1. how to prepare for a volleyball travel tournament: 3 tips for success.

volleyball tournament

If you're a new volleyball athlete or a seasoned one, there are many tips that can make volleyball travel tournaments a lot easier than you think. Here are 3 tips to help make your volleyball travel tournament easy, fun and enjoyable.

Pack smart: Make sure you look up the weather beforehand, and always bring jacket and sweatpants for the volleyball facility, it can be cold! Bring a blanket in your backpack in case there’s open sitting areas during your off time.

Bring a checklist of the essentials in your volleyball backpack: Make sure you have all the essentials for your volleyball game: your uniform, shoes, hair tie, knee pads, water bottle, and ball (if your coach requires it).

Stay hydrated and fueled: Drink plenty of water and electrolytes before, during, and after your travel to avoid dehydration and low energy. Eat healthy and balanced meals and snacks that provide you with enough energy and nutrients. Stay away from greasy, spicy, sugary, and processed foods.

*Bonus Tip: Bring a case of water and snacks for your hotel room so you stay hydrated and feeling good. It is even better if you can get breakfast to eat in your hotel room. The healthier you can eat during tournaments, the better.

We suggest things like:

Boiled eggs

Protein shakes

Cottage Cheese

Cheese Sticks

You can bring these items with you from home, find a grocery store nearby, or place an Amazon order for delivery to your hotel.

I hope these tips help you have a wonderful travel volleyball tournament. Have fun!

Our travel teams have two options based on player skill level; Black (Open) Royal (Club) and usually have a season that runs from December through April with multiple practices per week. Our Black teams will also participate in either USAV or AAU Nationals in June and will take a small break until mid May after their final tournaments.

Participating in travel volleyball is a commitment which will mean attending tournaments on the weekends (a combination of single day and multi-day tournaments).  Single day tournaments are typically an all day event depending on format, while multi-day tournaments usually require going out of town beginning Friday evening through either Sunday or Monday (depending if the tournament is a 2 or 3 day tournament). Some tournaments that are three days can also begin on Saturday and end on Mondays.

Travel costs associated with out of town tournaments are NOT included in projected team fees. This includes travel, lodging and food.

How do I know which age group my child should play in?

The tryouts page includes a definition of player age groups based on date of birth.

Players are allowed to select one age group higher than they would be based on their birth date ie a player who should play 13's for their season could choose to tryout for 14's if they believe their skill level is high enough.

In a rare occasion if the club feels a player is able to play higher than one age group then the board would contact their parent/guardian to discuss the options.

When are tryouts usually held?

Tryouts are generally held in the month of September and October with the Open and Club/Non Travel levels separated.

How often do teams practice?

Teams will hold scheduled practices at a minimum two times per week. Coaches may decide to supplement their schedule with an additional practice on occasion or may decide to begin their season holding three practices a week throughout the first month of the season. Practice times are generally either 5:30-7:00 or 7:00-9:00.

How is a team's schedule determined?

Next Revolution's directors select common schedules for our Open, Club, Amethyst and Developmental level teams. Some Open teams may have select tournaments based on the team's talent level and players who are looking to play at the collegiate level and need recruiting opportunities.

How many players are on a team?

The number of players on a team can vary however generally have between 10-12 players.  A total cost is calculated for each team depending on numerous factors such as tournament schedule/entry cost, length of season, player gear package, number of coaches, travel expenses for coaches, etc.

Once the total team cost is determined, it is divided equally by the number of players on that team.  Deposits and payments are non-refundable, as accepting a position on a team is a commitment to share in the total cost of that team for the full season.  Final costs are calculated as soon as all rosters are complete and the tournament schedule has been determined. WHO WILL TRAIN MY PLAYER?

Next Revolution Volleyball is home to a knowledgeable, experienced and successful staff of coaches with a wide variety of volleyball backgrounds. Our club includes coaches who have played at the Division I, II and III levels and coaches who have experience coaching at the middle school, JV, Varsity and college levels. Several of our coaches have also had an opportunity to participate in postseason play at National level tournaments like AAU Nationals in Orlando Florida. Our coaches attend annual coaching conventions, workshops and clinics to continue to stay current in their knowledge of the sport. We encourage you to read more about each of our coaches on their individual team pages.

Next Revolution Volleyball requires coaches to be background checked as well as IMPACT and Safesport certified in accordance with USA Volleyball and Old Dominion Region standards. Coaches are also certified through the CDC "Heads Up Concussion" concussion training annually.

How far away are tournaments?

Single day tournaments attended by Next Revolution teams are generally within 90 minutes of Roanoke, though some teams may travel to locations such as Richmond.

