LES CLAYPOOL's FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE To Reunite After 20 Years For Massive Spring/Summer 2023 Tour

After a 20-year hiatus, LES CLAYPOOL'S FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE has announced its long-awaited return with the massive, 41-date "Summer Of Green" tour 2023, which will mark the band's first appearances since summer 2003. Kicking off in Stateline, Nevada on Wednesday, May 17 before winding its way from coast-to-coast, the tour will feature several festival appearances, including the Summer Camp Music Festival , the Mountain Music Festival , the Riverbend Music Festival , and the Peach Music Festival . Featuring Les Claypool (bass), Sean Lennon (guitar), Harry Waters (keys), Paulo Baldi (drums), Mike Dillon (percussion),and Skerik (horns),the set will include a full performance of PINK FLOYD 's iconic tenth studio album "Animals" , which was famously captured on the band's second 2001 live recording "Live Frogs Set 2" .

"In an age of calibrated chaos, moral constipation, and conspiranoia, it is reassuring to know that certain frogs can and do fly," Claypool comments.

Select June performances will include a co-headlining set with Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew 's "Remain In Light" tour, which finds the TALKING HEADS members performing songs from a monumental period of the band's history alongside a powerhouse band. Additional support throughout the tour include FISHBONE , NEAL FRANCIS , BUDOS BAND , W.I.T.C.H. and MOON DUO .

A limited pre-sale, including VIP upgrade options, will go on sale February 1 at 10 a.m. local time, using the code WHAMOLA. General public on sale is this Friday, February 3 at 10 a.m. local time.

Formed by Claypool in the summer of 2000 during a short break from PRIMUS , the FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE made its debut appearance at the Mountain Aire Festival before embarking on several celebrated U.S. tours. Described by Claypool as "kind of a KING CRIMSON -meets- PINK FLOYD -meets- Frank Zappa -type thing," the band released two live albums in 2001, as well as a studio album "Purple Onion" in 2002. The band's most recent performance took place on May 10, 2003 at the House of Blues in Orlando, Florida.

The return of the FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE follows a busy year for Claypool , who in addition to performing with BASTARD JAZZ on NYE and throughout winter 2022, traveled the country with PRIMUS for the band's wildly popular "A Tribute To Kings" tour, and appeared alongside WEEN at Comedy Central's "South Park: 25th Anniversary Concert" at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Last year also saw the release of PRIMUS 's first new music in more than five years, the sprawling three-song "Conspiranoid" EP, which included the epic 11-minute opening track "Conspiranoia" and second single "Follow The Fool" .

Claypool is one of the most unlikely success stories in entertainment history. His trademark voice, thumping bass lines and unique worldview have become the calling cards for a number of wildly successful and influential albums in the last two decades. But through his myriad of musical and creative projects, Claypool has also become a favorite of jam banders, funk connoisseurs and pretty much everything in between.

"Let's put it this way … I think, with PRIMUS and without, I've played every music festival in the last ten years, except Lilith Fair ," he comments. "You could say I'm the guy who doesn't fit in anywhere, but a little bit everywhere."

“In an age of calibrated chaos, moral constipation, and conspiranoia, it is reassuring to know that certain frogs can and do fly,” Claypool said of the reunion in a press release.

Along with the co-headlining dates with Harrison and Belew (a brief contributor to Talking Heads, in addition to his notable time in King Crimson), the “Summer of Green” tour boasts a notable group of rotating support acts including Fishbone, Neal Francis, Budos Band, W.I.T.C.H., and Moon Duo.

[UPDATE 5/15/23]:   Les Claypool announced on Monday that saxophonist  Skerik will not appear with the  Fearless Flying Frog Brigade for the start of the band’s extensive 2023  Summer of Green Tour as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury. The band, which has not performed live in 20 years, will rely on a rotating cast of “random ‘special’ guests” until Skerik is cleared to return to the Frog Brigade’s ranks. The injury previously forced Skerik to pull out of his various scheduled gigs during New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival .

As Claypool noted in a social media post , “FROG DOWN!! FROG DOWN!! As Colonel of this here Fearless Flying Frog Brigade it falls upon me to inform all of you ‘frog-heads’ of the unfortunate setback to one of our troops. The mighty ‘horn-honking’ Skerik has sustained a shoulder injury which is keeping him away from his Brigade duties for the time being. It is a mighty blow to the Brigade but, like good frog troopers, we are forging on with all dispatch. It is our hope that Lt. Skirackington, as he is known amongst the troops, will be back in the ranks and armed with his horn soon. Until then we will be hosting random ‘special’ guests to enhance the Frog Brigade, Summer of Green experience.”

