How to Install Safari on Linux

Ramces Red

When you think of the major web browsers, chances are that Apple’s Safari features somewhere on your list. However, despite its popularity, Safari has never been officially released for Linux – particularly strange considering macOS and Linux both have historical ties to UNIX.

If you’re a Linux user and a web developer and need to provide support for the Safari browser, the good news is that there are some workarounds to get Safari up and running on Linux. Although you’ll be restricted to Safari 5, this version still has everything you need for surfing the Web.

There are two potential workarounds for installing Safari on Linux: using WINE (the compatibility layer, not the drink) or using WINE and PlayOnLinux , which provides a graphical user interface (UI) for WINE.

As an added bonus, you can use WINE and PlayOnLinux to install many other Windows applications beside Safari.

WINE is one of the most well-known Linux packages and is found in most Software Center/Package managers. In Ubuntu (or Ubuntu-based distro), you can install WINE with the following command:

One thing to note is that the WINE version in Ubuntu is pretty outdated. If you want to get the latest stable version of WINE, do the following:

  • Add the WINE key.
  • Add the repository.

The above command is for Ubuntu 21.10 (impish). If you are using version other than Ubuntu 21.10, change the name accordingly (like “bionic,” “xenial,” etc.)

  • Update the system:
  • Lastly, install the stable version of WINE.

WINE will now be installed. For more information, refer to our guide on installing WINE on Linux .

While using a native Safari 5 client in Linux can be helpful for some users. This particular version of the browser can present some issues, especially if you are visiting modern websites. This is mostly because the Safari 5 browser no longer receives new updates from Apple.

As a result, using this version of Safari can result in either broken or insecure websites. For example, it is not possible to access YouTube from a native Safari 5 client.

Linux Safari Install 10 Incompatible Youtube

One way of dealing with this issue is to use a modern browser and convert it to look and feel like the Apple browser. For example, it is possible to take Firefox and theme it to look like the modern version of Safari.

Converting Firefox to look like Safari is relatively simple with the WhiteSur-gtk theme for Firefox.

  • Download the theme by either downloading the ZIP file from the author’s Github page or running the following command:

  • Extract the repository’s ZIP file to the current working directory and go inside it by running the following commands:

  • Run the initial install script, which will prepare all the necessary files and dependencies for your Firefox theme, by running the following command:
  • Run the Firefox theme installer by typing the following:
  • Doing this will, then, automatically copy all the necessary settings and configurations for your Firefox client.

It’s important to note that the installer will not run if Firefox is currently running. Once done, however, you can reload the browser to look at your converted Firefox instance.

Is it possible to install Safari in Linux using the Mac installer?

Sadly, no. While it is possible to install DMG files in Linux, the native Safari browser for macOS is purpose built to only run for that operating system, as the browser uses Mac-specific functions which allow it to integrate well into macOS. For example, the Quick Note feature in Safari relies on external Apple programs to work properly.

I already have WINE installed. Is it alright to install PlayOnLinux on top of it?

Yes! By default, PlayOnLinux creates its own set of virtual drives where it places the custom WINE version that it uses. Because of that, it is safe to install PlayOnLinux alongside with a mainline version of WINE. For example, when you install Safari through PlayOnLinux, it creates a clean sandbox where it installs all the programs and WINE patches that it needs.

Further, this approach also means that removing a program that you previously installed through PlayOnLinux is incredibly simple: press “Right click” on the “Safari 5” entry in the main menu and select “Remove.”

Is it possible to remove the Safari theme and return Firefox to the default?

Yes! It is relatively simple to remove the Safari theme and revert your Firefox installation back to its default settings. First, go back to the White Sur directory that you extracted. From there, you then need to type the following command: ./tweaks.sh -f -r && ./install.sh -u .

Doing that will allow you to remove all the Safari-related files for Firefox as well as delete all theme files from your machine. With that done, the last thing that you need to do is to restart the browser to reload your default settings.

Safari is not natively available for Linux, but you can still install it by using a compatibility layer called Wine. This allows you to run Windows applications on Linux. Here’s how to install Safari on Linux with Wine:

Step 1: Download and Install Wine

The first step is to download and install Wine. In most cases, you can find Wine in the software repositories of your Linux distribution. Open up your terminal and type the following command:

sudo apt-get install wine

Step 2: Download Safari for Windows

Next, you need to download Safari for Windows from the official Apple website. Visit the official page of Apple and head for the download section. Look for the suitable download for Windows OS of Safari and download it.