Other tournaments can be as far away as Florida for our Open teams or as close as Virginia Beach. Each team's schedule is communicated very early to help with planning for each family.

What do USAV, AAU and ODR mean?

USAV (USA Volleyball) is the primary governing body of volleyball in the country. Many tournaments attended by Next Revolution teams are sanctioned by USAV.

The ODR (Old Dominion Region) is the specific region within USAV that Next Revolution is a part of based on our geographic location. All players must register with USAV/ODR and AAU while completing their required online modules in order to participate in the travel season.

All NRV coaches (age 18 and older) are required to undergo a background check through USA Volleyball as well as complete training through SafeSport .

AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) is another sports organization that provides their own sanctioned tournaments, coaching requirements, and coverage which our teams also participate in.

JVA (Junior Volleyball Association) much like AAU provides their own sanctioned tournaments, coaching requirements, and coverage which our teams also participate in.

If I am selected for a team what happens?

Next Revolution requires that all players submit an initial deposit in order to secure their roster spot. This deposit is non-refundable and a part of each player's contract as this is a commitment being made to your team.

Anyone who needs assistance may contact us at [email protected] to discuss alternate payment schedules, etc. prior to further installments being due .  We are happy to work with families that need alternate arrangements made; we just ask that you reach out to us.

Are there any fundraising options?

Next Revolution works to provide several fundraisers throughout the season. The local Shamrock Festival in March also provides players with a fundraiser through selling advertising to local businesses.  Their sponsorship form is available on our Forms/Policies page.

WELCOME TO THE MOSCOW KNIGHTS VOLLEYBALL HOMEPAGE

Welcome MKV players and families. To get going on player registration, follow the instructions below.

USAV REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

The following teams will need do some required online registration to prepare for upcoming USAV tournaments: U12 BLUE, U12 GOLD, U14 BLUE , U14 GOLD and U17 GOLD. Below are step by step instructions, along with important registration links. PLEASE COMPLETE THESE STEPS IN ORDER, to avoid confusion. The only exception to this order is the HIGHLY IMPORTANT Step #5 (signing up for tournaments), which we encourage you to do WHILE you are taking care of the other registration details.

Step #1: Register Online for MKV

Complete online registration through the REGISTER: MOSCOW KNIGHTS VOLLEYBALL link below. This is an online "repeat" of the paperwork that you signed at the beginning of the season. Sorry for the repetition, but all documents are required to be online to participate in USAV tournaments. This process should only take you a couple of minutes.

Step #2: Accept Club Assignment

Click the “ACCEPT CLUB ASSIGNMENT” link below to register with USAV & EVRA. This link will take you to Sports Engine (SE). If you do not have a SE account, you will be prompted to setup a household account before you can continue registering your athlete(s). Then, you will be able to register your players. This registration will guide you through the process of purchasing the required memberships (23-24 ERVA Junior Player & 23-24 USAV Junior Player). The cost for both of these memberships is $65. Once you have purchased these memberships, your USAV/ERVA memberships will be tethered with MKV, which will allow us to roster your player for USAV tournaments.

ACCEPT CLUB ASSIGNMENT

Step #3: player scorekeeping clinic.

Have your player complete an online scorekeeping clinic. This course should take less than an hour to complete. Each player will have a unique link to the required coursework. Below are instructions on how to find your player’s coursework:

1. Sign in to Sports Engine (see link below)

2. Under “HOUSEHOLDS”, find your player’s profile. Click “VIEW PROFILE”.

3. Look for a box on the right side of your screen, titled “Evergreen Region Volleyball Association”, and click the blue “View Details” Link. That link will take you to the page where you will find all required coursework.

4. Click on the blue box titles “USA VOLLEYBALL ACADEMY”. You will be directed to the coursework page, where you will find an online course titled “EV24_101 Junior Officiating Training 14U”. Click on the course to begin. Note: your player start and stop as needed (it will save your progress).

5. Siblings cannot take the course together. Each player has a unique link to their own training module, which must be used in order to get credit for the coursework.

6. We strongly recommend that you take a moment to print off the three blank scoresheets (linked below), and have your player fill them out with a pencil as they work through the course. This helps them absorb the material much more easily.

Step #4: uniform check.

Uniform Check! All players must have a uniform (with both white and navy jerseys) to participate in USAV tournaments. If you have not yet ordered a uniform, please do so ASAP and communicate with your coaches about it. The GearUp link is noted below.

MKV GearUp Uniform Purchase Link

Step #5: tournament sign up.

