  • The best places to go in October: Our top travel picks for a solo holiday

Nina Zietman 22nd Oct 2022 5 min read

October, while resplendent in its autumn colours, is also the month when things get noticeably darker and colder in the Northern Hemisphere. So, consider escaping to the sultry climes of Southeast Asia , the beaches of Indonesia or flying as far south as possible in Europe to chase the final rays of summer.

Italy and Spain in particular brim with food festivals at this time of year, celebrating everything from white truffles to Iberian ham. But with the season’s shifting, let’s not waste any more time: here are the best destinations for a solo holiday in October…

Card image

Average temperature: 25°C / 77°F

Why you should visit now:.

Rainy season has come to an end, ushering in dry, sunny days to Laos , especially towards the end of October. The Mekong River runs like a lifeline through its centre, making boat trips one of the best ways to see the compact country. Drift past emerald-carpeted foothills and remote fishing communities, before learning to cook traditional Laos dishes (try refreshing khao poon , cold vermicelli noodles, served with raw vegetables and a coconut milk sauce).

Expert tip:

Pronouncing Laotian words isn’t easy, but it’s worth making an effort. “Hello” is sabaidee, while khob chai means “thank you”.

Average temperature: 23°C / 73°F

Jordan will likely experience its first drops of rainfall for months in October, meaning desert blooms suddenly spring to life, giving an injection of colour to the arid landscape. Keen hikers should head to the Dana Biosphere Reserve: a wild, mountainous landscape, punctuated by rugged peaks and cavernous gorges. You’ll spot centuries-old tribal villages and, if you’re lucky, endangered species like the Arabian wolf. Come nightfall, the sky reveals a glittering tapestry of constellations, thanks to the lack of light pollution.

Don’t leave Jordan with ordering a limonana , a refreshing drink made from whizzed-up spearmint, lemons, sugar and tonnes of ice.

Card image

Average temperature: 19°C / 66°F

Food is always a good reason to visit Italy , especially in October when mushrooms, truffles and chestnuts come into season. Piedmont hosts the infamous International White Truffle Fair in Alba this month, where you can sample thick strands of taglioni, tangled in a buttery truffle sauce. But, of course, few regions can match Tuscany for rustic splendour in autumn. Truffles here are in abundance, plates are piled high and glasses are pleasingly full, as Tuscans reap the rewards of the harvest.

To eat spaghetti like a real Italian, twist only with your fork. No knife or spoon needed.

South Africa

As the dry season draws to a close, wildlife spotting in South Africa’s Kruger National Park heats up. Watch rhinos and buffalos gather around the parched watering holes, especially early in the month. Alternatively, learn how to track big game on foot during a sunrise bush hike. Over in Cape Town, humpback whales are glimpsed at this time of year, cruising the coastline with their calves towards Mossel Bay.

Head to Hout Bay for the freshest seafood. The Lookout restaurant serves up local mussels and crayfish, drenched in garlic butter.

Card image

Average temperature: 20°C / 68°F

Summer crowds have subsided, but temperatures are still balmy across southern Spain in October. Just over an hour from Seville, the town of Aracena springs into action this month for Feria del Jamón (Ham Fair). After all, the region is home to Iberian ham; sample wafer-thin slivers while watching the strangely compelling ham-slicing contest. Meanwhile, south of Cádiz, consistent waves will start rolling into El Palmar de Vejer, a lesser-known surf spot.

Aracena sits in the heart of a large national park, lined with hiking trails. Set off from Castaño del Robledo, passing chestnut trees and panoramic views along the route.

Card image

Average temperature: 27°C / 81°F

The tail-end of the April-to-October dry season on Indonesia’s most-visited island means crowds start to ease off in Bali this month. Head to the protected marine reserves of Menjangan and West Bali National Park for diving and underwater drama. Or seek out the sandy shores of Sanur for a session at the Rip Curl School of Surf .

Don’t want to go totally solo? Flash Pack’s group tour in Bali also takes in time on Legian Beach, the Gili Islands, a hike up Mount Batur and dinner in the rural farming village of Subak Guliang, with tables set in a star-lit rice paddy.

Card image

Peru’s dry season, from May to October, is the best time to explore the Andes, with clear skies and little rainfall. If you’re planning on trekking to Machu Picchu as a solo traveller, you’ll need to book your tickets well in advance, as often the Inca trail gets full quickly. Group tours to Peru can be a great way to navigate the bureaucracy and ensure you’re tackling the altitude with expert guides and a like-minded crew of fellow hikers to cheer you on. After all, llamas can’t be relied on for everything…

Peruvian food is having a moment. Just outside of Cusco, Mill  is one of the city’s top restaurants, sourcing ingredients from the surrounding ecosystem and overlooking the Incan ruins of Moray.

This list is covering a lot of the country! From the west coast to the east coast and some spots in between, this map shows a visual, which can be useful when planning your fall getaway.

Best places to visit in October in USA

October is a fabulous time to travel, and these are some of the most ideal spots in these gorgeous United States to see. From popular fall foliage spots to destinations you’ve never heard of, let’s dive into the list!

1. The Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina to Virginia

best places to visit in October USA winding road with bright red orange and green trees

Average temp:  high 62, low 41

Stretching 469 miles from the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the entrance to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (where it turns into the equally scenic Skyline Drive), the Blue Ridge Parkway is widely regarded as one of America’s most scenic roads.

More than 15 million people using the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) each year, making it the most visited of all the national park units in the United States. So it’s also arguably the most popular!

The BRP’s origins date back to 1935, when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the historic initiative part of his New Deal. It was designed to improve American infrastructure and create jobs as a means to accelerate the nation’s economic recovery after the Great Depression.

It took until 1966 to construct the majority of the road, and another 21 years to finish the picturesque stretch from the Linn Cove Viaduct to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

The result is an epic and iconic road trip that dazzles with spectacular colors in the fall, when the leaves turn to sun-speckled gems in red, orange, and golden hues. It’s by far one of the most scenic fall drives in the US!!

An autumn drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway takes you through the Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests; numerous impressive state parks (including NC’s Mount Mitchell State Park, the highest peak east of the Mississippi); and countless hiking trails, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and streams.

There are also some 200 breathtaking BRP overlooks as well as charming mountain towns such as Banner Elk, Boone, and  Little Switzerland .

The best of the parkway’s landmarks include Grandfather Mountain State Park, the Linville Gorge Wilderness, Looking Glass Rock, and Julian Price Memorial Park. Each offers opportunities to savor the splendor of America’s wilderness at its most pristine, preserved by FDR for future generations.

2. Bend, Oregon (one of the most underrated and best places to visit in October USA)

Average temp:  high 62, low 33

While Bend, Oregon is a fantastic destination year-round, the fall is a great time to visit this Central Oregon town. You’ll find far fewer crowds than in the summer months and the crisp autumn air is perfect for many outdoor adventures.

Bend is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, and October is a great time to experience Oregon’s high desert. Cooler autumn temperatures make it the perfect time of year to hit the nearby trails.

There are a variety of  hikes in Bend, Oregon  for all skill levels and in a diverse range of settings, from pine forests to snowcapped peaks to juniper and sage dotted deserts. You can also get out onto the water on a SUP or kayak or cruise through some of the famed Bend mountain biking trails.

A fun fall activity is to head to nearby Smith Rock State Park for beautiful views and a lovely riverside walk. Once you’ve had your fill, head to the ranch just outside the park that has a large pumpkin patch, food trucks and festive games for all ages.

October is the perfect time of year to hop around the different breweries around town to sample the local brews. If you’re a real craft beer enthusiast, you may want to participate in the Bend Ale Trail, which is run by the local tourism board. Collect stamps at each brewery you visit for a prize!

3. Mammoth Lakes, California

Average temp:  high 60, low 30

One of the best places to visit in October in USA is  Mammoth Lakes . It’s located in Eastern California and is one of the most underrated places to visit in the USA in the fall. The beautiful colorful trees with the mountains in the background make this a wonderful place to stay in October.

June Lake Loop is one of the best spots to experience the fall colors. There are many lakes to explore on the loop like Silver Lake, June Lake, Gull Lake, and Grant Lake.

The whole loop is filled with stunning yellow Aspen trees, and there are many spots to explore with these beautiful trees. Make sure to stop by Silver Lake Cafe for lunch and watch the stunning views of Silver Lake while you eat.

Another great spot to see fall colors is Convict Lake which is located southeast of Mammoth Lakes . The yellow Aspens are situated at the mountain base, so it is best to walk the whole loop.

You can also visit many of the lakes that are located in Mammoth Lakes Basin. They include lakes like Twin Lakes, Lake Mamie, Horseshoe Lake, Lake Mary and Lake George. It’s a magical area to explore in the early cool fall morning.

There are so many yellow colors in Mammoth Lakes. It is probably one of the most underrated areas to experience fall foliage, and one of the best places to visit in the US in October!

4. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado (one of the best October vacation destinations)

creek with snow yellow foliage on trees and mountains in distance

Average temp:  high 46, low 29

Colorado’s Rocky Mountain is one of the most beautiful (and popular) national parks in the country.

Located about 2 hours away from Denver, this park takes time ans effort to explore with countless trails, waterfalls and even one of Colorado’s most popular “fourteeners” Longs Peak.

Rocky Mountain National Park is pure magic during fall, when the incredible golden colors come out in full display. The best time to see them is from mid-September through early October.

Another thing you should know about visiting RMNP during the fall is that weekends still might be busy, as more people come to take pictures and see thousands of amazing golden-hue Aspen trees. Crowds begin to dissipate in the fall, and if you want the ultimate experience, try to plan your visit for weekday.

To see the fall colors in their full glory, take a drive along the Trail Ridge Road that is open from Memorial Day until late October. The alpine highway is a perfect way to enjoy the the fall scenery at RMNP without getting out of the car. In fact, the Trail Ridge Road is one of the top Colorado bucket list activity!

Still, try to explore some trails. Take a hike or two to enjoy the fall colors , and if you plan on doing a more challenging trail at a higher altitude, make sure to bring some layers . Temperatures begin to drop in the fall, and it’s a good idea to bring a jacket with you, especially if you plan on camping here.

Note: through most of October, the park requires a timed entry permit. Plan your trip in advance and grab your permit here .

5. Door County, Wisconsin

Average temp:  high 56, low 41

Door County, Wisconsin likely isn’t the first spot to come to mind when thinking of amazing fall colors in the United States. However, the colors here are breathtaking , and there are many wonderful activities to enjoy in Door County during fall!

The colors begin changing during the end of September, and visitors hoping to see the leaves during their peak color should plan to visit the area in mid-October.

To see some of the best fall colors in Door County, try hiking in Peninsula State Park, Whitefish Dunes State Park, Cave Point County Park and The Ridges Sanctuary, just to name a few spots.

For those looking for a less active leaf-peeping experience, be sure to take a drive along Highway 42. You can also see the leaves from above at viewing platforms, such as the newly constructed Sturgeon Bay Maritime Museum Lighthouse Tower.

Fall is also a great time to visit the apple orchards in Door County. Be sure to stop by Wood Orchard Market, where you can get awesome seasonal products such as their special apple cider donuts!

With the cooler fall temperatures, cozying up to a fire during a traditional Door County fish boil is one of the best  things to do in Wisconsin  at this time of year. Fish Boils are fun to watch and delicious. Each boil master makes theirs a little differently but, you can count on all recipes using white fish and various vegetables and spices boiled in a large kettle over an open fire.

Door County is an underrated destination, and definitely one of the best places to visit in October USA!

6. San Diego, California

california shoreline with ocean trees grass and buildings along coast

Average temp:  high 74, low 61

Listen, San Diego has amazing temperatures most of the year, so there’s not really a ‘bad’ time to go. However, as someone who’s traveled to San Diego many times in the fall, I can truly say that October is a fantastic time to visit this amazing city!

Less tourists visit San Diego in the fall, so there’s not as many limitations to amazing activities because of overcrowding. For instance, the San Diego Zoo is a fantastic spot to explore. It’s really enjoyable in the fall when you can see what you’re there to see, instead of waiting all the time.

An amazing activity in the San Diego area is kayaking in La Jolla Cove in October. Other top things to do include Balboa Park, Old Town San Diego and Coronado Island.

By the way, here’s an idea of how to spend a weekend in San Diego if it’s on your short list!

7. Oahu, Hawaii (top of the list for warm places to visit in October in USA)

warm places to visit in October in usa view of beach looking down with palm trees and blue water

Average temp:  high 84, low 69

The island of Oahu has beautiful weather throughout the year but fall is one of the best times to visit. At this time of year, you can expect fewer crowds around the island, plenty of days with clear blue skies and the island is still really warm so you can spend your time lying on the beach.

While it may be hotter in the summer months, the fall actually offers a more enjoyable temperature so you can get out and explore the island.

One of the highlights of any visit to Oahu is exploring the many beaches dotted around the island. The most beautiful beach on Oahu is Lanikai Beach , which is a palm tree lined stretch of brilliant white sand and crystal-clear blue water.

As it’s on the east side of the island the water is usually quite calm so it is ideal for swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. If you are feeling energetic you can kayak out to the Mokalua Islands which are just a few hundred metres from shore.

Another great activity is to explore Kualoa Regional Park, which is where scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed. You can explore the park on foot or take a quad bike tour. The mountains here are unique with their deep ridges and tropical green coverings.

During a visit to Oahu you can also snorkel, surf, hike, visit local farms to try fresh fruit and so much more. It’s an amazing island and the weather in particular makes this a perfect fall getaway.

8. Acadia National Park, Maine (a top choice on this list of best places to visit in October in USA)

best places to visit in October USA view of multicolored fall foliage with ocean in distance

Average temp:  high 55, low 38

Acadia is among a very small group of US national parks with two genuine ‘peak’ seasons. Summer is naturally congested in Acadia, but fall is equally as busy and because of the spectacularly beautiful Autumnal foliage lighting up the park.

But striking colors aren’t everything and the fall season is loaded with other benefits in Acadia National Park.

Hiking conditions are cooler in September and October, which comes in particularly handy when climbing both of Acadia’s adrenaline pumping hikes – Beehive Trail and Precipice Trail.

Beehive and Precipice are the two outstanding hikes but there are a dozen other trails without ladder climbing elements. All of which summit with remarkable views over the Gulf of Maine, gorgeous lakes, tiny islands and of course mountain sides covered in vibrant orange, yellow, red and green trees.

Epic sunrises are one of Acadia’s greatest assets and from the summit of ultra-popular Cadillac Mountain, you can be among the first people in the US to see the sun rise over the eastern horizon. In fall, sunrise is over an hour later than in summer, which means a slightly less agonizing alarm time.

To see the richest and most vivid colors, simply get stuck into all of the  best things to do in Acadia National Park , including hikes, lakes and carriage roads.

Pro tip: Be sure to book Bar Harbor accommodation a long way in advance to avoid missing out and always be out in the park early, parking spaces are limited and fill quickly each day.

Without a doubt, Acadia National Park is one of the best places to visit in October in USA.

9. Moab, Utah

Average temp:  high 74, low 41

Moab, Utah is an adventure city in the Southwest USA. With countless national parks, state parks and recreation areas surrounding Moab, it’s truly an amazing place to vacation.

It makes this list of the best places to visit in October in the USA because the weather usually hasn’t turned too wintry yet to enjoy the outdoors. And in the summer, Moab is packed with tourism!

If you love hiking, October is the perfect time to explore Arches National Park by foot or hike Canyonlands National Park . There’s also white water rafting, canyoneering, wineries and breweries and so much more.

Visitors should still book accommodations as far out as possible to get the best pricing. And be sure to book any tours in advance since Moab is a hot spot!

10. Asheville, North Carolina

beautiful waterfall surrounded by orange and yellow fall foliage in Asheville NC

Average temp:  high 68, low 46

Asheville, North Carolina is one of the best places in the US to experience fall.  The mountains are blazing with red, orange, and yellow leaves, the weather is perfect and the orchards are open.

While it may be the busiest time of year, it’s well worth the visit, but try to time it for a weekday visit instead of the weekends.

Be sure to spend some time walking around downtown Asheville and wandering the shops of the hip West Asheville area.  Visiting the Biltmore Estate is also a must-do.

There are so many amazing places to eat in Asheville, you’ll be able to try new, delicious food for every meal. Tupelo Honey and Gan Shan West are great options.

One of the best things to do in Asheville is driving part of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway and the best time to  drive the Blue Ridge Parkway is fall . There are tons of hikes to waterfalls nearby like Linville Falls, Looking Glass Falls, or Moore Cove Falls.

Visiting Asheville in the fall makes all of these things even better than they normally are because you get to see them surrounded by stunning fall foliage, and who doesn’t love that?

11. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington (a PNW fave on this list of best places to visit in October in USA)

mount rainier in autumn with large mountain trees and fall foliage best places to visit in the US in October

Average temp:  high 47, low 33

Within the Pacific Northwest, Mount Rainier National Park boasts vibrant autumnal colors not only on the leaves of its famously grand trees, but also from the wildflowers, succulents, and other fauna carpeting the park’s rolling valleys.

If you’re looking for some of the best spots to see the fall colors, head to the Skyline Trail Mount Rainier, a 5.5 mile hike that takes you up close-and-personal with Mount Rainier and meanders through meadows aflame with autumnal foliage, from the vibrant red of scarlet paintbrush to the flaming orange of elderberries.

