Cruise travel insurance

Whether you’re looking for an island getaway or an Arctic adventure, there’s nothing better than exploring exciting destinations whilst aboard the comfort and luxury of a cruise ship.

But like any type of travel, it may not always be smooth sailing. From sea sickness to missed departures, cruise holidays can come with their own unique risks. Our award-winning  travel insurance allows you to embark on your adventure with peace of mind, knowing we’ll be here to help if the unexpected happens.

Travel insurance cover for cruise holidays

Our TravelCare policy will automatically cover you if:

  • you’re travelling as a fare-paying passenger aboard a cruise ship
  • the cruise ship is run by a company that’s licensed to operate a passenger-carrying service, or is a tour operator
  • on your journey, the cruise is travelling to an overseas destination (including international waters).

This policy doesn’t offer cover if you’re travelling on a cruise that stays only in New Zealand waters.

However, you'll still be covered if your cruise travels within New Zealand waters when you leave or return from your trip.

Travel on overseas charter vessels

Our TravelCare policy includes cover for travel while you’re a passenger on a charter vessel overseas if both:

  • the charter vessel is crewed
  • you only travel within inland or coastal waters (we define ‘coastal waters’ as waters that are within 12 nautical miles – or 22.2km – from the coast of your overseas destination).

What destinations am I covered for?

Cruises often include a number of destinations on their itinerary, so it’s important that you select all of these destinations when you’re getting a quote. The destinations on your cruise ship include:

  • where you get on
  • each place you visit
  • where you get off.

Remember, if you’re visiting any other destinations outside of your cruise trip, you’ll also need to add these when getting a quote.

When you’re applying for a policy online, New Zealand will not appear as an option to add to the list of countries, but don’t worry! You’ll automatically be covered if you’re leaving or returning to a New Zealand port.

Medical care in New Zealand

If you fall ill while the cruise ship is in New Zealand waters, you’ll need to get treatment through the public health system, or other third parties like your health insurer. You can then make a claim under your TravelCare policy for any costs that aren’t covered by these providers.

If you fall ill when you’re in New Zealand but on dry land (for example, if you’re on a day trip), you can only make a claim through the public health system or a third party insurer.

Simple treatments, consultations and medications on board a ship are charged at private rates. These can amount to $250 for just a quick 10-minute appointment. If you purchase our cruise pack add-on you'll be covered for any on-board doctor visits, prescribed drugs, hospital stays and more.

How do I tell Zoom about my medical history?

We have a quick and easy online medical screening which you need to complete if you have any pre-existing illnesses. Follow the medical questions within the quote process to complete the assessment for all travellers with pre-existing conditions. It'll only take a minute.

Annual multi-trip policies are only available to those under 69 years. If you want to add-on our ski or adventure pack, that's only available to those under 69 too.

Are my golf clubs covered?

Yes. You are covered up to a combined total of $750 for your golf clubs, golf bag and golf trolley. If you are wanting a higher level of cover for individual golf items or higher combined limit you will need to buy the Golf Pack add on. The Golf Pack add on provides cover for your own Golf equipment (golf clubs, golf bag, golf trolley and golf shoes), Golf Equipment Hire (golf clubs, golf bag, golf trolley and golf shoes), Golf Green Fees and Hole in One cover.

Can I travel with my dependant grandchildren?

Yes, dependants will be included under your policy for free. They are defined as your own children or grandchildren and under the age of 19.

I have high value items; how much can I insure them for?

If you’re travelling with gadgets or more expensive items you can purchase additional cover for up to $5,000. Please note, you can only buy additional high value item cover under our comprehensive plan.

What excess applies to senior travellers?

Do I Need Special Insurance For Cruise Ship Travel?

cruise ship travel insurance nz

As Kiwis and many around the world wait and hope for life to return to normal after Covid-19, cruise companies are reporting a surge in bookings for future trips. One company reportedly sold out a future booking in 24 hours.

Due to a lack of other travel options, or a fear of certain destinations, it seems many people are investigating taking a cruise for the first time. When researching and planning a holiday on a cruise ship it is important to be sure you have adequate insurance cover.

