Park is home to the Hollywood Sign and is an LA gem. Take a hike with us to the top of Mount Hollywood, see the sign and visit Griffith Observatory (3/4pm daily).

Hollywood Speakeasy Bar Tour : Join us on a journey back to Golden Age Hollywood. You enjoy era-appropriate cocktails in some of the area’s best bars as we tell you stories from its past (6pm Friday).

DTLA Murder Mystery Ghost Tour : From infamous unsolved murders to being home to several serial killers, downtown has some incredibly horrible history. We go on a noir investigation (6pm Saturday).

All of our experiences can be booked as private tours.

The real los angeles tours calendar.

I love travel. In the past there was nothing I enjoyed more than visiting a city and getting lost wandering its streets. However, during a trip to Europe in 2012, I discovered a guided walking tour and realized that it’s a much better way get to know a city. I got a quick history lesson, saw most of the best sights and was able to ask all the vital questions I had (like where to have lunch) from a local expert. It was the highlight of my trip and I began doing walking tours in every city I visited.

When I returned to Los Angeles I looked for a walking tour, but all I found were bus tours of Beverly Hills, which isn’t where the “stars” live nowadays, and Rodeo Drive, where locals like me never go. So, as a historian, traveler and lover of LA, I decided to start a new company, offering totally different tours, that would allow both visitors AND Angelenos to properly experience this amazing city and learn its fascinating history. I was also passionate about creating eco-friendly tours, to raise money for environmental causes.

The Real Los Angeles Tours launched in 2013 with one tour and I was the only guide. Since then we’ve grown a lot – we now have eight tours and ten guides and in 2020 we launched  Real San Francisco Tours . However, one thing has never changed and that’s our mission, which is to give our guests a genuine and entertaining experience of the real Los Angeles. Join us on a tour and we promise you'll have an amazing time and really get to know the city.

In addition to being a guide I’m an internationally recognized clown performer and director, and Associate Artistic Director of the Clown School in LA. I’m originally from Atlanta, Georgia, but I’ve mostly been based here for the last two decades. I’ve had a number of different careers (and still do – sailing is my latest), but one of the most fun was doing sets at the Comedy Store. I’ve been a tour guide in several cities around the world, but being able to take guests to my old haunts on the Sunset Strip easily makes LA my favorite.

la tours hollywood

After a career as an actress in regional theater, film and TV, I was looking for a new direction when I met a lady who told me of her job as a tour director. I immediately asked, “how do I get that job?” She told me and I got certified as an international tour director, leading tours of the Grand Canyon, Washington DC, the Pacific Northwest and Canada, just to name a few. But when I’m back in my hometown, I love working with The Real Los Angeles Tours. These are the kind of experiences that I look for when I’m traveling, so get ready for a fabulous tour!

la tours hollywood

As someone who’s lived in five US states, and spent a couple of years in France, I’m more than just an international fugitive. It was living in Europe that provided me with the opportunity to travel to unique locales and appreciate the history, architecture, food and cultures of the world. I jumped into the travel and tourism industry in 2015, going on to lead tours throughout the western and northeastern United States, in addition to showcasing Southern California. I look forward to sharing the many highlights of Los Angeles with you.

la tours hollywood

Hi there! Maybe it’s the German in me, but I love the idea of experiencing a city through walking, cycling and taking public transport. Los Angeles feels like it’s a treasure chest filled with lots of hidden gems and fascinating stories. When I came here in 2013 I fell in love with LA’s rough beauty, its history and architecture, and the intensity of the light here, so I find it hugely exciting to share my passion for this amazing city. It would be my pleasure to be your host on a tour. Come join us on a special journey through Los Angeles!

la tours hollywood

Hi! Like many people you meet here I’m a transplant, moving to L.A. from the great state of Iowa in 2015. I got the travel bug when I was 19 years old, traveling to Italy with my best friend. Since that first excursion I’ve returned to Europe twice and backpacked around most of the continent, in addition to traveling extensively around the United States, Central and South America. Recently I visited Australia and New Zealand. I enjoy sharing my passion for travel and my love for Los Angeles with all who come on my tours.

la tours hollywood

I’m originally from the UK and majored in history at the University of London. Travel has always been one of my greatest passions and I lived in Germany, Spain and Australia, before moving to L.A. in 2008. Since then Los Angeles has become my home. I love its dynamism and multiculturalism, the many opportunities it offers, the friendly nature of most people here and, of course, the beautiful weather. In many ways the reason for starting The Real Los Angeles Tours was to give visitors the chance to fall in love with LA like I did.