Alternatively, check out Naches Peak Loop, a part of the Pacific Crest Trail that traverses colorful subalpine valleys bursting with autumnal colors while snowy Mount Rainier looms overhead.

For a lower impact way to enjoy the fall foliage, take a scenic drive through the Chinook Scenic Byway. It’s a 107 mile road that will take you through both Mount Rainier National Park and Mount Baker – Snoqualmie National Forest.

This drive provides a gorgeous tour of rushing waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and of course, panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains’ beautiful fall colors.

With stunning autumnal foliage, world-class hiking, and a variety of activities for all types of travelers, Mount Rainier in the fall is a fantastic place to explore.

12. Boston, Massachusetts

Average temp:  high 62, low 47

Fall is the ultimate time to visit New England. From “leaf-peeping” in parks to crisp weather and apple-picking, it’s no wonder that visitors flock to the region from all over the world. If you’re seeking a combination of a city break and a fantastic fall destination, consider Boston.

Boston is teeming with history, green spaces, restaurants, and quaint neighborhoods to charm any visitor. Known as the “Cradle of the American Revolution,” don’t miss the Freedom Trail .

It’s a 2-mile, largely flat walking path that traces various sites of historical importance, such as the site of the Boston Massacre, the beginning of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride, and the Battle of Bunker Hill in Charlestown.

The Trail kicks off at the beautiful Boston Common, the oldest city park in the U.S., dating back to 1634! As you walk, you will also discover other lovely fall destinations, such as the Beacon Hill neighborhood, with its cobbled streets and romantic buildings. Be sure to stop at Acorn Street, said to be the most-photographed street in the U.S .

For some Victorian splendor, visit Copley Square and the Back Bay, gazing up at its two beautiful churches and the Boston Public Library – certainly one of the city’s most picturesque places. In particular, the Library’s Bates Room, with its glowing lamps and vintage books, will give you major “back-to-school season” vibes.

Nearby, the Commonwealth Avenue Mall has gorgeous trees in blazing fall colors – one of the best places to check out fall foliage in town . There are also a variety of parks to discover if foliage is what you seek, including the Fens, the Emerald Necklace parks system and the Public Garden.

Boston is certainly one of the best places to travel in October in USA, especially if you love history!

13. Napa Valley, California (a favorite of these fall vacation ideas)

Napa valley california in autumn view of winery with fall foliage and road with hills

Average temp:  high 77, low 47

It’s without question that the beautiful  Napa Valley  region in California is one of the most beautiful fall travel destinations in the USA. The normally vibrant green of the grapevines turns to shades of yellow, gold and orange in Napa Valley. And as the weather cools, the leaves start to fall, leaving a carpet of orangey gold underfoot.

Napa Valley is actually a region featuring a collection of towns in between the vineyards and rolling hills. The area is a really easy drive from the best things to do in San Francisco , and will take around 1.5 hours. Having a car is a great idea in Napa Valley so that you are able to hop between wine tastings and towns at your leisure.

For a spectacular view, Artesa Wines is a great choice for a wine tasting as the large-windowed cellar door sits stop a hill providing great panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

Auburn James, just outside St Helena, is also a beautiful winery to stop in at, with a gorgeous tasting room. It is worth noting that booking in advance for your tastings is always a good idea and usually involves a small payment.

Once you’ve finished your wine tastings, head into the township of St Helena for dinner at the Farmstead – a stellar farm to plate restaurant pairing local wines with delicious food.

14. Chicago, Illinois

Average temp:  high 62, low 50

If you’re looking for the best place to visit in October USA, look no further than Chicago!  This fun city is vibrant and full of fall foliage! Plus, there’s a ton of things to do, indoor and out.

While you could spend a week in the city, a Chicago 3 day itinerary would be just about perfect.

A must-see is Millennium Park and the world-famous “Bean.” October is the  perfect time to witness the ever changing colors of autumn against the Chicago skyline.  The Bean is sort of like the cherry on top of that whole experience!

If you’re into museums, Chicago has so many options to choose from. The Art Institute of Chicago is located downtown within walking distance of many other main attractions. Enjoy works by Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and so many others!

You can  visit the Willis Tower Skydeck , where you can walk out on a ledge over 100 stories up (indoor, don’t worry!) and see the city below.  Another perfect activity is the Navy Pier,  where you can walk, dine and even join in on fun activities like a mirror maze or giant Ferris wheel!

With typically mild weather conditions in Chicago, it’s one of the best US cities to visit in October! Daytime averages in the 60s and nightly about 50 degrees, layers will be your friend!

Pro tip : stay near downtown or within a short metro ride to the city center. It’s a relatively walkable city so be prepared with your cute walking shoes !

15. Kauai, Hawaii (another favorite on this list of best places to visit in the US in October)

kauai view of the napali coast rugged Ridgeline with colorful fauna and deep blue ocean

Average temp:  high 76, low 60

It sounds cliché, but Hawaii is such a gorgeous destination that it’s always worth the visit! However, as someone who has been to this beautiful island chain many times, visiting in the fall is one of my very favorite times to go.

Kauai is one of the best places to visit in October in the USA because it’s the shoulder season so it’s more affordable. Hiking trails and parking lots are generally less full, making it a great time to vacation on this island.

Highlights in Kauai in October

  • See the Waimea Canyon and NaPali Coast. It’s absolutely stunning!
  • Helicopter tour of the island . Since 80% of it isn’t drivable, this is the best way to see this gorgeous place.
  • Hike the first 2 miles of the Kalalau Trail . You’ll have to get advanced reservations to enter the park, but it’s a breathtaking experience!
  • Hike the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail in southern Kauai near Poipu. This is and easy walk and offers ocean views nearly the entire way.
  • Snorkel on Anini Beach. It’s one of the most calm spots on the island and a great spot to see sea turtles! (Just be sure to respect Hawaiian culture, keeping your distance from sea turtles and not walk on the coral.)

For the best places to eat in Kauai, it’s easier to get reservations for restaurants (which is recommended for Kauai since it’s a smaller island) in October.

Hands down, Hawaii is one of the very best states to visit in October, and Kauai is phenomenal!

17. Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Average temp:  high 58, low 46

Welcome to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the town National Geographic Travel has crowned “America’s Greatest Small Town.”

Portsmouth is the crown jewel of New Hampshire’s Seacoast and is perfectly situated within an hour from the White Mountains and an hour from Boston. Its location makes it the perfect New England destination for leaf peeping .

Downtown historical Portsmouth is very unique as it has colonial homes dating back to the 17th century. The most famous historical portion of the city is located in the south end. Strawbery Banke, an outdoor history museum, is New Hampshire’s oldest neighborhood to be settled by Europeans.

When visiting Portsmouth, be sure to check out all the small businesses downtown in an area of the city known as Market Square.

Portsmouth has more restaurants per capita than any other small town in the United States and is also home to dozens of charming boutiques. These boutiques come to life during the autumn with their seasonal decor and gift offerings.

Be sure to swing by Cup of Joe cafe for a cozy cup of salted caramel hot chocolate or their signature pumpkin spice latte. Lastly, the best thing about Portsmouth, NH is it’s a very walkable town, meaning no car is needed to explore this charming downtown this upcoming autumn season !

18. Eastern Sierra, California

lakeshore with waves yellow and orange trees with large cabins best places to visit in October USA

Average temp:  high 62, low 38 (varies)

The Eastern Sierra of California is a fabulous fall getaway destination in the USA. Fall color here is considered second only to New England , so you know you are in for a visual treat if you visit when the colors are at their peak!

From Lake Tahoe in the north to Bishop and Lone Pine in the south, the region is ablaze with foliage colors in the fall. You’ll be mesmerized by the show of yellow, oranges, and reds put on by aspens, willows and cottonwoods.

Taking a  Highway 395 road trip  is a great way to enjoy fall in the Eastern Sierra. If you prefer to have a base, Mammoth Lakes and Bishop are the largest towns in the area, and make for good bases from which to explore the beauty of the fall foliage all around you.

Doing scenic drives to enjoy the colors is the top thing to do in the fall. There are numerous paved and dirt roads you can drive. Both Inyo and Mono Counties offer the most beautiful drives. If you plan to drive the dirt roads, bring an appropriate vehicle.

The region is also known for its numerous spectacular lakes, so get out onto the water to enjoy the colors on the banks. Boating or kayaking is offered at many lakes. You can also go hiking, to view the colors up close: there are many legendary Eastern Sierra hikes from which to choose.

The Eastern Sierras are certainly one of the beset October vacations USA for lakes, mountains and hiking.

19. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia (another underrated destination on this list of beset places to travel in October in USA)

best October vacations usa view of mountains with green trees and red bushes on partly could day

Average temp:  high 58, low 39

You’ll hit gold if you visit Shenandoah National Park during the autumn . . . plus orange, red and burgundy.

Shenandoah’s trees shed their green attire. Autumn’s palette paints the forest rusty orange, reddish yellow, and burgundy. Woodland creatures abound, including black bears, deer, wild turkeys and bats.

Located less than two hours from Washington DC, Shenandoah National Park attracts hikers and drivers. It’s also a favorite for singles and families to spend a weekend. But book your reservations early for either the park campgrounds or the Skyland Resorts and Big Meadows hotels, as they routinely sell out for the weekend.

The best time to visit is Monday through Thursday as the 105-mile Skyline Drive can turn into a traffic jam in October at peak foliage times. Skyline Drive weaves its way across western Virginia. Speed limit is 35 mph.

Your best bet is to enter the enter at the Front Royal Entrance, stop at the Dickey Ridge Visitors Center to get a panoramic family portrait and then head down the road. Stop at a convenient parking lot so you can hike through forests, scale rocky ledges, explore Appalachian Trail stops and watch waterfalls.

Or you can spend 3 hours traveling the entire length of the park on Skyline Drive. It ends at Rockfish Gap Entrance Station, which is also the northern entrance to the  Blue Ridge Parkway .  Shenandoah National Park features 200,000 acres of protected land. Stony Man and Hawksbill peaks exceed 4,000 feet.

This beautiful fall destination is the perfect getaway for families, couples, solos or even a friends’ trip!

Fall vacation ideas

From big cities to wide open spaces, there’s still plenty more places to see on this mega list of the best place to visit in October in the US!

20. Austin, Texas

water falling over rock into pond on cloudy day

Average temp:  high 82, low 60

What a perfect city for a fall getaway! As someone who’s visited Austin a few times, I can honestly say October was my favorite! The weather is way better (i.e. way less hot) than during peak travel season.

Visiting Austin in the fall is the perfect time for outdoor adventures. There’s so much hiking in Austin, plus fall festivals, outdoor drive-in movies, pumpkin patches and more.

If you love being on the water, Lady Bird Lake is a great spot for kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. For easy hiking in Austin , consider McKinney Falls State Park, Barton Creek Greenbelt or the popular Mount Bonnell.

Of course there’s live music all over Austin, and let’s not forget the mural hunting, either. Whether you’re going for Insta-worthy shots or just happen to walk by them on your way to get epic cone at Amy’s Ice Cream, you’re bound to find some fun artwork in the downtown area.

October is the perfect time of year to spend a weekend in Austin .

21. Newport, Rhode Island

lighthouse along ocean at dusk best places to travel in October in USA

Average temp:  high 62, low 53

One of the best fall vacations in the US is definitely Newport, Rhode Island. The area has peak fall foliage throughout October.

It’s a small town located on Aquidneck Island and is surrounded by beautiful beaches and sea cliffs. During the fall, you can walk around and enjoy outdoor activities without the crowds.

The majority of people drive to Newport from somewhere on the east coast. If you’re visiting from further away, you can fly into Providence, Rhode Island, only 45 minutes away.

One of the best  things to do in Newport  is see the history of the area on the Cliff Walk. You can walk 3.5 miles past the Breakers, one of the Newport mansions, around sea cliffs, and past a few beaches.

Newport’s mansions are renowned for their architecture and history. Some of the mansions were constructed in the early 19th century. Walk around the Wharves (Bannister’s and Bowen’s) in the evening for a variety of food and shopping.

Newport has lots of delicious places to eat. For breakfast, head to Cru Cafe near the Audobain Museum – a great way to start the day is with their blueberry stuffed French toast!

Your New England vacation wouldn’t be complete without some seafood. At the Lobster Shack, you can find fresh seafood. You can stay at the Marriott Newport if you want to stay in the heart of Newport. The hotel is within walking distance of the wharves.

22. Aspen, Colorado (a top choice for best places to visit in October in the US)

Average temp:  high 58, low 31

Perhaps one of the most beautiful fall foliage settings is in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. The town of Aspen is perfect for a fall getaway because it’s surrounded by mountains and gorgeous aspen trees. I’m convinced it’s the among the best places to visit in October in USA.

Unlike some other destinations on this list which get vibrant reds and oranges during the fall, aspen trees turn a gorgeous yellow color. And when you get a mountainside full of them, it’s like eye candy!

A gorgeous day trip from Aspen is Maroon Bells Park. The feature is the mountain peak of Maroon Bells, which are surrounded by a lake and gorgeous aspen trees in the fall.

You could spend the day hiking the trails near the Maroon Bells if you love hiking and exploring the outdoors on foot. Note: you’ll want to plan ahead for this one, as reservations are now required to visit. Get your Maroon Bells reservations here .

Other things to do in Aspen include the Silver Queen Gondola, drive Independence Pass, visit the Ashcroft Ghost Town, and of course, shopping and dining in Aspen.

So whether you’re making the fall foliage in Aspen the focus of your trip or you’re combining it with an epic Colorado road trip , Aspen will surely be a highlight for a fall vacation!

23. New York City, New York

New York City skyline with pink sky and buildings lit up

Average temp:  high 64, low 50

New York City is amongst the best places to spend fall in the United States. The city is known for its beautiful fall colors and even a bit of Indian summer if you’re lucky.

New York can get very hot during the summer so the fall is the perfect time to enjoy the city without the heat. Fall is a lot more comfortable for sightseeing and you’ll love the views of the city.

If you’re traveling with older kids, this New York weekend itinerary with teens is the perfect mix of activities.

Head to the Highline Park which is a former elevated railroad track that has been converted into a walkway. It’s the perfect way to see the city without having to deal with the traffic and busy streets!

For an even better view of the city, you need to go all the way to the top of the One World Trade Center . This modern skyscraper is a must-see and truly the best place to take pictures of the city.

Afterward, head to the river for an evening cruise. There are tourist boats that will take you around the Hudson and East River.

However, for a more affordable option just take the ferry to Jersey or Staten Island. The ride won’t be as long but tickets only cost a few dollars and you’ll get to avoid the tourist crowds.

A trip to New York City is one of the best October vacations USA and one you’ll remember for a lifetime!

24. Zion National Park, Utah (another favorite on this list of best places to travel in October in USA)

Zion national park large canyon looking down with trees and road best places to visit in October USA

Average temp:  high 66, low 39

Zion National Park is simply stunning any time of year. However, it’s especially amazing to visit this national park in the fall.  With dwindled crowds and less intense weather to worry about, Zion is a great idea for a fall vacatio n!

If you want to hike the infamous Angels Landing, advanced planning is required, as the permit application process is during the summer. But, if you happen to get a permit for the hike, October is a phenomenal time to do it!

Of course, there are many things to do in Zion without hiking this challenging trail.  The much easier and yet equally rewarding Canyon Overlook Trail is a fun one, and can be completed for most fitness levels . At just a mile, this trail offers absolutely incredible views of the park!

A place for all ages, this park is magnificent for those young and old. An itinerary for Zion with kids includes other simple hikes like the Riverside Walk. Go further into the canyon by hiking The Narrows!

If you’re looking for a scenic drive in October, the Zion Mt. Carmel Highway Scenic Drive is incredible.  You won’t get the traditional vivid colors like some of the other destinations on this list of the best places to visit in October in US, but instead you’ll get amazing desert landscape and massive canyon views. So fun!

Be sure to pack plenty of water, layers for varying weather, hiking snacks and hiking gear like grippy hiking shoes , trekking poles and a hiking backpack .

Zion is absolutely one of the best places to go in October in USA, and a spot you’ll love!

25. Las Vegas, Nevada

best places in US to visit in October - Las Vegas strip with tall buildings at sunset

Average temp:  high 83, low 46

Las Vegas is the perfect destination to visit all year round but fall is a great time to visit. Temperatures begin to cool after the summer and so do the crowds. Plus, visiting mid-week will get you cheaper hotel rates, too.

Because temperatures are cooler, it means you can take advantage of some of the best outdoor attractions in the city, perfect for those visiting  Las Vegas for the first time .

Enjoy a Gondola ride at The Venetian, watch the Bellagio fountains or watch the volcano erupt outside The Mirage.

Rent a car or join a tour to visit the nearby national parks; Grand Canyon is the most popular day trip option from Las Vegas but October is a fantastic time to visit Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon and Bryce Canyon.

Alternatively, head to the unusual Magic Mountains or explore ‘The Neon Museum’ , a gallery of old signage from Vegas hotels of the past.

In the Bellagio hotel, you’ll find the gorgeous Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This is one of the best free things to do in Las Vegas and a great indoor activity to enjoy.

Each season, the gardens get transformed and the fall display is the most breathtaking. Expect oversized pumpkins, woodland creatures and tall, entertaining trees.

For more natural fall colours, head to one of the nearby parks ; Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, Paseo Verde Park and Gilcrease Orchard are top choices for this time of the year.

We recommend staying at The Cosmopolitan; it’s an elegant, stunning hotel and rates are normally super high but drop during the Autumn time.