Cruise trip travel insurance can include specific policy features or in some cases the policy is simply general travel cover that does not exclude cruises.

Cruise insurance policies should include:

  • a daily compensation if you’re confined to your cabin (it could be due to illness, missing a port departure, or if your itinerary is changed)
  • medical treatment, which could cover issues such as stomach bugs that can be spread amongst passengers, to more serious medical episodes or accidents onboard or ashore
  • luggage cover which is always assumed but should be clarified for the duration of the trip

Another important factor is to be sure the insurance company will cover you in real-time and with cruise-specific solutions, so that you can get immediate help if you are in the middle of a cruise.

Most of the big cruise ship companies like Princess and Carnival offer cruise cover but it pays to shop around for personal service and value. We can help with all your insurance needs, and have added experience with travel insurance for people 65 and over . If you're thinking of a post-covid cruise then get in touch with our friendly experts.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Cruise Travel Insurance Guide

Compare cruise insurance and save heaps.

Oh Buoy! Discovering the world whilst on a cruise can be a truly spectacular holiday experience. Adventure, new discoveries, beautiful destinations and partying at the Captain's table can all be part of life on a cruise.

But, like any holiday, there are risks. With so much time spent on the water, and so much of your journey dependent on various port authorities, the only way to truly relax is to know you’re covered should something go wrong.

Pier pressure when you leave the port

What many people don't realise is that even if you're cruising local coastal waters, once your ship has left port, you are no longer covered for hospital or medical expenses by New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) or Australian Medicare.

Don’t get all titanic with medical expenses

Hospital bills can be as much as $5,000 per day. Treatments, consultations and medications on board a ship are charged at private rates. Don't base your insurance decision on the assumption of 'it won't happen to me'. The unexpected does happen.

Aboat time!

If your travel plans include cruising for more than 4 consecutive days, depending upon your insurer, you may have to select cruise cover as an additional option to your standard international policy. Some insurers automatically cover you provided you have selected an international policy. Alternatively you can purchase from a provider specialising in cruise insurance.

Adventure for the adrenaline addict

If you plan on participating in adventure shore activities or sports such as scuba diving or parasailing, be sure to check your chosen policy covers these activities.

With cruise travel insurance you boat dwell if the worst should happen

A good policy will cover you for emergency medical evacuation from ship to shore, along with cover for general medical expenses such as hospital stays, doctor and surgical fees and dental. You will probably want to look at the level of cover for your valuables too, as many holiday makers will have a good camera on board to capture the stunning scenery on offer. Be sure to check that you are covered for any existing medical conditions too.

Good cruise insurance will cover:

  • Medical expenses : Cruise liners have doctors on board, but these are private. If you get a bout of sea sickness (or worse) expect to get a very expensive bill afterwards for any treatment you might need.
  • Medical evacuation:  If your condition is too serious to be treated on board, you may need to be evacuated to the nearest – which could cost thousands!
  • Delays : Bad weather, strikes, or even civil unrest could lead to a delay in your plans.
  • Cancellations : Things happen. Life happens. If your flight is cancelled due to bad weather and you miss your cruise, or you have a close family emergency and can no longer go, the right insurance can give you peace of mind.
  • Luggage and personal items:  Most people pack a schmick camera to take pics of all those amazing views. You can rest assured that your valuables are covered with the right policy.

What’s not covered with cruise insurance?

Like all travel insurance policies, some things just aren’t covered. Most polices wont cover you for the following:

  • Being a tad tipsy:  We know the unlimited supply of alcohol and treats is hard to say no to, however if you’re under the influence of alcohol and drop your clutch bag overboard, or slip on the deck you might find your insurer is less sympathetic than usual.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions:  normally  conditions that exist before your holiday  aren’t covered, but to be sure check your policy wording for a full list.
  • Cancellations:  If the cruise company  cancels  your pre-booked trip then it’s there responsibility to book you on another one, or offer a refund. Travel insurance doesn’t offer compensation when you’re already due reimbursement from the cruise carrier.
  • Cruise company collapse:  Many insurers have general exclusions to do with travel company  insolvency, so if you think your cruise company is a bit crafty, consider an insurance policy that covers insolvency.

