Britain has a wealth of interesting places and venues for a school trip focused on art and design and it is a great way to explore the importance of how our world has been created and forged throughout pre-history by art and design.

Exploring some of the many galleries, museums and sculpture parks combined with workshops run by contemporary artists will bring learning outside the classroom to life for your students and widen their knowledge and understanding about the history of art and design.

The United Kingdom has produced many of the world’s top artists and architects. Enjoy a welcome dinner of traditional British food , such as fish and chips, and listen to a trip briefing .

Day 2: High Art & A Live Auction

Head to the iconic Trafalgar Square and explore the National Portrait Gallery , one of the most fascinating but often overlooked galleries in London. Get to know 200,000 famous people via their portraits, including all the British Royals (present and past).

You’ve spent the morning looking at high art, now it’s time to plunge down into The Vaults, London’s home for alternative arts, set in a maze of disused railway arches under Waterloo Station.  In this creative, imaginative environment, roll up your sleeves and take a life drawing class. This lesson is designed to develop style and skill, whatever your ability.

Day 3: University Life

Meet a Student Ambassador from Chelsea College, one of the best a rts universities in London. Ask them about  Masters and PhDs and compare university life in London with student life back home. Then, listen to a talk from a young professional working in the London arts industry. They’ll tell you about their experiences, the challenges and benefits of the job and what skills are needed to thrive in the sector. You’ll also have the chance to engage in a Q&A with the speaker.

Stop off at the Tate Britain . This world-renowned museum is home to traditional British paintings and sculptures across a range of styles starting from the 14 th century, including works by Sir John Everett Millais, John William Waterhouse and John Constable.

Come back to the present as you stroll with your guide through London’s West End , the area in Central London where the city lights never go out.

Day 4: Street Art

Today, you’re discovering East London’s vibey street art scene . London boasts one of the biggest collections of uncommissioned street art in the world, including those of the anonymous Banksy . Learn about this ever-evolving art scene, its motives and challenges, and see how street art can help transform a disused space in the Nomadic Community Gardens , once a place of urban decay and now a home to a vibrant community of artists. One of them will even deliver a workshop where you can try your hand at producing your own street art (don’t wear fancy clothes for this one)!

Afternoon / Evening

Continue your journey through the world of contemporary art and explore the Tate Modern , home to works by Warhol and Picasso among other artists from all over the world.

Day 5: Galleries

Take the morning to relax in Hyde Park , one of the biggest and most beautiful parks in London where the famous Serpentine Galleries are also located. Watch a debate or try public speaking at its famous Speakers’ Corner, visit the Lady Di garden memorial, feed the birds and enjoy an hour of immersive team games.

Take part in a curated workshop on gallery education practice , looking at the roles of the learning team, co-ordination between gallery departments and how funding happens. Develop your own project plans based on the needs of different stakeholders and role-play the professional, meeting challenges and learning new skills while unpicking a real scenario.

Go up 20 Fenchurch Street, a skyscraper nicknamed “The Walkie Talkie” for its distinctive shape, and visit Sky Garden . Wander around the landscaped gardens and the observation deck for panoramic views from London’s highest public garden.

Day 6: Graphic Design

See if your portrait sculpture skills are up to it and meet a sculptor who has worked extensively in the film industry. Learn about the process of ecorché (sculpting each individual muscle onto the skeleton) and go home with an anatomic muscle model – a much better souvenir than an ‘I Love London’ t-shirt or keychain!

Explore the Museum of Brands and take part in a curated workshop on graphic design . Learn about how packaging graphics have changed over the years, as well as how art and design are used to communicate key messages to the consumer.   Then, work in groups to try to improve the graphics of a current UK product.

Spend your evening in one of the many London museums that stay open until late, like the Victoria & Albert Museum or the National Gallery.

Day 7: Farewell, London!

Enjoy a last full English breakfast while taking part in a reflection session and listening to a trip debriefing . It might be home time, but it’s not over. London’s art will follow you back to the classroom…and beyond!

