You might be surprised to find a delightful 18th century windmill in Roscommon, but Elphin Windmill was originally used to grind wheat and barley before falling into disrepair in the early 19th century. The local community restored in it the 1990s and it’s now a working windmill with a visitor centre that explains how the windmill works. It’s also an obvious spot for an Instagram pic if you’re in the area.

This impressive 13th century Roscommon Castle was once one of the most important royal castles in Ireland and it still makes for an incredible sight. It changed hands multiple times between warring Irish and English forces before Cromwellian troops destroyed its fortifications in 1652 and a fire in 1690 saw it fall into ruin. If you’re exploring the castle, you’ll notice its unusual symmetrical design and other surviving features like its cross-shaped arrow loops.

The spectacular Suck Valley Way is a 105km loop walk that forms part of the famous 500km Breifne Beara Way , which immortalises the flight of Donal Cam O’Sullivan-Beare and his followers from Cork to Leitrim. Wondering what are the best things to do in Roscommon, Ireland ? Well, if you are planning a visit to this county of Ireland, you’ll love my list of the best things to do in County Roscommon where I share my local’s knowledge of some of the things worth doing while there.

A county in the western region of the Emerald Isle that is not often visited by those who come to Ireland is Roscommon. If you’ve never visited County Roscommon or are wondering if it is even worth going there, this post about some of the top things to do will help you decide on your itinerary for your visit.

County Roscommon is not the smallest of counties by size, but in terms of population, it is pretty small. Lying in the western region of the island, and often included in maps in the midlands of Ireland, Roscommon is a county that gets overlooked but shouldn’t be.

Many people pass through the county on the way to Mayo and Galway, but you should really consider stopping and exploring the county before continuing west.

Best things to do in Roscommon, Ireland

If you are wondering whether this county on the Emerald Isle is worth visiting, I will help you by sharing 9 of the best things to do in Roscommon, so you can decide whether to add them to your itinerary for your next trip around Ireland.

Roscommon Town

The county town is Roscommon Town and there are a few things to do in Roscommon Town for those who take the time to stop and visit.

Firstly, with local businesses and a small but stately centre, Roscommon Town is a great place to stretch your legs and wander, even if you are only stopping while en-route to another part of the country. Admire the former courthouse (now a bank) and the façade of the old jail before popping somewhere for a cuppa.

If you plan to spend some more time in the town, start by visiting Roscommon Castle (pictured). Located in a field at the north end of the town are the ruins of the Norman Castle. Built in the 13 th century, the castle was destroyed by Irish forces and experienced a turbulent time until it was surrendered to Cromwell’s forces in the mid-16 th century. The castle ruins can be explored before enjoying the new town park beside it.

If you enjoy history, then don’t miss the Roscommon County Museum, located in a former Presbyterian church. Visitors can learn about the history of the town and county through displays of unique artefacts. These include an inscribed 9 th -century slab from a monastery and a collection of old, horse-drawn farm machinery in the yard behind the museum.

And it is also worth visiting the remains of the Dominican friary in the town, hidden behind a school. Admire the unusual 15 th -century carvings of eight mercenary soldiers wielding swords and an axe.

A picture of some of the ruins of Roscommon Castle

Strokestown House & the Famine Museum

20km north of the county town is Strokestown, Roscommon. This town is famous for the Palladian mansion built in the early 18 th century which incorporated an earlier 17 th -century tower house. Strokestown House and Park is one of the top tourist attractions in Roscommon.

As well as the mansion where visitors can join guided tours to marvel at the original furnishings and fabrics, there are re-created pleasure gardens, and fruit and vegetable gardens for visitors to get a glimpse into what it may have looked like in its heyday. The gardens and woodland, although a lot smaller than they used to be, are a great place to explore after visiting the house.

In the stable yards of Strokestown Park, you will find the National Famine Museum . This museum tells the story of one of the most tragic periods in Irish history through letters and archives from the house during the era. It reveals an emotional and vivid insight into the harsh reality both the mansion owner and workers experienced during the Great Famine.

A picture of a lake in the grounds of Strokestown House and Park

If you enjoy the outdoors and are looking for places to go in Roscommon, there are a few ideas in this section.

Lough Key Forest and Activity Park is an 800-hectare park on the southern shore of Lough Key that was once part of the Rockingham Estate owned by the King family. The Forest Park has a number of attractions visitors can enjoy including an Icehouse, Gazebo, Wishing Chair, Fairy Bridge, and more.

There are also lots of other activities such as Boda Borg (an adventure house), a high-wire course, Segway and Bike Trails, and more. You could also enjoy a woodland safari or boat tour on the lake, and there is a lakeside café and caravan park should you be looking for refreshments or somewhere to stay close by. Find out more here .

Other things to see in Roscommon involving nature include the Suck Valley Way. This is a 75km walking trail along the River Suck which takes in both the Roscommon County Museum and Strokestown Park House along the way. You can cycling, walk, kayak, or horse-ride your way along sections of the trail. You can pick up a map from the visitor centre in Athleague, or visit the website for more information.

The Shannon River Adventure Centre, in Roosky, is another way to enjoy the outdoors in County Roscommon. History, Castle & Abbeys

There are a number of places to see in Roscommon if you enjoy history. As well as the castle in Roscommon Town already mentioned, there are a few other castles in Roscommon to visit.

One of the main ones is Cloontykilla Castle, located on the edge of Lough Key. This was a ruined castle that was bought in the 2000s to be restored to a 5-star luxury retreat. Although it is privately owned and still being completed, you can view part of it from the perimeter. Once it is complete it will be an amazing place to visit, or even stay.

Ballintubber Castle was built in the 13 th century and was the home of the O’Connor clan. It remained in the family until it fell to Cromwellian forces after which time it became ruined. You can still visit the ruins and imagine what it must have been like back in the day.

Other castles to visit in the county include Donamon Castle near Roscommon Town, and Rindoon and St John’s Castle at Rindoon.

As mentioned, Roscommon has plenty of historical places to visit, and another to add to your list is Clonalis House. The house was constructed in the late 19 th century by a descendant of the O’Connor family as a replacement for an earlier house which was the ancestral home of the clan. It has had a turbulent history but is now a guesthouse that offers tours of this historical house. Find out more here .

King House is a restored Georgian mansion in Boyle, Co Roscommon. It is a visitor centre that tells the tale of the King family and also displays

important cultural collections and Irish history exhibitions.

Visitors can enjoy tours of the house while discovering 400 years of Irish history. The Courtyard houses the town’s library, there are tearooms and a craft shop, and the Úna Bhán Tour ism Co-operative provides both guided and self-guided walking tours from there. Discover more about King House here .

Also in Boyle, Roscommon, you will find a beautiful, well-preserved abbey to visit. Boyle Abbey (pictured) was founded in the 12 th -century and survived the 16 th -century suppression of the monasteries before being turned into a castle in the mid-17 th century. Visitors can visit the cloisters, kitchens, cellars, and church while marvelling at the medieval architecture, including the Roman and Gothic arches in the church nave. Find out more here .

If you are looking to see remnants of ancient Ireland, there are two great examples in County Roscommon. The first is the Drumanone Dolmen at Tinacarra. Visible from the lane that leads to it, this megalithic portal tomb is estimated to have been built sometime between 3000 and 2000 BC. If you are going to be in Boyle, take 20 minutes to visit this monument.

The other ancient monument to see in Roscommon is the Castlestrange Scribed Stone. Located near Athleague, it is on the grounds of Castlestrange House and is a granite boulder decorated with flowing spirals in the La Tène style from the Iron Age (300 BC to 100 AD). It is only one of four such stones across Ireland so worth going to see if you are spending time in Roscommon.

Arigna Miners Way & Historical Way

If the weather isn’t great and you are wondering what to do in Roscommon, then heading underground might be the answer. The Arigna Mining Experience is a unique place to visit in the county and also one of the best things to do with kids in Roscommon.

Visitors can get an insight into the industry that sustained the area for generations, even through the Famine years.

As well as discovering 400 years of mining history, ex-miners take you on a journey through what was their way of life. An exhibition of photographs, documents, and mining equipment is on display above ground, and underground you will be taken on a tour by an ex-miner to discover what lies beneath the surface and hear tales of the miners who knew the tunnels like the back of their hands.

The Arigna Mining Experience is a must if you are visiting County Roscommon and looking for something to do. Find out more and book your tickets here .

Elphin Windmill

One of the top places to visit in Roscommon is the fully restored 18 th -century Elphin Windmill. Dating from around 1730, this is one of the oldest operational windmills in Ireland. It provided corn meal for local people and milling flax.

The windmill is a three-stage structure with a rotating thatched roof. There are four wooden sails, and they are positioned into the direction of the wind by way of a pole which is attached to a cart on the ground. Restored in the 1990’s it opened to the public and has been a popular Roscommon tourist attraction ever since.

Visitors can see the workings of the windmill, watch demonstrations and view the agricultural machinery museum on-site. More information can be found here .

Rathcroghan

Located at Tulsk is one of the best things to do in County Roscommon. Rathcroghan is a complex of archaeological sites identified as the site of Cruachan, the traditional capital of the Connacht, the prehistoric and early historic rulers of the western territory of Ireland.

It is one of four major Royal Sites of Ireland and the legendary Queen Maeve is said to have had her palace there. The various mounds and monuments date from as far back as 4000 BC.

Visitors can step back in time in the museum and interactive centre to learn how the Iron Age and Medieval Irish lived, dressed, and what they believed in. Self-guided tours can be taken with the help of the guidebook, or you can opt to join an informative guided tour of the site. Go on, stay a while with The Rossies! From ancient sites to famine museums, Roscommon is full of important reminders of Ireland’s history.

From ancient sites to famine museums, Roscommon is full of important reminders of Ireland’s history and fascinating tourist attractions.

The name Roscommon comes from the Irish 'Ros' meaning a wooded, gentle height and 'Coman', the name of the county's famous saint and the first bishop of the see, Coman mac Faelchon, who built a monastery in Roscommon in the fifth century.

Roscommon was officially established in 1585, when the Tudors reinstated the land division of Connacht.

Though Roscommon is a midlands county, it is outlined by water, with Lough Key in the North, the River Shannon and Lough Ree to the East, the River Suck to the West.

The Rossies would love you to stay a while! Here are our top five tourist picks for County Roscommon .

Rathcroghan Royal Site

Legend has it that Rathcroghan, near Tulsk, was the seat of Queen Medb (Maeve), the Kings of Connacht, and later, home to the High Kings of Ireland. It is one of the six ancient royal sites of Ireland. The monuments that still stand today range from the Neolithic to Medieval eras, and include burial mounds, ringforts and medieval field boundaries.

Oweynagat, ‘Cave of Cats,’ also in Rathcroghan, is said to be the home of   The Morrigan, the Irish Goddess of War and Fertility, Birth and Death. According to Irish mythology, the cave is a portal to the Otherworld, and every Samhain, The Morrigan, keeper of the Otherword, leaves the gates unguarded.

Strokestown Park National Irish Famine Museum

Strokestown Park House and Famine Museum  is an award-winning museum dedicated to telling the story of the great Irish Famine, and it contains some of the most extensive records from the time of the Famine. The Georgian Palladian mansion was the home of the Packenham Mahon family. On November 2, 1847 the patriarch of the family and landlord of the surrounding estate, Major Denis Mahon, was assassinated by several local men in an incident that became infamous across Ireland and Britain at the time. The killing was motivated by the removal of starving tenant farmers from the estate lands during the Irish Great Hunger of 1845.

