10 Best Excursions in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, in 2024

Home | Travel | Europe | Spain | Canary Islands | Lanzarote | 10 Best Excursions in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, in 2024

A Lanzarote tour is a practical and easy way to explore the main points of interest on the island. There are plenty of fun Lanzarote excursions to choose from, and, best of all, you don’t have to worry about organizing the itinerary and transportation.

Since there are all kinds of tours and day trips available, I’m sharing the best excursions around the island. You have your pick of more general tours through Lanzarote as well as specific excursions that let you explore the top attractions in Lanzarote in more detail. There are even day trips from Lanzarote to other Canary Islands.

To sum up, these are the 10 best guided tours in Lanzarote :

  • Full day Lanzarote tour
  • Timanfaya National Park
  • Excursion to La Graciosa
  • Dolphin-watching tour
  • Papagayo beaches cruise
  • Hike through Los Volcanes Natural Park
  • Tour to Fuerteventura
  • Isla de Lobos
  • César Manrique tour
  • Scuba diving excursion

As you see, you don’t need to rent a car in Lanzarote to explore this unique island .

1. Full day Lanzarote tour, the best excursion in Lanzarote

This day tour is the perfect Lanzarote excursion if you’re short on time but want to see all the island’s main attractions. Over the course of nine hours, you’ll visit interesting areas like Timanfaya National Park , the Cueva de los Verdes , and the Jameos del Agua .

First, Timanfaya National Park is one of the most famous places in Lanzarote thanks to its incredible volcanic landscapes. With this tour, you’ll visit the park and do the Route of the Volcanoes , a bus ride through the Fire Mountains. Then, head to the Visitors Center where you’ll watch impressive geothermal demonstrations.

Cueva de los Verdes, lanzarote walking tours

1. Full day Lanzarote tour, the best quick tour in Lanzarote

Afterward, head to the Cueva de los Verdes , another intriguing place that originated from a volcanic eruption many years ago. Here, you’ll travel through part of a 3.7-mile lava tunnel, which extends from the volcano’s crater to the sea.

The last stop on this Lanzarote tour is the Jameos del Agua , a unique cavern shaped by volcanic lava. Inside, you’ll see a beautiful natural lake and white crabs, an endemic species in Lanzarote. Don’t forget to check out the café here, as well as the gardens designed by César Manrique, Lanzarote’s most prestigious local artist.

  • Highlights : Timanfaya National Park, Cueva de los Verdes, Jameos del Agua
  • Duration : 9 hours
  • Price from : €63
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Playa Honda, Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero and Playa Blanca .

2. Timanfaya, one of the most famous excursions in Lanzarote

If you have time, I highly recommend doing a tour specifically in Timanfaya. This tour in particular is one of the most popular excursions in Lanzarote and takes you to Timanfaya National Park and its surroundings.

Visiting Timanfaya is a must-do while you’re on Lanzarote since it boasts unique geological formations and stunning landscapes. Despite being devoid of vegetation, the area is bathed in shades of black, gray, ochre, orange, and red.

Timanfaya National Park, excursions from lanzarote

At Timanfaya’s Visitors Center , you can watch intriguing geothermal demonstrations to see how the underlayers of soil still emit heat from the last volcanic eruptions. Then, continue your Lanzarote volcano tour by taking a bus ride along the Route of the Volcanoes . During the 35-minute ride, you’ll see the beautiful expanses of Timanfaya’s various landscapes and some of the most active volcanoes in Lanzarote .

The second leg of this day tour through Lanzarote takes you to the town of El Golfo . Here, you’ll see Los Hervideros , a series of rock formations along the coast. You’ll also visit Charco de Los Clicos , a natural crater lake known for its green waters, a result of the high concentrations of sulfur here.

While there are other tours to Timanfaya , this particular excursion is one of my favorites since it includes a visit to La Geria . This town is famous for its vineyards, which must use specific cultivation methods to produce wine in the volcanic soil.

  • Highlights : Timanfaya National Park
  • Duration : 7 hours
  • Price from : €40
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise, Arrecife, and Puerto del Carmen .

3. La Graciosa, the best excursion from Lanzarote to other Canary Islands

Although Lanzarote has a lot to offer, there are other nearby islands that are worth discovering. If you have time, a visit to La Graciosa is one of the best day trips from Lanzarote you can do. I recommend this tour , which includes transportation and takes you to several main attractions in La Graciosa.

