Art’s Dune Tours: The Best Way To Explore Cape Cod’s Sand Dunes

While Cape Cod is known for its stunning beaches and coastline, the sand dunes in this region are an equally incredible landscape to experience. For the last 75 years, Art’s Dune Tours has been providing unforgettable adventures by taking people out into the Province Lands dunes, and showing them some of the most unique landscapes in the entire country.

If you’re planning a trip to Cape Cod, and are looking to get out into the sand dunes, this post is all about what to expect with Art’s Dune Tours, and why it should be on your itinerary.

Art's Dune Tours is one of the most exciting experiences you can have on Cape Cod.

This tour was hosted by the Cape Cod Tourism Board. All opinions are my own.

The History Of Art’s Dune Tours & Provincetown’s Sand Dunes

Art’s Dune Tours started with a man named Art and his 1936 Ford Woody. Art began as a taxi service that brought people out to the dunes, which eventually evolved into a tour company. Stemmed from his passion for the region, and his love and knowledge of the dunes, Art’s Dune Tours quickly became one of the most exciting things to do in Provincetown. Art continued to do tours for 50 years, and his son, Rob, shared that he truly loved every minute of it.

Rob now owns the company, and he’s just as passionate as his father, and excited to take people out into the dunes to provide not just a tour, but a meaningful experience.

The landscapes you'll experience on a tour with Art's Dune Tours are otherworldly.

In 1961, when President Kennedy established the Cape Cod National Seashore, this land became protected from any further development, and its natural beauty has remained untouched since. During the tour, I learned that 70% of Provincetown is sand, and also that the Cape Cod National Seashore is the largest protected coast in the U.S. Special permits are needed to drive in the dunes, and with some of the dunes reaching 110 feet tall, this is really quite an amazing experience!

During the tour, you'll be able to get out of the car at some of the best viewing locations in the dunes for some awesome picture opportunities.

What To Expect On Your Art’s Dune Tour

In a nutshell, lots of fun, incredible views and interesting stories about the history of the dunes.

Tours will start at Art’s Dune Tour offices in Provincetown, a short walk from MacMillan Pier, and most tours last about one hour or so. From there, you’ll hop into one of their Suburbans, and head toward the dunes, which are only a 5-minute or so drive away. Each vehicle seats up to 6 people, and are equipped with air conditioning for a comfortable ride.

I was so excited to get started! Art's Dune Tours are all provided inside comfortable suburban SUV's for a comfortable experience.

Once you arrive at the entrance for the dunes, you’ll stop for a quick moment to allow the guide to let air out of the tires so the vehicle can easily navigate the soft sand. And then you’re off! You’ll ride up and down the dunes (some of them pretty steep) pass by the dune shacks, stop to admire the local foliage and have moments to get out of the car and take some photos.

The dune shacks are one of the most famous things in Cape Cod, and you'll hear all about their history on the tour.

Tour guides for Art’s will share so much interesting history of the Province Lands, dunes, artist shacks and local ecosystem. I was lucky enough to be on a tour with Rob himself, and he was able to point out and share his knowledge on all the beautiful flora that exists amongst the dunes, including mosses, lichen, rugosas and so much more. We even got to pass a natural cranberry bog, which was surprising to see in the middle of these vast dunes.

The vegetation that exists out in the dunes is really quite interesting, and your tour guide will be able to point out everything to you.

The History Of The Dune Shacks In Provincetown

Wondering what the story is with the dune shacks? Great! I’d love to tell you all about them. You’ll also hear many more stories on your tour, but here are some highlights.

The dune shacks are quite famous in Provincetown, and throughout all of Cape Cod, and date back to the 1920s. The 19 shacks were built by members of the Coast Guard as a place for their families to stay during visits, or as a place of rest on their days off. They’re scattered amongst the sand dunes, and many of them offer breathtaking views of the coastline.

You'll pass by a few dune shacks on your tour with Art's Dune Tours, and learn about how they were built, and what they're used for today.

As the Provincetown artist colony gained popularity, artists began using the shacks during their Cape Cod visits. Famed artists and writers like E.E. Cummings, Jackson Pollock, Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams, Harry Kemp and Normal Mailer have all stayed in the dune shacks. In fact, Jack Kerouac wrote part of On The Road while staying in one of the shacks.

Many of the shacks became property of the government in 1961 when Kennedy established the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Can You Stay In The Provincetown Dune Shacks?

