Cormier Plage

This beach is exclusive to guests of the Cormier Plage Resort, but you can pay a day fee to access this pristine segment on the Haitian north coast. The tiny, horseshoe-shaped bay is protected by lush mountains on all sides, and the water is an ethereal shade of green. The pristine beach is only broken by the occasional food shack selling freshly grilled fish and rum sours. Visit during the week, and you’ll practically have the place to yourself.

Marooned off the north coast of Haiti, Île a Rat (or Rat Island) is a tiny castaway pinprick in the ocean, fringed by unspoilt beach. Often overlooked in favor of its more sedate neighbors, Haiti still draws in curious visitors from all around the world. It’s home to extraordinary and interesting sights as well as vibrant and lively culture. This is the Caribbean, but a much rawer version than its luxury resort-dotted neighbour, The Dominican Republic .

You’ll also find plenty of gorgeous scenery as Haiti is home to peaceful beautiful beaches, cascading waterfalls, and towering mountains galore. Here are my favorite places I want to share with you… 

I personally think taking a cruise with Royal Caribbean is worth it just for a visit to Labadee, a peninsula on the scenic northern coast of Haiti leased privately to the cruise company! 

Visitors can enjoy this private paradise’s beautiful scenery on secluded, pristine beaches. Several gorgeous options include sandy shores, free beach chairs, extra amenities, and kayak trips. If you want even more privacy, Labadee is the home base for excursions to remote coves, reefs, and sandbars.

For those looking for more adventure, I suggest seeking out the overwater zipline (the world’s longest), an alpine coaster, a water park, and snorkeling excursions.

2. Amiga Island

Amiga Island is a stunning tropical island just a short boat ride from Labadee and Cap-Haitien. Visitors on private excursions can relax on pure sandy beaches, explore the green island interior, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean.

Coral reefs surround the island (some have dubbed them the best reefs in the country), making for exciting snorkeling and swimming! 

Despite being a remote island, Amiga Island also offers excellent amenities for tourists. All visitors get a complimentary drink to enjoy the strong flavors of Caribbean mixology (my favourite part!)

3. Cathedral Notre-Dame

Although not as famous as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Port-au-Prince (a site now in ruins and impossible to visit), the Cathedral Notre-Dame in Cap-Haitien is an underrated jewel in Haiti’s crown.

The first building on this site was built in 1670 by the French colonists but has undergone multiple reconstructions since then. It was the site of several important events in Haiti’s history, including the official proclamation liberating enslaved people in Haiti on August 29, 1793.

Visitors today can enjoy the gorgeous colonial facade and sizable nave. The square in front of the cathedral also offers excellent views of the sea and Cap-Haitien, so I suggest visiting there, too! 

4. Bassin Bleu

Located just a few kilometers outside Jacmel, Bassin Bleu is a gem! This natural getaway consists of waterfalls pouring over Haiti’s rocky terrain, forming three pools with stunning, mineral-rich turquoise waters. Visitors can swim right up to the waterfall for an unforgettable experience.

The natural area has a small parking lot, a 10-minute hike from the pools. Those just looking for a relaxing adventure can swim in the top pool around the waterfall.

Others who are more adventurous can rappel down the boulders into the lower lakes with the help of local guides.

5. Cadras Beach

Cadras Beach is a stunning spot located on the northern coast. Located near Grand Doco and only a short ride away from Labadee, it is a convenient excursion for many visitors to this region. Visitors can enjoy clear blue Caribbean waters and sandy shores.

In my opinion, the hinterlands of Cadras Beach are just as beautiful as the seashore. Gorgeous forests and verdant green areas surround the area.

Cadras Beach is not fancy but offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy the beach as the locals do. Take advantage of activities such as snorkeling and swimming.

6. Jardin Botanique des Cayes

Haiti’s tropical location is home to stunning biodiversity and plant life. One of the best ways to experience that biodiversity is by visiting the Jardin Botanique des Cayes , on the country’s southern peninsula.

A popular venue for weddings and other events among the locals and the site of important scientific research, the botanical garden is also a stunning experience for casual visitors.

Wander the perfectly sculpted hedgerows with a certified tour guide, who offers a tourist or scientific tour. Visitors can also wander the site independently and explore the themed gardens, including the Ethnobotanical Garden, the Arboretum, and more.

7. Kokoye Beach

One of the most stunning beaches in the country, I personally think remote Kokoye Beach is worth the trip! It is near Petit Goave, a small commune in the country’s west.

Visitors can only reach Kokoye Beach by taking an organized boat excursion from the town or hiking up by themselves. Once they reach Kokoye, they realize all the trouble is worth it.

The stunning beach is surrounded by rocky outcrops, which make for excellent snorkeling and cave exploration. In addition to the natural wonders, Kokoye Beach is home to great restaurants that even host live music.

8. Citadelle

The Citadelle (full name: Citadelle Laferrière) is one of the most important sites in Haitian history. The Haitian revolutionary Henri Christophe and thousands of newly emancipated Haitian people built this fortress on the northern coast in 1805 as a defence strategy against a potential French invasion.

Architecturally, the Citadelle is one of the few examples of Afro-colonial architecture in the New World, and it’s worth visiting just for its unique architectural features and awe-inspiring size! 

The fortress, located on top of the Bonnet a l’Eveque mountain, also offers stunning views of Cap-Haitien and the northern coast. Visitors often combine visiting the Citadelle with an excursion to the nearby Sans-Souci Palace.

9. Macaya National Park

Unfortunately, most of Haiti’s primordial wildlife has been cut down over the centuries, starting with French plantation agriculture and moving on to modern development.

Macaya National Park preserves the country’s last primary cloud forest, which modern development has not touched. Nestled in the Massif de la Hotte mountain chain that runs through the southern peninsula, Macaya is well worth the trip out.

Besides the old-growth forest, Macaya National Park is home to many indigenous plants, rare orchids, and animals, including the world’s largest concentration of native amphibians.

Visitors can hike the Macaya and Formon mountains, explore the forest, and photograph the stunning vegetation.

10. Gelee Beach

Gelee Beach, near Les Cayes, is one of Haiti’s most popular beaches for a reason. Locals come here for excursions, and visitors can soak up nature and the lively atmosphere of this country!

Gelee is a gorgeous beach with access to the stunning ocean, but that is true for most of Haiti’s beaches. What sets Gelee apart is the liveliness of the area. The beach is home to many restaurants that offer locally caught seafood and traditional Haitian cuisine.

I would highly recommend trying fritay , the traditional Haitian fried platters of food! At night, the beach turns into an open-air music festival, particularly in August, around the Lady of the Assumption festival, the area’s patron saint.

11. Saut-Mathurine Waterfall

Haiti’s southern region is home to Saut-Mathurine, the country’s largest waterfall. This gem is located off the beaten path and is perfect for nature lovers looking for a destination that has not been touched by development.

Getting there is a bit of a trek, with long drives along back roads, but it is worth the trip.

Visitors can swim in the pool at the waterfall’s base and take in the magnificence of the cascading water. The brave can jump from the top of the waterfall.

12. Anse d’Azur

Anse d’Azur still stands out in a country of stunning beaches with its turquoise waters and white sands. The beach is nestled in a protected cove on the Haitian coast, making for an excellent swimming experience.

Visitors can also explore the caves and caverns formed due to erosion, and the adventurous can check out the abandoned wreckage of a German submarine nestled in the water.

Anse d’Azur is only a short distance away from the city of Jeremie on the southwestern peninsula.

Located in the Massif de la Selle, a mountain range just south of Port-au-Prince, La Visite National Park is one of the most pristine destinations in the country.

Ten things to know about visiting Haiti

Haiti has been missing in action from the Caribbean tourism scene for years, but now it's stepping out from the shadows and proudly declaring itself one of the most distinctive and exciting countries for visitors to the region. Here are ten things you need to know.

Citadelle and Sans Souci

Haiti 's greatest gift to the world was its revolution, when it freed itself from slavery and French rule to become the world's first independent black republic. The  Citadelle la Ferrière is the revolution's most inspiring testament: a fortress that commands the jungle and farmland below from its mountain-top perch. At its foot sit the ruins of Sans Souci palace, a Versailles-in-the-tropics confection built by the revolutionary leader Henry Christophe. Together they comprise Haiti's sole Unesco World Heritage site and one of the Caribbean's truly unmissable attractions; with recent investment in visitor facilities, including a new museum, the attractions have never looked so good.

Jacmel and Carnival

The old coffee town of Jacmel on the south coast is Haiti's handicrafts capital. It's also home to the country's hottest carnival celebrations every February, when half the country seems to descend upon the town for a weekend of partying. Artisans spend half the year preparing, creating giant colorful papier-mâché sculptures for the parade, while other community groups re-enact traditional (and anarchic) street theater, all to a constant beat of Haitian rara music. You can recreate the carnival vibe at any time of year with a papier-mâché mask of your own from Jacmel's eclectic Moro  boutique.

Of all the Caribbean nations, perhaps none has a richer tradition of visual arts than Haiti. In Port-au-Prince even the heavily pimped-out and painted public transport (known locally as 'tap-taps') look like mobile art displays. The country first burst onto the international arts scene with its painters of the 1940s, and the capital abounds in galleries . But art isn't just on canvas: check out the Vodou-cyberpunk of the Grand Rue Artists , and the intricately carved and beaten metal work of the artisan village of Croix des Bouquets, just outside the capital.

Haiti makes a big point of being a unique Caribbean destination, but we shouldn't forget that it also has what attracts so many visitors to the region in the first place: fantastic beaches. Here, they have the added advantage of not having been over-developed by big-box resorts. The pick of the bunch is Port Salut on the south coast, with its miles of creamy sand and barely a tourist towel in sight – just a handful of private guesthouses and beach bars serving up rum and fish. The island of Ile-a-Vache, a short ferry ride from the city of Les Cayes, has a couple of small resorts offering a truly pampered beach-side escape.

Port-au-Prince

Port-au-Prince is a loud and hectic city. It's still recovering slowly from the 2010 earthquake, but don't expect to see any rubble – that was long cleared away. Instead, focus on its many positives. Its two biggest attractions are the national museum, Musée du Panthéon National , also known as Mupanah, and the Marché de Fer . Mupanah holds items from Haiti's history, from the anchor of one of Christopher Columbus's flagships to memorabilia from Papa Doc Duvalier. The Marché de Fer (Iron Market) is a bright Asian-influenced structure holding a busy market: shop here for everything from spices and art to Vodou paraphernalia. When you're done downtown, head up the hill to the restaurants and art galleries of the upscale neighborhood of Pétionville.

Natural wonders

The name Haiti means 'mountainous country' in the tongue of its original Taino Indian inhabitants, and within its endlessly folded landscape are hidden some of Haiti's most beautiful natural wonders. This is a country rich in waterfalls, many of which offer not just spectacle but great places to swim and picnic. Most famous are the falls at Saut d'Eau, which also attract a large number of Vodou and Catholic pilgrims every July to take its sacred waters. Equally beautiful are the cobalt-blue cascading pools of Bassins Bleu near Jacmel. Close to Port Salut you can also explore the spooky caves of Grotte Marie-Jeanne.

Food & drink

Haitian cuisine is built on the foundations of rice with beans and sauce ( diri ak sos pwa ). Add a side order of plantain, some fried or stewed meat and top it off with healthy serve of pikliz (a pickled slaw with chili) to give it a bit of bite. There's plenty of fresh seafood on the coast of course (and Haiti has a lot of coast). For dessert, the choice of fresh tropical fruit can seem endless, although the mangoes are particularly delicious in season. For drinks, Barbancourt rum is smooth to sip and great in cocktails; if you're just after a quick cooler you can do no better than a frosty Prestige beer.

In the last couple of years the international hotel chains have started to see the value of investing in Haiti – Hilton is soon to follow the Best Western and Marriott groups in opening in Port-au-Prince. But for now, most hotels in Haiti are locally run and operated, keeping your tourist dollars circulating in the local economy. Accommodation remains relatively expensive in Haiti compared to the rest of the Caribbean.

Getting there & around

Port-au-Prince is the main gateway into Haiti, with plenty of flights from the USA, but the recent opening of Cap-Haïtien airport to international flights means that arriving in the capital is no longer essential. Haiti is a small country, and an internal flight between these two main cities takes barely 30 minutes. You'll see more by bus, and although public transport had traditionally been something of an endurance test, new bus companies are taking advantage of the improved highway network to offer comfortable and competitive coach routes between the major destinations. Still, once you get off the beaten track, rough local tap-tap buses and pick-ups are often the only option, so be prepared to squeeze in!

It would be remiss to ignore the fact that Haiti carries something of a reputation that might worry the more hesitant traveler. The reality behind the hype is somewhat different. Haiti is far less violent a country than neighboring Dominican Republic or Jamaica, both of which host vibrant tourist industries. We'd advise keeping away from political demonstrations (as you would in many countries), but instead heed the number of adventure- and package-tour operators now returning to the country. Haiti is a country more than ready to welcome tourists looking for the next travel frontier.

Haiti Is the Best Beach Destination You Don't Know About

There are tons of places to surf in Haiti, but start with Pistons. Located in the Bay of Jacmel, the waves here take their shape from the opening of the river mouth and an 80-year-old shipwrecked engine.

"The waves form perfectly here—a clean left-hander," says surfer David Dowd. "I had waves all to myself every day." Though the surf is great, note that there's debris covering the beach—if you're looking for a more pristine setting, head to nearby Kabic beach, 45 miles away.

Stay: Florita

Built in 1888, this hotel exudes old life with the building's architecture and all the glorious art it contains. With its relaxing, flower-drenched pool, art gallery, uniquely charming rooms, and amazing views from the balconies, this place is a gem. Florita is also conveniently located near the center of town, the boardwalk, and the beach, so you're immediately in the action when you walk out the hotel's arched doors and down a block.

Play: The Vatican

This bar, restaurant, and gallery sits on a hilly street called Rue de l'Eglise ( eglise means "church"), hence the name. And when you walk through the cast iron gates, you'll have a "yes Jesus" moment. Everything is carefully curated by the owner: the two-story layout, the cathedral ceilings, and the cool pieces by local artists. Says owner Reginald Turnier, "I wanted Vatican to be a refuge for locals as well as travelers."

Beach (and Eats): Ti-Mouillage

One of the most compelling things about Jacmel is its abundance of untouched beaches. Ti-Mouillage, with its picturesque landscape, has everything one needs for a great experience—beautiful sand, palm trees, and clear blue-green water. That's why it's surprising that it's fairly empty—it's like your own private spot.

After swimming and sunning, enjoy fresh Kreyol seafood dishes like grilled lobster and banan peze (fried plantains) with a cold Prestige, the nation's beer.

Beach: Moulin Sur Mer

Located in Artibonite, about 48 miles from Port-au-Prince, Moulin Sur Mer is also a resort (meaning you have to pay to play). But don't worry—it's only $20 dollars, and you get your money's worth with the view. Palm trees? Check. Hammocks? Check. Beach waiters? Check. Water sports? Check. Piña coladas and other delicious concoctions made with Haitian rum? Check. It doesn't get any better than this.

"Our two main goals when creating Simbi: providing sustainable jobs and clean water," says creative director Lorraine Steed. Located in Montagne Noire, the mountains of Port-au-Prince, the Simbi Studio showcases all the beautifully crafted pieces that are part of a story to help rebuild Haiti.

The clay beads and colorful hair ties are the customer favorites, and rightfully so—when purchased, they provide water and jobs to Haitians. Simbi also has gorgeous apparel and clutches, which you can shop online .

I'm a child of Haitian immigrants, and my mother made sure we were always proud of our rich culture. As I walked the streets of Port-au-Prince and neighboring Pétionville, there was a feeling of optimism. The Tap-Taps (painted buses) zooming by with Kompa music blasting, the laughter of all the children getting out of school, and the vibrant landscapes are enough to make anyone smile.

Shop: Kay Atizan

The explosion of art from this small store is mind-blowing. Kay Atizan, which translates to "the house of the artists" in Kreyol, is stocked with every type of Haitian art. (Warning: you might have trouble making a selection because everything is so breathtaking.) After shopping, take a minute to check out the super-cute cafe on the side—it will not disappoint.

It's very popular with Haitian people due to its relaxing atmosphere, and a lot of great restaurants and stores can be found nearby. Jacmel Beach

Down on the southern shore of Haiti, Jacmel Beach is a super spot for both tourists and locals to hang out and have fun. It's quite a lively beach that used to be the main host of various special events and festivals before the terrible earthquake of 2010 did some damage to the area. Fortunately, Jacmel Beach has managed to rebuild itself in the years that have followed and is making a comeback as one of the most vibrant spots in the country.

Haiti may not come to mind as your stereotypical tourist destination, particularly due to the trouble it has faced in its past, with hurricanes and earthquakes devastating the island. However, this tiny country that shares its border with the Dominican Republic is an absolute hidden gem for culture, architecture, food and, most importantly, beaches.

Haiti’s beaches are some of the best in the Caribbean and exactly what you’d imagine for this part of the world – sugary white sand, sparkling blue water and a host of beautiful offshore reefs and deserted islands to explore. Some beaches in Haiti are privately owned by hotels, while others are public, but all of them combine the best of what the country has to offer.

Labadee Beach is a destination you will get to see if you’re on board one of the many cruise ships passing by Haiti.

Royal Caribbean privately owns the beach and resort, so naturally, this is one of the best beaches on the island.

It has all the soft sand, blue sea and water sports you can ask for.

Aside from relaxing on the sand, there is also a rollercoaster for adrenaline seekers and one of the longest over-water ziplines in the world.

Among the huge range of activities on offer are a giant waterpark, parasailing, jet-skiing, fishing, kayaking and snorkelling – you definitely won’t run out of things to do.

If you prefer to get away from the cruise ship crowds, take a free tender to the nearby, quieter Columbus Cove for the day.

Another stunning and remote island exclusively owned by Royal Caribbean, Amiga Island is located just off the coast of Labadee.

Excursions here are offered from Labadee and include a complimentary drink on arrival.

The island is truly a deserted paradise with plenty of hammocks and deck chairs for you to relax on.

As the island is tiny (you can walk around it in about 10 minutes), there are no shops, so be sure to bring any snorkelling gear or towels you might need.

There is a bar to enjoy some fresh drinks but no toilet on the island, so plan accordingly!

Sitting right up in the north of Haiti, Cadras Beach is a beautiful spot to head to for some tranquillity, with an excellent mountainous backdrop and an endless view of the turquoise ocean.

Cadras is quite a tiny little cove, and at the right time, you’re likely to have it all to yourself.

Snorkelling and swimming are some of the best activities to do here due to the impossibly clear water where you can spot a variety of tropical fish.

You can easily spend the day here, where beach mats, chairs and umbrellas can all be rented, and there are a few local food vendors dotted around the area for when you get hungry.

Kokoye Beach is the kind of beach you dream about, with powdery sand, sparkling ocean and low hanging palm trees lining the beach, swaying in the wind.

It is located near a quiet fishing village, and the best way to get there is to hike for fantastic views on the way; although you can also take a boat.

Snorkelling is a particular highlight at this beach.

If you want to experience some magic, camping here and swimming at night will let you see the famous bioluminescent plankton along the shoreline.

Whether or not you are hiking, plan your trip in advance to be able to order food for lunch and dinner from local vendors.

Cold drinks are available all day long however if you just want to sit back with a cold one.

Gelee Beach is situated near Les Cayes in southern Haiti and is one of the most popular beaches in the country.

Surrounded by flat open countryside, it is an endless stretch of soft sand and the waters are some of the clearest you’ll find.

Swimming and snorkelling are obvious choices here, but the food is what draws people.

Local food shacks line the shore serving sea fresh, local food and drink.

These places come alive with music and locals enjoying a beer together at dinner time.

If you prefer home comforts, bigger hotels and restaurants are only a short drive away.

Anse d’Azur is one of the best beaches in the Jeremie area.

Forming a huge, deep cove, the beach is extremely popular with snorkellers and divers due to the array of underwater caves off the coast and a sunken German U-Boat to explore.

A taxi from the nearest town will only cost you around $4, meaning this is the perfect spot to spend a few hours, but you can still find accommodation and food options a short drive away.

Cormier is a beach resort on the north coast of Haiti, one of the only ones in the area, providing five acres of lush greenery and untouched beaches.

The beach is a bright coral colour, backed by lots of shady trees, and the hotel can help provide you with mats, towels, chairs and umbrellas to while away the day.

Snorkelling and swimming are both on offer, as well as tennis courts and a Caribbean inspired open-air lounge and bar where you can enjoy a freshly mixed drink, some lively music and party the night away.

Wahoo Bay is a beach resort just an hour outside of Port-au-Prince, popular with tourists and locals.

It sits in the area of Carries and it shares its beaches with a few other resorts but is easily the best place to stay.

Aside from serving beachside cocktails and seafood known island-wide as some of the best in Haiti, there are also a whole host of activities such as kayaking, beach volleyball, snorkelling and diving, and fishing expeditions.

Often in summer, there will be a live DJ, which is a hit with the locals.

If partying isn’t your scene, you can also enjoy a relaxing massage at the spa, or visit the nearby quiet coastal town of Anse-a-Pirogue.

A small beachside town, Jacmel is the place to head for an authentic local experience and a few of the best beaches around.

The whole coastline here is beach, but there are three main ones you should visit.

Jacmel beach is shallow and clear, making it an excellent place for families or those just wanting to paddle. It also has the best bars and cafes in the area.

Ti Mouillage is a larger and far quieter nearby beach that has a beachfront restaurant and bungalow. It’s popular with local kids playing football in the surf.

Finally, Raymond-les-Bains beach has spectacular sunsets and super fresh seafood. It’s well-known for its weekend parties and festivals.

Cote des Arcadins sits within a 135-acre (55 ha) stretch of tropical reserve.

With its endless stretch of sand and clear water, there is something on offer for everyone who visits, whether you want to try out some water sports or stay on land and enjoy some beautiful hikes in nature.

The beach is covered in thatched beach umbrellas and mats to keep you cool for the day.

The coastline of Arcadin is home to some of the top Haiti beaches, including Kaliko and Montrouis, which is its central hub and a beach unto itself.

However, there is plenty of beach to go around and several laid-back hotels to stay in where you can take advantage of quieter stretches of beach, boat excursions and fresh local cuisine.

Port Salut is a coastal resort town on the southwest corner of Haiti, famous for being the birthplace of Haiti’s former president.

It is the most popular weekend break destination for locals from Port-au-Prince, and although you will find some tourists here, it hasn’t been developed very much yet.

Many hotels dot the beachfront, but you will have the place to yourself on most days.

The beach at Point Sable is the most loved area and a true postcard-perfect stretch of sugary sand and palm trees.

Although most people come here to kick back in the sun with a chilled rum cocktail, another fun activity is hiking to the nearby Cascade Touyac waterfall, where you can swim in the crystal-clear pools.

If you visit in August, you may catch one of Haiti’s local traditions – the yearly Christian feast celebrating the island’s patron saints.

Abaka Bay is a resort area in the Ile a Vache stretch of coastline, seldom trodden by tourists.

The beach here was voted 57th most beautiful in the world, and its swaying palm trees, beachfront cabanas and warm shallow waters will make you never want to leave.

The resort is the main place to stay in the area and has a monopoly on this stretch of beach, which means it is kept in perfect untouched condition.

Whether you want to sit back in a hammock while someone brings you fresh coconuts or snorkel and spot tropical fish in the clear blue waters, you’ll find it here.

Other activities to enjoy are kayaking, beach volleyball, nature walks and hikes, deep-sea fishing, and cave exploring.

Go horseback riding on the beach for the best sunsets and an authentic Caribbean experience.

Another beach near Jacmel, Chouchou Bay Beach, is one of the country’s most stunning beaches due to the rugged mountain backdrop.

The beach does not have many amenities such as food and drink, so it is good to pack both drinks and snacks if you’re visiting for the day.

It’s a popular spot for snorkelling, fishing, hiking and scuba diving if you’re tired of simply relaxing on the sand.

Chouchou Bay is only a short drive from Cap-Haitien, making it a great spot to check out even for half a day, particularly if you’re an avid diver.

Close to the seaside town of Cotes de Fer in Commune Aquin, Grann Do beach is the full package.

Encompassing panoramic views, white sand and blue waters, and a mountain backdrop and nearby rivers, you won’t be running out of places to explore.

It features a beachfront gazebo for visitors to eat and socialise in and a stage where locals frequently put on live music and performances.

There are many food options, and the beach’s owners have been working hard to attract local talent and turn it into a lively local hub for parties, dancing, and fun.

A pretty pink-tinged beach located in La Gonave, Anse a Raisins, has extremely flat and clear waters, making it ideal for exploring the plentiful coral reefs just offshore.

The beach itself is pretty deserted, sheltered by lots of palm trees, and you will probably only spot a few locals due to it being slightly remote.

The best way of seeing the area is through a boat trip, of which many are offered by local companies, where you will get to visit the crystal waters for a few hours and relax on the beach.

These tours will usually provide drinks and food included, which is ideal on this secluded stretch of the island.

Ile des Arcadins is a tiny remote island off Haiti’s coast, just off the previously mentioned Cote des Arcadins, a national park.

Getting here can usually be arranged by boat tour, where you’ll get to spend the day enjoying the spectacular reefs that surround this island.

You’ll be able to see a variety of coral and tropical fish, and if you’re lucky, you might also spot some playful dolphins in the waves.

Again, since this island is remote and uninhabited, there are no food and drink options available, which is why boat trips will provide some great local food and fresh drinks for you including Haiti’s famous rum punch!

The trendy Kaliko Beach Club resort owns Kaliko Beach.

Aside from its lovely pools, the beach club provides exclusive access to this beautifully peaceful beach and provides a wealth of activities for enjoying the water.

This is ideal for relaxing and enjoying some Caribbean fun, from jetskiing to flyboarding, scuba diving and snorkelling.

They also have fresh gourmet dining and a poolside bar where you can have a sundowner while watching a breathtaking sunset.

If you’d rather stay elsewhere and just want to visit for the day, it is only 55 minutes from Port au Prince and you can get a day pass, which includes access to the beach, restaurant and bar.

Montrouis is a popular stopping point en route to other Arcadins resorts such as Kaliko, however, it is worth spending time here as there is a lot on offer.

It is the country’s main hub for seafood exports, and the waters are teeming with marine life, making it popular with visitors for leisure fishing.

This also makes it an excellent spot for snorkelling and diving, and there are a few different dive companies that can take both beginners and pros out on some spectacular dives.

If you have some time and want to do something active, hiking to the hidden gem of Kay Piat is highly recommended.

It’s a lush spot in the nearby mountains surrounded by jungle and has crystal-clear pools for swimming.

Moulin sur Mer is a private beach resort that was once an 18th-century sugar plantation.

The beach here has a jetty where you can go out on numerous fishing and boat trips to outlying islands.

Snorkelling and diving are also on the cards, along with jet-skiing, paddle-boarding and sunset cruises.

The hotel itself has bars and restaurants right on the beach.

If you feel the need to escape the beach, you can get a guide to take you on a walking or hiking tour before coming back and strolling in the shady gardens, playing a game of volleyball or ping pong, or simply sitting under a beach umbrella with a drink.

Ouanga Bay sits slightly northwest of Port au Prince and is a small sandy beach that isn’t often visited by day-trippers, which means you’ll have a stretch to yourself.

