International Barging Tours

Traveling by barge may bring out the sybarite in you. In the best way, of course. Someone else is at the wheel, someone else is in the kitchen, someone else is making all the hard decisions while you enjoy the comfort of a pleasant craft. Interesting scenery is usually at hand and river towns provide unexpected pleasures. The easy companionship of small groups is another feature of these trips; our barges are not large. Each carries twenty to twenty-four passengers, two per cabin. All cabins have private bath.

We have several itineraries in the canals of Noord and Zuid (North and South) Holland, with access to the famous “Garden of Europe,”  Keukenhof. In Germany our barge follows the Main River through Bavaria (called Franconia by the locals) and a separate German tour follows the Mosel and Saar Rivers in western Germany, not far from France. In Belgium our barge goes along the Zenne and Scheldt rivers, while in France the Seine brings us into Paris itself.

Relaxing on deck, you are at liberty to read that book you’ve been looking forward to, or simply to day dream a little. There will be guided tours and informative programs to let you know where you are and what you’re seeing. And three times a day the chef and staff surprise you with another special meal.

Pamper the sybarite in you.

Hôtel Carlton Lyon sits in the heart of Lyon’s Presqu’île, the city’s bustling central peninsula set between the Rhône and Saône Rivers. This trendy district contains a multitude of cafés, restaurants, shops, museums, and entertainment options, and offers the perfect base from which to explore the city of Lyon. Housed in a lovely cream-colored stone building with wrought-iron railings, the hotel is decorated with upscale, red-accented furnishings and offers a luxe cozy bar/lounge, bicycles for rent, spa with massage service (for a fee), and complimentary Wi-Fi internet access. All 80 air-conditioned guest rooms have private bath with hair dryer, tea- and coffee-making facilities, minibar, in-room safe, TV, and phone.

The 126-foot MS Jeanine provides a leisurely private cruising experience along the impossibly charming canals of Burgundy.  The barge’s bright blue and white exterior trim give way to a contemporary interior featuring a cozy lounge/bar and a restaurant with panoramic windows (both of which serve complimentary beer, wine, and cocktails throughout the cruise).  The Jeanine also offers two open-air spaces to relax and take in the scenery:  the sun deck, running along the top of the barge and offering loungers and parasols; and the barbecue deck, an open space at the bow with tables and chairs for enjoying a snack or drink.  Please note: The sun deck is only accessible when the barge is docked due to the low clearance of the canal’s bridges while cruising.  Other amenities include an outdoor Jacuzzi, a number of complimentary bicycles available to cycle alongside the canals, and complimentary Wi-Fi internet access.  Each of the 11 air-conditioned cabins is 97 square feet and includes an above-waterline window and private en-suite bathroom with stand-up shower.  While equipped with all necessary amenities, you may find the bathroom to be smaller than a standard hotel bathroom.

Due to the nature of barge travel, ships are built in a compact manner to navigate narrow canals and low bridges.  As such, ceilings on the barge are approximately two meters (6 feet, 6 inches) in height. There is also limited storage space inside cabins, and luggage will be stored underneath the beds, which have a maximum clearance of 15 ¾ inches.

Testimonials

“ What a wonderful new perspective for travel to France to become a passenger on a river barge. Gliding through the center of the country was a unique experience. With each stop we visited a village or town rich with history, walking in the same footsteps where Barbizon artists lived and created their art.

Mountain Biking Annapurna Circuit - 14 Days

Dear Rana, With “Adventure Himalayan Travels & Treks” I have had one of my most beautiful travel experiences ever. Organization in your hands was completely finished. I had a top quality Mountain bike available. It was a wonderful track, the weather conditions may not have been optimal – lots of snow – but the satisfaction afterwards was great. Also a big thanks to Purna, my guide, who was always by my side, and contributed to the success of my crossing of the Thorang La Pass (5416 m high) I can only recommend this trip with “Adventure Himalayan Travels & Treks » with great enthusiasm to every Mountain bike-enthusiast. Bike and Barge: Amsterdam to Bruges Plus! Belgium's Breweries

The boat and crew were fantastic. Accommodations on board were very nice. Bike routes kept the cyclist off the main roads and scenery was very nice. Food was excellent, and mileage was sufficient and cyclist could ride more miles at the end of each day if desired. I would recommend this tour for those folks who like flat easy riding and not having to pack and repack each day.