Sign your player(s) up for scheduled tournaments! This is actually an incredibly crucial step for our ability to officially register for tournaments. I know I said go in order, but you can go ahead and get to work on step #5 WHILE you are working on the other steps. We know that families have conflicts with basketball & travel, so we need to know ASAP if we have enough players to participate in upcoming tournaments. Please find your team’s TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE LINK below, and get your player signed up.

PARENTS WITH BASKETBALL PLAYERS:

*We respect parents’ decisions on whether or not their players participate in MKV tournaments.

*We worked hard to schedule MKV practice times so that there would not be any major conflicts for girls who wish to play both volleyball and basketball at the same time. Despite this effort, for most U12/U14 girls there are small school league basketball games scheduled for EVERY SATURDAY through the end of February. Volleyball tournaments in our area are few in number and difficult to get into. For that reason, I urge you to consider communicating with your basketball coaches about your daughter missing occasional basketball games when there is the opportunity to participate in a rare volleyball tournament. If we don’t have enough girls signed up to play a particular tournament, we will have to cancel the tournament for the entire team.

*On a personal note: I know from personal experience that this is a challenge. The coaches and I recognize that this juggling act is difficult and, at times, stressful. There is no way around this rub when it comes to your player doing multiple sports at once. For this reason, most athletes gravitate toward one sport or another by HS. If you feel that you need to keep basketball tournaments a priority over volleyball tournaments for your player, please let your MKV coach know immediately. We will cheerfully respect that decision and will make rotational changes as needed to be able to work around your player’s absence. But from MKV’s standpoint, we want and NEED your player to participate in tournaments as much as possible. Competitive tournament play is essential to player development in the off season.

Youth Club Programs

travel volleyball tournaments

Club Volleyball, also called Travel Volleyball, offers the most advanced and competitive youth volleyball in the area.  Participants have the opportunity to hone their skills playing on teams that compete in regional and national tournaments.  Colleges recruit players from club programs more often than from high school teams.

Club teams are available for both girls and boys starting with Elementary School (U11, U12) going through Middle School (U13, U14) and High School (U15, U16, U17, U18).  In Northern Virginia, most clubs are members of the Chesapeake Region (CHRVA) of the USA Volleyball (USAV) governing organization.  Participants must be USAV members and coaches must be certified.  Some clubs are also members of the American Athletics Union (AAU) and/or the Junior Volleyball Association (JVA) .

For a more detailed information for those new to club volleyball, read the following Guide to Club Volleyball in Northern Virginia .