26. Washington DC (Rock Creek Park)

Average temp:  high 69, low 46

Washingtonians and visitors don’t even have to hop in a car to enjoy peak fall foliage in a forest. Rock Creek Park is situated in the nation’s capital.

It’s the nation’s third oldest national park. Rock Creek Park was authorized in 1890.

Come October, the oaks, American beech and tulip trees suddenly change into the colors of the sunset—golden, orange and red. The 1,754-acre park features hikes for the hardcore as well as weekend adventurer.

If time permits, hike the two primary trails – Western Ridge Trail and Valley Trail. They run side by side. Imagine walking along a ladder laid on the ground.

Half-day hikes include Boulder Bridge, Milkhouse Ford, Rapids Bridge and Chestnut Oak/Mountain Laurels.

Or, devote a fall weekend to exploring Rock Creek Park . Tramp around the Civil War fortifications, watch interpreters at the Peirce Mill and Barn and visit the horses.

Bring a carrot or pull on your boots to ride a horse at the Rock Creek Park Horse Center, which is the only public riding facility in Washington DC.

Families will definitely want to visit the Nature Center and Planetarium. There are picnic areas scattered across Rock Creek Park, so fill a basket with ciders, sandwiches and apples.

27. Siesta Key, Florida (another favorite warm place to visit in October in USA)

Average temp:  high 85, low 67

A Florida beach may not come to the top of mind when thinking about the best October vacation destinations. However, it’s the perfect time to go! And what better way to end this list than one of the top-ranked beaches in the USA!

Siesta Key, Florida is home to turquoise water and some of the finest white powder sand you’ll ever step foot on. While you won’t see much fall foliage here, you’ll see wide open beaches and affordable prices, compared to the peak summer season and those looking for a winter escape.

Fall is the ideal time to visit Siesta Key. The weather is very comfortable and the water is still warm enough to enjoy.

From excellent restaurants, shopping, kayaking and beaching, there’s seriously so many things to do in Siesta Key. Whether you’re looking for a fall getaway as a couple, family, solo or friends trip, you’ll love spending time in Siesta Key!

While a bit unconventional in terms of fall colors, this is still one of the best places to visit in October in the USA.

28. New Orleans, Louisiana

city streets of New Orleans at night with blurred people and lights

Average temp:  high 81, low 62

New Orleans is one of the top warm places to visit in October in USA. It’s a fantastic walking city so it’s an ideal location to visit in the fall when the summer weather has cooled a bit and the crowds have left.

New Orleans is a very family friendly city , even in the French Quarter, or a great destination for a romantic getaway or a fun girls’ or boy’s weekend.

A trip to New Orleans wouldn’t be complete without exploring the French Quarter. Here you can aimlessly walk along cobblestone streets, poking your head into cute shops, or eating your way through delicious food.

One of the must-try treats is a beignet, a cross between a french pastry and a doughnut. They are easily found in the French Quarter.

If you’re curious about the history of this area, take one of the many walking tours that will ultimately take you to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Here you will learn all about the ghosts, the after-life and even voodoo, themes found all over New Orleans.

A fantastic experience is visiting the National WWII Museum, a short walk from the French Quarter.

This is an exceptional interactive museum that focuses on the United States’ role in Asia and Europe during WWII. It’s a thrilling experience that will grab the attention of anyone even those that aren’t normally interested in history or wars.

There are countless exciting activities to do within a short drive of New Orleans. You can visit a plantation, like Oak Alley Plantation, and learn about slavery and a difficult part of US history. The drive there is beautiful and exploring the grounds is a lovely thing to do in the fall.

In addition, you can take a swamp tour which is a lot of fun. You hop on a bayou boat and explore some of the many surrounding swamps filled with crocodiles and other wild creatures.

October is the perfect time of year to visit New Orleans due to the cooling weather and reasonable crowds.

10 top spots for solo travelers in winter (or any other time of year)

The idea of traveling alone can be daunting if you've never taken a solo trip before. Checking in for your outbound flight is easy – it's only when you arrive alone in an unfamiliar destination that it all becomes real. But any initial doubts are fleeting. By the time you've checked into your hotel and hit the streets looking for your first meal, nerves will already be giving way to the thrill of being somewhere new.

A major factor in mastering the art of solo travel is selecting the right destination. Whether you're embarking on an epic multicountry trip or taking an impulsive city break, some places are more suitable for a solo travel experience than others. There are destinations that are naturally suited to solitude, and destinations where travelers are naturally thrown together, making it easy to meet new people.

Best of all, there are solo travel destinations in every corner of the globe, so you can take a solo trip in the depths of winter as easily as you can at the height of summer. Here are 10 sure-fire destinations for lone travelers, organized by interest. Whether you’re into raves, relaxation, hiking or sightseeing, these spots are certain to get your solo travel adventure off on the right foot.

South America: best for solo adventures

With mountains to climb, rivers to raft, ancient ruins to uncover and jungles to explore, South America is the ultimate adventure destination. And the northern hemisphere's winter is South America's summer – the prime time to visit Patagonia and the Andes. From well-trodden paths in Argentina , Chile and Brazil to virgin jungle trails in Ecuador and Colombia , the continent has something for every kind of adventurer. You'll certainly never struggle for company on the trek to Machu Picchu !

Don’t let the continent's size daunt you – with easy border crossings and well-established traveler hubs, South America is ideal for solo overlanding. The well-worn Gringo Trail, which takes in the continent’s most popular destinations, ensures recurring rendezvous with fellow adventurers and ample opportunities to buddy up with travelers heading in the same direction. This, paired with the general warmth of local people and the continent’s premium hostel network, makes solo travel simple.

Epic solo travel experience : Mountain biking down Bolivia ’s infamous Death Road (the name is an exaggeration, in case you were worried) and debriefing with your fellow riders over a few beers afterward.

Pura Taman Saraswati temple in Ubud, Bali

Ubud, Indonesia: best for self-reflection

Whether you loved or loathed Elizabeth Gilbert’s seminal solo travel memoir Eat, Pray, Love , there’s no denying that Bali has a special magic. The island's artistic and spiritual center, Ubud , is where the author found love (and presumably ate and prayed) and it remains a wonderfully laid-back place for solo travelers to relax, reflect and recharge. And Bali is a year-round destination – summer is peak season, but the island has a quieter and calmer charm in winter.

Nestled among emerald rice fields ringed by mist-wrapped mountains, Ubud attracts throngs of solo travelers, meaning no probing glances if you arrive alone at a morning yoga class or ask for a table for one in one of the town’s salubrious vegetarian cafes. To really harness the healing power of Ubud (and for some serious solitude), check yourself into one of the many health retreats that dot the verdant hills around town.

Epic solo travel experience : Getting up super early before the heat climbs to join a holistic class – you find lessons in everything from yoga and meditation, and you can follow up with a massage at a tried and tested spa such as Taksu Spa .

Young people dancing at a Berlin club

Berlin, Germany: best for nightlife

Some say you are more likely to get into Berghain , the most famous nightclub in Berlin , if you arrive alone. Whether or not that’s the case, the rumor demonstrates the German capital’s natural affinity for solo travelers. Legions of solo citybreakers are drawn by Berlin's deserved reputation as one of the friendliest, most inclusive cities in Europe, and by its famous nightlife.

Berlin is one of the best places in Europe to party, offering a collection of colossal clubs and graffiti-spattered beer gardens, but going clubbing is just one of many things to do in Berlin. Thought-provoking history surrounds you from the moment you arrive, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Holocaust Memorial , while quirky cafes, cool boutiques, weekend flea markets and a growing food-truck scene provide more leisurely delights. Berlin is an easy place to wander alone, or join a walking tour for some company.

Epic solo travel experience : Heading out to a bar or nightclub and seeing where the night takes you. For some guided imbibing, join a beer tour with Brewer's Berlin Tours or Berlin Craft Beer Experience .

An elephant passes a safari jeep in Kenya

East Africa: best for a group tour

Have you always dreamed of viewing gorillas in the jungles of Rwanda , meeting a Maasai chief in Kenya  or spotting the “Big Five” in Tanzania , but were daunted by the logistics of tackling East Africa independently? A group tour can simplify the experience of visiting this stunning region of the world, and provide a buffer for the sometimes challenging experiences Africa can throw at first-timers.

East Africa’s tourism infrastructure is well developed and traveling solo in most countries here is quite achievable (particularly in Kenya and Tanzania), but joining a group tour means you can bundle together a string of big game-viewing safaris in multiple countries, without getting hit by additional lone traveler charges or facing the daunting prospect of arranging multiple tours and transport.

Best of all, tours in these bucket-list destinations attract a diverse group of travelers, meaning you’re much less likely to be the only solo traveler sandwiched between canoodling couples, or the only 20-something in a coach full of empty-nesters.

Epic solo travel experience : Catching the great migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya – an almost Lion King -esque parade of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and predators.

View from the walkway on The Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Singapore: best for a solo stopover

With all manner of cultural attractions to explore, a growing collection of hostels and guesthouses, loads of free things to do , and one of the world’s best public transport systems (including excellent airport links), there are few more stress-free solo travel experiences than landing at Singapore 's award-winning Changi airport on a tropical afternoon.

Whether you choose to amble with an audio guide through the Chinatown Heritage Centre , gawp at the otherworldly Gardens by the Bay , plunge into a lavish rooftop pool, or join the hordes feasting in Singapore's hawker food courts , the city is perfectly suited to solo travel. An added bonus is the city's cosmopolitan attitude – locals don't bat an eyelid at the daily influx of international arrivals, and there are few hassles and scams to worry about.

Epic solo travel experience : Checking out the cozy cafes and quirky boutiques in the gentrified 1930s housing estate of Tiong Bahru .

Interior of Rome's Colosseum with a crowd of tourists

Rome, Italy: best for culture

From ancient icons such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum to the towering masterpiece of Renaissance architecture that is St Peter’s Basilica , Rome ’s cityscape is a kaleidoscopic canvas of artistic flair, architectural wonderment and historical marvels. Whether you’re visiting for two days or two months, there's so much to see that there's little risk of becoming bored.

Though English is not as widely spoken as in some European nations, it’s hard to feel lonely among the 14 million other tourists who visit this cultural hub each year. And solo dining means you only have to worry about keeping one palate happy in Rome's fabulous restaurants . But don’t pack too much into your itinerary, as Rome rewards relaxation; mingling with strangers over a glass of vino at sunset is an essential pastime in The Eternal City.

Epic solo travel experience : Visiting St Peter’s Basilica and walking the 7km (4.3 miles) of artwork-filled halls that comprise the Vatican Museums .

A young woman orders food from a food truck in Portland, Oregon.

Portland, Oregon: best city break

One of the USA 's hippest hubs, Portland has all the cultural advantages of a major metropolis, but the down-home intimacy of a small town. This affable attitude reverberates in the town’s urban wineries, microbreweries and coffee shops, where conversation flows quicker than the drinks can be poured. And with its patchwork of small, friendly neighborhoods , it's easy to discover this easy-going city one district at a time.

There’s more to this bastion of counterculture than its love of a good chinwag, with a host of whimsical attractions highlighting its quirky streak, from a museum dedicated to vacuum cleaners to an urban herd of goats. It’s also a cinch to navigate, with good public transport and a popular bike-share scheme. And while Portland is famous for its artisan restaurants, a more sociable – and undeniably more fun – way to dine is at the city’s 500-or-so street food carts.

Epic solo travel experience : Exploring the Alberta Arts District; for the company of fellow art enthusiasts, time your visit to coincide with the Last Thursday art walk .

A group of tourists prepare ingredients during a Thai cooking lesson in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, Thailand: best for food

It's a close-run thing, but for solo foodie travel, one destination stands above all others for travelers who view the world through the prism of a knife and fork. The capital of northern Thailand – and once the center of an independent kingdom – Chiang Mai offers the entire Thai package in one compact location: stellar food, rich culture, ancient ruins, responsible elephant encounters , relaxed nightlife and an easy-going traveler scene that's easy to plug into.

Every time of day is snack time in Chiang Mai. From the city's impressive northern Thai restaurants to its fun-filled and frenetic night markets and hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving the city's famous kow soi soup, the city always has a fork or spoon in hand. What makes Chiang Mai especially suited to solo travelers is its collection of cooking schools – ideal places to meet new people and learn how to cook up a perfect bowl of phat thai , green curry or hot and sour tom yam soup.

Epic solo travel experience : Learning to cook Thai food, of course! Most courses start with a market trip so you can learn to identify local ingredients before you start pounding herbs and spices to make your own curry paste ( Small House Chiang Mai is one recommended school).

Palm trees and colorful houses line a beach in Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker, Belize: best for an island escape

Enchanting atolls aren’t reserved for honeymooners. Pastel-hued, car-free Caye Caulker has always been a great place for solo travelers thanks to its compact size and easy-going, backpacker-friendly vibe, which draws a relaxed, international crowd in search of a less commercialized slice of paradise.

It’s easy to lose days lounging at The Split , the island’s premier beach, but there are plenty of other activities on offer, from snorkeling and diving on teeming reefs to kayaking to lesser-visited parts of the island while keeping a beady eye out for crocodiles.

Join other travelers at local reggae bars during the afternoon happy hour before sampling Creole-style street food come nightfall. What's arguably the greatest blessing of solo travel? You don’t have to share your shrimp and swordfish dinner!

Epic solo travel experience : Snorkeling or diving in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve , which teems with turtles and small sharks.

East Coast Australia: best for road-tripping

It would actually be hard to explore the East Coast of Australia alone. So many travelers follow the snaking stretch of road that runs from Sydney to Cairns that solitude is often harder to find than companionship. For travelers in search of natural wonders, excellent infrastructure, abundant tours and group activities and raucous late-night revelry, there are few places to match it.

But it’s not just the good-time vibe that makes this stretch of coastline so spectacular. The classic road trip route is studded with bucket-list attractions, from lolling on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach to rambling through the ancient Daintree Rainforest or blowing bubbles on the Great Barrier Reef . Consider renting a car to explore – the most memorable moments will likely come from interactions with locals in coastal surf towns and one-pub villages in the Outback an hour or two inland from the coast.

Epic solo travel experience : Joining a tour with the East Coast's Indigenous people. Tours led by guides from Aboriginal communities will show you a less-seen side to this well-explored land.

October is the month when the temperature begins to drop and the colors in our world begin to change to orange, red, yellows, and browns. A welcome sight, the season of fall is upon us. Now is the time to indulge in everything from apple picking to pumpkin spiced lattes and enjoy scenic fall road trips.

It’s also the perfect time to travel in the US. With cooler temps many places that are too hot during the summer months are now the ideal destination. It’s also a great time to look for lower prices and travel deals.

This list of best places to travel in October is designed to help give you some fantastic fall vacation ideas. So, let’s get into it.

25 Best places to visit in USA in October.

October is the most beautiful time of the year to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway. No matter where you begin the trip, you’ll be in for an absolute treat.

Throughout the month the leaves along this beautiful landscape are in the process of changing, so it’s okay to visit at the start, middle, or end of the month.

The fall season marks lower, comfortable temperatures and not quite as many visitors as the summer peak season.

By mid-October the foliage is in peak form and the best time for leaf-peepers to explore this gorgeous landscape.

The park has so much to offer folks who love the great outdoors. Acadia is the perfect place for fall hikes or bicycling on the carriage roads.

Pay a visit to the Zilker Botanical Garden to walk the trails featuring gorgeous flowers in themed gardens, waterfalls, and a dinosaur!

Perfect autumn beach destination: Europe, a Mediterranean island, but so far south-east it has the climate of the Middle East. Enter Cyprus. A rich history and eclectic culture, a blissful climate and fantastic beaches. Away from the dramatically beautiful coastline and the beachfront hotels is the lesser-explored interior, the Troodos mountains – the Cotswolds of Cyprus – with their vineyards and hillside villages and friendly tavernas.

Where to stay: Anassa is one of our favourite hotels in Europe, particularly for families. For a more adult stay, try the glossy beachside Amavi in Paphos. For more options, see our pick of the best hotels in Cyprus .

Los Cabos, Mexico

Temperature: 33°C high; 23°C low Season: dry Flight time from UK: 15 hours 20 minutes Time difference: GMT-7

Beachy Eden ‘Cabo’ is all about switching off in style. This sun-drenched spot is always hot hot hot: where smart hotels such as the One&Only have restaurants by elite chefs such as Jean-Georges Vongerichten and host birthday parties for starry guests including Jennifer Aniston. In winter, all and sundry come for the weather (it rains in summer). Praise be for October, then, when the mercury’s high but occupancy low. Los Cabos is actually two towns at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula – Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. The latter retains more traditional charm, and has the chicest hotels: mid-century fans will love Thompson’s The Cape. Don’t miss Puerto Raiz in San José del Cabo, an outdoor foodie hub with two restaurants and a distillery, set within 13 acres of orchards and gardens. All produce is sourced onsite – including for the distillery’s spirits and cocktails – while cheese, meat and seafood come from local purveyors in neighbouring Baja towns such as La Paz and Todos Santos.

Where to stay: One&Only Palmilla , an elegant retreat and one of the best hotels in Los Cabos .