This was an excellent and well organised tour. We really enjoyed the balance of cycling and hiking and also the less strenuous activities. This was a great way to explore the north coast of the South Island. Our guide, Rob, was excellent. He was enthusiastic at the same time as being relaxed, and we loved learning all about New Zealand from him. Many thanks Rob and Adventure South

Bike & barge tour Provence and Camargue: from Aigues-Mortes to Avignon

My first bike and barge trip, it was a wonderful experience! Well planned. The crew was great, clearly working together well. Nice to see. Irene's dinners were as good as any following restaurant meals in Avignon and Paris. Yum! Sorry I didn't take pictures of her delicious dishes before eating them. Two criticisms - as another woman observed, there should have been two tour guides, with one riding sweep. That responsibility shouldn't be left to us. Also, the A/C in my cabin was way too cold. Overall, it was tremendous! Looking forward to the next one; hope so anyway! Thanks..

What people love about Bike and Barge Tours

Our communication with Rana at Adventure Himalayan Travels & treks was good, the reply was always quick and he replied to all our questions and inquiries. We also met shortly our first night in Kathmandu for greetings and introduction to our guide Harka. Harka is a great guy with lots of humour and an excellent guide. He made sure that we had everything we needed on the trek at all times. Whether it was keeping track on bookings, go in advance to order lunch or helping out with the bikes so they always was in good condition. You name it and Harka fix. We felt real lucky with such an experienced and pro guide. Absolutely worth a little xtra pay. The route and scenery was awesome both up and down, and on the way down from Thurong pass towards Pokhara we went trough some awesome downhill and real fun singel trails. The ride in general was at times quite hard and bumpy and also quite technical, so a little experience in advance is nice, but not a necessity you just need to go real slow at times. All in all great experience, totally recommend and much more fun to bike than hike.

The website starts off by telling you that International Bicycling Tours is different because they meet you at the airport...they do NOT. (alternative truth). $100 Lyft ride and 2 hours to get to the first venue. The IBT corner and sweep system is just a cheap trick so they don't have hire people to do it properly. The accommodations were mediocre at best, the first B&B was charming but uncomfortable. The second was a nice hotel at the airport, like right across the street and the planes were flying all night. Very noisy... The rental bikes provided were old and in disrepair. Mechanical problems ranged from brakes and chains failing to one man's handlebars slipping off. There was only one tour guide and he was very unprofessional. He knew practically nothing about the area and led us into a very dangerous situation which was avoidable. I did have one of the best prime ribs at dinner one night. The other bright spot were the people I was with, a Meet-up group from Tampa. Everything IBT did was to save money but the tour was quite expensive. I am doing a 5-day in Key West at about half the cost. If I were doing it again, I would do a little research and book my own. The area is beautiful and it would be hard to screw up a tour...but IBT did it.

Holland: Tulip Tour

We call it ….

… our Holland Bike and Barge Tulip Tour, but that understates the flowery pleasures of traveling in North Holland in Spring. Hyacinths, daffodils and other narcissi as well as tulips thrive in this level area near the sea, to be sent all over the world. A visit in blossom time is flower-lovers’ heaven. In addition to the seasonal delights, we take time to visit picturesque villages, a wooden shoe maker (klompenmaker), a cheese farm, and explore other particularly Dutch endeavors. Our route will bring us in a circle from Amsterdam, where your IBT guide will meet you at Schiphol Airport, to Purmerend on the stubby cape of North Holland, up to Alkmaar and then south to Haarlem and Leiden with a highlight of the trip at Lisse, where one of the world’s most beautiful gardens unfolds its glories every spring. At Keukenhof more tulips and daffodils and hyacinths than you could dream of open throughout seven individual gardens set around a castle in the English landscape style, unforgettable views and vistas wherever you look. The final afternoon the barge will dock in Amsterdam, and the following day the group will be taken by coach to Schiphol Airport.

Biking is delightful, as would be expected in the country that has more bicycle paths than any other in the world. Much of the time we are in the polder region, land reclaimed from the sea and not surprisingly as level as a table. Broad, flat fields, dikes and narrow canals make up a landscape accented by windmills. We go through towns where medieval buildings still set the tone and we discover the myriad delights of Dutch pancakes: thin but huge, lopping over the side of the plate, perhaps spiced with ginger, possibly substantial with meat and eggs, or perhaps sweet with fruit and masses of Dutch whipped cream. It takes diligence to learn Dutch pancakes.

