From Janet Zuccarini, chef Stuart Cameron and the Gusto 54 team comes a new marketplace and restaurant nestled on the always-popular Ossington strip and offering authentic, unique and mouthwatering Middle Eastern fare.

Azhar, which officially opened at the start of the year, is located at 96 Ossington Avenue and is hard to miss with a display window full of tempting pastries inviting passersby to drop in for a coffee or a snack. Part restaurant and part marketplace, the menu is focused around the use of traditional ingredients and techniques and a wood-fired oven at the back of the space where the bread and many of the main dishes are baked.

Upon entering, guests are welcomed into the retail space at the front of the restaurant, where they can find beautiful displays of Middle Eastern pantry items like oils, spices, canned goods and jars of pickled vegetables. They offer house-made spice mixes like their take on dukkah, a traditional Egyptian seasoning blend that combines nuts, seeds and warm spices. It is used in many of Azhar's menu items and luckily for their customers, it can be brought home and mixed with olive oil for dipping or sprinkled on top of various dishes for a unique savoury touch.

The marketplace also houses Azhar's homemade pastries, which are piled high in sunlit-filled displays and are perfect for an on-the-go breakfast or treat. Their famous Potato Bun is made using a mixture of house yogurt and fermented potato in the dough, which then gets baked in the wood oven and turned into a deeply satisfying, dark golden brown delight.

The Iranian-style Barbari flatbread is another favourite, with a crisp exterior that gets generously coated in nigella and white sesame seeds. Other baked goods include chocolate babka, sourdough baguettes and loaves, Jerusalem bagels baked with black garlic and sumac, and wood-fired challah bread made with fresh yeast, eggs and honey.

At the bar, guests can sip on a Turkish coffee with their morning or afternoon treat and pick up a bottle or two of pre-made house cocktails to bring home for later. The fridge in the marketplace is also stocked with a selection of wines, beers and prepared items to take home, including dips, sauces and cured meats.

The dining room in the middle of the restaurant is all set for service whenever regulations allow, complete with greenery, muted grey and blue tones, plush booths and plenty of space for the indoor meals that will (hopefully) soon be enjoyed.

At the back of the space is an open-concept kitchen area that certainly contributes to the liveliness and marketplace feel of the restaurant as a whole. A central marble prep table provides ample space for the chef and his team to assemble meticulously plated meals. Shelves lined with jars of pickled goods and containers of spices sit against a backdrop of a blue-and-white tiled wall that gives an Israeli-style flair to the kitchen.

While most of the marketplace and pastry items will be mainstays, many of the heartier appetizers and entrees on the menu will change on a weekly basis. Chef Cameron dreams up mezze-style dishes that utilize local, seasonal produce, Middle Eastern flavours and traditional techniques, offering guests both vegetable-forward and meat-centric dishes that are always gorgeously prepared.

Staples like ultra-creamy house hummus topped with spicy zhoug and house labneh served with pickled cucumbers are perfect starters to snack on with their ridiculously fluffy pita bread. The pita bread is made from a mixture of overnight fermented potato and sourdough, baked in the wood oven and topped with za'atar imported from Lebanon. On the topic of ingredients that come straight from the source, they bring in giant buckets of tahini from Israel to incorporate the smooth, nutty sesame butter into many of their menu items.

The stunning Boston lettuce salad currently on the menu features puffed grains and seeds, chopped fresh herbs, pomegranate seeds and a creamy green goddess dressing to tie it all together.

Muhammara dip, which is made from fire-roasted red peppers and red walnuts, is featured as a base for an oven-roasted escarole dish with lemon and a sprinkle of garlicky sourdough breadcrumbs to finish. All of their dips and spreads, including the muhammara as well as labneh, baba ganoush, shakshuka sauce and tzatziki, are sold pre-packaged in the marketplace fridge for quick grab-and-go options.

The pavlova dessert is most certainly a showstopper, baked in their wood oven and topped with a chamomile flower pastry cream, a tart passion fruit curd, whipped white chocolate, sesame honeycomb and a dusting of dehydrated passion fruit.

