Trek Precaliber 24 Kids Bike Review

As kids grow older, they often grow more adventurous in their riding. If your kid loves to venture from paved trails with the family to tackling neighborhood dirt trails, the Trek Precaliber 24 may just be their perfect next bike.

Stylized like a mountain bike, the Trek Precaliber is designed for kids who are antsy for a bike with a cool “shock”, but who don’t actually need the expensive components found on a true mountain bike. And for those who want to save a little on weight and price, the Precaliber is also offered without the suspension fork for $30 less!

Results of our Test Rides

To facilitate this review, we purchased a 2021 Trek Precaliber 24 with suspension (2024 model is the same) from our local dealer and put it to the test on a wide variety of terrains. This review focuses mainly on the suspension model, but the suspension and non-suspension versions of the Precaliber share all the same components except for the fork, handlebar and hubs (more about these differences below).

Trek Precaliber 24 Rigid and Suspension Models

side by side image of the trek precaliber 8-speed and the trek precaliber with suspension

What type of rider is the Trek Precaliber 24 best for?

Trek precaliber with suspension.

The perfect combination of not too technical, yet not too basic, the Precaliber with suspension is an ideal bike for adventurous neighborhood riders who never plan to actually ride in the mountains.

Providing the cool off-road look of a true mountain bike that kids love, but without the expensive high-end components that parents don’t want to pay for, the Trek Precaliber 24 is a win-win! It’s hands-down the best “recreational mountain bike” we’ve ever tested.

To be clear, the design and quality of the Precaliber’s frame is trail-worthy, but its lower-end hand brakes don’t provide the stopping power necessary for true single track riding. Additionally, the “casual use only” labeled fork isn’t designed to handle the strain from mountain trails.

However, the suspension fork does a bit more than just look cool. It’s a huge win for kids because it helps them to easily pop-up their front tire when doing jumps and hops. It also adds a bit of appreciated cushioning on the landing.

Rigid Trek Precaliber (No Suspension)

For those looking to save on some weight, Trek also offers a non-suspension version of the Precaliber 24 that comes with a rigid fork. Weighing just under 2 pounds less than the suspension version, it may be a better option for lightweight riders who don’t plan on getting really aggressive on the bike.

With the same 2.25″ wide tires as the Precaliber with suspension, the non-suspension version is also capable of hitting basic dirt trails.

Performance and Use

From powering up jumps at the DIY neighborhood bike park, to cruising through snow and mud along paved bike trails, our testers were quickly at home on the Trek Precaliber 24.

boy catching air on a trek precaliber 24

While riding up hills, the grip shifter didn’t skip a beat, and the v-brakes had no problem bringing the bike to a stop. The 2.25″ wide knobby tires were the perfect match for snow and dirt but weren’t overly noisy or rough while on paved surfaces.

All in all, we were very impressed by the Precaliber’s performance and fit, and it easily ranks as our favorite recreational mountain bike (i.e. a bike with a suspension fork that’s not designed for real mountain biking).

What size child fits on this Trek 24 inch bike?

The Trek Precaliber 24 is a best fit for kids with inseams ranging from 24″ to 28″.

The Precaliber has a seat height range of 24″ to 30.5″, but its minimum seat height should be considered to be much closer to 26″. When the seat is placed in its lowest possible position, the handlebars are much too high for the rider and makes for a very uncomfortable and awkward fit.

a boy trying test out the trek precaliber 24. The bike is much to big for him.

As you can see in the image above, our 6-year old tester with a 22″ inseam can sit on the Precaliber with the seat height set to 24″, but the bike was much too big for him. Our taller 8-year-old tester below, with an inseam of 24″, was a great fit with the seat height set to 26.5″.

Boy riding the Precaliber 24 on a sidewalk.

On the higher end, our 9-year-old tester with a 26.5″ inseam still fit comfortably on the Precaliber with the seat set to 29″.

Lightweight Bikes Bolster Confidence

Lightweight bikes can be a tremendous help for young riders. Ideally, a 24 inch bike should weigh less than 30% of a child’s weight.

Less weight not only bolsters confidence in their riding abilities, but also helps kids grow or maintain their love for riding! Heavier bikes are more challenging to balance, and are a lot harder to maneuver.

Trek Precaliber 24 with Suspension

As one of the few larger bike manufacturers that actually post the weight of their kids’ bike online, Trek certainly deserves a lot of praise! Trek’s listed weight for the Precaliber 24 with suspension is 26.31 lbs., which is about what we got on our scale with 26.5 lbs.

Surprisingly, the suspension model only weighs about 1.6 lb. heavier than the non-suspension model. To help offset the weight of the suspension fork, the suspension Precaliber model features an upgraded alloy handlebar and hubs (versus steel on the non-suspension model).

boy popping a wheelie on the Trek Precaliber 24

Compared to recreational mountain bikes in its $400 price range, the Trek is truly a lightweight. The REI Co-op REV 24 Plus is built for a similar rider (but with plus-size tires instead of a suspension fork) and comes in at 28.2 pounds!

When compared to lower-end 24 inch bikes with a suspension fork, the Precaliber comes out winner again. The $299 BikesDirect Gravity 24″ comes in at 29.3 lb., while the $299 Schwinn Ranger 24″ comes in at 30 lb.

Although heavier than higher-end true mountain bikes (such as the $679+ 24 lb. Pello Reyes ), neither of our riders commented on the Precaliber’s weight and had no problems catching air around the neighborhood.

Rigid Precaliber 24

We did not have a chance to weigh the Trek Precaliber without suspension, but its listed weight is 24.73 lb. Compared to other non-suspension 24″ bikes, the Trek is similar in weight to other bikes for neighborhood riders under $400. At $449, the Priority Start 24 is a bit lighter at 23.3 lb., while the $339 Guardian 24 is slightly heavier at 25.5 lb.

While having less of a “mountain bike” style, the Priority Start 24 and Guardian Ethos are also great bikes for neighborhood riders. The Priority is unique as it contains an essentially maintenance-free internally-geared hub paired with a belt-drive, while the Guardian features a unique SureStop braking system that allows kids to easily and safely stop on a dime.

Suspension Fork for Casual Riding Only

Suspension forks on kids bikes can add up to 4 lb.+ of weight. That’s a lot – especially for a 7 or 8 year old rider. As a result, we typically only recommend bikes with suspension forks for kids who are aggressively riding true mountain bikes, and who need the extra cushioning well-made forks can provide.

But suspension forks look cool, kids want them, and Trek knows this! As a result, Trek made a clever and commendable move and put a featherweight “casual riding” suspension fork on the Precaliber 24.

boy jumping the curb on the Trek Precaliber with suspension

While the Zoom branded fork is not designed for true mountain biking (it clearly says so on the label), the fork does provide enough bounce to allow kids to tackle small jumps (not drops!) without adding a lot of weight to the bike.

So if your little one loves to jump curbs or even over cracks along the sidewalk, the extra $30 for the suspension fork is worth the investment.

sticker warning on the trek precaliber 24 stating that the fork is to be used for casual use

Drivetrain and Gearing

This Trek 24 inch bike comes with a Shimano Tourney 8-speed grip shifter and derailleur. According to Shimano , the Tourney series is “a basic component set for entry sports bikes and riders”.