la tours hollywood

I was raised trilingual (English, Danish and German) in Denmark, leaving when I was 19 years old, curious to discover the world and wanting to cross multicultural bridges. My first destination was Los Angeles and I spent five super fun years here, before leaving on more globetrotting adventures. I lived in Australia, Singapore and several European countries, but the lure of L.A. drew me back in 2011, by which time I was ready to hang up my boots. I’m always eager to share my passion for the secret spots of the city I love and call home.

la tours hollywood

Hello there! I may look like a 14 year old, but I’ve been working in tourism for over a decade. I studied acting in Chicago and after college I needed a job, so I became a tour guide. I led deep dish pizza and cupcake tours, but before long I was writing and leading architecture, history and food tours of the windy city. Then, like many actors, I moved to L.A. When I got here I was blown away by the city. I walked the streets and read a ton of books and now I’d love to share the incredible history and architecture of Los Angeles with you!

Fleet Week 2024 sails into the LA Waterfront with ship tours, live music, and galley fun

Battleship iowa will again be a bustling hub, but the "annual celebration of our nation's sea services" will feature several events around town., by alysia gray painter • published may 20, 2024 • updated on may 22, 2024 at 1:57 pm, what to know.

  • Los Angeles Fleet Week 2024
  • May 22-27; events will take place around the Port of Los Angeles and other Southern California locations
  • Active duty ship tours are among the popular offerings of this "annual celebration of our nation's Sea Services"

Sound the trumpets and raise the masts: One of the biggest parties to sail into the Port of Los Angeles is on the horizon, with several tours, concerts, and special events in tow.

24/7 Los Angeles news stream: Watch NBC4 free wherever you are

It's Los Angeles Fleet Week 2024 , the "annual celebration of our nation's Sea Services," and while the yearly happening is focused on showing its gratitude to those who serve, the public is also invited to join the celebration. The USS Carl Vinson, Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, arrived Tuesday in a stunning sight off the Port of LA.

Or make that "celebrations": There are quite a few Fleet Week happenings, and while some will be open solely to veterans — Battleship Iowa tours will be reserved for veterans on the Friday ahead of Memorial Day — there are plenty of pursuits that anyone can join.

Get Southern California news, weather forecasts and entertainment stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC LA newsletters.

As with past Fleet Week festivities, the San Pedro landmark will serve as a busy hub. Active military members and veterans may tour the battleship for free, all weekend long, but other visitors must have a ticket, which should be purchased in advance at the Battleship Iowa site.

Other highlights include "military displays and equipment demonstrations," "aircraft flyovers," and a "Galley Wars" culinary cook-off, a tasty showdown that will find "Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force and Army teams" squaring off for top honors.

Welcome Parties will also pop up in both San Pedro and Wilmington.

Tours return to Judson Studios, the legendary stained-glass makers, after a four-year hiatus

Visiting the active duty ships is always a major focus of the Fleet Week, so you'll want to review all that you need to know before heading for the Port of Los Angeles.

Military concerts will provide the stirring soundtrack to the long holiday weekend, which will conclude with a Memorial Day Evening Service at Battleship Iowa. Earlier in the day, a U.S. Navy march across the 6th Street Bridge near DTLA will take place from noon to 3 o'clock.

It's a reminder that while plenty is afoot, or rather "asail," around the port area, you'll want to look beyond the LA Waterfront for Fleet Week sights and sounds.

Where’s prom? Hollywood clubs, studio lots, museums and definitely not the gym

Amir Mrzae / For The Times

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

In the mid-2010s, celebrities such as Khloe Kardashian, Rihanna and Floyd Mayweather Jr. socialized at Lure Nightclub in Hollywood, drawing TMZ photographers and star-obsessed onlookers to the venue’s curb. Inside Lure, the now-shuttered hot spot offered a menu brimming with expensive drinks like a $70,000 Champagne bottle.

But on a spring night in 2014, a vastly different clientele descended upon the rented-out, 18,000-square-foot venue: high schoolers.

“Sometimes I drive past it and I’m just like, ‘Oh, my God, my prom was there,’” said Tiffany Behnam, a Milken Community School alum, of the scene-y club.

