Gabriels Mix Future & Past of Soul On Explosive ‘Angels & Queens Part 2’ (ALBUM REVIEW)

It felt like we simultaneously and collectively decided that the soul trio Gabriels was going to be the next face of the genre. It was only last year when the group released their Angels & Queens project, a seven-track expedition into the expansive harmonies and grandiose arrangements that have become signatures for the trio, and properly introduced themselves to the world at large. This project introduced Gabriels in a firework-esque entrance and forced a breath of fresh air to rush over the genre of soul, reimagining what the genre can sound like when the perfect balance of influence and fearlessness is hit.
This week, Gabriels are doing some internal reimagining with the release of Angels & Queens Part 2 and expanded and rearranged sequel to their 2022 breakout. This new set of songs includes the original seven compositions along with six brand-new tracks that add to the already wildly colorful world of Gabriels, all while continuing to challenge themselves with sonic leaps that cement their name into the world of modern soul.
With all eyes on Gabriels, their approach to this latest release feels like a bold creative move. The trio of vocalist Jacob Lusk, keyboardist/producer Ryan Hope, and violinist/composer Ari Balouzian trust their vision for a sequel to their breakout project. Including a set of songs that have been circulating the internet in some sort of melodic takeover for just under a year could’ve been the downfall of Angels & Queens Part 2 . Instead of these young yet classic songs becoming stale and simply tacked on to a different set of songs, the two worlds intermingle and bring new viewpoints to the songs we already love while elevating the experience of the new tracks.
The songs are properly recontextualized into a whole new universe, building on the work put in on Part 1 without it feeling too forced or dry. The baritone harmonies and soaring strings of the previously released “To the Moon and Back” have a new meaning when placed next to minimal arrangements and passionately delivered balladry of “Professional”. Gabriels were able to flush out their full vision of what a debut could look like while still making it seem natural and sleek, an award-winning performance within itself yet we haven’t even brushed the musicality deployed on Angels & Queens Part 2 .
Gabriels were able to mix southern-fried soul with tempos for modern times, a triumphant yet humble concoction that gives the album such a unique personality. With their love for lush string sections, the rolling pianos that drive songs like “Professional”, the group’s ability to seamlessly transition from one era of soul to their futuristic take on the genre, Gabriels realized the pressure amounting around this release and blissfully poured it all into the music.
The tension on “We Will Remember” boils over on the looser and intensely infectious “Love and Hate in a Different Time”, a contradiction that allows the LP to flow with a carefree gusto and introduces us to a new side of a group we’re all still getting to know. The chemistry between the three members is the driving force of this album although it feels like most of their conversations happen within the songs themselves. Hope and Balouzian send harmonious signals directly to Lusk, a cosmic form of communication that boils over on the album’s intense tones and unreserved lyrics.
Now that the final pieces of Gabriel’s debut album have finally fallen into place, there is nothing left to do except sit back in awe. Angles & Queens Part 2 might be a continuation of the sonic worlds the group explored on their initial release but Gabriels somehow made it feel like we’re hearing the songs of Part 1 for the first time all over again. Their vision has fully formed into a 13-song escapade through arrangements that range from a lighthearted walk through the neighborhood to a menacing storm cloud. The way the trio approached the structure of their debut allowed it to become the mystical soul journey it truly is.
While Gabriels wear their influences on their sleeves, they are able to melt them down to form their own forward-thinking take that is as free and courageous as the genre has sounded in a long time.

Gabriels announce two-part debut album, ‘Angels & Queens’
The first instalment arrives this month.
By Joe Goggins
Gabriels have announced details of their debut album, to be released in two parts.
The Los Angeles soul trio will drop the first instalment of Angels & Queens before the month is out, with a September 30 release confirmed via Atlas Artists and Parlophone Records.
The second half will follow in March 2023, on a date yet to be specified. The band’s fellow Compton native, the Grammy-winning Sounwave, handles production duties, bringing with him to the studio an impressive pedigree, having worked with Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé in the past.
It marks the culmination of a meteoric 2022 rise for the three-piece; they’re defined by the hugely powerful vocals of Jacob Lusk, who’s backed by producer-composer Ari Balouzian and Sunderland-born producer and keyboardist Ryan Hope.
Speaking about Angels & Queens and elaborating on its two-part release, Gabriels said in a statement: “Our debut album is a unique exploration of love and loss from each of our differing perspectives. We were planning to release our album next year, but got the opportunity to collaborate with some of the most amazing people who initially were strangers, but within weeks became family in the most mind-blowing process.”
“As the first part of the album was recorded, we knew we wanted to share it with you as soon as possible,” they continued. “We couldn’t be more excited to announce that Angels & Queens – Part 1 is coming this September, and Part II will follow in March. THANK YOU Sounwave and Beach Noise.”
Beach Noise are a Los Angeles production trio who have also worked with Lamar, although the extent of their involvement with Angels & Queens remains unclear. For his part, Sounwave added: “I was instantly drawn in from the raw emotions and how limitless their range was. For this project we wanted to push the boundaries sonically that matched the intense and vulnerable feelings of each song.”

She came through the skies and she told it to me
Told me the words I was afraid to see
I’m weaker
Everyday I’m getting weaker
‘Need the angels to remind me
M angel : Through the light
Remember
Here my baby
Welcome to the tale of tales
Welcome to the tale of your own light, my child
Welcome to the light
From where I stand
Everything is glorious
Tears can be so soft
I miss my mother
miss my mother
miss my mother at night
She gave me life
I miss my brother
miss my brother
miss my brother all day
Ouh, we used to pray
I miss my lover
miss my lover
at night
Ouh, to hold me tight
I’m on the freeway
on the freeway
Because I can
Tears can be
So good for those who dive in them
let them run on my cheeks oh,
One more time
Tears are so soft
When you dive in them
Oh let them sail, ah
I miss my friends
I miss my friends
And the tenderness
Ouh, they give me cold hard looks, now
I miss my joy
I miss my joy
And my head
Look at my face !
What is happening now ?
So good for those who dive in them
Oh let them roll girl, yeah
Love is like this
Embrace when you can
Cause at night
When you’re all alone you think about it one more time
Oh let’s embrace them when we can
Oh, ‘sing my heart out
Tears can be so good let me pray
Let me pray for my salvation baby, now water
I don’t want more money more water
Oh, water
Mmmore water
I don’t want your money !
