The 1975

The 1975 has announced the “Still… At Their Very Best” fall tour, the band’s biggest North American tour to date. The Matty Healy-led group will take their fifth album, “Being Funny in a Foreign Language,” across the U.S. and Canada for the second time since its October 2022 release.

The tour will kick off Sept. 26 in Sacramento, Calif., and end Dec. 2 in Seattle.

The band had teased the tour on social media throughout the month, posting vague visuals and linking to an online registration form.

Popular on Variety

The tour evolved throughout its initial North American run, from altered setlists to surprise guest cameos from Phoebe Bridgers and Bleachers. Healy made headlines for bringing fans onstage during “Robbers” and passionately kissing them.

Variety praised the band’s latest performance at Madison Square Garden , calling the concert a “captivating exposition from a band that embraces nearly every pop trope yet demands to be taken seriously.” The band will return to the famed New York City venue on Nov. 14.

A fan presale begins June 21 at 10 a.m. local time, while public tickets will go on sale June 23 at 10 a.m. on the 1975’s website .

The 1975 Are Still at Their Very Best for New North American Tour Dates

By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

The 1975 are returning to the States this fall for a second run of North American tour dates. The UK band’s Still…At Their Very Best trek will kick off in California this September.

The 1975’s latest run supports their 2022 album Being Funny in a Foreign Language, released in October. The group played a run of arena shows in North America last fall and have been performing worldwide all year. They are currently headlining festivals across the UK and Europe this summer.

The band released a new episode of their web series, A Theatrical Performance of an Intimate Moment, to announce the tour. The eight-minute video sees singer Matty Healy going through a morning routine before heading to work at a lab and experimenting on a patch of greenery.

In other The 1975 news, Healy recently responded to Noel Gallagher’s comments about him at a 1975 show in Dublin last week (June 7).

“Noel Gallagher called me a ‘slack-jawed fuckwit’… I love Noel Gallagher. We asked Liam to open up and he said he would have done it but he was busy,” he told the crowd.

“But I love Noel Gallagher… He’s just getting on,” he added. “The difference between me and Noel is that I do a series of interviews to promote an album, whereas he does an album to promote a series of interviews. But we love you Noel. Get Oasis back together!”

At the show, Healy also acted as the support slot for his own band, after  Caroline Polachek pulled out at the last minute due to losing her voice .

In his stripped-back solo set, he performed covers of ‘I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You’ by Colin Hay, and Donny Hathaway’s ‘A Song For You’, which was performed alongside touring guitarist Jamie Squire. He also  performed the live debut of their song ‘Then Because She Goes’ .

The 1975 announce 39-date North American tour

The massive still...at their very best tour features shows across the u.s. and canada, beginning in september of this year..

1975 the tour

The 1975 have announced a behemoth run of shows in the U.S. and Canada slated for this fall. The band's Still...at their very best tour kicks off on September 26 at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center, and will wrap up almost three whole months later at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena. In celebration, they've also released Episode 4 of their absurdist video series "A Theatrical Performance Of An Intimate Moment."

Still...at their very best is a continuation of the 1975's ongoing At Their Very Best tour, which has been marked by near-constant online discourse, mostly thanks to the antics of frontman Matty Healy. These include eating raw meat on stage, making out with fans, cameramen, and security guards, and — oh, yeah — dating Taylor Swift . These new shows promise an expanded production, but what that means is still anyone's guess.

The 1975 Announce 2022 Tour, Share Video for New Song “Happiness”: Watch

By Madison Bloom

The 1975

The 1975 have released the second single from their upcoming LP Being Funny in a Foreign Language and announced a North American tour (dubbed the At Their Very Best Tour). The new track is called “Happiness.” Check out the band’s Samuel Bradley –directed video below.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the 1975’s Matty Healy discussed his band’s new single:

“Happiness” is like… there’s literally loads of us in the room on that track. Locked eyes... doesn’t really have much structure. It came through like jamming. And we haven’t done that in like years. So we just wanted this record to be really like a captured moment and not be too constructed and even produced that much…. We did it in like a day or so. And it’s us having fun. And I think that there’s this real desire in art to see something remarkable with as little technology as possible.

In addition, Healy discussed working with Jack Antonoff on Being Funny in a Foreign Language :

I love Jack’s work, and those Lana [Del Rey] records, in particular, like, some of my favorite stuff. So we were talking about that. We became friends talking about production and what I was doing and what he was wanting to do and what I was wanting to do. And then I kind of just thought, “Well, this is like a really nice new energy.” I don’t… because we are so closed, me and George [Daniel], we’ve always been so closed. “Why don’t you like come down to the studio and see what happens?” And then he did. And, then, ever since, we were just great, great friends.