This excursion from Lanzarote begins with a bus ride to the Órzola port on the northern coast of the island. From here, you’ll take the 25-minute ferry ride to La Graciosa, ending up in the capital, Caleta de Sebo . Take some time to walk along the picturesque streets and admire the relaxed atmosphere of the smallest Canary Island.

La Graciosa, day trips from lanzarote

Later, you’ll board a catamaran and cruise along the southern coast of La Graciosa while enjoying mojitos and snacks. After sailing for a while, you’ll disembark at Playa Francesa , one of the best beaches in Lanzarote . Here, you’ll have free time to splash around in the turquoise waters, go snorkeling or kayaking, or sunbathe on the sand. Also, this Lanzarote tour includes a paella lunch and an open bar. In the afternoon, you’ll take the catamaran back to the Caleta de Sebo pier, where the ferry will take you back to Lanzarote.

Keep in mind that if you’d rather not take an organized tour, you can drive yourself to Órzola and board this ferry to La Graciosa. While you’ll have the freedom to manage your time and choose what to do, I prefer the day tour with the catamaran cruise, which I think is well worth the price.

  • Highlights : La Graciosa
  • Duration : 6 hours
  • Price from : €65
  • Departs from : Puerto Calero, Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Órzola .

4. The best dolphin-watching tour from Lanzarote

Seeing dolphins in Lanzarote is a one-of-a-kind experience that you can’t miss while visiting the island. I highly recommend this speedboat tour to see dolphins, whales, and other marine animals around Lanzarote.

While cruising along the coast, you’ll get panoramic views of Lanzarote and the open water. This Lanzarote dolphin tour also includes some free time to swim and snorkel in the crystal clear waters.

La Palma dolphins, Lanzarote dolphin tour

Moreover, this is one of the best boat trips in Lanzarote because it’s carried out with great care and respect for the natural environment and marine life. You’ll get an overview of the tour and what to expect before setting sail, and your guide will tell you all about the different aquatic species you’ll see off the coast.

  • Highlights : Watching dolphins and other cetaceans
  • Duration : 2 hours
  • Price from : €31
  • Departs from : Puerto del Carmen .

5. Papagayo beaches cruise, the best boat tour in Lanzarote

This is the best thing to do if you hire a yacht in Lanzarote , but if you can’t afford it, another great boat tour in Lanzarote is this cruise to the beaches of Papagayo . During the 4-hour trip, you’ll sail on the crystal clear waters around Lanzarote and enjoy the beautiful virgin beaches along the coast.

The tour begins with a transfer to Puerto del Carmen , one of the island’s main towns. From here, you’ll board the boat and set sail for your cruise around Lanzarote. Sip on a refreshing mojito and fuel up with complimentary tapas as your guide explains the itinerary for this Lanzarote tour .

Papagayo Beach, tours lanzarote canary islands

As you enjoy your boat ride, you’ll approach Papagayo Beach, where you’ll disembark and have free time to sunbathe or do some watersports. This excursion from Lanzarote also includes lunch, which is served on the boat before making the return journey to the port.

If you’re on a tighter budget, don’t worry because you can still visit Papagayo Beach. This kayak and snorkel tour is a more affordable option that lets you see the beach and get close to the marine life, including starfish, schools of fish, and even manta rays.

Moreover, the tour includes all the necessary snorkeling or kayaking equipment and professional instruction. The kayak ride last about an hour, followed by about 45 minutes of free time to go snorkeling.

  • Highlights : Papagayo beaches
  • Duration : 2-4 hours
  • Price from : €46-€65
  • Departs from : Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, and Costa Teguise .

6. Hike through Los Volcanes Natural Park, the top Lanzarote hiking tour

If you enjoy hiking, you’ll love this guided hike through Los Volcanes Natural Park. It’s one of the best walking tours in Lanzarote since you’ll get to see Los Volcanes Natural Park and its neighbor, Timanfaya National Park. The hike lasts about three hours, during which you’ll immerse yourself in the otherworldly volcanic landscapes of the park.

The route is about 4.3 miles long and goes past amazing calderas, craters, and lava tunnels. What makes this Lanzarote hiking tour stand out is the spectacular panoramic view of the landscape, which features shades of black, brown, orange, and red.