Water - ah
Is what I’m looking for
Tears can be so good baby
Dive in it, and forget it all
Tears can be so good let them
Roll on your face girl
On your face forever
Marvin descending
Young Marvin descending
Into this body of mine
I feel high all the time
Young Marvin forever in my heart
Yes I still do care for him
I still think I should see him
And the stars roll in my mind
Young Marvin all the time
Cause he knows
What goes inside of me
Inside
Of this body of mine
I wish I had the time
to picture you
in details for my heart
for when I need to be stronger
I need things to feel better
when I make sweet love to you
I waited all this time
can you please
explain this to my heart
But there he goes
So pretty and easy
He knows how much I feel
To see him move around the room
just for me
Ascending
such solace for my heart
I need to feel this one more time
I need to be inside this
I need to be
I need to feel this free
He knows just how i feel
and I wish I was as free as he can be
A day in the water
Do you want to spend a day
Just a day in the water
Just a day like no other
When nothing hurts your skin
Do you want to know
Do you want to feel the sun
But the sun from underwater
nothing burning your shoulders
nothing hurts within
Deeper and the deeper and the deeper and the deeper that I go
Softer it gets softer it gets softer it gets softer I don’t know
Father oh father oh father oh father let me go
I don’t want it no more
I hear them talking about it
But it sounds like the same old song
I see they worry about it
I’m so far ago they can’t be wrong
and I know it’s obvious
But I’m flying from what I can see
So let me be
Do you want to spend a day
And just stay in the water
And then taking another…
No, I can’t take no more, yeah
do you want to know
No, you’ll never know what it’s like
To be just underwater
And it looks like a mirror
But it blurs it all, yeah
Deeper and the deeper and the deeper and the deeper that I go
Softer, it gets softer it gets softer it gets softer I don’t know
so let me be
Full of life
PAIN SHIFTING
seize my head in regret
There might not be another vision
one that makes me forget I wish I was another person
and we still
Try every night to go make sense of it
Still try every night to bound over something
over love
white powder to forget
the taste of blood and how it burnt them
They all think that they’re safe, belated by the same old venom
and they steal ideas from your daughters
The one they want
Elsewhere naked offered divine and touched by them only
hm, full of life
FOR A
WHERE IT MAK ES
LONELY
A LIFE
AND DIE
i let go of my pride
For whatever reason I’m free
I let go dissolved into desires that were not made for me
There’s a scar
Take my hand and forget that i am just another woman
Even though you see me you’ll never let me be your boyfriend
Tell me lies
WHERE IT MAKES
Angels crying in my bed (ft Madonna)
Is it really sweet to be this lost
Is it really worth it
Is it really good to feel that sad
Will I ever outcome it
I saw you in my dream it wasn’t so bad
But then we didn’t kiss
Is it really love or is it blood
Dripping off my wrists
Oh ah
As I fall
I can hear
the sweet sound
Of angels crying in my bed
angels crying in my bed
And i want golden feathers
If they spring from my back
Oh lord i want them golden
the sweet sound
Angels crying in my bed
Angels crying
BIG EYE : And maybe we will
Almost fall in love
I will look into his eyes
And he into mine
My one single eye
The unfortunate other
Blinded by a punishing slap
And we will agree
That love can be blind
And he
Healthy boy, well fed, white with his rosy cheeks
Will wonder about me
Pity my bony body
Those thin ribs
and feel my twisted ears
And the scars on my hands
Reminder of the flirtation
of my skin
And the cruel volcano
And perhaps lift my skirt
Before he learns the greater horrors
I owe him the truth of me
So i will say to him,
end quote
I went to school
Track 10
Sweet lover of mine
Oh let me take you dancing
The scar of the foreigner
Let’s go dancing go dancing
Let’s go fucking go fucking
I am not so shy
Where lights are intervening
I am not so proud
Oh baby take me dancing
Our lord as a sigh
Ouh, I’m tied to thee, tied to thee
I’m who I’m supposed to be
Protect me, don’t tell the guards
Take me to the dance
Oh...take me there
Sweet lover of mine,
New York, nineties
I just probably, I - sit !
Not to me, I’ve been everywhere
Stronger than before
The lives of before are
Meant to be
I did ! oh yeah
Let me prove it by touching you baby
Oh, let’s meet again
I was surprised by the chord change
And she kept on walking
Like her crazy friends, bitch she was - oh yes she was not going to surrender It’s like ARGH !
maybe simpler is better, you know ?
Let me here take the credit baby
Oh defend me
Besides, I’m your first astral
Let me pay your demon the out
Let me pay out your demon number
Let me be with you
The things I get with you
Just take down to church
Nothing real good for you
Let’s take you on a ride
Why you make me feel emotions
You make me feel emotion
And I want to give emotion
Well, do you feel me now ?
Oh, do you feel me now ?
I think we’re in the mountain
I think loud as
The wind does think at night when it pours I know you want my body
I know you want my body
You make me one with mornin’
You make me like a child, girl
We’re meetin’ the morning
you make me unwilling to come back to the place Where I go
Oh, you make it just hard to really come right now
Oh, I say go
I you make me feel like ravin’, let’s be
And i forget to eat
The taste of her is something few forget about me
I believe you’re amazing babe,
First time I openly talk about it
And where, where did it go ?
And when did you decide to fuck about me ? Oh where did it go
that give them half what I give
They make it through the runnin’
I came to fuck pretty
I can thank you for the ride, babe
Sweet lover of infinity
Ah, we’ll keep on rising
thank you for the ride, baby
it’s been a long time...
Words, turns me into an animal
You know that I’m an animal
You know that I am an animal yeah
Word, somebody to an animal
We got to fuck hours
Are you aware of other faces down in the sky Marvin Gaye in my head poetry ever and then so many things I wish I could talk about no time to write I’m so stoned
I’m so stoned
Why did she take that car ?
Fushia dress, fushia
Ouh, babe I dream in colors
You make me think think feel things so rare
Let’s stop the room to like - it never stops !
Overture (feat. Mike Dean)
He’s been shining for ever, your son
He’s been shining for ever your son
He’s been shining
He’s been shining
He’s been shining for ever, ever your son
They search for the prince in the valley on his big horse
Search for a hero on the long course
But do they see me ?
Can I see me ?
He’s looking for a daughter in the field, alone
I wish I could give you the stars you asked me for
I wish I could open the sky doors
Open the sky doors
Take my sword
And save all the mothers and the daughters
Wounded by our kind
Take my sorrow
Take my gold
Who didn’t have time
I wish I could be a better man
By just becoming my angel
Just becoming my angel
from above
higher self speaking to me through the melody I
wish I could open the sky doors
I wish I could just take my sword
And welcome
My other
I wish I could forgive him for not seeing the truth
Seeing the truth - is it your blood ?