[1/31/23]: After a 20-year break, Les Claypool is set to reconvene his  Fearless Flying Frog Brigade for an extensive 2023 outing billed as the  Summer of Green Tour . Each night on the 41-date tour will feature a complete live performance of Pink Floyd classic  Animals , which was previously captured on the Frog Brigade’s two-part 2001 live album, Live Frogs .

The band lineup for the Summer of Green will feature a mix of Frog Brigade vets, family ties, and other Claypool collaborators. Guitarist Sean Lennon (the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono and Les’ counterpart in The Claypool Lennon Delirium ), keyboardist Harry Waters (the son of Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters ), and drummer Paulo Baldi (of The Claypool Lennon Delirium and CAKE ) will make their maiden Frog Brigade flights in 2023, while returning members Mike Dillon (percussion) and Skerik (horns) will bring seasoned Claypool know-how along with continued creative momentum from their recent Bastard Jazz improv sessions.

Select June performances will include a co-headlining set with Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew ’s Remain In Light tour , which finds the Talking Heads members performing songs from a monumental period of the band’s history with Cool Cool Cool as their backing band. Additional supporting acts at select dates throughout the tour include Fishbone , Neal Francis , Budos Band , W.I.T.C.H. , and Moon Duo .

“In an age of calibrated chaos, moral constipation, and conspiranoia , it is reassuring to know that certain frogs can and do fly,” Claypool said along with the tour’s announcement.

brigade tour

Formed by Claypool in the summer of 2000 during a hiatus from Primus , the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade made its debut appearance at the Mountain Aire Festival before embarking on several celebrated U.S. tours. Described by Les himself as “kind of a King Crimson meets Pink Floyd meets Frank Zappa type thing,” the band released two live albums in 2001, as well as a studio album, Purple Onion , in 2002. The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade’s last performance took place on May 10th, 2003.

On Wednesday, May 17th, 20 years and one week after that last show, Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade will take to the sky once again in Stateline, NV. The tour will circle the country from there throughout May, June, and July, making stops in various notable markets and headlining a number of summer music festivals including Chillicothe, IL’s Summer Camp Music Festival (5/27), Oak Hill, WV’s  Mountain Music Festival (6/3), and Scranton, PA’s  The Peach Music Festival (7/1).

“Let’s put it this way … I think, with Primus and without, I’ve played every music festival in the last ten years, except Lilith Fair,” Claypool commented on his unique yet expansive cross-section of styles and fanbases. “You could say I’m the guy who doesn’t fit in anywhere, but a little bit everywhere.”

Les Claypool may have waited 20 years to reconvene the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, but he has never stopped churning out new ideas. In addition to touring heavily as part of Primus’s A Tribute to Kings trek and taking part in the South Park 25th anniversary shows at  Red Rocks Amphitheatre , Claypool has played gigs with a number of his live creations in the last few years, from Bastard Jazz to The Claypool Lennon Delirium to Oysterhead .

A limited pre-sale for the Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade Summer of Green Tour 2023 will begin on Wednesday, February 1st at 10:00 a.m. local venue time using the code WHAMOLA. General public on-sale will follow on Friday, February 3rd at 10:00 a.m. local time.

Justin Timberlake gets soulful in Seattle

Michael Rietmulder

Concert review

Justin Timberlake was in his element. Gliding, sliding and stepping across the stage like an air-walking Morris Day out in front of an 11-piece band and brigade of dancers during an opening “No Angels” on Thursday.

The disco-pop romper off Timberlake’s new album, “Everything I Thought it Was,” is in step with the disco revival of the last few years but took on a more vintage flavor while kicking off his first of two Climate Pledge Arena shows.

“There ain’t no angels here on the dance floor,” Timberlake sang, though he and his dancers sure floated like they had halos over their heads.

More than 20 years since going solo from ‘N Sync, Timberlake arrived in Seattle, just the second stop on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, no longer at the center of the pop universe — and that’s perfectly OK, maybe even for the best.

Despite some savory moments, both this year’s “Everything I Thought it Was” and his previous album, the awkwardly framed “Man of the Woods,” were met with critical shrugs and the court of public opinion has shifted on Timberlake since the days when he had America in stitches with “Saturday Night Live” skits and palling around with celebrity bud Jimmy Fallon. Not that it’s diminished his star power, which is still bright enough to pack an arena — twice. (Timberlake, who hit the stage shortly after 9 p.m., will tackle Climate Pledge Arena again Friday night.)

None of the external noise or think-piece narratives mattered when the stage lights hit and Timberlake, who’s been performing since he was 11, does what he does best. One of this century’s most well-rounded entertainers, the classic song-and-dance man is cut from a cloth that doesn’t exist in the contemporary pop landscape quite the same way it once did.