Our Happy Clients

“Team Travel Source has been a breath of fresh air for our company. They've worked on the event planning side of the business and they know what a hassle managing the housing can be for a small business strictly focused on planning and running the best events. But they've also taught me to appreciate the housing side of the business and understand the major value that it can add when it comes to fully servicing all of our customers' needs, as well as the enhanced negotiating power I can gain by tracking these room nights and estimating our economic impact on a city. I love being able to confidently pass our housing questions over to them knowing that not only will my customers get a knowledgeable and prompt reply, but they also will get the same appreciation and gratitude for their business that I demand of my own team and brand. I know that our business is important to TTS, and I don't just feel it – I see it. I see progress, I see results, and I see profits. It's quickly become a partnership that we cannot live without.” Tina S. | Vice President - Cheer & Dance Competition Company
“Team Travel Source (TTS) has been a friend of the Hilton family of hotels for years. They understand the business from the hotel side, the CVB/Sports Commission side and the tournament organizer side. The entire team is collaborative, responsive and always work to find win-win solutions with our hotels. TTS is one of the best intermediary companies in the sports segment and there is no doubt that will only grow in the coming years! Our Hilton Worldwide Sales team and our hotels around the country are grateful to work with the TTS team!” Jeremy Leifel | Director of Sports Sales | Hilton Worldwide
“We are beyond pleased with the transition to our new housing company, Team Travel Source. This has been one of the easiest years for event housing and the earliest we have been able to accept all teams into the tournaments because they are all housing compliant. TTS has made our jobs easier with very few housing issues and we have been able to focus primarily on the planning of the events. We have had many compliments on their customer service and their work with the clubs to accommodate their needs. I would highly recommend Team Travel Source to anyone looking for a great housing company and we look forward to continuing this great partnership with them!” Kristi C. | Director of Events | Volleyball Tournament Company
"I wanted to give a huge shoutout to Lena Ballard! She exhausted every effort to help me find a solution and was such an absolute joy to talk to on the phone. She went over and above what a customer service rep would normally do! I am so grateful for her efforts!!!" Kim L. | Event Attendee
“Excellent! TTS is the reason we opened our other two hotels after a year of being closed! We take great care of all of our clients but we certainly have an extra special care for TTS!” Jessica Sherbert | Director of Hotel Sales | Marriott Village Orlando
“We couldn't be happier with our transition to the Team Travel Source. They are not only professional, but make every aspect of the lodging process easy and painless. They anticipate and address our needs and the needs of our teams before we even ask the question. Our brand integrity is heightened by our partnership with Team Travel Source. They are simply the best.” Brian F. | President | Soccer Tournament Company
“I’ve worked with Team Travel Source on different sports groups the past few years. I’ve always found them to be very professional and kind to work with. They are a partner with our city and want to work together to get the results needed, making it a team effort. Being a team is a win/win for all parties involved.” Becky Harsch | Director | Kansas City CVB
"TTS gets 10 stars! Their customer service was BEYONG AMAZING! So knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, and also funny! I am so grateful for all their help. " Marjie J. | Event Attendee
“When we had an issue with our last tournament company, it was recommended that we turn to Team Travel Source. Three words that describe TTS-trust, dependability and partnership! We at Southern Hockey Tournaments look forward to partnering with you for many years to come!” Kevin L. | Hockey Tournament Company
“We love working with Team Travel Source. Our 84 volleyball clubs have an expert on their side when booking Regional Championship rooms for their teams. We’re pretty selective when picking partners and Team Travel Source makes the starting line-up every time!” Jen B. | Volleyball Club
“Team Travel Source (TTS) has been a long time partner and friend of Wyndham Hotel and Resorts. Team members at TTS treat the Wyndham Global Sales Organization and our hotel partners with respect, courteousness and deliver excellent results in a consistent manner. TTS utilizes exceptional technology tools while still focusing on the importance of interpersonal relationships and communication, which is so appreciated. In addition to having a spot on our Wyndham Hotel and Resorts Sports Advisory Council, TTS continues to lead the sports travel and housing segment overall with integrity and vision. I am honored to work and partner with Team Travel Source!” Tim Ellis | Director, Global Sales | Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Inc.
“Team Travel Source has a powerhouse team of professionals. They are wonderful to collaborate with and make my job easy. We work together on the annual Baltimore Running Festival with over 25,000 attendees and other successful cheerleading and volleyball events. I’m proud to have them on our team and know that our groups are in great hands with Team Travel Source. They are our partner in every sense of the word and we are lucky to have them in Baltimore!” Christina Ghani | National Sales & Sports Manager | Visit Baltimore
“I want to brag on this organization for the outstanding communication and assistance you provide teams when they sign up. This is spectacular and much appreciated. Thank you again for the super helpful communication!” Ashley G. | Baseball Parent
“Team Travel Source has been a long term and valuable partner with Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. We have collaborated for multiple sporting events in the youth, amateur and team travel capacity. TTS has been involved extensively on multiple sports tournaments nationally. What stands out most is their desire to work closely with their client’s needs and transfer that to a win for the hotel and the client. Their team of professionals are excellent negotiators and knowledgeable of the trends in the industry. They continually find ways to collaborate and ensure the experience is smooth throughout the planning and execution of their events. It’s a pleasure to recommend Team Travel Source as a resource, all of their managers are professional, responsive and a pleasure to work with. They have and continue to be a TOP intermediary partner in Hyatt Hotels for our amateur and youth sports markets.” Pam Alfieri | Group Sales Director | Hyatt Sales Force
“Bluegrass is the largest two day tourney in the country. As the tourney has continued to explode in numbers, we knew we needed help. Team Travel Source has come in with an expert level of knowledge in the hotel industry that allows the tournament directors to put our time and energy in producing a successful event." "Without TTS, we would not have been able to grow the Bluegrass Tournament into the event that it is. The BG Tourney is our lifeline, which is why we trusted TTS to help us make it the best it can be." Ron K. | Volleyball Club & Tournament Owner

A packed stadium in Moscow for the 1952 World Championship encounter between USSR and Poland

International volleyball's most prestigious event opened a new era for the sport, with the top teams in the world gathering every four years to compete for the world title. The inaugural edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship took place in 1952, just three years after the first edition of the men’s tournament. And 70 years later, the Netherlands and Poland will hold the 19th edition of the competition from September 23 through October 15, in what will be the climax of the season for the leading teams in the world.

· Watch all FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022 matches live on Volleyball TV .

The Beginnings

India joined seven European nations at the first edition of the Women's World Championship held in August 1952 in the Soviet capital, Moscow. The tournament was played in a round-robin format and hosts USSR won all seven of their matches to claim the historic title. Poland won silver and Czechoslovakia bronze.