Why do you think I ache on my skin?
I’m afraid of disappearing into your skin
He’s been shining for ever your son !
I remember more than I’m supposed to
remember the time when your daughter was your son
And i wrote about my golden sword too
And i wrote about my lover’s eternal stare
Flowery days
When I die of love
I want to be settled down into a fiery crown
Into the flowery days
In silver satin ribbons
Lay my head apart into the flowery days
Cause I want you to stay
And I want you to love
All seeds will scatter ‘round
In yellow dusty sounds into the flowery days
Nothing eternal
All is well and done the trees are golden warm
And i wish you could stay into the flowery days
And i wish you could love into the flowery days
I met an angel (ft Madonna)
Open your heart my love,
open your heart
Open your heart, my love
open your heart
Accept to sit in there
Right next to me
Open your heart, my love,
Set myself free
I never thought I could
Just gemini
Open your heart, my love
don’t let it die
Accept to lose it all
and then relive
Set myself free
Need the angels to remind me…
BIG EYE: Do you suffer from loneliness ?
This is the voice of the big simulation.
Just let go of any pressure
in your body.
The terrestrial food
is of no importance now
Let me touch you angel…
Bismillah
I fell in love with an angel
She appeared
And there she tore up my whole word
Teaching me patience in a second
She’s teaching me patience
I fell in love with an angel
Elusive
And I am not hungry anymore
Teaching me longing over again
she’s teaching me longing
She’s in the trees, she’s in the sky
She’s in the singing stream
She’s in the cats’ and the dogs’ eyes
In the birds falling up from the trees
She’s on the hands of my best friend driving
She’s on the hands of the one taking care of me
I fell in love with the devil
Where is she
Where is she when I try to call
Teaching me waiting over feeding
She’s teaching me fear again
Oh, open your heart my love
Just try it once, my love
She’s in the singing stream
Eyes in the sky
open your heart
Release and sit in there
True love (ft. 070 Shake)
Do you know how it feels
To be inside it
But never talk about it
Do you know how it feels
I’m talking to you
I’m always talking to you
So you know how it feels
can’t believe you saw me crying
‘cause when I cry baby I cry for you
can’t believe you saw me dancing
‘cause when I dance baby I dance for you
Do you know how to love
I’ll show you
Oh, I’ll show you
So we know how to love
I need you to love me
I need you to love me
can’t believe you saw me dancing
when I dance baby I dance for you
Angel of light
Take me higher
Make me forget my mother
With your dark brown eyes staring at me
With your dark eyes staring at me
Angel of light : They’re making the blame
It still feels the same (right)
I’m doing the most
Hundred of those years crying
You said you wanted us soft besides you
Any word on me
many one pass through me
It’s so emotional
I think about it all the time
they’re begging on me
i pass on their lives
i wait on the floor
nothing making sense
i’m one on their knees
they begging me please (let me tell you som’thing)
holy seconds to most
trying to sit in your league
on a ride
With your dark eyes staring at me
Let me touch you once
Flexing hard
Flexing slow
See my abs
I’m your man
As i am,
Waiting for
Some hot sex
Oh forgive me, parles-tu français ?
Je ne me souviens plus de ce que je ai fait
De mes clefs je crois qu’elles étaient sur la table
veux-tu bien
On this table
Can you see this
It’s fantastic
I’m ecstatic
Si tu veux je switch en français ?
Qu’est-ce que tu veux que j’te dise en français ?
Vas-y, dis-moi ce que tu veux que j’te dise en français !
Just once, sweet angel of mine
Aimer, puis vivre
Il se dépêche de rentrer
Je comprends
J’ai pu aussi attendre à un moment
Je comprends ça
love without love
Further from mine
It’s alright, it’s the shine
Further from mine
It’s alright, it’s your shine
My soul and mind
It’s alright, it’s your shine
What is she doing ?
And what makes me a human
Oh is the shine
Of the wound that is open
of your eyes against mine
it’s alright, it’s the shine
Making them precious
About when they get love
And when they cry
See the good shine
It’s alright, it’s the shine
In all the land
Shine
I’m not pretty
things I did to forgive
and keep my heart open
And then follow a child
In the outer borders
No more of city lights
Looking for shine
No more of those sweet lies
Looking for shine
in all the land
it’s alright, it’s our shine
Don’t be mad, it’s my child
How many fake lights in the sky
are they going to punch with their fist ?
Don’t be mad, it’s our child
We have to be friends
Touch yourself
Boy, it’s all still there
Your mouth, your nose, your eyes, your elbows, your knees
Were supposed to go but it’s all still there
And you loved
boy, open wide
a sorrow crashed on the floor wasted again
But boy oh boy at least you tried
Don’t you say no to me again
Cause you know we have to be friends
Don’t you say no to me again
Cause we know you have to be friends
Boy it’s all there
It depends on you to look back and see for yourself
Boy, boy !
Aren’t you scared
And in love
you lose yourself
Like in this old movie where he’s gifted and blind
Don’t you think it’s just like yourself
Cause we know you have to be friends
Lick the light out (ft Madonna)
Descend a bit lower
Lower
Hm, and meet me there
Descend a bit faster
Faster
Oh, and fall a bit harder for me
There’s nothing you can’t do with me
you cannot be too deep with me
There nothing you can’t do with me
Prevent me from falling
By jumping in the skies above,
High, love
I’ll catch you
Oh why is the wind
When it blows
In my mind
Purging me from the sight of your glorious face
There’s nothing you can’t do with me, oh I’m honest
The burden on your chest, those feelings are golden
There’s nothing you can do with me to be scared of
I take the blood I take the tears I take all of
the things that unfold in my arms when you’re hurting
And you don’t know who else to turn to for the talking
Baby you can talk with me always
Baby you can talk with me always
BIG EYE : Where do you think I stand ?
I stand in your heart
just next to your lungs
you smoke too much
do you want to chase me away ?
I am dwelling in your sorry
raging
don’t deny
it’s useless
I’m here
breathing through your mouth
seeing with your heart
loving through your flesh
If an angel in power
decided just to see me
could I get that much higher ?
See me
If an angel in silence
decided just to free me
could I get that sweet power ?
