Wonderful experience for my son

My son went on an EF Tours trip with his school and he had a blast! He's usually pretty reserved and quiet, but ended up making new friends and really enjoyed himself. He's going to college this Fall and will be majoring in History, so this trip was very exciting for him. They visited so many historical sites and tried so many new things. We would 100% recommend this trip!!

High school art trip

Our daughter and her classmates had a fantastic experience in Italy! The trip was fun, flawless, and educational! We travel often and this was a perfectly executed art trip with an extra large group of high school students. Wonderful opportunity for those who wouldn’t otherwise travel. She is looking forward to next years trip!

Japan was an amazing experience!

Japan was an amazing experience for both myself and my daughter. EF tours packed a lot into our itinerary and we felt like we had a great sampling of what Japan has to offer and we both want to return one day to experience some of the sites we saw more in depth and to see new ones that time did not allow on this trip. Spring is a great time to visit and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom while we were there! Our tour director in Japan was full of great information, patient and kind. She worked hard to make sure we all had a wonderful trip and went above and beyond what was expected.

The Dominican Republic Tour The tour and tour guide and bus driver…

The tour and tour guide and bus driver were all great. The downside was the long flight layovers going and coming home. I think a small increase in the monthly payment to ensure better flights would be unnoticeable over the course of two years and make for a more pleasurable and less tiring experience.

Middle School Italy trip

My son had the beat time of his life on the Italy trip. Daily pictures updates with our kids were a plus. I felt safety of the children was a priority. Miss Martin and all the chaperones were amazing! Overall a great experience that I recommend ! We will definitely join EF tour in other trips if we have the opportunity.

School trip went wrong

We got to 2 bus accidents in one day in Paris. The tour guy was disrespectful. For dinner one day, we were fed pork; not everyone ate pork; therefore, I had to spend money to buy dinner. I asked for a vegetarian meal, but I was denied because I did fill out the form for vegetarian. So many things happened, which makes the trip unenjoyable. I felt like I waisted money for myself and my daughter

Reply from EF Educational Tours

We're sorry to hear about your negative experience on the tour. We do ask for dietary preferences before the tour, and we're happy to accommodate when we receive requests. Unfortunately, if we aren't aware of specific dietary needs, we're unable to communicate them to our restaurant partners. However, we'll follow up with our team regarding your concerns and will address this with our restaurant partners for future groups. Thank you for sharing your review with us. Your feedback is important, and we'll use it to improve our services. We hope to provide you with an excellent experience moving forward.

Life-changing experiences for student travelers

Have sent children abroad with EF on two different trips and each was extraordinary. EF puts traveler safety at the top of the priority list, and the local guides who are with them are incredible. Would highly recommend EF and their offerings. Life-changing experiences for student travelers.

Italy high school trip

My daughter, Jordan, a sophomore at Burr and Burton High School in Vermont, went to Italy with about 30 of her classmates. Her experience with EF Tours was exceptional. Communicating with the parents helped us prepare her for the trip and feel comfortable with her abroad. I highly recommend them.

When I canceled my automatic transfer…

When I canceled my automatic transfer of funds you still tried to pull then charged me late fees. When trying to rectify the situation through you and the teacher that was working on organizing the tour you ignored the situation. My daughter didn’t like Juan saying he was bossy and pushy. I understand a tour guide has to move people along but this wasn’t her complaint ask my daughter for her reasons. I will say however it seemed well organized as far as what to take and when to have things ready. Times were reasonably accurate and things did seem to flow according to their plan.

Our daughter came home from this trip…

Our daughter came home from this trip and could not stop talking about her experience in Costa Rica. She spoke very highly of their tour guide and shared that he made a difference in the trip.

This tour was incredible

This tour was incredible. We did so many things in Paris and our two tour directors, Eric and Hugues made everything run smoothly and provided us with unforgettable adventures.

EF was excellent!

EF was great every step of the way, from direct customer service support before the trip to the exceptional staff on my daughter's tour. I loved the app, too, to be able to see what she was up to each day of the trip. Great work!

Date of experience : March 25, 2024

Beautiful learning experience!

Bike ride and Monserrat tour was canceled. The food given at the restaurant can be much better and the tour specialist took too long to respond to our questions… days but the rest was excellent!!!

A wonderful first trip abroad with EF

Our language Immersion school used EF to do our first trip abroad. As we prepared for the trip, the company provided training for me as a chaperone. They also provided the material to prepare the students before our trip. Our small group of middle schoolers went to the the French Riviera Tour. This tour made it's way to Paris. We saw so much of France and the different regions and landscapes. It was beautiful. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and professional. The students had a great time and a very good experience. I think they matured in so many ways and I know this was a life changing experience. I would definitely recommend this experience.