Three venues in the French capital Paris welcomed the second edition in 1956, with the participation of 17 teams, including the first competitors from the western hemisphere – Brazil and the United States. The World Championship was organised in two pool stages and the Soviets again won their 12 matches to claim the world title. In what was key to the final standings, USSR lost the first two sets of the final against Romania, the only two sets they dropped the entire tournament, but came back to win in five. Romania and Poland joined them on the podium with silver and bronze, respectively.

Four years later, in 1960, Brazil organised the first World Championship outside Europe and the first to be played in multiple host cities. 10 teams participated. The Soviet Union cruised undefeated to another title. Japan took silver to become the first non-European medallists. Czechoslovakia earned bronze.

Volleyball added to the Olympic calendar

When volleyball was admitted to the family of Olympic sports for the Tokyo 1964 Games, the four-year World Championship cycle was moved forward by two years resulting in the fourth edition taking place in 1962. Four cities in the then-Soviet republics of Latvia, Russia and Ukraine welcomed the 14 participants. Japan handed USSR their first defeat in the history of the World Championships, won their first title, and remained unbeaten in 10 matches played. The Soviet Union and Poland completed the podium.

Men's and women’s World Championships were to be hosted by different organisers in 1966, however Peru withdrew as an organiser and eventually the women's event took place in Tokyo in January 1967. Because of political tensions, communist bloc countries boycotted the tournament and only four teams competed. Hosts Japan earned another gold, USA finished runners-up and the bronze went to South Korea.

16 teams played at the 1970 World Championship in Bulgaria. The Soviets celebrated their fourth title, again without suffering a loss in the tournament. Their long-standing rivals Japan settled for silver, while North Korea snatched bronze.

The 1974 edition in Mexico set a new participation record. North Korea withdrew, but 23 teams competed in the first World Championship organised in North America. Japan and USSR switched places on the podium, with the Asian team triumphant for the third time. South Korea finished third.

While until that point the various stages of the World Championship were played in round-robin format, the first knockout rounds were introduced in 1978, when the Soviet Union hosted the event for the third time (in Belarus, Latvia and Russia). With Tunisia as the first-ever African participant, the tournament wrote history by including teams from all five continental confederations. In the first-ever semifinals, Cuba stunned USSR in four sets and, in the final, they swept Japan to break the 26-year domination of those two nations and rejoice as world champions, leaving them with bronze and silver, respectively.

The 1982 podium was a complete shocker, with both China and hosts Peru, who met in the final, medalling for the first time. Led by Lang Ping, the first athlete to be honoured as a World Championship MVP, China swept Peru to claim their first world title. Even USA’s third place was considered a surprise.

One Slovak and five Czech venues hosted the 1986 championship in Czechoslovakia. China defended their title. Cuba and Peru completed the podium. The number of participating teams for that and the next three editions was limited to 16. The Soviet Union returned to the throne one last time in 1990 for their fifth title. They defeated hosts China in the final. The bronze went to USA. Cuba reclaimed the crown in 1994, when they swept hosts Brazil in the gold medal match. Russia, the successors of the USSR, took their first World Championship medal by finishing third. Four years later, at Japan 1998, Cuba and Russia retained their positions, leaving China in between with silver.

Introduction of the rally-point system

Germany 2002 was the first World Championship with as many as 24 participating teams and featured the newly-introduced rally-point system with sets to 25. Italy were the surprise winners after a five-set rollercoaster final against USA. Russia took their third consecutive bronze. Reminiscent of their domination during Soviet times, they won back-to-back crowns in 2006 and 2010 in Japan, beating Brazil in five sets in both finals. Serbia and Montenegro, as one country, completed the 2006 podium. Hosts Japan did so in 2010.

In 2014, Italy hosted the World Championship for the first time, while the United States triumphed with their first World Championship gold after overcoming China in the final. Brazil completed the podium. For its most recent edition in 2018, the World Championship went back to Japan for the fifth time. In the first-ever all-European final, Serbia outplayed Italy after a spectacular five-set saga in Yokohama to claim their first title. The bronze went to China.

The 2022 World Championship will be the first to be co-hosted by two countries. Both the Netherlands and Poland will welcome the FIVB’s flagship event for the first time.

The all-time World Championship title race is led by Russia with seven trophies, including USSR’s five. Japan and Cuba have won three apiece. China follow with two. USA, Italy and Serbia have won one world title each. Russia (including USSR) also top the chart on the number of medals won with 13, followed by Japan with seven, China with six and USA with five.