Tremesana, guided tours lanzarote

Also, this guided tour of Timanfaya includes pick-up service from different parts of the island. You can opt to do the tour without pick-up, although you’ll have to get to the meeting point at Finca Testeina car park on your own.

Finally, your hiking guide will tell you all about the volcanic eruptions that ravaged the island hundreds of years ago. For me, it’s one of the best overall Lanzarote excursions , so don’t miss it.

  • Highlights : Los Volcanes Natural Park
  • Departs from : Tour without pick-up: Finca Testeina car park, Tías. Tour with pick-up: Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, and Puerto del Carmen .

7. Tour to Fuerteventura, the best Lanzarote day trip

Fuerteventura is one of the most beautiful Canary Islands , as well as the second-largest. Known for its sand dunes and over 90 miles of virgin sand beaches, it makes for a wonderful day trip from Lanzarote . So, if you want to see Fuerteventura for yourself, I recommend this tour , which includes pick-up from several areas of Lanzarote.

After picking you up, the bus will take you to the port of Playa Blanca , one of the most important tourist centers on Lanzarote. From there, you’ll board the ferry and take the 30-minute ride to the Corralejo port in Fuerteventura.

Dunes of Corralejo, buggy tours lanzarote

Once you disembark, you’ll be able to explore the most popular places in Fuerteventura , such as El Cotillo , a charming fishing village by the sea. Get lost in the picturesque streets and visit El Tostón Castle, a defensive tower built in the 15 th century.

The next stop is my favorite, Corralejo , a town full of delicious seafood restaurants, narrow streets, and beautiful architecture. The tour ends with a stop at Corralejo Natural Park, where you can see the famous dunes and take a dip in the ocean.

This Lanzarote day tour to Fuerteventura is worth the price, but if you prefer to make the trip on your own, you can take the ferry from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura .

  • Highlights : Fuerteventura
  • Price from : €53
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen, and Playa Blanca .

8. Isla de Lobos, a day trip from Lanzarote to another incredible island

Although you can no longer see sea lions from Isla de Lobos , there are plenty of other things to see and do here. While Isla de Lobos is a small island, it makes for one of the best day trips from Lanzarote . With this excursion , you can explore one of the best hidden treasures in the Canary archipelago.

The tour begins with a bus transfer to the Puerto del Carmen marina. From there, you’ll board a boat and sail along the Lanzarote coast to Isla de Lobos. This area is frequented by dolphins and whales, so keep your eyes peeled for these majestic creatures! Not only that, but the views from this Lanzarote boat tour are extraordinary, so you won’t regret it.

Isla de Lobos, lanzarote day trips

Once you arrive at Isla de Lobos, you’ll have time to explore its small town and experience its relaxed atmosphere. Swim in the crystal clear waters, walk along the virgin sand beaches, and lose track of time while admiring the natural environment.

Finally, this excursion includes lunch onboard the boat, making it one of the best underrated tours from Lanzarote .

  • Highlights : Lobos Island
  • Duration : 5 hours
  • Price from : €61
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero, and Playa Blanca .

9. C ésar Manrique tour, an impressive cultural tour in Lanzarote

César Manrique was a famous painter and sculptor born in the Canary Islands, and he remains the most pivotal artist in Lanzarote. His career was spent preserving the island’s historical monuments while designing sustainable landscapes and gardens with respect to the natural ecosystem.

Moreover, Manrique was a renowned environmentalist, and he left a profound cultural legacy here, which has spread throughout the world. So, if you love art, nature, or you’re just curious about Manrique, I recommend taking this excursion .

Cactus Garden, lanzarote day trip

9. César Manrique tour, an impressive cultural tour in Lanzarote

During this Lanzarote day tour , you’ll discover the world of César Manrique and visit his prestigious art centers: the Monumento al Campesino , the Cactus Garden , the Mirador del Río , and the César Manrique Foundation . In addition, you’ll get a brief tour of Lanzarote’s northern end, including the Haría , the Riscos de Famara , and the Volcán de la Corona .

Finally, this Lanzarote excursion includes the option to visit either the Jameos del Agua or the Cueva de los Verdes . These two natural areas were formed from volcanic eruptions and represent two of the most iconic sites in Lanzarote. Their stunning formations and colors influenced Manrique, as you can see in his works.