As the lowest level of components in Shimano’s mountain line, the drivetrain certainly has room for improvements, and for really ambitious riders and parents, they could be swapped out.

For the average rider for whom the Precaliber is designed, our main complaint is with the Tourney’s bulky shifter. The large bump of the inside portion of the grip shift is too large in diameter for most kids to comfortably place their hand around it.

As a result, most kids adjust their grip to the side of the shifter, which still allows them to shift, but places their hand farther away from the brake lever. In order to brake, kids must then angle their fingers across the grip. While not a deal-breaker, it does make braking more challenging for small hands.

boys hand trying to reach the brake levers while using the Shimano Tourney Revoshift grip shifters. His fingers have to angle across the grip in order to reach the brake lever.

This same shifter, however, is very common on bikes in the Precaliber’s price range and can also be found on the Specialized Hotrock 24, the Cannondale Quick and the REI REV Plus.

Lower Gain Ratio than Higher-end Kids Bikes

The gain ratio of the Trek Precaliber 24 ranges from 1.9 to 4.9. From long paved trails to powering up dirt ramps, the Precaliber’s range presented no problems for our testers.

drivetrain of the Trek Precaliber

For those looking for a higher top gain ratio to bust out long distances on flat terrain, be aware that the Trek’s 4.9 max gain ratio is significantly lower than other brands with ranges that max out between 6 and 7.

The woom 5 , Prevelo Alpha Four and the Pello Reyes all have higher ranges, BUT they are also much more expensive and are designed for beginning trail riders versus casual neighborhood riders.

Brakes Are Basic and Non-branded

The v-brakes certainly aren’t high-end, but they provided plenty of stopping power throughout our test rides. The brake levers are child-sized and adjustable to minimize the reach for younger hands.

Compared to Tektro v-brakes, the Precaliber’s v-brakes require a little more effort to pull and don’t feel as solid. Because quick stopping is essential to true mountain biking where kids can quickly reach high speeds, brakes with more stopping power are ideal for aggressive trails.

Pedals Have Wide, Grippy Platform

The Precaliber comes standard with Bontrager’s satellite platform city pedals. Our testers enjoyed the grip and wider platform the pedal provided, but they certainly have a unique style to them. One of our kid testers thought they didn’t look enough like “mountain bike pedals.”

Swapping the pedals out, however, is quick and easy with any 9/16 thread pedal set.

Trek's satellite platform pedals on the Trek Precaliber

Color Options

The Precaliber (suspension and non-suspension) both come in Radioactive Red as well as Magenta. Although we wanted the Radioactive Red it was out-of-stock so we ended up with the Magenta which oddly enough looks pretty red!

Image of the Trek Precaliber set to its lowest seat height

As a comparison, here’s a side-by-side image of Trek’s Radioactive Red and Magenta. The Red is certainly lighter and brighter than the Magenta.

A Trek Precaliber radioactive red next to a Magneta colored bike

The suspension version of the Precaliber 24 is also available in white with pink and orange accents as well as a black with yellow and green accents.

Local Bike Shop Assembly and Support

Another major benefit of purchasing a Trek is professional assembly at your local bike shop. From brake levers to tire pressure and shifting, you can rest assured that your Trek comes ready to roll from day one. Most local bike shops also include a complimentary tune-up after several months.

When purchasing a Trek online you have the option to pick up the bike at your local bike shop already assembled. If you don’t have a local Trek dealer , some models are available to ship directly to you, but you would have to assemble the bike yourself.

Trek Precaliber 24 Bottom Line

Offering great quality and performance for the price, the Trek Precaliber 24 is an amazing bike for kids eager to tackle ambitious jumps and trails around the neighborhood, but not quite ready to hit real mountain bike trails.

Coming with or without suspension, the Precaliber also offers that look and feel of a real mountain bike, without having to pay for high-end components.

5 Best 24 Inch Bikes For Your Child (Boys & Girls)

Author: Kristen Bonkoski

Updated: November 5, 2023

Looking for a 24 inch bike for your son or daughter? Or grandchild?

You’re in the right place! We’ve tested and reviewed lots of kids bikes over the years, and in this article we’ll help save you time by providing a list of what we consider THE BEST 24 inch kids bikes, as well as giving you some tips on how to choose.

woom 5 in action

Table Of Contents

First, let’s make sure you’re looking at the right list.

In general, 24 inch bikes are appropriate for kids in the 7 to 11 age range, although this can vary depending on the size of the child and the geometry of the individual bike.  (More on picking the correct-size bike later).

If you’re not so sure that your kiddo needs a 24″ bike, start with our article on bike sizing first and go from there.

We should also mention that the bikes on this list are what we consider all-terrain, all-purpose bicycles. The bicycles on this list can nearly do it all. They are perfect for biking to school, playing in the cul-de-sac, and maybe even hitting a little dirt trail.

That said, if you’re family does more serious cycling, you might want a niche-specific 24″ bike instead. In that case try one of these articles instead:

  • Want a mountain bike? While the bikes on this list can certainly handle going to the skills park or hitting a little singletrack, if your child is serious about mountain biking you’ll want to look at our list of 24″ Mountain Bikes instead.
  • Want a road bike? Racing on the road or the cyclocross track? You’ll want a drop-bar 24 Inch Bike.
  • Riding in the snow or sand? Bigger tires are a big benefit when riding in the snow or sand. Check out our list of Kids Fat Bikes.

How to Choose a 24 Inch Bicycle

If you’re not sure what you should be looking for when shopping for a 24″ bike, here’s a quick primer.

Because 24 inch bikes are *almost* adult-sized and have gears, they also are also *almost* the same price as adult bikes.  Expect to spend at least $300 when buying new and closer to $500 or $600 if you want the best.

If that’s more than you can afford, consider buying a used bike rather than downgrading to a big-box store bike.  If that’s the route you choose to go, check out our tips on how to find a quality used kids bike .

The general rule of thumb for 24″ bikes is that they fit kids between 7 and 11 years old.  This can vary quite a bit though depending on the bike and the child.  Many manufacturers on this list market their bikes for kids ages 8 to 12, so make sure to look at the sizing chart for a specific bike before buying.

Measure your child’s height and inseam and compare it to the manufacturer’s specs. To learn more about measuring your child for a bike use this article:

Guardian 24 In Use

The weight of a bike can make a HUGE difference in how far and how fast a child can ride–and how much they enjoy it.  If you compare the bikes on our list to the weights of cheaper, big-box store bikes , you’ll notice the massive difference in weight.

We recommend buying the lightest bike you can afford.  We usually use budget as the #1 factor in choosing a bike, and weight as #2.

cleary meerkat review

There are three types of brakes you’ll notice on these bikes–v-brakes (rim brakes), mechanical disc brakes, and hydraulic disc brakes.

V-brakes are the most common and also the cheapest.  They work well enough under most conditions.

If you live in a city where it rains alot, there are steep hills, or your child may be using their bike for some off-road, trail riding, then you may want to consider a bike with disc brakes.

Amongst disc brakes, mechanical are the cheapest and also the easiest to maintain.  Hydraulic disc brakes offer the best modulation and stopping power but add cost and maintenance.

pello rover tektro disc brakes

Disc brakes (left) offer the best stopping power but are more expensive and require more maintenance than traditional rim / v-brakes (right).