Sam Huang, right, shown during recent action, helped Newton North top Brookline on Tuesday. (Matt Stone/Boston Herald)

The No. 1 Rockets’ (18-2) two losses to second-seeded Newton North (17-3) this season are their only losses in the last four years, which means they’ve only lost to one team despite playing the state’s second-hardest strength of schedule. Even when they aren’t playing their best, they’ve found ways to win through continuous well-rounded efforts and an emphasis on serve receive behind premier libero Owen Ching. Both Brian Cloonan and Luke Lorence have also taken over matches.

If not for the No. 2 Tigers, Needham has made its case as the favorite for a fourth straight title. And if they do pull it off, which we should never count them out from, it would be a masterpiece in a long line of dominance.

But Newton North is very difficult to pick against. Senior Adam Christianson is widely regarded as the state’s best player, surrounded by elite athletes in Simon Vardeh and middles Sam Huang and Peter Reale. Paul Nelson is a top complementary hitter, Joaquin Cuevas-Torres is a reliable setter, and Brady Dwyer rivals Ching as a premier libero.

The two teams are on a collision course to meet in the state final for a second straight year, and it would be almost poetic for the reigning runner-up Tigers to break up Needham’s streak of championships after snapping its 77-game win streak earlier in the year.

Yet, there are plenty of teams that have strong chances of getting in the way.

Familiar foe No. 3 Natick (15-3) has a loud voice in the favorites conversation, featuring a dynamic duo in Branch Barnes and setter Harrison Landry within another deep roster. The RedHawks lost twice to Needham in the regular season but were able to beat every other of the many contenders they played.

No. 4 Milford (13-5) is another scary team and closed the regular season with a win over Newton North, boasting high-powered hitting options in Alex Guerra, Arthur Gomes, and middles Joey Newman and Ryan Franklin. Don’t sleep on No. 5 Methuen (18-2), though, riding the momentum of its first Merrimack Valley Conference title since 1998 behind excellent defense and powerful hitting from seniors James Levesque and Drew Eason.

If Christianson is the state’s top player, No. 6 Winchester (16-4) could have the second-best in Jamie Watt. The Red and Black are one of several dangerous teams to get in Natick’s path, joined by a No. 14 Cambridge (10-10) team that’s better than its record. No. 11 Lexington (14-5) beat Winchester in its current seven-game win streak and a potential meeting in the second round would be the ultimate rubber match between the two.

Needham has the looming threat of a No. 16 North Quincy team (11-9) that entered the year as a notable contender. Then there’s No. 8 Brookline (13-7), which returned a lot from last year’s Cinderella run to the Final Four and took the Rockets to five sets this year. No. 9 Lowell (17-3) is as athletic as any team out there as well to pose a threat.

No. 10 New Bedford (20-0) was the state’s only unbeaten team this year and has immeasurable confidence. The Cleary brothers help make No. 7 BC High (18-2) dangerous, while No. 13 Lincoln-Sudbury (11-7), No. 15 Acton-Boxboro (13-6), No. 18 St. John’s Prep (11-8) and No. 21 St. John’s of Shrewsbury (9-10) have taken down powers in the regular season to stand as potential heart-breakers.

Other teams out of the MVC are always candidates to turn some heads, too, led by No. 12 Chelmsford (14-6).

In Div. 2, part of what makes this tournament exciting is how the expansion from 60 teams to 81 in the last two years has impacted the playoff field. There will be 14 preliminary games, meaning qualified teams seeded as high as No. 19 Lynn Classical will need to add a game to their tournament path.

As for championship contention, No. 1 Westfield (18-3) and No. 2 Agawam (16-3) are well-positioned for consecutive meetings in the final – one the Brownies won last year in the sport’s first all-Western Mass. state title game. Both controlled most of their respective schedules, with each beating the No. 3 Wayland (12-8) team that figures to be the closest threat. The Bombers technically beat Agawam twice this year, but one came via forfeit well after the Brownies edged out a five-set thriller.

Bracket fillers should feel comfortable with slotting those three for spots in the Final Four, but from there it’s awfully close.

No. 4 North Middlesex (16-4) challenged itself with a tougher schedule and navigated it well to stand as the favorite for the fourth spot. A potential state quarterfinal matchup with No. 5 Longmeadow (15-4) is one to circle, though there is a minefield of upsets to monitor all over this tournament beforehand.

No. 13 Minnechaug (11-9) has several quality wins this year and could get in the way of North Middlesex in the second round. The same goes for No. 12 Marlboro (13-5) in a potential matchup with Longmeadow.