The R&B-influenced prince of pop and sultan of FCC-friendly innuendo is a direct disciple of Michael Jackson. But he was equal parts James Brown on a punchy “LoveStoned,” the Timbaland-produced hit off Timberlake’s second solo album “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” Timberlake has more intentionally claimed his Memphis roots in recent years and his crack band the Tennessee Kids gave the mid-2000s cut a ‘60s soul revue appeal.

For better or worse, much of Timberlake’s best work is timestamped to the 2000s, thanks in part to the way his frequent collaborators Timbaland and the Neptunes defined the era’s sound. Thanks largely to the Tennessee Kids, many of the songs were unbound to the production trappings of the day, retrofit with timeless organic textures.

After a crushing “Cry Me a River,” which could have hit an even higher gear had Timberlake not taken it easy on those signature falsetto choruses, the sprawling Tennessee Kids got time to shine on “Let the Groove Get In.” The skittering, chiming percussion boiled over into a stomp-around jam, hitting like a horns-blasting march down Beale Street. Later, during a light-footed newbie “Play” drawing on ‘80s electro-funk, the horn section and a crew of dancers joined Timberlake in a full procession to a secondary stage on the opposite end of the arena.

Hopping to the floor to make his way through the crowd, JT stopped to greet a fan who was cradling a stocky little bulldog. “Honestly, this is the first dog I’ve had at my show,” a surprised Timberlake remarked. “Is this a Seattle thing?”

Timberlake and the band were most in their bag mining the soul, funk and disco sounds of yore, at one point beefing up the candy-shop love song “Pusher Love Girl” with swelling gospel vocals and doo-woppy charm. But it was hardly their only look.

“Sanctified” packed a full-blown arena-rock crunch, and late into his nearly two-hour set, Timberlake broke out an acoustic guitar for stripped-down renditions of this year’s “Selfish” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around.”

While the focus was kept on Timberlake and crew’s shoulder-popping choreography, a giant rectangular LED box that hovered and shifted above the stage was the centerpiece of the tour’s production. After a breezy “Rock Your Body” and embracing 2000s club hedonism on “SexyBack,” a harnessed-up Timberlake returned for his “Mirrors” encore atop the LED vessel that carried him above the crowd. With arms spread wide, JT leaned over the edge as the illuminated platform tilted to a 45-degree angle, making like Kate Winslet on the Titanic for a dramatic finish.

When Timberlake reunited with ‘N Sync (after years of resisting fans’ pleas) to record “Better Place” for the “Trolls Band Together” soundtrack and the song “Paradise” off his new album, some critics viewed it as a tacit conceit that Timberlake could no longer generate the same level of fervor on his own. A friendlier read is that the former boy bander and Mouseketeer, now a husband and father in his 40s like much of Thursday’s millennial-heavy crowd, is comfortable enough in his career arc that he no longer feels the need to distance himself from his past.

While both are likely true to some degree, Timberlake came off self-aware and self-assured on Thursday, joking as he briefly took a seat before a steamy dance routine during “Technicolor” that “I’m 43, so I gotta sit down for a second.”

At various points in the night, a reflective Timberlake paused to address his journey with the sort of clarity and gratitude that comes with age and stability. “If you’ve been rocking with me for two decades, almost three decades, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said after jokingly wishing a millennial fan a happy 21st birthday.

At the end of the day, that’s the connection that matters.

Russia rattles nukes as french president mulls sending troops to kyiv.

French and Polish troops practice river crossings somewhere in Europe.

French President Emmanuel Macron has, over the past few months, mulled the dispatch of Western ground troops into Ukraine, saying, recently, in an interview with The Economist , “I’m not ruling anything out, because we are facing someone who is not ruling anything out.”

Few in Europe and the U.S. embraced Macron’s suggestion, but the French President’s overall logic was sound enough for Russia to respond today, announcing tactical nuclear weapons drills that target “provocative statements and threats from certain Western officials.”

Given Russia’s nuclear saber-rattling, Macron’s rhetorical gambit demonstrates that the mere act of even discussing a hypothetical intervention by Western troops worries an increasingly brittle Russia. If debate on a NATO intervention raises the pressure on Russia’s government to the point it acts out, real, concrete steps to intercede, putting NATO “boots on the ground”, may do a lot to end Russia’s disruptive, decade-long campaign to subjugate Kyiv.

There’s no immediate need for Western troops to take combat roles. In Ukraine, Western or other allied help with border security, logistics and administration can free an enormous number of Ukrainian troops from ancillary support missions, allowing the country to better handle front-line challenges.