Consider the type of riding your child is going to be doing.  If they will be riding 100% of the time on pavement, you want to look for a bike with slick, fast-rolling tires.  If they’re going to be spending time riding dirt, gravel, grass, mud, etc, you want to make sure the tire is a little wider and has some extra tread.

Even if the bike you are considering doesn’t have the best tires for your child’s preferred type of riding, you can always swap out tires later .

Suspension Vs Rigid Fork

We know that kids love suspension forks–they look cool! Sadly, most kids bikes with suspension forks are HEAVY and don’t work that well.

Most kids will be much better off on a lighter bike with a rigid fork. If your child is doing REAL mountain biking on technical trails or going to the bike skills park a bunch, then check out our list of mountain bikes instead.

A real mountain bike with an air fork will work well BUT expect to spend significantly more money.

Boys 24 Inch Bikes Vs Girls 24 Inch Bikes

There is no difference between a boys 24 inch bike and a girls 24 inch bike. Unlike adult bikes, where there may be true gender differences (like a sloped top-tube, women’s specific saddle, etc), kids bikes are kids bikes are kids bikes.

If you are just looking for a “feminine bike” for your kiddo, check out our article on the Best Bikes For Girls which has lots of ideas on how to make a bike more girly and what bikes come in feminine designs and colors.

Otherwise, feel free to buy any bike for your child, regardless of a gender description in the name.

5 Best Kids 24 Inch Bikes

If you’re looking for a lightweight, high-quality bike for your child, you want one of the bikes on our top 5 list.

woom 5 24" kids bike

Woom makes our favorite bikes for little kids, and they also make our favorite bikes for big kids.  The Woom 5 is exceptionally light and fast which makes it nice for long rides around town or even bike camping and touring (thanks to the optional fenders).

It boasts high-quality parts such as SRAM 8-speed grip shifters, fast-rolling Schwalbe tires, and Jagwire cables.

And in spite of all this fabulous stuff, it still manages to be cheaper than our other “Top 5” picks.

Prevelo Alpha Four

prevelo alpha four

There aren’t many kids bikes built with the same quality you would expect in an adult bike–but the Prevelo Alpha Four is one of them.

All of the components are top-notch including Tektro v-brakes, sealed cartridge bearings, and a Shimano drivetrain.   Thanks to this high-quality build the Alpha Four can be handed down (or sold) without a problem.

Price: $599

frog 62 kids bike

The Frog 62 is a flashy-looking, lightweight 24″ bike from the UK.  Of all the bikes we’ve tested over the years, the Frog bikes probably get the most attention from passerby thanks to the bright paint job and small attention to details–colored spokes near the valve, small frog decals on the frame and saddle, etc.

The bike doesn’t just look good though. It also has high-quality, adult-level components. In addition to the 8-speed Shimano drivetrain, the bike has custom-cranks, Tektro v-brakes, and fenders.

Price: $640

Cleary Meerkat 24

trek wahoo 24 vs precaliber

The Cleary Meerkat is a BEAUTIFUL 24″ kids bike that performs as well as it looks.  The bike comes in a variety of bright colors and has a durable steel fork and frame.

The hydraulic disc brakes add lots of stopping power which makes them ideal for wet climates and cities with lots of hills.   The other thing that makes this bike stand apart is the 5-speed Sturmey Archer internally geared hub. This means that there is no rear derraileur to get bent or dirty.

Thanks to the beefy Kenda tires the bike is also ideal for riding gravel roads and other off-pavement trails.

Read Our Review: Cleary Meerkat

Price: $695

Pello Reyes

pello reyes 24 inch kids bike

Like the Cleary Mearkat, the Pello Reyes is also a great do-it-all bike. Thanks to the more aggressive tires, the bike can be used as a school commuter as well as on the local pump track.

The Tektro mechanical disc brakes offer better stopping power than the rim brakes found on most kids bikes, which make them ideal for families living in wet climates or in hilly areas. We also LOVE the fact that the bike comes with tubeless-ready wheels. Tubeless tires rarely go flat and require so much less maintenance than tubes.

Should you want to add a suspension fork, that’s an option as well.

Read Our Review : Pello Rover (same bike just smaller)

Price: $679

Early Rider Belter 24

early rider belter 24 inch kids bike

If you can stomach the price tag, the Early Rider Belter 24 is a phenomenal little bike. The brushed aluminum frame is gorgeous, and the components are top notch.

What really sets the bike apart is the belt drive (rather than a chain) and internally geared 8-speed hub. Both help keep things clean and maintenance free.

The belt drive (and hydraulic disc brakes) perform really well in wet weather, so if you live in a rainy area, this bike is worth a look.

5 Best “Budget” Kids 24 Inch Bikes

While these bikes may not offer the same bells and whistles as those on our Top 5 list, if you are looking for a good durable bike at an affordable price, these bikes will fit the bill.

vitus 24 inch kids bicycle

In terms of value, the Vitus 24 really can’t be beat. It’s intelligently designed with child-appropriate geometry and brand name componenets–Tektro brakes, Vee Rubber tires, and a Shimano drivetrain.

If you want high-quality bike at a more affordable price that some of the bikes listed above, this is the bike you want.

Good News: Vitus now has a US website!

Price: $399

Trek Precaliber 24

trek wahoo 24 vs precaliber

With the Trek Precaliber 24 , you get an affordable bike with a brand name and the opportunity to support your local dealer.

The bike is heavier than those in our Top 5 list, but it comes with decent components that will last thru a kid or two.  The bike has 7-speed Shimano grip shifters and Bontrager tires.

Price:  $399

Guardian Ethos 24

guardian ethos kids 24 inch bike

The Guardian Ethos 24 is a budget-friendly bike with the great proprietary SureStop braking system.

The SureStop braking system uses a single brake lever to apply appropriate force to both the front and rear wheels. This helps prevent over-the-bars crashes, and makes it a great choice for safety-concious parents and/or kids who struggle with eye-hand-coordination.

Co-Op Cycles REV CTY

trek wahoo 24 vs precaliber

If you have a 20% off coupon and an REI dividend burning a hole in your pocket, the Co-Op Cycles REV CTY is worth some serious consideration.  We like the Shimano drivetrain and the fast-rolling Kenda tires.

What we don’t dig is the considerable weight–the REV CTY tips the scales at a hefty 26 pounds.

Raleigh Redux 24

trek wahoo 24 vs precaliber

The Raleigh Redux 24 offers a killer value. We don’t know of any other bikes at this pricepoint that offer mechanical disc brakes and brand-name components.

The mechanical disc brakes are great for families that ride in wet or dusty climates, though they can cause hand fatigue for some young riders. Other components include Kenda tires and a Shimano 7-speed drivetrain.

Price: $325.30 (Last updated: 2024-05-01 at 16:19 – More Info )

Polygon Premier 24

polygon premier 24 kids bike

The Polygon Premier 24 is a fairly new entrant to the kids bike market, and it’s competing (quite impressively) on price. Even at a budget, it has managed to offer high quality, brand name components like the Shimano Tourney Revoshift drivetrain and Kenda tires.

It is also (relatively) lightweight at 23 lbs. If you’re on a tight budget, you could do far worse than this bike.

Price: $289

Honorable Mentions: 24 Inch Bikes

While we highly recommend the bikes on our Top 5 list, the following bicycles are worth a look as well.