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

Temperature: 25°C high; 20°C low Season: winter Flight time from UK: 12 hours Time difference: GMT+3

It's springtime in Mauritius in October; the weather is warming up after a long, warm winter. But it's not yet humid or rainy. Huge Indian Ocean-sized flowers are bursting in bloom and animal hoots and chattering come riffling out of the rainforest. There’s not a lot you can do about the carbon-belching flight to Mauritius, but, once you’re there, you can opt for a sustainable stay. Mauritius Conscious Travel offers solar-powered glamping with vegetarian meals sourced from an onsite garden, plus motor-free day trips by sea kayak, mountain bike and climbing rope. If anyone offers you a trip to Mauritius at any other time of year, we urge you not to turn it down. But October is definitely a goodie.

Where to stay: For a private stay, Maradiva is a smart all-villa resort. At Shangri-La Le Touessrok , guests can enjoy exclusive access to a private island. See more of the top hotels in Mauritius .

Provence, France

Temperature: 20°C high; 12°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 2 hours by plane; 6.5 hours by Eurostar Time difference: GMT+1

Everybody goes to Provence in summer. But for food, for tranquillity, for scenery, October is deeply delicious, its vineyards a vibrant ochre, morning mists shrouding the glades of the Luberon at dawn. Autumn is the season of wine and truffles and food festivals, when Provence’s slow-paced villages are uncrowded except for locals, markets heaped with harvest spoils. And the weather is still largely warm and dry – ideal T-shirt weather for country walks and bike rides.

Where to stay: Hôtel Crillon Le Brave is a classic favourite; while Coquillade has just reopened after a facelift, a restored Provençal village in the Luberon, with spoiling suites, a destination spa, and its own vineyards.

Málaga, Spain

Temperature: 24°C high; 15°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 2 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT+1

On Spain ’s sunniest costa, Málaga’s exuberant young crowd has injected a fresh energy into this little seaside city, earning it a reputation for being a pocket-sized Barcelona , where you’ll find sizzling art and food scenes and late-summer heat. Its charming old town, though small, is packed with buzzy little restaurants and boutiques selling artisan-made fashion and homewares; there’s a museum dedicated to Picasso and a theatre run by Antonio Banderas, both Málaga natives. More modern kicks are found at the regenerated port with its Rubik’s-Cube-like Pompidou Centre. And why not explore Málaga carbon-free – Urban Bicycles rents out the most beautiful handmade mint-green bikes for cruising along the promenade, which runs from the city centre to the beach bars north of the city.

Where to stay: At the 18th-century Palacio Solecio , which opened in 2020 after a full overhaul to become the city’s most beautiful hotel, and the latest in Pablo Carrington’s stable (along with Formentera’s Gecko Hotel & Beach Club and Mallorca’s Cap Rocat).

The Greek islands, Greece

Temperature: 24°C high; 16°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 3 hours 40 minutes Time difference: GMT+2

The more southerly of the small Greek islands – the Dodecanese and the Cyclades – are still hot and sunny well into October – and there are some sensational beaches on which to enjoy it. Rhodes, with the lovely cobbled Lindos and parties in its ancient ruins. Milos , which has some of the best beaches in the Greek Islands. We love unspoilt Symi, Nisyros and Patmos ; while Santorini and Mykonos are eternal big-hitters. Pick any one, they're all lovely. Or go island-hopping around them all. Just remember: cruise ships are an issue on the Greek islands, disgorging thousands into small port towns and diverting visitors to just a small number of shops and restaurants. If you’re island-hopping, opt to do it by sailboat instead: this is not only more environmentally friendly, but smaller vessels can take you to more off-the-beaten-track beaches, coves and towns.

Where to stay: We have a long list of the best Greek island hotels to choose from. In terms of the newest openings to know about, Once in Mykonos Luxury Resort is a chilled hideaway for young families and dapper partygoers. Another name to note is Oku Kos , which effortlessly combines local culture with relaxation.

Japanese Alps, Japan

Temperature: 20°C high; 9°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 13 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT +9

The masses might go mad for cherry blossom season, but arguably Japan ’s most arresting sight is its Alps in autumn. Vibrant reds, oranges and yellows sprawl across the ranges, reflected in jade-green lakes and rivers. Hiking trails get very busy, but the outstanding vistas more than make up for it, and the ever-organised Japanese excel at high-altitude mountain huts, where you can get a private room and bento box-style dinner. Afterwards, the spa towns around Takayama are adept at soothing aching limbs. Upmarket ryokans, such as Fukuji Onsen’s Yumoto Choza, offer both outdoor and indoor hot-spring baths, fine-dining kaiseki dinners and gorgeous traditional rooms with tatami mats and sliding paper screens.

Off the coast of Western Australia , the country’s most pristine coral reef has become known as a marine superhighway. Diving and snorkelling trips are technicolour dreams, teeming with fish, turtles and sharks, and Ningaloo Reef is one of only a handful of places in the world where you can swim alongside whale sharks and humpback whales, when they journey alongside the reef on their on their way to feeding grounds in the Antarctic. Or take a boat out as they breach, dramatically, out of the water around you.

Where to stay: Guests can walk straight from their safari tent at Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef – the only hotel in the Cape Range National Park – into the marine-rich waters of the reef. The tented camp’s local guides will unearth the wonders of sea and bush, and arrange experiences such as swimming with whales.

Temperature: 14–26ºC Season: winter Flight time from UK: 13h 30m (one change) Time difference: GMT+2

Marking the turn of winter into spring, October is a wonderful month to visit this storied Indian Ocean island. The weather is dry and warm, the nights are cool, the jacarandas are in bloom, and it is egg-laying season for turtles and birthing season for lemurs – poster girls for Madagascar’s unique and diverse indigenous wildlife, which is found in abundance from the country’s ancient forests to its dreamy white-sand beaches.

Where to stay: On cast away fantasy Nosy Ankao off Madagascar’s north coast, Miavana is the best eco-lodge in the country: a five-star private-island resort dedicated to conservation, with expert guides to take guests lemur-and turtle-watching, fishing and diving. Abercrombie & Kent offers the 13-night Classic Madagascar trip from £5,960pp.

Darjeeling, India

Temperature: 17°C high; 10°C low Season: winter Flight time from UK: 13 hours 20 minutes Time difference: GMT +5.30

This month marks the end of monsoon season, and an excellent time to visit India’s most famous hill station as the rain and fog peel back to reveal extravagant Himalayan views. Top of the list should be a sunrise visit to Tiger Hill, to see the frosted peaks of the world’s third-highest mountain, Mount Kanchenjunga, bathed in a peachy glow. The effect is said to be best in mid-October; keep your eyes peeled and you’ll even spot Everest on the left. Other than that, it’s a relaxing time tasting the ‘Champagne of teas’ at local plantations, riding the UNESCO-listed steam railway (affectionately known as ‘the toy train’) and taking afternoon tea in Victorian-style heritage hotels.

Where to stay : Ging Tea House is among the oldest tea estates in the region, from which you can take lovely guided hikes. Or see more hotels across India for gorgeous monsoon views . Do remember that water scarcity is a huge problem in Darjeeling, so look for hotels with responsible practices around conservation (such as rainwater harvesting), and be mindful of how much you use.

Vienna, Austria

Temperature : 15°C high; 5°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 2hrs 25 minutes Time difference: GMT+1

Though Austria’s capital is better known for grand imperial palaces and an even grander musical legacy (Mozart and Beethoven), one of the city’s finest assets is its urban vineyards. Forget a designated driver, just take the tram to the pretty outer suburbs, where rows of vines spread across grassy slopes, as skyline views and the Danube stretch out below. October marks the harvest, when the vineyards are at their greenest and winemakers open up their operations to enquiring minds (and mouths). There are several designated wine trails to follow, where vintners hand out samples from both cellar and kitchen, and autumn’s mild, sunny days are ideally suited to frolics in the fields. Where to stay: Park Hyatt Vienna , a magnificently grand stay – one of our favourite hotels in Vienna .

Austin, Texas

Temperature: 27°C high; 14°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 10 hours 25 minutes Time difference: GMT-6

Austin’s other festival happens in October: Austin City Limits , in Zilker Park – an altogether easier shebang to negotiate than SXSW if you’re not in the industry. And autumn brings glorious weather to Texas – blue skies, mild warm days, low humidity – which is just right for a road trip out of the USA’s coolest, weirdest state capital across the high Texan desert to find historical charm in San Antonio and more weirdness, along with knockout art and sensational food, in Marfa. Rent bikes at Lance Armstrong’s Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop , fired up by a farm-sourced, single-origin, Fair-Trade, shade-grown, home-roasted coffee from the shop’s Juan Pelota Cafe.

Where to stay: The Texas-based Bunkhouse group has places to stay in Austin and San Antonio, including Austin’s  Carpenter Hotel  in a former union hall near Zilker Park and beautiful  Hotel Havana  in a riverside house in San Antonio, while avant-garde hotelier Liz Lambert, a true original, is behind the out-there trailer park  El Cosmico  in Marfa.

Churchill, Canada

Temperature: 1°C high; -5°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 21 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT -6

Better to be a visitor than a resident in Arctic Churchill, which in autumn earns the dubious honour of becoming “polar bear capital of the world”. As the surrounding Hudson Bay freezes, these massive mammals – male polar bears can weigh as much as 10 men – invite themselves over, in search of seals. Great news for wildlife watchers, who can board specially reinforced tundra buggies to get up close to earth’s largest land carnivore; not so great for the people of Churchill, who are apt to find polar bears hanging around like delinquent youths at the local bus stop. The largest groups gather in October. Consider a tundra buggy safari with Frontiers North Adventures , respected locally for thoughtful initiatives including creating the town’s first recycling programme; employing staff and sourcing supplies from within the community; and investing in causes such as Churchill’s Canadian Junior Rangers and non-profit conservation outfit Polar Bears International .

Atacama Desert, Chile

Temperature: 25°C high; 5°C low Season: spring Flight time from UK: 21hrs Time difference: GMT -4

The world’s driest desert isn’t the hottest, but it is perhaps the most starkly beautiful – so Mars-like that actual Mars rovers are brought here for test drives. Red canyons and sand dunes, whooshing geyers and steaming volcanoes, salt flats and hot springs stretch out as far as the eye can see. It’s largely devoid of a drinking water supply or any natural shade, so there are few settlements, which means no pollution, explaining why it has also lately garnered buzz as a premier stargazing destination. The fabulously remote Explora Atacama, for example, has a private observatory as well as a spa and bespoke-bred horses. October, shoulder season, offers a holy trinity: empty vistas unspoiled by fellow visitors, lower room rates and temperate daytime conditions. Don’t ignore the highland hamlets and historic sites in the Atacama region – spending your tourist dollars here helps to sustain local and indigenous communities and preserve their heritage. Where to stay: Hotel Wara , a spacious and rambling escape in the desert. Explora Atacama , meanwhile, is a gorgeously rugged ranch turned spoiling escape, with a spa, an observatory and an exemplary restaurant.

3. Rome

Rome, Italy

Temperature: 22°C high; 12°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 2 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT+1

Tutti Italia is on holiday all month long in August. You might think that would make Rome relatively quiet, with every Roman gone to the beach, but it's not; it's unbearably busy and unbearably hot. July, too, is unbearably busy and hot; so is much of June. May and September used to be quieter, but lots of people realised that and now they are busy too. Winter can be a bit miserable, though Christmas is quite busy. So October, by default, becomes our month of choice to visit Rome , when it is less busy, still lovely and warm, and you can selfie at the Trevi Fountain in that magic late-summer sunlight without quite so many tourists ruining the view.

Where to stay: Hotel de' Ricci , a retro-cool hotel in an artsy neighbourhood and one of the best hotels in Rome .

The Lake District, UK

Temperature: 10°C high; 2°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 3 hours by train from London Time difference: GMT+0

Even when it rains – and it does rain here, a lot – the Lake District must be one of the most wistfully beautiful places in the world. Never more (many would say) than in fiery autumn, when mist and woodsmoke mix in the morning and good days are pin-sharp, bright with red-gold trees and bracken covering the fells. If only someone could capture such beauty in words.

Where to stay: Foodies will love the Michelin-starred restaurant at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House . For a quant village stay, check in to The Black Bull Inn . For a private stay, we love the look of this cosy Airbnb near Ullswater . For more, check out our list of the best Airbnbs in the Lake District .

As above, except with less rain, and leafpeepers (for that is what they call them here) tend to drive to look at the Fall foliage rather than put on walking boots. Combine the fiery Vermont countryside with a Boston city break.

Where to stay: Castle Hill Inn , the best places to watch the boats become silhouettes against the Atlantic Ocean, one of the best things to do on Rhode Island .

Temperature: 35°C high; 16°C low Season: dry Flight time from UK: 14 hours Time difference: GMT+1

You can make a convincing case for Botswana as the world’s greatest safari destination. The government’s “low impact, high experience” mandate makes for more intimate camps; Serengeti-like jeep scrums just aren’t a thing. Then there’s the Okavango Delta, an immaculate wetland wilderness teeming with life. (Conservation is so successful that South Africa relocates endangered rhino here.) Tourism tails off in October because of rising heat, but the flooded Okavango is water-cooled, while a lack of vegetation – munched over the dry winter – puts game-viewing at its peak. Prices drop towards the end of the month, and the new, solar-powered Qorokwe Camp by Wilderness Safaris, sitting on its own lagoon, is a slick pick. A bush walk with the San – the indigenous people of the Kalahari desert – conserves their culture in more ways than one, fostering both education for visitors and employment for the San. But do your research before booking: some tours can be less than respectful. Where to stay: Xigera Safari Lodge , a lodge putting a swish edge on sustainability, or read about the best Botswana safari holidays in the Okavango Delta .

Seville, Spain

A hot destination right now, the winds of change are finally blowing through old Seville – and October is the best time to visit for fresher air, when the winding streets are a little less sultry but no less romantic. Culturally there's a lot happening, from pop-up galleries and cafés to a gastronomic revolution.

Where to stay: For a taste of truly regal extravagance, book in to Hotel Alfonso XIII . For more, see our edit of the best hotels in Seville .

Temperature: 29°C high; 24°C low Season: summer Flight time from UK: 18 hours Time difference: GMT-11

With the summer crowds gone, low rainfall and mellowing prices before the winter holidays, what better time to head for Hawaii? Of course, there’s more to the archipelago than Big Island: Kauai for secret swimming holes and charming local bars; Oahu for top food and surf; and even Maui, with its ever-popular 30 miles of beach, has some hush-hush stuff up its sleeve – seek out the rural artists’ community at Makawao, or go on an agri-visit to Surfing Goat Dairy, a farm on the slopes of a volcanic crater. Given the amount of importing that goes on here – and that goes for hotels, restaurants and shopping chains as much as groceries – shopping local helps the Hawaiian people maintain an identity that is uniquely their own. Buying locally made fashion not only guarantees designs that are true to the culture, but supports master weavers and artisans: see the likes of Hana Hou (Big Island); Native Intelligence (Maui); Na Mea Hawaii (Oahu); and Ohana Shop (Kauai). Where to stay: Four Seasons Resort Lana'i , an alluring escape.

Perugia, Italy

Temperature: 18°C high; 8°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK : 2 hours 35 minutes Time difference: GMT+1

It’s not difficult to get excited about a place that holds an annual 10-day festival celebrating the world’s favourite sweet treat. Every October, Umbria’s capital in central Italy hosts cooking classes, exhibitions and (most importantly) tasters to celebrate the town’s most famous export – chocolate. It’s a diabetic’s purgatory, a sweet lover’s dream and a local staple. The Belgians have their pralines, Oaxaca has its drinking chocolate and the Swiss have Lindt – but Perugia is home to baci. The word translates as “kisses”, and the story goes that a young chocolatier created a special sweet for her paramour, wrapped in a love letter and – naturally – sealed with a kiss. Today, baci somewhat seductively resemble a nipple, and still come wrapped in romantic proverbs and poems. Perugia is also a town rich in history and art, set on a hilltop peppered with medieval aqueducts, curious cobbled staircases and views that appear out of nowhere.

The Galapagos Islands

Temperature: 25°C high; 19°C low Season: dry Flight time from UK: 13 hours Time difference: GMT-7

Out of this world all year round – there is no other wildlife like this on earth. However for maximum nature shows, it's peak season for fish and birds from June until the end of October in the Galápagos Islands . It's also when there's least rain. Wait until October and most of the other tourists will have gone back to work; plus the sea should have warmed up a bit in case you were thinking of taking a dip (and you should) to get up close to the phenomenally varied marine life. And while most visitors explore the Galápagos via small cruise ships, it is possible to book land-based tours, where you’ll stay on several islands and take small- boat excursions by day. This means eating at locally run restaurants, visiting land-based businesses (such as farms), and exploring the human history of the islands, too.

Where to stay: Finch Bay , one of the island’s longest-standing hotels as recommended in our expert's guide to the Galapagos .

Taipei, Taiwan

Temperature: 27°C high; 22°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 13 hours 30 minutes Time difference: GMT+7

Yet to draw the trend-obsessed like Tokyo , or shoot to relevance like Seoul , the Taiwanese capital is a broadly undiscovered, just-as-thrilling blend of both. From Taoist temples to record-setting skyscrapers, flashy shopping malls to throbbing, neon-lit night markets, it’s a fascinating cultural smash: all cheap street-side beers and grilled cuttlefish on a stick one minute; a bonkers club with a waterfall on the dance floor the next. Towards the end of October the rain stops, humidity dials down and skies clear, so you can take in the glitzy cityscape, best viewed from the 230ft Miramar Ferris Wheel, or the 89th floor of once-world's-tallest tower, Taipei 101.

Where to stay: There’s more bling at the W , where room categories have names like Fabulous and Extreme Wow.