  • Highlights : Monumento al Campesino, the Cactus Garden, the Mirador del Río, and the César Manrique Foundation. Option to see the Jameos del Agua or the Cueva de los Verdes.
  • Duration : 8 hours

10. Scuba diving, a Lanzarote excursion you can’t miss

Last but not least, this diving tour is one of the overall best excursions from Lanzarote . I recommend this tour if you’ve already seen the most famous landmarks on the island and want to explore the seabed off the coast.

During this tour, you’ll learn some basic techniques and how to use the diving equipment. Then, choose between one or two 40-minute dives about 13 feet below the sea.

Scuba diving, excursions lanzarote

Among the sights you’ll see, the bay of Costa Teguise is a calm area full of marine life. Keep an eye out for species like porgies, ornate wrasses, spider crabs, and even squids.

  • Highlights : Scuba diving
  • Duration : 3 hours
  • Price from : €70-€101
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise

As you can see, there are all kinds of tours from Lanzarote , from half-day excursions to full-day trips, and tours on land and sea. I know you’ll find an option that suits your preferences! Of course, if you have any questions or you’d like to share your experience taking one of these Lanzarote excursions , leave me a comment. I’d love to hear from you. Until then, safe travels!

  • Complete information on each excursion and the closest pick-up to your accommodation.
  • Guaranteed satisfaction as shown by our clients’ comments and evaluations.
  • More than 10 years of experience in the Canary Islands.

For the bus excursions, when making your reservation and entering the data of your accommodation or address, the closest pick-up place and time to your accommodation will appear automaticall y. A photo of the collection point and a map with directions on how to get to the collection point will appear on the reservation voucher.

We do not offer pick-ups at all hotels to speed up the pick-up time for all clients.

In the other excursions, once you make your reservation, we’ll contact you to provide you with the closest pick-up time and place to your accommodation.

In any case, in the Frequently Asked Questions of almost all the excursions, the pick-up and drop-off times appears depending on the area where you’re staying.

Reservations are always made online , neither by phone nor in person.

During the booking process we’ll tell you how much to pay, since in most cases, unless it’s a group of more than 4 people, a guarantee has to be paid when booking, and the rest can be paid in cash, at the meeting point.

There are basically two payment methods: 1.- Paypal and 2.- Credit or debit card.

If you want to guarantee a spot, book as far in advance as possible as we can fill all the places for the day you’re interested in at any time. Additionally, if you cancel as far in advance as possible, we will refund you for the amount paid as a guarantee.

Even though you can visit a large part of the monuments and emblematic places within Lanzarote on your own, we recommend excursions with guided tours for various reasons:

  • To avoid the long queues that form when entering some CACTs.
  • An official guide will give you all the information about the island and the places you visit and will answer any questions you may have. That way, you’ll get the most out of the tour.
  • You’ll travel in comfortable buses, always being able to admire the landscape.
  • In the Timanfaya National Park visit, even if you go by yourself, in addition to having to buy the park entrance ticket, you’ll have to pay to take the bus tour along the volcano highway. You can’t do it on your own.
  • We’ll pick you up and drop you off back at your accommodation or close to it.
  • You’ll be able to see more things in less time. The routes are planned to maximize our time and to visit the greatest number of places, while always having more than enough time to see them.

In addition to guided visits to the most impressive places in Lanzarote, we also offer excursions to La Graciosa, boat trips to Isla de Lobos and a day trip to Fuerteventura.

Children can do all the tours, but we have prepared a list of the best tours for families with children in Lanzarote .

Here are the excursions you can do depending on the day of the week.

Day trips and excursions in Lanzarote

Enjoy the best Lanzarote excursions in Lanzarote. Check complete information of each tour with pictures, reviews, maps and details of the route. Book with the best price guaranteed and enjoy some of the most beautiful moments with our day trips.

Lanzarote is like a large theme park full of attractions that are worth visiting through the different organized excursions that we propose. In our tours, you will find the main places to see and visit in Lanzarote so that you make the most of your stay on the island.

For your convenience, all of the tours have pick-up points in the tourist centres of Costa Teguise , Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca , in addition to a pick-up point in the capital, Arrecife .

We have divided the excursions into three main categories: bus tours, boat trips and jeep excursions.

You can do the tours with children , alone, with your partner or with a group of friends.

The bus excursions are the most popular for comfortably getting to know the island’s most emblematic places. The tours take place in modern buses driven by expert drivers. The guides who accompany you are official guides who will illustrate the history, culture and stories of the landmarks throughout the trip.