Date of experience : April 23, 2024

The tour was educational and fun

The tour was educational and fun. The tour guide was the best we've had in a long time. The aspects about the trip we didn't like was the hotel in Florence - dirty and it was filled with truck stop drivers. The food choices and quality for dinner was mediocre. The day we went to Rome to see the colosseum there was a large crowd to get through security, which took long time. This then rushed th Roman Forum and lunch so we could get to the Vatican on time. Maybe separate out these two area tours to different days during the busier months.

My daughter loved the tour guide Sally

My daughter loved the tour guide Sally. She loved that everything was organized and on scheduled from the locations they visited to the transportation, hotels and the restaurant they ate at.

I only gave them a one star rating…

I only gave them a one star rating because zero stars is not an option. I’m not bothering to write about our experience because I don’t want to read their standard “ we’re sorry about your….., or we take our travelers safety….. but their insecure “sorry’s” means nothing and they don’t care as long as their goal of keeping your money is achieved. They never give even the smallest amount back for their mess up on tours and are quick to put their name on tours that go well and quicker to blame the tour leaders for things that go bad. Do yourself a favor and keep your money or just throw it in a wishing well if you have money to waste.

Date of experience : March 29, 2024

London, wales, and Dublin tour

Our tour guide Patty was friendly, informative and very well organized. She communicated very effectively both verbally and via the app. We got to see so much in the places we visited with plenty of time for both guided tours and free time to explore. The variety of experiences was exceptional. Tours both walking a bus, shopping experiences, chance to ride public transportation, cultural activities like dancing and singing and music, museums, castles and even a farm. All the tour guides were amazing! This was an incredible experience for both my daughter and I.

Date of experience : April 27, 2024

The tour guide for our students was…

The tour guide for our students was fantastic. The hotel accommodations where decent. The only big change I would suggest is letting the families know of the change in return travel documents that EF requires with the hard deadlines in order for families to pick up there students and travel after the school trip is complete. I would also let school or students know ahead of time that the student is responsible for purchasing lunch daily. We did not know that we had to purchase lunch ever day making the cash brought on the trip a bit different for our student.

Costa Rica with Gustavo!

I joined my daughter, her teacher, and other students on the Costa Rica trip. We LOVED it! It's a beautiful country and the locals were just lovely and very welcoming. The experiences we had were amazing and we learned SO much from our guide Gustavo. He was there every step of the way. We were very active on this trip - lots of challenging hiking, zip lining (it was awesome), and snorkeling/swimming. We saw and learned about so many birds and animals, and we hiked a volcano. It was surreal. The hotels and bus were comfortable. Our favorite hotel was the Buena Vista Lodge-the sunsets were breathtaking! Our only disappointment is that it was advertised as a week-long trip. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and our flights home were early morning the following Friday, so we felt like we were robbed of an entire day. We should have traveled home the following Saturday. We also had a very long layover (6 hours) between flights which was daunting, but we made the best of it as we had all bonded during this wonderful trip. I would absolutely recommend EF Tours, Gustavo, and Costa Rica. It's the most gorgeous place. Pura Vida!

Camino Ways Review: What I Liked and What I Didn’t

camino ways review

Camino Ways is the top provider for Camino de Santiago Tours. I used their services when I did the last 100 km of the Camino, their most popular tour. Read on for my review of Camino Ways. What I liked and what I didn’t.

Table of Contents

CaminoWays.com is owned by Greenlife Tours Ltd. They also own IrelandWays.com and CanariaWays.com which I’ve used for walking the  Wicklow Way  and  hiking in La Gomera  respectively. While the focus of this article is on CaminoWays.com the same information applies to the other two companies as well.

From fresco tours to gothic cathedrals, UNESCO World Heritage sites to beautiful coastlines, Camino Ways has it all for you! So let’s take a look, shall we?

Entering Santiago, the finish point of the Camino de Santiago Tour.

Camino Ways Review: What I Liked About My Camino de Santiago Route Tour (Self-Guided)

While it’s possible to plan to go on a Camino walk on your own, my preference when doing a long trail hike like the  Last 100KM of the Camino  is to go with a company that organizes it all for you.

Here are the four biggest advantages I found from using Camino Ways for my self-guided tour especially for if it’ll be your first time:

1) Booking with Camino Ways saves SO much time

While you can plan everything yourself, it saves SO much time not having to research how far to walk each day, the best places to stay and the highlights along the way.

Camino Ways does all this time-consuming work for you to go back in time either to the 9th century or the 16th century!

2) You get Camino Ways’ expertise

They’ve walked the Camino routes. They’ve stayed in the hotels. You don’t have to spend hours looking up hotel reviews, their expert guides and tour leaders have done it all for you.

If you have questions about  which Camino  is the right one for you, they’ll help you decide. While the Camino Frances is the most popular one, you may find that the Camino del Norte or the Camino Portugues is a better fit for you. And both finish in Santiago.

As a result of their expertise, you get a much better experience and a great trip than if you did it alone. Their trip route notes point out tricky spots to watch out for, so you don’t get lost. I just love these insider tips!

They also include highlights so that you don’t inadvertently walk by something of historic value that you would have been interested in, had you only known.