Weekends will feature some extra menu items, too, like whole roasted cauliflower, flatbreads and other entrées. Azhar also offers tasting menus for pickup through  Tock , where folks can order weekend meal boxes curated with four courses of tasty dishes that serve two people for $100 (eight dishes total). If you want to sample a few different menu items, these boxes are an excellent choice for both vegetarians and meat-eaters, as they have options for both.

Azhar is the spot to visit if you're craving creative, authentic Middle Eastern food and a feel-good vibe that will hopefully be bustling with lively crowds soon enough. For now, head on over to grab a few delicious dishes from their menu of the week, a Turkish coffee and some delectable pantry items and prepared foods to bring home and elevate your home cooking game. And whatever you do, don't forget the fresh bread for dipping!

Eastern Journey

Our trip was in Eastern Canada the first of July 2023. It was a nightmare to figure out how to get to our hotel from the train and subways, up and down soooo many stairs then walking the rest of the way with our luggage mind you. Definitely call for a ride to the hotel. Our first hotel was nice in Toronto. Niagara Falls was fun and definitely something to experience. The tour buses on our whole trip were comfortable and we had great drivers, especially Mike. He was so personable and took really good care of us! The second hotel in Ottawa was good too but when we went to Quebec City that was the worst hotel I’ve ever been in! The beds were uncomfortable, the air conditioner didn’t work well at all, and the shower was messed up and only ran hot water. Then the water wouldn’t shut off so we had to call someone to shut it off with tools. The tub didn’t have anything on the bottom for you to not slip so I slipped getting in and tore the towel rack down which was just glued on. I ended up having to place a towel in the shower where we could take a shower and not fall down. The people that worked there were rude. The carpet in the hallways was disgusting and coming up which is a major trip hazard. One couple that was on the tour with us showed me a piece of metal that fell from his ceiling in his room and hit him in the head. We had to stay two miserable nights there! Our next hotel in Montreal was okay and the last hotel they put us in back in Toronto was a very nice hotel and had a wonderful breakfast. Our guide was nice and informative too. We enjoyed seeing everything we did either while in the bus or walking around the cities. I’m not sure if I will do another group tour or not. Guess we’ll see….

Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Had the absolute best time here! The food is phenomenal and service is wonderful. Came here with a group of 8 around 6:30 and they were able to accommodate us easily by combining 3 tables -- but the restaurant started filling up quite quickly around 7-7:30, so if you're looking to avoid the rush and wait, definitely go a bit earlier! The ambiance inside is absolutely beautiful. It's classy, has gorgeous earth toned decor, and all the dishes and glasses are so unique and very pretty. Went so well with the modern Mediterranean vibe of the food. The candles and dimmer lighting really complete the ambiance. The presentation of every dish was stunning as well! So photoworthy; almost too pretty to eat. The service here was incredible. We had such a friendly and knowledgeable waitress and felt very taken care of the whole night. All of the staff here are very polite! We basically ordered the whole menu, so here's the rundown: Falafel: 6/10. Too salty for me, but the yogurt sauce helped a bit. Pincanha steak: 7.5/10. A little fatty and not the most tender but really great flavor! Mushroom and pumpkin skewer: 7/10. The pumpkin and mushroom were both on the firmer side. Great flavor. Hummus with pita: 8/10. LOVED the fluffy soft pita -- it comes piping hot and super puffy! Hummus was really unique as well with cauliflower and a sweet jam (I think mango?) as well as pomegranate. This was one of the most unique hummus dishes I've ever had. Shrimp skewer: 8/10. Great flavor and texture. Chicken skewer: 9/10. Loved the flavor and crunchy texture of the sesame seeds. Chicken was super tender and not dry at all. Garlic potatoes: 8.5/10. Amazing creamy aioli sauce and the most crispy exterior with a soft interior. Delicious. Halloumi: 10/10 BEST DISH OF THE NIGHT. I looove halloumi and this was such a perfect combo of sweet and salty. It comes with pistachio sprinkled on top and a sweet almond paste with roasted grapes and it's absolutely chefs kiss. Highly recommend!!! Brussels sprouts: 7/10. Nothing super outstanding here but still good. Wish they were a bit more crispy and had more sauce. Octopus skewer: 5.5/10. A little hard to chew and not much flavor. Olives: 6/10. Not a huge fan of olives but these had an interesting citrusy texture. Babaganoush: 7/10. Classic flavor, nothing crazy. Super creamy and goes well with the pita. Chocolate mousse brownie dessert: 7.5/10. The mousse was more like a thick fudge, but brownie pieces added a nice crunch. Cherry cake with pistachio and yogurt: 10/10. This cake was PHENOMENAL. I could've eaten that whole thing. It's so delicious with the sweet cherry jam and the salty pistachios on top. Actually such a genius combo!! Don't skip this one :) TLDR: halloumi and cherry cake are a must get. Skip the octopus & falafel if you're on limited stomach space. But honestly everything was really good!! Would highly recommend if you're looking for a nicer dinner spot with creative, delicious, and beautiful dishes! Everything had such a nice balance of salty and sweet.