A physical, “boots-on-the-ground” deployment of Western troops into Ukraine offers Kyiv a much-needed morale and battlefield capability boost. Intervention by Western troops—coupled with viable threats elsewhere on the Russian-NATO border—puts real pressure on Russia’s beleaguered dictator, Vladimir Putin. In Ukraine, foreign troops complicate Russia’s targeting efforts. They may even encourage Russia to study their unfavorable strategic situation and get real about ending their illegal invasion of a free European country and halting their unremitting—and very warlike—campaign against democracies across the globe.

U.S. Troops build a pier off Gaza.

Risk To Western Troops Is Low:

Certainly, Western troops operating in Ukraine will be at some risk. But Western troops often operate under perilous circumstances, helping endangered governments or people.

Militaries can handle the risks in Ukraine’s rear areas. Right now, as the United States prepares to begin operation of a massive, 1,800-foot-long floating pier off Gaza, the Secretary of Defense is unable to guarantee deployed U.S. troops from the Army’s 7 th Transportation Brigade won’t be fired upon as they bring much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The U.S. troops on the Gaza pier will be in a dangerous situation. With Israel and Hamas both continuing their war, U.S. troops offer an enormous high-value/high-status target. Hamas has already attacked the pier’s presumed operational area, and Israel, charged with securing the pier area, can’t help but wonder if a nihilistic Hamas strike on U.S. troops might deepen U.S. support of Israel.

The Gaza humanitarian mission is a complicated and fraught situation, but, despite the real risks to U.S. soldiers and sailors, America moved forward on the pier with little debate or hesitation. Ukraine offers a similar risky situation, with U.S. troops working, under hazard, to support a beleaguered population. An operation to support Ukraine, couched in similar humanitarian assistance terms as the Gaza pier effort, can be done just as quickly and with little debate as well.

Nuclear Saber-Rattling?

The idea of a confrontation between nuclear-armed states is always disconcerting to the West. In response to President Macron, Russia, wasted no time in announcing it would be carrying out exercises to “increase the readiness of non-strategic nuclear weapons forces to carry out combat missions…in response to provocative statements and threats of individual Western officials against the Russian Federation.”

But fears that Western engagement—even fighting—in Ukraine will lead to a nuclear confrontation are overblown. Russia has long used nuclear weaponry as a provocative cudgel, threatening and unveiling doomsday devices well before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine got underway. Bluster is a common Russian tactic.

Despite the West’s delicate efforts to avoid a nuclear confrontation, Russia has shown no hesitation in striking out at nuclear-armed rivals.

In nuclear-armed England, Russia employed chemical and radiological weaponry to assassinate residents and citizens. A nuclear exchange didn’t happen.

Russia has been at odds with nuclear-armed France for years without sparking a nuclear standoff. Russian mercenaries, backed by a comprehensive and dirty Russian disinformation campaign, have, over the past several years, chased French military forces out of the Sahel region in Africa.

Russian sources have, since January, claimed French mercenaries were operating in Ukraine and that Russian forces had carried out a “precision strike” that killed “French mercenaries.” Rather than turn to nuclear weapons, according to Politico , the French turned to the diplomatic option, summoning the Russian ambassador “over the deaths of two French humanitarian workers in Ukraine and disinformation campaigns targeting France.”

U.S. and Russian forces have come to blows and have even fought . In early 2023, Russian Su-27 jets brought down a U.S. MQ-9 surveillance drone. And, in 2018, in Syria, Russian mercenaries squared off against U.S. Special Forces troops, at an estimated cost of around 300 Russian casualties (Russia acknowledged the loss of only five citizens). Even this direct confrontation did not turn into an exercise in nuclear brinksmanship.

After so many Russian provocations, it is a wonder that the West hasn’t done more to turn up the heat on Putin’s regime, giving Russia a dose of its own saber-rattling medicine in the form of a direct, boots-on-the-ground intervention in Ukraine.

Troop Discussions Force Consideration Of Other Options

In short, any open theoretical discussion of a Western military intervention in Ukraine is healthy. Marcon’s musings, though somewhat shocking to some, prepares NATO for tough options in the future. With Russia on a war footing, there is no viable reason as to why Russia, if it takes Kyiv, would stop at Ukraine’s borders.

By making a “boots-on-the-ground” intervention in Ukraine a real and concrete option, the prospect of a wider wartime-level of commitment can force Europe and others to get real about exploring less directly confrontational options, like remedying Europe’s increasingly lackadaisical approach to sanctions enforcement and Russian asset seizures.

If Europe is unwilling to take the tough economic steps required to really squeeze Russia into ending their invasion—and halting Russia’s unremitting—and rather warlike—effort to destabilize Europe and other Western democracies—without the threat of war, the only options for Europe will be to either get directly involved in the fight or to get about surrendering to Russian-style authoritarianism.