In Los Angeles, where the yearly price of tuition can rival the cost of a new convertible, some private schools go all out when booking venues for the spring bash. While public schools sometimes splurge on prom venues too — in addition to hotel ballrooms and sprucing up their gymnasiums — some of the city’s most elite schools regularly opt for world-class museums, studio lots and nightclubs, giving teenagers only-in-L.A. prom experiences. Booking these event spaces — not including decor, DJ and other amenities — can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $35,000. Prom ticket prices have ranged from around $115 to $175 over the years.

A prom king sits at the party while a couple takes a selfie and another person dances.

“I was like, ‘Of course our prom is going to be there,’ because Milken is quite a prestigious school and they always strive to give us the best,” Behnam recalled.

Immediately after the prom at Lure, Behnam and her classmates ventured to Bootsy Bellows, a velvet-roped club in West Hollywood, which Milken student organizers had booked for the Bel-Air school’s after-prom party. Bootsy Bellows is popular among celebrities like Drake , and, it turns out, some L.A. private school prom committees. Crossroads School, a Santa Monica prep school, held a prom at Bootsy Bellows a few years after the Milken event.

This Heav3n is a genreless, genderless party for the next generation of club kids

At Heav3n, the fabulous, spooky and weird party people find nirvana. Walk through the gates of this queer-friendly L.A. dance party and free your inner devil.

June 2, 2023

“It was a nightclub that no one had been to but kind of had heard lore about and people were curious about,” said Molly Cody, a Harvard-Westlake graduate whose friends attended the Crossroads prom. “People got to go inside a nightclub that they would typically never be eligible to go to.”

When Cody was a senior in 2017, her Coldwater Canyon high school held its prom at the Skirball Cultural Center. A popular prom destination for both private and public schools, the Jewish cultural institution has also been booked for weddings and galas. Cody said because her private school had nearly 300 students per class, it booked a large venue.

“It needed to be more convention center-y rather than nightclub,” she said.

In 2025, Harvard-Westlake plans to hold its prom at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Jasmine Gonzalez, the Petersen’s events director, said schools reserve dates nearly two years in advance.

Though some have a yearly tradition of holding prom at the Petersen, others book the space every two years to give students different locations for their junior and senior proms. The venue’s popularity among L.A. schools has meant big business for the museum. “We host anywhere between 15 and 20 proms a year,” Gonzalez said, adding that it can cost up to $35,000 to rent space at the museum. In 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum didn’t host any proms. The next year, it hosted a handful, including Harvard-Westlake’s, which took place outdoors. By 2022, Gonzalez said, the prom business at the museum had returned to normal levels.

With thousands of students piling into the Petersen donning sparkly outfits in April and May, springtime visitors sometimes notice remnants from prom events while trekking through the museum. “When you go into our elevators, you’ll see some sparkles and that’s because of the dresses,” she said, noting that the space now requests decor and dresses sans glitter.

11 free museum days in L.A. that you’ll want to plan your whole month around

Norton Simon Museum. Skirball Cultural Center. Craft Contemporary. Autry Museum of the American West. Many of L.A.’s best cultural institutions can be experienced for free.

March 15, 2024

Maddy Glick, a Brentwood School graduate who attended her junior prom at the Petersen in 2018, said the festivities were surrounded by “beautiful cars.”

“It was just a really cool space,” she added. The Petersen’s vast collection includes classic rides like a copper-colored 1959 Chevrolet Impala lowrider and a black-coated 1932 Ford Roadster.

Besides Brentwood School and Harvard-Westlake, private schools like Campbell Hall in Studio City, and Milken Community School have also booked proms at the Petersen.

It’s not just private schools renting cultural institutions for prom. Some public schools host their festivities at the museum as well, Gonzalez said. But the smaller private ones may opt for a catered, sit-down dinner, adding at least $4,500 to the bill if they use Someone’s in the Kitchen, one of the Petersen’s preferred catering vendors.

A prom queen centered over The Grammy Museum

At the Grammy Museum, groups using the space work with its exclusive catering partner, Wolfgang Puck Catering. (Both declined to share prom catering pricing.) This year, the all-girls Marlborough School in Hancock Park plans to hold its prom on the venue’s rooftop terrace, which has views of the iconic Hollywood sign and rents for at least $10,000. Rita George, the museum’s chief program officer, said schools have increasingly turned to the museum for prom.

“We definitely do more now than ever and the first one was probably a good 10 years ago,” she said. “I think it offers a more elevated experience, maybe, when it’s at a museum.”

George said schools can also reserve the museum’s exhibits, like its Shakira showcase, giving students the chance to roam different floors during their event.