3) They organize luggage transfers

If you only want to walk with a small day pack, you’ll need baggage transfer. Camino Ways organizes this for you. Every day my luggage was waiting for me by the time I arrived at my accommodation, this just shows the great attention the give to their clients.

4) 24/7 Trip Support

On your Camino de Santiago self-guided tour, you’ll have a phone number you can call 24/7 if you need assistance.

Whether there’s an issue with your accommodation, you sprained your ankle and can’t continue or something else, they have wonderful people  there to advise you.

I didn’t need to contact them when I did the  Last 100 KM of the Camino , but I did contact them when I did their self-guided  Wicklow Way in Ireland  through their subsidiary company IrelandWays.com.

When I did their self-guided  La Gomera Hiking Tour  in the Canary Islands through their other subsidiary company CanariaWays.com I also contacted them. Knowing that you have someone to call when something goes wrong is HUGE stress relief.

As you can see, I’m such a big fan of Greenlife Tours Ltd and their subsidiaries; I’ve used them three times.

That’s why I’m pleased to give you a discount code so that you can get €20 off your own Camino tour (applies to all Camino tours):

GET €20 OFF YOUR CAMINO. USE CODE ‘MONKEYSCAMINO’ AT CHECKOUT

One of the reasons my review of Camino Ways is so high is that they offer a choice of Caminos.

Camino Ways Review: What I Didn’t Like About My Camino de Santiago Tours (Self-Guided), Northern Spain

In providing a review, I think it’s important to be honest. While overall, I was very happy with my Camino trip of note is that I chose the “Standard Accommodation” package.

Some of the accommodations were great, others were just fine. Clean, but nothing special.

If you’re looking for a special holiday and are picky about accommodation, then I’d highly recommend choosing either the “Country Cottages” or “Superior Collection” accommodations instead, this will give you more chances of having a wonderful experience on your trip.

I loved seeing the famous Camino de Santiago tour markings while walking.

What Else to Consider When Booking Your Camino de Santiago Tour with Camino Ways

Camino Ways has packages that include dinner, but it’s also possible to get it without dinner. There are pros and cons to both.

Pros of having dinner included:  you don’t have to find a good place to eat, it will likely save you money since accommodations have special deals when you book accommodation and dinner at the same time.

Cons of having dinner included:  many places was a set Pilgrim menu so if you like to choose your own food, this isn’t a good choice. I also found that some of the restaurants were OK, but nothing special.

Finally, you’ll likely meet other pilgrims and meet new friends while trekking the ancient pilgrimage routes, it’s nice to meet up for dinner if you all get along.

But if you already have set dinner plans, you may find yourself missing out. It’s for this last reason that I’d recommend getting it without dinners, but this is a personal preference.

Choose Your Type of Camino Tour

They offer the regular Last 100Km of the Buen Camino experience but also have an “Easy Walking” tour or you can cycle it. Be realistic about what is the best option for you and your fitness level as you visit these historic cities.

Luggage Transfer on the Camino

You can choose to carry your own stuff in your backpack or choose luggage transfer. I chose the luggage transfer option and loved it but again, it’s a personal preference.

It may also depend if you have additional travel plans where you need other luggage.

Me at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the finish point of the Camino.

Travel Insurance On Your Camino de Santiago Tour

Travel insurance  isn’t included, but I always highly recommend it for any trip, especially a physically active one like walking the Camino. Look for one that covers the following:

  • loss or theft of bags, tech items like a camera, computer or mobile phone and gear. Note if you choose luggage transfer your bags may be left unsupervised so don’t put anything valuable in your bag, like your credit cards.
  • medical and dental insurance during your travels
  • medical repatriation (in case you get ill and need assistance getting back home)
  • delayed baggage
  • trip cancellation insurance

That’s why I recommend  HeyMondo  (get a 5% discount for being a Monkeys and Mountains reader). They have plans that cover all of these. I think travel insurance is always a good idea but especially when doing physical activity. It’s important to protect yourself. Read more about our  adventure travel insurance  tips.

You have limited vacation time. You work hard for your money. Therefore, you’d want to have a great experience on your incredible vacation! I get it. So do I. That’s why I highly recommend booking with Camino Ways.

May it be pilgrim routes, fishing villages, small villages, medieval towns, or dramatic coastlines you’re looking for in a vacation, Camino Ways has all the best routes and good places for you! It’s an ideal trip you can take while someone else does all the planning for you, from where to stay, where to eat, and what to eat.

What to Know Before Booking a National Park Trip This Summer

Additional routes in popular parks now require reservations, the annual pass gets a big change, Juneteenth is now a new free entrance day and more changes for 2024.

A deep-blue mountain creek with evergreen trees and brown grasses along its shores is in front of a towering gray mountain peak scattered with snow.

By Lauren Matison

In 2023, the seashores, lakeshores, battlefields, historic sites, monuments and more that make up the National Park Service had 325.5 million visits , an increase of 4 percent from the year before.

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened inside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offers more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .
