Best things to do in London mother and daughter

Since I have been living abroad, the quality of time I spend with my loved ones has become a priority. I have always loved to travel, and in the last months I have been thinking about spending a weekend somewhere with my mother. I miss her, and I miss chatting together (without someone screaming) with a cup of tea and going shopping together. Then the idea for this post, because if you are thinking to spend some time with your mum as well, London is a perfect destination. I have selected the best things to do in London mother and daughter .

I have chosen some locations that I usually want to visit with my mum when she comes to visit me in London. I hope you enjoy it!

Sharing a trip with an adult parent is something that may sound a little anachronistic, but for me there is nothing more beautiful than traveling and spending time sharing experiences with the people we love.

And the time spent with them is absolutely a richness!

This is the map of all the places mentioned in this post:

Suggested to read : Best apps to download to visit London suggested by a local

Table of contents

BEST THINGS TO DO MOTHER AND DAUGHTER IN LONDON :  FREE PANORAMIC VIEWS

If you like to admire the city from some panoramic spots for free, then I recommend:

1-ROOFTOP BAR TATE MODERN

From the top floor of Tate Modern, you can enjoy a glass of wine or a tea with a view, but you can also enjoy the view of the River Thames and St. Paul without having to pay for anything.

2-PRIMROSE HILL

Primrose Hill is located next to the Regents Park and it is a pretty spot from which admire London on a beautiful sunny day. If the weather is not too bad, bring a towel and some sandwiches for a relaxing picnic while admiring the city Skyline.

3-SIXTH FLOOR OF THE NEW ONE CHANGE

From the terrace on the sixth floor of The New One Change shopping center, you can admire the stunning St Paul’s chapel, London Eye and Shard. Access is totally FREE!

4-SKY GARDEN

The view that you can admire from the top of the Walkie Talkie skyscraper is one of the most spectacular in London, in my opinion. In particular, you can see the Shard and the Thames expanding in front of you. It’s important to book the visit, and do it in advance. You will have a specific time to go. The Sky Garden is totally free, anyway there are also bars and a restaurant, if you want to have a drink or lunch.

BEST THINGS TO DO MOTHER AND DAUGHTER IN LONDON :  AFTERNOON TEA & COKTAILS

Having a tea in one of the English tradition. During an afternoon tea you can taste some of the English delicacies, like sandwiches, scones filled with clotted cream and jam, shortbreads, cupcakes and various cakes, in a mix of sweet and savory.

It doesn’t really matter what you eat but the location must be AMAZING. Among my favorites there are two very different places, where it is essential to book:

1.SKETCH | 9 Conduit Street, London | Bookings: www.sketch.London

2.NUMBER SIXTEEN | 16 Sumner Place, Kensington | Bookings: www.firmdalehotels.com

3.COCKTAIL WITH A VIEW

If you want to enjoy a glass of wine admiring all the skyscrapers of the City, then your destination should be Le Coq d’argent . The clientele is not too young, there is great music if not dj-set, no need to book, and from the terrace you can enjoy a breathtaking view.

BEST THINGS TO DO MOTHER AND DAUGHTER IN LONDON :  MUSEUMS

BEST THINGS TO DO MOTHER AND DAUGHTER IN LONDON :  SOUTH BANK & SHOPPING

1.south bank.

A walk along the south Bank facing the Thames always relaxes me. It is completely pedestrian and while you can admire the buildings and skyline of the city, you will find plenty to do. There are several points of interest including the London Eye, the Millenium Bridge (from which admire the cathedral of St. Paul ), the Globe the Shakespeare Theatre, the Tate Modern and the Borough Market.

You can also cross the London Bridge at the end of the Borough Market, and continue along the river, you can see one of the landmarks of London, the Tower Bridge. I suggest to visit it in the evening, because with the lights is even more magical.

2.SHOPPING!

For shopping, you can choose among Regents Street, Oxford Street, Carnaby Street, Covent Garden .  Very close to Covent Garden, I also recommend to visit Neils Yard where buying some organic make up; and Petersham Nursery , a concept store for blooms and home decor lovers.  Then head to New Bond Street , even just for admiring some of the most beautiful shop windows, which are always super! If you are markets addicted, then the destination is  Notting Hill for the Portobello market on Saturday, or I recommend the Spitafield market in Shoreditch, which is there every day.

BEST LOCATION FOR INSTAGRAM LOVERS

Mark these four unmissable locations, because a trip to London cannot be completed without a photo in one of the following: Biscuiteers in Notting Hill, Elan Cafe in Mayfair, Peggy Porschen in Belgravia and Saint Aymes in St George’s Field, near Paddington Station.

In London there are plenty of beautiful parks to choose among. Just to name a few, Holland Park, Kew Gardens, Richmond Park and Hyde Park are some of our favorites.

A SHOW in the West End

Treat yourself and your mum to a night at the theatre district: London’s West End is on of the best for musical and more.

You should go for something that fits your budget or you know your mum will appreciate.

BRUNCH or SUNDAY ROAST?

Sunday in london is brunch or sunday roast.

One of the best Risto-brunches in London is  Ottolenghi , named after the famous Australian chef Yotam Ottolenghi. In addition to the great classics, there are also healthier dishes like lots of quinoa salads, and if you love porridge then you should definitely try her!

21-22 Warwick Street London W1B 5NE Ottolenghi is present in Notting Hill, Belgravia, Spitalfields, Islington.

8 Best Mother-Daughter Experiences In London

mother daughter day trips uk

  • Destinations
  • United Kingdom

London teems with historic and cultural activities. My daughter has loved Shakespeare and all of the English histories that he writes about. She also loves contemporary culture, including musicals, books, movies, and fashion. She chose London for her high school graduation trip due to this combination of history and modern life. The city offered us many opportunities for wonderful shared experiences.

Come From Away musical at the Phoenix Theatre in the West End

1. Attend A Musical In The West End

The West End rivals Broadway for the number and caliber of musical productions. My daughter has always loved the songs and dancing of musicals. She introduced me to her favorite musical, Come From Away, when a recording was made available. The story focuses on the town of Gander, in Newfoundland, which welcomed 7,000 passengers from planes diverted on September 11th. Each of the 12 actors portrays a resident of the town and one of the stranded passengers. The stage is sparsely set with 12 chairs that are reconfigured to create different settings.

My daughter was very excited to be able to choose a musical to see in the West End. I splurged for seats with a good view. We sang along to the lively tunes and cried during the sad parts. At the end, we joined the crowd in cheering for several minutes and clapped along to the on-stage band. We ran right to the concession stand to buy matching “Me and the Sky” t-shirts. Taking the double-decker bus home enabled us to stay entranced with the night scene of the streets of London. Our ride home in the front seat of the second level was filled with our chatter about the musical. We often found ourselves singing some tidbit of one of the songs during the subsequent days.

Inspiration for Knockturn Alley on the Harry Potter Walking Tour

2. Go On A Harry Potter Walking Tour

One fabulous way to learn about a city is through a walking tour. We signed up with London With A Local for the Harry Potter tour. I read the series when it was first published and my daughter has read all of the books multiple times. We have also watched the movies repeatedly together.

The tour guide led us to the Vue Theater where the first movie premiered and to the streets that were the inspirations for Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley. She also brought us to the old Scotland Yard and Ministry of Defense, which were used for the filming of the Ministry of Magic. I took a photo of my daughter acting out the scene where Ron is a lookout for their polyjuice potion target. Throughout our walk, the guide asked trivia questions and my daughter and I answered the majority of them.

Fancy desserts during afternoon tea at The Rubens

3. Indulge In Afternoon Tea

When you think of London, afternoon tea must be on the list of must-dos. We decided to splurge for the tea service at The Rubens at the Palace . The sumptuous red and gold room looked out at the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace. We booked for late afternoon so that this could serve as our dinner before we attended a musical.

The server first presented the list of 17 black, green, floral, and herbal teas. I chose Halmari Tea Estate, a black tea with a chocolate tone. My daughter requested Planters’ Mistress but the server told us they had run out. She changed to Inverness Tea Estate, due to its description as “a taste of a bygone era”. Later the server brought her a small plastic container for her to bring home with some of the Planters’ Mistress that he had found.

The loose-leaf tea arrived brewing in a large white china teapot. We placed a gold strainer with wings over our teacups each time we poured more.

A three-tiered plate holder was then brought with my gluten-free meal: four scones on the bottom, four tiny sandwiches in the middle, and four elaborate desserts on the top level. Plates with sandwiches and scones were placed on the table for my daughter and husband. Their desserts rested on a stand next to the table. We made sure to taste each of the desserts, knowing they were too rich to eat all of them.

At the end of our meal, our server brought out a large clear glass teapot with “flowering tea”. Over a few minutes, the clump of tea floating on the water opened and provided an after-dinner digestive treat.

Tower of London

4. Visit The Tower Of London And Crown Jewels

Anyone the least bit interested in English history will want to explore the Tower of London . The 1000-year-old castle still protects the crown jewels and offers a look into some of the grim aspects of royal history.

My daughter wanted to see the jewels first, so we wound through the Disney-esque line learning about the history. We rode a moving sidewalk by spectacular crowns and rods holding 23,000 gemstones and strolled past cases full of gold-plated dishes. Many of these items are still used in ceremonies.

The Yeoman Warder, or “Beefeater”, that led our tour around the grounds was very charismatic and relished in telling the bloody tales of the Tower. The portly Scottish warder, dressed in a black coat with red embroidery, brought us past the dungeons and walls making jokes while talking of murder and execution. We then climbed up onto the walls and made our way around the perimeter taking in great views of the city and Tower Bridge.

Pro Tip: The line to see the crown jewels can take an hour or more when busy. Plan to arrive at the Tower when it first opens and go directly to the line to reduce your wait.

Camden Market

5. Explore Camden Market

My daughter loves to shop for clothes and souvenirs, so we spent an afternoon in Camden Market . We reached it easily by the subway. It includes over 1,000 shops and cafes spread through a maze of narrow passageways. A crowd of people swarmed the area.