Yes you can, but it will require some work and a bit of luck. The government partners with non-profit organizations to host local and aspiring artists and writers in the shacks. Imagine, as an artist or writer, the amazing inspiration you’d get by being surrounded by such remote, natural beauty just outside your door each day.

Would you stay in a Provincetown dune shack? There is no indoor plumbing or electricity, but as you can imagine, the views are breathtaking.

Those hoping to stay in one of the dune shacks can apply for residency, and applications are accepted by a lottery system (this is where the luck comes into play). Samples of your work are required during the application process.

Some things to keep in mind to appreciate a residency at the shacks even more: There is no indoor plumbing or electricity at the shacks. And they’re very secluded, meaning you’ve got quite the hike through soft sand if you’re in need of additional food or supplies. It’s also common to encounter wildlife like snakes and bugs during your stay. It’s not for the faint of heart. But it’s also considered an honor to stay in one of the famed shacks.

Do The Tours Harm The Local Ecosystem?

Absolutely not, and this one of the first questions I asked on the tour. Art’s Dune Tours has to get a special permit each year for every vehicle in their fleet, and the tours stay on the access “road,” which is the main path that runs through the dunes. Guides don’t stray from the main path to keep the vegetation in-tact.

You'll see so much natural vegetation out in the dunes.

During the tour, you’ll witness the deep respect between tour guides and the dunes, and one of the main goals of the tours is to educate visitors on how important this area is for the local ecosystem, as well as what a special place it is. This was the most impressive part of the tour for me.

I was so surprised to pass through this tree-lined path out in the dunes.

Art’s Dune Tour Options

Art’s Dune Tours offers a few different options, with some really great add-on experiences. Below is a breakdown of tours you can arrange with them.

Daily Tours

This is the tour I experienced, which will take you around the dunes for about an hour. These tours run daily at 9:45a, 11a, 1p, 2:30p and 4p from May 1-October 31. Times may change a bit later in the fall season, so be sure to give them a call to confirm if you plan to visit after Labor Day.

Sunset Tours

There are 3 different Sunset Tour options to customize your perfect evening. You can go for either a regular sunset tour, a tour with dinner, and finally, a tour with both dinner and a bonfire. For these tours, you’ll ride through the dunes for 1 hour, and then drive down to the beach to watch the sunset, have dinner and start the bonfire.

Art’s Dune Tours also offers a few other options that include art, photography, kayaking and ventures out to Race Point Lighthouse. Click here to check out these tours on their website.

Art's Dune Tours offers a lot of different tour options that you can customize for your perfect experience.

How Much Do Art’s Dune Tours Cost?

Daily tours cost $38.11 per person (as of 2022), which includes taxes and fees, and there is a 4-person minimum for each tour to operate.

For sunset tours, prices start at $56.65 per person (as of 2022), and will go up from there if you choose to add on dinner or the bonfire experience.

For all other tour experiences, call them directly for pricing.

Does Art’s Dune Tours Operate If It’s Raining?

They sure do! In fact, the day of my tour, it was drizzling rain off and on, and it was still an incredible experience. Tours run rain or shine since you’re inside a vehicle, and protected from the elements.

Art's Dune Tours operate rain or shine, since they're inside a vehicle.

Are Art’s Dune Tours Suitable For Children?

Definitely. If you need a car seat, you’ll need to bring one with you. But other than that, this is a really fun adventure that children will love.

Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

Ah, the dunes of the Cape... they've been written about, sung about... and they're probably one of the first images that pop into your head when you envision Cape Cod .

And yet, many tourists visit Cape Cod without ever really experiencing one of New England's most remarkable natural wonders.

It's easy to get caught up in all of the other enticements of the Cape... sandy, family beaches; villages teeming with cute little shops; seaside seafood shanties... but you haven't truly been to Cape Cod until you've done the dunes.

Of the 44,600 acres that comprise the Cape Cod National Seashore—New England's most visited national park —4,000 of them make up two-thirds of the town of Provincetown at the very tip of the Cape. It is here that you'll find the most dramatic dune views. The enormous sand deposits were left behind when Ice Age glaciers receded. It's difficult to imagine, but the dunes were covered with a layer of soil and densely forested before the arrival of European settlers. Deforestation led to massive shifting of sand as the winds sculpted the exposed landscape. Efforts to stabilize the dunes began in the 1800s, and the National Park Service has continued beach grass planting efforts since 1961, when the Cape Cod National Seashore was created.