Step 3: Install Safari on Linux

Once you have downloaded Safari, navigate to your downloads folder and find the Safari installation file. Right-click on it and select “Open With Wine Windows Program Loader”. This will automatically trigger Wine to run and install Safari on your Linux machine.

Note: During the installation process, Wine might ask you to install additional Windows components. You should install them to ensure Safari runs smoothly on your Linux machine.

Step 4: Run Safari on Linux

Once you have installed Safari on Linux, you can launch it by finding it in the programs menu of Wine. Or, you can use the command line to launch Safari using the following command:

wine “C:\Program Files\Safari\Safari.exe”

It’s important to note that the user experience with Safari on Linux might differ from what you are used to on a Mac or Windows. Additionally, running Safari on Linux, via Wine, can take up some resources which can affect the performance of the system.

In conclusion, installing Safari on Linux is possible via a compatibility layer called Wine. After completing the above-mentioned steps, you can access the excellent features of Safari on Linux, however, you must keep in mind that it is not an official method and that the performance may differ.

Is it possible to install Safari on Ubuntu 14.04?

I would like to debug a browser compatibility issue with Safari. I don't have a Mac and Windows. I am interested if its still possible to install Safari on Ubuntu 14.04. I've tried using Wine 1.6.2 by installing the last version of Safari that works with Windows. While it installs, it does not launch.

  • I'm afraid I haven't found anything that works reliably. I tried both @abdulla-nilam's WineTricks answer, and also PlayOnLinux. The latter gave better instructions but both ended up with the same result: An old version of Safari that crashes on half the pages I tried loading. –  Michael Scheper Nov 4, 2016 at 23:16

Safari uses webkit as web browser engine. You can use epiphany-browser which also uses webkit engine for debugging and checking the compatibility:

  • 3 Thanks, @5chdn. To clarify, we need to run apt-get install winetricks and then winetricks , from the command line, to see the dialogues above. For me, it installed Safari 5.0, which blew up the first time I tried running it, but worked the second time. Unfortunately, my keyboard remappings don't work in it, but this is good enough. –  Michael Scheper Nov 4, 2016 at 22:51
  • 1 ... actually, it crashes on half the pages I try to load. I might need to borrow a Mac from somewhere. –  Michael Scheper Nov 4, 2016 at 22:55
  • Note, that the latest supported Safari version for Windows (and wine) is 5.1, while we are at v13 since sept. 2019 –  rubo77 Apr 22, 2020 at 4:30

StackOverflow has some answers but I am trying to find out if they're up-to-date. EDIT: yea, they're out of date. Safari on Windows ended when Safari 6 started. Maybe it can be done legally or ethically in virtualbox.

(The remainder is wrong if you want OSX >=6.0) Basically, install Wine and possibly playonlinux, but I don't know if you can get Safari 9. So far I just found out you can get Safari 5. Here's a page of advice without a date on it.

Maybe one of these will work! Haven't tried it yet ....

  • 1 Note that using Wine won't help - Safari for Windows has been dead for over a year, and I mean dead with no security updates or support... they stopped at Safari 5 or 6 I believe... so you lose a lot of features and support that you probably seek –  Thomas Ward ♦ Dec 6, 2015 at 3:59
  • I've been trying to find an OSX virtualbox for a very long time. ☹ Even Microsoft has worked out that if they want people to develop sites for their stupid browser, they need to make it free and easy to test on. No wonder so few of my clients care about Safari anymore. –  Michael Scheper Nov 4, 2016 at 23:13

Installing Apple’s Safari Web Browser in Ubuntu Linux

While Apple may be pushing Safari on Windows , the company has historically ignored Linux users. Fortunately, thanks to WINE , which allows you to run Windows applications without installing Windows, it's not too difficult to get Safari running in Linux.

The Ubuntu Unleashed blog recently posted instructions on how to install Safari using WINE on Ubuntu , but with a few tweaks, you should be able to get it running on just about any Linux distribution. The instructions even include installing the Flash plugin for Safari in WINE.

Of course if you aren't looking for the Apple-specific front-end, WebKit, the engine that powers Safari, is also used in Konqueror. ( Update: As Douglas Greenshields points out in the comments below, WebKit is actually based on KHTML (Konqueror's web browser), and it is not technically part of Konqueror .)

However, if it's the Safari interface you're after, WINE is your answer. The only real dependency, aside from WINE, is that you install Microsoft's Core Fonts, but you'll need them for just about any application running under WINE.

