Travel is still disrupted after a day of heavy rain across parts of Scotland – when a person was swept into water.

Emergency services were called to the River Don in Inverurie in Aberdeenshire on Friday afternoon after a report of someone in difficulty.

It came after heavy rain battered much of the east of Scotland, with several severe flood warnings issued.

Rail services in some of worst affected places were unable to run, with operator ScotRail saying the “extreme rainfall” means it is “unlikely” trains in some areas will restart before 12pm on Saturday.

After “yesterday’s extreme rainfall, services on the Fife Circle & between Aberdeen & Dundee are unlikely to start before noon today”, it tweeted.

Staff from Network Rail need to assess conditions on the rails in daylight, it added.

Torrential rain hit much of the north east of Scotland, with roads and rail travel impacted, schools closed and centres set up for those unable to stay in their homes.

Power cuts also affected areas including Inverurie, Kintore, Stonehaven, Portlethen and Hatton of Fintray, as the Met Office said over a month’s rain had fallen in Charr in Aberdeenshire, with the total recorded as 140 millimetres.

There was localised flooding in some parts of Edinburgh, with pictures showing the Crewe Toll roundabout in the west of the city submerged.

On Friday evening, justice secretary and lead minister for resilience, Keith Brown, chaired a meeting of the Scottish Government’s resilience committee.

He said: “The Scottish Government’s resilience arrangements have been activated to ensure preparations and appropriate measures are in place, and we will continue to monitor the situation over the course of the weekend.

“We are in close contact with resilience partners, local authorities and the emergency services to ensure people in the affected areas receive the latest information, advice and support where needed.”

Travel chaos as roads closed, cars stuck and people stranded during third day of Storm Babet

The A90 between Stonehaven and Dundee will remain closed until at least tomorrow morning.

Cars driving through flooded water in Aberdeenshire.

Storm Babet has been causing major disruption on roads across the region, with it being confirmed the A90 will remain closed today.

Traffic Scotland confirmed the route, which connects Aberdeen and Dundee, will remain shut between Stonehaven and the latter until at least tomorrow morning.

The route closed yesterday after Storm Babet hit the region, which saw hundreds of people evacuated from their homes in the Angus town of Brechin due to severe flooding.

Flooded roads near Kintore.

A post on Facebook by Traffic Scotland said: “A full inspection will be carried out in daylight hours on Sunday. Local access to Brechin will remain.”

The red and amber weather warnings, which were in place from Thursday, has now ended, however, disruption remains.

A yellow weather warning remains in place for rain until 11.59pm tonight.

The Met Office says “another spell of heavy rain will bring further flooding to parts of eastern and northern Scotland”.

With the A90 remaining shut, this is causing not just disruption to motorists, but to public transport as well.

Megabus has said that due to “ongoing weather issues”, they are unable to provide services between. Aberdeen and Dundee.

Issues affecting supermarket supplies

However, they have announced that passengers booked on any of these services will be refunded within the next seven days.

Due to the major route’s closure, it has resulted in supermarkets in the north-east having bare shelves.

Most of ScotRail services in the north and north-east are still off, although tomorrow’s services from Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street to Inverness will still be on.

Kintore railway station and flooding.

As well as this, services on the West Highland Line from Glasgow Queen Street will carry on as normal.

Tomorrow’s scheduled ScotRail trains between Aberdeen and Glasgow Queen Street will start and terminate at Dundee, while the service between Inverness and Aberdeen will begin and end at Elgin.

The ones between Aberdeen and Edinburgh are off.

Road closed in Inverurie.

Meanwhile, engineering works are to take place tomorrow on the railway line between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh, Thurso and Wick respectively.

Elsewhere across the region, floods hit roads, with problems at the Toll of Birness, which links Ellon to both Fraserburgh and Peterhead.

Flooding in Aberdeenshire.

The A98 route between Banff and Macduff was closed, as was the Bridge of Feugh near Banchory, which was shut due to rising water levels.

In Fetterangus in Aberdeenshire, a road in the village was shut by police after being severely flooded.

Earlier today there were reports of a mini stranded in flood water on the B974 near Strachan.