Specialized Jett 24

specialized jett 20

Specialized has stepped up their game with the introduction of the Specialized Jett 24. This bike competes with the best of the best on weight.

The bike is designed to maximize the amount of time your child can use the bike. There are two different crank holes (very unique) as well as a sizing tool to help you set the correct seapost and handlebar height.

Price: $550

Ridgeback Dimensions 24

ridgeback 24

The Ridgeback Dimensions 24 is a shiny, around-town bike that will look good locked up at school.  Ridgeback is another UK company that knows how to make nice kids bikes.  The aluminum frame included eyelets to install fenders and a rear-rack should you choose to do so.

Price: $499

Priority Start 24

priority start 24

The Priority Start 24 is unique in that it uses a belt-drive rather than a chain. We love this! The belt drive is grime-free, won’t stain your kids pant legs, and requires minimal maintenance.

Speaking of minimal maintenance, the bike also has an internally-geared hub. It has three different gears that shift automatically. This is great for kids who don’t have the dexterity yet to shift, and for parents who don’t want to deal with maintaining the drivetrain.

Islabikes Beinn 24

islabikes beinn 24

As of fall 2018, Islabikes is no longer offering their bikes in the North American market. (Sad!) This was previously listed as one of our Top 5 bikes, and we are leaving it as an honorable mention in case you are lucky enough to find one used.

Islabikes is THE original kid-specific bike company and maintains its excellent reputation and cult-like following.  Serious bike families LOVE Islabikes thanks to the child-appropriate geometry, lightweight, and resale value.  Thanks to accessories like fenders and a luggage rack, the bike is ideal for around-town commuting or longer tours.  The only bummer is the price–which is significant when compared to other 24-inch bikes.

Cannondale Quick 24

trek wahoo 24 vs precaliber

The Cannondale Quick 24 is capable of tackling paved city streets, gravel rail trails, and grass fields thanks to it’s all-around knobby tires.

All the components are brand-name including Kenda tires, Tektro brakes, and a Shimano Tourney drivetrain. It also weighs in at a totally respecatable 20 lbs, making this a great bike for any child.

So, I ordered her a Vitus when they were having a Black Friday sale. Noticed it still hadn’t shipped … and now they said it’s out of stock and they’re cancelling my order, two weeks before Xmas (and after most shops and REI have had their sales). UGH

Our budget isn’t huge. $400 range. My daughter is 9 and she’s never been a super confident rider – meaning she’s fine around the neighborhood but tends to panic on easy trails when she gets into trouble, and she’s not the type of kid to want to do jumps etc. We do live in CO and near trails, and usually take a spring trip to Moab. Her little brother is only 4 so most of our riding isn’t too technical and she’s just too timid for that anyways.

Bike options: LBS has Cannondale Quick and Trails both on sale for $320 (I think the Trail at that price is last year’s colors). Trail has suspension but it adds 5 lbs, so I really don’t know that it’s worth it. She’s a rail and only weighs 62 lbs as is. I wish the tires on the Quick were a bit wider. Should I get the lighter Quick and get wider tires? Will the rims hold them (I don’t know how to read the rim specs).

Raleigh Rowdy/Lilly also readily available for around $320-330. Knobby tires, low weight. I did read that it has a more aggressive stance that might feel intimidating for a more timid rider . . . which my daughter is.

We have an REI nearby, though their REV bikes seem heavy in comparison.

I’ve read a lot of good things about Guardian bikes, though with their one handed brake system I realize it’s not a good mtbr . . . but maybe for her type of riding it doesn’t matter?

Other suggestions? (aside from spending a lot more, we can’t right now so please don’t launch into the whole “wait and save and spend $$$” because she might even outgrow this 24″ in another year and THEN we will invest more). I would like to buy something today to make sure it ships in time and there’s time for any extra assembly. (Bikes with limited assembly a plus, we’re not super bike handy beyond a tire change)

Hi Sarah, I might be too late, but jumping into say you are totally on the right track. I’d stick with lightweight over suspension. The Cannondale Quick is a great choice for the type of riding you are describing, and you should easily be able to add some fatter tires should you decide she needs them. There isn’t enough info on their website too know exactly how wide of a tire you can add, but I would expect you to be able to add a 1.8 or 2.0 tire. The LBS should be able to tell you for sure.

Judging by her riding style, the Guardian could also be a great choice. My only concern with it is if you think she’s going to progress with her trail riding, the brakes might eventually hold her back.

Hope that helps a little. -KB

I put a 2″ MTB tire on my daughter’s Quick 20. Plenty of room. I’d expect the 24″ has similar clearance.

Good to know; thanks for sharing Quentin!

Small note, the 2020 Ridgeback Dimension 24 is 20.9 lbs (9.5kg) not 26.1.

How is the durability of these bikes for kids can it lasts for 4-5 years or not.

I saw the “budget’ options start at $330 and instantly thought (West coast or North East 1%ers).

These bikes are not only identical (different aesthetics) to the boxstore bikes that cost 1/3rd the price… they’re using the same images as they got from their Aliexpress source. The weight is the same, the components all appear to be the same. No difference.

Regarding durability, most Aliexpress and boxstore bikes are made in the same exact factories with the same exact tooling to the same exact specifications as the sub$1k non-USA made bikes.

My thoughts exactly. No “Oshkosh B’Gosh” here, either. I love my son and want quality stuff for him but when it comes to bicycles at his young age the “Wally World” stuff fits the bill. Literally. I don’t expect he’ll be snapping forks or be concerned about weight.

It’ll be a different story when (and IF) he takes the hobby seriously. THEN the higher-priced, quality bikes will warrant consideration.

This is not true. a $199 Schwinn Sidewinders at Walmart cost 199 on 24″ wheels. Weight is 30 pounds and the groupset is absolute garbage! I know because I used to have the adult version of it. Look, I get that $150 is a lot of money for most. But that doesn’t mean the bikes listed here are not better. And for the most part they are. If you can find the exact same bike, with the same specs on Aliexpress for much less, then i suggest you start your own business and sell bikes on your own for a nice profit.

What a load of BS. Even if they’re made in the same factories, who says its to the same specifications? Objectively, a Woom is a better bike than your box store bike, simply based on its weight. Then we haven’t even looked in to the build quality and the components. For kids (and adults) serious about cycling, lower weight is a serious advantage. If you don’t care and just want to have a fun ride – which is definitely possible with a $200 bike – then don’t spend the money.

Any comments on the BMC Blast 24? Weight and components seem pretty good for the price

When you list minimum seatpost height, where are you measuring from? Thanks.

How are you measuring the minimum seatpost height? I tried measuring my daughter’s seat on her 20″ bike and got about 18″ to the center of the bottom bracket and about 27″ to the ground. Based on the numbers you have I assume you measured to the ground, but I would appreciate confirmation.

p.s., sorry if this is a repeat. I tried posting earlier and it looked like it went through but later it disappeared.

Yup, to the ground! Minimum seatpost height is the distance from the ground to the saddle.

Posting the Vitus 24 at a “budget” price of $379 is a little misleading for anyone here in the US. This bike is only available through Chain Reaction and is shipped from the UK. Shipping (in Jan 2022) is $139 so the true price is $518. Bikes are not included in Chain Reactions free shipping when spending over $99 and also not included in their often seen 10, 15% discount sales.