I tested the install out of curiosity and it worked without a hitch. As you can see in the screenshot above, I've got the Windows version of Safari running in Ubuntu and the Flash plugin works just fine. The main menu items are a little bit off, but it's still usable and surprisingly snappy.

How to use Apple Safari on Linux

Today, in this article, we show you how to use Apple Safari on Linux . One of the most used and secure browsers, Safari is made to let you browse the internet with the highest level of privacy protection. For Linux, this browser has not yet been formally released. While Safari has not yet been made available for the Linux OS, we feel that both the Linux OS and macOS have a long history with UNIX. The good news is that there is a guide which can help you use Safari on your Linux computer if you are a Linux user or web developer who wants Safari browser support.

Macintosh and Windows operating systems, as well as the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad all support Apple Safari as their default browser. Based on the idea that the best browser is one that “gets out of your way and lets you just enjoy the web”, Safari was created. The WebKit engine, which is at the heart of Apple’s Safari browser, handles tasks such as displaying visuals, rendering fonts, running Javascript, and choosing the page layout.

Future iterations of Safari are anticipated to use Apple’s WebKit2 engine. This engine has a split process architecture that is integrated directly into the framework, allowing web browser processes to run as separate processes in the operating system for greater stability and security. There are basically two distinct methods to install Safari on Linux. Use PlayOnLinux, which provides a graphical user interface (UI) for WINE, or WINE (the compatibility layer, not the drink). Below are the steps to run Apple Safari on Linux.

Steps to Run Apple Safari on Linux

To start using Apple Safari on Linux, launch a terminal window. When hitting the keys Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard, you can launch a terminal window on the Linux desktop. Alternatively, look under “Terminal” in the application menu. To use Apple Safari on your Linux computer, follow the step-by-step instructions below with the terminal window open and ready to use.

Step 1: First, use the wget download command to download Windows Safari 5 installer EXE to your Linux PC. This installer EXE makes it possible to install Safari under Wine on Linux.

wget http://appldnld.apple.com/Safari5/041-5487.20120509.INU8B/SafariSetup.exe

Step 2: After downloading the software to your computer, use the wine command to start up the installation wizard.

wine SafariSetup.exe

Step 3: As Safari.exe Setup Wizard open, you will see “ Welcome to the Safari installer ”. Read the summary that the wizard shows. When you finish reading it, find the “ Next ” button and click on it with the mouse.

Step 4: By selecting the “ Next ” button, you will see the Apple Safari License Agreement. Select the “ I accept the terms of the license agreement ” and select the option “ Next ” button to continue to the next page in the installer.

Step 5: following the license agreement, you will see several checked boxes. If you want Safari to be the default browser on Linux , leave the boxes checked. Otherwise, uncheck everything.

Step 6: On the next page, you will need to tell the Safari Assistant where to install the software. Leave it as the default or, if you are an expert, look for a place to install it. Then finish the installation.

Final Words

We hope you like our article about how to run Apple Safari on Linux. Software and applications developed by Apple are known to work well with Apple hardware. Safari is the same way. The appropriate operating systems and hardware requirements were taken into account when the company created this web browser. Automatically works fine on Mac computers, iPhones and iPads.

Safari is a default web browser program from Apple, originally developed for macOS, it later found its way into the iOS operating system and then the Windows environment. Compared to Chrome based around the same Webkit rendering engine, Safari performs better in speed and user experience process. It differentiates itself with its browsing and favorite sharing abilities. Here provides some tips about Safari for Linux , Windows and Mac for you.

  • Part 1. Safari for Windows and Alternatives Overview
  • Part 2. Safari for Mac and Alternatives Overview

Part 3. Safari for Linux

Part 4. more tips about safari browser, part 1. safari browser for windows.

Initially released for Windows XP with service pack 2 or later during the version 3 development cycle of Safari, version 4 for Windows, which offered support for the then newly released Windows 7 and included a Windows native UI compared to the Mac style one of the previous version. The final Windows version of the software to be released was version 5, which brought with it the novel Safari Reader which aggregated a webpage article into a pop out panel with just the text, stripping out images, ads and so on for easier reading of online articles, development of the windows version of Safari ended at version 5.17 on 9th May 2012.

Safari itself has gone on to version 11 in the current macOS, but the Windows version is abandoned here. If you are looking Safari alternative for Windows, the following table will be helpful.

As we can see, at least on Windows, Safari struggles in comparison to the alternatives, mainly because its development ceased in 2012. Whilst at the time is was competitive, and arguably one of the best browsers available, today it is simply not a viable platform for web browsing on Windows, the others offer so much more.

