For the past 15 years, Fred Campbell has traveled relentlessly across eastern Canada to fly fish for Atlantic salmon. In the rich territories of Nunavik, Labrador, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Quebec, he has discovered beautiful rivers where these mysterious fish come to spawn. After all these years, his passion and curiosity are still strong. His desire to get in touch with the fish of a lifetime has grown over the years, pushing him to continue learning and exploring. Stories of great salmon have been heard, but for them to take the fly, many factors must align.

This year, to celebrate Hooké’s 10th anniversary, Fred went on a trip to three rivers where he had never fished, in search of the fish he had been dreaming of all these years. Accompanied by local guides and good friends, he ventured out on the Causapscal, Patapedia and Restigouche rivers for the trip of a lifetime where only the salmon know why they take the fly.

“Triple Trouble” – An official selection of the 2024 Fly Fishing Film Tour

For MB, it’s time. She’s long dreamed of going to the salt to chase a new species on a fly rod, and now, it’s her opportunity. But there’s a hitch. She’s not interested in the A-list of fly fishing species. Permit? Not right now. Bonefish? Might be nice. Trevally? Well, that’s a long plane ride. No, MB wants to do this her way. She wants… a tripletail.

For Danielle, saltwater species are home. From the Eastern shore of Mobile bay, all the way to the Florida Keys, she’s cut her teeth on every saltwater species imaginable. She’s passionate about protecting tripletail and raising awareness for the species.

Together, they’ll travel across the south, deep into the Alabama River delta to try and catch what many consider one of the most unique fish in saltwater.

Mending The Line Cast & Character Guide

  • "Mending the Line" follows the journey of a traumatized Marine forming an unlikely bond with a veteran through fishing therapy.
  • The movie, directed by Joshua Caldwell, boasts a dynamic cast praised for their performances.
  • The film's cast includes Brian Cox, Sinqua Walls, and Perry Mattfeld.

Mending the Line chronicles a traumatized Marine returning from war and striking an unlikely friendship with a hardened veteran, and the movie features a dynamic cast with various familiar faces. The drama film, directed by Joshua Caldwell and written by Stephen Camelio, premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival on September 29, 2022, before its theatrical release on June 9, 2023. Mending the Line received praise from critics and audiences alike for its strong cast (among other positive attributes). The movie holds an 80 percent rating on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and an Audience Score of 82 percent.

At the beginning of Mending the Line , a Marine named John Colter is on a tour in Afghanistan when a tragedy physically and mentally affects him, sending him home to Montana. There, Colter's doctor instructs him to try fishing as therapy, and his guide is a veteran, Ike Fletcher. The two characters struggle to make their new situation as fishing buddies work at first. But as Mending the Line progresses, Colter and Ike start to warm up to one another (and another character, Lucy, joins them in their mutually beneficial therapeutical relationship).

Brian Cox As Ike Fletcher

Brian cox is 77 years old.

Actor: Brian Cox was born on June 1, 1946, in Dundee, Scotland. The actor trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and graduated when he was 19. Following his graduation, Cox began working in several different theaters around the United Kingdom and performing in numerous shows. So, first and foremost, Cox is an acclaimed stage (and Shakespearean actor), who has won two Olivier Awards for his roles in Rat in the Skull and Titus Andronicus . However, Cox rose to prominence on the screen when he starred as Argyle Wallace in Braveheart in 1995.

Notable Movies & TV Shows:

Brian Cox was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards three times for his role as Logan Roy in Succession .

Character: Ike Fletcher, played by Brian Cox in Mending the Line , is a grumpy and (mostly) solitary Vietnam War veteran who has an affinity for fly-fishing in the Montana waters. A Department of Veterans Affairs doctor connects Ike with a newly discharged Marine, thinking that the two men can help one another out. However, Ike, as a recovering alcoholic, isn't happy with the situation. But as the two characters continue fishing and getting to know one another better, things start changing for the better.

Mending The Line Director Joshua Caldwell On Research That Made The Film Accurate

Sinqua walls as john colter, sinqua walls is 38 years old.

Actor: Sinqua Walls was born on April 6, 1985, in Louisiana, but he grew up in Marina del Rey, California. He knew he wanted to be an actor from a young age, so he studied theater and film at the University of San Francisco. After graduation, Walls began landing various small television roles, but his breakout came when he appeared as Jamarcus in eight episodes of Friday Night Lights (the NBC television series, not the film).