Travel insurance FAQs

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover a number of costs and disruptions associated with travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per policy, however, travel insurance typically protects against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. The destination, length of trip, specific activity add-ons and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy. Policies can be purchased at the time of booking a trip up until the time a traveller leaves their home.

Travel insurance varies for individual travellers based on the options selected by them, so prices vary from person-to-person. The cost of a travel insurance policy is determined by:

  • Age of traveller/s: the older the traveller, the higher the policy cost may be.
  • Number of travellers included in the policy: a higher number of travellers creates more variables, therefore increasing risk.
  • Length of trip/s: a single trip policy is generally around half the amount of a multi-trip policy, making the latter more cost-effective for frequent travellers, while shorter trips often pose less risk of medical incidents and travel interruptions, resulting in lower costs.
  • Destination/s: costs vary greatly depending on the countries and regions covered by a policy. For example, regions such as Europe will often be cheaper than trips to the USA because of the high cost of medical treatment in America.
  • Level of coverage: travellers can opt for cheaper travel insurance as well as comprehensive, more expensive plans to cater to their different needs.
  • Existing medical conditions: a customer’s policy will increase if their medical history shows an increased risk of possible medical treatment requirements while travelling.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Policy Wording to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may negatively impact your travel plans.

By purchasing travel insurance prior to departure, your policy can help cover the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of medical treatment, lost passports and personal items while you’re travelling. The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval.

To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as a police report or medical bill to confirm the incident occurred.

Always read the Policy Wording before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the Policy Wording before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated when claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including:

  • Cancellation: simply changing your mind prior to your trip may not be sufficient for a successful claim.
  • Pre-existing conditions: if medical conditions aren’t disclosed or covered by the policy at time of purchase, exclusions may apply to coverage related to those conditions.
  • Theft or loss of belongings while left unattended: travellers must take care of their belongings as they would as home.
  • Incidents occurring as a result of reckless behaviour: claims arising from excessive drinking or taking recreational drugs will likely be rejected.
  • Winter and adventure sports: claims resulting from participation in high-risk sports will be void unless covered by the policy.
  • Terrorism and extreme weather events: travelling to specific regions against the advice of the government or your insurer may result in unsuccessful claims because the events are no longer unforeseeable circumstances.

For full details of exclusions within a travel insurance plan, consult the Policy Wording.

Purchasing a policy soon after a trip is booked has a number of benefits and increases a traveller’s protection.

When purchased ahead of time, a traveller can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before the customer leaves their home to depart for their trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made.

By considering travel insurance as an essential part of booking a holiday - not an afterthought when at the airport - travellers are likely to be covered should an incident arise before take-off.

See all travel insurance FAQs .

*Medical cover will not exceed 12 months from onset. Medical and dental expenses cover is limited to $1,500 for treatment provided in New Zealand. This $1,500 sub-limit does not apply to the Inbound medical section. Emergency dental expenses are limited to $1,500. ~Cooling-off period is available if you wish to cancel your policy within 21 calendar days of the date of purchase and you have not made a claim under the policy or departed on your journey.

Travel Insurance

There’s nothing like a cruise to feed the soul and broaden the mind. And nothing like the unexpected to put a dampener on your plans.

With nearly thirty years of experience and more than 2.2 million journeys every year, Cover-More knows what travellers need. That’s why P&O Cruises recommends Cover-More Travel Insurance.

Ensure you are covered for general medical expenses overseas, existing medical conditions, hospitalisation and medical evacuations.

If you plan on participating in sports such as scuba diving or parasailing, ensure your policy covers these activities.

International travel insurance is recommended on Australian coastal cruises, as your cruise is outside the scope of the New Zealand Health system.