Prom planners sometimes pick production studios for the rite of passage. Last year, Chaminade College Preparatory, the Catholic private school in West Hills, held its prom on a soundstage at the Jim Henson Co. Lot in Hollywood, where shows like “Perry Mason” and “Adventures of Superman” were filmed. The company didn’t respond to requests for current pricing, but a 2015 flier showed that renting its soundstage and courtyard cost between $8,000 and $13,000 at the time.

For a change of pace, Brentwood School, whose alumni include actor Jonah Hill and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, hosted its senior prom in 2019 at a nondescript, indoor-outdoor space in Hollywood. But student planners added accouterments like a wood-fired pizza oven and a taco station.

For these students, their prom location mattered less than enjoying the revelry. Glick, who planned the event with four other students, said the organizers toured many locales and ended up choosing a “less fancy” space in order to spend more money on the event itself.

“Prom was really fun. People had a really good time,” she said. “Or at least they told me they had a really good time because I planned it.”

justin timberlake forget tomorrow world tour review 2024

Who says the pop star is dead? At his triumphant tour stop in Los Angeles Saturday night, Justin Timberlake led a revival for the reigning Prince of Pop, with a setlist of greatest hits and new material that proves the Grammy-winning entertainer is here to stay.

Justin timberlake unveils tracklist for new album, includes another new nsync song, justin timberlake says he apologizes to "absolutely f***ing nobody" at concert.

Dressed in a glittery black suit and trousers, the singer opened with “No Angels,” a disco-lite cut off EITIW that immediately had the crowd on its feet. Backed by a trio of background singers and a full band (including a four-piece horn section), Timberlake and his “ Tennessee Kids ” followed with a tight triple whammy of “LoveStoned,” “Like I Love You” and “My Love” before slowing things down with “Technicolor,” a seductive slow jam that finds the singer worshipping his “modern day” Marilyn Monroe.

Timberlake has made headlines over the last few months for his off-the-cuff comments , but on Saturday, the singer let his music do most of the talking, while showing off some slick choreography that proved he — literally — hasn’t missed a step. Playful, self-assured and just a tad rambunctious, Timberlake was at his best on crowd-pleasers like “FutureSex/LoveSound” and “Summer Love,” the latter of which gave the star a chance to bust out some rump-shaking moves during a mid-song dance break.

Fans immediately leaped back to their feet when the familiar piano opening of “Cry Me a River” began to play. “That got your ass up!” Timberlake quipped about his controversial track , which came surprisingly early on in the night.

Timberlake didn’t say much else during the concert, though he did note that it was “a special night,” with many of his friends and family in the L.A. audience. Wife Jessica Biel wasn’t seen in the crowd, but an acoustic medley of ballads performed on a side stage included Timberlake’s recent single, “Selfish,” which the singer wrote about his longtime partner.

Indeed, Timberlake has been entertaining fans for a long time, too. “I feel like we’ve grown up together,” the singer said at one point of the night, shouting out “a little group called NSYNC” for giving him his start in the music industry (while NSYNC reunited for a one-off Timberlake show at The Wiltern in March, there was no reunion, alas, on Saturday).

“I’ve grown up with you and you’ve grown up with me,” the singer said. “I’m never going to forget it and I have so much gratitude for each and every one of you here tonight.”

Why Glen Powell Is Leaving Hollywood Behind to Move Back to Texas

While glen powell will still be in the hollywood business, the anyone but you star recently revealed he's leaving los angeles and moving back to his home of texas..

Glen Powell is piloting a new path.

The Top Gun: Maverick  actor is leaving Los Angeles and moving back to his home state of Texas. And while jetting off at such a high point in his career may seem questionable to some, Powell explained to The Hollywood Reporter that the perk of "getting to this point in Hollywood is that I can now leave Hollywood. It's like I've earned the ability to go back to my family."

In fact, spending time with family is one of the reasons he's relocating—along with finishing his college degree.

"I think it's really important to my mom and it's more of an emotional thing for me," Powell, who first left the University of Texas after his freshman year to pursue his career and is now only a few classes shy of graduating, told the outlet in a cover story released May 22. "Plus, I'm so close, I can taste it."

It was another famous Texan,  Matthew McConaughey , who advised him that heading home would be more than alright, alright, alright.