Want to Experience the Dunes?

There are several ways to see the dunes, but by far the most entertaining is  Art's Dune Tours . This tour company has a history that is almost as long and storied as that of the dunes themselves. OK, I exaggerate a bit, but Art's Dune Tours has been in existence for 70 years.

Art Costa first began sharing the wonder of the dunes with Cape Cod tourists in 1946 in a 1936 Ford Woody. Today, the family business is run by Art's son, Rob, and he and a "cast" of tour leaders keep alive the tradition of taking small groups of seven to nine passengers out onto the dunes in four-wheel-drive Suburbans.

Now, you  can  go out on the dunes in your own four-wheel-drive vehicle, but obtaining a permit will cost you quite a bit of cash, there aren't exactly any road maps to follow and you'll have to entertain yourself with amusing anecdotes and corny jokes. It's much more relaxing and amusing to simply book passage with Art's Dune Tours, grab the camera and allow Rob or one of the other guides to regale you with tales of the dunes' animal and human inhabitants as you make tracks through the sandy turf.

For a preview of what you'll experience, or if you can't get to Cape Cod, join me as I set out with Rob on a daytime dune excursion. (I promise not to give away  too  many of the jokes in Rob's repertoire.)

All About Art's Dune Tours

Art's Dune Tours operates from April through mid-November, and in addition to one-hour, narrated tours throughout the day, you can also reserve your place on a two-hour Sunset Tour with or without a BBQ, sushi or clambake dinner. Adventure tours are also available for guests who'd like extra time to paint or photograph the dunes; who want to combine dune touring with sailing, kayaking or speed boating, or who want to catch and eat their own dinner. Private charters for weddings on the dunes or other events are also available.

Tours depart from 4 Standish Street in Provincetown—look for a small table set up on the sidewalk. Reservations are always a good idea, as tours only operate with a minimum number of passengers, and summertime can be quite busy. For reservations and pricing information, call 508-487-1950 or toll free, 800-894-1951. You can also book your tour online.

More Than Sand

First things first... arrive at Art's Dune Tours early for your tour, so you can secure a window seat. Rob Costa, our guide, explained that when 44,000 acres of Cape Cod coast were set aside in the 1960s for preservation and protection by the National Park Service, the local reaction was mixed. However, today, residents and visitors alike appreciate the beauty of what has been preserved. Fewer than 3,000 people live in Provincetown in the winter. The number of people in town swells to about 50,000 in the summer.

Did you think that sand was all we'd see on a Cape Cod dune tour? Au contraire! There are several historic buildings within the Cape Cod National Seashore, including the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station . Built circa 1897, the station was originally located at Nauset Beach in Chatham, where it housed US Coast Guard lifesaving crews and served as temporary shelter for rescued persons. Beach erosion necessitated relocation of the station, so it was moved by the National Park Service to Provincetown in 1977.

Are you interested in birdwatching? One of the unexpected sights on our trip was a pair of terns safeguarding their eggs, which were buried in the sand. We snuck up carefully in the Suburban so as not to frighten them away. Rob explained that terns come to the dunes of Cape Cod from as far away as South America to lay their eggs here.

Not the Pilgrims' Provincetown

The site of the Pilgrims' first landfall wasn't Plymouth: It was Provincetown. The dunes looked very different then, Rob explained. "The dunes were completely forested at one time." Of course, the Pilgrims chose not to stay in Provincetown, and they headed further up the Massachusetts coast to settle.

Rob explained the reason for the Pilgrims' decision: "Even back then, the shops were a bit expensive." Actually, their decision to move on was related to a lack of fresh water and farmable land. Later, Portuguese fishermen would settle the town and would turn Provincetown into a thriving fishing and whaling community. In fact, during Provincetown's golden years, residents had the highest average per capita income in all of Massachusetts.

The Landscape Changes, The Jokes Stay the Same

Beach grass helps to "anchor" the sand of the Cape Cod dunes, but there is still a subtle shifting of the landscape that is always occurring. Rob explained that his father, Art, started Art's Dune Tours in 1946 after he returned from World War II. He had worked for others before the war and was determined to own his own business when he returned. "He just loved taking people out here," Rob said. He added that his father told him if he were to follow in his footsteps, "You'll never get sick of what you're doing." And it appears that he doesn't, although he did tell us, "My jokes are always the same."