This area of the city is super trendy with many unique people and restaurants. We visited this place because we wanted middle eastern. Decor is unique and hip and so was the crowd. Service was friendly and efficient. Wife got the falafel and hummus plate and I got the lamb and egg burger. The falafel and hummus plate was good but they could have included a pita. The lamb burger was super tasty but the portion was small. Overall the service and flavours were very good but portions were small.

From start to finish, Azhar was utterly delighted. The healthy food options are a breath of fresh air. It's rare to find a place that combines fine dining with such a focus on health, but this restaurant does it with finesse. Every dish was not only beautifully presented but also packed with wholesome, quality ingredients. The flavours are out of this phenomenal. They take classic Middle Eastern dishes and infuse them with a modern twist that makes each bite an absolute delight. The attention to detail in their preparation is evident in every bite. The dips - they are a MUST. Creamy, rich, and bursting with flavour, they're the perfect way to star. The pitas are baked fresh when ordered, arriving hot at the table. It's an experience and you'll find yourself craving more, they are heavenly. One of the things I truly appreciate about this place is its ambiance. While it's considered fine dining, it maintains a relaxed and informal atmosphere. It's the perfect spot for a night out, where you can savour every moment without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. In summary, Azhar exceeded all of my expectations.

Delicious Mediterranean dishes in a beautiful ambiance restaurant. First of all the interior of the restaurant is an entire mood itself. It's nicely lit and the perfect dimness for a date or night out - so romantic! Servers were amazing thoroughout the night as well. Washrooms are a little dark and hard to see, but easily accessible on the first floor. All the dishes we got were great and was able to share with the table. Really took my taste buds for a spin! Here's what we got: Halloumi 5/5 - You can't go wrong with grilled halloumi that is salty and creamy but pairs perfectly with the grilled grapes as well Baba Ganoush and pita 5/5 - The dip itself is creamy and delicious. Nicely seasoned and comes with some olive oil. The pita is fluffy and puffed up when it's brought to the table. Sesame chicken 5/5 - Favourite dish of the night. It's has a sesame seed crust and is slightly sweet but pairs perfectly with their yogurt dipping sauce. This is a must get Prawns 5/5 - Perfectly grilled to perfection and topped with dill and leek which made it super refreshing. Overall, loved the food and ambiance here. Can't wait to come back for more dip, pita and chicken!

This was a long awaited visit as I quite enjoyed the grab and go items during the dreaded COVID start days. I enjoyed their Shakshuka sauce and barbari bread and some of the dips. I was looking forward to this visit so booked ahead. Unfortunately Ossington has been stripped bare so parking took forever nearby. The space seem nice and open till you sit down on the seats by the wall. It is too close for comfort with nearby tables patrons almost feel like are sitting at the table with you. Makes it hard to talk and no to mention keep things by the side. I wish they just remove a table and space out a little bit. I ordered the Shakshuka and it came with some mezes. Mezes were decent though shakshuka was a small portion and surprisingly didn't come with any bread. Also no spoon what gives? Bowls and knives are never a good combo. OK stuff but I wouldn't go out of my way to try them again.