Notable Movies & TV Shows:

Character: Sinqua Walls stars as John Colter in the 2022 drama film. Mending the Line introduces Colter at the movie's beginning when he and his fellow Marine buddies are deployed in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, Colter is wounded (physically and mentally), and he returns home with PTSD and a drinking problem. Colter's doctor instructs him to seek Ike Fletcher, a veteran, for help in his recovery, and the two form an unlikely friendship.

Perry Mattfeld As Lucy

Perry mattfeld is 29 years old.

Actress: Perry Mattfeld was born on March 29, 2024, and she started working onstage as a ballerina when she was five years old. She continued dancing for many more years, but Mattfeld soon felt the itch to pursue an acting career (on the screen instead of the stage). Mattfeld studied acting and film theory at the University of Southern California (USC), School of Dramatic Arts, and following graduation, the actress began booking small parts on television. Mattfeld's breakout came when she played Mel in Shameless on Showtime.

Character: Perry Mattfeld portrays Lucy in the 2022 film Mending the Line . Like many of the other characters in the movie, Lucy is recovering from a personal tragedy, and she connects with Colter after he runs into her at the library (where she works). Lucy joins Colter and Ike fishing, and the peculiar duo becomes a trio.

Patricia Heaton As Dr. Burke

Patricia heaton is 66 years old.

Actress: Patricia Heaton was born on March 4, 1958, in Bay Village, Ohio. She studied drama at Ohio State University and moved to New York City after graduation to pursue a stage career. Heaton starred in a few plays before she set her sights on television. She ultimately booked several guest-starring roles (and a couple of leading parts). However, Heaton rose to prominence when she joined the cast of Everybody Loves Raymond as Debra Barone (which is undoubtedly still the actress' most recognizable role).

Patricia Heaton won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Debra in Everbody Loves Raymond .

Character: In Mending the Line , Patricia Heaton plays Dr. Burke, the Department of Veterans Affairs doctor who works with Ike and Colter. Dr. Burke is responsible for the two men's friendship, as she feels they can help one another.

Wes Studi As Harrison

Wes studi is 76 years old.

Actor: Wes Studi was born on December 17, 1947, in Nofire Hollow, Oklahoma, and was raised in a Cherokee family. Studi enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard and was stationed in Vietnam during the Vietnam War for one year. After he was discharged, Studi attended Tulsa Community College, where he studied acting. Studi, known for his Native American warrior roles, rose to prominence when he appeared as Toughest Pawnee in Dances with Wolves .

Wes Studi was one of the recipients of the Academy Honorary Award in 2019.

Character: Wes Studi stars as Harrison in Mending the Line . Harrison is one of Ike's few friends who connects with him over their shared passion for fly fishing, and Harrison later convinces Ike to agree to guide Colter.

Wes Studi On Mending The Line, Fly Fishing, And Working With Brian Cox

Mending the line supporting cast & characters.

Chris Galust as Kovacs - Chris Galust plays Kovacs, one of Colter's military buddies who survives the attack at the beginning of Mending the Line , but he has to have his legs amputated. Galust is known for his roles in Give Me Liberty and The Shade .

Pressly Coker as Blitz - Blitz, portrayed by Pressly Coker, is one of the men who die in Afghanistan in Mending the Line . Aside from the 2022 drama film, Coker has starred in shows such as Suits , General Hospital , and How I Met Your Father .

Julian Works as Ram - Julian Works stars as Ram, another of Colter's friends who dies in Afghanistan. Viewers may recognize Works from his role as Mateo Chavez in the cast of 9-1-1: Lone Star .

Irene Bedard as Mrs. Redcloud - Irene Bedard appears as Mrs. Redcloud, the mother of Ryan, Lucy's fiancé, who died, in Mending the Line . The audience may recognize Bedard's voice, as she was the voice of Pocahontas in the Disney animated film Pocahontas .

Michaela Sasner as Ruth - Ruth, played by Michaela Sasner, is Lucy's coworker at the library in the 2022 film. Aside from Mending the Line , Sasner has appeared in The Tutor and Deltopia .

Chris Grimaldi as Max - Chris Grimaldi stars as Max, Ike's estranged son who doesn't appear until the film's end. Mending the Line is the only acting credit listed on Grimaldi's IMDb page.

Mending the Line

Joshua Caldwell directs Mending the Line, a dramatic war-adjacent film that follows a wounded veteran known as John Colter upon his return to the United States after Afghanistan. With difficulty overcoming his trauma and finding something to live for, he meets an older fisherman named Ike and a young woman named Lucy, who begin to help him change his outlook and find a way forward.