Hear me
Feel me
I’m an angel in power
I decided to see you
As a human, a flower
I see you
I hear you
Give me your heart my darling, as it breaks, my baby
I see the cracks my darling, I’ll lick the light out
To be honest
I get lost in my thoughts, and for hours of time
and it’s making me feel
like I am not alone anymore
to be honest
I am trying to love, but I’m afraid to kill
And I never know when,
when to search or stay still
with you
Broken and yet tender
Always in and always out
Heading to the water
Drowning in what it can hide
Kind of always cautious
Don’t you don’t you break my heart
Feeling kind of loveless
Yet always ready to try
And I’ve been through so much
that sometimes it feels far
It is like a movie
played by another star
she’s a stranger
Now i’m sitting alone
and I’m trying to listen
To the stories that could
make mine a little softer, and fine
to be honest
Douce et abîmé
Toujours à côté
Dans l’eau s’enfoncer
Ne rien y trouver
Toujours protégé
Y a rien à casser
Feeling kind of loveless
J’ai rien à donner
J’ai tout à donner
away away…
I feel like an angel
Oh my lord, I feel like an angel
Oh my love
Floating above on the earth no longer
Oh my god
Searching for undying promises
Oh my god do I have the answer
Oh my lord I feel like an angel
And the woman in red
Said a part of me left with her
Told me to give her away
She’s a liar and a fool
Maybe she died this day
Just to take away the pain
So I don’t have to be warm and solid ever again
Floating above everytime he touches me
As he needs I dissociate
Oh my god do I have the answer
Oh my lord I feel like angel
I fucked him and then, he got rough
Satisfaction but it’s never enough
Would you lay down next to me and pray
It is good to try
You should just come to my bed
Earthy appetites are a thing
But don’t you tell me where you’re going and I’ll stay still
We should never tell each other now
What is good and what is ruined somehow
Oh my god I feel like an angel
Oh my love do I have the answer
My love is my light
My love is my light
My love is my undying eyes looking
Above your own eyes
My love is my soul
My love is the eyes that see
What you don’t know
My love is my power
My love is the eyes given everything
Forgive me brother
Forgive me for not seeing clearly
I was in them gone
My love it sees me
My love it sees everything I am
Everything you don’t see
Open your mind
and dive into the big eye
Open my mind
teach me ce que je ne sais pas
Open my mind and see the stream in the sky
Open my mind with your big big eye
Factor of skin drifting down
factor of skin
diving deep
Smell
Power of smells you smell baby
See from your eye see my past
I want it to last
When I fuck you know
Oh I touch you now
Recreate it now
Penetrate it now
My soul
Open it all
Oh, my word is my sword
My word is my sword
Recreate it all
And forgive it all
My eyes is my pride
It’s all dead inside
It’s all dead and then it is reborn in me
Endless memories
I see you from inside, my teacher
Master of love, my pride
I am now your mother
I’ll carry you to the other side
What did you see what did you see
Were you speaking ?
Were you saving me ?
What it is
Were you saving me from the dark?

The Men Behind the Music: Gabriels Releases Debut Album Angels and Queens Part 1
Inviting VMAN into his world, Gabriels singer Jacob Lusk talks grief and loss, and how they fueled the making of his trio’s first full-length album
- By Ava Manson
You’d never guess by his heavenly vocals, but Jacob Lusk wasn’t always a singer. One third of trio Gabriels —made up of Lusk, violinist-composer Ari Balouzian , and producer-keyboardist Ryan Hope —the Compton-born artist grew up practically banned from the stage. Raised in the church, the vocalist listened to gospel and jazz, sprinkled with legends Nat King Cole and Gladys Knight, but his own musical journey was one met with resistance. “I didn’t sing at church because I was terrible as a child,” he says, laughing. “They didn’t let me. Can you believe that?” For an artist whose early releases caught the eye of Elton John (not to mention the trio opens for Harry Styles’ Austin residency tour this week), we can’t say we do. Regardless, the singer now stands at the other side of a stunning transformation, fronting the raw, soulful tracks of Gabriels’ debut album, Angels and Queens Part 1 .
“A lot of times when you’re going through things, you feel like you’re the only one going through them,” says Lusk, whose recent hardships—combined with Balouzian and Hope’s—span from losing parents to grieving relationships. “[There’s] a realization that these things happen, but they don’t define us.” Angels and Queen Part 1 was derived from that pain, a fusion of fantasy and reality where the three could process a world in constant change.
It happens like this—in a room to themselves, the trio immerses themselves in someone’s story, real or imagined. Melody and lyrics evolving simultaneously, a common thread begins to form, somewhere between the group’s own experiences and other taboos of loss and abuse. Channeling thoughts into writing, an album is born (two, if we include Angels and Queens Part 2 releasing early next year). Overflowing with heart, chilling vocals, and some expertly played violin, this release is nothing if not glorious, and it isn’t one to miss.
Keep reading for more on our conversation with Jacob Lusk as he shares more on his musical journey, the formation of Gabriels, and the making of Angels and Queens Part 1 .
VMAN: Congratulations on the album, Angels and Queen Part 1 ! This is the start of such an exciting chapter for you guys. Let’s take it back to the early days of this project. What did that process look like for you?
JACOB LUSK: All of us have experienced a lot of loss during this process. Ryan lost his mother, I lost a few friends. Covid happened, went away, and came back. Then monkeypox. This is life, and life is crazy for everybody. A lot of our relationships changed. I think that’s everyone’s story, right? Friendships, relationships, family—everything’s a little different now, and we just started writing songs. That’s where it started and now we have this little baby that’s coming out in two parts. We ended up working with a guy named Sounwave who has produced Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce, and now us. It’s been a really exciting time and it came faster than we thought it was going to come. But the universe, the world, God, would have it this way. I’m excited.
VMAN: That’s definitely true. Do you think that the creative process felt like an escape from everything going on? A way to process it?
JL: It was a way to process, for sure. One of the songs that’s on Part 1 is about my god sister. We were in the middle of writing the album, trying to write before we went back to the UK, and I got the news that she had passed away. She had struggled with addiction, and “If You Only Knew” is actually about her. We wrote the song from the other side of loss. How as sad as it is, it can be freeing. Ryan’s mom, she had cancer, and she passed as well. I think we always have this fear of, “We lost them too soon, how are we going to move on?” And for them, maybe they’re at peace. Maybe they’re like, “Alright, baby, now you go and keep living and keep growing.” They wouldn’t want us to die, they would want us to keep going. That’s where that song came from.
VMAN: Sorry to hear that. Does every song have its own story behind it?
JL: Yes, all the songs have these amazing stories. Taboo is about a relationship. I won’t say who, but I got involved with somebody in the industry and it was not good. What me and the guys realized from it was that even though we’re very different, there are more things that make us alike. I’m this big, black, bigger than life character. Ryan’s this tattooed guy from Sunderland, who’s all intense. Ari wears sweaters and turtlenecks. He looks like Harrison Ford, or George W. Bush, whichever you prefer—We’re very different but we have these common ties. We all were experiencing loss during this time, even in relationships. Ari got into it with this chick, and it was like, “Oh, we’re all going through the same things.” So, these are my stories, and our stories. The reality is, these are situations that we’ve all been through. That’s really what the album is. All the songs are like that.