Rob stops the Suburban at prime viewing spots, where we are able to hop out and take pictures of the magnificent sand dunes of Cape Cod. It is difficult not to appreciate what a talented sculptor the wind can be.

During our excursion, the clouds seemed as if they were posing in order to complement the scenery. It is easy to see why this picturesque area was selected as the location for the filming of  The Thomas Crown Affair  in 1968. In fact, Rob explained that his father helped with transportation for the movie stars and crew. His mother, he said, still has a signed note from Steve McQueen thanking her for the coffeecake she baked for him. "Of course, my father had a big crush on Faye Dunaway, too," he said.

Dune Shacks

Interspersed among the dunes in Provincetown are a number of small, rustic shacks. The first dune shacks were built in the 1800s by the Humane Society in conjunction with lifesaving efforts, but as lifesaving personnel moved to more solid facilities, the shacks were discovered by artists and writers, who flocked to the dunes of the Cape in the 1930s and '40s for inspiration. Among the shacks' notable inhabitants were poets e.e. cummings, Harry Kemp and Mary Oliver; painters Edwin Dickinson, Boris Margo, Willem de Koonig and Jackson Pollock; and authors Eugene O'Neill, Jack Kerouac and Norman Mailer.

In 1989, the shacks were listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the National Park Service took over ownership of all but one. Rob, our Art's Dune Tours  guide, explained that several are still occupied by the original "squatters" and that others are leased by the Park Service to those who "bid" to obtain a 15-year lease. The cost is only about $3,000 per year plus maintenance of the shack, but before you get all excited, realize that these shacks have no electricity, no running water and outhouses. Also, the "bidding" process involves submission of an essay explaining why you'd want to live in a dune shack. "It goes to the people with the pen, not the dollar," Rob said. Five of the shacks are currently leased to non-profit groups that provide shorter " artist-in-residence " experiences for interested occupants.

As our dune tour continues, Rob takes a moment to stop the Suburban to tell us more about Kemp, the "poet of the dunes." Kemp was a dune shack inhabitant for about 40 years until his death in 1960. Costa recited a 1934 poem by Kemp titled, "The Last Return," written for the Coast Guard men who have steadfastly worked to save the lives of those shipwrecked on Cape Cod's coast.

Sayonara Sand Dunes

As we leave the ocean behind and begin to head away from the sand dunes, the vegetation gets thicker, punctuated with scrub pines. The one-hour tour seems over in almost no time at all. Rob says he and his employees at Art's Dune Tours in Provincetown take all variety of visitors out to see the dunes each day—"gay, straight, young, old, children, families, single people—it really is a good thing for everybody to do."

While a one-hour daytime tour of the sand dunes of Cape Cod is a wonderful way to "do the dunes," keep in mind that Art's Dune Tours does offer some other tour options that might provide an additional touch of fun or romance. Sunset tours provide stunning views and good food, too, as you enjoy a lobster clambake, barbecued chicken dinner or vegetarian or seafood sushi on a blanket spread out on the dunes. Race Point Lighthouse Tours are offered on Sundays. Private charters are available if you'd like to design your own outing. If you're an early riser, charter a sunrise tour in the wee hours of the morning and enjoy spectacular views as day arrives on Cape Cod.

Arts Dune Tours: The Ultimate Cape Cod Experience

Location: Provincetown, Massachusetts

The dunes of Cape Cod have drawn writers, artists and musicians for years. It’s desolate beauty has inspired some of our most well known songs and movies. The best way to visit the dunes is with Arts Dune Tours out of Provincetown.

provincetown dune tour

Arts Dune Tours has been in business for 75 years. It began with founder Arthur Costa offering a taxi service from P-town out to the dune shacks. Now protected by the National Park Service, Art’s Dune Tours is the only company to get a yearly permit to drive through the dunes.

I booked our tour over the phone. There are several times throughout the day to choose from (at time of booking our offerings were 10 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3 pm). The daily tours last one hour. Tours run rain or shine from mid May to November 15th.

There are also sunset tours that last two hours. Add-on experiences such as clambakes, kayaking and a tour of Race Point Light can be arranged.

Art's Dune Tours

Our dune tour left right from the center of Provincetown. The four-wheel-drive Suburbans have air-conditioning and comfortably fit up to 6 people. It is basically a private tour because you will only be with your group. Our driver had a negative covid test that day and there was plexi glass between the driver and the rest of the car.