No. 6 Latin Academy (15-6) represented the Boston City League well this year and is hopeful for a deeper run, but No. 11 Greater Lowell (18-2) spells trouble should it get out of the first round.

No. 8 West Springfield (12-7) lost to Westfield twice in the regular season but familiarity could be on its side in pursuit of an upset. No. 15 Chelsea (14-4) and No. 18 Granby (18-2) are two young programs set for a quality battle before potentially facing Agawam. No. 7 Medfield (14-6) also could be in line for an intriguing matchup with No. 10 Keefe Tech (17-3) in the second round.

PREDICTIONS Div. 1 Champion: No. 2 Newton North Final Four: No. 1 Needham, No. 2 Newton North, No. 3 Natick, No. 4 Milford Sleeper: No. 11 Lexington Potential Upset: No. 21 St. John’s (S) over No. 12 Chelmsford Best First Round Matchup: No. 15 Acton-Boxboro vs. No. 18 St. John’s Prep

Div. 2 Champion: No. 1 Westfield Final Four: No. 1 Westfield, No. 2 Agawam, No. 3 Wayland, No. 5 Longmeadow Sleeper: No. 13 Minnechaug Potential Upset: No. 11 Greater Lowell over No. 6 Latin Academy Best First Round Matchup: No. 15 Chelsea vs. No. 18 Granby

From Wheaton to Loyola to the Paris Olympics, volleyball stars Thomas Jaeschke and Jeff Jendryk keep rising

Such heights they’ve reached. such shared glory. and their unlikely story only gets better..

Then-Loyola teammates Jeff Jendryk (left) and Thomas Jaeschke during a winning match against Penn State in 2015.

Then-Loyola teammates Jeff Jendryk (left) and Thomas Jaeschke during a winning match against Penn State in 2015.

Loyola Athletics

Once upon a time, Thomas Jaeschke and Jeff Jendryk were needles in the same haystack.

Both grew up in Wheaton, Jaeschke two years older. Both discovered volleyball in high school — Jaeschke at Wheaton Warrenville South and Jendryk at St. Francis — took to the sport exceptionally well and joined the same, Aurora-based club, called Sports Performance. And as it turned out, both went on to star in college at Loyola , where Jaeschke, now 30, and Jendryk, 28, got to know each other and, if you can believe it, actually won a Division I national championship together.

Such heights they reached. Such shared glory. What an unlikely story.

But that ain’t the half of it, people. Mais non!

Jaeschke and Jendryk — two dudes from Wheaton — both are on the 12-man U.S. Olympic squad, currently ranked third in the world, that soon will head to the Summer Games in Paris.

How about that?

For Jaeschke, a 6-6 outside hitter, it will be a third go-round at the Olympics. He won a bronze medal with the U.S. team in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and also competed in Tokyo in 2021, those Games delayed a year due to the pandemic.

But for Jendryk, a 6-10 middle blocker, it will be a long-awaited debut on the grandest stage in the sport. He was on the national team — which takes 14 players to all other international tournaments — leading up to Tokyo but, in a painful development, was left on the cutting-room floor as the roster was trimmed to 12.

“We had four great middle blockers, and we had no clue which one of us wasn’t going to make it,” Jendryk said. “When I found out it was me, I was so bummed. I’d put in all the hard work, four years grinding every day to get better at my craft. It took me a couple months to let it go, to be OK with it. All I could do now was really focus on making the next [team].”

Waiting to find out about Paris was no less stressful. Receiving the good news was an indescribable joy.

“I’m so pumped,” he said. “For me, it’s been eight years for this moment.”

Both players were all-time greats at Loyola, of course, reaching hard-to-imagine success even if it unfolded under the radar in a decidedly pro-sports-oriented city. The Ramblers actually won back-to-back national titles in 2014 — right at Gentile Arena in Rogers Park — and in 2015, this time at Stanford. Jaeschke starred on both teams and was the 2015 national player of the year. Jendryk watched from the stands in 2014, still in high school, before becoming Loyola’s only four-time All-American and, in 2018, its last first-team All-American.

Jendryk had crazy size and all the tools as a freshman, but Jaeschke was the man — and the man imparted an early lesson one day in practice that would go a long way. A teammate on the other side of the net blasted a ball that Jendryk figured had no chance to be dug out; Jaeschke got that dig, though, and the ball came right to Jendryk and hit him in the back.

“I didn’t turn around quick enough,” Jendryk said. “It was a little lazy. Tom ran up to me and grabbed my shirt: ‘You gotta be ready all the time, ready for this ball!’ To sum that up, I love the guy. He’s a really hard worker, but he expects a lot of his teammates and wants the best for his teammates.”

Jaeschke played travel baseball and basketball as a boy, and golf and basketball as a freshman in high school. That same school year, he decided against baseball in order to give volleyball a whirl.

“I was 5-10 when I started,” Jaeschke said, “but the next year, sophomore year, I was 6-5.”

With a 38-inch vertical, to boot. A kid like that can really throw down a slam dunk, but volleyball quickly became his real jam. Jaeschke has played professionally in Poland, Italy, China, Turkey and Japan, though not without significant injury disruptions, the worst a torn ACL. In all, it has been a delightful odyssey, with a third Olympics a true gift to be able to experience.

Thomas Jaeschke and Jeff Jendryk celebrate during a match on Oct. 6, 2023.

Thomas Jaeschke and Jeff Jendryk celebrate during a match on Oct. 6, 2023.

Volleyball World

“It’s a super-different kind of life,” he said. “When I’m done playing, I’ll be very appreciative of it. Sometimes it’s hard on a day-to-day level. But I speak Italian now. I never thought that would be the person I would grow up to be. As I’ve aged, every match now, wherever I am in the world, I take a second and look around and think, ‘Man, this is cool.’ ”

Jaeschke’s girlfriend, parents, sister and grandfather will all be in Paris. Jendryk’s girlfriend and his whole family will be there, too, including his older sisters, who played college volleyball at Illinois and Dayton.

Jendryk has played as a pro in Germany, Poland and Italy, but it was those sisters who made him try the sport when he was 16. He was a basketball player then, though, truth be told, not much of one.

“Freshman year, I was scoring two, four, six points in a game,” Jendryk said. “I was about 6-4, maybe 150. A better build for volleyball, you could say.”

He was still at Loyola when the basketball team made a Final Four run in 2018 that captivated the city. Some college sports have; others have not.

“I was really pumped up for those guys,” he said, “but I just wish that would happen more with volleyball. I wish there would be more news outlets promoting volleyball, getting to know the players. It’s kind of a bummer, right?”

Jendryk got mistaken for a basketball player often, the kind of thing that’s commonplace in volleyball.

“But I’m proud to be a volleyball player,” he said.

Never prouder than he’ll be in Paris, a long, long way from home.

‘Outside the box’: In a first, indoor Oahu mall to host volleyball championship

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Volleyball fans across the state will see a historic first this weekend: The Hawaii Club Volleyball Championship is set for this Saturday and it will be played not at an arena or gym but at Windward Mall.

The mall’s center court will soon temporarily become the state’s capital for Hawaii club volleyball and a premier championship tournament featuring hundreds of athletes on 32 teams.

“You could play it at the Stan Sheriff, you could play at the Blaisdell, but that’s something that’s been happening consistently,” said 7Gen Culture co-director Ed Chun.

“Why not think outside the box and put it in a unique setting that’s really gonna have these athletes experience something unique.”

It’s believed to be the first time ever a Hawaii indoor mall is hosting a tournament of this size and organizers have been planning it for over a year, securing a venue, meeting fire code requirements, and inputting safety protections such as retaining nets.

“It’s just gonna be rocking here,” said 7Gen Culture co-director Sivan Leoni.

“Just with the amount of people that are gonna come with the way everything is situated with the upper level, the lower level and just the pure engagement of the people.”

Lots of planning, but the actual setup takes place in just a matter of hours.

The court and nets can only be installed after the mall closes Friday night, hours before the start of matches Saturday morning.

However, the tournament host has experience in these matters, having planned matches at the Hawaii Convention Center.

“When we are able to focus on one court and one court only, we can really put something special in place because we’re not having to focus on over 50 courts per se,” Chun said.

It’s no secret how popular volleyball already is across the state and events like this can only help elevate Hawaii’s love for the sport to another level.

“In this next Olympics, men’s volleyball specific, we have four athletes competing on a national level in an Olympic level that’s gonna be representing Hawaii on a 12 man roster,” Chun said. “If that’s them creating something without this platform set, so now if we have such a platform of competition in place, how many more Olympic athletes will we have in the near future?”

Matches begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and admission is free.

Natick and Wayland are No. 3 seeds in MIAA boys volleyball state tournament

Three sets from glory, three sets from ruin. Try these boys volleyball and rugby brackets on for size. The MIAA continued its rollout of spring state tournament brackets Tuesday with five releases. The tennis brackets came out Saturday , while baseball, lacrosse and softball are slated for Wednesday.