If your cruise includes a call to New Caledonia, please note the New Caledonia government requires that all guests hold comprehensive international travel insurance. Guests will be required to bring printed proof of travel insurance and this will be checked at embarkation. Guests may also be requested to present it during the cruise. Any guest who is unable to provide proof of travel insurance will be denied boarding.

Be aware when organising your insurance that uninsured travellers (or their families) are held personally liable for cancellation, medical and associated costs incurred at any time whether before the cruise, on board or overseas. Hospitalisation costs on board or outside of the country and medical evacuation costs are very expensive and are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance. Daily hospital bills can cost as much as AUD 5,000 per day. All consultations, treatments and medications are charged at private rates.

If something goes wrong, you want expert help fast so you can keep travelling.

Officials begin investigation after cruise ship arrives at harbor with endangered whale corpse across bow: 'We are deeply saddened'

The arrival of a cruise ship in New York led to an investigation after authorities spotted an endangered whale across its bow.

What happened?

The Associated Press reported that the Meraviglia, a ship owned by Swiss-Italian line MSC Cruises, pulled into the Port of Brooklyn on May 5 with a dead 44-foot sei whale across its bow, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez.

"We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale," cruise line officials said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life."

Gomez told the AP that officials transferred the whale to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and performed an autopsy on May 7. The results have not yet been revealed.

Why is this concerning?

According to NOAA Fisheries , vessel strikes and net entanglement are now the biggest threats to sei whales after the International Whaling Commission issued an edict to halt commercial whaling practices in the 1980s.

Rising global temperatures may be playing an interconnected part. The organization notes that sea traffic is expected to increase as new routes open because of melting sea ice. Additional noise pollution can also impact the ability of certain marine species to navigate their habitats.

Watch now: What would Alex Honnold do as dictator for a day?

As for the nets, "hundreds of millions of marine animals" are killed or hurt every year by these nonbiodegradable entities, as detailed by Plastic Soup Foundation.

Many modern fishing nets contain plastic, a material overwhelmingly made from dirty fuels, like motor oil and gasoline . These nets then leach toxins into our environment.

One investigation found that a group of stranded marine mammals had high levels of PCBs, a now-banned harmful chemical that used to be used in many plastics .

Should cities be allowed to ban cruise ships from visiting their ports?

Click your choice to see results and speak your mind.

That's not to mention the 12.1 million tons of plastics that enter our oceans, per the Ocean Conservancy. Other animals have starved from the inside out after ingesting the material .

While it's unclear if the whale was alive before ending up on the ship's bow, its death is an unfortunate reminder of how our activities can negatively impact other creatures — and ultimately contribute to a less healthy planet for everyone who calls Earth home.

What can be done about this?

The AP notes that sei whales are an internationally protected species, and officials with MSC Cruises indicated that they adhere to all regulations intended to protect whales, including altering routes as needed to avoid collisions.

If a collision was indeed a factor in the whale's death, authorities will likely study the data and formulate a plan to limit the possibility of this happening again.

As far as plastic nets are concerned, some governments have already banned bottom trawling, a practice that can result in broken and abandoned gear.

You can help keep our planet and oceans healthy by participating in local cleanup efforts and swapping single-use plastic products, like grocery bags and razors , for reusable items made from less toxic and more durable materials.

X should bring back stars, not hide 'likes'

Elon Musk's X is preparing to make "likes" private on the social network, in a change that could potentially confuse users over the difference between something they've favorited and something they've bookmarked. According to new posts by company employees, the decision to hide likes is meant to incentivize engagement, by allowing people to favorite content that seems "edgy" and to protect their public image. The change comes across as somewhat unnecessary, given that X, the company formerly known as Twitter, already had a private way to save posts on the platform: bookmarks.

Norwegian cruise investor day: more ships, more premium – and cost cuts.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings unveiled adjustments to the company’s strategy as part of its investor day for analysts.

The company, whose brands span Norwegian Cruise Line , Oceania Cruises , and Regent Seven Seas Cruises , had a culture established by its founder, Frank Del Rio, who retired last year. Executives said the company now needs a culture more focused on efficiency. “We believe our team can collectively deliver better, and we will,” said CEO Harry Sommer .