Children of all ages are welcome on the tours. If you want your child in a car seat, you will have to bring your own as they are not provided. Otherwise, the kids can just use a seatbelt or sit on a parent’s lap.

Our tour was jam packed with history from the moment we got in the car. We saw what was left of the life-saving station whose mission it was to help survivors of shipwrecks in the late 1800’s. One time it took two attempts to get up and over the tallest dune which was close to 100 feet tall.

The landscape of the dunes is really unique. The enormous sand deposits were left behind when Ice Age glaciers receded. The peaks and valleys rise and fall like waves and the grass is beautifully windswept. Any refuge from the wind allows a tree to take root, yet it will grow sideways. It is hard to believe that anything could survive in that desolate of a habitat.

We stopped at the top of one of the dunes from a 10 minute break and were able to take photos.

One of the most interesting parts of the tour was learning about the dune shacks and the visitors who sought out the isolation of the dunes to let their creativity flow.

Table of Contents

History of the dune shacks

Provincetown has always been an artistic community and people seeking inspiration began heading out to the dunes.

In 1920, people began using the scraps of shipwrecks and parts of the old life-saving station to build shacks.

Tennessee Williams wrote a Street Car Named Desire from his shack and it is said that Marlon Brando walked through the dunes shouting “STELLA!” in an attempt to audition for the role.

The shacks have hosted great minds such as Henry David Thoreau, Jack Kerouac, Eugene O’Neill, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Norman Mailer, Mark Rothko, and E.E. Cummings, to name a few.

Dune Shack

Can you stay in a dune shack?

The easy answer is yes, but you will have to fight for it. There are week-long residence opportunities for artists, musicians and writers. A non-profit in Provincetown helps the NPS with the stays for the summer residency programs. The would-be residents must apply, and are chosen by jury selection or by lottery.

There are still 19 dune shacks remaining. These primitive shacks have never been wired with electricity or running water. You will have a bare wooden shack with an outhouse. It may come prepackaged with mice. There is no coming and going. You will be delivered to your shack and your ride will return a week later. With that said, those who have experienced the dune shacks claim it to be an existential experience.

What does Arts Dune Tour cost?

Number of People Per Truck- (There is a minimum price for 1-4 people)

1-4 people     $140.08

5  people        $175.10

6 people         $210.12

Are the dune tours harmful to the environment?

No, they are not. This was a worry of mine before the tour. We only drove on the fire access road that is there to reach the shacks. You won’t be off-roading willy nilly, ripping up the dunes or crushing piping plovers. The company has to apply for a permit each year, so access is very regulated. The vehicles they use are outfitted with special fat tires that don’t damage the fragile dune ecosystem.

Are the tours dog friendly?

No, dogs are not allowed in the vehicles.

Taking a dune tour with Arts Dune Tours is a really unique experience you won’t find anywhere else in the world. We learned a lot about the history of the area and had fun doing it. We would highly suggest checking it out. Growing up, we visited P-town almost every summer but never left the main street. Provincetown has so much more to offer than shopping. Our other favorite experience was visiting Long Point .

In closing, I will leave you with the lyrics of Rupert Holmes Piña Colada Song , so that it will be stuck in your head as it has been in mine.

We decided to take our lunch out to the dunes via Art's Dune Tours. Four of us with a knowledgeable and friendly driver/guide. We learned about history, weather, and climate changes that affected P-Town and its surrounding area. The ride through the dunes was nice and long, educational and fun. We got to meet new people, see seals up close and watched a GORGEOUS sunset.

Rob took us on a beautiful and fascinating tour of the dunes. So much history out here at the end of the Cape - the shacks and their famous inhabitants, the forest slowly growing back and so much life out there in the sand. Thanks for the guided tour!

I've lived in New England my entire life and am always amazed at the gems right under my nose. I visited Provincetown with a friend who suggested this tour she had taken before. Our guide was Sean and he was fantastic. The tour was fun, he was very informative and he showed us some beautiful locations. It was well worth the money and time. If you're in this area, don't miss this one.

I left a voicemail and was called back within a few hours. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Condition of the vehicle was good and we were supplied with chairs and little tables for our sunset dinner. Our tour guide was great! I would take another tour with Art's!

Our experience couldn't have been better. The check-in staff was friendly and warm; we toured with Melissa, who was upbeat and knowledgeable; the car was clean and comfortable. We almost cancelled our tour because we weren't sure it was worth it, and getting to see the dunes and dune shacks up close was absolutely worth it.