The variety offered by these tours allows you to visit the most impressive places on the island in just a few days. Because most of our routes combine the different landmarks, we can divide the itineraries into three groups:

In the volcano tours ,we will visit Timanfaya National Park , the island’s great attraction and most-visited place. Most of Lanzarote’s volcanoes are concentrated here. On these tours, you can camel ride , go on a tour along the volcano road and see for yourself, through different experiments, why this park is also known as the Fire Mountains.

In the cave excursions , we will visit two magical places on the island, two volcanic tubes created by the Corona Volcano where art and nature have been combined: Los Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes.

You can also visit other works of Cesar Manrique in this unique island of the Canary Islands: the Jardín de cactus ( Cactus Garden ), el monumento al campesino (Monument to the Farmer), el Mirador del Río ( River Lookout), Lagomar, the house where Manrique lived (which is now the headquarters for the Cesar Manrique Foundation ).

On our bus tours through Lanzarote we will also see places as outstanding as the Green Lagoon, the Salinas de Janubio, Teguise, the Hervideros or La Geria.

Day trips from Lanzarote

We also offer the possibility of doing a day trip from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura in order to explore the most important places to the north of the island.

On the boat trips , you can choose the option that suits you best in terms of the environment, route, type of boat, schedule and location of departure. You can do boat trips to Papagayo Beach , a La Graciosa tour from Lanzarote , or a Lobos island tour to enjoy a spectacular sunset, see dolphins or do an aquatic activity like kayaking or snorkelling.

The Jeep safaris are ideal for getting to know the island and enjoying an adventure at the same time. On these Jeep routes, you can visit places that are difficult for other vehicles to access, such as those on dirt roads or that are very narrow and/or winding. Visiting Playa de Famara, Playa de Papagayo, or Santa Sport or walking inside a volcano can only be done on these Jeep tours.

In short, Lanzarote has many sites to discover and visit, impressive places that we make available to you with our different excursions so that you can enjoy them with the greatest guarantees, comfort and safety.

We only hope that upon finishing any of our tours, you return to your accommodations with the satisfaction of having enjoyed one of the best days of your stay in Lanzarote, full of unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

13. Excursión a Fuerteventura

Excursions Lanzarote - TImanfaya Tour

excursion a lanzarote

excursion a lanzarote

NOS CONSEILS POUR LOUER UNE VOITURE À Lanzarote

National Geographic content straight to your inbox—sign up for our popular newsletters here

A mountain village in northern Lanzarote. Palms are dotted around the otherwise flat landscape, and a sea of white houses can be seen in the distance.

The ultimate Canary Islands itinerary: 48 hours in Northern Lanzarote

Sensitive development, Canarian culinary pride and a strong artistic heritage are preserving this region’s identity — and helping it build a reputation as the island’s most alluring getaway.

The easternmost of Spain’s Canary Islands, off the south coast of Morocco, Lanzarote is defined by its natural drama. Eerily beautiful volcanic peaks, wind-lashed cliffs and vineyards of ashen soil give way to a rocky, lava-shaped coastline sprinkled with natural pools and deep-gold beaches. The island is protected by UNESCO as both a Biosphere Reserve and a Geopark, and it’s in the wild north that all this natural beauty shines brightest.

It’s impossible to fully grasp modern Lanzarote’s identity without understanding the huge influence of celebrated 20th-century local artist and environmental campaigner César Manrique, who played a major role in keeping the island’s development sensitive.

The handful of tourism-driven beach resorts that many associate with Lanzarote make up just a small part of the island — mostly in the south. In recent years, northern Lanzarote’s rich arts heritage, adventure opportunities and lively watersports activities have started to pull in growing numbers of travellers. The local food scene is flourishing, too, while creative designers and artists are restoring heritage buildings as boutique hotels.

Day 1: Villages, art & vineyards

Morning Begin at the Fundación César Manrique , on the edge of the town of Tahíche. The artist created his home here in the late 1960s by adapting natural lava rock bubbles made by an 18th-century eruption. Often called the Casa del Volcán (Volcano House), Manrique lived here for two decades; its galleries show his paintings and sculptures.

