EVENT UPDATE: Gates are now open! Thank you for your patience.
Rebelution’s Good Vibes Summer Tour returns to the Skyline Stage at the Mann on Friday, July 7 with special guests Iration, The Expendables, Passafire & DJ Mackle!
Founded in Isla Vista, CA, Rebelution has followed their instincts since the release of their breakout 2007 debut, Courage To Grow . In 2009, the band topped the Billboard Reggae Chart for the first of what would be five consecutive #1 records; in 2017, they garnered a GRAMMY® nomination for Best Reggae Album.
Rebelution’s transcendent live performances, meanwhile, have earned the group sell-out headline shows everywhere from Red Rocks to The Greek Theatre, along with festival slots at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, ACL, Glastonbury, and more. In The Moment , the band’s wide-ranging 2021 studio album, infused the quartet’s soulful, exhilarating brand of modern reggae with addictive pop hooks, alt-rock grit, and hip-hop grooves. Their latest album, Live in St. Augustine , was recorded at their sold-out show at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in 2021.
Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.com and the Mann's Ticket Office .

Iration are an American reggae group. They formed in Isla Vista, California in 2004, and are based in nearby Santa Barbara.
With a name that could not possibly be further opposed to the general perception of reggae - it’s about as easy to imagine Bob Marley becoming irate about something as it is to picture the members of Slipknot sitting down for afternoon tea and a nice slice of cake - Iration set out to give the genre a much-needed shot in the arm in 2004, when they began playing shows in the small college town of Isla Vista. The rock edge they brought to their music commanded the attention of locals, and that propelled them to national attention within the genre when their debut full-length, ‘No Time for Rest’, topped the Billboard Reggae Charts in 2007. They opened for Pepper on tour the following year, their first nation jaunt within the U.S.
They followed up their debut with records including 2010’s ‘Time Bomb’ and 2013’s ‘Automatic’, although the latter was not released before the departure of co-lead vocalist Kai Rediske, who worked on the album. A vague statement on the band’s website, suggesting that he departed to “pursue other interests”, has failed to quell speculation that tension between Rediske and the band’s other singer, Micah Pueschel, led to the split.
Live reviews
Living on the coasts of California, and having influences like Sublime, its not surprise that Joseph Dickens, Dam Taylor, Cayson Peterson, Micah Pueschel and Joseph King started a reggae band called Iration to express their creativity. The quintuplet started their band while living in sunny Santa Barbara, California, where the beach life is easy. Playing a lot of college venues, they gained a huge underground following of people who would travel a pretty far distance to see them live; usually an act that is never regretted.
Their shows are the epitome of California living. Tons of people flock to their shows, usually dressed in California hobo chic. They all take the stage at once, pick up their instruments and slowly start to play. There is a buildup of sounds, chord progressions that lead into the laidback sounds that is reggae, or better yet, reggae rock. With their emblem in the background, they jam for an hour-long set, met with a lot of energy that the crowd is eating up. You can’t fight the head bob and sway that takes over you by the sounds of their music. The fusion of guitar solos and laidback mentality is an absolute California staple.

Californian quintet Iration has well and truly made an impact with their likeable personalities and rock infused reggae that brings a little slice of the West Coast sunshine with them whenever they perform live. The three albums the band have currently recorded may have not fared well commercially yet the vibrant sounds have won them a legion of loyal fans.
The colourful lights are set to give the stage the effect of hazy sunshine and the summery tone is very much set for the group's arrival. The crowd erupts in deafening cheers at their appearance and they walk the length of the stage acknowledging them fondly before picking up their instruments.
They play a varied setlist which demonstrates the creative way in which they infuse the two genres and the singable hooks on 'Summer Nights' and 'One Way Night' has the whole room getting involved. Iration could be described as a relatively new artist, so with the level of support they have on the live circuit could see their next album being a huge success.
The concert was incredible! It started off with a bang with New Kingston. They were really good. Pepper was awesome too. I saw Pepper before and their last performance was not very good. Then of course Iration was a well deserved main attraction. I've seen this band play 3 times and every time they get better. Their production was awesome and they also did a few cover songs which was great. I will continue to see Iration any time they are in town. What a spectacular show.
Best concert ever!!!! They exceeded my expectations and sounded better than they did on cd! As long as there's a concert for them in my area, I will go to every one. The VIP was just awesome! Such awesome guys and so down to earth!
Fabulous show!!! Their performance was tight and Iration members were engaging! Sounded great, but especially Loved the Tom Petty cover. Set was too short, wanna see Iration on stage LONGER!!! Come back soon and give us more!
I wish they had more Nor Cal shows, I'd try and go to everyone. Fucking amazing show! They're one of my favorite bands to watch/hear live. ACE of Spades is a great venue. It's an intimate way to hear great music live!
They were absolutely amazing! Played all their best songs and had the best vibe with the whole crowed while everyone was singing along! I will most definitely be seeing them again when they come back!!
Listen to them all the time and they sounded just as good and know how to put on a show! I love that we got to see New Kingston and Pepper and all did some music together!great bands. Awesome show.
Back to Back INCREDIBLE nights with Iration in Sactown!
They remain one of the best live acts out there right now. They bring the fire every night and are hitting on all cylinders.
The venue was great and the bands were Awesome! Will definitely recommend to others! You guys rock! Plenty of parking and the building was nice and cool when it was 90 plus outside.