"He's like, 'Hollywood is the Matrix, man. You plug in and it's all fake world,'" Powell explained. "He's like, 'Then I go to Austin, and I unplug. It's all real. Those are my friends, that's my family, my actions matter there.' And he's right. If you're here, you live in the Matrix all the time, there's no separation of those worlds. And for me, especially as my parents get older and my niece and nephew are growing up, I want a separation of those worlds."

To be clear, the 35-year-old is just leaving Hollywood the place—not the industry. That said, there are aspects of Tinseltown he's happy to leave behind, including that "fishbowl feeling" he gets when people snap photos of him on their phones.

"The thing that makes me feel in conflict with some parts of this moment is that I like choosing when I'm out in front," the Anyone But You  star, who's still keeping his New York home, explained. "And I'm more than happy to be on a press tour. I love it. I love going on a Jimmy Fallon —you walk out, you sign autographs, you do the whole thing."

The other thing Powell doesn't like? Questioning people's motives.

"This idea that you're a function here," he continued. "Someone will go, ‘Hey, friend, want to come to this guy's house? Yeah, come over.' And then you show up, and suddenly you're there for, like, someone's tequila launch and all of a sudden there's a photographer and you're like, ‘Wait, what are we doing here?' And I think you get enough of those that you just want to bring your family as close as possible—or run to them."

Ian Somerhalder

The Vampire Diaries alum hasn't sunk his teeth into a new role since Netflix's 2019 series V-Wars . Instead, the dad of two (with wife Nikki Reed ) has dug a little deeper into a passion project, namely his mission to combat climate change by improving the world's soil.  "I stepped away from acting a little over four years ago to raise my kids, build my companies and get these films launched," Somerhalder told E! News in November of launching the 2020 documentary Kiss the Ground and its newly released follow up Common Ground , each detailing the need for regenerative farming.  When he looks years down the road, he continued, "I will be a rancher and building legacy brands, whether it's my bourbon or my health and wellness company, and the regenerative agriculture and healthy soil management practices that I live by and our family lives by. That's where my life was going. So when people say 'Why do you care?' That's why I care. Because that's who I am, that's what I'm going to become."

On a February 2021 episode of her podcast Empty Inside , the iCarly alum told guest Anna Faris that she decided to stop acting a few years back and is now focused on opportunities in writing and directing, in addition to hosting the podcast. "My experience with acting is, I'm so ashamed of the parts I've done in the past," revealed Jennette, who detailed her experience in her 2022 memoir I'm Glad My Mom Died . "I resent my career in a lot of ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most cheesy, embarrassing. I did the shows that I was on from like 13 to 21, and by 15, I was already embarrassed. My friends at 15, they're not like, 'Oh, cool, you're on this Nickelodeon show.' It was embarrassing." Though she hasn't totally written off a second act. "I do feel like only through writing the book have I gotten to a place where I think there might be a way of exploring acting that doesn't carry that baggage that I carried with me for so long," she told E! News in October 2022. "Maybe if I write something for myself. I think that'd really be maybe one of the only ways I could kind of try exploring it again."

This felt like something of a no-brainer. If we had a shot to marry Prince Harry , dedicate our life to the philanthropic causes that matter most to us and gain access to the Queen's impressive collection of tiaras, bidding ta-ta to Tinseltown would feel like an okay sacrifice. Following in the path Grace Kelly took from Hollywood to the Palace of Monaco, Markle left behind her home in Toronto—and her breakout role on Suits —for a life in The Firm. Though, now that she and Harry have shed their senior roles, she's edging back into the business thanks to their new multi-year production deal with Netflix .

Having made upwards of 40 movies since her debut in 1994's The Mask , the actress was long overdue for a break when filming wrapped on 2014's Annie . "I just decided that I wanted different things out of my life," she explained to pal Gwyneth Paltrow of her ultimate act of self-care. "I had gone so hard for so long, working, making films and it's such a grind. When you're making a movie—it's a perfect excuse—they own you. You're there for 12 hours a day for months on end and you have no time for anything else." And there was plenty more she'd like to explore, from writing (she followed up her 2013 New York Times best-seller The Body Book with 2016's The Longevity Book ) to starting a family with husband Benji Madden . But while she confessed to InStyle in 2019, "I don't miss performing. Right now I'm looking at the landscape of wellness and all that," apparently she could be swayed into making at least one encore.  "We just begged and pleased on my knees, like, 'Just give the people one more again,'" Jamie Foxx told E! News of getting Diaz to sign on for the upcoming Netflix film Back in Action . "We love her, we've been waiting on her and this is just gonna be fantastic."