Our first stop was a food stand for cake doughnuts with chocolate frosting. They reminded me of a bakery where I grew up in Chicago. We then perused shops with vintage and gothic clothes and all types of jewelry. One warehouse space teemed with dozens of vendors in a dark, complex warren. Too often, my daughter pointed out some clothing that looked like what I wore in my teens and exclaimed how retro it was. I am not sure if that made me feel cool or old.

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

6. Learn About Shakespeare And The Globe Theatre

My daughter’s love of Shakespeare prompted our tour of the Globe Theatre . The original Globe Theatre where Shakespeare staged his plays burned down and the site was covered with other buildings. The current theater was created nearby in 1997 to allow visitors to relive what theater-goers experienced in their day. The open-air theater, with oak beams, lime-plaster walls, and a thatch roof, makes you feel like you are in the 1599 original theater.

The tour guide presented the history of Shakespeare and many facts about the plays. We sat on the balcony and watched a rehearsal for that night’s production of King Lear. My daughter later recounted the entire story of King Lear to me in a language I could understand.

The Rose pub in Chelsea

7. Enjoy Local Events

Staying in a neighborhood allows you to escape the tourist crowds and explore some interesting parts of London. We stayed in Chelsea, which offered local charm but had many bus and subway options for reaching all of London. The restaurants recommended by our host were delicious and interesting.

On Sunday evening, we joined in the local tradition of Sunday Roast. As we entered The Rose , the host informed us that the quiz was about to start. My daughter, my husband, and I possess fairly diverse knowledge and were eager to try our hand. Many of the questions needed knowledge of English culture that was beyond our reach. Therefore, we felt successful finishing fourth of six teams.

We enjoyed figuring out the bus and subway routes from Chelsea to our adventures each day. As we entered the double-decker bus, my daughter and I would dash up the stairs to try to sit in the front row. We enjoyed catching glimpses of the famous sites and watching cars disappear in front of the bus.

8. Peruse The British Museum And National Gallery

London boasts many world-class museums, which visitors can access without cost. Since we only had a few days in the city, my daughter chose the British Museum and National Gallery. Both museums hold fascinating treasures showcasing the history and art of Britain and the world.

The British Museum holds over 50 galleries filled with artifacts from around the globe. My daughter enjoyed exploring the exhibit of intricate clocks while I delved into the Greek sculptures and vases. We visited a few highlights together, then wandered alone to meet up later with tales of what we discovered.

At the National Gallery , we learned new aspects about our preferred artists. My daughter enjoyed seeing the early works of Botticelli, while I reveled in Caravaggio’s obvious superiority over his contemporaries. The special exhibition, which provides an in-depth look into an artist, by good luck, turned out to highlight my favorite, Raphael. Our visit expanded our knowledge and appreciation of art.

A visit to London provides countless educational and fun experiences. Enjoying the cultural and historical sites delivers many bonding opportunities for families.

How to Spend the Perfect Mother-Daughter Weekend in London

author image

See recent posts by Maria Teresa Hart

When daughters are young, playtime often revolves around tea parties and fairytale palaces. We say, it’s time to book the ultimate upgrade -- a weekend trip to London . England’s capital lets you tap into all the girlish fun of a full, proper tea heaped high with sugary treats plus a visit to a real palace (Buckingham, naturally). Moms and daughters of all ages can enjoy riding on the London Eye or rummaging through Harrods and Liberty. Here’s our breakdown of the perfect London weekend for mother-daughter bonding.

Hotels in this story

Friday Afternoon: Arrival

Marylebone, London/Oyster

Marylebone, London/Oyster

Welcome to the capital of jolly ol’ England ! Sort of. If you’re arriving in Heathrow or Gatwick Airport, they’re both situated well outside the city center. For the former, the Heathrow Express train tends to be the fastest and cheapest way to reach the city, especially when compared to taxis. The ride is somewhere around 15 to 20 minutes. The similar Gatwick Express is the best option for those touching down in Gatwick, but it’s a bit of a longer trip — around 30 minutes.

Friday Afternoon: Check-In

The Belgravia Double Room Red at Georgian House/Oyster

The Belgravia Double Room Red at Georgian House/Oyster

Considering you’re just here for a weekend, you’ll want a hotel that packs in oodles of atmospheric details. And the Georgian House delivers. Exteriors are pure Victoriana, and interiors have dollhouse charm. Feminine wallpaper adorns the lobby, the dining room, and several of the guest rooms, which are also individually decorated with details like brass bed frames and turned-leg desks. One room is even done up in a Harry Potter theme (a favorite of daughters and their “mums”). A charming little courtyard provides an alfresco nook, too. And it’s all a 20-minute walk from major sites like Big Ben.

Friday Evening: Dinner and a Show

Shakespeare’s Globe, London/Oyster

Shakespeare’s Globe, London/Oyster

After a long day of traveling, you’ll want to save your on-foot sightseeing for later in the weekend. The plan for your first night? Take in some of the city’s best experiences while seated. Head to J. Sheekey for special-occasion dining that’s refreshingly unpretentious with plenty of top-shelf seafood. Or, indulge in London’s famed Indian food at Delhi Grill or Dum Biryani House. After dinner, enjoy a show. For true throwback entertainment, head to Shakespeare’s Globe, a theater dating back to 1599 that still showcases the Bard’s plays. Or, you can go to the West End to see splashy musicals like Kinky Boots, Strictly Ballroom, or Matilda the Musical.

Saturday Morning: Sightseeing Along the Thames

London Eye/Oyster

London Eye/Oyster

After a good night’s sleep and a full English breakfast (courtesy of Georgian House), it’s time to take a twirl around the Thames to knock out London’s top landmarks. Start out with the London Eye. Lines are shorter if you opt for a ride first thing in the morning. (It’s best to buy your tickets in advance online .) Be sure to take your mother-daughter selfie in the capsule as it goes around the top. After your ride, cross Westminster Bridge to see Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and Green Park, where you’ll find Buckingham Palace. Stick around for the changing of the guards, and if time allows, tour the Royal Mews, where you’ll see Her Majesty’s carriage collection.

Saturday “Lunch”: Afternoon Tea

Photo courtesy of Maria Teresa Hart

Afternoon tea is the main event for any mother-daughter trip to London. Trust us: Skip lunch. Instead, schedule an early teatime. You’ll find that a proper afternoon tea is a meal unto itself, and if you do it right, you’ll leave the table absolutely stuffed. There’s a dizzying amount of venues serving up every type of tea for every type of traveler. For a classic, Downton Abbey-style tea, head to Brown’s or Claridge’s . The Oblix at the Shard serves a sleek, modern version alongside skyscraper views. And Sketch and Mr. Fogg’s add loads of Alice in Wonderland whimsy to the event. Our pick? Fortnum & Mason’s jewel-box tea salon, which is both elegant and playful and doles out some of the best scones in the U.K.

Saturday Afternoon: Shopping

Notting Hill, London/Oyster

Notting Hill, London/Oyster

Now that you’re fueled up on caffeine and carbs, it’s time for a marathon shopping event ! If you went for tea at Fortnum & Mason, the browsing can begin straight away on the ground floor. Here, you’ll find an emporium of British goodies, from jam to “biscuits” (cookies) to a rainbow of teas — all excellent souvenirs. Another worthy shop nearby is Cath Kidston, with her iconic floral prints and knickknacks like mugs, tea towels, and notebooks all set with quintessentially British iconography (Union Jacks, double-decker buses, corgis). But save time and foot power to rummage through some of London’s emblematic department stores. Harrods has a dazzling array of women’s and men’s fashion plus an incredible food hall, and Liberty, housed in a Tudor revival building, is also crammed with floor after floor of fashionable treasures.

Saturday Evening: Dinner with a View

Bridge Street, London/Oyster

Bridge Street, London/Oyster

What’s the best way to cap off a full day of blazing through the city? Looking out over the skyline and soaking in the view . And Blueprint Cafe offers and affordable way to do it. The dining room here has five-star views with three-star prices. If you overdid it at tea time, a starter of heritage tomatoes and an entree of smoked trout salad might be just the thing. But if you worked up an appetite while shopping, the grilled rump of Hereford beef and “naughty” chips (fries) paired with hollandaise sauce has got you covered. The view here, right on the Thames with the Tower Bridge looming in the distance, only gets more spectacular as night falls.

Sunday Morning: Themed Walking Tour

Marylebone, London/Oyster

You’ve checked off the typical London sights, so now it’s time to indulge in something a bit more quirky. A thematic tour will show you a completely different side of the city. Sherlock Holmes fans can make a pilgrimage to 221B Baker Street , while Harry Potter devotees can visit Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross during thematic tours. True crime aficionados will appreciate the spooky thrills of a Jack the Ripper Ghost Walk . Meanwhile, adult mother-daughter duos may enjoy a guided crawl through London’s historic pubs . If none of these niche interests sound appealing, spend the morning doing an in-depth tour of the Tower of London , which unpacks its history in the company of a Beefeater.

Sunday Lunch: Traditional Fish and Chips

LearningLark/Flickr

LearningLark/Flickr

It would be an absolute crime to leave London without eating the city’s ultimate dish : the humble fish-and-chips. Plenty of counters around the city serve up their own version, but Poppie’s is the classic, dating back to 1952. Pick from cod or haddock battered and fried to a buttery crisp. Pair it with a large order of chips (fries), doused in vinegar, as the locals do. More adventurous eaters can try the Brit mainstay, mushy peas, or even jellied eels. But the main course is hardy enough that it should sustain you in your trek back to the airport.

Sunday Afternoon: Departure

Take the Express train back to the airport and say cheerio to London while doing a mother-daughter royal wave to the city as you fly home.

Exploring North Wales: Perfect Mother-Daughter Day Trip Ideas for Mother’s Day

Llandudno-Pier-Spring

Area Guides

Mother’s Day is one of appreciation, love and celebration so why not make a day trip of it, some mother-daughter time exploring our beautiful coast of North Wales. What would make it a special day for her… Wandering around some of Llandudno’s finest attractions or perusing antique treasures and then a delicious lunch or sipping tea, eating scones and being pampered.

Make it an extra special Mother’s Day here in Llandudno; we have a few ideas up our sleeves that might just help you plan that perfect day…

You never want to start too early on a Mothering Sunday, but once the morning rituals are complete with enough tea and coffee consumed, and you’re feeling ready to go, wrap up and head out for a walk along the coast. Walking makes for a perfect way to catch up, put the world to rights and stretch the legs, and certainly helps to work up an appetite for a special lunch. If mum is a keen rambler, there are some classic Llandudno walks she’ll enjoy that offer our best panoramic coastal and mountain views.

For those seeking a shorter walk, set out for a ‘there-and-back’ along the West Shore Coast Path or head to the end of Llandudno Pier – a must-do for the breathtaking backdrop of Eryri’s’ (Snowdonia) mountains, or head towards the Little Orme and Angel Bay.

There are longer routes like the circular trail around the impressive limestone headland that is the Great Orme, for what many have described as ‘the best views in Llandudno.’ Or you can drive less than 5 miles to reach Conwy town, where you can make your way up to Mynydd y Dref or ‘Conwy Mountain’ for a 2 – 3-hour hike and spectacular views over Conwy Bay.

mother daughter day trips uk

Another wonderful way to spend a mother-daughter day trip in Llandudno is to discover some local attractions together. From wandering along the famous Llandudno Pier for its shops, stalls and arcade games, and of course, the views, to visiting local museums, galleries and antique shops.

Perhaps a spot of shopping or finding a treasure of your own at the Llandudno Antiques and Collectables Centre is your idea of a perfect Mother’s Day, or heading to the Llandudno Museum & Gallery which tells the story of our seaside resort town through its fine collection of more than 9,000 artefacts.

For more local history, discover the remarkable Conwy Castle , a 700-year-old medieval fortress and a fascinating site to explore. Spend a morning walking around its battlements and climbing ancient staircases to lofty towers to take in the breathtaking views of Conwy’s coast.

mother daughter day trips uk

Whether you’ve spent the day walking, exploring the local attractions or simply relaxing, no Mother’s Day is complete without time spent together enjoying delicious food.

Our award-winning Chantrey’s Restaurant is the perfect setting, and our Executive Chef has created a special Mother’s Day lunch menu with a beautiful array of dishes. Chantrey’s cuisine is thoughtfully crafted from locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, from the fresh smoked haddock and sirloin of Welsh beef to the rich and delicate flavours of wild mushroom and handpicked selection of Welsh cheeses. Be sure to look through our expansive wine list, perhaps something bubbly to mark the celebration or a delicious red to accompany your main.

If your mother-daughter day requires something a little sweeter, consider the delight of a full Afternoon Tea . A true taste of Victorian extravagance, an Afternoon Tea can feel extra special; something a little different that calls for an occasion and time to relax and take in our beautiful panoramic sea views. Inviting you to sit down for an early afternoon indulgence; sip a glass of fizz while you decide whether to start with a savoury sandwich or a freshly baked scone topped with jam and cream. Your Afternoon Tea will also be accompanied by delicious sweet baked treats, and coffee or a tea of your choice.

If you can’t get together on Mother’s Day, why not give her a Mother’s Day hotel gift voucher for a Champagne Afternoon Tea so she can book a date in the diary for her special celebration.

Did you know that our Victorian Llandudno hotel has a Beauty Lounge that offers a range of beauty treatments and gift vouchers?

There’s nothing that says pure pampering like a beauty or body treatment, from the classic Swedish Full Body Massage for ultimate relaxation and de-stressing neck and back treatments, to cleansing and revitalising facials and luxurious manicures and pedicures. Pick something you know she will love or give her the gift of choice with a monetary gift voucher so she can book something special to look forward to.

There are so many wonderful ways you can spend Mother’s Day together in Llandudno, and by simply being together and sharing an experience – great food, spectacular views and trying something new – will make it truly unforgettable. Plus, mum’s joining us for lunch will receive a special gift from us!

Best Unforgettable Mother-Daughter Trips

Explorer Chick

January 21, 2022

I miss the days of raising my girls, but now that they’re young women I get to experience a totally different mother daughter relationship with them where they’re both my children and my friends. We love having lots of adventures together whether it’s enjoying cocktails at the best rooftop bars in the city or chatting over afternoon tea.

And what better way to celebrate the mother-daughter relationship than with a bit of adventure?

Scroll through these mother-daughter trip ideas for a bit of inspiration. From day trips to far-away treks, let these trips give you and your best girl the perfect excuse for some fun together!

Why Take a Mother Daughter Trip

mom and daughter on an adventure in peru

When we’re off living our lives, time moves SO quickly. Which is why savoring the time between mom and daughter is that much more important.

  • Moms — whether you have a close relationship with your daughter or you struggle to relate to this new version of the baby you raised, there are many reasons to take a mother daughter getaway. Use the planning stages of a mother daughter trip to listen to and understand each other a little more before bonding during the perfect mother daughter getaway.
  • Daughters — embrace the chance to get to know your mom properly. For years, she might have been your cook, cleaner, taxi driver, counselor, teacher, and more, but she is a unique person beyond that. If you can take the time to look beyond your historic relationship, you may find a new friend.

All you need is patience, a willingness to step out of your roles and comfort zones, and a few good ideas about where to go and what to do — those last two are where I come in! I’ll write from a mother’s perspective but daughter’s reading this, trust me, your mom will appreciate your suggestion of a mother daughter getaway and you can have so much fun planning your mother daughter trips together.

Memorable Mother-Daughter Weekend Escapes & Grand Adventures

mother daughter utah trip

Ready to spice up your mother-daughter bonding with a dash of cheeky fun and adventure? Whether you’re squeezing in a weekend jaunt or diving headfirst into a grand escapade, these trips are your ticket to unforgettable memories and maybe a few laugh-out-loud moments.

For those quick weekend getaways, think less traditional, more extraordinary. How about a road trip with a twist? Sure, you can hit the usual spots – museums, boutiques, the works – but why not throw in something utterly bizarre like that giant rubber band ball you’ve always joked about? It’s time to turn those jokes into reality! Or, if you’re feeling a bit more luxe, ditch the mundane for a swanky resort. Indulge in spa treatments that’ll make you forget your name, and food so good you might consider changing careers to food critic. These weekends are less about where you go and more about the stories you’ll tell – the kind that start with, “Remember when we…”

And for those of you craving a longer, more daring adventure, let’s get real: life’s too short for just collecting stuff. We’re talking about collecting experiences that’ll make your friends green with envy. Ever thought of riding camels   under the stars or road-tripping across the country with nothing but snacks and an epic playlist? Or how about gorilla trekking ? Yes, it’s as cool as it sounds. These aren’t just trips; they’re the stories you’ll be bragging about for years.

Whether it’s a weekend of whimsy or a longer leap into the unknown, these mother-daughter trips are about breaking out of the everyday mold. It’s about finding the extraordinary in each other and the world around you. So, pack your bags (and maybe that sense of humor) and get ready for adventures that’ll have you both coming back with inside jokes, a she-pack of new friends, and maybe even a new trail name. Remember, it’s not just about the destination; it’s about the laughter, the stories, and those “you had to be there” moments that you’ll treasure forever.

kayaking trip on the colorado river

1 Vegas, Baby!

Where:  Las Vegas, NV When:  Monthly Duration:  4 Days Group Size:  12 Explorer Chicks Who it’s for:  Outdoorsy duos who like to  moooove  (think: rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, camping, hot springs)

This is top of my personal bucket list.

I would LOVE to party it up in  Las Vegas , then make the drive to the  Grand Canyon , a Unesco world heritage site. I drop hints every Mother’s Day but I have yet to land a visit to Nevada and Arizona.

Plan to visit between November and February for fewer crowds, lower room rates, and more availability (though you can also  book with Explorer Chick  during the shoulder seasons and not worry about any of the nitty gritty booking details). The weather will be cooler but should still be fine for hiking, helicopter rides, rock climbing, kayaking, and soaking in hot springs. You could stay in the city playing the slots and eating shrimp, but with world renowned red rock canyons just on the city limits and the Grand Canyon within a day’s drive, why would you?

women on a safari in Uganda

2 Trekking in Uganda

Where: Uganda When: November Duration: 10 Days Group Size: 11 Explorer Chicks Who it’s for: Literally everyone, just do it

Nature lovers will have all the feels when they get to spot lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and more on an exciting safari in Uganda . It gets even more thrilling when treks take you safely close to wildlife under the guidance of local experts. Get the ultimate mom and daughter selfie with a gorilla family (at a safe distance!) and make lifelong memories with a multitude of wild animals.

women hiking to rainbow mountain

3 Machu Picchu & Rainbow Mountain Adventure

Where: Peru When: A few times a year Duration: 8 Days Group Size: 12 Explorer Chicks Who it’s for: Super adventurous women who need adrenaline like they need oxygen

For women with an adventurous streak, how about hiking, zip lining, white water rafting, and mountain biking in the stunning natural beauty of the regions around Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain in Peru ?

Get acclimatized in the historic Cusco city and check out the Sacred Valley or an ancient salt mine before taking in Macchu Picchu. Take lots of pictures with mom and make your Insta stand out — this has to be the queen of mother daughter trips.

women hiking in Yellowstone

4 Best of Yellowstone

Where: Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming When: Summer and Fall Duration: 7 Days Group Size: 10 Explorer Chicks Who it’s for: Chicks who just want to marvel at how insane nature is together

Don’t pass up the chance to explore America’s first national park (and one of the most spectacular). Leave the city behind and book yourself a mother daughter trip to experience the best of Yellowstone .

Investigate every nook and cranny of this extraordinary destination complete with peaks, valleys, geysers, canyons, and lakes. This adventure is action-packed from the moment you pass under the spine tingling inscription “For the Benefit of the People.” Along with spending quality time with your mom/daughter, you’ll see epic wildlife, meet new gal pals, and experience some amazing hidden gems on and off trail.

Unforgettable Shared Memories

The true value of a mother-daughter trip lies in the strengthening of your relationship. These shared experiences become cherished memories, enriching your bond. Whether exploring the urban landscapes of Las Vegas, the wilds of Uganda, the ancient wonders of Peru, or the natural beauty of Yellowstone, each trip promises a unique adventure, bringing you closer together.

The 8 Most Marvelous Mother-Daughter Trips in the World

Looking for excellent mother-daughter trips to bond with your best girl? Check out our list of the 8 most amazing mother-daughter adventures!

mother daughter day trips uk

If you’ve never taken a mother-daughter trip, you’re sorely missing out. Taking a trip with your daughter (or mom), at any age, is a worthwhile adventure that leads to learning all manner of new things about each other, deepening your bond, and creating magical memories for you to reminisce on for a lifetime. Alone time with your lifelong best friend produces that laugh-until-you-cry kind of moments that are just good for your soul. However, not all destinations are created equal, and not everywhere makes for a good mother-daughter vacation. In this article, we’ve gathered all our favorite locations for mother-daughter getaways and a few tips for how to create the trip of a lifetime.

Mother-Daughter Weekend Getaway in San Francisco

For an unforgettable mother-daughter trip, head for San Francisco and fill your weekend with art walks, scavenger hunts, and ghost hunts! Whether you’re looking to relax and unwind or get excited and inspired together, we’ve created tons of amazing hunts in the Golden Gate City that are perfect for some mother-daughter bonding time!

A Note From a Momma’s Girl

As a writer and long-term traveler, I adore talking about and writing on this topic because it is close to my heart. As a lifelong daddy’s girl, it would be fair to say that I was a grown woman before I realized the wisdom, adventure, devotion, and fierce love that my mother brought into my life.

Several years ago, we began taking an annual mother-daughter trip, and these little excursions have been some of my favorite travel experiences to date (shh… don’t tell my husband). Though our trips didn’t make us best friends (that happened well before) they have strengthened our relationship immensely, given us precious memories, and provided something to look forward to each year.

What to Look For in a Mother-Daughter Trip Destination

The perfect destination for a mother-daughter trip should check some boxes. While each mother and daughter duo is different and will enjoy wildly different vacations, there are a few details that are important to consider before booking a trip together. You want this to be as perfect as possible (remembering that travel is never perfect), so it’s important to choose your location wisely and set yourselves up for success.

1. Safe for Female Travelers

The unfortunate truth about female travel, and life as a female in general, is that everywhere isn’t safe. We believe most nations are hospitable and suitable for female travelers with experience, or those that follow basic safety and security wisdom, but there are exceptions. You can always check the US or UK embassy pages for safety concerns on any nation you’re considering traveling to. Just know that you might not ever leave your yard if you take all their suggestions to heart… seriously, you’ll never go outside. So, when you peruse the safety regulations on the embassy’s site, just take note of anything that particularly pertains to women.

You can also use a search engine to find a plethora of blogs on “safety concerns in Spain,” or “is Turkiye safe for female travelers?” Read a few different sources, and try to find some solo female travel bloggers who have been there on social media or a blog. They generally have the best take on the situation. While these sources are gems, the ultimate piece of guidance is your gut. If one or both of you’re iffy on a spot, skip it. It’s not worth spending your whole vacation worried.

2. A Healthy Mix

The mother-daughter trip features a mix of new adventures, old things you know that you love, and time to rest and connect. Sitting in a sun chair, on a beach, or under a starry night, in the desert, can set the atmosphere for the most intimate conversations. You’ll chat about stuff you never thought to ask in daily life, and those moments are the ones you’ll remember in the years to come. So, yes, plan fun activities, and try new things, but make sure your destination has a peaceful place for you to rejuvenate together as well!

3. Fits Your Travel Skills

Make sure that whatever destination you choose is somewhere that you can navigate fairly easily, especially if one of you is not a seasoned traveler. The point of a mother-daughter getaway is to spend time in paradise together, not to get lost over and over, get confused about language constantly, or feel frazzled the whole trip. ‘

Again, every duo is different in this realm, some of you have the personality to jump right into a motorcycle tour through Vietnam, but many of you might not feel comfortable leaving your home country. There’s no right or wrong. Just stay within your lane.

4. Mutually Enjoyable

Choosing the perfect location for your mother-daughter trip takes a little research into the available accommodations and activities in the area. Do a little digging before you purchase a ticket and make sure that there are plenty of attractions that you’re both at least nominally interested in.

5. Fits the Budget

When it comes to mother-daughter trips, the purpose is to spend time together alone. It’s better to take smaller trips more often than to spend all your dough on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Whether you choose a week in Hawaii or a day horseback riding two counties over, a trip that easily fits into your budget is more enjoyable and will allow you some wiggle room to add on extra activities and fancy meals when you get there.

The Best Mother-Daughter Trip Ideas

Remember, every mother-daughter duo is different. Some of these trips cater to adventurous ladies. Others are for beach babes, and still, others will please the culture vultures. We have tried to include a trip for every pair. We’ll fill you in on why we love these spots but bear in mind that millions of small towns, vibrant cities, and lush islands would make a great mother-daughter getaway, so don’t be afraid to branch out!

1. Costa Rican Road Trip

Why we love it.

For an adventurous mother-daughter duo, Costa Rica is a wonderland of waterfalls, waves, and rainforests that is ripe for exploring. It’s one of the most biodiverse landscapes and ecosystems on earth. CR is also an appealing option as it’s the safest and easiest country in Central America to travel to for outsiders. Most of the tour operators, and a great deal of the general population, are fluent in English and multiple other languages as well. It’s easy to rent a car in Costa Rica, and most roads (aside from the journey to Drake Bay) are nicely paved and fairly easy to navigate. With white Caribbean beaches in the east, vibrant Pacific beach towns on the west, and miles of lush rainforest in between, Costa Rica is truly paradise and makes for an awesome mother-daughter getaway. Plus, the flight to San Jose is generally one of the cheapest from the U.S. mainland.

Where to Stay

Costa Rica offers something for every kind of adventurer. You and your bestie can enjoy a resort beach for a week in the ex-pat haven of Flamingo Bay. It boasts the largest white sand beach on the touristy Pacific Coast and is a convenient destination for whale-watching and snorkeling tours. Alternatively, you could go off the grid in the backpacker beach destination of Montezuma. Explore the wildlife on a night tour in Corcovado National Park, or trek for waterfalls in the region of Grecia. La Fortuna, near Arenal Volcano, is a popular, centrally located destination for hot springs spa resorts, rafting and zipline adventures, and hanging bridges in the rainforest.

Must-Visit-Spots

  • Penca Beach —This beautiful white cove, north of popular Flamingo Bay is frequented by locals and good for escaping the crowds.
  • Hanging Bridges of Arenal or Monteverde Cloud Forest —If you aren’t super adventurous, these are a nice way to see the famous cloud forest. If you want a real thrill, head for Sky Adventure Park instead.
  • Sky Adventure Park —Sky is an outdoor adventure park in the rainforest with ziplines, river tubing, hanging bridges, waterfall rappelling, and Tarzan swings.
  • Uvita Beach —Uvita is located in Marina Balleno National Park and features a unique coastline shaped like the tail of a whale.
  • Catarata del Toro and the Blue Falls —The tallest waterfall in Costa Rica, this beauty shares a property with multiple blue rivers and waterfalls in the lush mountain region.
  • Drake Bay —This corner is the most untamed and biodiverse part of the country-great for wildlife tours. Do not attempt to go to Drake Bay unless you have at least 10 days in-country.

2. Tasty Treats in Paris, France

Ahhh… Paris! If your idea of an ideal mother-daughter trip revolves around tasty food morning, noon, and night, there’s no better destination for a couple of foodies than Paris. Of course, glorious eateries are just one of Paris’s touts. The “City of Lights” is also home to some of the best art and history museums in the world, some of the best boutique shopping on earth, and famous cathedrals, and is a short train ride from dozens of fairy tale castles.

While there isn’t anywhere that’s bad to stay in City Center if you want access to all the historic sites, the most popular neighborhood is Le Marais. For a slightly more budget-friendly option, choose the Latin Quarter. It’s a university neighborhood popular with students and has great local markets and bakeries. If you and your best girl love a good vintage shopping day, then snag a hotel in the trendy Montmartre neighborhood, just know you’ll have to take a short public transit ride to the tourist spots on Île de la Cité.

  • Eiffel Tower at Night— The infamous iron beauty is visible from most of the city, but it truly shines at night! Snag a spot on the grassy knoll near Trocadero and watch the twinkle, or pay the fine and climb to the top for an excellent view of the city.
  • Sainte Chapelle Chapel— This glorious chapel is home to some of the finest stained windows in all of Christendom.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral— One of the most famous cathedrals on earth and filled with priceless art, Notre Dame is a stunner!
  • Sacre Coeur Viewpoint— Take the funicular or climb the mountain of stairs to the top of the Montmartre neighborhood to tour the gigantic Sacre Coure Cathedral and take in the best view of the city.
  • Day Trip to Versailles— The Sun King’s idyllic palace is just a quick, direct train journey from City Center, and is worth a full day.
  • The Louvre— One of the largest and most fantastic art museums in the world, the Louvre is set within a former royal palace and deserves a large chunk of your time.

3. First Timer’s Tour of Italy

Among the most popular tourist destinations on any list, this one probably comes as no surprise. However, of the list of mother-daughter trips my mom and I have personally taken, Italy still ranks as our favorite. Whether you two are history buffs, art aficionados, foodie extraordinaire, beach lovers, or a shop-til-you-drop duo, Italy has something to offer you.

For a beginner’s trip to Italy, we recommend a trip from north to south (or vice versa) with two nights in each of four cities: Venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples (or Sorrento). This trip will be fast-moving, but it will give you a great taste of Italy… literally. With proper planning (and an extra night) you can also add in a day trip to Pisa and a day trip to the Island of Capri.

Must-Visit Spots

  • St. Marks Cathedral— At the heart of the former maritime empire of Venice, St. Mark’s is a golden-clad wonder, grounding the city since 1094.
  • Accademia Gallery— The Florentine home of Michelangelo’s David, the accademia is a must!
  • Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral— Florence’s grand cathedral, with its infamous dome, is one of the most beautiful facades in the world and has a very interesting history, a beautiful baptistery, thigh-burning dome, and bell-tower climbs, and a fascinating, accompanying museum.
  • Field of Miracles (Leaning Tower of Pisa)— The Field of Dreams is the centerpiece of the historic university city of Pisa and can be visited on a half-day trip from Florence.
  • The Colosseum —Finished in 80 AD, the Roman Colosseum is one of the most famous buildings in the world and boasts a torrid, but mesmerizing, history.
  • The Forum at Night —If you’re interested in Roman history and politics, then the forum is a must-visit, but it’s essentially a pile of rocks. However, at night, when it’s lit up by the beams, it is dazzling! The best viewpoint is from Michelangelo’s Camplidoglio outside the Capitoline Museum.
  • The Pantheon —Perhaps the most impressive building in the world (my personal favorite), the Pantheon was constructed in 125 AD, and its famous dome was a lost art for centuries. Studied by architects and artists the world over, it’s a wonder!

It was partially by studying the dome of the Pantheon that engineer Fillipo Brunelleschi finally configured the solution to the conundrum of Florence’s missing dome. Santa Maria del Fiore was domeless for over 100 years because no one could figure out how to properly construct the enormous dome.

  • Pompeii and Herculaneum —Two ancient Roman cities, destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii, and Herculaneum transport you to a day in the life of a first-century Italian.
  • Isle of Capri —The Island of Capri is absolutely stunning. It served as a pleasure palace for emperor Tiberius and now its sparkling navy waters greet thousands of visitors a day. Take a boat tour to the Blue Grotto. Ride the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro, and wander the island taking in all the incredible viewpoints.

If you only have a week and moving all over the country sounds like a bit too much to take on, settle in Rome and take some tips from “ How to Spend a Week in Rome .”

4. Paradise Calling in Kauai, Hawaii

If you want a beach vacation in absolute nirvana, you cannot beat a mother-daughter trip to “The Garden Isle”- Kauai. Kauai is the northernmost of the five major islands and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches and coastlines on Earth. Kauai is so beautiful that director Steven Spielberg chose it as the legendary island of dinosaurs in the original Jurassic Park movies. While the flight is long, the trip is easy for Americans. It’s about as far away from typical American culture as you can get without a passport. Of the three most populous islands, Kauai is the least developed. It has all the tourist infrastructure you need for a comfortable trip, but it still feels untouched in certain areas, which is kind of the perfect mix. There are plenty of luxury vacation rentals, but in the same boat, you might find a swath of sand all to yourself.

To see the best of the island, we recommend splitting your time between the city of Lihue, which you’ll likely fly into, and the northern hub of Princeville. Lihue has excellent black sand beaches, off-beach snorkeling to die for, and fantastic eateries. Princeville is a beautiful little town with a plethora of vacation rentals and glorious white sand beaches.

Must-Visit Sites

  • Waimea Canyon State Park —Waimea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and it’s quite a sight to behold on a clear day.
  • Na Pali Coast by Boat —craggy, colorful, and mind-blowingly beautiful, the Na Pali Coast should be on every landscape lover’s bucket list. The best way to experience the edifice is by boat tour. For an exhilarating ride, choose a guided combination tour of an ancient Hawaiian village and the Na Pali Coast via a raft tour!
  • Secret Beach —Down a slippery set of natural stairs, you’ll find the nudest haven of Secret Beach, otherwise known as Kauapeau Beach. This stretch of golden sands boasts killer waves that are fun to watch or surf for skilled surfers. You can watch spinner dolphins from the shore, bathe under the natural waterfall, and catch a glimpse of humpbacks in the winter months. There are rarely many people there, and it’s easy to find a large portion of paradise all to yourself.
  • Queen’s Bath and Hanalei Bay —Queen’s Bath is a sinkhole that fills with water during high tide, creating a natural oceanside bath for her royal guests. It’s just down the road from one of the most beautiful beaches on the island-Hanalei Bay.

5. Poppin’ Corks in Porto, Portugal

If your normal mother-daughter getaway includes wine tastings galore, branch out from Sonoma County or Napa Valley and book a flight to Porto, Portugal! Porto is a colorful, coastal city famous for its bridges and Port wine. It’s charming cobblestone streets, ancient churches, quaint neighborhoods along the Duoro River, and more port lodges than you could visit in a lifetime. Porto Portugal’s second-largest city and boasts a vibrant nightlife scene and plenty of attractions for a laid-back week by the sea.

If this will be your first time in Porto, we would suggest choosing a guesthouse in the Ribeira Neighborhood. Ribeira is located at the base of the hill by the river and is close to all the major attractions. There are numerous wonderful hotel options, many with gorgeous river views. Just up the hill a bit, you’ll find Baixa which has lovely eateries, cathedrals, and nightlife spots. Ribiera and neighboring Baixa will both be crowded with tourists. If you want a quieter stay, you can head slightly east and book a charming stay in the Bonfim Neighborhood. Porto is a pretty compact city, and each neighborhood has its perks.

  • Porto Cathedral —Affectionately known as “the cathedral,” Porto’s great beauty has reigned over the city since the 12th century.
  • Foz do Duoro —This 19th-century mini-town within Porto is a great place for a swim or to enjoy a port wine in a seaside cafe.
  • Ribeira Square —The downtown area of Porto is a bustling place, and it will certainly be full of tourists, but it’s worth a day. You’ll photograph gorgeous bridges, take in a 3-story fountain featuring Porto’s coat of arms, and take in the vibe of Porto.
  • Porto Wine Cellars —Unlike wine countries in other destinations, Porto isn’t famous for its wineries and vineyards, but for its cellars. In the sister city of Gaia, you’ll find some of the best including Sandeman Cellars and Museum and Cockburn’s. Most cellars included a guided tour and port tasting afterward.

6. National Parks of Utah

The southwestern portion of the United States has a beauty all its own. The red rocks of Sedona, the towering forests of Southern California, and the insane rock formations of Utah are unlike anywhere else. While you can’t go wrong in this region, Utah boasts five national parks, each with its distinct vibe, and makes for a perfect mother-daughter getaway for outdoorsy girls.

Split your time between the northern Arizona city of Page, where you can kayak in Horseshoe Bend or visit Grand Escalante National Park, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park. Then, park it for a few days in Moab where you can explore Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

  • Arches National Park —Arches National Park is a wonder of geology featuring over 2,000 natural stone arches of every shape and size.
  • Bryce Canyon National Park —Bryce Canyon and its weird hoodoos are mesmerizing. The hikes are nice, but just gazing over the rock sculptures from one of the many viewpoints is magical too!
  • Monument Valley —The famous backdrop to Forrest Gump’s sunset runs, Monument Valley at sunset or sunrise is a must!
  • Zion National Park —Zion National Park is home to some of the most iconic hiking trails in all of the United States. With both The Narrows and Angel’s Landing topping the list of American hikes, this park is a major bang for the buck.

7. Spa Getaway in Budapest

Why love it.

In our humble opinion, Budapest sits atop the list of most underrated cities in the world. Historically interesting, an architectural stunner, and full of lovely Danube river walk, this castle-laden beauty is a sightseeing fairytale for mom and her princess! Oh, and it happens to be home to some of the most famous hot spring bathhouses in Europe too!

For a centralized location with good shopping, eateries, and metro access, we recommend staying near the Ferenciek Tere Metro Station. Maverick apartments offer very small but well-appointed rooms on the square, and across the street, the gorgeous Párisi Udvar Hotel Budapest is a 5-star stunner that doesn’t disappoint.

  • Buda Castle— Sitting atop a hill on the Buda side of the River, Buda Castle was home to Hungarian royalty and boasts an incredible view of the city and Budapest’s stunning Parliament on the other side of the river.
  • Fisherman’s Bastion —The Gothic Revival and Romanesque towers of Fisherman’s Bastion feel like something straight out of Sleeping Beauty.
  • Dinner Cruise on the Danube —Danube River ferries offers dinner cruises with gorgeous views of the city and traditional folk dancing.
  • Széchenyi Thermal Bath— While there are numerous spa complexes in Budapest, this banana-yellow beauty is the biggest in Budapest and all of Europe for that matter. Enjoy a wellness day full of special spa treatments surrounded by incredible beauty.
  • Ruin Bars—A series of quirky nightlife establishments set in the ruins of communist-era structures, the Ruin Bars are a uniquely Budapest experience.

8. Greek Holiday on Mykonos

The Greek Island of Mykonos is typically categorized as a cruise ship stopover or a party island. However, this Mediterranean gem offers something for everyone, and its wonderful boutiques, lazy beaches, and popular wine bars make a great stop for a mother-daughter duo as well. While there are several party beaches on one end of the island, there are also beautiful stretches of local beaches that are almost empty and offer an escape from the bustle of Chora town.

To be in the heart of the action, choose a hotel in Chora (Mykonos Town). Here you’ll find easy shopping, an urban beach, the famous windmills, and plenty of great eateries on the water. Another great option is a bus ride away in the neighborhood of Ornos, Deliades Hotel offers a wonderful breakfast room, affordable and upscale rooms, and a rooftop pool with a view over Ornos Beach. The neighborhood also boasts great cafes and easy access to the bus to Chora.

  • Flour Mills of Mykonos —You can’t miss these four famous windmills right in the heart of Chora.
  • Party Beaches -—If you and your girl are of drinking age and want to hit the party scene, Paradise and Super Paradise beaches are famous for their all-night shenanigans.
  • Local Beaches —For a more laid-back beach encounter, head for the coves of Agios Sostis and Παραλία Πάνορμος.
  • Ano Mera —Mykonos’ second town, Ano Mera is good for escaping the crowds. It’s home to a cute square, and beautiful monastery, and gives bus access to some of the lesser-visited resort beaches on the southeastern portion of the island like Kalafati.

Pack Your Bags

These eight options for a mother-daughter trip are just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many fascinating destinations out there where you can shop til you drop, sip afternoon tea together in a classy cafe, or get lost on a mountain trail. In my child-free 20s, I was teaching in Los Angeles and saving my pennies so that I could backpack abroad during my summers off. My love of travel started then — riding in the back of a pickup truck from Latacunga to the Quilotoa Loop in Ecuador, marveling at the size of China’s Great Wall as I traversed it at Mutianyu, and wandering the snowy alleys of Takayama, Japan, in search of incredible ramen.

Looking back, I see what a wildly charmed decade of my life that was. And once I had children — two daughters, now 10 and three — I was determined to keep some of that charm around. You’d be hard-pressed to find a mother who thinks travel with kids is easy , but ease isn’t the goal, is it? For me, the fun is in discovering who you are in a new place, among new people, learning about cultures around the world, and going for something even if it scares you a little. I love seeing who my daughters are when they’re out of the comfort of their home: inquisitive, brave, flexible, and outgoing.

So, take the trip, whether it’s near or far. Here are 25 incredible places for a mother-daughter vacation.

Monteverde and Playa Tamarindo, Costa Rica

MB Photography/Getty Images

There may be no better place in the world to zip line than in the forest of Monteverde. During our tour at Selvatura Park , we couldn’t see the opposite end of our zip line because of the thick clouds blanketing us, so we flew through the magical gray, trusting we’d make it to the other side.

Try a nighttime tour in the nearby wildlife refuge to spot animals like sloths, kinkajous, toucans, tarantulas, and vipers. Then, make your way approximately three hours west to the beach town of Tamarindo — great for surfing lessons (the tide is low and ideal for beginners), leatherback turtle sightings (which nest here from October to May), and beautiful sunsets. It’s also a fantastic place to snorkel.

Sedona, Arizona

JenniferPhotographyImaging/Getty Images

The red-rock peaks of the American Southwest are stunning, and Sedona is my favorite place to experience them. Known for its vortexes, or places of more intense earthly energy, Sedona is also the place to feel the Earth’s vibrations. You can tackle easy hikes with children of all ages, like the creekside Baldwin Trail that offers views of Cathedral Rock (which is a vortex). Boynton Canyon (another vortex) is a gorgeous playground for nature lovers; drive in for a hike here (about 20 minutes from town center), or stay right in the canyon at Enchantment Resort , where meals and pool time come with stellar views of the canyon. If your daughter is 16 or older, Mii Amo spa is a primo place to indulge in a self-care vacation.

Puerto Rico

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

On tropical walks in El Yunque National Forest , you are surrounded by lush vegetation, wildlife, and waterfalls, making Puerto Rico another destination for mother-daughter pairs wanting to recharge in nature. Leap into a swimming hole to cool off, or book a zip-line tour to get your adrenaline going as you soar through the forest canopy. Then, get to one of the three bioluminescent bays in Lajas, Fajardo, or Vieques for a kayaking trip illuminated by glowing dinoflagellates. Just wandering the streets of Old San Juan, snacking on piraguas (shaved ice), is also fun.

Lake Tahoe, California

Michael Heiman/Getty Images

Lake Tahoe is the ultimate alpine lake, its shores speckled with world-class ski slopes , casinos, and forested hiking trails. In the winter, my daughter goes ice skating or takes a ski lesson at resorts like Palisades Tahoe or Northstar . And you’re never too young for some après-ski — a bloody mary in the midday sun for adults, and hot chocolate for the young ones after a couple hours on the mountain.

In the summer, tube down the Truckee River (you can DIY it or go with an outfitter ) and spend lots of time in the woods. Try the Tahoe East Shore Trail (three miles) for a paved walk right along the water, or pick from many paths in local-favorite Emerald Bay State Park . For lakeside fun, picnic and play at Pope Beach on the south shore or Kings Beach on the north shore. If the kids paddleboard or kayak , gear up for that on Tahoe’s crystal-blue waters.

North Shore, Oahu

drewsulockcreations/Getty Images

It's hard to have a bad day in Hawaii, but the most serene days might be those spent on Oahu’s North Shore . Long protected from major development, there are no malls or modern complexes here, so come for respite and wildly gorgeous waters. Turtle Bay Resort is a great accommodation option close to the white sand of Kawela Bay. Snorkel at Three Tables, Shark’s Cove, Turtle Bay, or Kuilima Cove — the latter two are best for beginners. Hike through lush rain forest to Waimea Falls, saving time to grab quintessential (and kid-friendly) local snacks. Roadside fruit stands are bright with lychees, rambutans, and guavas. Matsumoto Shave Ice and Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck in Haleiwa are required eating on the island.

The Mighty Five, Utah

Jeff R Clow/Getty Images

Traversing Utah's "Mighty Five" — Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion national parks — makes for one of the grandest road trips in the U.S. Some people even try to visit one park a day for a scenic five-day adventure. Pack solid hiking gear, tons of snacks, and all your energy to tackle great trails and scramble wild rock formations. Or, just visit a couple of the parks to reduce the driving. In Zion, a smooth-running shuttle system makes getting to trailheads easy; try the Watchman or Emerald Pools trail. In Arches, do the Sand Dune Arch and Broken Arch hikes. In Canyonlands, find the iconic Mesa Arch. Capitol Reef is great for watching the sunset and spotting petroglyphs. And in Bryce Canyon, observe incredible hoodoo formations from Rainbow Point or along the Queen’s Garden Trail.

Banff, Canada

Banff impresses with its turquoise alpine lakes, geothermal springs, and accessible glaciers. Stay at the castle-like Fairmont Banff Springs — perhaps the most majestic property I’ve ever slept in — so you can return to excellent on-site restaurants and cozy beds after each long excursion. A hike to the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse is life-changing; from Lake Louise, you pass through a dramatic glacial valley to a 1927-built structure about 3.5 miles in. House-made soup or biscuits and jam await your arrival. The next day, soothe your muscles at Banff Upper Hot Springs , or explore the shops and eateries of Banff and Lake Louise villages. Kayaking on Moraine Lake or Emerald Lake are other must-dos while you're in the area.

Mendocino County, California

Mint Images/Getty Images

Come here to spend time under California’s singular redwood trees and to revel in the beauty of the Golden State’s coastline. A ride on the historic Skunk Train (a remnant of a retired rail system used for logging) will take you through the woods. Otherwise, explore the forest on foot with a walk on the two-mile loop trail in Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve . Then, hunt for sea glass at Glass Beach and enjoy gorgeous ocean views and wildflowers as you wander in Mendocino Headlands State Park .

Machu Picchu, Peru

Sergio Amiti/Getty Images

Hiking to the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and an epic experience for a teen. While the Inca Trail is long — 26 miles — and sometimes steep, it’s not an insurmountable feat when done over multiple days, which is the typical method. Book an expedition with a recommended outfitter that guides you for four days and three nights (or more), and get ready for spectacular views. Watching the sunrise over the ruins — set nearly 8,000 feet above sea level — is a bonding experience that will be tough to top.

Mayakoba, Mexico

Aurore Kervoern/Getty Images

This eco-resort destination is easily reached via Cancun and has a wondrous setting, where blue waters, white-sand beaches, and mangroves meet. There are four luxury properties here, and all are ideal for a relaxing and tropical mother-daughter getaway. Should you want to venture off the property, take a motorboat to a neighboring hotel (you’re sure to see tons of bird species en route), book an excursion through your concierge to a local cenote, or take a day trip to the Mayan ruins at Tulum.

Sun Valley, Idaho

Tetra Images/Getty Images

Known for its magical winters, this mountain resort draws boarders and skiers of all levels to its fresh powder. Book lessons for your littles on Dollar Mountain, or enjoy the atmosphere at a slower pace with a snowshoe session, cross-country ski adventure, or horse-drawn sleigh ride. There's also plenty to do in warm weather, from hiking and biking to fishing (try nearby Redfish Lake) and rafting. Don’t miss the free-admission outdoor symphony performances (usually in August) or the burgers at Grumpy’s , a local institution.

Nairobi, Kenya

Anagramm/Getty Images

Giraffe Manor caught my eye years ago, and I’ve talked about it with my daughters ever since. Set in a suburb of Nairobi, this 12-room boutique hotel is also a Rothschild giraffe sanctuary — the immense creatures are known to stick their heads into your bedroom window for a snack. From there, we’d move on to a multiday safari experience in the Masai Mara National Reserve , where game drives regularly include elephant, buffalo, and wildebeest sightings.

East to West Ireland

Pierre Leclerc/Getty Images

Dublin is a fantastic starting place for a mother-daughter driving tour of Ireland — catch an Irish dance and music show, cross the River Liffey via the Ha'penny Bridge, then start your adventure through stunning countryside. My eldest daughter and I joined Adventures by Disney for an epic itinerary in the country when she was just five years old. Her favorite stops were mine, too: picking flowers around the Rock of Cashel, shopping in Kilkenny, sleeping at Dromoland Castle in County Clare, and walking along the Cliffs of Moher, where puffins are often spotted. But an early evening visit to Rathbaun Farm was the ultimate highlight. We made biscuits from scratch with the farm owners, fed baby sheep, and ate a home-cooked Irish meal accompanied by live piano music.

Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara, Japan

Taylor McIntyre/Travel+ Leisure

Japan’s renowned rail system makes traveling within the country easy and pleasant (read: great with kids, who are nearly always enthralled with a train ride). Spend a few days in Tokyo, snacking in underground food halls and joining the fray that is Shibuya Crossing. Our family adores Japanese artists Yayoi Kusama and Hayao Miyazaki, so a mother-daughter Tokyo visit would include visits to the Yayoi Kusama Museum and Ghibli Museum . After that, take a train to Kyoto (a bit over two hours), where you can spend days strolling historic temples like Kinkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera and shopping for handicrafts in the zigzagging Chawan-zaka, or "Teapot Lane." At some point, take the 45-minute train ride to Nara Park, where you can feed the protected (and sacred, according to Shinto beliefs) deer that reside there.

Greater Portland, Oregon

tomwachs/Getty Images

Start in Portland, fueling up at Pine State Biscuits and shopping at the gem that is Powell’s City of Books . After a day or two in town, head to two incredible natural features: Multnomah Falls (tackle the eponymous 2.3-mile out-and-back trail here) and Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area (the 4.4-mile trek to Dry Creek Falls is great). Next, you can drive the 35-mile Hood River Fruit Loop past farm stands and vineyards with wild views of Mount Hood. Or, if everyone’s over 21, head back to Portland, then south for wine tasting in the Willamette Valley .

Even at a young age, kids can (and love to) identify iconic sites around the world. In London, listening to the chime of Big Ben is a thrill, as is walking Tower Bridge and riding the London Eye. If your child is a theater buff, don’t miss a show at Shakespeare’s Globe , then stroll along the Thames and see what adventures arise. Make a reservation for afternoon tea in the Gallery restaurant at Sketch , an enduring hangout known for its artsy, elegant decor. And, of course, if your kid is a Harry Potter fan, stop for photo ops at Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Station.

My eldest daughter can’t wait to visit Paris, and we have a loose itinerary ready. Requisite stops include the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Musée d'Orsay, home to must-see works by Monet, Renoir, and van Gogh. A food tour along the cobbled streets of Montmartre will highlight artisanal cheeses and chocolates, plus pastries (and wine for mom). Feasible day trip destinations include Versailles for a palace stroll, Giverny to visit Monet’s garden, and the Loire Valley for castles and biking. And we won’t leave without a cruise along the Seine, an incredible way for kids to see the city.

zhangshuang/Getty Images

My kids love dumplings, so we’d make the trip to Beijing just to eat this dish on every possible corner. In many shops here, cooks stuff and crimp dumplings behind large windows, and watching their artistry and speed is mesmerizing. Between meals, visit the Forbidden City (completed in 1420), Summer Palace (restored in 1886), and Great Wall (what you see today dates back to the 17th century). A tween or teen can really appreciate the details and age of these structures, and that they’re a window into the country’s past. The most popular Great Wall exploration point is Mutianyu, located about a 1.5-hour drive from Beijing.

Mexico City

DANIEL SLIM/Getty Images

This metropolis is a haven for art lovers and ideal for teens who like exploring urban landscapes. Tour Frida Kahlo’s house , be entranced by Diego Rivera’s gargantuan murals — the one in the National Palace is impressive, looming nearly two stories high — and visit the exhibits in the Palace of Fine Arts . The Museum of Modern Art and Museo Jumex are other top attractions. In between art walks, eat tacos. A taco tour by Club Tengo Hambre is fit for foodies of any age. Other kid-friendly musts include a meal at Panadería Rosetta , churros at Churreria El Moro , and a half-day trip to the Aztec ruins of Teotihuacan .

New York City

Watching a story unfold on stage is a true pleasure, and where better to do so than Broadway? Any child, tween, or teen with a knack for performance will be thrilled to see a show (or three) in New York City . Follow that up with other classic NYC experiences , from walks in Central Park and along the High Line to a pizza tour to a ride on the Staten Island Ferry for Statue of Liberty views. Watch the chess players in Washington Square Park, wander the aisles of the Strand Book Store , and eat a giant cookie from Levain Bakery before leaving town.

Feng Wei Photography/Getty Images

Two words: Stanley Park. Locals and tourists constantly cross paths here, drawn to the sprawling outdoor space’s beauty and varied activity options. With younger kids, ride the miniature train at Stanley Park Railway , visit the Vancouver Aquarium (set in the park), or play in the many playgrounds and splash areas here — there’s even a giant public pool with waterslides and bay views. My daughters also delighted in themed afternoon tea at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver , as well as crossing suspension bridges at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and Lynn Canyon Park , both in North Vancouver. A quick ferry ride to Granville Island brings you to a great food hall. And if you have the time, spend a day and night on Victoria Island and/or in Whistler, the gorgeous mountain town less than two hours north of Vancouver.

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

This trip could be all about gelato, pasta, and pizza — the primary food groups of the young, no? Dine on these delights as you stroll or people-watch alongside Venice’s famous canals, then board a gondola to see the city from the water. Take time to get lost in the narrow, colorful roads of Burano. Next, enjoy the incredible examples of Italian architecture at St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the Rialto Bridge. A kid-friendly cooking class would even let you bring a bit of Italy home, in a way.

Biking in Copenhagen is a must — it’s how lots of locals get around, and an unbeatable way to explore this coastal city. Pedal the harbor for great water and neighborhood views (the whole route is about eight miles), making a special stop at the colorful Nyhavn canal district. If you’re feeling energetic, do the nearly 20-mile Six Forgotten Giants route, which gets you into Copenhagen’s suburbs as you "hunt" for fantastic wooden sculptures by local artist Thomas Dambo. And spend a day in Tivoli Gardens ; this one-of-a-kind amusement park, open since 1843, offers rides for all ages and stunning gardens.

Seattle and Whidbey Island, Washington

UCG/Getty Images

This Pacific Northwest duo provides easy urban and wilderness possibilities. Take in the city from the observation deck of the Space Needle, then eat your way through Pike Place Market; we always stop at Piroshky Piroshky for a savory handheld pie and Beecher’s Handmade Cheese for samples. In the summer, cool off in the splash area of Jefferson Park or even the Seattle Center International Fountain. And after your city adventure, stay a couple of days on Whidbey Island, where you can play or go whale watching on beautiful beaches, take forest walks, or enjoy berry picking at a local farm. The seafood here is unmissable, too.

RYAN KYTE/Getty Images

At five years old, my first daughter could see the appeal of this city. We admired the pink granite of the state capitol building, then spent hours in Zilker Metropolitan Park (home to the Austin City Limits Music Festival ). In this sizable green space, activity possibilities include a ride on a miniature electric train , strolling the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum , and cooling off in Barton Springs Pool — fed by natural springs, it’s a whopping three acres. Look for peacocks in Mayfield Park, and pick a way to get out on Lady Bird Lake, be it kayak, canoe, SUP, or river cruise. Then, sample incredible Tex-Mex cuisine at stops like Torchy’s Tacos and La Mancha and top-notch barbecue at local favorites like Interstellar BBQ or Franklin Barbecue .

7 Memory-Making Mother-Daughter Trips To Bond with Your Teen

mother daughter day trips uk

A mother-daughter relationship is precious and sometimes precarious. Nothing helps strengthen the bonds between a mom and daughters more than participating in activities shoulder-to-shoulder and sharing new experiences. Mother-daughter trips are a perfect way to accomplish both — and those long hours of travel time can be the perfect way to enjoy quality time and get even a recalcitrant teen to open up.

I started taking mother-daughter day trips with my girl when she was very young and we began lengthening those to mother-daughter vacations when she was six or seven. Over the years, our annual mother-daughter getaways have become a treasured tradition.

This precious time together has become absolutely priceless as she moves through her teenage years. Over the years, we have tried all sorts of trips (see my tips for planning a mother-daughter trip ) and each of them has hit home at various stages of her growth. I wanted to share a few of our favorites to give you memorable mother-daughter trip ideas to use in your own planning.

7 Best Mother Daughter Trips

I understand that sometimes it is hard to pull off a family vacation, let only a one-on-one trip. It is definitely easier for me because I only have one child. But I still think it is worth the effort, even if it can’t happen every year. These trips build a foundation for a strong relationship even when your daughter leaves home and goes off on her own.

1. The Adventure Trip

Hanging off the Mt Norquay

Teens love to be active and often seek thrills that we as moms would rather avoid. But I can tell you from experience that jumping in and adventuring together will gain you respect, empower you both, and generate stories for years to come.

Even if your trip isn’t ALL about adventure, it is easy to build a few adventurous activities into your trip. That can be paddle boarding, kayaking, horseback riding, zip lining, or tree-top adventure courses. Of course, you can hike just about anywhere but for epic views try one of the Utah National Parks .

Some of our favorite adventures include:

  • White water rafting in Oregon
  • Rock climbing in Smith Rock State Park in Central Oregon (Central Oregon is a great place for adventure — hiking, caving, rafting, climbing, tubing, and more.)
  • Hiking in the Canadian Rockies (a trip that also included horseback riding and the exhilarating day climbing the Via Ferrata on Mount Norquay.)
  • Hiking and horseback riding in the Black Hills and Badlands National Park in South Dakota

2. The Wildlife Trip

Mother daughter trips -- seeing the wild ponies in Chincoteague

Tweens tend to be animal lovers and get excited about up close and personal animal encounters . We are both animal lovers and we have a lot of bucket list dreams that involve polar bears, pandas, and penguins.

While some of those dreams are a little inaccessible on the current budget, it is easy to build wildlife sightings or animal experiences into a mother-daughter trip.

For example, after reading the book Misty of Chincoteague together for a mother-daughter book club, I figured that a mother-daughter trip to see the wild ponies of Chincoteague would be a perfect idea. We huddled together against the cold wind and spray of water on our boat ride around the island, but soon we were both beaming when we spied our first pony herds.

Some of our favorite wildlife trips include:

  • Wildlife viewing in Yellowstone National Park and learning about dinosaurs in Bozeman, Montana
  • Watching the bison, burros, and prairie dogs in the Black Hills, SD
  • Bear-watching cruise excursion in Alaska
  • Dude ranch vacation
  • Drive through safaris and zoos

3. The Cultural Trip

Blue Gate of the Fes Medina

If you are looking for something more adventurous, that also wraps in culture, education, and yes some wildlife (in the form of a llama hike!), I would encourage you to look at GOOD Travel . This responsible travel company is founded by a mom and they run mother-daughter trips to Peru each summer.

Every aspect of the trip – from the hotels to the llama hikes to the chocolate making – has been designed to ensure that the local community, economy, and environment benefit from your visit. So it is a great way to have an amazing bonding experience (with other moms and daughters) in a positive way.

I think this would be perfect for a big birthday or moving up from grade school to middle school, middle school to high school, or even a graduation trip . If you sign up , be sure to note that you were referred by WE3TRAVEL (my affiliate code) and you will receive a 10% discount .