Part 2: Safari Browser for Mac

Safari was first developed for macOS in 2007, and has been in constant development since then, adding some innovative features long the way like Safari Reader and the Top Sites functionality, the current iteration at the time of writing is version 7. What version of Safari you can use, and how you go about installing it on your Mac, very much depends on which flavor of operating system you are running.

For those running macOS version 10.6 or lower, then the latest release of safari 5 is your only option. This is because from version 6 onwards, Apple has integrated Safari into the operating system itself, and as such it is no longer available separately. For those running macOS Lion and Mountain Lion, then Safari is not only bundled with your OS, it is an integral part of it, and as such, if you have this operating system, you have Safari 6, any updates come through Apple update as with other software.

It is a similar story with macOS Mavericks, Safari 7 was designed into the operating system from the ground up, it is not available as an update for any other version and if you have macOS Mavericks, you have Safari 7. Also matching Safari 6, any updates come through the Apple update system within the operating system.

In contrast to the windows platform, here on home ground Safari is at the cutting edge of browser development and easily holds its own against the competition. Internet Explorer bowed out of the fight a while ago hence is not included here.

Safari itself has not been officially released for Linux, the omission can seem a little puzzling, as macOS and Linux share a UNIX based heritage, and a version of Safari for Linux would be a much less demanding task that, for instance, the Windows version that existed for a while. However, the demise of the Windows version suggests that Apple are no longer interested in the market beyond their own environment, so a Linux version is not only currently not available, it is unlikely to ever be.

Having said that, where there is a will, there is a way, as the saying goes, and when it comes to Safari on Linux, this holds up. It isn't straightforward, and is restricted to Safari 5, but it is possible.

There is a reasonable simple way to accomplish it, and that is to use PlayonLinux, the package that allows you to run certain Windows programs in Linux. After launching PlayonLinux, hit the Install button, which launched a dialogue box for choosing what you wish to install. On the left there is a list of categories, choosing Internet from that list gives you a wide selection of applications to choose from, pick Safari from the list.

Hitting Install with safari selected will initiate the download process for Safari for Windows, which goes through the familiar install process, be sure to note the instructions to deselect bonjour for windows, and unless you have already downloaded the package yourself, select "download Safari" when asked where to install it from. After a bit of a wait Safari will install, and you will have access to Safari, albeit an older version, on Linux through Wine.

Comparison of Safari, Chrome and Firefox

Safari browser:.

Safari first appeared in 2003 and has been on a journey of constant improvement and development since then. Based on the webkit engine, Safari launched on the premise of being the fastest browser around, and although it doesn't really carry that claim into the present, the software has seen some real innovation appear in its journey. Safari has a unique take on favorites and most visited sites, and Safari Reader allows web based articles to be read as you would a PDF or other e-book, stripped of the superfluous ads and other presentation and giving you the text in an easily consumable format.

safari for ubuntu

Chrome Browser:

A relatively late addition to the scene, Chrome is Google's entry into the browser market. Launched in 2008 and promoted with a focus on speed and simplicity, Chrome was, like Safari, built upon the webkit engine, however since version 28 it has been powered by the blink engine, a variation of webkit. Despite its relatively short life, Chrome has seen extremely rapid development focused on security, speed and usability.

Innovations along the way have seen the merging of the address bar and search box (a browser first), automatic translation which now operated between 52 separate languages, synchronization of bookmarks, history and browser settings across devices through a Google account, and Google has implemented a system of constantly amended centralized lists of malware and phishing sites that Chrome regularly updates itself from to warn users in real time before they visit a potentially dangerous site. Chrome has also benefitted from the implementation of the plug in and extension facilities, providing customization second only to Firefox, with a huge range of utilities, usability enhancement and other additions to make the browser fit to the user's needs perfectly.

linux safari

Firefox Browser:

Firefox is an open source browser developed by Mozilla, first launched in 2002 as a beta and 2004 as version 1, Firefox has been at the top of the most popular browser lists for most of its lifetime. Like the others here, Firefox has seen continuous development to meet the changing internet standards as well as user expectations, which has seen the move to tabbed browsing with the ability to see a thumbnail of each tab, constantly updated and robust security features, and others.

However, Firefox is perhaps best known for its customization. Although other browsers have implemented third party plugins, extensions and themes to compete, Firefox has far more available than any other browser, and the ability to tailor each installation to the user with such a huge variety of options that is one of the main reasons Firefox currently stands as the third most popular browser in the world.