- Bor — you can see this city while looking across the Volga from Nizhny Novgorod's downtown. Center of ship-building and glass-making industry
- Dzerzhinsk — the region's second largest city is one of the world's most polluted, due to its history as a major chemicals production site, and has life expectancies of less than 50 years for both men and women; the city was until 1990 closed to foreigners, but is now open for those who wish to see its singular and towering hyperboloid Shukhov Tower on the banks of the Oka River
- Kstovo — a small Soviet-era industrial city (petrochemicals), which grew out of on an old village of the same name. Kstovo is home to the World Sambo Academy; an important 18th-century church is in the adjacent village of Veliky Vrag

- Sarov — a small closed city, formerly a secret city known as Arzamas-16, which serves as a major center for Russia (and the USSR's) nuclear program, has rather European architecture since it was built by German POWs, and is located near the holy Sarova monastery; in reference to the US nuclear program at Los Alamos , researchers here fondly call the city "Los Arzamas"
Other destinations [ edit ]
- Kerzhensky Nature Reserve
- Makaryevsky Monastery — a huge and beautiful monastery on the Volga River, which is easily reached by a summer 3 hour long hydrofoil from Nizhny Novgorod
Understand [ edit ]
Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is one of the most populous and economically important regions of the Volga Region, centered on its capital Nizhny Novgorod. Aside from the capital itself, the region is perhaps best known outside of Russia for its tradition of making painted, wooden matryoshka dolls. Less known, perhaps, are Khokhloma handicraft.