VMAN: That’s great, the way this message comes from all of you. When it comes to the writing process itself, how does that dynamic work between the three of you?
JL: Sometimes I’ll have an idea, or we’ll have a musical idea and it’ll start there. We do our best to wait until we get a room to ourselves, and we’ll put ourselves in the story of whatever happened. Once you get in the story, the song just comes, like with my god sister. Clearly that was a more direct thing, but some of them aren’t. There’s a song in the album called Mama, it’s the last song, and we wrote it after we found out Ryan’s mom had cancer. The song says, “Mama, don’t you cry, it’ll be alright”. Then it shifts to talking about a woman who is in an abusive relationship and can’t get out. She’s packed her bag; she’s bought a ticket. We literally put ourselves in the room, as I was singing and as we were writing it, exactly what the room looks like. The friend outside the window waiting for her to come down, but she never comes. If I think about my own personal life, I haven’t been in an abusive relationship that I couldn’t get out of, but I’ve been in other situations I thought I couldn’t get out of, or too scared to make a jump. I was too scared to quit my job and sign a record deal for Gabriels. Nobody knows that.
VMAN: So would you say that each song is a story that morphs from reality into these more abstract concepts?
JL: Exactly.
VMAN: That’s so special, how personal is it to you all but also relevant to your listeners. When it comes to Ryan and Ari, I heard you met years ago at an audition for them. Can you tell us that story? How did we get this trio out of what was once three strangers?
JL: It was for a choir actually, and I wasn’t going to do it because I thought I was hot shit at the time. My aunt convinced me, so I went, but I didn’t even sing. I just directed the choir. They booked the choir that went to Ari’s studio on the Westside to do an acapella session, and I didn’t go. But in true Ryan fashion—Ryan’s going to do whatever the fuck he wants—they show showed up that Sunday, two days later. When church was over, they set up a remote studio in the choir room, and were like, “Hi, we’re here to get you to sing.” I did the arrangement in 15 minutes, and I did all eight or nine parts: the soprano part, the tenor part, the bass part. They were like, “Who the fuck is this guy?” and we became friends. We started making music for fun, never thinking it would turn into this. We did a show for a club, then Covid happened. We were like, “Let’s just put out some music,” and Elton John got a hold of it.
VMAN: That’s amazing. When it comes to the actual sound, you have such a timeless, vintage, gospel feel. Do you have musical inspiration for this album in particular?
JL: Here’s what I say, I say if Nina Simone made a pop record in 2052. A lot of people think we’re trying to capture the old sound and we aren’t necessarily. Ari just plays the viola so we’re gonna have strings. I grew up in church, that’s why you hear a little gospel, but I was doing R&B and jazz. And of late, I’ve been singing with orchestras. My vibe is very different. I’m a huge Tina Turner fan and I also love Beyonce. I stan Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, I stan a lot of people. There’s a mixture of those things. Getting my start in the industry I was actually a hype man for a female rapper, and then I worked with Nate Dogg. I did that full time. It’s a culmination of our experiences more than it’s us trying to make it old school. When we decided we’re going to make the best music we possibly can, that’s what came out.
VMAN: Do you find yourself reaching for inspiration from your childhood experience with music in the church or other early musical exposure?
JL: Here’s the thing, I didn’t sing at church because I wasn’t very good. I was terrible as a child. You can ask the people; I was not good. They didn’t let me sing, can you believe that? My first inspirations were gems, they were Nat King Cole and Nina and Gladys Knight. Those were my first inspirations. Then when I got to college, my mom was like, “The singing shit, you’re not doing that. You’re gonna take your ass to school.” I think I was in a chamber group my last year or two of high school and then I started doing classical music. For me it always had to be logical: “If I go to school, I get a degree, I can be an opera singer.”
VMAN: If you weren’t singing early back then, what do you think you as a kid would think of what you’re doing now?
JL: Now here’s what’s interesting, my kindergarten teacher who my mom is friends with said that when I was younger, I used to say I wanted to be a singer and they would tell me that I couldn’t. I would lay out in the floor and kick and scream. I don’t remember that ever happening, all I knew was I was going to be an OBGYN. I was going to bring babies into the world, that was my thing. I think if I saw myself I’d would be like, “What are you doing? Good luck with that.” I would give myself a very hard time. “That’s the best you could come up with? No education, 30, and a college dropout?” I would have been a total prick.
VMAN: That’s surprising! Do you think the creativity of making music is what’s changed you so much since then?
JL: Yes, I think making music is the most authentic I’ve ever been. As a person, as a performer, musically. Now, if I think it, I do it. It’s been freeing.
VMAN: That’s amazing. Moving back to the album, of course Angels and Queens Part 1 leaves us waiting for Angels and Queens Part 2 . What about this project made it feel more fit to be a multi-parter? Why not release it all in one?
JL: A couple reasons. First, people were waiting for music, and I got tired of making them wait. We’re also singing a lot of these songs live, so if we’re singing these songs then people need to be able to find it. This is what felt like the right middle ground. The second part is even more wild and fun, and it just felt right. Our shows have become these theatrical things. Our last headline show, I started in one of the balconies with an orange jumpsuit and shackles, and it just felt like the right thing for this progression. But mostly for me, I got tired of keeping people waiting. It was like, “This is what my first album is and I’m not taking no for an answer.”
VMAN: Are the themes in Part 2 the same as Part 1? How would you say the two relate to each other?
JL: It’s an evolution. Part 1 is this experience, and part two is a continuation of that experience. There are these taboo things happening in Part 1. My god sister died, the mother is going through everything—all of these bad things are happening. Part 2 is a realization that these things happen, but they don’t define us. One song’s line is, “I might be down right now. But I make do with what I got”.
VMAN: That’s beautiful, does that feel like a message directed to both yourself and to the listeners?
JL: Yes. A lot of times when you’re going through things, you feel like you’re the only one going through them. Eventually, you realize everybody’s going through it too. It makes me go, “Okay, we’re all dealing with shit. Don’t be so hard on yourself, be kinder to yourself.” Where “Angels and Queens” came from, the song is one thing. The song is about a black supermodel whose name will remain nameless, and it comes from a realization of seeing these people in positions of power and authority, and they’re losing their shit. They’re way out of line and way out of their mind. A lot of them are crying out for help. It’s a realization that she just needs help, and I need help too. “Angels and Queens” came from the idea that all of us are angels and queens. You also can be an angel to the person next door to you, to your neighbor, to the girl down the street. And you are a queen, you have reign over your domain. This is your world; you can be who and what you want to be. You really can. I know that’s a whole lot of messages, but the bottom line of it is: There’s more things that make us alike than make us different. We’re all on the same level.