A 10-minute drive north lies Teguise, originally an Indigenous Majo settlement, then the island’s capital after the 1402 European conquest until 1852. Stroll around the historic centre and artists’ studios before lunch at the lively Teleclub de Mozaga ; born as cultural centres in the 1960s, Lanzarote’s teleclubs specialise in traditional cooking.

Afternoon Lanzarote makes some excellent wines and La Geria, the island’s wine region, is worth an afternoon tour. The vineyards are unusual, with vines growing in volcanic ash, traditionally rooted in distinctive deep, circular hollows. In recent years a crop of new wineries has emerged, with younger generations taking over family businesses and fresh wine-makers being drawn to Lanzarote.

A group of people tour a vineyard in Lanzarote. The sun is shining, and in the background mountains scale the scene.

Led by local wine expert Ollie Horton, who’s lived on the island for years, Wine Tours Lanzarote runs small-group trips to innovative independent and renowned bodegas, where you’ll see the grape-growing process and taste wines — including the island’s classic white Malvasía Volcánica.

Evening Push on to the Atlantic-whipped north coast, where sunset illuminates the cliffs above three-mile-long Famara Beach — a vision that perfectly encapsulates Lanzarote’s rugged beauty. The tiny, oceanfront village here, Caleta de Famara, has a laid-back surfing culture, superb restaurants and traditional whitewashed houses with photogenic sky-blue shutters.

Right on the waterfront, stay for dinner at El Risco , which has made a name for itself with its creative Canarian dishes. The former fisherman’s house was remodelled by César Manrique and one of his original 1980s murals still adorns the wall. Diners can also sit out on the small terrace overlooking the Famara cliffs and Isla Graciosa.

Day 2: Palm groves & natural pools

Morning Start your foray into the secluded northernmost stretch of the island in Haría, a cluster of whitewashed buildings hidden in the Valle de las Mil Palmeras — the Valley of a Thousand Palms. The village is known for its busy Saturday-morning artisanal market, but it’s equally rewarding (and quieter) to visit at other times.

Wander past buildings with bright-green doors and shutters, typical of inland Lanzarote, to reach the Casa-Museo César Manrique at the southwest end of town, where the artist spent the final few years of his life. In the late 1980s, Manrique restored and extended a finca in a palm grove into a tranquil rural home, with classic furniture he designed himself and bathrooms drowning in lush greenery. Out the back, his studio is displayed pretty much as it was when he died in a car accident in 1992 .

Afternoon Drive 10 minutes southeast to the relaxed village of Arrieta for lunch overlooking La Garita Beach. One of several superb seafood restaurants in town, La Casa de la Playa is a popular haunt with its ocean-facing terrace and serves up the likes of fresh fish of the day, papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) and seafood rice dishes.

Afterwards, go swimming at Punta Mujeres, a small fishing village just north of Arrieta with a string of locally popular natural pools dotted along the waterfront. You could spend the entire afternoon relaxing here, but make time to dive into a final Manrique creation. Just five minutes’ drive north, the Jameos del Agua is a millennia-old volcanic tube that was reimagined by Manrique in the 1960s. It’s now a spectacular cultural space with bars, restaurants, a lagoon pool and concert hall.

Houses face a sea pool which has naturally formed in the sea bed. The water is greeny blue, and is clear and calm.

Evening A scenic drive takes you back towards the Teguise area for the evening. Follow the LZ202, which loops past the Manrique-designed Mirador del Río lookout with views across to tiny Isla Graciosa, before taking the LZ10 south from Haría via Peñas del Chache, the highest point on the island. Nights in Teguise tend to be quiet, but there’s always a buzz at Cantina Teguise , where Haría-made smoked cheeses, burgers and Padrón peppers are served alongside wines from local bodegas like Vulcano and Bermejos in a restored 500-year-old house.

Or head over to Costa Teguise, a 15-minute drive southeast, for dinner at SeBE , a restaurant that ranks among the island’s finest — it specialises in arroces (rice dishes) and seafood plates such as giant La Santa shrimp and smoked octopus with lentils.

Top three hiking trails in Northern Lanzarote

1. Caldera Blanca Hiking within Lanzarote’s fabled Parque Nacional de Timanfaya is only permitted on short guided routes with limited, pre-booked spots. However, plenty of unrestricted hikes weave through the surrounding Parque Natural de Los Volcanes. The Caldera Blanca loop tracks 5.5-miles up to the rim of an enormous volcanic crater, with views across Timanfaya’s volcanoes.