Learning Objective

Inspirational places for students

Looking for places and ways in which you can inspire your art and design students? There are countless ways to learn about art beyond the classroom and enhance learning experiences within the subject.

Teaching art and design in a classroom environment has its limitations. Books and modern digital devices are great, but if you want to really inspire your art class, taking them to see works of art first hand is a must.

UK Art Trips

Here in the UK we can motivate your group with everything from medieval textile art at Warwick Castle to modern design classics such as Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower. Helping to enhance their critical thinking and develop knowledge around the subject, the art & design day trips we feature can support your study of artists, architects and designers and the skills and processes they employ.

Overseas Art & Design Trips

For older students wishing to travel on an extended art trip, we have an exciting range of tailor made art and design tours. Whether you fancy an architecture trip to Russia, a historical art and design trip to Amsterdam or a far flung voyage to Japan for a once in a lifetime chance to study the arts of the Far East.

Politics live: Rishi Sunak accused of 'gaslighting' UK on economy; Scotland's new first minister to be confirmed

The government is "gaslighting" the public about the state of the economy, the shadow chancellor will say on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the SNP has named John Swinney as its new leader to replace Humza Yousaf.

  • Live reporting by Faith Ridler

Iain Duncan Smith, the former leader of the Conservative Party, has urged the government to admit that "China poses a systematic threat to the UK".

In a statement from Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, MPs will be told today of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel.

The government will not name the country involved, but Sky News understands this to be China.

Responding to this news, the former minister said: "This is yet another example of why the UK government must admit that China poses a systemic threat to the UK and change the integrated review to reflect that.

"No more pretence, China is a malign actor, supporting Russia with money and military equipment, working with Iran and North Korea in a new axis of totalitarian states."

Mel Stride, the work and pensions secretary, has said the Ministry of Defence acted "very swiftly" in the face of a data breach Sky News understands was made by China.

MPs will be told today of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel.

Asked about this, Mr Stride says: "We will know that when Grant Shapps the defence secretary makes a statement to parliament later on this afternoon.

"What I can tell you is the MoD has acted very swiftly to take this data base offline, it's a third-party data base and certainly not one run directly by the MoD.

"And of course they are there to advise and provide support to those who may be concerned about the fact that this data has been breached."

Asked if it is concerning, Mr Stride reiterates that the targeted data was not "an MoD data base as such, it was a third party".

"But nonetheless that's still a very significant matter and Grant Shapps will be addressing that in parliament this afternoon."

He adds: "We take cyber security extremely seriously."

However, he refuses to comment further ahead of Mr Shapps' statement.

Asked if China is a threat, Mr Stride says the UK has recognised "that China is an epoch-defining challenge".

Pressed if they are an enemy, the minister says they are "most definitely a challenge", and it is important to find a "balance" and make sure "we are sensible in terms of protecting ourselves".

We've just been hearing from our deputy political editor Sam Coates , who last night broke the news that it is understood the Chinese state has hacked the Ministry of Defence.

He said: "This is understood to be the Chinese state, possibly working through a contractor, targeting the payroll systems of the Ministry of Defence.

"They are the payroll systems used by serving members of the Armed Forces and some veterans.

"The details that were potentially compromised were bank details, names and in some cases - although they're trying to downplay this - addresses.

"I think there has been an enormous effort since this was discovered at the back end of last week to try and work out exactly what's happened.

"They're not sure how much data if any the Chinese were able to get hold of.

"There is going to be a big effort to reassure people - reassure veterans and serving personnel today - that they will be paid, even though this system is separate from the MoD.

"But I think there is enormous nervousness at once again systems being compromised. We saw the Electoral Commission being talked about a couple of months ago by the deputy prime minister.

"I think it's very significant, it's information about serving personnel."

By Jenness Mitchell , Scotland reporter

New SNP leader John Swinney has promised a "new chapter" as he admitted his party has been through a "rough time recently".

Mr Swinney has replaced Humza Yousaf and could become Scotland's seventh first minister as early as Tuesday.

The SNP leadership nominations closed at 12pm on Monday, with the party confirming Mr Swinney was the sole nominee.

Mr Swinney, who was SNP leader between 2000 and 2004, said he was "deeply honoured" to take on the role and his appointment was "the beginning of a new chapter" for the party.

While he said the SNP has "faced a rough time recently as a party", he insisted: "Now, I know there's some controversy that I'm the only candidate to stand for the leadership.

You can read more from Sky News below:

The government is "gaslighting" the public about the state of the economy, the shadow chancellor will say on Tuesday.

Rachel Reeves is set to attack the Conservatives in a speech in the City of London, as the opposition takes the fight to the government on their own turf ahead of the general election.

Running a strong economy has long been the focus of Conservative election campaigns.

And with a raft of economic data coming out this week, Ms Reeves will be looking to get ahead of the government's messaging - saying Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claiming the economy is improving is "deluded".

The Bank of England will on Thursday make its latest decision on interest rates, with expectations that borrowing costs will be held at 5.25%.

By Sam Coates , deputy political editor

The Chinese state has hacked the Ministry of Defence, Sky News understands.

The Chinese state is to be accused of two or three attempts at hacking MoD employees - including personnel.

The cyberattack was on a payroll system with current service personnel and some veterans. It is largely names and bank details that have been exposed. All salaries will be paid this month.

Tobias Ellwood, a Conservative MP and former soldier, told Sky News that China "was probably looking at the financially vulnerable with a view that they may be coerced in exchange for cash".

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps is expected to make a statement to the Commons today, with the BBC reporting he will set out a "multi-point plan" which will include action to protect affected service men and women.

Good morning!

Welcome back to the Politics Hub  on Tuesday, 7 May.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Fallout will likely continue after Sky News learned that the Chinese state hacked the Ministry of Defence ;
  • MPs will be told today of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel;
  • We're expecting the Liberal Democrats to table a motion of no confidence in the government today, in a bid to force Rishi Sunak to call a general election for June;
  • This is in the wake of damaging local election results for the Conservatives, who lost 474 council seats and a key mayoral position in the West Midlands;
  • We will see Rishi Sunak out and about in London today, as the Tories attempt to put a positive spin on these election results;
  • Also today, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves is delivering a speech in the City of London. She will accuse Mr Sunak and Jeremy Hunt of "gaslighting" the British people about the state of the economy;
  • And John Swinney is due to be confirmed as Scotland's first minister after a vote today. He was confirmed as SNP leader on Monday, with no opposition.

We'll be discussing all of this and more with:

  • Work and pensions secretary Mel Stride at 7.20am;
  • Labour's Darren Jones at 8.15am.

Follow along for all the latest news and analysis throughout today.

Despite it being a bank holiday, the Politics Hub has kept on trucking today with more fallout from last week's local elections and the SNP naming its new leader.

Here's what you need to know to catch up:

  • John Swinney was named the new leader of the SNP and vowed to unify both the party and Scotland, while still making the case for independence ;
  • Rishi Sunak insisted the general election is "not a foregone conclusion" despite a bruising set of local results for the Tories ;
  • But Labour accused the prime minister of "hiding from voters" by not setting the date for a national vote ;
  • Documents seen by Sky News revealed the government considered using Iraq for a Rwanda-style deportation scheme ;
  • Keir Starmer warned Israel against a seemingly imminent military offensive in the Gazan city of Rafah .

Good night - we'll be back tomorrow.

Rishi Sunak's internal critics have abandoned their attempt to unseat him because they have run out of time and do not believe Penny Mordaunt would do what is necessary to save the party.

The Politics At Jack And Sam's podcast discusses how the PM is unlikely to face a challenge but will be confronted by an exhausted, sceptical and in parts broken Tory party when parliament returns tomorrow.

He faces legislative challenges in the coming weeks, with revolts on the criminal justice bill and sentencing bill, that could be aggravated by the party's poor performance.

But efforts by plotters to oust Mr Sunak have been abandoned.

Read more - and listen to the podcast - below:

Train drivers begin a fresh wave of strikes tomorrow.

They are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from tomorrow to Thursday.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime until Saturday.