Best Free Linux Distributions for Desktops and Servers

Ankush Das

Almost every Linux distribution is available to download for free. However, there are some editions (or distros) may ask for a fee in order to purchase it. For instance, the ultimate edition of Zorin OS is not free and needs to be purchased.

If you already know about some of the best Linux distributions available, you probably do not need this list. It is meant for absolute beginners who may have had a misconception that Linux distros need to be purchased.

So, in this article, I focus on the free Linux distributions that you can try, whether its for general purpose home usage, i.e. desktop or for a production-grade server.

Top Free Linux Distributions for Desktop

Ubuntu 20 04 Desktop

No matter what, it is highly likely that you may have heard about Ubuntu distribution. On paper, it is the most popular Linux distribution out there, both on desktop and the server.

For desktop, it provides a unique user experience which is also easy to use. If you happen to be a Windows user, you may not find it familiar but it does offer the ease of installing various popular software. You will also find several essential tools pre-installed.

You might want to read our tutorial on installing Ubuntu for your desktop if this is your preferred choice.

2. Linux Mint

Mint 20 Screenshot

Linux Mint is potentially better than Ubuntu for a couple of reasons . And, I would definitely recommend it to former Windows users who do not want a completely different user interface.

Linux Mint will provide a familiar user interface to Windows and runs quite impressive on both modern and old hardware configurations.

You will find all essential tools pre-installed, out-of-the-box customization options, and it is quite easy to install/remove new software as well.

3. elementary OS

Elementary Os Hera

One of the most beautiful Linux distributions is elementary OS. It is based on Ubuntu — so you get all the advantages of using Ubuntu along with a unique user experience.

You might find the user experience inspired from the macOS but as you use it, you may find it better with their upcoming releases that have more attention to details. It may not have a lot of tools pre-installed but covers some basic additions. It is also easy to install and remove software on elementary OS.

4. Zorin OS

File Explorer Zorin Os 15 Lite

Zorin OS is yet another fantastic free Linux distribution for users comfortable with Windows originally.

You get different editions of Zorin (if you want it for old hardware or modern) like Lite and Ultimate. It is free to download but if you need the Ultimate edition (which just comes with a lot of essential apps + some games), you need to pay a small fee.

It is also based on Ubuntu, so it is easy to use and you can install various software tools without any hassle.

Pop Os Stock

Pop!_OS is an incredibly polished free Linux distribution by System76 . In general, they made it for their own laptops and desktop offerings and that is why it is easily compatible with the latest and greatest hardware.

It isn’t tailored to run on older hardware (specifically), but if Ubuntu runs on a machine, this will work on it as well. The user interface is very similar to Ubuntu but you get a fine-tuned experience with some additional features like auto-tiling windows.

You can check out one of our reviews on Pop OS to learn more about it.

Top Free Linux Distributions for Server

6. ubuntu server.

Ubuntu 20 10 Kernel

As I mentioned above, Ubuntu is a popular choice for both server and desktop users. Of course, you need to keep in mind the system requirements before deploying it on a production server.

When compared to other Linux distributions, most of the hosting providers facilitate easy installation of Ubuntu OS and mostly supporting the latest LTS releases. So, it is easier to go for an Ubuntu server set up, even if you never used Ubuntu on your desktop.

Cent Os Virtualbox

CentOS is yet another popular choice for Linux system administrators. In fact, a lot of system administrator courses take the example of a CentOS server to teach and train.

It is a community-driven project that is robust to use and needs a minimal learning curve. You can always refer to the official documentation when needed.

8. openSUSE

Opensuse 15 1

openSUSE is a popular enterprise choice when it comes to free Linux distributions for system administrators, developers, and other users.

You will find a host of essential open-source tools pre-installed to manage and deploy a stable production server. There’s a rolling release edition and a regular release version for desktop, so you’ve got choices to make.

Debian 10 Buster

Debian is the original Linux distribution which made Ubuntu and every Ubuntu-based distribution possible. So, of course, Debian has a good history of stability and compatibility for any type of server configuration.

You might want to go through the official documentation but if you have used Ubuntu, you should be able to easily pick up things that you didn’t know about Debian.

7 Fedora Vm Install 1

Fedora is a powerful and flexible operating system available for both desktop and server. For server, it can prove to be quite reliable and useful.

It lets you easily administer and control your server deployment. It will be interesting to learn about the modularity it provides, meaning — you can upgrade your OS without needing to update your applications. Explore more about Fedora’s server edition on their official website.