Here are key takeaways:

“A Ship Within a Ship”

Adding capacity : Norwegian ordered eight new cruise ships, which will add almost 25,000 more berths after they all come online by 2036.

Balcony Bump: The core customer base includes travelers in the middle- and upper-income tiers. Thus, many of its new ship designs are tilting premium. They’ll include a higher mix of balcony cabins, which bring in twice the revenue of interior cabins and are more profitable.

Changing the cabin mix : When families have multi-generational trips, not everyone can afford the same level of service. In response, Norwegian aims for what’s metaphorically a ship-within-a-ship concept.

Something for everyone : “Maybe the rich grandparents want to be in pure luxury, where they have all the amenities, concierge, butler, private dining, but still have the amenities of a big ship, with lots of entertainment, other dining venues, lots of activities to do at night,” said David Herrera, president of Norwegian, in a CNBC interview .

Streamlining operations

Cutting costs : Norwegian wants to cut $300 million in recurring costs over the next three years. It has created a team looking for surgical cuts. Two-thirds of the planned savings will likely come from ship operating costs, followed by marketing and other functions. “It 100% starts with changing the culture,” said Mark Kempa, chief financial officer.

Port power play : One way to save money is to use port facilities more efficiently. Today 65% of the group’s itineraries involve the same top-10 ports for departure. By 2026, the goal is to have 80% of routes depart from those ports. Florida ports are broadly cheaper than sailing out of Europe and Alaska, and the company plans more itineraries from the Sunshine State to the Caribbean.

AI to attract guests : Norwegian said it’s investing in AI to streamline operations, from revenue management to customer service. Execs said the company did a better job of monitoring data quality and increased its marketable database by 77% between 2019 and last year. They added that tests of quasi-personalized campaigns were promising.

AI to make more efficient route maps . The company uses AI-driven predictive models to optimize itinerary planning by integrating revenue and cost data. These models can also help trim the company’s carbon footprint.

AI to enhance pricing . Norwegian taps revenue management systems to predict guest purchasing behavior and discover how to maximize revenue from cabin upgrades and other onboard sales.

New financial targets

Margin call : Norwegian aims to increase its adjusted EBITDA margin by 800 basis points to 39% by 2026, a record percentage of revenue.

Stemming the tide of debt : The company intends to slash its leverage to the mid-4-times-earnings range by 2026. Its net leverage ratio, calculated as net debt divided by adjusted EBITDA, stood at 7.3-times-earnings at the end of 2023. Last year, Norwegian returned to a profit for the first time since 2019 .

Royal Caribbean Cruise ship medical emergency left Michigan man with unexpected bill

While being evacuated for a series of seizures, he was handed a hefty bill by royal caribbean cruises..

Michigan couple recall Royal Caribbean experience

Vincent Wasney recalled his horrific experience of having a medical emergency on a Royal Caribbean cruise to KFF Health News.

Wasney, 31, and his fiancé Sarah Eberlein were gifted the tickets by their real estate agent after purchasing their first home in Saginaw, Michigan .

After two years of delays due to the pandemic, they set sail to the Bahamas in December 2022, marking the first time either had ever ridden in a plane or saw the ocean.

While the two were particularly excited to visit CocoCay, a private island with a water park, balloon rides, and pig swimming excursions, the last day of the trip proved to be a nightmare.

World's Large Cruise Ship Icon Of The Seas Returns Back To Port In Miami

He reported felling ill the day before he had a seizure in bed, where blood came gushing out of his mouth from biting his tongue.

She was able to find a guest on board who was emergency room physician for assistance.

Shortly after, he was put into a wheelchair by the ship's medical crew to take him down to the medical facility, where he was given anticonvulsants and fluids and monitored before being released.

He started having seizures about a decade ago and was diagnosed with epilipsey, however, he hadn't experienced one in awhile.