There is however one main hotel here, the Ouanga Bay Hotel which dominates most of the beach, providing loungers and umbrellas for guests and visitors.

This is where you can also book activities such as snorkelling, windsurfing, pedalos and glass-bottomed boat trips.

The resort can also arrange diving excursions, and after an exhausting day of sun and sand, the over-water restaurant is the best place in the area to taste the locally caught seafood.

Uncover Haiti’s almost unknown beaches far away from the overcrowded tourist hotspots. These are the top nine beaches that only the locals know about.

In the heart of the Caribbean, located between Cuba and the Dominican Republic, Haiti is home to some of the region's most beautiful beaches. We've scoured the coastline to find the best hidden pockets of paradise, with fine, warm sands, crystal-clear waters, and shading palm trees. Best of all, these beaches are far away from the overcrowded tourist hotspots.

From the secluded cove of Anse D'azur to the vast sandy stretches at Chouchou Bay, here are the most glorious beaches in Haiti that remain undiscovered by most travelers.

1. Anse d'Azur

Located on Haiti’s southern peninsula in the department of Grand'Anse lies the charming city of Jérémie. Known for its talented poets and local delicacies, such as konparet and tonm tonm, the city is also home to a picturesque beach tucked away from the world, known only to the locals. Anse D'azur offers 80 meters of perfect golden sand protected by the rocky coast in a crescent-shaped bay. Take a dip in the warm waters, and if you’re looking for adventure, snorkel or dive to explore the nearby shipwreck and caves.

Anse D'Azur is a short 15-minute drive from Jérémie's city center. Just follow the coastal road towards the airport, and you’ll find it on the outskirts of the city limits, where the last few houses meet the wild tropical forest.

2. Anse Baguette

Imagine a beach so secluded that just getting there is an adventure. Welcome to Anse Baguette. Tucked away on a peninsula that juts out to form the Bay of Jacmel, this lesser-known Haitian beach is a perfect retreat for unwinding. If you're in the mood for some exploration, the nearby ruins of the old French Fort Baguette and a hidden waterfall, just an hour's hike away, await your discovery. Keep in mind, the beach’s remote location means bringing your own water and snacks is a must. If lunch plans slip your mind, you might be in luck – local fishermen are often happy to serve up freshly prepared poisson gros sel.

There are no roads leading to this isolated peninsula, so your journey to Anse Baguette will begin with a motorboat ride from the shores of Jacmel. This boat ride, lasting about 30 minutes, offers a chance to enjoy the gorgeous coastline along the way.

3. Ti Mouillage

This serene and often overlooked beach in Haiti’s South East department is just a 30-minute drive east of Jacmel. On your way there, you might want to make a stop at the popular and always busy Raymond Les Bains beach, a great spot for lunch. But if solitude is what you seek, continue further to Cayes-Jacmel, where Ti Mouillage awaits. This beach is usually quiet, except for the occasional local who’ll offer you coconuts, freshly opened with his machete.

Ti Mouillage isn’t just about relaxation; it’s also a fantastic destination for beginner surfers. With Surf Haiti nearby, you can easily rent boards or take surfing lessons, making it an ideal spot for those looking to ride their first waves.

4. Malfini Beach

If you ever find yourself in Cap-Haïtien and craving some quality beach time, Malfini Beach is your go-to destination. This small cove is stunningly beautiful, a perfect escape from the noise of the city. The crystal-clear waters are ideal for snorkeling, offering a glimpse into the coral reefs, or you can simply choose to relax on the sandy shores, shaded by trees. Kayaking enthusiasts will also find Malfini Beach to be an excellent spot for their water adventures.

To get there, prepare for a short 20-minute boat ride from Labadee. It's best to dress in shorts or swimwear, as you'll need to wade through thigh-deep water from the boat to reach this idyllic beach.

Cadras beach near Cap-Haïtien

Hidden at the bottom of a deep v-shaped cove, guarded on each side by jungle-covered mountain ridges that seemingly slide into the ocean, Cadras boasts turquoise waters that look straight out of a Hollywood movie. The small beach, only around 40 meters long, is an oasis of tranquility, with few tourists around to disturb the peace.

To reach Cadras from Cap-Haïtien, take a taxi or public transportation like a taptap or moto towards Cormier and continue to the end of the road in Labadee. From there, take one of the small taxi boats waiting in the harbor for a 20-minute ride to Cadras. Remember to negotiate the price with the boat captain before boarding.

6. Chouchou Bay

Chouchou Bay, situated further down the northern coast from Cap-Haïtien, offers a spectacular stretch of golden, powdery sand that seamlessly blends land, sky, and sea. This expansive beach promises a serene retreat, but reaching it can be somewhat iffy. Expect a full-day trip, with about two hours of travel each way, as the roads leading there are not in the best condition. Located near the city of Port-Margot, Chouchou Bay is not just a beach but a gateway to explore nearby natural wonders.

One such attraction is Bassin Waka, between the Morne Zombi and Morne Bak mountains. Though challenging to access, the journey to this inland lagoon is absolutely worth it. Imagine ending a vigorous hike by plunging into the cool, refreshing waters of Bassin Waka. This spot isn’t just a natural paradise; it holds cultural significance too. Known as a site for vodou ceremonies and pilgrimages , locals believe the waters here have healing properties.

7. Anse Blanche

Picture yourself on a white-sand beach, surrounded by nothing but nature in its purest form. Anse Blanche, situated on the uninhabited island of Petite Cayemite, offers just that - a pristine cove with only the sound of the ocean waves and birdsong to keep you company.