The Irish National Famine Museum was established at Strokestown Park in 1994 using original documents which came to light when the house was being restored. The museum has a strong educational focus and seeks to create a greater awareness of the horrors of contemporary famine by demonstrating the link between the causes of the Great Irish Famine of the 1840′s and the ongoing spectacle of famine in the developing world today.

The nearly 2,000 acre park, which was once part of the Rockingham Estate and opened to the public in 1972, sits on the banks of Lough Key. The park has a visitor center with a restaurant and a number of nature trails and walks including a tree canopy walk. Other attractions include an ice house, a gazebo, a ruined church, stables, tunnels, the bog gardens, a wishing chair, a fairy bridge, Drummans Bridge and a deer paddock.

Boyle Abbey

The impressive Boyle Abbey ruins are what remain of a Cistercian Monastery founded in the 12th century. Completed circa 1220, it took sixty years to build. The abbey sustained damage when it was used as barracks by the Elizabethans in 1592, and the   Cromwellians  who besieged it in 1645. Today, the abbey is a national monument. A restored gatehouse of 16th/17th century houses an exhibition.

Places to visit in Roscommon

Here are some specific places to visit when you are in Roscommon

Arigna Mining Experience

Experience what coal mining was like from the 1700s until the mines closed in 1990 with the Arigna Mining Experience. Over the centuries, coal mining provided much needed work in a region of poor agricultural land, particularly helping the Arigna community through the horrors of the famine years between 1845 and 1852.

The development was created after the mines closed, largely thanks to the local community who raised €250,00 towards the project, which opened in April 2003.

Strokestown Park House and Famine Museum

Strokestown Park House is a restored 18th century mansion which retains its original furnishings and offers guided tours through the stately surroundings. The four-acre walled garden has also been restored. The house is built on the site of the 16th-century castle home of the O Conor-Roe Gaelic Chieftains.

At the end of the war in 1641, the spoils of war were divided among the English and Scots. However, at the Restoration, the family of O'Conor Don regained part of its property on the western side of the county, and has ever since kept possession of it, the only family in Country Roscommon which has possessions it had held prior to the arrival of the English.

The Famine Museum

An archive of original documents came to light during the restoration of Strokestown Park House, from the time of the landlord Major Denis Mahon, who was assassinated in November 1847 at the height of the Great Famine of Ireland. This led to the founding of the National Famine Museum, established at Strokestown Park in 1994.

The museum uses original documents and images from the Strokestown Park collection to explain the circumstances of the Great Irish Famine of the 1840s, including actual letters written by the tenants on the Strokestown Estate at the time.

Elphin Windmill

The Elphin windmill was built in the 1730s to harness the winds sweeping the plains of Boyle. A ruin by 1837, the windmill was renovated and reopened to the public in 1996, the only fully restored windmill in the west of Ireland. It has a thatched revolving roof and sails that are turned into the wind using cartwheels on a circular track.

Boyle Abbey

Boyle Abbey was founded in the 12th century under the patronage of the local ruling family, the MacDermotts. Today, while only small parts of the cloister remain, thanks to the Elizabethans converting it into barracks in 1592 and then being besieged by Cromwellians in 1645, the abbey continues to be an excellent example of Ireland’s early Cistercian foundations. There are guided tours daily and a visitor centre exhibits more information in a restored gatehouse on the property.

Roscommon Friary

Roscommon Friary was founded for the Dominicans by the King of Connacht Felim O’Conor, destroyed by fire but rebuilt in 1453, with the surviving remains belonging to this period. The most remarkable feature of the Friary is the effigy of King Felim O’Conor in a niche in the north wall near where the altar stood.

The effigy, carved between 1290 and 1300, has been placed upon a later 15th century tomb with 8 mail-clad warriors in niches with angels above them. The monks left after 1698, but stayed in nearby villages until around the 1850s.

Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum

The award-winning Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum in Athlone , County Roscommon, is a privately owned museum where you can see more than 4,000 items dealing with history, heritage and folk culture. The collection also deals with farm and folk life in Ireland from the 18th Century to the more recent past.

King House Historic and Cultural Centre

King House is a beautifully restored Georgian mansion in Boyle built in 1730 for the King family before becoming a barracks. Jail cells in the basement can still be visited.

At the end of the Civil war in 1923, the barracks passed into the control of the newly-formed Irish Free State Army. In the late 1980s it was restored to its former Georgian style and is now open to the public as a museum with interactive displays and activities bring the past to life.

King House includes the Connaught Rangers museum as well as the Boyle Civic Art Collection. The house also hosts events, including elements of the Boyle Arts Festival.

Roscommon Castle

Roscommon Castle is undoubtedly one of the most important castles in Ireland. The first fortification here was built in around 1269 under the justiciar, Robert d’Ufford. This early castle was attacked numerous times before being wholly destroyed by Aedh mac Felim Ó Conchobair. The castle was then rebuilt as a royal castle between 1275–1285, at a substantial cost at the time of £3,500.

The castle was built with four large D-shaped towers at each corner, and a twin-towered gatehouse in its eastern wall. The design of the castle is highly important. Professor Tadhg O’Keeffe of UCD believes that Roscommon Castle served as the prototype of the famous castles like Beaumaris and Harlech, built by King Edward I in Wales (you can hear Tadhg discuss this in Episode 4 of the Amplify Archaeology Podcast ). As well as the strong stone walls the castle was defended by deep ditches and the waters of the lake. The positioning and design of the towers was of key importance, as they were laid out in order to provide maximum flanking fire against any attacking force.

History of Roscommon Castle

houses to visit in roscommon

An interior view of the castle ruins • Roscommon

The location of Roscommon Castle was both strategic and symbolic. Connacht was one of the last Irish kingdoms to fall under Anglo-Norman rule after their invasions of the late 12th century. The powerful Ó Conchobair (O’Conor) kings had fought, and politically manoeuvred, with the invaders in the decades following the invasions. By the 1260s, the Anglo-Normans were locked into a deadly conflict with Aedh, son of Felim Ó Conchobair, the last King of Connacht. One of the traditional Ó Conchobair power bases was a crannóg here, on  Loch na nÉan  (Loughnaneane or Lough Nea) that translates to ‘the lake of the birds’. This was a place steeped in myth and legend. A key character in the famous epic  Táin Bó Cúailgne,  Fergus Mac Róich, King of Ulster, is said to have been buried on the shores of the lake. It was also said to be an entry point to the Otherworld.  The decision to site an Anglo-Norman royal castle in this storied landscape, right next to the ancestral home of the Ó Conchobairs was a highly symbolic act indeed.

However, less than a century after it was completed, the O’Conors took possession of Roscommon castle in 1340 and held it for nearly two hundred years. However, in 1569, the castle was surrendered to the English. It was later granted to Sir Nicholas Malby in 1578, who spent a vast sum of money modernising the castle to make it fit for a member of the Tudor elite. You can see evidence for this process of modernisation in the large rectangular windows, particularly visible in the north-east of the castle. He also built an extensive walled garden, fishponds and a grand tree-lined avenue which led to Roscommon town.

Roscommon Castle was under siege by Hugh O’Donnell during the Nine Years War in 1596, and again in 1599. The castle was also attacked during the Confederate Wars of the 1640s. The bloodshed didn’t end there, as Oliver Cromwell’s forces seized the castle in 1652 and destroyed the fortifications. A fire in 1690 did severe damage to the castle and it was left to fall into disrepair through the 18th and 19th centuries.

Today you can experience this hugely significant castle for free, be sure to take the time to visit the abbey too – Roscommon is one of the most historic towns in Ireland!

Booking.com is part of Booking Holdings Inc., the world leader in online travel and related services.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, and they're all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff are and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.