Hi Simon, This is true! Unfortunately, the shipping cost has recently gone way up. We have a significant number of UK readers here, so it still makes sense for them, but I do need to make a note for our US readers.

I appreciate the detailed assessment of the various bikes you have offered and the points you make about bike fit for kids. After reviewing your info, I eventually purchased a Quick 24 (Sherpa) for my 8 year old daughter. She started on a 16″ Trek Precaliber and loved the light, nimble design. I moved her to a CrMo 20″ Hardrock 6spd and suspension fork – she never seemed comfortable on it. After watching the REI site and seeing the Quick 24 on sale, I lucked into one at the local store. It was a return and handlebars were damaged in shipping. They upgraded the stem, installed new bars, and cut them to size for her. When we got home, I saw the same excitement, energy, and smile on her face that I saw on the Precaliber. For her, weight makes more of a difference than I imagined – Quick 24 is definitely light and fits the bill. With the current 20% discount on REI the site i think the bike is a great value. The components are solid, the fit/finish are very nice, and she noticed the saddle being comfortable. Happy dad moment for sure!

Also – the Cannondale brand is now owned by Pon Holdings in Holland and the Dutch do like their bikes. I see this purchase as a win/win for the American consumer.

2021 Trek Precaliber 24 Review From Real Owners

trek wahoo 24 vs precaliber

In this review, we break down our experience with our kids owning and riding the 2021 Trek Precaliber in this Trek Precaliber review. We own what we share with you, that matters.

Trek Precaliber 24 Review

What can you expect from this Trek Precaliber 24 review? Well, you can expect that despite all the “reviews” out there regurgitating specs, stats, and numbers, we are breaking down what matters: Real kids and their real experiences on the Trek Pre-Caliber 24 mountain bike.

Both CJ and Mike of Off-Grid Essential have kids with Trek Pre-caliber 24’s . In fact, between the parents and kids, we all ride Trek (Roscoe 7, Marlin 5, and Pre-Caliber 24’s). It’s safe to say we like Trek.

Because of this, we decided to share our thoughts in a combined article from both of us with our kid’s experience rocking the Trek Pre-Caliber 24.

Shopping for mountain bikes is exhausting, there are so many options and let’s be honest, they are expensive ! So when you fork over your hard-earned money, you expect quality and value to meet you in the middle with price, topped off with a big smile on your kid’s face. Psst! Brining your doggo camping with you? You need to check out our Camping With A Doggo Checklist , you wont regret it! It’s the little things folks.

Kids nowadays are so wrapped up in video games and television that a little fresh air from time to time is needed.  One fun way to do get them outside is ensuring they have a good bike they can take out on the trails and around the neighborhood…insert the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed Hardtail bike!

Mike’s Experience With The 2021 Trek Precaliber 24:

My kids are fun, I’m sure yours are too. But, you know what’s really fun with these kids? Seeing their eyes get big and smiling/laughing as they take tier mountain bikes down the green/blue lines of the North Frutia Desert in Colorado and the trails of Moab, UT.

Not sure what those “green/blue” lines mean? Checkout our guide on the Mountain Bike Trail Rating System . Previous to 2020, my kids had only owned cheap bikes from Target or other big box stores. While there is nothing inherently wrong with these bikes, they are a bit limited in both features and components when it comes to true mountain biking.

Now, don’t get me wrong, my kid’s aren’t jumping their bikes or hitting black lines in Moab, but they are getting to an age where they push their bikes further than the Target/Walmart bikes were built to do.

Mountain bike trails are fast and fun. With that speed comes the need for good braking, cornering, and shock absorption. When you go from a Walmart bike to a Trek, you see an immediate improved difference.

This improvement in braking, cornering, and shock absorption bring a much higher level of safety as well. I can’t really argue that. I mean, who wants their kid flying downhill and not having good tires and brakes? Not me, amigos (I said that in my head with a 1970’s Mexican Bandito movie accent).

At first, when I shelled out $800 for two bikes (kids aged 8/9), I was skeptical. Both of my kids seemed proficient on their bikes and I didn’t really see the need for the upgrade. All of that changed when we went riding in Colorado/Utah. I instantly noticed a confidence improvement from the kids. I think the improved control and braking allowed them to get a little more creative on the trails, and it showed.

The unfortunate part? These bikes don’t physically grow along with kids. This means that although I’ll be able to get by over the next two years with seat post and handlebar adjustments, in a few years they will be upgrading bikes. But, hey, your a parent too and you know this already because you have likely had to buy shoes and clothes over and over every few months, not because they “wanted” new stuff, but because they needed it.

And you know what they will be getting? Treks. All this love and fun with the bikes the kids had, promoted us to share this Trek Precaliber 24 review.

CJ’s Experience With The 2021 Trek Precaliber 24:

By now you know that we are a Trek family.  And why not?… Trek is a reputable brand that makes quality bikes. We purchased this bike for my son who is 7. So you can understand his evolution, he went straight from a Stryder bike to a Trek Precaliber 20. The Precaliber 20 was the perfect first bike that lasted him for four years.

We knew he needed a larger bike, but I had my heart set on finding him something that had a suspension fork because we were going to spend a good portion riding on trails here in Colorado.  Luckily for me, his Trek Precaliber 20 sold very fast and I cannot tell you how worth of investment that bike was.  Due to the success, we had with his previous bike, it was a no-brainer that the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed Suspension would be his next.

Of course, COVID dried up the market but we lucked out and found a dealer in Denver that had three in stock.  This bike comes in two colors: Radioactive Red, and Trek Black.  They actually had both colors so we allowed him to choose which color he wanted and while Radioactive Red sounds cool, he ultimately went with Trek Black because he wanted to match mom and dad’s bikes. This bike retails for $379.99.

What you will get with this bike.  To start, a strong lightweight aluminum frame, an easy to use 8-speed Shimano drivetrain, a front suspension fork with 45 mm of travel, a kickstand, rear rack mounts, and a smooth saddle.  This is a true kid rugged, adventure bike.  Pavement, dirt…does not matter, this bike performs on all and my son cannot stay off it.

I was initially concerned about the gears and his ability to shift, but a few times worth of practice in the neighborhood and he has it down.  The twist shifter is genius!  He now understands which gear he should be in to climb and descend.

He loves this bike so much that he is always asking to take to the trails…we actually just got home from riding a portion of the Sante Fe Trail here in Colorado Springs.  He found some hills that he could have some fun on.

The experience with this Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed Suspension bike is truly amazing.  He wants to be out riding, which means less time on Fortnite and Youtube!  His confidence level with riding is through the roof thanks to Trek’s frame design.  The lower top tube allows kids’ to stand over and hop on and off the bike with ease.

It is a true rugged bike, that will last him another 3-4 years, and because this bike is built to last when it is time we will have no problem selling it.  We did not know how he would respond to trail riding, but this bike has him begging for more time spent on the dirt.

Oh, and the kids in the neighborhood have taken a liking to his bike.  Every time my garage door opens there is a girl across the street asking to ride his bike…hopefully, her parents will buy her one soon ☺.

Final Thoughts?