What a delightful thing to do. The tour we took consisted of an hour long tour of the Cape Cod sand dunes (massive!) and along the seashore and past The historic, storied "artist shacks". The topography is unlike anything I've ever seen. Definitely recommended!

I've been taking these tours over the years and I always appreciate them whether alone, with my sons, or with friends. A very helpful, courteous, warm, and helpful team shares the views of the dunes, their stories and history. Sometimes the tour guide was a little hard to hear from the back seats. The views are amazing, the sunset tours have always ended spectacularly. I should have asked if they had a copy of the book, the mayflower?, which was referenced by our tour guide. Every tour guide has offered us helpful hints, suggestions and knowledge nuggets I enjoy. Rob runs a great business with his team.

Seven Decades In The Dunes

Cape Cod Life  /  June 2016 / History , Recreation & Activities

Art’s Dune Tours celebrates 70 years in 2016!

Art's Dune Tours

Photography by Josh Shortsleeve

Driving slowly through the dunes of Provincetown, Rob Costa serves a variety of roles for Art’s Dune Tours. First, he’s a driver and skilled at easing the large Chevy Suburban loaded with seven passengers along the twisting, turning, and soft-sanded roads running through the dunes. Second, he’s the owner of the company, continuing a legacy his father Art began back in 1946 of introducing visitors from far and wide to this scenic area on the Outer Cape.

Finally, Costa is the guide on this particular excursion, and after leading thousands of tours, he casually rattles off details, anecdotes, and one-liners while passing by different spots on the route. “We have the biggest dunes anywhere on the Cape,” he says while passing a 100-footer. “We were formed by ocean and wind coming up the dune, caused by the glacial sand spirit.” Passing some of the area’s famous dune shacks, he points out that “Annie Dillard wrote her last book there,” and that writers Tennessee Williams, Jack Kerouac, and others had spent time at this shack or at that one. Pointing towards one oddly shaped structure, he asks his passengers what they think it might be. He offers some hints. “We call it the international house . . . When you go in there, you’re Russian. When you’re in there, you’re . . . European, and when you’re done, you’re Finnish.” Any questions?

This year, Art’s Dune Tours celebrates its 70th anniversary of bringing customers well off the beaten path to experience Provincetown’s beautiful dunes and beaches. “It’s truly an amazing area to see,” Costa says. “It can be spiritual, it can be inspiring, it can be historical, cultural, beautiful, so many things to so many people.” From mid-April to mid-November, the company offers several tours per day; some last an hour and include a drive through the dunes and along the Atlantic shore, while others are longer and come with dinner on the beach, a sandy sunset viewing, or a stop at Race Point Light.

Art’s Dune Tours hosted a group of Cape Cod LIFE staff members for a tour last September to experience some of the fun. Many photographs were taken throughout, and dinner consisted of a lobster bake and s’mores on the backshore near Race Point Beach.

Rob’s father, Art Costa, founded Art’s Dune Tours in 1946. Raised in Provincetown, Art served in the army during World War II, and was issued a Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf Cluster for his efforts while fighting in Italy. After his time in the service, Art returned to the Cape with some shrapnel in his leg, and a desire to see and enjoy the sand, and to bring others along for the ride. “He was a gentle soul,” Costa says of his dad. “Everybody loved him. He was friendly with everyone. He was very soft spoken and just loved doing what he did.”

In 1946, Art purchased a 1936 Ford Woodie and started the company. “I think it took some time to build it up,” Costa says of the business. In the decades that have passed since then, several other dune tour operators have come and gone, Costa says, but at present Art’s is the only one providing the service. “We’re the only ones left,” he says.

One of the highlights of the tour is the chance to view the 19 dune shacks that are located within the Peaked Hill Bars National Historic District. The district is named for the region, which was once home to one of the nine U.S. lifesaving stations overlooking the Cape’s Atlantic coast. Originally, the shacks served as homes for the lifesaving employees in the late 19th century. In the 1920s, Eugene O’Neill and other writers and artists took up residency in the shacks, or built new ones, and the location developed into a creative—though remote—place to be.