Scottish Water investigating 'unexplained' chemical waste reports in Aberdeenshire

An investigation has been launched into the potential unauthorised dumping of chemical waste in the public sewer network in Aberdeenshire.

Scottish Water said it has experienced "unexplained influxes" of chemicals on several occasions, particularly at its water treatment works that serve Kemnay, Oldmeldrum and Daviot.

The publicly-owned water company said the pattern and nature of the problem "suggests the possibility of waste being dumped in significant quantities" and said that it "could originate from a much wider area".

As a result, staff have been faced with a "race against time" to stabilise and restore the treatment process to protect the local environment from damage.

Scottish Water is now urging people in the area to be alert to any "unusual activity" by commercial vehicles like tanker lorries which could be linked to the problems being experienced.

The firm said many businesses use tankers in the area legitimately, but it is unusual for the vehicles to be discharging anything to the sewer network.

Tankers normally operate within Scottish Water's fenced water treatment works or at other sites that are designed to receive them.

Scottish Water said a specialist team has been engaging with large commercial customers in the area to ensure there have been no problems with the waste they are licensed to discharge into the sewer.

Craig Low, regional waste water operations manager, said: "Each of our waste water treatment works across Scotland is designed to meet the needs of homes and businesses within its area, while protecting the local environment.

"The population of 'good bacteria' which plays a crucial role in cleaning the water thrives in stable conditions.

"Any sudden and significant change in the strength and composition of waste water has potential to disrupt the treatment process and harm the natural environment that it works to protect.

"Following several events which our teams have had to respond to in Kemnay, Oldmeldrum and Daviot, we are investigating all potential causes.

"We are seeking the help of local communities in being alert to any unusual activity by tankers in the area which could be linked to the problems we've been experiencing."

Pete Buttigieg says Transportation Department is working to avoid summer travel disruptions

The government has pressed airlines to be more realistic on scheduling, he said.

Just ahead of what airlines say could be the busiest Memorial Day weekend for travel since before COVID-19, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is sharing how his department is prepping for the potentially record-breaking season.

"We know for sure that there is going to be a very high level of demand, a lot of traffic and a lot of pressure on the system," Buttigieg said in an interview with ABC News.

Amid an ongoing air traffic controller shortage that's been partly to blame for disruptions across the system, Buttigieg said the Transportation Department continues to hire and train controllers even as key facilities remain below targets.

"If you look at the optimal numbers, the numbers we like to be at, it is higher than where we are right now. That's why we're doing so much hiring, and it's why we're pushing to make sure that we get a budget as these negotiations go on [between the White House and Congress] that allow us to continue to pick up the pace on that hiring," he said, referring to current spending talks on Capitol Hill.

Major U.S. airlines are touting their expected passenger numbers and schedules ahead of the holiday weekend. United Airlines said it's preparing for its busiest Memorial Day in more than a decade, expecting to carry nearly 2.9 million passengers.

Meanwhile Delta Air Lines said it's expecting to fly 2.8 million customers over the holiday -- a 17% increase from last year. And American Airlines said it will carry more than 2.9 million customers, operating over 26,000 flights.

Those numbers underline the airline industry's continued bounce-back from its pandemic low even as some service periods have been marred by major flight delays and cancellations .

MORE: Airlines prepping for busiest Memorial Day weekend since before pandemic

When asked if he thinks airlines can meet the high demand, Buttigieg said his department has been "pressing" the companies to be more realistic with scheduling and actively supporting those efforts in order to avoid more headline-grabbing meltdowns .

"In the New York airspace, we worked with airlines to permit an approach that would allow there to be larger aircraft, which means more passengers with fewer departures, which can mean less congestion," Buttigieg said.

"There's always a question whether airlines are properly aligning their schedules that they're promising with their resources and staffing that they bring to the table, including enough of a buffer to deal with situations that may come up," he said. "Look, there's always weather, and you have to be ready to absorb those issues and respond and get back to normal as quickly as possible."

PHOTO: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg gives a speech on the Hudson River tunnel project at the West Side Yard on Jan. 31, 2023, in New York City.

After increased delays and cancellations among U.S. carriers last summer , Buttigieg called such disruptions "unacceptable."