To summarize this Trek Precaliber 24 review, this bike is an excellent, smile-inducing, 8-speed, hardtail mountain bike. The Trek Precaliber is equipped with the Alpha lightweight aluminum frame that is both durable and rustproof, hand brakes, simplistic shifting, and a suspension fork…what is there not to love about this bike? TREK Wahoo 24 Review

Wahoo 24: Your child can easily enjoy every ride with the Wahoo 24, a lightweight, straightforward, and practical kids’ hybrid bike. With a 1×8 drivetrain and a variety of gearing for wherever your child roams, this bike’s adaptability is designed for ease of use. It is light, capable on a variety of surfaces, and equipped with a wide range of gearing. 8 to 12 year olds, 51 to 59 inches tall.

Specification

pros & cons, check specifications here.

You want your child to have a capable bike that is simple to use, simple to handle, and versatile since you know that riding is all about having fun. Wahoo 24 provides one fantastic ride after another, whether you’re travelling with your family or heading to school in the morning.

Kids can concentrate on what really matters: having fun, thanks to the 1×8 drivetrain, multi-surface tyres, and a lightweight Alpha Aluminum frame that is simple for them to pick up and operate.

Alpha Almunum Frame

With the same quickness and affordability that have historically made aluminium such a popular material, the Alpha Aluminum frame was created to offer more versatile frames. Using an all-encompassing strategy for frame design and production, Trek is able to fine-tune frames to be stiff where essential and supple where it is practical. You will therefore have more chances to enjoy your aluminium frame on the journey.

If you have Alpha Aluminum, you won’t have to second-guess going on a multi-day tour or hitting the gravel. Aluminum bikes are the only ones you’ll ever need for leisure, travel, exercise, and competition.

Linear Pull Brakes

A common type of brake is the linear pull. Despite being more simpler to adjust than conventional cantilever brakes, they are nonetheless cable-actuated. In comparison to cantilever brakes, pads are also more simpler to replace. Good all-around; simple to instal and maintain; simple to find replacement pads for. On a frame component known as a “braze-on,” each arm pivots. The pivots are situated below the rim, just like cantilevers. At a linkage and “noodle,” the cable housing fastens to one arm. A pinch bolt on the other arm is reached via the bare cable.

1x Drive train

Less complicated and simpler to use: Since only the right hand gear shifter is required to change ratios, riders may enjoy their ride without worrying about how complicated their gears are. A 1X drivetrain is without a doubt the simplest to use for a novice. You shift up a gear to move forwards more quickly and down a gear to slow down.

Color Choices

Trek Wahoo 24 is available in three colors—(i) Lithium Grey/Radioactive Red, (ii) Viper Red/Trek Black (iii) Waterloo Blue/Quicksilver—and in single size (24 inches). It weighs roughly 9.58 kg / 21.11 lbs.

Oh! What a feeling

Wahoo’s aluminium frame is robust and durable while being lightweight, making it simple for children to control.

Closed dropouts with Trek’s ThruSkew, a security feature that makes sure the wheels never accidentally come off.

A straightforward 1×8 drivetrain makes shifting easier so kids can concentrate on having fun.

Purchasing a kids’ bike from a reputable manufacturer is worthwhile because Trek kids’ bikes are made by experts in the field.

Introduction

Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed

As a classic kid’s bike, the Trek Precaliber 24 8-Speed is truly child-friendly. My son, who is also the rider of this child, spoke highly of and appreciated it.

The unique design style, superior premium performance, and amazing longevity make it especially stand out in comparison to the same model. In addition, the simplicity and intuitive twist shift of the 8-speed drivetrain are perfect for children aged 8-12 to master quickly. It ensures a safe ride while maintaining a relatively stable speed.

Even for novices who have no previous riding experience, it still has a strong appeal and safety guarantee. It is equipped with its own aluminum frame structure that can withstand the roughest of novices. And on top of that has the excellent feature of easy maintenance.

To make the results more informative for you, below we elaborate on the performance, key features, components, and specifications of the Trek Precaliber 24 while riding, as well as other versions of the series. If you want to learn more about the Trek Precalibe version, please refer to our review.

Park Riding

First of all, I would like to say that I am especially grateful to my son peter for conveying the feeling of using the device to me in many experiments. It is also because of him that I really got the real riding feeling from the base of the accessory unit. Compared to other children’s bikes of the same type, the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed uses an alpha aluminum frame, and some people may not be fond of such a material as the bike’s own frame. But it has to be admitted that aluminum is a popular material used to make bicycle frames. Because it is light, strong, and affordable.

Not only that, but it also provides good stiffness, which can effectively deal with the bike while riding problems. However, it does not absorb road vibrations, as well as carbon, does. In real-life riding, peter was able to steadily drive the bike and move forward in an organized manner.

The park has three kilometers of smooth trails, which may be a good choice for children to practice cycling. There is no need for complicated gear shifting, you can choose the right speed to travel smoothly. You just need to carry out the finger toggle, you can smoothly shift the operation, peter very much likes this operation.

The Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed brakes are a lot of fun, and Peter can brake just by pushing back on the pedals. He found the brakes to be very stable and did not let his lack of strength prevent him from braking in time.

Competition Riding

If your child likes to take on challenges on a variety of trails or compete with other kids, then the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed really does have quality riding to offer. Whether it’s a flat park trail or a relatively rough and bumpy road, it still performs well.

Like other Precaliber bikes, the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed is designed to fit the size of a small child. The relatively low frame makes it easy for kids to get on the bike and stay on their feet. I rarely worry about Peter falling over on the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed because it is really strong enough to hold my son’s entire weight.

The body doesn’t wobble even when the legs are leaning on the top shelf to tie the laces. In fact, my kids actually did this. Not only that, but I replaced the saddle’s integrated handle with an integrated light mount to handle nighttime travel. What are the benefits of doing this? It improves the brightness of night travel and provides brighter visibility. Even if there will be an emergency, the subtle handbrake it comes with fits a child’s riding setup.

The Shimano 1×8’s drivetrain is capable of bursting with drive, and the uncomplicated tuning structure is quick to grasp and addictive to small children. Peter will mischievously spin his hand shaft to get a new and exciting feeling again and again. “It’s a lot of fun, and I enjoy the stable feeling of it!” This is the most intuitive comment from peter about the Trek Precaliber 24.

Needless to say, the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed performs satisfactorily in all aspects.

Main Features

Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed

Alpha aluminum bracket is a popular material used to build bike frames because of its lightweight. In my kid’s case, he was able to lift the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed with both hands. It was a bit of a struggle, but he managed to lift it. Not only that it offers good stiffness, but it has the advantage of being strong and easy to maintain at an affordable price.

At the beginning of the ride, peter may use more force to pedal to get faster speed. So I would worry that too much impulse would cause damage to the body. From the result, it seems that my worry may be unnecessary.

In addition, he may not be very happy with the red color scheme. If Trek can produce other colors, I believe I will pay for them.

Of course, safety remains the first guarantee as opposed to a child’s car. While ordering online, I then ordered the auxiliary tire so that he can protect my son’s safety. It turns out that my decision was right, and with its help, he learns the bike to come quickly.

Of course, you can also install other devices such as fenders, adaptive lights, and small water bottles to deal with complex roads and complex weather according to the needs of your child.

 Geometry

The 70° head tube angle is just right for children aged 8-12 years old, and the right head tube angle can make them maintain a more comfortable sitting position during the ride. At the same time, the more relaxed angle can make children can keep a relatively sensitive steering force on the way.