VMAN: That’s great. Alright, last question for you. Is there anything else you want to share about what’s next for Gabriels, or any other messages you want to share with your listeners?
JL: Part 1 is out September 30 and Part 2 comes out in March. I want to thank our listeners for all the support and for coming to see us live. And just—keep going. Life is really hard, it is. And I feel like it’s gotten harder. I want people to stop being so hard on themselves. You’re doing a great job, you really are. Just keep going, you have everything you need inside of you to make it. You have the power to make your world whatever you want it to be. You can be the angel and the queen in your life.

Gabriels: Angels & Queens – album review
Released 7th July 2023
Buy from Sister Ray
The world’s most exhilarating band return with the complete version of their Angels & Queens debut. The additional six tracks take an already outstanding album to a whole different level. Louder Than War’s Gordon Rutherford reviews.
Okay, I have beef and it’s important that I get it off my chest before getting round to the content of this record. I’m not even sure who to point the finger at; whether it’s the label or management. The band themselves seem like wholesome lads and I can’t imagine that they are behind this. Let me explain. Presumably like many others, I guessed that the eagerly anticipated second part of Angels & Queens would be a collection of different tunes from Part One. Now the project is complete, and we are able to feast upon this second half of presumed brilliance. And we do. We are able to celebrate six wonderful new tracks. The problem is that they are presented alongside the seven already sold to us in Part One. You know, the Part One that punters shelled out good money for just last September? Surely, it would have made more sense – and been fairer in these straitened times – for the record company to keep their powder dry until this complete release.
Rant over. Let’s just say that if a band is going to be involved in something like that, they better ensure that the content makes up for it. Fortunately, Gabriels deliver. It’s rare that an album receives the coveted Louder Than War Five Bombs accolade, but that’s what I awarded to Angels & Queens (Part One) in my review of it. I suppose chucking another six tracks, possible fillers, into the mix potentially jeopardises that rating. Rest easy. These additional songs are equally as strong, if not even stronger, as the Part One content.
If you want a detailed commentary on the ‘original’ seven Part One songs, you can find it in my review from last September. It’s not as though my opinions have changed in the interim period. As a synopsis: the title track remains a masterpiece in timing and pacing, Taboo sounds every bit as dramatic as it did last September and To The Moon And Back is just as heart-wrenchingly sumptuous as before. Now, to those ‘new’ tracks.
Part One was opened spectacularly by the title track, but in an interesting scheduling development, Angels & Queens (the song) is pushed down the running order to position three. Instead, this particular iteration is ushered in by the thrilling R&B of Offering. Driven by a vintage-sounding, gorgeously fluid upright bass, it flies out of the blocks like peak Usain Bolt. Fast forward to the album’s stunning mid-point. We Will Remember is an ambitious re-working of the classic Lloyd Webber showtune, Memory. When you decide to tackle a tune made famous by both Elaine Paige and Barbra Streisand you better be confident in your ability to carry it off. Incredibly, Gabriels make it entirely their own by backing Jacob Lusk’s dramatic vocal with a glitchy breakbeat. This fragments and then morphs into a more conventional delivery, providing an outstanding vehicle for that astonishing voice.
The voice. You may be surprised that I have taken so long to get here, given that it is probably the thing that the band are best known for, even more so after Lusk’s triumphant appearance in Elton John’s very recent Glastonbury set. However, Gabriels are no one-trick pony and the contribution of the other two band members is just as integral as that of the frontman. A singer needs songs, after all. The music, composed by producer/violinist Ari Balouzian and Sunderland-born film director, Ryan Hope, is the perfect vehicle for Lusk’s voice and the intelligent and innovative way in which they re-work, then append their own composition, in We Will Remember is the perfect example.
Changing tempo, burning adrenalin like rocket fuel, the Hi NRG of Glory utterly thrills. It’s the closest thing you will hear to Sylvester’s classic You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real). Following that, there is the promise of a ballad that tricks us by subsequently blossoming into something huge and pulsating. Great Wind is like Glory’s more unpredictable twin sister. On steroids. Effortlessly, purposefully, it billows through phases, from introverted and thoughtful to high octane disco.
Which leaves two new songs to discuss. Although, they are not quite new. As well as being Gabriels’ most recognised song, Love And Hate In A Different Time is a song for the ages. All of them. The original version sounded like something laid down on wax cylinder in a two-bit studio in the nineteen-thirties, whilst simultaneously sounding utterly contemporaneous of today. This version is slicker, more produced, and, as a consequence it loses some of its sheer ingenious novelty. It also misses those off-kilter triple-claps that totally screw with your mind and that is a little bit of a shame. Still, it is an astounding song, one that continues to absolutely thrill, even in this guise, two years after its original release.
Watch the video accompanying this piece. After the core song is over, it cuts to footage shot from a mobile phone. A young man, unknown at the time, is singing Billie Holliday’s Strange Fruit into a megaphone. He is unaccompanied; it is a spontaneous acapella performance. Delivering with such intensity and majesty and beauty he has drawn a massive crowd to the intersection of Sunset and Boulevard in his hometown of Los Angeles. The singer, of course, is pre-Gabriels Lusk and what is fascinating about the footage today is that the performance is semi-reprised on the album’s sixth new (not quite new) track, Professional. This breathtaking track, which initially appeared on the Love And Hate In A Different Time EP, sees Lusk initially accompanied by Balouzian’s mournful strings, followed by a delicately picked piano. Strikingly, the influence of Strange Fruit pervades the performance, both stylistically and emotionally. Just like Lady Day, Lusk’s voice sends shivers down the spine.
Now fully beefed-up, this version of Angels & Queens is as good as popular music gets. Fortunately for all involved, it is a collection of such sublime and unrivalled quality that I am able to find forgiveness in my heart for their ‘two-part’ marketing misstep. However, I started with a gripe and I’m going to close with another. Assuming Angels & Queens is truly now complete, and it sure sounds like it, it should have found room for another of the band’s classic singles, Blame. Had that been present then Louder Than War’s designers would have been looking for a new bombs design – one with many more than five.