The actor insisted there'd be no encore after he finished his five-year run on Empire . When Extra asked the Oscar nominee about his future ahead of the musical drama series' sixth and final season in 2019, he responded, "Oh, I'm done with acting. I'm done pretending." And though he returned to set for a handful of projects, he again announced his plans to quit acting while promoting his Peacock series The Best Man: The Final Chapters in 2022. "I've gotten to the point where now I've given the very best that I have as an actor," he told ET . "Now I'm enjoying watching other new talent come around, and I don't want to do an impersonation of myself."

Once his time as King Joffrey came to a sudden, purple-faced end in 2014, the then-21-year-old told EW he was getting out of the game. "I've been acting since age 8," the Game of Thrones star explained of his decision. "I just stopped enjoying it as much as I used to." No longer a child star, a bit of the magic had worn off. "Now there's the prospect of doing it for a living, whereas up until now it was always something I did for recreation with my friends, or in the summer for some fun," he continued. "I enjoyed it. When you make a living from something, it changes your relationship with it. It's not like I hate it, it's just not what I want to do." But after a six-year break, he may just be ready to resume his reign , joining the cast of BBC's upcoming series  Out of Her Mind .

When Fast Times at Ridgemont High 's dream girl ( Jennifer Aniston took on her part in September's virtual table read ) wed fellow actor Kevin Kline in 1989, they "agreed to alternate so that we're never working at the same time," he told Playboy of their plan to care for son Owen and daughter Greta (a singer who now goes by the stage name Frankie Cosmos ). However, he continued, "whenever it's been her slot to work, Phoebe has chosen to stay with the children." Though she made a cameo in pal Jennifer Jason Leigh 's 2001 indie The Anniversary Party , Cates devotes most of her time to operating her New York City boutique Blue Tree .

At the height of his Ghostbusters and Honey, I ... fame, the '80s star stepped away from filmmaking not long after his wife passed away from breast cancer in 1991 to focus on raising his kids Rachel and Mitchell. Though he hasn't had a live-action role since 1997, even passing on a cameo in Paul Feig 's 2016 Ghostbusters remake, he's remained a treasured cultural icon, as evidenced by the outrage over reports that he'd been assaulted  while walking in New York City Oct. 1. Thankfully there's good news for fans: he'll make his triumphant return  alongside Josh Gad in the forthcoming Disney reboot Shrunk .

Once she wed fashion designer Adam Kimmel  in 2010, the Never Been Kissed standout hinted that she was maybe kinda done with movies. "Ninety percent of acting roles involve so much sexual stuff with other people, and I don't want to do that," she explained to Vogue . "It's such a strange fire to play with, and our relationship is surely strong enough to handle it, but if you're going to walk through fire, there has to be something incredible on the other side." Her decision was solidified after son Martin joined older sister Louisanna in 2014. "I don't do movie stuff anymore. I am totally an outsider! I … am just a mom and an outsider," she noted to Us Weekly at a 2016 event, explaining that she helps Kimmel with his business and paints on the side. "I am just focused on my kids. I think that's mainly why I stopped."

Portia de Rossi

She'd done Ally McBeal . And Nip/Tuck . Then Arrested Development and finally Scandal when the Aussie realized that maybe she was ready to turn the dial . "I was approaching 45 and I just kind of…was wondering is there something that I could tackle now that I've never done before that would be really challenging and different," she explained on wife Ellen DeGeneres ' eponymous talk show in 2018. "I kind of knew what acting would look like for me for the next 10, 20 years, so I decided to quit and start a business." Her consumer-art company, General Public , already a work in progress, she had just one piece to finish. "I called Mitch Hurwitz , who's the creator of Arrested Development and I said, 'If there is a season 5, I won't be doing it because I quit acting. And he seemed really understanding and he totally got it. We had a great conversation, and then he wrote me into five episodes."

To be fair, once you've won three Academy Awards, what's left to accomplish? Shortly after receiving his sixth Oscar nod for his final film, 2017's Phantom Thread , the thespian had his rep issue a statement informing fans that he "will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject."

Bridgit Mendler

The  Good Luck Charlie alum took a step back from the spotlight in 2018 when she began pursuing a master's degree from MIT, later earning a PhD from the institution. She's also pursuing a law degree from Harvard Law School.

And as if that weren't enough, Bridgit also launched her own startup Northwood Space, which aims to build ground satellite stations to help send and receive data from space, which she became CEO of in Feb. 2023 .