Everything at this restaurant hit the spot. It was tasty and the portions were pretty good. We got the halloumi, garlic potatoes, hummus sujuk (which came with 2 extra fluffy pitas), freekeh Tablouleh, and chicken skewer. We each also got the lavender lime leaf gimlet. I'd go back for more of their food in a heartbeat. The service was also very nice. We were one of only 2 tables at the restaurant so it seemed like a slow day. It's also a very cute spot on ossington and perfect for a date night.

The brunch at Ahzar is a fun and tasty experience! They focus on flavours and deliver on it. Highlights for me is their dessert, M'hancha with sour cherry, nuts and whipped yogurt which is similar to baklava. I've tried their brunch twice and look forward to having dinner there.

Went for brunch, they have a small menu but they deliver! I had the hummus avocado toast with falafel and pomegranate juice. I loved the toast, the bread was lovely the the hummus avocado blend creamy and the olive oil fresh! Definitely recommend that! The falafel was good because of the dip, the labneh with mango was yummy! My friends had great things to say about the pita bread, which was fresh out of the oven! One caveat is the drinks while the food is reasonably priced some of the non alcoholic drinks are bit expensive. The decor and feel is very pretty, definitely recommend this place! We were 8of us and great service!

My new favourite place for experimental Middle Eastern! Brought to you by the same folks who own Gusto, Azhar is a beautiful restaurant with delicious eats. Just about everything we ordered - fresh pita, babaganouj, lamb, mushroom, and mujadara - was delicious! My only gripes were that the seating was pretty uncomfortable - for some reason it was very low to the ground and not suitable for taller folks. And while the pita was delicious, it's a whopping $6 each for each mini pita, and the dips come with just one of them.

Hummus masabacha was excellent. Very tasty and flavourful. The mezze offering were amazing. Sweet, savoury, all perfectly blended together.

What is a COVID-19 PCR test?

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for COVID-19 is a molecular test that analyzes your upper respiratory specimen, looking for genetic material (ribonucleic acid or RNA) of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Scientists use the PCR technology to amplify small amounts of RNA from specimens into deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is replicated until SARS-CoV-2 is detectable if present. The PCR test has been the gold standard test for diagnosing COVID-19 since authorized for use in February 2020. It’s accurate and reliable.

Who should get tested for COVID-19?

Your healthcare provider may recommend testing for COVID-19 if you have any of the following symptoms:

• Fever or chills
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Muscle or body aches
• New loss of taste or smell
• Sore throat
• Congestion or runny nose
• Nausea or vomiting

Not everyone with COVID-19 develops symptoms. And not all symptomatic people develop all of the symptoms listed above. Please check with your healthcare provider if you’re feeling unwell during the COVID-19 pandemic — even if you’ve been vaccinated.

TEST DETAILS

There are three key steps to the COVID-19 PCR test:

Sample collection: A healthcare provider uses a swab to collect respiratory material found in your nose. A swab is a soft tip on a long, flexible stick that goes into your nose. There are different types of nose swabs, including nasal swabs that collect a sample immediately inside your nostrils and nasopharyngeal swabs that go further into the nasal cavity for collection. Either type of swab is sufficient for collecting material for the COVID-19 PCR test. After collection, the swab is sealed in a tube and then sent to a laboratory.

Extraction: When a laboratory scientist receives the sample, they isolate (extract) genetic material from the rest of the material in the sample.

PCR: The PCR step then uses special chemicals and enzymes and a PCR machine called a thermal cycler. Each heating and cooling cycle increases (amplifies) the amount of the targeted genetic material in the test tube. After many cycles, millions of copies of a small portion of the SARS-CoV-2 virus’s genetic material are present in the test tube. One of the chemicals in the tube produces a fluorescent light if SARS-CoV-2 is present in the sample. Once amplified enough, the PCR machine can detect this signal. Scientists use special software to interpret the signal as a positive test result.