Meanwhile, you have settled into your cabin on the barge, your base for the entire trip. You only unpack once! Dutch barges are comfortable and practical vessels. On the lower deck each cabin has twin beds, private bath, and a porthole view of the passing scene. On the upper deck you’ll gather with your friends in the bar, or in the salon for meals, or to relax on the sun deck. All breakfasts and dinners will be on the barge; lunches are on your own, in whatever interesting place we reached.

Your trip will not only bring you to Holland at a time of year that can justly be called sensational, it will allow you to see the country as the Dutch do. By bicycle and barge.

Two women standing of hill above sea with barge in distance

People on Bibby Stockholm treated like ‘cattle’, former workers say

Ex-employees say asylum seekers on barge subjected to rancid food, bed bugs and flooding, and made to ‘feel like scum’

Asylum seekers on the Bibby Stockholm , the controversial barge in Dorset on which one man killed himself, are treated like “cattle” and are made to endure rancid food, bed bugs and flooding, former workers have said.

A pair of ex-employees have spoken publicly for the first time about the putrid state of the vessel, and how asylum seekers have been subjected to power cuts and poor physical conditions.

Levana Coker and Bella Basstone worked on the barge from before it opened to asylum seekers in summer 2023 until the end of the year. Coker worked as a housekeeper and Basstone worked on reception.

They said they witnessed some staff treating the asylum seekers harshly and that many complaints were ignored.

Coker said that while many of the asylum seekers onboard were heartbroken after the death of Leonard Farruku , 27, she claimed one member of the kitchen staff said to her it was “one less Muslim mouth to feed” .

Coker said: “The way the asylum seekers were treated on the barge was like cattle or animals in a zoo. This place needs to be closed down.”

Basstone said she knew Farruku and had checked him in when he arrived on the barge.

“He was smiley and funny and sweet when he arrived, but then he kept himself to himself. When we were told he had died we were told not to tell anyone,” she added.

Coker said that when one asylum seeker on the barge became ill, and could not keep food down, a doctor recommended iced drinks for him.

View from above of barge in harbour

She said she offered to go home and get some ice lolly moulds to make frozen drinks for him but was refused permission by a staff member whom she claims told her: “That’s not your job. I don’t give a fuck if he dies.”

“There wasn’t much compassion for the asylum seekers on the barge,” she said. “The last thing they needed was for the people working on the barge to make them feel like scum. Although the asylum seekers can go out from the barge it feels like the closest thing to a prison.”

Both women said they watched the mental health of the men onboard deteriorate due to the conditions and their anxiety about the progress of their claims – especially the threat of being deported to Rwanda.

“I had to show four men to a room not much bigger than the size of a pantry,” said Basstone. “When they saw the conditions they were expected to live in they all started crying. One of them said to me: ‘This is not OK.’”

She saw another man who she said was “very smiley” when he arrived on the barge. “A week later I saw him sitting on the stairwell weeping and just staring out at the sea.

“Another man was mentally and physically strong when he arrived but he deteriorated there and managed to find alternative accommodation with a family member. ‘The barge broke me,’ he told me.”

Basstone added: “The men were scared about so many things. They kept coming up to reception and asking if they were going to be sent to Rwanda.

after newsletter promotion

“Sometimes, the room flooded and many of them were scared the barge was going to sink. They could never feel safe in a place like that.”

Poor conditions included raw or mouldy food, bed bugs that left some of the men with multiple bites on their bodies, a shortage of bedding, and flimsy bunk beds so uncomfortable that some of the men slept on the floor.

Coker said that “nine times out of 10” complaints from the asylum seekers about conditions onboard were ignored.

“Whenever Home Office officials or MPs visited, there was a deep clean of the barge and nicer food than usual was served. When media visited before the barge opened only a few of the best rooms were shown to journalists.”

There was a WhatsApp group for staff and asylum seekers on the barge. Some of the messages seen by the Guardian talked about a member of staff explaining there had been a power cut, which affected the hot water supply.

One asylum seeker posted in the group: “This barge feels like a prison”, another complained that “the fish was so uncooked that it was talking to me”, while a third said he had lost some of his teeth from chewing tough meat.

One asked staff to open up the games room because “we are all in the depression room”.

The Home Office said: “We do not recognise any of these allegations. Everyone in our care is treated with dignity and respect at all times. The vessel has also been visited by several parliamentary committees, including UNHCR, who have had unfettered access to our service users.

“There are rigorous safeguarding processes in place on the barge and residents have access to health and social care services, including mental health support. If concerns are raised about any aspect of the service delivered, we work with the provider to ensure these are swiftly addressed, and Migrant Help 24/7 is also available every day of the year.”