Christine and the Queens Announces New Album PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE, Shares “To be honest”: Stream
The new LP's collaborators include Madonna, Mike Dean, and 070 Shake
Christine and the Queens has revealed the first details for his latest album, PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE , which will arrive on June 9th via Because Music. The announcement was paired with the lead single from the French pop singer-songwriter’s fourth LP, “To be honest.”
PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE was primarily written and performed by Christine and the Queens, who co-produced the album with Mike Dean following their collaboration on 2022’s Redcar les adorables étoiles . Beyond that, the singer has stepped up his star-powered support with guest features from Madonna (on two tracks!) and previous duet partner 070 Shake.
In a statement, Chris shared that the project serves as the “second part of an operatic gesture” that began with Redcar , with both taking inspiration from Tony Kushner’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Angels in America . His two latest albums mirror the two-part stage production with the “colourful and absurd” predecessor representing the “insane dream-space” for Angels ’ ailing gay protagonist, Prior, while “ PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE is a key towards heart-opening transformation, a prayer towards the self” similar to the character’s “deep, painful becoming.”
News of the new LP came with the project’s first single, “To be honest.” Full of the singer’s signature synthy splendor, the track was accompanied by a self-directed music video. Watch it below.
Chris will support the new album with a stretch of 2023 tour dates starting in San Francisco on March 13th. The trek hits San Diego, Los Angeles, and more before jetting to South America and Europe this summer. The singer also been tapped for festival appearances throughout the year including the UK’s BBC Radio 6 Music Festival in late March, Coachella in April, Glastonbury in June, and more. Tickets to the US shows are available via Stubhub , and tickets to the international dates are available via Viagogo .
Christine and the Queens’ PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE will be released on June 9th via Because Music. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Christine and the Queens Expand U.S. Tour Dates
By Kory Grow
Christine and the Queens has expanded his U.S. tour plans to include more California dates this spring. The artist, who also goes by Chris and performs in character as “Redcar,” will now perform in San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles around his previously announced Coachella appearances. Tickets for the new dates will be available on the artist’s website at noon PST on Friday.
The performances come a few months after the release of Redcar Les Adorables Étoiles (Prologue) , an album he says sets up more music that will come out this year. Redcar’s music was more sprawling and just as dramatic as previous Christine and the Queens releases, which has allowed Chris to stage some surprising performance art spectacles. Last year, even after he injured his leg, he managed to adapt the album’s “La Chanson du Chevalier” into a special presentation in which he danced around Rodin’s L’Age d’Airain sculpture. He also has staged full-scale concerts in Paris and London.

In a recent interview with El Planeta Del Rock , ASKING ALEXANDRIA bassist Sam Bettley was asked about the departure of the band's founding guitarist Ben Bruce . He said: "Here's the thing: we're all brothers, and we've been brothers since, it's been 15 years now. And when we started doing this, obviously we were all young and we were kids, really. And throughout the years, we've all got families. We've all got kids. I've got two boys — four and about to be two — and he's got a family and he's got kids. And if there's one thing that we always said, it was always put family first. And if you're feeling there's certain things and reasons that I don't wanna go into — it's not my place to go into — but it's just a no-brainer. He's staying home just to be with his family for a bit, and we still speak to him all the time, and he's still like just as much of a brother to all of us, and it's just not as big of a deal to us, because we've kind of known about his feelings of this for a while. We've done a few tours without Ben , actually, recently too, because of these reasons of him needing to be at home with his family. So to us, it's gonna be definitely weird and different to be on stage without Ben , for sure, but I will be definitely speaking to him and seeing him just as much as I ever did. There's no bad blood there. We all have families, so for us to put ourselves in his shoes and he's our brother, we get it. And much love and respect there."
Bruce formed ASKING ALEXANDRIA in 2006 and has played on all of the British band's eight studio albums, including ASKING ALEXANDRIA 's latest full-length release, 2023's "Where Do We Go From Here?" A new ASKING ALEXANDRIA EP, "Dark Void" , arrived in January.
In a message posted on Instagram on January 19, the guitarist thanked the ASKING ALEXANDRIA fans for their "years of love and support" before explaining that "it's time to dedicate my life to my family. On top of family medical situations, leaving my children means missing out on too many important moments in their lives."
Bruce had been the lead guitarist, backing vocalist and primary songwriter of ASKING ALEXANDRIA since the band's inception nearly two decades ago.

Angel cabrera granted a visa, set to return to u.s. with plan to play pga tour champions, share this article.
Argentina’s Angel Cabrera’s comeback is officially ready for takeoff as the two-time major winner secured a visa last week.
Charlie Epps, his longtime coach, confidante and friend, confirmed that Cabrera can now travel to the U.S. – and plans to move permanently to Houston – and resume competing on PGA Tour Champions.
Cabrera, 54, served 30 months in prison in Brazil and Argentina for domestic violence and other lesser charges. His visa expired in January and according to Epps, the American Embassy in Buenos Aires made him take a series of psychological tests.
“That was the delay,” Epps said. It prevented him from competing in April in the Masters, where he is eligible as the 2009 champion, but it should pave the way for his return next year.
“Angel certainly is one of our great champions,” Masters chairman Fred Ridley said at a press conference in January. “As we all know, he has been unable to participate in the Masters the last couple of years due to legal issues. Presently we have been in constant contact with Angel’s representatives. He presently is not able to enter the United States. He doesn’t have a visa, and I know that that process is being worked through. We certainly wish him the best of luck with that, and we’ll definitely welcome him back if he’s able to straighten out those legal issues.”
Cabrera has made a few starts here and there since his release from jail but can now begin a full comeback in earnest. Cabrera was reinstated on the PGA Champions Tour and the PGA Tour in December last year. He played in the Trophy Hassan II, a Champions Tour event in Morocco in February, and finished T-27. He missed the cut at the Argentine Open, a Korn Ferry Tour-sanctioned event, in March. Most recently in May, he played in Barbados in a Legends Tour event, formerly known as the European Seniors Tour, and finished T-11. His last competitive tournament in the U.S. was at the Pure Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach in September 2020.
More: After parole from jail, Angel Cabrera dreams of a comeback on PGA Tour Champions — but will he be given a chance?
As a past winner on the PGA Tour, Cabrera is a PGA Tour Champions member, but his entry into a field is dependent upon how the field is filled, according to a spokesperson for PGA Tour Champions. As a major championship winner, he is eligible for both restricted and unrestricted sponsor exemptions, and there is no limit to the number of sponsor exemptions he can receive. He also is exempt to compete in an event qualifier as a past champion on the PGA Tour. An email to his longtime manager Manuel Tagle asking for Cabrera’s future plans wasn’t returned.