What do COVID-19 PCR test results mean?

A positive test result means that it's likely that you have an infection with SARS-CoV-2. This could be due to asymptomatic infection, but if you have symptoms, then this infection is called COVID-19. Most people have mild illness and can recover safely at home without medical care. Contact your healthcare provider if your symptoms get worse or if you have questions or concerns.

A negative test result means you probably didn't have an infection with SARS-CoV-2 at the time your specimen was collected. However, it's possible to have COVID-19 but not have the virus detected by the test. For example, this may happen if you recently became infected but you don’t have symptoms yet — or it could happen if you've had COVID-19 for more than a week before being tested. A negative test doesn’t mean you are safe for any length of time: You can be exposed to COVID-19 after your test, get infected and spread the SARS-Cov-2 virus to others.

Billie Eilish will be stopping in Toronto this fall as part of her  Hit Me Hard and Soft  tour.

Alongside her latest studio album,  Hit Me Hard and Soft,  the  Bad Guy  singer just announced that she'll be embarking on a world tour starting this fall, with two nights in Toronto.

The tour kicks off on Sept 29 in Quebec City before Eilish heads west to spend two nights rocking the Scotiabank Arena on Oct 1 and 2.

The tour will then head south of the border to the States before legs in Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom.

There actually was a time when Slipknot and the maggots (the loving name for their fans) did not completely rule the world. 25 years ago, the Des Moines band were just some guys trying to get their new LP noticed– a record that would start their metamorphosis into the most crucial band of the 21st century. That record would change rock as we know it, measuring success with a yardstick bigger than music, one for the influence on youth culture writ large. But these faceless demons from middle America would not only capture the hearts of the youth, they would help guide their tastes, and challenge them and their kin towards a new future.

Released on June 29th, 1999, Slipknot’s self-titled debut was a smash hit with critics and an instant classic with fans. It was, and is, a molotov cocktail signaling a revolution– embracing a creative direction that eschewed metal traditions in favor of fresh ideas. While the jaw-clenching riffs coupled with Ross Robinson’s venomous production were crucial to the album’s success, it was the care and attention to detail in the songcraft that moved the needle from “great” to “benchmark.” Not too shabby for a bunch of guys that only hoped to be heard.

“We loved what we did with the first record but we didn’t even know if there was gonna be anything after that,” recalls guitarist Jim Root . “We just wanted people to hear it. Selling out of records and shows, having successful tours– those are goals for any band. But the dream scenario in some ways, came true for us.”

In the years following, Slipknot’s popularity nipped at the heels of elder statesmen and even the band’s heroes, eventually navigating this brave new world with unending drive, fresh ideas and a bloodlust for odometer clicks. Tens of billions of streams and tens of millions of subscribers and followers later, the accolades tell the story: 64 award nominations and 27 wins including a Grammy for “Before I Forget“ from Vol. 3 .  A seemingly endless number of tour dates. Headlining slots at some of the biggest festivals in the world such as Download, Rock In Rio, Hellfest, Wacken and many more. Not to mention RIAA certifications by the truckload– 14 platinum certifications and 40 gold across more than 30 million in record and video sales.

In addition, Slipknot positioned themselves for success with the creation of their own festival Knotfest in 2012, a traveling, multi-stage and experiential event that has appeared 28 times across several countries and locations. The festival has since spun off into a successful entertainment media hub – Knotfest.com , which became a juggernaut of its own making, giving a platform to young freethinkers and like-minded artists.

All of Slipknot’s achievements have helped them claim their rightful seat as pioneers and thought leaders, establishing them as a generational talent– loved by parents AND their children alike. And of course with all those incredible live performances, all that influence, and all that history of playing all those incredible SONGS, Slipknot has only attracted the most dedicated of fans, reaching all the way back to that fateful self-titled effort.