Wrapping Up

Now that you know almost every free Linux distribution is powerful and capable enough for desktop and servers, feel free to choose what you like.

You do not need to pay a premium unless it is a special edition of some distribution that you want to support. In either case, you should consider donating to the projects if you like using the free distributions.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click the Privacy Report button in your toolbar for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

You know it when you see it: here are some movies that got sex scenes right.

It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist.

What makes a good sex scene? It can be easier spot bad sex, but Aisha Harris, Christina Tucker, Ronald Young, Jr. and I tried to focus on the good this week on Pop Culture Happy Hour. You can listen to our full conversation here. (We didn't originally plan for this episode to run the same week as our episode about Challengers , which is out in theaters now, but it's a happy coincidence, since that film has gotten a lot of attention — probably too much, relative to its other merits — for the sex scenes involving its three leads. It's really very good .)

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'Challengers'

Movie Reviews

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'challengers'.

It's often very obvious when a sex scene is bad, just like when a sex scene in a book is bad. It can get so uncomfortable to watch that you have to leave the room (and not in a way that feels true to the story). One of my personal tells for a bad sex scene is when all I can think about is how hard the actors are trying to persuade me that the characters are having a good time. For example, there has been much good discussion in recent years about Showgirls being a more interesting and competent project than it originally got credit for, but in that one pool scene (if you know it, you know it), all I can see is the effort.

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

It's not always as clear which scenes are good . That's partly because they serve so many different functions, all of which look different, and all of which can be effective. Furthermore, you don't want to confuse whether a sex scene is used well in a film with whether it's hot to you personally, despite the fact that there is overlap between those considerations.

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

Here's what I mean: When Aisha talks about the sequence near the beginning of Magic Mike's Last Dance , it's not irrelevant that the scene is, to her (and to me), hot. But it also makes sense in the context of the film and the franchise, partly because of the way it sets up the power dynamic between Mike (Channing Tatum) and Max (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike is older now, he knows more, and the way he approaches a lap dance is actually different than in earlier movies.

And not all good sex scenes are hot in the same ways. The one I mentioned in the episode, from the romantic drama Love & Basketball , is sexy, yes. But it's also a scene between young adults (the talented basketball players Monica and Quincy, played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps), and as such, it incorporates a tentativeness that's not present in Magic Mike's Last Dance , to say the least. As Ronald pointed out during our discussion, that sex scene is quite different from one that takes place later in Monica and Quincy's relationship, when they're older and know each other better. That certainly feels true to real life, but it's not always reflected in Hollywood films, where I would tentatively estimate that 90% of on-screen sex is more idealized and thus less intimate than real-life sex, in part because it isn't allowed to change over the course of a relationship.

'Like it or not, we live in Oppenheimer's world,' says director Christopher Nolan

Movie Interviews

'like it or not, we live in oppenheimer's world,' says director christopher nolan.

Even further from the hotness of the lap dance scene is Ronald's pick: the imagination of Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) running wild in Oppenheimer. While her husband (Cillian Murphy) is being interrogated, she pictures him having sex with his mistress, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). It goes by quickly enough that it might seem like a Christopher Nolan flourish for flourish's sake, but it serves the purpose of letting you feel her pain over her husband's affair. Her relationship with Robert doesn't look especially romantic in the film, let alone sexually charged; she finds herself consumed by the idea that he was having hot sex with this other woman, and she locks eyes with her vision of a naked Tatlock and finds herself tormented. It's not really the intent of the scene to titillate the audience, just to give specificity to the shape of Kitty's preoccupation with the affair.

What makes a good sex scene?

What makes a good sex scene?

Christina raised another really important point, which is that sex scenes also collide with viewers at very specific moments. Her example from Bound , and the scenes between Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and Corky (Gina Gershon), touches on (among other things) her own history. It's an underappreciated aspect of the sex-in-movies discourse: representation matters in these scenes as much as anywhere else. I always wish I saw more sex scenes in movies that featured a broader variety of body types; it's still really rare to see ones that feature anybody who is even average sized. This is one of the reasons I'm curious about the upcoming season of Bridgerton , which places its focus on the gorgeous and curvaceous Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Good sex scenes are like any other kind of good filmmaking, honestly: it comes down to execution with purpose and care, done relative to whatever the function of the scene might be.

Whether that's spiciness or conflict or relationship growth or (as in the case of Bound ) setting up a steamy neo-noir story that wouldn't be the same if it weren't hot as heck, form follows function, ideally.