Cabrera is entered into the next two senior events, American Family Insurance Championship and Dick’s Open. He’s currently on the alternate list for both. Anything past that would be too far to forecast for player commitments.
“When I talked to him down there, he had really grown up, he understood what life is all about and that he had really made an ass of himself,” Epps said in a phone interview. “He’s dedicated to golf and he wants to come back. He just needs to get comfortable again playing in competition. I want him to win the U.S. Senior Open.”
Like the Masters, that quest will have to wait until next year. The deadline for entry into the U.S. Senior Open was May 1 at 5 p.m. ET and Cabrera failed to file for entry.

Blue Angels Annapolis Schedule: When, Where To Watch 2024 Air Show
ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Blue Angels return to Annapolis later this month to fly in the U.S. Naval Academy Air Show .
Marylanders will have three chances to see the elite squadron of Navy fighter jets during the Naval Academy's Commissioning Week.
The Blue Angels run to both extremes. The Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets fly as fast as 700 mph and as slow as 120 mph during the demonstration. They can reach altitudes as high as 15,000 feet or as low as 50 feet. The jets sometimes are only 18 inches apart.
The Blue Angels arrive Tuesday, May 21. They will circle the city from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Their flight rehearsal, which is similar to their full demonstration, is at 2 p.m. over the Severn River.
The full flight demonstration is Wednesday, May 22 at 2 p.m. over the Severn River.
Commissioning Ceremony Flyover
The Blue Angels will also fly over the Midshipmen's commissioning , or graduation, ceremony on Friday, May 24. Residents can catch a glimpse of the flyover at 10:04 a.m., but the commissioning ceremony at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is closed to the public.
Commissioning Week runs from Friday, May 17 through Saturday, May 25.
More information on Commissioning Week is posted at usna.edu/commissioningweek . To learn more about the Blue Angels, visit blueangels.navy.mil .
Where To Watch
A popular place to watch is Hospital Point on the Naval Academy campus, known as the yard.
Many visitors also watch from Ego Alley or the Spa Creek Bridge sidewalks in downtown Annapolis.
The Severn River and Spa Creek have clear vantage points for boaters, but the maritime restrictions posted below will be in effect.
The Anne Arundel County Public Library is hosting a free Wednesday, May 22 watch party at the Westfield Annapolis mall atop the green parking garage.
Capital SUP has paddleboard and kayak tours during the practice and full demonstration days.
The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park has a boat cruise with lunch and drinks for the full demonstration day.
Charter boats are available through Island Chill Yacht Charters and Ben and Fritz Charters among other places.
Where To Park, Anchor
The City of Annapolis posted the parking and boating information below:
PARKING: The best option for getting onto the yard is to park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and take the free shuttle to enter through the Visitor Center at Gate One. For those coming downtown for Blue Angels rehearsal and/or flight demonstration, City garages are the best bet and include Hillman (150 Gorman Street), Gott’s (45 Calvert Street), Knighton (1A Colonial Ave.), and Park Place (One Park Place).
HEAVY TRAFFIC: Make a plan to accommodate the increase in cars and pedestrian traffic as much as possible. Allow yourself plenty of extra time and please be courteous to out-of-town drivers who are unfamiliar with City streets. Download the “Prepare Me Annapolis” mobile app (Apple/Android) to receive local traffic alerts.
On Friday, May 24, security around Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Rowe Blvd. could make traffic slower than usual until approximately 3 p.m.
TEMPORARY ROAD AND BRIDGE CLOSURES: On Tuesday, May 21, the Route 450 (Naval Academy) bridge will be closed between 10:45 a.m. and approximately 3:45 p.m. for the Blue Angels rehearsal. The bridge will close again on Wednesday, May 22 at approximately 1:45 p.m. until approximately 4 p.m. for the Blue Angels flight demonstration.
DOWNTOWN PARKING LIMITATIONS: Expect parking to be limited throughout the week. Visit www.AnnapolisParking.com to reserve garage parking at Gott’s and Knighton garages. Please note that there will be strict enforcement of metered parking, two-hour limited spaces, Residential Permit Zones and red zones. Visitors are strongly encouraged to park at Knighton (Corner of Colonial Avenue and West Street) and Park Place (Just off of West Street and Spa Road) garages and take the free downtown “magenta” shuttle. The shuttle can be tracked using the transloc app or on the web: https://accessannapolis.transloc.com/routes .
On Friday, May 24, 2024, there will be no state employee parking at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Lot. The parking lot will be reserved for graduation attendees. City and state employees who normally park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium should relocate to the Calvert Street Garage.
INCREASED SECURITY: All residents and visitors should remain aware of their surroundings. Please identify suspicious personnel, packages, or behavior to local authorities. If you see something, say something. Dial 9-1-1 for emergency response. For non-emergency inquiries or questions, contact the Annapolis Call Center at 410-260-2211.
MARITIME TRAFFIC: Boaters must pay close attention to markers that delineate exclusionary zones and temporary channels (marked by red and green buoys) on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Please look for public safety boats and follow instructions promptly. The Annapolis Harbormaster operates on VHF 17. The area of Spa Creek and the Severn River will be patrolled by the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources Police, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Annapolis Harbormaster, Annapolis Police and Annapolis Fire Rescue boats. For complete information on maritime traffic rules and procedures, visit: the Annapolis Harbormaster’s web page on maritime rules for Blue Angels .

After a successful weekend in San Diego, the Yankees turn slightly north to Anaheim for a trio of games with the Angels. LAA is in the doghouse of the AL West, and this does feel like a little bit of a trap series, even with how well New York’s been playing. Nestor Cortes will be tasked with preventing that kind of a disappointing turn, and he does seem well-equipped to do just that.
Nestor hasn’t allowed an earned run since May 11th against the Rays, rattling off 12 consecutive innings in the process (just one unearned runner crossing the plate). He’s lowered his walk rate to the best mark of his career, and while his 3.29 ERA is the highest in the current rotation, that says more about how strong the Yankees’ starters have been in the season’s first two months.
Griffin Canning goes for the Angels, having a bit of a nightmare season through his first 10 starts. A 5.05 ERA and 5.40 FIP while his strikeout rate has absolutely cratered should make the Yankee lineup lick their chops, and coming off a luck-filled start against the Astros where he walked more batters than he struck out is indicative of how his line should probably be a little worse.
DJ LeMahieu makes his season debut tonight, after being activated off the IL . The two-time batting champion is at third and hitting ninth in an otherwise familiar batting order. The club also gets Ian Hamilton back from the COVID-19 IL.