2. Volcán de la Corona As you venture towards Lanzarote’s northernmost tip, it’s impossible to miss the lichen-covered, 2,000ft-tall bulk of the now-extinct Volcán de La Corona. Follow a 3.7-mile return uphill path from the village of Yé to reach the rim, with views across the volcanic landscapes known as Malpaís de la Corona. Olita Trek & Bike offers excellent guided hikes across the island, including a northern route taking in the Volcán de la Corona.

3. Haría to the Mirador Risco de Famara Some of the most inspiring views on the entire island are from the isolated, spine-tingling Mirador Risco de Famara, halfway between Teguise and Haría. The official Haría Circular trail (6.6 miles) passes through here, or you can hike up along a path through the Barranco Elvira Sánchez valley from Haría and return via the long-distance GR131 (around 2.7 miles each way).

Surfing on Famara Many experienced surfers come to Lanzarote just to catch the famous Atlantic waves in Famara, with the Risco de Famara cliffs looming high above miles of golden volcanic sand, or at other nearby spots like El Quemao, a renowned challenge even for professionals. Famara Beach is known for having reliably good waves almost year-round.

November to February are popular months for those with experience. Complete beginners might prefer the gentler summer waves, but most local surf schools can adapt sessions to your level at any time of year. Surf School Lanzarote is a long-established, International Surfing Association-accredited academy based in Famara, offering small-group classes and courses as well as private sessions for all abilities.

Isla Graciosa A narrow stretch of ocean known as El Río (The River) separates the northern tip of Lanzarote from remote Isla Graciosa , which is a superb day-trip destination for adventurous souls. First settled in the 1860s by a handful of families, this tiny island sits within the now strictly protected Chinijo Archipelago, a richly biodiverse pocket of the Canaries that’s home to a wide variety of birds and marine life.

Ferries depart regularly from Órzola (Lanzarote’s northernmost town) for the harbour village of Caleta de Sebo, Isla Graciosa’s only full-time settlement. Most day-trippers head straight for the sandy beaches near the village, but the most rewarding way to explore the island is by hiring a bike. Caleta de Sebo has a few unfussy restaurants, or bring a picnic.

Windsurfing & wingfoiling Strategically positioned on Lanzarote’s windswept northeast shores, the easygoing resort town of Costa Teguise has grown into a popular hub for windsurfing in the Canaries since it was first put on the map in the 1990s. Much of the action centres on golden Playa de las Cucharas, the town’s flagship half-moon beach.

The main season runs from March to September and, due to the geography of the bay, conditions are regularly sheltered enough for beginners. Well-established Windsurfing Club Las Cucharas runs courses for all levels. In recent years, wingfoiling — a sport that combines elements of windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing — has also boomed here, while paddleboarding offers a more relaxing way to explore on the water.

Local specialties to try in Northern Lanzarote

Lanzarote cheeses Most of the island’s goat’s cheeses are made using the fresh milk of the native cabra majorera, often by family-owned cheese farms that still use traditional methods. Rinds are typically infused with island ingredients such as rosemary and paprika. It’s often served grilled or baked, drizzled with fresh mojo — a local sauce made with coriander, parsley or paprika.

Caldo de millo This maize-based plato de cuchara (spoon dish) made with Canarian potatoes and chickpeas is a classic recipe across the archipelago. In Lanzarote, a local variation of the stew is prepared with pork ribs, often for family gatherings and festivals.

Papas arrugadas In Lanzarote, you’re almost guaranteed to end up feasting on these deliciously salty ‘wrinkly potatoes’. Typically made with locally grown papas bonitas — an ancient variety of Canarian potato — the small, skin-on potatoes are served either as a starter with mojos to dip in or alongside seafood and meat dishes.

Gofio A versatile flour made from toasted grain, gofio was an important staple for the Canaries’ Indigenous Guanche communities. Today, it remains a key ingredient, usually made with wheat or maize, or both. It adds an earthy flavour to soups, stews, cheeses and desserts.

Lapas Limpets were once considered suitable only for those in desperate hunger, which was sadly often the case in the isolated Canary Islands. Now known among chefs for their distinctive texture, these aquatic snails are under strict harvest regulations and only appear on Lanzarote’s menus sporadically. They’re usually served grilled with mojo of parsley or coriander.