Temperature: 31°C high; 25°C low Season: summer Flight time from UK: 12 hours Time difference: GMT+6

October is the beginning of dry season in Vietnam’s north and south, where monumental natural spectacles and buzzing city scenes both abound. Up top, hill station Sapa is the gateway to misty treks; the capital Hanoi is all chaos, condensed-milk coffees on low plastic stools and some of the best food you’ll ever taste. Down at the bottom, the Mekong Delta is a whole world bobbing on canals and streams; and Ho Chi Minh City is where the bohos go – don’t miss The Café Apartment, a nine-storey block stuffed with fairy-lit mini-boutiques and craft coffee stores. High season creeps up in November, so it’s also the last chance for lower rates. In Sapa, the most popular activities are trekking the terraced slopes and staying with hill tribes, and the best way to do both is with Sapa O’Chau . This social enterprise, founded by a single mother from the Black Hmong tribe, is a nonprofit homestay and trekking service, which puts funds back into the community: improving village schools, providing English classes to Hmong guides and street vendors, distributing winter clothes to local children, and more. Adelaide, Australia

Temperature: 21°C high; 12°C low Season: spring Flight time from UK: 21 hours Time difference: GMT+8:30

Sydney and Melbourne – so yesterday. It’s Adelaide’s time to shine, and how. The wine-producing Adelaide Hills had long overshadowed South Australia’s coastal capital, but a vital new food scene is changing all that. And thank the Hills’ surrounding farms for fresh finds that Adelaide’s urban rivals can only covet. All that natural bounty is paired with October’s crisp air, as the beginnings of spring slough off winter’s edge. If you fancy getting off-grid, CABN has a number of tiny houses tucked into the South Australian wilderness, less than an hour’s drive from Adelaide’s CBD. These solar-powered minimalist escapes also have composting loos and rainwater catchment, and sit close to conservation parks, heritage bushland and wine country.

Mendocino, California

Temperature: 14°C high; 12°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 11 hours Time difference: GMT-8

October is when Northern California finally gets its act together, dropping the fog and chilly winds that never fail to surprise under-dressed tourists, opting instead for more Cali-appropriate shimmering sunshine and bright, blue skies. It’s also the ideal time to make the road trip to one of the state’s best-kept secrets, Mendocino County: a thrilling coastal drive 160 miles north of San Francisco, with enough dramatic sea cliffs, lanky redwoods and crashing ocean to put Big Sur to shame. Mendocino town looks like a slice of New England picked up and dropped off on a California headland, and recalls its 1950s bohemian heyday with a surplus of art galleries and no chains. That hippie spirit also lives on in the Mendocino wine region, known for the country’s biggest haul of organic vines. Try a true taste of Mendocino at Harbor House Inn , where the 25-seat dining room hosts an ever-changing, hyper-local menu that has been awarded the county’s first-ever Michelin star. Everything you eat here has been sourced from within a 30-mile radius.

Where to stay: Half an hour up the coast, The Inn at Newport Ranch is a place of wild extremes. Or see more of the best hotels in California for more ideas.

Dubai United Arab Emirates

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Temperature: 35°C high; 24°C low Season: winter Flight time from UK: 7 hours Time difference: GMT+3

Summer is when Dubai hibernates: as the desert city heats up to 40 degrees Celsius and beyond, even skyscrapers seem to perspire, the al-fresco fun packs up and everyone bolts for the AC-cooled inside. But in October Dubai springs to new life: beach clubs reopen, restaurant terraces are jammed and a dip in the Arabian Gulf no longer feels like swimming in a scorching-hot spring. Temperatures in the high 20s also make a desert excursion less like an episode of Bear Grylls ’ Born Survivor. Enough of the world’s biggests and tallests? Poke into the boutiques, galleries and Foster + Partners-designed buildings of the freshly minted Dubai Design District. Where to stay: Al Maha , an exclusive desert haven set within a conservation reserve. See more of our favourite hotels in Dubai for more ideas.

Bhutan

Temperature: 19°C high; 8°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 10 hours Time difference: GMT+5

The remote Himalayan kingdom known for its Gross National Happiness Index, pristine peaks and precariously perched Tiger’s Nest Monastery, makes a point of exclusivity – foreign visitors face a hefty daily tariff for the privilege of stepping within its borders. The payoff, of course, is the rare purity of a nation largely untouched by the outside world. Given that much of Bhutan’s pleasures are found in hikes to sacred mountains and remote temples, the cool mountain air and clear skies of October make it a prime time to visit. The Six Senses Bhutan – comprising five different lodges – adds a touch of luxury to some of the country’s most scenic valleys and forests. The daily tariff ensures that Bhutan only deals in sustainable tourism – limiting visitors in this way protects the kingdom’s culture, land and traditions. But you can make sure the money you spend goes directly to the Bhutanese you meet by shopping in local markets, eating in neighbourhood restaurants and sleeping in heritage properties or homestays.

Perhaps the most captivating country in the Middle East, Jordan has an embarrassment of spectacular things to see: ancient and awe-inspiring Petra, the Roman city of Jerash, the Dead Sea, the Red Sea, great desertscapes where you can stay overnight in a Bedouin camp. In October there are still bright sunny days that light the rock of Petra up rose-red; but it is cool enough to journey into the Valley of the Moon on camel or horseback by day, and warm enough to sleep out under the starry sky by night. Don’t miss the opportunity to camp out in Wadi Rum. A co-operative of Bedouin tribes runs the majority of trekking and camping trips, and they rely on tourism to hold onto their traditional way of life.

The Turkish Coast

Temperature: 26°C high; 13°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 4 hours Time difference: GMT+2

Turkey's beautiful Aegean and Bosphorus coasts are still hot in October, the beaches uncluttered by holidaymakers. There's a distinctly Greek feel to these regions, and between the coves you'll find dreamy boutique hotels that are good value for money out of season, and unexpectedly boho fishing villages. Alaçati is one of our favourites; and picturesque Selimiye, an hour from Dalaman, tipped (by us) as the new Kalkan. Likewise Istanbul – too prickly, too hot in summer – is more pleasant to explore out of season.

Where to stay: Mandarian Oriental in Bodrum , a glamorous, starry beach base. Alaçati is a good spot for small boutique hotels – a better bet for eco-friendliness than a sprawling coastal resort. The Stay Warehouse is a super-cool, adults-only converted brewery built from regionally sourced, recycled wood, bricks and glass, and the restaurant serves platters of local fruit, olives and cheese.

Spain Balearic Islands Menorca view of Macarella beach

Temperature: 23°C high; 16°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 2 hours 25 Time difference: GMT+1

Mallorca and Ibiza get the lion’s share of the Balearic spotlight. But little Menorca is just as beautiful. In the summer, this tiny island’s roads are largely closed to private vehicles to avoid congestion and protect the natural environment – especially around the most beautiful beaches. By October, things have calmed down, and most summer tourists have left. More fool them: Menorca is still warm and sunny well into the autumn, and the sea – warmed by the Mediterranean sun all summer – is still pleasant to swim in. In shoulder season, you can explore at your own pace.

Where to stay: at Menorca Experimental , a handsome, pared-back hideout from the Parisian Experimental Group, or at Christine Bedfor , a smart townhouse in Mahon.

Isola Bella in Taormina Sicily

Temperature: 21°C high; 14°C low Season: autumn Flight time from UK: 3 hours 20 Time difference: GMT+1

Sicily’s long been drawing Italo-philes after something a little different to the mainland – more rugged, more fierce – but the White Lotus effect has really ramped up tourism to this little island over the past few years. See what all the fuss is about by planning a trip in October when the oppressive summer heat has finally died down, and the peak-season crowds have melted away. The landscape here is extraordinary; cities plonked at the bottom of smoking volcanoes, glossy islands cast away in the sea, and gently crumbling grandiose architecture that hints at a patchwork of influences from Moorish to Norman. You’ll also find some of Europe’s best food here; fat tubes of cannoli and refreshing granita that you won’t stop talking about even after you leave.

Where to stay: In Palermo, we love Villa Igea (which was featured on our 2023 Gold List ) or stay at Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo , set against the backdrop of Mount Etna.

Best places to travel in October

Valencia, Spain

1.  Valencia, Spain

Valencia might’ve been named World Design Capital back in 2022, but it’s still a darn dazzling place.  The aesthetically brilliant southeastern Spanish port city is home to fantastic art museums, contemporary galleries and dazzling architecture. Explore the stark white buildings at the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, including the uncannily stormtrooper-helmet-esque Palau de les Arts opera house and wander the modernist El Cabanyal barrio, with its tiled facades.

Average temp in October: 18C/64F

Philippines

2.  Philippines

Adventure travel, including diving, has grown in popularity over recent years, and the Philippines’ 7,000 islands get top marks for underwater adventures. Head to Palawan’s Coron Bay for mind-blowing wreck diving, while Anilao is one of the world’s best spots for biodiversity, meaning you might just see something that’s not even been named yet. More experienced divers can also try blackwater diving here, where you’re tethered to a boat line in the pitch-black ocean at night, with a torch, for an altogether more space-like experience. Visit once the rainy season’s out of the way, in the second half of October, to make the most of its beautiful beaches. Food more your jam? As Filipino cuisine takes root in global cities like New York and London, maybe it’s time to go eat the good stuff at the source, from vibrant ube (purple yam) ice cream to Lechon (roast suckling pig).

Average temp in October: 27C/82F

Bhutan

3.  Bhutan

With more than 70 percent of its land covered by forest, this Buddhist kingdom is the world’s only carbon-negative country, absorbing far more of the stuff than it produces. Travel is tightly controlled to make sure tourism remains low-impact, so it isn’t cheap—though the $200-a-day fee to be there includes all your accommodation, food and a guide (which is worth it because there’s a mythical story behind pretty much everything you encounter here). Go to get lost in pristine nature, breathe in lungfuls of clean Himalayan air and feel extra smug knowing you’re eating right too.

Average temp in October: 22C/72F

Bosnia and Herzegovina

4.  Bosnia and Herzegovina

Summers in Bosnia and Herzegovina are mighty hot, and the winters get pretty darn cold. You can do the maths from there, and October might be the best time to visit this remarkable country. The number of tourists drops dramatically, meaning more space to wander the enchanting old towns of Sarajevo, Mostar and the rest. Travnik’s charming collection of mosques sparkles a little brighter, while Banja Luka cements its spot as the country’s best night out. More and more people are waking up to the magic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, so make a point of visiting this October to see for yourself.

Average temp in October: 11C/52F

New Mexico

5.  New Mexico

There is more to New Mexico than desert and a certain Netflix show. Every October,  Albuquerque  hosts its eye-popping International Balloon Fiesta, where you can spot hundreds of technicolour hot air balloons making their spectacular ascent. Maybe it is the seemingly endless skies and epic sunrises that make it a prime location, but it has become the world’s largest balloon festival and the most photographed event on Earth. Make time to visit  Santa Fe , in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, for a mix of Spanish colonial architecture and earth-coloured historic adobe neighbourhoods, plus a comprehensive Georgia O'Keeffe Museum dedicated to her artistic legacy and American modernism.

Timisoara, Romania

6.  Timisoara, Romania

This under-the-radar city, with its large public squares, leafy gardens and restored pastel-painted art nouveau architecture, makes an attractive city break that’s a far cry from the tower blocks other Romanian cities are known for. Timisoara was Romania's ‘first free city’, home of the country’s 1989 revolution to overthrow the communist dictatorship (brush up on the history at the Museum of the 1989 Revolution). Its independent spark lives on in live music venues, from intimate jazz bars to the grand opera house.

Average temp in October: 19C/66F

San Francisco

7.  San Francisco

San Francisco has never been one to conform, even to weather norms: for warm, sunny SF days, you’re better off visiting in spring and fall rather than summer. Time your visit for October, so once you’re done with the classics— Golden Gate Bridge ,  Alcatraz  and the adorably blubbery sea lions at  Pier 39 —you can soak up the vibes at the  Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival . In true independent San Francisco spirit, the festival is entirely non-commercial (no ads or sponsorship banners), free to visit and BYOB. Held in the  Golden Gate Park , it’s become a beloved SF institution since it was first held in 2001 and has attracted acts including Emmylou Harris and Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant.

Namibia

8.  Namibia

Namibia has been growing in popularity as a destination since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent their honeymoon there last year, and the boom in bookings has sparked a flurry of new lodge openings. Some of the best are making the most of the country’s stargazing opportunities in and around Africa’s only International Dark Sky Reserve (such as the sleek & Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, with a resident astronomer, and Kwessi Dunes, with open-roofed stargazing rooms in each of its chalets). It’s possible to camp in the reserve too, but book in advance as the limited spaces tend to fill up fast.

Average temp in October: 21C/71F

Toronto

9.  Toronto

Toronto is one of the most exciting cities on the planet, with thrilling nightlife nestled next to gourmet restaurants and some of the finest live music venues on the continent. What makes October the perfect time to visit? Hockey, that’s what. Sure, Maple Leafs fans have suffered more than enough misery over the last half decade-plus, but the regular season isn’t a problem these days. The 2022 Toronto Maple Leafs season gets underway with an away game against Montreal Canadiens on October 12, with the home opener coming the next night against Washington Capitals. Don’t expect to get tickets, but watching a game in a Toronto bar is a bucket list experience.

NYC

10.  NYC

It’s pretty much always a good time to visit NYC—at  Christmas , you get the snow and ubiquitous festive decorations. In spring, you get the  Central Park  cherry blossom. In summer, you get the long evenings in the feelgood heat, and then fall brings a burnt amber hue to everything. This year, save it for  Halloween  when the annual  Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade  kicks off in Manhattan, shedding NYC’s pooches in a ghoulish new light as pups and their owners come dressed in ever-more outlandish costumes.

The Best Solo Vacations to Take in 2024

By Caitlin Morton

Safest Countries in the World Iceland

There used to be a certain stigma around solo vacations , with cruises charging extra for single occupancy and waiters frowning at the words “table for one.” But we're happy to report that the times are a’changing. The world has never been more accommodating to solo travelers—we’re constantly hearing about new meet-up apps to combat loneliness and safety measures to address discomfort (so long, catcalling ).

If you have the will and the way, you can travel just about anywhere by yourself. In fact, these 18 getaways are even better when you go it alone, whether it's a soul-searching hike through Scotland or a pod hotel where, frankly, two’s a crowd. And if you’re still a little anxious about writing up an itinerary by yourself, we’ve gone ahead and suggested travel specialists who can help you out with the more planning-heavy trips.

Check out some of our favorite solo vacations for 2024, and get ready to start loving your own company.

Ireland

Embark a self-guided tour of Ireland

For U.S.-based travelers, Ireland is kind of a no-brainer when it comes to solo travel, thanks to easy access and friendly locals. Travel to the Emerald Isle becomes even easier with Brendan Vacations, a Dublin-based agency dating back to 1969. While they offer traditional group tours, solo travelers should try one of the “locally hosted rail” options: These excursions—including the editor-approved  Ireland’s Sparkling Gems tour—will set you up with hotels, transports (including train rides and chauffeured drives), and one activity per day, but leave you with enough free time to explore on your own. Even better? You’ll be given a 24/7 emergency number and a local guide who will meet you in each city, ready to provide restaurant recommendations, insider tips, and more.

Price: From $2,403 When to go: Open all year How to book:   brendanvacations.com Tap the experts:   Kathleen Sheridan (McCabe World Travel)

Bali

Take a silent retreat in Bali

The Buddhist practice of quietly meditating dates back millennia, but the need for silent reflection in the face of never-ending online chatter is so needed today. There are many hideaways around the world aimed at helping travelers disconnect, but one of our favorites is Bali Silent Retreat . As the name suggests, the retreat involves no talking, no listening to music, just silence and the noises of nature (so really, there wouldn’t be any point in bringing along a travel companion). Nestled in the foothills of the sacred Mount Batukaru volcano and surrounded by rice fields and jungle, this is an especially great choice if you want to completely get away from it all—no phones or internet allowed. Another perk for solo travelers: Accommodations range from women-only dormitories to single rooms and private bungalows.

Price: Housing from $40 to $90 per night; Day Passes (which cover the cost of meals and programs) are $47 When to go: Open all year How to book: balisilentretreat.com Tap the experts: Diane Embree (Bali Barong Tours)

Japan Nine Hours hotel OtemachiImperial Palace

Sleep in Japan’s pod hotels

When there are two pairs of elbows in a tiny hotel room, someone’s bound to get hurt. But a single traveler has more options, like New York’s two Pod Hotels in Midtown. Single rooms have a twin bed, flat-screen TV, free Wi-fi, and…not much else, ideal for propelling you out on the town. In Japan (including various train stations and Tokyo’s Narita Airport), the experience is more extreme: For a low price, you can get a pod bed at Nine Hours for, yes, nine hours—just long enough to rest and shower.

Price: From $30 per nine hours When to go: Early spring or late fall, when the weather is ideal How to book: ninehours.co.jp Tap the experts: Amy Tadehara (InsideJapan Tours)

baby sea turtle in mexico

Rescue turtles in the Mexican Caribbean

People travel alone for many reasons, but not everyone wants to focus on the self. Do your part as an eco-friendly traveler in Quintana Roo, Mexico, where you can join the many local efforts to rescue sea turtles. Most notable is the Akumal Turtle Camp, a program that’s been hosted by the Akumal Ecological Center (CEA) since 1993. The camp invites volunteers to learn about the species with in-class education, turtle monitoring protocols, and species identification before continuing with fieldwork: tagging and protecting nesting females, marking nests with GPS coordinates, and minimizing predators from the nesting sites. Note that the program requires volunteers to commit at least two weeks of their time, so start stocking up on vacation days now.

Price: $180 for two weeks; $350 for four weeks (does not include accommodations) When to go: May to October How to book: ceakumal.org Tap the experts: Zachary Rabinor (Journey Mexico)

Solo travel company Flash Pack launched a collection of new travel experiences in late 2021. One of the most exciting offerings is the “ Finland’s Secret Island ” tour, a four-day journey through Finnish Lapland complete with husky rides, cold-water plunges, and Northern Lights safaris on the back of snowmobiles. At night, you can cozy up at Hotel Vartiosaari , a boutique property located on its own private island in the Kemijoki River. Only up to 18 travelers are allowed to join the group at one time, so you’re guaranteed to make quick friends as you huddle for warmth above the Arctic Circle.

Switzerland Riviera River Cruises

Set sail on a European river cruise

It’s hard for solo travelers to consider a cruise without first worrying about “single supplements”—the dreaded fees slapped on passengers for booking a room designed to hold two or more people (depending on the trip, those fees can end up tacking on thousands of extra dollars). Luckily, the industry is becoming increasingly accommodating , with cruise lines of all sizes reducing or getting rid of the infamous fees. Riviera River Cruises is one company that specifically caters to solo travelers, with a variety of routes and exclusive departures for solo travelers. Even better? The cruise line has waived the dreaded single supplement on eight of its 2024 itineraries , including routes that visit Burgundy, Paris, and Normandy, as well as Portugal’s Douro Valley.

Price: $2,049 to $4,889 (varies based on trip) When to go: Departure dates available in March, April, July, August, October, and November How to book: rivierarivercruises.com Tap the experts: Angela Turen (Churchill and Turen Ltd.)

Safest Countries in the World Iceland

Drive Iceland’s Golden Circle

Safety is obviously a concern during solo vacations, so you might as well plan a trip to one of the safest countries in the world: Iceland. Fly into Reykjavik , then rent a car and hit the road. Iceland is great for long, soul-seeking drives—and if you go by yourself, you won’t have to annoy fellow passengers when you pull over every five minutes to take photos of waterfalls and glaciers. You can see most of the country along the Ring Road (Route 1), but if you're crunched for time, catch some of southern Iceland’s greatest hits like Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss, along the Golden Circle route .

Price: Gas is currently $8.82 per gallon in Iceland When to go: Early May, before the summer crowds descend Tap the experts: Chris Gordon (Icepedition)

Rwanda Gorillas

Track gorillas in Rwanda

Yes, a solo safari is possible—and extremely rewarding. There are few better places to recharge and recenter than in the middle of Africa, with only the hotel staff and wild animals to keep you company; plus, some travel companies even have discounted single supplements. In 2019, Singita opened two new properties in Rwanda— Singita Kwitonda Lodge and Kataza House —complete with gorilla trekking expeditions ideal for adventurers traveling alone. You don’t have to worry about having enough travel companions in a group, because regardless of whether you’re alone or traveling with friends, “guests are divided into groups of eight (dependent on their fitness level) where guides take them into the Volcanoes National Park to track gorillas,” Traveler contributor Mary Holland discovered during her solo trip to Rwanda.

Price: Trekking permits are $1,500 per person, per trek; suites start at $2,470 per night When to go: June to September or December 2024, to avoid the rainy seasons How to book: singita.com Tap the experts: Linda Friedman (Custom Safaris)

Getaway cabin

Get away with Getaway

While cabins in the woods tend to conjure up horror-movie memories, Getaway’s cabins are nothing but charming and idyllic—and perfect for solo travelers. The company specializes in boutique rentals in rural areas outside of major hubs like New York, Austin, and Los Angeles, the idea being that people can escape the stress of the city for a long weekend. Expect all the normal creature comforts (a full bathroom, kitchenette, comfortable bed, etc.) as well as cute touches like vintage radios and s’mores kits. The star of every cabin, however, is the giant floor-to-ceiling window adjacent to the bed—perfect for an unplugged vacation that trades Netflix binges for birdwatching and leaf peeping.

Price: From $99 per night When to go: All year How to book: getaway.house

Italian Dolomites

Cycle through the Italian Dolomites

Cycling trips are perfect for lone travelers, giving you plenty of time with your thoughts while still being part of a small group. There are tons of tour operators specializing in bike trips, but try to book with a group that specializes in solo travel—like Trek Travel , a company with experienced guides, plus options to room either by yourself or with an arranged roommate. One of their newest adventures is a five-day ride through the Italian Dolomites, with 220 miles of challenging trails offset by the beauty of the surrounding mountains and glistening lakes. The price of the trip includes hotel accommodations, meals, equipment (including Domane SL 7 bikes), and daily snacks and drinks.

Hurtigruten Antarctica

Escape the noise in Antarctica

Ever since we saw Cate Blanchett sneak off to Antarctica in Where'd You Go, Bernadette? , we've been wondering how possible a solo trip to the frozen continent really is. Turns out, a solo trip is very possible. Contributor Judy Koutsky wrote about her Antarctic cruise , which she claims was best experienced by herself. Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten ensures travelers have enough space without getting lonely, with group excursions and restaurants that allow you to join others' tables. And then there are the quiet moments. Koutsky writes: “Walking among the chinstrap penguins, or taking a scenic zodiac ride where the Gentoo penguins were diving in the water, cruising around massive icebergs, snowshoeing up a hill to get amazing views of humpback whales—it felt so peaceful, so fitting that I was alone.”

Price: From $10,576 When to go: January, March, October How to book: hurtigruten.com Tap the experts: Tim Soper (EYOS Expeditions)

Highlights include hiking up the Sierra Negra Volcano, snorkeling with sea turtles and manta rays, boating past sea lion colonies, and touring the city of Quito on the mainland. Travel company Contiki offers a 14-day “ Total Thailand ” trip, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai . (Accommodations range from twin-share hotel rooms to jungle cottages.) The Chiang Mai leg includes a visit to the Elephant Nature Park, a rescue and rehabilitation center that allows visitors to feed the animals without exploiting (or riding) them.

Since you aren’t going to be chitchatting with a friend or challenging each other to a game of cards, now’s the opportunity to finally read that book everybody’s been talking about. (Need some recommendations? Check out this list .) And while you can accomplish that on any given Amtrak ride, we suggest taking the ultra-luxurious route—Belmond’s Eastern & Oriental Express throughout Malaysia, to be exact. The brand’s “Wild Malaysia” trip includes guided tours of Penang and Taman Negara National Park, and the iconic train comes with private suites, multi-course meals, and 24-hour concierge service.

Scotland

Backpack through the Scottish Highlands

In the crowded Old World, the idea of backpacking is less wild and more cultural. Trek through Scotland on a multi-day trip, and you’ll hardly be alone—you’ll meet farmers as you cross their fields and sleep in small-town inns every night. The 96-mile West Highland Way is probably the most famous hike in the country, taking travelers past the moors and mountains of the Scottish Highlands. You can certainly plan the trek yourself, or let a travel company do it for you— Macs Travels has an 8-day tour that includes daily breakfasts, door-to-door baggage transfers, and accommodation in select B&Bs and guest houses.

Highlights of the eight-day tour include riding camels through the Wadi Rum Desert, floating in the Dead Sea, and hiking to the ancient city of Petra.

By: Author Girl with the Passport

Posted on Last updated: May 2, 2024

Categories North America , Solo Female Travel

Are you a diehard solo traveler who is desperately searching for some of the best places to travel alone in the US? If you are then you’ve come to the right place because trust me, there really ain’t no party like a USA solo travel party (YEE-HAW)!

Besides solo travel is just, in general, the total shiz! Esepcially since, well, who really has time to sit around, waiting for other prople, just to book an epic USA vacay?

I know I don’t! I mean, if I sat around, waiting for other people to travel, then I think THE most exicitng place that I’d ever go would be the grocery store. WOMP, WOMP, WOMP.

Which is why I created this SUPER handy list of all the best places to travel alone in the US, this way you can quickly and easily get your solo travel swerve on, and while waiting for…exactly NO ONE. Wait! Time out! Scratch that! Because in all honesty,  I actually wrote a WHOLE LOT of NOTHING.

Yeah. See, instead of writing this post myself, I actually found some of the raddest and baddest solo travelers out there to help me create this list of awesome American cities for solo travelers.

So take a gander, get MAD innspired, and see if you favorite metropolis made the cut, or is just another, anonymous addition to the chorus of the song, “another one bites the dust.”. Either way stick around and find out exactly where your solo travels should take you next, as you explore the grand old, U S of A!

1. San Diego, California

Beautiful Torrey Pines Beach, at sunset, in San Diego, California.

By: Sane of Spend Life Traveling

One of the many things I love about San Diego is the intense devotion of locals to this city and the level of pride that they have in calling this place home.

And for good reason! Because between its perfect, year-round climate, the beautiful beaches, the gorgeous Balboa Park, and the many independent shops, restaurants, and cafés, San Diego really is a fabulous city!

I mean I myself have taken many solo trips to San Diego and cannot recommend it enough as one of the best places to travel alone in the US.

And added bonus? Many tourists seem to skip over this city when visiting California, making this place a whole lot less touristy than many other nearby, urban centers.

But If you’re unsure of what to do during your solo trip here, then why not start with one of the best  things to do in San Diego  and explore some of the city’s many amazing beaches? Two of my personal favorites are Ocean Beach and the Mission Beach boardwalk.

However La Jolla is great too. And if you do end up here, be sure to visit the seals at La Jolla Cove (if you’re feeling extra brave, you can even swim with them too!)

Now, if you have time you cannot leave San Diego without visiting Coronado Island for the day. You’ll also want to explore the enchanting Balboa Park (take your time since this greenspace is massive!) and spend at least one evening in Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter.

But if all this solo travel leaves you feeling a bit lonely, then you can always check out Meetup.com  and meet like-minded, solo travelers while at a rejuvenating yoga sesh by the beach or while enjoying a fun, craft beer tasting. Because the array of different activities that this website offers really are endless.

2. Honolulu, Hawaii

While in Honolulu, Hawaii, take some time to hike up Diamond Head and experience the stunning, panoramic views of Waikiki and the surrounding area.

By: Noel of Travel Photo Discovery

Of all the fun places that solo female travelers can visit in the US, Honolulu, in Oahu, is definitely one of the best.

Just a short, five-hour flight from the west coast of the USA, Honolulu is a vivacious hub of international travel and is a fantastic home base from which you can explore Hawaii’s many neighboring islands.

However the city is itself is also a fun and easy place for solo travelers to explore since it is home to iconic, tourist attractions like Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head State Park.

But if you’re looking to do something a bit more cultural, then you can always visit one of the area’s many historical attractions like Iolani Palace (the only royal palace in the United States), city hall, Chinatown, Aloha Tower, Pearl Harbor, and Ala Moana (the largest outdoor shopping mall in the Pacific).

Additionally, Honolulu is a paradise for adventure lovers and has many different activities that solo travelers can enjoy, like water sports, hiking, biking, sailing, and climbing; all of which can be done as part of a group tour group or on your very own, DIY excursion.

However if food is more your thing, then you’ll love Honolulu’s food scene, which is a beautiful mixture of traditional, Hawaiian dishes with other, distinct, Asian cuisines, creating a cross-cultural feast of flavors that can be found throughout the city’s many different street food vendors, food courts, and fine dining venues.

So if you’re ready to visit Honolulu for yourself, then check out this post about some of the  top things you can do in Honolulu , and get some additional inspiration about what to see and do while on the island of Oahu.

3. New York City, New York

A beautiful view of NYC's iconic skyline.

By: Claudia of My Adventures Across The World

New York is hands down, one of the best cities to travel alone in the US! I mean, after all, it was the immortal backdrop for the iconic show, Sex and the City! Which makes sense since this is the kind of place where a solo traveler never really feels alone.

No, really! There are just so many things to do, places to visit, shows to see, and events to attend that you never really have time to feel lonely.

Plus there are tons of classic things to do in New York , like see the Statue of Liberty, go on the Staten Island ferry, visit the Empire State Building (from where you can get breathtaking views of Manhattan), explore Central Park, stop by the MET (the Metropolitan Museum of Art), check out the Guggenheim, visit MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), and pay your respect at the National 9/11 Memorial and World Trade Center.

While you’re here I also recommend walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and exploring Brooklyn Heights, one of the nicest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Once here you’ll enjoy stunning, panoramic views of both Manhattan and the Williamsburg Bridge, another iconic bridge that connects downtown Manhattan with Brooklyn.

However if you’re looking for an excellent place to eat, then you can’t beat Olio e Piu, which is a nice Italian eatery in The Village. Zibetto Espresso Bar is also a fantastic place for an awesome cup of coffee in Midtown Manhattan.

And while New York does have some excellent accommodations, they can be quite costly. Therefore you may want to opt for an Airbnb instead of a regular hotel, especially since the experience will feel a bit more personable.

Plus if you can find a centrally located Airbnb in the East Village, then you’ll still have easy access to some of the best attractions, restaurants, and nightlife spots in the entire city.

4. Asheville, North Carolina

Some of the stunning views that you'll enjoy while hiking around Asheville, North Caroline

By: Meghan of Meghan the Traveling Teacher

Asheville is such a fun city to visit alone! Not only will you find plenty of likeminded people here, but you’ll also discover that a visit to this charming little mountain town can be super affordable too!

Additionally Asheville is located less than an hour from the Smoky Mountains, making it easy for visitors to go on incredible hikes and explore some of the region’s most spectacular waterfalls.

Personally though my favorite area is the Pisgah National Forest since you can go down a natural rock slide waterfall in the summer and marvel at the beautiful fall foliage here in the Autumn.

Because while you’re in Asheville, the mountains really are all around you in, which is why many locals, and travelers alike, will join hiking groups (you can find them on Facebook or MeetUp) and explore the plethora of different hiking trails around the city.

But, after all that hiking, you’ll probably be a little hungry! Which is perfect since Asheville has an amazing food and drink scene, with local favorites including restaurants like Tupelo Honey (Southern food), Corner Kitchen (American cuisine), and Curate (Spanish food).

So feel free to relax and go on an awesome brewery tour. Or, learn more about the city’s fascinating history at places like the Biltmore Estate and Omni Grove Park Hotel.  Because trust me! There really are a ton of fun and cheap things to do around Asheville, North Carolina.

5. Memphis, Tennessee

Beale Street in Memphis Tennessee, one of the best places to travel alone in the US.

By: Clare of I live 4 Travel

Memphis is a city that is known for its music, making it the perfect place to experience some authentic Blue’s and Rock-n-Roll.

Which is why the one thing that you absolutely HAVE to do while in Memphis is visit Graceland , the former home of Elvis Presley.

During your visit not only will you get to see exactly what the mansion looked like on the day of Elvis’ death, but you’ll also get to view some of his lavish outfits and pay your respects at his gravesite.

While in the city you can also stop by the legendary Sun Studio , the birthplace of Rock-n-Roll, and hear the unique stories behind rock-n-roll legends like Turner, Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison, all of whom recorded albums here.

However if history and museums are more your thing, then you cannot leave Memphis without an eye-opening visit to the National Civil Rights Museum , a unique attraction that was built around the Lorraine Motel, the exact place where Martin Luther King was assassinated.

But Memphis is not just famous for its music. It’s also known for its unique style of barbecue, which can be enjoyed at Central BBQ , in downtown Memphis. And once you’ve had your fill of amazing BBQ take a nice, leisurely stroll down Beale Street and listen to some live music at one of the area’s many fantastic bars.

Yes Memphis really is the perfect city for solo female travelers since it’s safe, easy to get around, and home to a ton of different attractions that every type of solo traveler will love.

6. Madison, Wisconsin

By: Paulina of Paulina on the Road

Madison,  Wisconsin  is often overlooked by travelers who are searching for some of the top destinations in the United States. However the capital of Wisconsin is a great place to visit, especially if you’re traveling solo!

“Why?” you may rightly wonder. Well, this city has so many amazing activities for you to enjoy alone, like visiting the  Madison Historical Society , exploring the  Wisconsin State Capitol , or enjoying a scenic walk along Lake Mendota.

But if you don’t want to spend your entire time in Madison alone, then you can always visit one of the city’s many bars and restaurants, like  Madison Eleven Park , since this is an easy place to meet people, thanks in large part to nearby, Madison University.

And if you’re not sure where to stay while in Madison then you’ll be delighted to know that this amazing city has several different hostels, like the  HI Madison Hostel , that offer a wide array of activities for solo travelers to enjoy.

7. San Francisco, California

Marina enjoying the marvelous Painted Ladies of San Francisco, California.

By: Marina of Travel Eat Blog

San Francisco is one of my favorite places to travel solo since it’s a safe, vibrant city, that is also home to an amazing public transportation system.

I also love how unique every neighborhood in San Francisco is.

I mean it’s like each neighborhood has it’s very own, unique history; a history that you can personally experience while you’re there. That’s why, I would definitely recommend visiting one of the  most beautiful districts in San Francisco , the Marina/ Cow Hollow District.

While you’re here you’ll find a ton of different local shops, street bars, restaurants, and beaches, as well as some beyond exquisite views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Palace of Fine Arts  is also in this area and a total must since you can pack yourself a little picnic lunch and enjoy it out in front of the pond here. You can also stroll through the park and enjoy mesmerizing views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Similarly Chinatown is another must-see neighborhood, in downtown, San Francisco, that is filled with unique decorations,  colorful shops, historic street lights, vibrant hanging lanterns, and charming pagodas.

This area is also home to Chong Qing Xiao Mian, an amazing little Chinese restaurant that serves some of the best Sichuan noodles (beef noodles with pickled mustard) in the entire city. And for a fantastic, reasonably priced place to stay try some of the hotels near Union Square since they are centrally located and within close proximity of some fantastic entertainment, food, and shopping options.

8. Phoenix, Arizona

The amazing, natural landscape that you'll discover while hiking along the Treasure Loop Trail through the Superstition Mountains near Pheonix, Arizona.

By: Nicole of American SW Obsessed

Best visited between October and March when the weather isn’t too hot, Phoenix is without a doubt one of the most underrated cities in the USA.

I mean not only is there a lot to do there, but it also makes a great home base from which you can explore the area’s many National Parks and Monuments.

Personally though my favorite part of Phoenix is Scottsdale since it is a real foodie’s paradise that has over 800 restaurants and cafes to choose from. And while a variety of different cuisines are represented here, I recommend sampling Scottsdale’s authentic Southwestern cuisine since it is a beautiful cross between Spanish, Mexican and Tex-Mex flavors.

However to really enjoy dishes from as many restaurants as possible, I recommend joining one of the many amazing food tours that are offered by Arizona Food Tours .

While you’re here I would also recommend going on a hike along the Treasure Loop Trail since it a beginner’s trail that will take you through the Superstition Mountains (to the east of Phoenix) and provide you with breath-taking views of the surrounding area (When hiking in Phoenix, always start early in the morning and carry plenty of water).

9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The historic beauty of Center City in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

By: Derek and Mike of Robe Trotting

Philadelphia is a fantastic city for any type of traveler, but especially for solo female travelers since it is well-lit, safe, easy to get around, and has a ton of fun things to do , many of which are best enjoyed alone.

Philly is also known for its wealth of world-renowned art museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art , The Barnes Foundation , and The Rodin Museum .

However if science is more your thing, then you’ll love Philly’s Franklin Institute , as well as The Mutter Museum of Medical Oddities. Additionally, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens are another hidden gem that is well worth visiting since this fantastical place includes an exhibition of tile-mosaics that are spread throughout multiple city lots.

Now because Philadelphia is home to more street art murals than almost any other city in the United States, it is also a fantastic city to explore on foot.

And along the way you can also discover Philly’s Old City, and learn more about this city’s prominent. place in American history, with a visit to Independence Hall , The Liberty Bell , and The Constitution Center.

And for all the food lovers out there, no trip to Philly would be complete without sampling local favorites like a cheesesteak and a Philly soft pretzel. Plus most Philadelphia restaurants actually offer food service at the bar, which is the perfect place to dine when eating alone.

10. Disney World, Florida

Disney World (in Florida) really is one of the best places to travel alone in the US.

By: Kris of Nomad By Trade

My first ever solo trip was to Disney World and I truly believe that it is the perfect place to start your very own, solo travel adventure.

I mean if you’re staying in Disney itself then all of your transportation (including from the airport to your hotel and from your hotel to the parks) is included with the cost of your stay.

Therefore you really don’t have to worry about the logistics of getting around by yourself or being alone at night. And with four theme parks, two water parks, and a shopping/dining district to enjoy, there’s plenty to keep you busy during your stay.

Plus not only do you get to plan your days exactly as you want them, visiting all of the top attractions that matter to you the most, but dining reservations and FastPasses are also much easier to come by when you’re traveling alone.

There are also official, Photopass photographers, stationed at all of the best Disney photo spots, who will help you take pictures, even if you don’t purchase photos directly from Disney so that you can come home with something other than a selfie.

Additionally several popular attractions now have designated, single rider lines that you can use to help reduce wait times, which is just one of the many reasons why I love visiting Disney World solo .

11. Santa Fe, New Mexico

The beautiful, natural landscape of Santa Fe, New Mexico, one of the best places to travel alone in the US.

By: Stella of Around the World in 24 Hours

Santa Fe, New Mexico is one of the most pleasant and charming cities for a solo female traveler in the United States. First of all, it’s not a huge city. In fact, it’s not even the largest city in New Mexico, making it a relatively easy place for solo travelers to navigate.

Now because Santa Fe is the state capital, and one of the most historic cities in New Mexico, it has a wealth of cultural attractions and delicious restaurants that guests can enjoy.

That’s why the first stop for any solo female traveler in Santa Fe should be the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum , an institution that is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the most famous American, female artist of all time.

However if you’re more interested in history, then you can always visit the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian , to learn more about New Mexico’s very first settlers, and the Palace of the Governors, to better understand the men and women who helped shape New Mexico’s past.

But, if you’re looking for a bit of relaxation then be sure to make an appointment at Santa Fe’s legendary Ten Thousand Waves Spa, where you can splurge on an all-day package, or save some money on one of their more affordable, female-only baths.

Also don’t miss the out on Santa Fe’s extraordinary restaurant scene, where you can go casual at Cafe Pasqual’s or enjoy something a bit more upscale at Restaurant Martin .

Either way Do NOT leave without trying the area’s famous, New Mexican green chiles! Because yes, they really are THAT GOOD!

12. Boise, Idaho

Beautiful Boise, the unassuming capital of Idaho.

By: Kay of The Awkward Traveller

Like most of Idaho, Boise is a criminally underrated hidden gem in the United States. However that’s also part of the reason why this city is such a fantastic destination for solo female travelers.

I mean… Pull up those Tinder profiles ladies! HEYYYOOO.

But, aside from the top tier dating potential, this vibrant, college town hosts an array of fun pop up events that solo travelers will LOVE, like indie film showings, poetry slams, and trivia nights every day of the week.

Boise is also a microbrewery mecca of sorts, with some of my personal favorites including Sockeye Brewing and Boise Brewing.

Speaking of booze and food, Boise does a magnificent job of bringing the earthy goodness of Idaho’s treasure – the potato – to life in new and exciting ways.

So be sure to stop by Boise Fry Co, and sample some of the more than 20 sauces that accompany their endless array of potato types and fry cuts. Also and I hate to say it, but you really haven’t lived until you’ve eaten Idaho’s famous Butter Cake. So, definitely pick up a slice after a fantastic lunch (or dinner) at Fork !

And while Idaho has no National Parks to speak of, the natural areas that surround Boise are truly exquisite and full of enchanting waterfalls that are waiting to be discovered in places like Shoshone Falls and Craters of the Moon National Monument .

But if culture and learning is more your jam, then definitely check out one of the nation’s top nuclear labs at Atomic City. Or you could always decolonize your understanding of American history and take a trip to the Sacagawea Cultural Center, where you can learn all about the TRUE story behind the Lewis & Clark expedition.

13. Denver, Colorado

The incredible natural beauty of Denver, Colorado.

By: Meg of Fox in the Forest

When choosing some of the best places to travel alone in the US, Denver just HAS to be on your list!

I mean one of the BEST things about Denver, Colorado, is the fact that most of the residents here are actually from somewhere else. Yup! It’s an incredibly dynamic city full of transplants, that is home to a variety of different people from all across the USA.

And while the people of Denver are amazing, there are also a ton of fun things to do in Denver, like visit a top-notch brewery, catch a concert at the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater, head to a museum, enjoy a picnic lunch at one of Denver’s many parks, or go on one of the many amazing  hikes near Denver.

If you can though be sure to rent a car (at least for a day) so that you can enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery or  Rocky Mountain National Park  or visit one of the many relaxing hot springs just outside of Denver.

Now although there a ton of different boutique hotels in Denver, one of the best places to stay for any solo female traveler is going to be an Airbnb.

And the Highlands, RiNo, and Capitol Hill are all perfect neighborhoods to stay in since there are plenty of small businesses, boutique shops, and restaurants here for visitors to explore.

14. Atlanta, Georgia

The beauty of downtown Atlanta, Georgia during sunset.

By: Allie of WOC Travel

Atlanta is a great destination for solo female travelers since there are a multitude of things to do here, that will satisfy people with a variety of different interests.

I mean from history to art to cultural activities to food, you will not run out of things to do here. And one of your very first stops here should be the Atlanta Botanical Gardens .

Because one of the park’s most awe-inspiring, feature displays is that of the Earth Goddess, a 25-foot tall, living sculpture that consists of more than 18,000 annual plants that are used to create the structure’s beautiful face and hair.

Now, in addition to the botanical gardens, intrepid solo travelers can also enjoy the city’s famed World of Coke, Zoo Atlanta, Centennial Park, and the Aquarium, as well as a ton of different festivals that occur each weekend.

And if you’re trying to decide where to stay in Atlanta then I would definitely recommend the Midtown area since it’s in close proximity to multiple forms of public transportation.

There are also many fantastic restaurants, like South City Kitchen for brunch and Surin of Thailand for late-night dinner,  in this amazing neighborhood, as well as top attractions, like Piedmont Park (AKA the City of Atlanta’s premier green space).

15. Boston, Massachusetts

Sunset near Boston's beautiful harborfront.

By: Retha of The Roaming Nanny

Boston is a great city for solo female travelers. Not only are there plenty of things to do here, year-round, but this city is also home to a fantastic, easy-to-use, network of public transportation.

That’s why I highly recommend a Boston itinerary of at least 3 days, if not more, since this will give you plenty of time to visit many of the city’s top attractions.

Because as someone who grew up nearby, I always tell visitors that they NEED to do two things while in Boston: Explore Boston Common and Public Gardens and Watch a baseball game at Fenway Park (or at least take a tour).

Trust me on this, the Common always has something going on, especially when the weather is nice and the flowers in the Public Gardens are in full bloom, There are also plenty of fun statues to discover, as well as a slew of Swan Boats that you MUST take a spin on.

And while I’m a HUGE baseball fan myself even if you’re not into the sport, you should still definitely watch the Red Sox play at Fenway Park (one of the oldest ballparks in the country) since it is always one hell of an experience.

So yeah just grab a hotdog, a beer, and some cheap tickets (they usually start at around $25-$35 apiece), so that you too can enjoy Boston’s immortal, boys of summer.

Now when searching for a place to stay in Boston, look no further than  HI Boston , which sits right near Boston Common, I promise this is an absolutely ideal location to stay in as it’s right near the Redline (which can get you anywhere in the city that you need to go) and is within walking distance of both Chinatown and the Theatre District.

This fantastic hostel also offers guests both private and shared rooms, as well as a complimentary breakfast every morning.

16. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

The vibrant beauty of Myrtle Beach's famed boardwalk in the evening.

By: Heather of RaulersonGirlsTravel

You wouldn’t immediately think of Myrtle Beach as a fantastic, solo female travel destination, but you should! Because not only is Myrtle Beach small enough for you to explore comfortably on your own, but there are also a ton of different things do there; so much so that you won’t have any idea what to do first.

So, to start, you can always do the obvious, and rent a lounge chair on the beach, while periodically dipping your toes in the water.

However, if all that relaxation gets a bit dull, you can always take a nice stroll along the beach, enjoy the 1.2-mile-long boardwalk here (with several piers that extend out into the ocean), and even stop at the legendary Bowery for some live music.

Plus, if you get hungry along the way you can always enjoy one of the numerous, beachside eateries here, which include Rip Tydz (known for their seafood) and Duffy’s (known for their incredibly sassy waitstaff).

But if you want an even bigger selection of restaurants to choose from, then just stop by Broadway at the Beach, which is also home to a local movie theater, an aquarium, speed boat rides, and various forms of nightlife.

And if you’re feeling REALLY adventurous, you could always rent a car and take a short drive to Brookgreen Gardens or go a bit further afield and explore the beautiful city of Charleston (If you don’t want to drive, you could always take an UBER too).

Now during my trip to Myrtle Beach, I enjoyed a lovely stay at the Anderson Ocean Club and Spa , which sits right on the water. However there are plenty of hotels available here, with a variety of different price ranges, that are all within easy walking distance of the beach.

Which is just one of the many reasons why Myrtle Beach really does have everything you need for the perfect, weekend getaway as a solo female traveler.

17. Portland, Maine

The quaint, New England charm of the Portland Head Lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

By; Olivia of My Wandering Voyage

Portland, Maine, is an enchanting, east coast town that is filled with historic, red brick buildings and seafood restaurants as far as the eye can see.

Add in a BEYOND friendly atmosphere and you have the perfect destination for solo travelers. But what really makes Portland, Maine special is the fact that it has been named both the craft brew capital of the United States and the restaurant city of the year in 2018.

Therefore expect more eateries here, per capita, than in any other city in the US, except for San Francisco of course! And some of the most amazing, foodie hot spots that you’ll just HAVE  to try while you’re in town include  Bite into Maine ,  The Highroller Lobster Co ., Portland Lobster Co.,  J’s Oysters , and Eventide Oyster Co. for delicious seafood and incredible fresh lobster.

Next wash all that delicious food down with some great cocktails at  Vena’s Fizz House , mead from Maine Mead Works, delicious gin from  Hardshore Distilling Company , or a pint from one of the town’s many craft breweries.

While in Portland you’ll also want to explore the cobblestone streets of the Old Port, do a bit of shopping on Exchange Street, enjoy the views from Munjoy Hill, or watch the boats go by at the Historic Waterfront.

However the real highlight of any trip to Portland, Maine are the series of quaint lighthouses that surround the city, the most famous of which is the  Portland Head Lighthouse . See there really is so much to see and do, that you’ll definitely want to plan a fun  weekend in Portland !

18. Salt Lake City, Utah

The natural beauty fo Salt Lake City, Utah, one of the best places to travel alone in the US.

By: Rachelle of Adventure is Never Far Away

Salt Lake City, Utah, is the PERFECT destination for solo female travelers in the USA!   Known as the biggest little town in the west, Salt Lake City has something to satisfy the wanderlust in every type of traveler.

So If you’re an adrenaline junkie, why not take to the sky and go skydiving or paragliding? Or If you’re a rock climber, why not explore one of the numerous slot canyons and sheer faces that surround the city?

And if you visit during winter, well, then be sure to take advantage of the best snow on earth and test your skills at one of Salt Lake City’s world-class ski resorts.

Because with a wealth of restaurants, interactive museums, sporting events, and festivals for solo travelers to experience, the variety of different activities here will always keep you coming back for more.

Plus not only is Salt Lake City easy to navigate, but it’s also one of the safest capital cities in the entire United States.

So much so that residents always welcome visitors and even look out for solo travelers, guaranteeing that anyone who visits will have an amazing time. Salt Lake City also has the added benefit of having hotels outposts for most major chains and being home to a diverse array of AirBnB options.

That’s why for a more socially engaging travel experience, be sure to stay at the new SLC Hostel, which is located just a mile from downtown, right across the street from the city’s light rail system; making this hostel the perfect jumping-off location for exploration further afield.

19. Las Vegas, Nevada

The world's one and only, Las Vegas, Nevada.

By: Jordan of The Solo Life

A surprisingly fun city to visit as a solo traveler is Las Vegas, Nevada. And although unexpected there are a number of exciting things to do for anyone who wants to solo travel Las Vegas.

Now of course there’s gambling in Vegas, as well as shopping, seeing a show, or simply people-watching along The Strip; all of which can be enjoyed as a solo traveler.   And because there are so many people around, and so much security at all of the city’s major hotels and casinos, Las Vegas never really feels unsafe, which is something that is important to any solo traveler.

Another great thing about Las Vegas is that it’s pretty reasonably priced, at least if you’re not a gambler.

Additionally there are a ton of different day trips that you can take from the city, to places like the Hoover Dam and even the Grand Canyon .

However for a fun and totally unique solo activity, try booking a tour at the  Neon Museum , a place that collects and restores neon signs, in order to tell the story of Las Vegas’ dynamic past.

Once inside visitors can see a multitude of historic signs, and all while learning more about them from a dedicated guide.   So whether you’re a gambler, a fan of live shows, or an avid, outdoor enthusiast, Las Vegas really does have something to offer every type of solo traveler.

20. Cincinnati, Ohio

The exquisite, Cincinnati skyline.

By: Sage of Everyday Wanderer

Easy to navigate and with plenty to see and do, Cincinnati is an amazing Midwest destination for solo travelers.

I mean, I explored the city solo from before dawn until well after dusk and always felt safe, which is why I think that Queen City is one of the best places to travel alone in the US.

Founded in the mid-1800s by immigrants from Prussia, Bavaria, and Saxony, Cincinnati’s so-called, “Over the Rhine” neighborhood has a great, central location and is full of one-of-a-kind boutiques, delicious restaurants, and local breweries that are al just waiting to be explored.

And if you enjoy learning about the past then discover the dark and sobering history of slavery in America at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Cente r.

Next lighten things up a bit at the American Sign Museum , which is home to the largest collection of vintage, 1900s era signs in the United States, including a two-ton McDonald’s sign and a fiberglass Big Boy.

From here take a stroll along the Ohio River, at Smale Riverfront Park, admire some the city’s 140 street art murals, and walk across the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, a structure that connects Ohio with Kentucky and that offers visitors unparalleled views of the entire city.

But no trip to Cincinnati would be complete without enjoying a nice, big, bowl of Skyline Chili , nestled atop a bed of spaghetti, and a scoop of black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream from Graeter’s . Conversely, you could also kick start your day with breakfast at Maplewood Kitchen and Bar , where the menu highlights locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients.

Afterwards check out the gourmet hot dogs at The Senate, which should be closely followed by a visit to Bakersfield , where you can enjoy some of the city’s best street tacos and drinks (preferably ones with tequila or whiskey).

21. Charleston, South Carolina

The iconic, Pineapple Fountain in historic, Charleston, South Carolina.

By: Michelle of The Wandering Queen

Charleston, South Carolina is without a doubt, one of the best cities in the USA for solo travelers.   Not only is this town an incredibly, Instagrammable place, filled with historic, pastel-colored homes, but it’s also known for its wealth of delicious seafood and is famed for its one of a kind, southern hospitality.

However Charleston is also home to some wonderfully, delectable cuisine that anyone traveling alone in Charleston will love.

So much so that it can be extremely difficult to get reservations at some of the city’s top eateries, like Edmunds, Oast,  Prohibition, Magnolias, and Husk.

And when it comes to deciding where to stay in Charleston, I highly recommend the downtown area since it is a pedestrian-friendly, centrally located neighborhood, that is within easy walking distance of iconic places like Waterfront Park, Marion Square Farmers Market, King Street shopping center, Historic Charleston City Market, Battery Park, Rainbow Row, and White Point Gardens.

Before you leave though Do NOT forget to take some Instagram shots at Rainbow Row and the Pineapple fountain since both places are incredibly photogenic. But regardless of what fun things you do in Charleston , you’ll definitely fall heard over heels in love with this charming, pastel-hued city.

22. Miami, Florida

Some of the amazing beaches that you'll find in and around Miami, Florida

By: Inna of Executive Thrillseekers

As a solo traveler you’ll first need to decide what part of Miami you’d like to stay in, either Miami or Miami Beach, since these are two completely different areas.

See Miami is a fairly typical city, filled with residential buildings, business centers, skyscrapers, hubs of public transportation, two airports (Miami International & Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport), restaurants, clothing stores, parks and basically anything else you can think of.

In contrast Miami Beach is located on an island and feels like an entirely different city with its own, unique vibe. So, you may want to visit as part of your New York to Miami road trip .

That’s why this place feels more like a cozy little resort town, with a variety of different low-rise buildings, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs for you to check out. There are also groves of beautiful palm trees here that sit nestled along the magnificent, 10-Mile beach.

Therefore if you can, do try and make the most of your time here by staying at a hotel right on Miami Beach, with 24-hour concierge service, just so that you can feel a little safer. Now there are are also plenty of amazing places to visit in Miami , like:

  • Bayside Mall – A beautiful, cozy street along the bay that is home to a ton of different shops and restaurants.
  • Bayfront Park – A stunning park on Biscayne Bay that hosts a variety of different local events and shows.
  • Miami Zoo – Occupying more than 750 acres, this is considered one of the best zoos in the country and is home to more than 500 different species of animals.
  • Wynwood – An artsy neighborhood filled with street art murals, theaters, art studios, museums, and designer clothing stores.

And while 90% of travelers visit Miami to relax on the beach, and enjoy some of the island’s many famed nightclubs, as a solo traveler,   do be careful and take the same precautions that you would in any major city.

23. New Orleans, Louisiana

Some of the beautiful architecture that you'll find throughout New Orleans iconic, French Quarter.

By: Wendy of The Nomadic Vegan

New Orleans is typically viewed as a party town, a place where you can go with a group of friends and have a wild time.

But can you actually enjoy the Big Easy as a solo traveler?   Yes, absolutely!   Because honestly, one of the most amazing things about New Orleans is the iconic, Southern hospitality that you’ll experience from locals.

I mean it’s totally normal for random strangers to strike up a conversation with you. That’s why it’s incredibly easy for solo travelers to make new friends here.   Plus New Orleans locals will be quick to lend a hand if you look like you’re lost or are in need of some help.

Another great way for you to meet people is through a walking tour, during which you can admire the beautiful architecture of exquisite neighborhoods like the French Quarter, the Garden District, and Faubourg Marigny.

Other interesting tour options through the city include cemetery tours and plantation tours.   But if you opt for the latter, be sure to choose one that goes to Whitney Plantation, which has been converted into a very insightful museum about slavery.

And if official tours aren’t really your thing then you can always just wander around the city and enjoy the live music scene here, since you’ll find lots of musicians performing along the streets of the French Quarter.

That being said Frenchmen Street is typically where most locals go to enjoy some live music, and you might want to do the same.

Additionally there are also some amazing restaurants in New Orleans  that serve up traditional, Cajun-style dishes, some of which are available in gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan variations.

And if you’re going to drink while in New Orleans, please do so responsibly and limit yourself to a couple of cocktails.  But if you’re not comfortable drinking alone, then you can always join one of the many pub crawls or cocktails tours through the city .

24. Washington D.C.

The Cherry Blossoms in full bloom along the National Mall of Washington D.C.

By: Richa of My Ticklefeet

The capital city of the US will take you beyond politics and into a world full of history, fun, and adventure.

Now, in my opinion, the best time to visit is during the Spring, when you can see all of the beautiful Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC .

Washington D.C. really is amazing at any time of the year since there are a ton of different attractions here that you can happily enjoy alone. From dozens of free Smithsonian museums to National monuments to tours of government buildings, like Capitol Hill, the White House, the Library of Congress, etc., this magical city really does have it all.

And If you’re visiting during the Spring or Summer seasons, then don’t forget to check out some of the free summer festivals that take place, almost every weekend, throughout the city.   Plus many of the embassies in the city will actually open their doors to the public and host various, cultural events during the month of May.

But given the number of tourists and amount of traffic in the city, I’d recommend using either public transport or shared car services to navigate the city (Also, don’t forget to pack a pair of extra comfortable sneakers since you’ll be doing a lot of walking).

I’d also recommend staying in either the downtown area near China town or near the National Mall since both of these areas are extremely close to many of D.C.’s top attractions.

25. Savannah, Georgia

The old-world beauty of Savannah, Georgia.

By: Marta and Milosz of Backpackers.WRO

Located in the Southeastern part of the United States, Savannah is the oldest city in the state of Georgia and is a perfect destination for anyone who loves history or who wants to explore famous locations from their favorite books and movies.

However no trip to Savannah would complete without a visit to the city’s historic center, a charming, incredibly safe place that is easy for solo travelers to explore.

You could happily spend hours here, walking amongst the historic buildings and the enormous oak trees, with their characteristic Spanish moss.

While you’re here you can also visit a wealth of different filming locations and sit on Forest Gump’s bench in Chippewa Square, visit the house from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil , or explore the wedding chapel, on Tybee Island, from The Last Song .

Also don’t forget to sample some local delicacies from the famous confectionery – Byrd Cookie Company.   Trust me, the selection of goodies here is huge, with the Scottish Oatmeals being my personal favorite.

You also can’t miss River Street Sweet, which is home to the most famous candy store in all of Savannah (No matter what, get the beyond delicious pralines).

And if you can, do try and visit River Street in the evening, when you can listen to live music, get a hot dog from a food truck, and grab a local souvenir.

26. Blue Ridge, Georgia

The historic, Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

By: Bret of Blue Ridge Mountains Travel Guide

Located in northern Georgia, at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains , is the tiny town of Blue Ridge.

Encompassing a mere 2.4 square miles of land, and with a population of less than 1500 people, this quaint village sits adjacent to the Tennessee River watershed in the north and the Alabama River watershed in the south.

Blue Ridge is also surrounded by the mountains of the Chattahoochee National Forest, and offers visitors endless opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Which is precisely what makes this friendly, welcoming town such a great place for solo travelers.

Love hiking?   Then explore the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail and check out some of the gorgeous waterfalls that can be found in the Vogel and Amicalola Falls State Parks.

Enjoy being near the water?   Then stop by Lake Blue Ridge and do some fishing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, or boating. You could also try tubing or fly fishing, for freshwater trout, along the Ellijay and Toccoa Rivers.

Additionally there are plenty of cozy mountain cabins that are available for rent, as well as some amazing hotels that you can stay in, like the Douglas Inn and the historic Blue Ridge Inn B&B.   This quaint little town also has some fantastic restaurants for you to enjoy, like Mike’s Trackside BBQ, Harvest on Main, and the aptly-named Southern Charm.

Whatever you do though be sure to take a ride on the famous, 125- year-old, Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. It takes visitors on a picturesque, 13-mile journey along the beautiful Toccoa River, to the twin border towns of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee.

27. Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs, Arkansas is one of the best places to travel alone in the US. This spot is famous for its hot springs. Duh! No brainer right! I’m sure the name gave it away. Anyways, if you want some alone time where you can unwind and just connect with yourself, then this is the place to visit.

Just think about going to Bathhouse Row which has 8 bath houses. These date back to the early 19th and 20th century and make great places for a solo stop. Otherwise head to Garvan Woodland gardens for a nice leisurely stroll. The bonsai garden has a lot to see!

If that’s not something you want to do, swap Garvan Woodland gardens with Hot Springs National park. A great tip is to head to the visitor center at Fordyce Bathhouse. It offers free tours of the National park. Once you are done hiking along the trails, you head back to Bathhouse row for another soak!

28. Seattle, Washington

Seattle is one of the big cities that are perfect for anyone who is interested in traveling alone in the US. First off, it has all the amenities that every big city has. Think of museums, amazing food, good shopping, lots of great restaurants and more. One of the top things to do in Seattle is to head to the top of the Space Needle. This is where you will get a bird’s eye view of the Seattle skyline.

Don’t forget to head to Pike Place Market. It is always bustling and it will definitely make you feel like one with the crowd. Here you can get a lot of great handmade souvenirs, amazing local food and more. While you are there, make sure not to forget the underground speciality shops!

Now if you want to get away from the city, then head to Olympic National Park where you can enjoy the calm forests and trails. Hiking is something that is popular in the region but make sure that you check the weather before you head out on the trails!

Solo travel can be intimidating. Whether you're heading to a city in your own country or across the globe, traveling alone can bring up a wealth of concerns — from the awkwardness of dining on your own to more serious issues of safety, especially for women. But despite any nervousness or uncertainty, traveling solo can be one of the most freeing and rewarding experiences, allowing you to immerse yourself in the community and stumble upon those moments of cross-cultural connection organically.

Choosing the right destination is key, so we've rounded up some of the best destinations around the world for women to travel solo.

Between exploring the charming streets of Reykjavik, chasing the northern lights , and driving the famous Ring Road, solo female travelers can have an unforgettable trip in Iceland and feel safe doing so. The country has consistently ranked first on both the Institute for Economics and Peace's Global Peace Index and the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report, so visitors can rest assured that safety and gender equality are prized in this naturally stunning destination. Solo tourists can head out into the wilderness via well-traveled (often busy, even) hiking trails and make friends with locals and fellow foreigners alike.

2. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is an extremely walkable city, and you're unlikely to get lost as long as you have a map of some kind. You can window shop along Las Ramblas, stroll down the beach boardwalk, and wander through the Gaudi-designed Park Güell while taking in the gardens and claiming panoramic views of the city for yourself.

The dining options are conducive to solo travel, too. Instead of sitting by your lonesome in a dining room, you can take your paella al fresco at one of the many waterfront restaurants (people-watching is built-in entertainment) or opt for a counter seat at a tapas bar.

3. Seattle, Washington, United States

Thanks to the omnipresence of Seattle's coffee culture , a solo diner (or drinker) is not an uncommon sight. Plus, the city's proliferation of cafes means there's a rest stop around every corner to break up visits to Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, or the campy Museum of Pop Culture , aka "MoPOP." The compact downtown area makes it easy for visitors to zip between attractions, restaurants, and shops on foot — and anything that is slightly farther is accessible by the easy-to-use Link light rail.

4. Munich, Germany

The jolly German mentality shines through in this Bavarian city, where tourists and locals bond over brötchen in mom-and-pop bakeries and pints in the biergartens. Although Oktoberfest happens only in the fall (and does not lend itself to a solo experience, per se), the beer halls in Munich maintain that same kind of festive ambience throughout the year. Hofbräuhaus is, hands down, the most famous and guaranteed to contain an abundance of other tourists. Fellow travelers can also be found climbing the Olympiapark tower ( Olympiaturm ), the top of which provides views extending as far as the Alps.

5. Dubrovnik, Croatia

The rise in Croatian tourism has improved the ease of travel, and the country's low crime rate heightens the appeal. Protected by 6,365 feet of pristine walls, the oceanfront medieval city of Dubrovnik gives you history, culture, and beautiful beaches all in one destination. Its cobblestone streets guide visitors to artisanal shops and local eateries, while a walk along the walls offers spectacular bird's-eye views of the Adriatic coastline. Just a few minutes from Old Town, there are plenty of opportunities for kayaking and snorkeling via tours and rentals offered right on the beach.

6. Austin, Texas, United States

Austin's festival culture makes it easy to get pulled in multiple directions, but it's also a great way to meet new people. There's plenty to see and do, whether you're checking out live music or eating your way through Tex-Mex and BBQ restaurants and food trucks. When you need a little quiet time, head downtown for a walking tour, or find a spot to watch the Congress Avenue Bridge bats soar.

Austin is often ranked as one of the safest big cities in the U.S. Note, though, that the ubiquity of booze here can be a blessing or a curse. While it keeps the streets populated (and therefore generally safe) at night, alcohol can lead to crime even within tourist circles, so exercise caution while participating in Austin's lively bar scene.

7. Salzburg, Austria

Overlooked by the Hohensalzburg Fortress and bisected by the Salzach River, Mozart's hometown has storybook allure. After reliving scenes from "The Sound of Music" at Mirabell Gardens and Nonnberg Abbey, relax with a coffee on the terrace of Cafe Tomaselli or a pint in the 1,400-seat outdoor area of Austria's biggest biergarten, Augustiner Bräu . Cyclists should take note: While the entire city is walkable, Salzburg is also one of the country's most bike-friendly cities. More than 100 miles of cycle paths mean you can pack way more into a day and get around more efficiently (and economically) as a solo traveler.

8. Taipei, Taiwan

The capital of Taiwan offers an ideal mix of history and modernity. You'll find temples and skyscrapers, contemporary malls and traditional night markets — perfect for making a meal out of snacks while shopping for accessories and souvenirs. Taipei has the bustle of a major Asian metropolis but with important urban comforts as well. Street signage and public transportation all have names in English — and even though crime is overall low in the country, the metro system has " Safe Waiting Zones " marked on the platforms, which are monitored closely by video feed to protect passengers at night.

9. Copenhagen, Denmark

In the quirky Danish capital, you'll find plenty of centrally located hotels offering single rooms, each providing the perfect jumping-off point for Copenhagen adventures. Must-visit spots include Nyhavn, the iconic canal lined with multicolored houses (opt for a tour for a closer look at the city's waterways), and Tivoli Gardens, a historic amusement park. Stop for a quick solo bite at the TorvehallerneKBH food hall. With Danish culture valuing the importance of community dining, solo travelers should never feel alone.

10. Melbourne, Australia

This Australian metropolis is one of the most livable cities in the world, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. Throw in a free tourist tram that reaches the major sights — including the Queen Victoria Market, Carlton Gardens, and Federation Square — and Melbourne's got simplicity and safety all rolled up in one. Because Australia offers a Working Holiday visa allowing visitors between 18 and 35 to work in the country for a year, the city is especially popular with young expats.

11. Stockholm, Sweden

Sweden's safe, accessible cities are ideal for solo-traveling women. The cobblestone streets of Stockholm's Old Town, or Gamla Stan, are home to coffee shops, restaurants, stores, and even a castle, prompting hours of exploring on foot. The modern areas surrounding it are also easy to navigate through a string of metro stations, which double as art exhibits with their over-the-top murals, mosaics, and sculptures.

12. Okinawa, Japan

For a taste of Japan without the overwhelming hustle, head to Naha, the capital of the Okinawa islands. The monorail is super accessible, linking the airport to the city center as well as the popular Shuri Castle. And within walking distance of the city center are the Naminoue city beach, Tsuboya pottery district, and Makishi Public Market, where the pull-up-a-chair stands are primed for solo dining.

13. Norway’s Fjords

Lara D'agostino/Travel + Leisure

There's no better environment for self reflection than the soothing blue-and-green canvas of the Norwegian fjords. In Bergen, you can ride up the Fløibanen funicular or embark on a daylong journey on the Bergen Railway. Head to Gudvangen and take a cruise through Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. Equally impressive as the waterfalls-at-every-glance boat ride is the Flåm Railway trip, with views outside the window changing from seascapes to snow-capped mountains. This trip is for the solo traveler seeking peace in nature rather than busy biergartens and the like.

14. Washington, D.C., United States

The manageable size and easy layout of the U.S. capital make it an ideal stomping ground for solo travelers. In addition to exploring the memorials along the National Mall, you can take in the exhibits at the many Smithsonian museums (plus the zoo), all walkable and offering free admission. If you want to explore further, it's easy to get on two wheels at one of the hundreds of Capital Bikeshare stations, which extend to Arlington, Alexandria, and Montgomery County. Alternatively, take advantage of the efficient D.C. Metro for day trips to nearby areas.

15. London, England

For European charm without the culture shock or language barrier, there's London. Visitors could spend days just roaming along the River Thames, snacking in Borough Market, and admiring the eclectic houseboats, or strolling through the Royal Parks and eyeing luxury items at Harrods. After dark, grab a seat alongside locals at a pub or catch a show in the West End, then enjoy a late-night bite in nearby Chinatown. The endless sights and entertainment are easily connected via the London Underground, better known as the Tube.