With the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961, the federal government took over ownership of much of the area along the coast in the Outer Cape, including the Provincetown dunes, yet those living in the shacks at the time were granted squatters’ rights to the properties until they died. Today, eight of the shacks are still owned by individual families, while the 11 others are owned by the government, but local non-profit organizations are granted lengthy artist-in-residency programs so individuals can stay in the shacks for extended periods, just like O’Neill and others did years ago.

Costa says the company’s busiest months are July and August, and in summer he typically has eight trucks running throughout the day. In spring and fall, Costa says the motor coach business, which has been growing in the area since the 1980s, brings a lot of customers, as does the various off-season festivals the town of Provincetown celebrates.

Art Costa, at right, brought many famous folks out to the dunes during his career, including Red Sox slugger Ted Williams, at left, and broadcaster Curt Gowdy.

About how many passengers have toured with Art’s over the years? “I don’t know exactly,” Costa says. “I would say hundreds of thousands.” That amount includes many celebrities and movie stars, such as Farrah Fawcett, Ryan O’Neal, Elizabeth Taylor, Rosie O’Donnell, and Secretary of State John Kerry. Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams also toured the dunes with well-known sports broadcaster Curt Gowdy, and during the early 1960s, Art pitched in with some rides during the filming of a scene for The Thomas Crown Affair , starring Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen. Costa says he thinks that Dunaway ripped her dress while out in the dunes, and then requested (or demanded) that Art drive back into town to pick up a seamstress, and to bring her back to the dunes to sew up the dress. “My mom made Steve McQueen a coffee cake,” Costa adds. “He loved it so much he asked for another one.”

Rob’s mother, Patricia Costa, was also born in Provincetown. Her maiden name is DeCosta, and she and her future husband were even born on the same street—just 19 years apart. Patricia also spent some time working for the company as a tour guide. Costa recalls one tour he led many years ago when his mother joined him for the outing. They both worked for the same company, but she had never been on one of her son’s tours, and he had never been on hers.

The arrangement made for a humor-filled afternoon. “You put two tour guides from the same family in one truck and they’re always trying to one-up each other,” Costa says, “but I must say she got me good, she actually won the competition.” Driving by the Ray Wells shack—named for the late artist and Mews Restaurant founder who once owned it—Patricia let out the mother of all one-liners. “She told everybody that I was conceived behind the shack,” Rob says. “And it’s a true story. Everybody was cracking up, and I was beat red.”

During the mid-1990s, Art began to develop Alzheimer’s disease, so Rob, who was living in Connecticut at the time and working in sales and part time as a tour guide, moved back to Provincetown to help run the business. Art passed away in 2006, and Priscilla followed in 2012.

“I was very much blessed having great parents,” Costa says. “My dad was a gentle soul, my mom was more like an angel. Together, they were well liked and respected. You can’t get much better than that.”

Today, Art’s is still very much a family business. Rob Costa owns the company and leads tours, while his partner, Rob Papa, manages the office. Rob’s aunt Priscilla Braddock and cousin Lisa Zawaduk are also involved with the company, which numbers about 25 employees.

Costa says he loves his job, and enjoys interacting with the passengers. “You’re meeting different people, you’re in an ever-changing landscape, the lighting is always different,” he says, “but people’s appreciations make it much more interesting than a repeating tour all the time. I absolutely love what I do, and I can’t see me doing anything else.”

For those who have never been on an Art’s dune tour, why should they sign up?

For starters, the drive from the company’s office at the center of Provincetown to the entrance to the dunes is just five minutes. Traveling through the towering dunes can be an inspiring experience, and one may understand why writers and artists, such as O’Neill, Jackson Pollack, e.e. Cummings, and others have been drawn here over the years. The name of one of the dune shacks—“Euphoria”—may offer further inspiration. Also, in summer one can view both the sunrise and the sunset from the beach—on the same day. Anything else? “They should come see what we’ve been enjoying for 70 years,” Costa says.

Art’s Dune Tours offers one-hour tours for $29 for adults, $18 for children; longer and more involved tours, and those featuring meals, are more expensive. Art’s Dune Tours is at 4 Standish Street, Provincetown. For more information, call 508-487-1950, or visit artsdunetours.com .

Historic Sites

Peaked hill bars historic district: dune shacks trail.

a shack part of the dune shacks of cape cod_ peaked hill bars historic district_things to do on cape cod

These historic dwellings are homes or past and present writers, poets, painters, playwrights, and others who came for the solitude and inspiration of this stark and unique environment. While many came for and found solitude, a thriving culture of dune dwellers and community of creativity emerged on the ephemeral edge of the continent, from Jackson Pollock, Tennessee Williams, Jack Kerouac, e.e. Cummings, and more.