He said he took medicine initially, but, after two years without another seizure, his doctors took him off the medicine to avoid liver damage.

World's Large Cruise Ship Icon Of The Seas Returns Back To Port In Miami

Later, after returning to his cabin, he had a second seizure, where he stopped breathing.

His fiancé recalled his lips being "so purple they almost looked black." Again, she ran for help so hastily that she locked herself out of their room.

By the time the ship's medical team got to their cabin, Wasney was breathing again but had broken blood vessels along his chest and neck, which looked like "tiger stripes."

Wasney was in the ship's medical center when he had a third seizure — a grand mal, which typically causes a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions.

By then, the ship was close enough to port that Wasney could be evacuated by rescue boat. He was put on a stretcher to be lowered by ropes off the side of the ship, with Eberlein climbing down a rope ladder to join him.

However, before they disembarked while waiting on the rescue boat, they were handed a bill.

The bill obtained by KFF Health News reflects that he was charged $2,500.22 for "general and enhanced observation, a blood test, anticonvulsant medicine, and a fee for services performed outside the medical facility" by the Independence of the Seas Medical Center.

As part of Royal Caribbean's guest terms, cruise passengers "agree to pay in full" all expenses incurred on board by the end of the cruise, including those related to medical care. In addition, Royal Caribbean does not accept "land-based" health insurance plans.

Wasney, who was uninsured at the time, said he was surprised to learn that he was required to pay his medical bills before exiting the ship — despite being urgently evacuated.

"Are we being held hostage at this point?" Eberlein remembered asking. "Because, obviously, if he's had three seizures in 10 hours, it's an issue."

He reported feeling groggy and struggled to recall details, which is a typical after seizures, however, he says he remembers seeing the bill.

He recalled telling a cruise employee he could not afford it, to which they reportedly responded: "How much can you pay?"

He says he drained their bank accounts, including money saved for their next house payment, as well as maxed out his credit card, but were still about $1,000 short.

Ultimately, they were allowed to leave the ship, and he later learned his card was overdrafted to cover it.

Royal Caribbean International did not respond to multiple inquiries from KFF Health News.

Once on land, in Florida , Wasney was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he incurred thousands of dollars more in medical expenses.

Upon returning, the couple said they returned home with essentially no money in their bank account, several thousand dollars of medical debt, and no idea how they would cover their mortgage payment.

The couple ultimately set up an instalment payment plan to cover all the bills.

The couple was able to make their house payment with $2,690 they raised through a GoFundMe campaign he set up.

The cruise line’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage will sail round-trip from San Diego, California in 2026, taking guests down under and back over 93 days.

"Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world's most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States," Beth Bodensteiner, the line’s chief commercial officer, said in a news release . "Our team crafted this itinerary to show guests the parts of Australia and New Zealand they expect to visit, but also included frequently asked for, but rarely visited, ports throughout Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands."

When is Holland America’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage?

The cruise will depart on Jan. 4, 2026 aboard the line’s 1,432-guest Zaandam ship.

Where will the cruise sail?

The ship will visit 44 ports in 10 countries. Passengers will make their way to Hawaii first before heading to the South Pacific. The ship will then visit Australia – almost circling the country – and New Zealand, followed by Tonga and French Polynesia on the way back to San Diego.

The itinerary features two days of scenic cruising at the Great Barrier Reef and four late-night departures in Adelaide, Australia and the French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine. Guests will also stay overnight in six ports, including Honolulu, Sydney and Auckland, giving them ample time to explore.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you?

How much does the cruise cost?

The cruise currently starts at $17,699 per person based on double occupancy, according to Holland America’s website . Travelers who book by June 16, 2025 can get perks like a Surf Wi-Fi package, airport transfers in San Diego, a 3% pay-in-full discount and more thrown in (though they vary by stateroom category).

If your ideal vacation involves spending months sailing around the world – exploring storied, faraway lands and learning the mysteries of ancient civilizations and cultures – then you should consider booking a world cruise. These epic voyages transport guests around the globe to some of the world's top historical and cultural attractions . You'll sample locally inspired cuisines from Asia, Europe, South America and other diverse regions, plus enjoy special events on the ship and in port, including expert guest lectures, cultural programs and memorable themed nights. And best of all: You'll only have to pack and unpack once.