Healy continued:

He’s so good. What he does is identifies what an artist is really good at or where the truth is coming from. And it’s a bit like, if you think of like a great comedian, the language of like sense of humor, they can sense where the humor is in the situation. Jack’s like, he’s like me, you know what I mean? He’s like culture vulture, he’s like full of references. He knows his shit, man. He understands what artists need at any given moment. And it happened very, very naturally.  And I think that we were just feeling loads of stuff out. And all these things just kind of came together. Yeah, and me and Jack were just like talking about music and then those conversations, me, Jack, and George. And then those conversations became about a 1975 record that felt more live. And then I was a bit like, “Well, why are we talking about this? Why don’t we just do this?”

Being Funny in a Foreign Language is out October 14 via Dirty Hit . The album title was first teased in postcards to fans back in June. The 1975 recorded the new record at Real World Studios in Wiltshire, England, as well as Electric Lady Studios in New York.

The new LP follows the band’s 2020 full-length Notes on a Conditional Form , and includes lead single “ Part of the Band ,” which arrived last month with a video directed by Samuel Bradley . The song features vocals from Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner on the chorus.

The 1975 announced this week that the band will go on an “indefinite hiatus” from performing after the end of its ongoing tour, which ends in the spring.

The band made the announcement during Tuesday’s performance in Sacramento at the Golden 1 Center, the first stop of its Still ... At Their Very Best tour.

“It’s wonderful you’re all here,” the band’s frontman, Matty Healy , told the crowd on Tuesday evening, according to video of the performance . “After this tour, we will be going on an indefinite hiatus with shows, so it’s wonderful to have you guys with us tonight. Thank you so much.”

Representatives for the 1975 did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment.

The 1975 set cut short in Malaysia after Matty Healy criticizes country’s LGBTQ+ laws

The 1975 had their set at a Malaysian music festival cut short after lead singer Matty Healy called out the country’s government for its LGBTQ+ laws.

July 21, 2023

The 1975’s tour includes shows across North America and Europe, including a sold-out show at the Hollywood Bowl in October plus a Pechanga Arena gig in San Diego this coming Saturday. The tour’s final show is scheduled for March 24 in Amsterdam.

The British pop rock band, which formed in 2002, has been performing almost nonstop for the past several years, whether at festivals or on the road for their buzzy At Their Very Best tour, which ran from November 2022 until August. Their performances became viral as Healy regularly kissed doting fans on the lips after serenading them throughout the tour.

Most famously, at a music festival in Malaysia in July, the 1975’s bassist, Ross MacDonald, kissed Healy on the lips after the vocalist blasted the Malaysian government’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws, such as criminalizing same-sex relations. The crowd cheered on the speech and the kiss, but the set was subsequently cut short by organizers as government officials halted the music festival . The 1975 is now banned from playing in the country.

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy reportedly split after reportedly dating

Pop superstar Taylor Swift and the 1975 frontman Matty Healy have reportedly called it quits less than two months after they reportedly started dating.

June 5, 2023

However, Healy ultimately stole the spotlight throughout tour due to a highly publicized yet ultimately unconfirmed romantic relationship with Taylor Swift, which reportedly came to an end in June .

Swift and Healy sparked romance rumors shortly after the “Lavender Haze” hitmaker broke up with her actor boyfriend of six years , Joe Alwyn. Though neither musician publicly confirmed their relationship, Healy attended multiple Swift shows during her sold-out Eras tour — even joining opening act Phoebe Bridgers onstage in Nashville.

Healy also made headlines for a controversial podcast interview in which he and comedians Nick Mullen and Adam Friedland mocked rapper Ice Spice’s ethnicity. Healy also egged on jokes about Japanese incarceration during World War II and joked about his own sexual behavior related to a porn website that prominently features Black women.

Taylor Swift, Ice Spice collaboration faces backlash over Matty Healy controversy

Controversy around Matty Healy eclipses celebrations of the star-powered ‘Midnights (Deluxe)’ collaboration between Taylor Swift and Ice Spice.

May 24, 2023

In April, Healy apologized to Ice Spice during the band’s performance in Auckland, New Zealand, saying his apology was “not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a d—. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.”

Times reporters Christi Carras, Carlos De Loera and Astrid Kayembe contributed to this report.

Curve’s production of A Chorus Line.

‘I don’t know if my body can do this’: does A Chorus Line still ring true for dancers?

As the 1975 musical about Broadway hoofers sets off on tour, professionals reveal how much has – and hasn’t – changed since its debut

‘I want it strong! Make it sharp! Take it on the downbeat and 5, 6, 7, 8!” A mass of laser-focused, high-kicking dancers move as if their lives depended on it – an epic battle royale, defeating their rivals round by round. Or an audition for a Broadway show, in other words. This one’s from A Chorus Line. It’s a musical with enduring appeal – Nikolai Foster’s acclaimed 2021 production goes on UK tour this summer.

A Chorus Line’s stories of performers struggling with troubled childhoods, sexuality, ageism, injury, breakdowns, poverty and thwarted ambition all came from real-life testimonies of Broadway dancers that director Michael Bennett recorded in late-night confessionals. The picture is one of an unforgiving career, but how true to life does the 1975 musical feel for dancers today?