Many of the Dune Shacks still house artists-in-residence and residencies for those seeking the serenity of the sand and sea, and willing to rough it in the primitive structures. The dune shacks trail in the shifting sand will lead you within view of many of these homes.

Prepare to Walk the Dune Shacks Trail

The dunes are best viewed on foot, following the dunes shack trail of loose sand up and over hills, past low bogs of cranberries, and on to the Atlantic. On hot days it’s not uncommon to see piles of shoes at the trailhead from hikers who have chosen to make the trek barefoot!

Dress appropriately for the weather and terrain, and wear comfortable, sturdy footwear for hiking. Bring essentials like water, snacks, a map or GPS device, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), insect repellent, and a backpack to carry your belongings.

For those who’d rather skip the hike, Art’s Dune Tours guides visitors through the dunes from the comfort of a car, as they have since 1946.

The Logistics of Getting to these Historic Dune Shacks

sandy dune at dune shacks of cape cod_peaked hill bars historic district_things to do on cape cod

Many do the walk barefoot, though it’s worth carrying shoes with you, as the sand can get hot in the middle of the day. Checking out the dune shack trail in the cooler temperatures of the morning and evening is a great way to avoid scorched toes and sunburns.

Respecting the Dunes and its Inhabitants

When walking on the dune shacks trail, stay on established paths to protect the fragile dune vegetation. It’s customary to give inhabited dune shacks a polite berth, respecting the artists who have chosen the dune shacks for creative solitude.

Be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles by respecting the natural environment. Pack out all trash and avoid disturbing wildlife and vegetation

The Dunes Shack Trail in Provincetown offers a serene and picturesque hiking experience in a unique coastal environment. It’s a perfect opportunity to explore the natural beauty and history of Cape Cod’s dunes.

A Tour Through the Provincelands Dunes

CAPE COD WAVE PHOTO

PROVINCETOWN – Recently the Cape Cod Wave crew decided to take a dune tour through the Provincelands with Art’s Dune Tours, just as the area hit the news because of a controversy over the dune shacks.

Art’s Dune Tours is a Provincetown institution having been around for more than 75 years and remaining in the same family. Art Costa, a Provincetown native, started the business when he returned from serving in World War II back in 1946 and now his son Rob runs the business.

The tour takes passengers in off-road vehicles into the Provincelands, a landscape of rolling dunes and scrub brush that is part of the 44,000 acre Cape Cod National Seashore, preserved as a national park by President John F. Kennedy back in 1961.

Around 1998, we took a dune tour led by Art himself. He passed away in 2006. This year, on a beautiful June morning, we took the one-hour tour. We were fortunate to have as our tour guide and driver Chris Cotugno, who has lived in Provincetown since 1980 and who gave an excellent overview of the history of this beautiful area.

In addition to the Cape Cod Wave crew and our driver/tour guide Chris, our SUV passengers included an artist from Canada looking for inspiration in the dune-scape and a couple from Wisconsin visiting Provincetown for the first time.

As our Arts Dune Tour vehicle entered the Provincelands, there were about a dozen demonstrators along Route 6 with placards and signs protesting the Cape Cod National Seashore’s recent decision to lease out some of the rustic dune shacks that dot the landscape.

The Town of Provincetown and Seashore officials have not always agreed on what is worth preserving in the Provincelands. The dune shacks were designated as a National Cultural Resource, called the Peaked Hill Bars Historic District, back in 2012, and many in Provincetown want to be sure these rustic lodgings that have housed and inspired renowned artists and writers, including Eugene O’Neal and Tennessee Williams, remain as part of the dune landscape.

Taking the tour gave us insight into what all the fuss is about–this is indeed a precious landscape. Our drive through the dunes with Chris as our guide was like entering a magical wilderness of surreal beauty. We oohed and ahhed at the panorama of sweeping hills of sand and scrub with the occasional view of a sweet dune shack tucked into the remote landscape.

The steep trail through the dunes provides a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. As you crest each dune, there are views out to the Atlantic Ocean or back towards Cape Cod Bay.

As you look back towards town, over the spires and rooftops of Provincetown, the sight of the towering 252-foot tall Pilgrim Monument provides a reassuring reminder that civilization still exists beyond these ethereal dunes.