Slipknot is approaching this 25th anniversary by making the conscious decision to connect to fans as closely as possible, in a similar way to how they encountered Slipknot all those years ago. “Every time I’ve walked on stage, it’s never been about how many people have been there because my culture, the maggots, always show up,” says founding member Shawn “clown” Crahan with a smile.

  “But as we’ve grown as a band, we have had fewer and fewer of those intimate, personal moments, trading them for massive ones. So we’re gonna make it more personal on the anniversary, but how remains to be seen. Just get ready to have your face kicked in. Because we just do what we do, spread that maggot culture – that disease. And you’ve been infected.”

Toronto clinches top spot in PWHL with 4-1 win over Minnesota

TORONTO (AP) — Natalie Spooner scored twice and Toronto clinched first place in the inaugural season of the Professional Women’s Hockey League with a 4-1 win over Minnesota on Wednesday night.

Toronto (12-4-0-7) moved ahead of Montreal (10-3-5-5) in the standings with 44 points, while holding the tiebreaker in case of a tie by regular season’s end. Both teams have one game remaining before the post-season begins next week.

“It feels great,” Spooner said of clinching first on home ice. “That was the goal the whole season, the regular season, to be the first-place team. And to be able to pull that out and build throughout the season, it feels good to be able to get that going into the playoffs.”

Earning first place means Toronto is able to choose between the third- or fourth-place team as its first playoff opponent.

“It will be, probably more of a collaboration and a joint effort than most people would think it is,” Toronto head coach Troy Ryan said of picking an opponent.

Hannah Miller and Emma Maltais, with an empty-netter, also scored for Toronto, which extended its winning streak to three games. Kristen Campbell made 25 saves.

Ryan had said heading into the final five games of the year after the international break that he didn’t want his team ending up in games they have to grind out. Adding onto a 6-2 win over New York on Sunday, he was content with his team.

“That was my only message in the (locker) room — it was nice that we didn’t have to grind this out,” he said. “I was able to play 13 forwards and six (defenders), so it’s just nice that you’re not having to tire it out, shortening your bench at this point in the season.

“You want to be able to give everybody some valuable experience right now in meaningful games in case you have to rely on them to play key minutes in the playoffs.”

Spooner’s two goals extended her lead atop the league for points (25) and goals (18). Maltais also dished out two assists, taking the league lead with 15 on the season.

Michela Cava scored for Minnesota (8-4-3-8), which entered the game needing just one point to clinch a playoff spot and third place in the standings.

“That’s what I just told our team, we still have another tomorrow,” Minnesota head coach Ken Klee said. “We still control our own destiny.”

Maddie Rooney stopped 19 shots in the last of four regular-season matchups between the two sides, with Toronto taking the season series 2-1-0-1. Toronto went 2-for-3 on the power play while holding Minnesota scoreless on three advantages.

“We lost the special teams battle,” said Klee, who felt his team started the game out strong. “In the third, again, we were coming out firing and then it just seemed like the net was getting smaller and smaller and … they did a great job blocking shots, you’ve got to give them credit.”

Cava opened the scoring 4:14 into the first period. Taylor Heise found Maggie Flaherty from behind the net, and Cava tipped in Flaherty’s point shot past Campbell.

Miller tied it on the power play at 10:16. Maltais, from the right faceoff circle, sent the puck to Sarah Nurse, who was near the back of the net and whizzed a pass into the slot for Miller who finished off the tic-tac-toe play.

Spooner put Toronto ahead 11:10 into the second period on the power play. Renata Fast sent in a point shot that Spooner got her stick on.

Spooner added to her goal total and Toronto’s lead 7:21 into the third period. She blocked Lee Stecklein’s point shot and immediately went on a breakaway, where she got Rooney to bite on a deke well enough to almost the leave the entire net open and scored.

Maltais scored into an empty net with 2:05 remaining while almost falling with two defenders on her heels.

Minnesota wraps up its season in New York on Saturday.

Toronto hosts Ottawa to close the season on Sunday.