Not only that, the 98.4cm wheelbase is on the long side compared to other bikes of the same type.

All other things being equal, longer bikes are more stable in terms of speed.

It is important to understand that the longer the wheelbase, the less a child’s weight distribution is affected by braking, changes in gradient, or rough terrain. In this sense, a longer wheelbase increases stability. The Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed’s relatively long wheelbase better protects Peter. I think this is a great setup.

Components and Specifications

Bontrager xr1 tires.

Bontrager XR1 Tires

I have to admit that the Bontrager XR1 tire has a very child-friendly riding profile. It is able to maintain a relatively stable body under sharp rollers. It’s not just for flat commuter roads. Even on relatively bumpy gravel roads, it still provides a very stable speed.

The Bontrager XR1 tire has an exceptionally strong casing. This also ensures that it can handle different surfaces without damaging itself. Also, thanks to the wire bead (27tpi, 24×2.25”), it is able to drive smoothly and powerfully, even under rainy and smooth surfaces, thanks to its relatively firm grip.

And it has a high-strength casing made of lightweight nylon inserts. Therefore, it can provide strong and soft sidewall protection, thus increasing the durability of the tire.

Not only in terms of money and time, but the excellent wear resistance also allows me to spend much less on tires. The last bike I had was a bike that I often struggled with because of the unstable tires.

Steel Front Fork

Steel Front Fork

I have to admit that the fork made of steel may not be as light compared to the carbon fork. But considering that this is a bike for kids, the relatively low price makes me accept the setup.

During the time when the child was just learning to ride, I would be worried about whether the material would have a greater impact on his own riding. But surprisingly, my son was very satisfied with the ride. The steel fork can fully satisfy the kid’s daily needs because there are not too bumpy roads for commuting on the bike.

At the same time, because the steel fork is inexpensive and well maintained, in daily riding, as long as you are not ho cross to fall off a cliff. Then the effect it presents is also able to be quite satisfying.

 Shimano Tourney1x8 Drivetrain

Shimano Tourney is still the best choice on the market. After all, it allows for better power transfer and still maintains plenty of power even on forestry trails in the mountains. In addition, the 8-speed drivetrain is simple and easy to operate, and I don’t intend to introduce too many flywheel teeth.

The reason is mainly that I don’t think children need to have too much shift speed, 8 speed should be able to travel this far to the back of the park. The second is the price, too much flywheel will also bring a too high a price. This is also a factor you must consider.

Not only that, the intuitive shift function can be changed to different speeds by finger adjustment. So for children is also very simple and easy to use.

Alloy L inear- P ull B rake

One of the most notable and important aspects of riding for children is emergency braking in case of danger. The Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed continues to perform very well in this regard.

First, it has integrated handlebars under the saddle, what does this do? It allows children to learn how to ride a bike with the help of adults. When my child first practiced bicycling, I kept my hand on the handlebars to prevent it from falling off the bike. This proved to be a very thoughtful design.

Secondly, the use of helper tires increases the balance of the bike. So it can keep the bike in a stable state by supporting the force on both sides. And due to the shorter body, the emergency brake can be applied through the contact between the bottom of the foot and the ground. The alloy brakes we mentioned also take into account the children’s prep for braking, and they can easily stop the bike with their own fingers.

Other versions Of Trek Precaliber

Other versions Of Trek Precaliber

We also tested another version of the Trek Precaliber, the Trek Precaliber 20 7-speed, which is also a kid’s bike and is extremely similar in terms of frame, tires, and brake type. However, the Trek Precaliber 20 7-speed is lighter in weight than the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed, making it more suitable for younger children.

The difference is that the Precaliber 24 8-speed has 24″ tires and a 1×8 drivetrain that offers a wider range of gears. The Precaliber 20 7-speed has 20″ tires. Of course, it has a cheaper price compared to the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed. If price is not a factor you have to consider, then the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed will be more suitable for you.

Comparison Table

Trek precaliber 24 8-speed vs liv enchant 24 lite.

Liv Enchant 24 Lite

Featuring an average youth bike with a 24-inch aluminum frame with modest components and rim brakes, the Liv Enchant 24 Lite still scores well in comparable comparisons. The comfortable, lightweight ALUXX grade aluminum frame is designed to maintain a more stable body. The off-road tires are also equipped for steady progress on both muddy country roads and pedestrian streets.

In most respects, it is very similar to the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed. But in terms of gear shifting, the Liv Enchant 24 Lite has a 1×7 flywheel tooth count, which may be less useful in the pursuit of speed variation. Maybe you can consider whether to buy it according to the actual situation.

Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed vs Trek Wahoo 24

Trek Wahoo 24

The Trek Wahoo 24, also constructed of aluminum, is lighter and easier to operate. Whether you’re preparing for a family ride or a child’s daily commute to school, it will give you a great performance time and time again. It’s also fun to ride as a versatile kid’s bike.

As with the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed, it still has the 1×8 operating configuration chosen for its power drivetrain system. This allows it to adapt to different roads and meet the choice of children for gear speed.

At the same time, we should also note that the lighter appearance will have a more expensive price. Compared to the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed, it has a price tag of nearly $500. This may not be good news for the price party.

Precaliber 24 8-speed vs Cannondale Kids Quick 24 Boy’s

 Cannondale Kids Quick 24 Boy's

Under the same aluminum shell, Cannondale Kids Quick 24 Boy’s has a more advanced configuration. This makes it a popular choice for comparisons in the same category of the competition. The clean, neat appearance and smooth alignment make it a great value.

Not only that, but the fast-rolling tires, extensive drivetrain, and confidence, stable handling allow it to adapt to the terrain of different roads as well. And the Kenda Small Block 8 tires (24×1.5″) have a very strong grip even on muddy roads and maintain a relatively stable driving speed.

At $500, the Precaliber 24 8-speed is perhaps a little on the expensive side. If price is not an essential factor, then you can give it a try. If you just want to get your kids started with riding, the Precaliber 24 8-speed may be more appropriate.

Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed vs Schwinn High Timber ALX 24in Step-Thru

Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed vs Schwinn High Timber ALX 24in Step-Thru

If your child has a strong interest in mountain and trail riding, then the Schwinn High Timber ALX 24in Step-Thru might be something to try.

The Schwinn it comes with is perhaps the better choice for mountain riding. Even on winding and bumpy roads, the Schwinn shock fork absorbs extreme bumps in the road, reducing the impact between your child and the ground. Not only that but the front and rear mechanical disc brakes allow you to take on a variety of surfaces.

The special tires for off-road mountain trails will hold tight to the ground, keeping the body stable while maintaining a high travel speed and keeping your child safe. If you want to develop your child’s love for off-road riding, the Schwinn High Timber ALX 24in Step-Thru may suit your expectations. But you’ll have to pay $30 more for it than the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed. Therefore, the Trek Precaliber 24 8-speed is still a cost-effective option.

Trek Bikes Brand Review: A Close Look at the Iconic USA Bike Brand

woman riding a red road bike made by the trek bikes brand

T rek Bikes is one of the most popular and the most respected USA-based bike brands right now, and for a good reason. They offer models in all categories and all price points, for all types of cyclists. Let’s learn more in our in-depth overview!

No matter if you are an absolute beginner who can’t even ride, or you’re a pro cyclist with years of experience in the legs, Trek Bikes has a bike for you.