To get there, you’ll have to take a 15-minute boat ride from the nearby village of Pestel and remember to bring your own supplies. Leave nothing behind but your footprints on the sand.

8. Kokoye Beach

Accessible only by boat or a challenging 2-3 hour hike, Kokoye is a secluded beach paradise on a remote peninsula south of Petit-Goâve. Surrounded by rocky outcrops and tranquil waters the top drawcards here are paddle boarding, snorkeling, swimming and a unique glamping experience.

With no nearby electricity, the beach transforms into a stargazer's paradise at night. Visitors can enjoy sea-to-table meals, with fresh, locally sourced seafood, and explore nearby attractions like sea caves and historical ruins​

Amani-y Beach in Saint-Marc

9. Amani-y Beach

Among Haiti's lesser-known coastal treasures, Amani-y Beach in Saint-Marc stands out as a peaceful alternative. A short 30 minute drive from the popular Royal Decameron Beach, it's perfect for those who favor quiet shores over crowded spots.

Be prepared for a bit of an adventure getting there, as the final stretch of the road requires a four-wheel drive. It's a bring-your-own-supplies kind of place, so pack plenty of water and whatever else you might need for a day at this almost unknown beach.

Haiti: beautiful beaches, mountaintop fortresses, unspoilt nature and voodoo

Haiti occupies around a third of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean, sharing it with the prosperous Dominican Republic. Earthquakes, ruthless dictators, death squads and zombies are just some of the reasons that the country hasn’t quite made it onto the tourist map.

As a result it retains a unique culture, almost a different continent, with a glorious coastline, the largest fortress in the Americas and the vibrant capital of Port au Prince, completely recovered from the 2010 earthquake.

For me that was enough reason to visit.

Ouanaminthe

I leave Dajabón in the Dominican Republic and cross the Massacre River to Ouanaminthe in Haiti, on the other side. It’s chaotic as it’s market day here – Haitians grabbing a bargain on the DR side, queues of ramshackle pickups piled high with sacks of rice, chickens and chairs on the bridge. I keep my hand on my wallet and hang on to my belongings. Fortunately I have a guide who helps me with the formalities and smooths my crossing.

Compared to the Dominican Republic, it’s like going back in time. The 90-minute drive North West passes through flatlands, populated by sparse shrub, with bags of charcoal by the side of the road. I can’t believe the number of makeshift wooden shacks running their own private lotteries, and there are certainly more of them than the small stalls selling baskets of fruit.

Cap-Haitien

I’m soon by the sea in Cap-Haitien, originally Cap-Francais, and the second largest city in Haiti. Apart from the plastic garbage littering the beach, it’s an attractive place, stuffed with colourful late 19th century buildings, all balconies and tall shuttered doors in the colonial style. Motorbike taxis ply the narrow streets and kids, in their impressive starched uniforms, are just leaving school.

The Place d’Armes, the main square, has the Cathédrale Notre Dame on one side and the Hotel de Ville on the other. The Roi Christophe University is in one corner and students are eating their lunch, under the statue of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the hero of the Haitian Revolution. There’s also a memorial to the slave leaders who were executed by the French here in the 18th century.

As I take the coast road out of town, alongside a deeply turquoise sea, I reflect that this has the potential to be one of the world’s great destinations. Security is still a potential problem and the beach needs a clean but it’s a beautiful spot. Cormier Plage , an attractive seafront hotel, has belonged to the same French family for a couple of generations and it makes a good base to explore further.

Next day, I set out for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Royal Palace and Citadelle in Milot, around 30km inland. We climb gradually through lush tropical vegetation, on a narrow road which abruptly comes to an end. In front of me are the impressive ruins of the San-Souci Palace, destroyed by an earthquake in 1842.

Henri Christophe, King of North Haiti, built this palace between 1810 and 1813 and it was designed to impress. He wanted to show foreigners that black people were as civilised as whites. It all ended badly, as the King committed suicide in 1820, after suffering a stroke, with his enemies approaching. The palace lay empty until the 1842 earthquake finished it off.

A grand staircase, once flanked by bronze lions, leads inside, and there are a series of banqueting halls, private apartments and even a throne room. Unfortunately the walls have been reduced to bare brick and it’s impossible to tell what was what. The grounds once contained extensive gardens with a large pool and the hospital is now a school. The adjacent church, where Henri was crowned, survived the earthquake, although the dome has had to be rebuilt. It’s one of the oldest in the country, dating from 1804.

Henri’s greatest achievement, though is his Citadelle, perched on top of the mountain and inaccessible by car. There are horses for hire but I choose to walk the mile uphill and enjoy the stunning views. The fortress is hidden for most of the way, until suddenly the fortress walls, rising 40m from the rock, rise up in front of you. It took 20,000 workers 15 years to build and was part of a chain of fortifications to protect the newly independent Haiti from the French.

Apparently, it’s the largest fortress in the Americas but was never tested in battle. Originally it was fitted with 355 cannons, stolen from the French, and over 150 still remain, along with 50,000 cannon balls. It’s the world’s largest collection of 18th century cannons and includes some British cannons, marked with the crest of the Duke of Marlborough.

You enter through a drawbridge into a network of large cisterns and storehouses, designed to provide a year’s food and water for 5000 soldiers. There are palace quarters for the king and his family and of course extensive dungeons. It covers a vast area of 10,000 square metres and King Henri is buried here. Unlike his palace, it was completely undamaged by the earthquake of 1842.

From Cap-Haitien I take a short flight to the capital Port au Prince or PAP, as it’s known locally. The city was almost flattened by the devastating 2010 earthquake but I’m surprised to see little evidence. Of course the Presidential Palace collapsed, now inaccessible behind boarded up walls, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption is in ruins, but otherwise rebuilding has been relatively swift.

The Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien lies safely underground beneath pretty sculpture gardens in the centre of town. It features key figures from the struggle for independence and tells the history of the country. Exhibits include the rusting anchor of Columbus’ flagship, the Santa María, the silver pistol with which Henri Christophe took his own life and ‘Papa Doc’ Duvalier’s trademark black hat and cane. Opposite is Aristide’s Bicentennial Tower, standing proud, although nobody can understand what it’s for.

The liveliest part of town is around the Marché en Fer, two red iron-framed structures that were originally destined for a railway station in Cairo, but came to Haiti in 1891. One market hall is for produce whereas the other is an Aladdin’s cave of voodoo paraphernalia, artisan sculptures, masks and paintings. The streets around are packed with stalls, spilling over the pavements, selling everything imaginable.

The residential areas of Pacot and Bois Verna contain the few 19th century gingerbread houses that survived the earthquake. Brick-filled timber frames hosting graceful balconies adorned with lacy wooden latticework, define a lost era. Many of them are in an advanced state of decay, as these days the rich consider this part of town too dangerous. Perhaps the most famous example of this style is the Oloffson Hotel, near the centre, which featured in Graham Greene’s The Comedians.

After a couple of days in Port au Prince, I need some fresh air so climb 10km south east into the foothills of the Chaîne de la Selle mountain range. It’s great to escape the traffic of the capital and I’m going to Kenscoff to meet Jane Wynne. Her father founded a farm here in 1956, propagating indigenous species to help conserve Haiti’s rich biodiversity.

She’s still focusing on conservation and these days the Wynne Farm Ecological Park offers environmental education to locals, as well as horse riding and yoga classes. I settle for a guided tour around the site’s 30 acres, learning about the native plants and taking in the fantastic views. Looking out into this lush countryside I can see that it’s something that’s definitely worth preserving.

Royal Caribbean cancels visits to Labadee in Haiti amid continued violence

Royal Caribbean International has suspended stops at private destination Labadee in Haiti through the summer amid continued violence in the country.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority,” a spokesperson for the cruise line said in an emailed statement. “Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution we have suspended all visits to Labadee fleetwide through September 2024.”

Royal Caribbean plans to “continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed” and will notify guests of any updates, the spokesperson added.

The line previously suspended numerous planned calls to Labadee following fresh gang violence that prompted the country to declare a state of emergency in early March.

Greece Announces New Plan to Protect Some of Its Pristine Beaches

The government has pledged to crack down on rapid development, and on seaside businesses seeking to take advantage of a tourist boom. But some residents and conservationists are unimpressed.

The Greek government on Friday published a list of 198 “untrodden beaches” that it said are now off limits to bars, restaurants and large public gatherings in its latest attempt to contain development and address the backlash to the throngs of tourists that descend on the country’s coastlines each year.

The move comes amid growing frustration among residents of Greek islands and parts of the coastal mainland that are popular with foreign visitors. Protests ballooned into a nationwide “beach towel movement” last summer as disgruntled locals complained that they were being pushed off their own beaches by businesses seeking to take advantage of a tourist boom that brought more than 32 million foreign visitors to Greece last year .

On the country’s Cycladic islands, local residents joined forces with the authorities to push back against a wave of construction .

Greece’s conservative government has pledged to crack down on the development, and on seaside businesses that violate regulations. In February it passed a law aimed at regulating the use of the country’s coastline, imposing penalties of up to 60,000 euros for businesses occupying more than 50 percent of Greek beaches with umbrellas and sun beds.

Critics said the law did not go far enough to curb the problem, with some claiming that the government was perpetuating the issue by not tackling illegal land use more comprehensively.

The list of “untrodden beaches,” unveiled in a joint agreement between Greece’s finance and environment ministers, is part of a broader effort to restore balance, the government said. “The main goal is to combine environmental protection with sustainable development,” Kostis Hatzidakis, the economy and finance minister, said on Friday.

“The environment is a valuable component of the Greek tourist product,” he said.

Under the new initiative, the government was putting public assets “under a strict framework of rules, penalties and obligations,” Mr. Hatzidakis said. Inspections and transparency would be increased, as would “the enforcement of the law,” he added.

The beaches on the list are in areas included in the European Union’s Natura program, a network of vulnerable habitats across Europe that are protected under European law. Among the beaches listed on Friday are spots on popular islands such as Milos, Naxos, Lesbos, Samothrace and in the southern Peloponnese peninsula.

The islands were selected based on the advice of the country’s Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency and are all “areas of high ecological importance,” Theodoros Skylakakis, the environment and energy minister, said on Friday.

Under the new initiative, no section of those beaches can be auctioned off for commercial use, and the presence of sun-loungers and umbrellas will be prohibited, as will the organization of public events involving more than 10 people.

Another initiative being introduced by the government is a new app called “MyCoast,” on which people can report violations.

Some environmentalists in Greece were not impressed by Friday’s announcement. Eleni Andrianopoulou, a resident of Naxos and a member of a local “Save the beaches” group, said the government’s original plan had been for more than 1,000 beaches nationwide to be covered, adding that Natura areas require “real protection.”

“From the beginning we had stressed that this reform for untrodden beaches was a fraud.”

Demetre Karavellas, director of the World Wildlife Fund Greece, said the authorities were jumping the gun with their list of pristine beaches, noting that there are more than 100 marine and coastal areas in Greece that are recognized by the Natura program but have yet to be effectively managed or conserved.

“The government should start by complying with its basic legal obligations before creating new vague categories of protection,” he said.