Of course, there are countless cultural trips you can take from learning about native culture in your own backyard to exploring a new part of the globe. One of the most immersive cultural trips we have taken as a family was to Morocco .

4. The Big City Trip

girl overlooking river walk in Milwaukee at sunset

If wildlife and adventure aren’t your things, maybe a mother-daughter weekend getaway to a big city — like New York City, Los Angeles , or San Francisco for shopping, eating, and visiting the theater and museums is more your deal. These trips are great for all ages and can even become an annual tradition as most cities have so much to offer and interests change as your daughter gets older.

One of our first mother-daughter getaways was to Baltimore, Maryland. Visiting a new city gives you a chance to explore together and share new experiences. We had a very special time wandering the city streets together and it allowed her a more active role in choosing which attractions and restaurants we visited.

I know that not only have these trips given us fun memories together, but it has also taught her skills about navigating a city, using public transportation, and how to keep yourself safe.

Some of our favorite U.S. cities to visit include:

  • Nashville – music, murals, and food
  • Atlanta – food, Coke, Aquarium, and history
  • Milwaukee – festivals, art, and lakeside fun
  • Minneapolis – Prince, shopping, art, and waterfalls
  • Chicago – theater, views, and museums
  • Philadelphia – history, zoo, and cheesesteaks

5. The Educational Trip

I am a man mural in Memphis

We spend a lot of time teaching our kids, but when you have an opportunity to learn together you are both on the same level and have another shared experience to reference and discuss.

We have taken a lot of educational trips together visiting historical sites, museums, and living history museums. Not every trip is themed around an educational topic, some just include an activity. But others, like our Civil Rights road trip , have been designed for a purpose and had a profound impact.

I think ages 8-14 are ideal for this type of trip. Some of our favorite educational destinations include:

  • Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown (paired with a fun day at Water Country USA )
  • Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia
  • Gettysburg including the National Battlefield — this was one of the first times that I could see her really taking in and processing everything that we learned and observing the impact that it had
  • Memphis including an African-American History tour and visiting the National Civil Rights Museum

6. The Spa Trip

Sierra Grande spa couples massage room

I thought spa resorts would require my daughter to be sixteen (and some do), but these days you can find spas that offer services for tweens and teens — from chocolate pedicures, blow outs, or massages for moms and daughters.

I’ll never forget her dreamy smile after her first massage! What a privilege to share this fun “first” with her. There have been a few times when we have added a spa experience to our trip, and I can’t wait to plan another spa getaway. I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to bribe her to go on a mother-daughter spa weekend even when she has moved out!

Our favorite spa experiences have been at:

  • Sierra Grande in Truth & Consequences, New Mexico
  • The Beach Plum Spa at the John Carver Inn in Plymouth, Massachusetts

7. The College Trip

Now that I have had a senior, we have added a new kind of mother-daughter trip to our repertoire — the college visit trip. While these can be stressful on both sides, and we don’t like to think about sending them off into the world, this is an incredible opportunity to be involved in one of the most important decisions your daughter will make so far in her life.

Sometimes, she may even listen to your point of view or gain some wisdom from your experience! But don’t make it all college and no play. Here are some great tips for turning a college trip into a mini-vacation. And as we have crisscrossed the country college shopping, I’ve also added some guides to visiting campuses on my sister site, Your Time to Fly, including:

  • Planning a college visit to Washington DC
  • Visiting Stanford
  • Tips for visiting University of Michigan , University of Wisconsin-Madison , and University of Colorado-Boulder

These trips have created a bank full of cherished memories — for both of us! Even though planning a mother-daughter getaway with your tween or teen daughter may sound daunting or impossible, I encourage you to give it a try. Start with a day trip or shared experience and go from there.

Need more ideas? What about a cooking class, TV or movie location tour, food-themed trip, attending a sporting event, going to a musical performance, or something else that grabs her interest? The best mother-daughter vacations are ones where she has a say in what you do.

I would love to hear your ideas, suggestions, and experiences. Join our private travel with teens Facebook group !

Love these ideas. I haven’t done a spa trip with Cassie yet, and I definitely want to plan one. Gonna check into Beach Plum!

I’m in awe of your Norquay, Banff, via ferrata adventure. I’m a bit afraid of heights and that ferrata route is super challenging. Good on you for conquering it!

thank you!! I had my moments but when your teen is encouraging you, you don’t chicken out. I sure was exhausted and sore that night though!

Love this! I especially like the adventure trip idea, and not just because it features Crater Lake and Smith Rock…in my backyard!

Mother-daughter trips have been SO GOOD for my daughter and me in terms of strengthening our relationship and just plain having a whole lot of fun!

It sounds like so much fun! Eventually, I want to do a Jane Austen tour with her, but I think, for now, she’d rather we go to an adventure playground. Mother-daughter trips have been SO GOOD for my daughter and me in terms of strengthening our relationship and just plain having a whole lot of fun! One of my favorite travel memories was traveling with my mom as an adult child of 25 to Paris for the first time.

This is lovely, my mother and I did trips like this in my teens and now that I’m in my 30s we are doing them again. I took my mum on a northern lights trip recently which was so nice. It will be great when the tables turn and your daughter plans the trip and takes you!

I just went to Egypt with my daughter and it was amazing.

Having only just started in the “tween” world (she is 9) i am learning that i have to do special things with her, so loved this post for giving me inspo.

I’m so glad to hear it!

I traveled a lot with my daughter solo when she was smaller. Now that she’s bigger I think I need to plan another trip!

Love this! I especially like the adventure trip idea, and not just because it features Crater Lake and Smith Rock…in my backyard!

We loved that area. Crater Lake may be my favorite national park so far.

I like the SPA trip!

I haven’t done a mother-daughter trip yet with my 5-year old, but I’m hoping to do it this year before her THIRD little brother arrives! 🙂 It sounds like so much fun! Eventually I want to do a Jane Austen tour with her, but I think for now, she’d rather we go to an adventure playground. 🙂

A literary tour would definitely be a fun idea

Love these! Ours tend to be anything around food, coffee, or chocolate… 😉

Oh that reminds me of a chocolate tasting I did with her!

Cute! I love the photo of you two in your road trip t-shirts. I live in a house full of males, so I take girls-only trips with my mom. We love it.

Thanks! I imagine mother son trips could be very fun too! It is really just about doing things together.

Love this idea so much. One of my favorite travel memories was travelling with my mom as an adult child of 25 to Paris for the first time. It was a fantastic trip that I wish we could have done more often!

That sounds special! I hope my tween wants to keep our tradition going through her teen years.

I absolutely admire your long distance road trips with Hannah! For now, I try to always go to a nails “spa” with my 6-yr old:) and last year for Mother’s Day we had a yoga teacher come to our house for a mother-daughter private class. This year- we repeated the experience DIY style cause we already know the moves:)

That sounds so sweet! We would love mother-daughter yoga!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Hannah is just darling, first of all. I know Lucia would love the wild ponies of Chincoteague (so would I) and Gettysburg. You’ve given me some great ideas!

Yay!! And thank you!

I have only done city trips alone with my girls (I guess I’m most comfortable navigating cities by myself). I think a wildlife one sounds great though – I would love to see the Chincoteague ponies!

Wildlife ones are great for animal lovers

My favorite mother-daughter trip would be to the spa. My daughter is super girly and loves getting her toes, nails and hair done.

Mother Daughter Horseback camp at the Sugar and Spice Ranch at the Cowboy Capital of the world… Bandera TX!

Oh that sounds so fun and absolutely perfect for a horse loving girl too!

I'm a Brit living in the US. I dread Mother's Day because my mom lives over 3,000 miles away.

  • My 93-year-old mom lives over 3,000 miles from me across the Atlantic.
  • Mother's Day is hard because I don't get to celebrate with her.
  • I envy families who are together on Mother's Day and can make their moms feel special in person.

Insider Today

In the run-up to Mother's Day this year, my inbox has been flooded with holiday specials. They're mostly from restaurants, florists , candle stores — and medispas offering discount Botox .

Every time I receive a new email with Mother's Day in the subject line, I can't help but feel sad.

Some companies have given people the option to unsubscribe from the content in case, like me, they're triggered by it. But there is so much other spam you can't filter out that it makes little difference.

My mom lives in northern England, 3,300 miles from my home in New York. I moved to the US from my native UK nearly two decades ago. I never get to celebrate Mother's Day with her anymore.

I don't want to go for Mother's Day lunch

She's 93 and can't visit me due to her health and the cost of travel insurance. I can't fly to meet her because airplane tickets to the UK are expensive. We can only splash out once a year for Mom's birthday in late summer.

As a result, I prefer to ignore Mother's Day altogether — even if it means telling my kids and their dad not to buy me gifts or a greeting card.

Related stories

My husband suggested we go out for Mother's Day brunch a few years ago. "Everybody does it," he said. I declined. I would only get upset if we were surrounded by families toasting their moms as she sat beaming at the table.

I can't even escape it at home. Our wonderful next-door neighbors have a big grill-out every year to honor their beloved matriarch. They have a huge family, and a dozen cars will park outside on the street,

Relatives from multiple generations mingle in the backyard. The squeals of young children's carry over the fence as they play. I wish my kids could enjoy the same tradition with my mom.

Kind strangers unwittingly conjur the same kind of emotions. People I don't know often say "Happy Mother's Day" as they walk by or serve me in a store. I smile, but my heart aches.

My mom would think I being ridiculous about the holiday

As for my mother-in-law, 94, she lives 2,400 miles away in Portland, Oregon . My somewhat cynical husband isn't bothered about them getting together. He said his mom and he have agreed that Mother's Day is a "Hallmark holiday" that boosts the profits of jewelers and manufacturers of face cream.

If Mom were reading this, she'd tell me — with a typical British stiff upper lip — not to be silly. She'd say she was thrilled to receive the card I sent her from across the pond and the delivery of a plant from her local nursery.

I'm luckier than others who no longer have their mom in their lives, whether she's passed away or they are estranged . But I can't hide my feelings.