With more than 40 unique models, it’s both very easy and very challenging to find exactly what you’re looking for. Our in-depth overview teaches you all you need to know about each model series and many other things related to Trek.

Technologies

Trek’s range of models, trek mountain bikes, trek bikes – road, trek hybrid & city bikes, trek gravel & cyclocross bikes, trek adventure & touring bikes, trek tt/triathlon bikes, trek electric bikes, electra bikes, trek women’s bikes, kids’ trek bikes, new or used trek bikes.

History

The first bikes Trek made were touring steel frames , but as the business evolved, so did the selection of models. Soon enough, Trek began producing road racing bikes, and then mountain bikes from both aluminum and carbon.

The first Trek-branded all-aluminum bike left the production lines in 1985 and the first full-carbon model came out in 1989.

Today, Trek offers high-profile road bikes such as Domane, Madone, and Emonda; hardtail and full-suspension models like Marlin , X-Caliber, or Slash; Checkpoint and Boone gravel and CX bikes; and dozens of other popular model names in a wide range of categories.

Over the years, Trek has pioneered or perfected many of the best technological solutions used in the top-level cycling sport.

Over the years, many of these advanced technologies have been passed down from best Trek bikes to mid-range and entry-level classes, improving the cycling experience for beginner and intermediate cyclists as well.

Technologies Trek use

Here are some of the most ground-breaking technologies developed by Trek so far:

  • OCLV Carbon:  Optimum Compaction Low Void carbon frames developed in 1991 — some of the lightest and stiffest in the world.
  • Alpha Aluminum: Trek’s refined aluminum frames that rival carbon frames in terms of strength and overall weight.
  • Active Braking Pivot: A revolutionary patented system developed to keep the rear suspension working while braking.
  • RE:aktiv: Advanced suspension system that provides dynamic flow that automatically adapts its performance to the rider and the type of the terrain.
  • Full Floater: Trek’s rear suspension system that allows for extremely supple and responsive rear suspension action, giving you the impression of bottomless travel.
  • IsoSpeed Suspension: Road bike suspension that decouples the seat tube from the top tube, diminishing the fatiguing impacts of the road.

One of the secrets to Trek Bikes’ long-lasting success is that they make bicycles for EVERYONE. No matter what kind of riding you wish to do or how much you can stretch your budget, you can find a suitable model in Trek’s lineup.

Their beginner bikes such as FX, 820, or Marlin start at around $400; whereas their elite road models such as Domane or Madone cost upward of $12,000.

The HP series (28 mph max speed) provides maximum power, whereas the LT series (20 mph max) offers a good balance between power and weight. These bikes cost up to $12,500 , but they have the best groupsets you can find, the lightest and stiffest carbon, and the highest-end Bosch electronic parts.

Best for: Road riders with money to spare, who want the speed, weight, and performance of a standard road bike, coupled with electronics that will assist them along hilly sections.

Trek Electra Bikes

In 2014, Trek acquired the Electra Bicycle Company , which is now part of Trek’s brand. That is why you can see many Electra bikes on Trek’s official website.

The Electra brand offers a wide range of city, cruiser, and hybrid bikes built around aluminum or steel frames and intended for daily recreational and fitness riding.

Electra’s lineup also includes electric models (“Go!” in the model name) and numerous kids’ bikes with a wide range of wheel sizes. These are quality and affordable bicycles, even though they don’t have “Trek” written all over them.

Below is a full list of Electra model series available on Trek’s website:

Trek's Women bikes

Trek advertises all of their bikes as unisex, although the smaller models are more suitable for women.

In previous years, Trek came out with two kinds of models, but pretty much all of the 2024 range is unisex.

The trick is, smaller models come with a curved top tube to make mounting the bike easier, but for bigger models, the top tube is straight.

Electra Kids Bikes 16″, 20″, 24″

Electra Kids Bikes

At the moment, Trek offers a wide range of kids’ bikes under the Electra brand. These bikes are available with 16″, 20″, and 24″ wheels, so they are suitable for different ages. Electra does not have any balance bikes, but there are many 16″ and 20′ models with training wheels. There are also single-speed and multi-gear models for younger and older kids. The best thing about them is fun and colorful designs!

Best for:  Kids and teenagers of all ages, for riding around the block, commutes to school, or family weekend rides on bike paths.

Kickster by Trek

Kickster is the only balance bike Trek offers. It costs around $160 and it comes with 12″ wheels, so it’s suitable for kids who are roughly 34″-40″ tall. It’s the best bike for very young riders to learn how to ride, practice balance, and progress on their own terms.

Best for:  Toddlers who need to learn how to maintain balance on two wheels.

Precaliber, Wahoo & Roscoe

Precaliber, Wahoo, Roscoe

Precaliber, Wahoo, and Roscoe are Kids’ MTB series with wider tires, rim or disc brakes, and rigid or suspended forks. Trek Roscoe is available only with 24″ wheels, whereas Precaliber and Wahoo can be bought with 16″, 20″, 24″, and even 26″ wheels. These kids’ bikes are excellent for both on and off-road riding , trips to school, family rides, and any other fun cycling activities.

Best for: Children of all ages who need versatile bikes that they can ride on paved and unpaved roads, as well as on bike paths.

Trek MT-201

The MT-201 pedal trailer can be attached to the parent’s bike in front and allows the child to tag along and practice balancing while pedaling. The saddle is fully adjustable and the trailer comes with a 20″ wheel that makes it suitable for children between 45″-52″ tall.

Best for:  Toddlers and preschoolers who still need to perfect their balancing skills but want to follow their parents anywhere they go.

new or used bike

That means that you can probably easily sell them when you decide to upgrade and get a decent part of your investment back. Of course, assuming the bike is still in good condition.

If you have the money to spare, we recommend going for a new Trek bike that you will be able to sell for a decent chunk of the original price in the future, if you decide to do so.

Whenever possible, new is always better. It’s true that you can buy a bike with better specs for the same amount of money if you look for used, but you should only do it if you have enough experience to determine whether the bike is in good shape.

Trek bikes sizing charts

One of the benefits of buying a Trek bicycle is that you can usually choose from a large number of sizes. Most Trek bikes are usually available in 6 to 7 sizes , but some series come in up to 8 sizes (Domane).

Trek also offers size-specific wheels on many of their MTB models, such as the Marlin series. That means that the smallest frame sizes come with 27.5″ wheels, whereas larger frame sizes are 29ers. This ensures the best possible fit for riders of all heights.

One big plus is that Trek also offers height and inseam-based bike size charts , which is something that many other brands avoid. Therefore, to find the right size, just compare your height and inseam to the chart provided for every single bike.

I was interested in buying a used xcalibur 7 and it’s a woman’s model. I can’t find any differences in the mens and woman’s besides the seat and coil spring. Is the frame and everything else the same? Thanks

Hi Jack, Good question. Unlike other mountain bikes with the top tube curving down for women’s bikes, there is not much difference except the frame size and the things you mentioned perhaps?

What’s the difference sl series. I’m confused, can you please explain.

Hi Antonio, It’s just an acronym: AL: Aluminium. CF: Carbon Fibre. CF SL: Carbon Fibre Super Light. CF SLX: Carbon Fibre Super Light Extreme etc 😉