Now, the secretary said he's seen "a lot of improvements coming into this year" but it's "no guarantee that summer is going to go well."

"We've been pressing the airlines to do better and better on things that are under their control and collaborating." Buttigieg said.

The Biden administration recently announced it would seek to require airlines to provide consumers with boosted compensation, including meals and hotels, if they are left stranded and it's the airline's fault.

Critics say if the rule is put in place, it would end up passing the cost on to consumers. Buttigieg said he doesn't buy that.

MORE: Biden, Buttigieg push for airlines to compensate passengers for controllable delays, cancellations

"Look, any time that we do a rule or we try to hold companies accountable, they tend to say this. But we already know that this is an approach that can work because there are many other countries that have rules that require airlines to compensate passengers and also have very competitive airfares," he said.

Heading into summer, negotiations are ongoing between various pilot groups and airlines, with some unions voting to authorize strikes.

While the probability of a pilot strike occurring in the U.S. is very slim, Buttigieg said, "We're urging the parties to come to agreements in each of the areas where a contract is in play and understand that the pilots who are a very essential part of the aviation system expect to be compensated well, and their quality-of-life concerns, too. And airlines need to be able to run their business."

New way to recycle vapes at all household recycling centres in Aberdeenshire

A new and safer way to recycle vapes is available at all household recycling centres across Aberdeenshire to minimise the risk of fire.

Aberdeenshire Council’s recycling centres now have specialised drums that will be used to safely store vapes or e-cigarettes and layer them with vermiculite.

Vermiculite is a mineral that minimizes the risk of fire associated with lithium-ion batteries, effectively safeguarding the materials during storage and transport.

If it is not exposed to leaks, vermiculite is also entirely reusable and makes the collection of vapes much safer, especially now that they are collected separately from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment containers.

If the battery inside a vape is easily removable, then that battery alone can and should still be removed and disposed of in battery recycling receptacles.

"...The vapes are manually dismantled and recycled at our partner facility in Portsmouth where we are recovering around 94% of all materials." — A Veolia spokesperson

Vapes cannot be safely recycled in kerbside collections. They should never be put in any kerbside collection bins or battery bags due to the risk of contamination and fire.

One recent and local example of a vape fire occurred in September 2023 when a collection of disposable vapes exploded during routine compaction at Westhill recycling centre after being incorrectly placed in a general waste skip.

Councillor Alan Turner, chair of the council’s Infrastructure Services Committee (ISC), said: “Vapes are an ongoing and ever-increasing issue for the environment in terms of litter, material resources, and the risk of fire. With this solution in place, there is now a safer way to store and recycle them.

“If you are not sure where the drums are at your local recycling centre, please feel free to ask a member of staff and they will be happy to help you.”

ISC vice chair Councillor Isobel Davidson said: “Despite being marketed as disposable, vapes are actually made from valuable materials like aluminium, copper, and lithium. The processes for creating such materials can be very carbon intensive, which makes recycling vapes even more important.”

Binned vapes are part of the fastest growing sources of electrical waste in the UK. The number of disposable vapes being thrown away in the UK has grown across a single year from 1.3 to five million per week, research from Material Focus has shown.

Recycling just ten tonnes of lithium from these products could supply enough material to produce batteries for approximately 1,200 electric cars.

Veolia—who rolled out the UK’s first nationwide vape collection service—were awarded the contract for the collection of vapes from Aberdeenshire Council’s household recycling centres.

Veolia now facilitates the collection and transportation of the vapes to a recycling facility where valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, and manganese will be extracted. Other materials will be manually dismantled, cleaned and recycled to resume their role in the manufacturing industry and help toward building a circular economy solution for vapes.

aberdeenshire travel news

A Veolia spokesperson said: "Veolia is proud to be at the forefront of recycling this difficult to treat waste stream, supporting over 380 household recycling sites across the UK to safely collect vapes for recycling.

"Once collected, the vapes are manually dismantled and recycled at our partner facility in Portsmouth where we are recovering around 94% of all materials.

"This innovation is just a part of our determination to discover and deliver solutions for ecological transformation"