“What’s real is that it’s a struggle,” says former West End dancer Terence Rodia, who now runs a management agency. “It’s a tough life, living from paycheck to paycheck, job to job.” But plenty of things do change, such as the trope of the heartless, sharp-tongued director, played in Richard Attenborough’s 1985 film version by Michael Douglas. “Nowadays we’re really trying to make the industry a better place,” says Rodia. “We’re trying to be kind to each other.”

Still, you can’t take the sting out of an audition. “I left college at 18 and I’m 37 this year, and it doesn’t get easier,” says Ashley Andrews, a British dancer based in New York and currently associate choreographer on the US and UK tours of Jesus Christ Superstar. “Walking into auditions, it’s truly like A Chorus Line: Love me! Give me a job! Am I enough? What more do you need from me?!”

In the film, hundreds of dancers line up down the block, but it’s rare these days to have open calls – where anyone can turn up and audition. Most auditions are invite only, via your agent, and the first round is often by self-tape.

“The hardest part is getting the audition in the first place,” says dancer Georgina Clarke, 24. There are more theatre schools now and more dancers, and competition is fierce. How on earth do you stand out? It’s not always having the best technique. Andrews often works with choreographer Drew McOnie, who, he says, is “totally driven by feeling and vibe; he wants electricity”.

A Chorus Line’s famous number Dance: 10, Looks: 3, about dancer Val getting plastic surgery (“Tits and ass / can change your life”), suggests how much looks matter. No one I speak to knows anyone who has had surgery, although Clarke had her teeth straightened after watching herself back on self-tapes so often. Natalie Chua, 31, who has been performing in the West End for 12 years (currently in Cabaret), says: “I think different bodies and people are a lot more celebrated now; it’s more inclusive.”

‘There are days where you’re like, I don’t know if my body can do this’ … Natalie Chua

What about the cliche that dancers are constantly on a diet? “People would think it’s hilarious what we eat!” says Chua, listing the backstage snacks: doughnuts, bagels, sweets ... “In every job I’ve done, Fruit-tella has played a big part.” What about ageism? A Chorus Line’s Sheila is deemed over the hill at 30. “Now we have dancers who have children and go back on stage,” says Rodia. But you can’t stop time. “I was a much better dancer at 30 than I was at 21,” says Andrews. “But my body didn’t hurt at 21.”

Does every dancer have a tragic backstory like the ones we see in the musical? Not so much, although many are drawn to dance because “it’s a way of escaping, and letting out your emotions”, suggests Clarke. “Dancers have to be connected to their emotions, they have to be connected to their bodies,” says Andrews. “You have to be completely, completely vulnerable. That’s when you truly find yourself soaring.”

There are a lot of downsides to a dancer’s career: injuries, sacrifices, endless knockbacks. “I’ve got friends who’ve done a couple of West End shows and then they’re out of work for a year,” says Rodia. And there’s the money. Often dancers have done more training than anyone else on stage, and they’re being paid the least – although it depends where you are. On Broadway, says Andrews, someone in the ensemble of a long-running show might be on $2,700 (£2,200) a week, but on the equivalent show in London they’d be paid £700.

So why do it? At heart, A Chorus Line is about dance as vocation, and that’s as true as ever. “There are days where you’re like, I don’t know if my body can do this,” says Chua. “But the adrenaline rush, the community we have, being in front of the audience – you can’t beat it. It’s like a siren call.”

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy Spotted Holding Hands Amid Dating Rumors

Taylor swift and the 1975's matty healy were recently seen holding hands during a new york city outing with jack antonoff..

Taylor Swift is filling a PDA-blank space with Matty Healy .

The "Bejeweled" singer was spotted holding hands with The 1975 frontman amid rumors the two have begun a love story of their own. As seen in a photo taken by a fan and shared on Twitter May 11, Taylor, dressed in a yellow outfit, walked hand-in-hand with Matty as they made their way through an outdoor area of a restaurant.

And it appears they weren't alone for the evening. Taylor and Matty were joined by pal Jack Antonoff , who was also pictured in the now-viral snapshot, and his fiancée Margaret Qualley for a double date at New York City's Casa Cipriani, according to TMZ .

The outing comes six days after Matty, 34, was photographed supporting Taylor, 33, at her Nashville concert. On May 5, the "Somebody Else" singer was seen watching the concert from a VIP tent in the crowd.

The next day, he joined Phoebe Bridgers , Taylor's opening act, onstage to perform on the guitar .

The romance rumors between Taylor and Matty aren't exactly new, as their history goes way back—nearly a decade, to be exact. In 2014, Matty sparked dating speculation when he shared that the two had swapped phone numbers after meeting at his band's concert. "I mean bloody hell, what am I going to do?" he quipped at the time. "Go out with Taylor Swift? She's a sensation, I wouldn't say no."