To help you choose which world cruise is right for you, U.S. News has compiled a list of some of the best sailings that are available to book for 2025. Keep in mind: If you're interested in a world cruise that is fully booked, you shouldn't lose hope. When trips are booked this far in advance, there are usually some cancellations; you may be able to get on a waitlist through a travel adviser or by contacting the cruise line directly. Otherwise, if you're ready to book your tickets and set sail on the trip of a lifetime, consider one of these 11 upcoming world voyages. Frequently Asked Questions

Full itineraries for world cruises typically last anywhere from around 100 to 180 days, though Royal Caribbean International 's Serenade of the Seas is currently sailing the longest world cruise at 274 days. If you're not able to set sail for three to five months (or longer), some cruise lines also offer select, shorter segments of their full world cruise itineraries or grand voyages, which are typically two to three months in length.

World cruise fares can vary significantly between cruise lines. Some lines advertise cruise-only fares, which do not include meals at specialty restaurants, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excursions, some entertainment, or other expenses. On top of that, many cruise lines' base prices exclude port fees and taxes. Given the length of a world cruise, even small expenses can add up after several months on the ship and in ports around the globe. Typically, travelers can expect to spend a base fare of about $15,000 for an inside cabin and as much as $90,000 (or more) for luxury accommodations and an all-inclusive fare.

If you're considering sailing beyond 2025, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced its 140-night 2027 world cruise, World of Splendor, sailing from Miami to New York. The voyage embarks on Jan. 11, 2027, aboard Seven Seas Splendor , and prices start at $91,499 per person. If you want to reserve the over-the-top Regent Suite, you'll need to budget an unheard-of $1.7 million for two guests ($839,999 per person, to be exact).

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fares include almost everything you could need, including door-to-door luggage service, first and business class airfare, pre-cruise gala events, exclusive shoreside experiences, unlimited dry cleaning and laundry, prepaid gratuities, meals, open bars and lounges, unlimited Wi-Fi access, and more. Silversea also offers door-to-door pricing that includes private executive transfers, international business class flights, pre- and post-cruise hotels and transfers, baggage valet, all meals and beverages, butler service, bespoke special events, and other amenities.

Depending on the cruise line, you may receive many additional perks when booking a full world cruise, including shore excursions. All-inclusive luxury lines like Silversea and Regent Seven Seas offer a list of complimentary shore excursions in every port. In addition, Silversea hosts a bon voyage reception, a private dinner and an overnight hotel stay for world cruise guests. It also features exclusive world cruise cultural events in ports around the globe. If you're sailing with Regent Seven Seas, you'll also have pre-cruise gala events and exclusive shoreside experiences throughout the cruise.

Special inclusions, upgrades and other amenities are available with other lines that are not all-inclusive. For example, guests on boutique cruise line Azamara's 2025 world cruise will receive $25,000 in benefits, including $3,000 for shore excursions, 13 exclusive events and much more. Oceania's " simply MORE" offer includes $8,200 in shore excursion credit, as well as many other amenities.

If you're sailing with a larger cruise line, it's also possible to find deals that may include shore excursions or onboard credit you can use for booking tours. Holland America Line offers guests an early booking bonus that includes a list of additional perks, including one complimentary shore excursion, $2,000 per person in onboard credit ($4,000 for solo travelers) and more. MSC Cruises includes 15 free shore excursions and other perks when you book its world cruise.

You may want to consult with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see what additional perks they can offer if you book your world cruise through their agency.

Royal Caribbean International's 274-night Ultimate World Cruise, which set sail in December 2023, will visit all seven continents before guests disembark in September 2024.

Holland America Line's 132-day Grand World Voyage cruise aboard Volendam in 2026 will also visit seven continents, circumnavigating the globe. The epic journey will include a four-day Antarctic experience.