By train [ edit ]
The city of Nizhny Novgorod is one of the first major stops from Moscow on one of the main routes of the Trans-Siberian Railway (8 hour trip). Several trains form Moscow terminate in Nizhny Novgorod (two overnight trains and one or two faster day trains). Many others continue beyond, to Kirov , Perm , Yekaterinburg , and points east, up to Vladivostok and Beijing . Some of these trains also stop at a number of other stations as they cross the oblast, e.g. Dzerzhinsk before reaching the Nizhny, or Semenov , Shakhunya and Uren beyond it. These trains usually leave from Moscow's Kursk Station or Yaroslavl Station .
Several faster trains ( Lastochka and Strizh ) make the trip between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod in about 4 hours.
There is also a direct daily train to Nizhny Novgorod from Saint Petersburg , and, at least during the summer seasons, from a number of destinations on the Black Sea coast, such as Adler (for Sochi ). Trains from Nizhny Novgorod also travel south, to/from Saransk ( Mordovia ) and Kazan (via the Kanash junction in Chuvashia .
Some cities in southern part of the oblast ( Navashino , Arzamas , Sergach ) are easily reachable by trains running on another route ( Moscow - Kazan ) of the Trans-Siberian system. They leave from Moscow's Kazan Station .
By plane [ edit ]
Nizhny Novgorod's Strigino airport (GOI) had a new terminal opened in 2016, just when most of direct international flights to Nizhny Novgorod (Lufthansa from Frankfurt , Finnair from Helsinki , or Czech from Prague ) were terminated. The city is still served by inexpensive domestic flights from major Russian cities—the flight from Moscow is as cheap as $35. Kaliningrad based KD Avia offers flights to Kaliningrad and then on to a number of Russian and international destinations. There are also direct flights to a number of destination in Central Asia (popular with migrant workers), and (mostly charter or seasonal) flights to some Mediterranean tourist destinations.
The airport is served by several city bus lines (in daytime only). One can take any of these buses to get to the nearest subway lines, and then take subway to wherever it goes.
By boat [ edit ]
Nizhny Novgorod is frequently included as a stop on summer boat cruises on the Volga River; some boats also stop at the Makariev Monastery.
By bus [ edit ]
A fair number of intercity buses circulate along the Volga Highway (aka M7), between Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Cheboksary, and Kazan. While less convenient than trains, buses allow access to towns not served by rail, such as Lyskovo.
Bus [ edit ]
There is no rail line due east of Nizhny Novgorod. Instead, one can take a bus along the M7 highway (the Kazan highway). Commuter buses for Kstovo and other destinations nearby go from the Sennaya bus station a few blocks east of Sennaya Square; to go further east, take a bus from the Main Bus Station ( Avtovokzal ) near Lyadov Square.
One can also take a bus from the Main Bus Station to various points throughout the southern half of the oblast, e.g. Arzamas.
Buses to the west (toward Moscow), northwest (Chkalovsk), and north (Bor) run mostly from a bus station near Nizhny Novgorod's Moscow Station.
Boat [ edit ]
In the summer, hydrofoil boats (colloquially known as Raketa , after the first model of them) used to run from Nizhny Novgorod's River Terminal ( Rechnoy Vokzal ) down the Volga, to Rabotki , Makaryevo , and beyond. Unfortunately, by 2010, most of these services have been cancelled.
Ferryboats from downtown Nizhny Novgorod run to Bor across the river (very frequent service). There is also much less frequent service (half a dozen trips a day) between Lyskovo and Marakyevo, providing easy access to Makaryev Monastery. Both systems transport passengers and vehicles.
Aerial ropeway [ edit ]
A unique installation for central Russia, an aerial ropeway spans the Volga, connecting Nizhny Novgorod with Bor. The scenic service is very frequent, although somewhat pricey for such a short distance (90 RUR, as of 2016).
See [ edit ]
Outside of the cities, there are a number of important monasteries within Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, such as Makaryev Monastery (across the Volga from Lyskovo), or the Diveyevo Monastry not far from Sarov, in the southwest of the province.
Do [ edit ]
Eat [ edit ], drink [ edit ], stay safe [ edit ], go next [ edit ].
Russia's Golden Ring is nearby and its prominent attractions at Vladimir and Suzdal can be daytripped from Nizhny Novgorod by bus.
The next major stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway are Vladimir to the west and Kirov to the east.

Nizhny Novgorod: A ‘Russian Detroit’ from 19th to 21st centuries (PHOTOS)
Dmitrievskaya Tower through the centuries.
Founded in 1221, Nizhny Novgorod (260 miles east of Moscow) is still one of the most visited and populated Russian cities (it has more than 1.2 million inhabitants). Its ancient kremlin, cozy paved streets with centuries-old buildings (a regular city plan was adopted after Empress Cathrine the Great visited the city in 1767) and scenic views of the Volga River warm the hearts of locals and tourists. By the way, many people confuse it with Veliky Novgorod (established in 859) in the north-west of Russia. In Russian, the word ‘Novgorod’ literally means “new city” and, luckily, there are only two in the whole country: ‘Lower new city’ and ‘Great new city’. One of the oldest and largest automobile plants that produces GAZ cars is still located in Nizhny (Russians often omit ‘Novgorod’) - and that’s why the city is often known as the ‘Russian Detroit’. In Soviet times, it bore the name of main Soviet writer Maxim Gorky , who was born there.
And despite its steel and metal history, today, Nizhny Novgorod has the poetic epithet of the capital of sunsets. We compared some vintage and recent photos of the city.
Dmitrievskaya Tower in 1913 and in 2021.
The stone citadel of Nizhny Novgorod was built in the 16th century around the Chasovaya (Sentry) Hill. Here is the most famous view of the fortress with the Dmitrievskaya Tower. Previously, a moat was dug in front of the tower, which was filled with water. At the end of the 18th century, the moat was filled and the tower sunk about 6 meters into the ground. The tower received its a-la Rus facade only at the end of the 19th century.
2. National Unity Square
Skoba square, 1957 / Monument to Minin and Pozharsky nowadays.
On Moscow’s Red Square, there is a monument to Minin and Pozharsky , who were the leaders of the people’s militia against the Polish intervention of 1611. Interestingly, exactly the same monument stands in Nizhny Novgorod! And all because the militia gathered there. City official Kuzma Minin called on all residents to fight and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky was chosen as the militia head. The date of Moscow’s liberation from the Poles (November 4) has been celebrated as National Unity Day in Russia since 2005. In the same year, Nizhny Novgorod’s Skoba Square, where the militia gathered, was renamed ‘National Unity Square’ and a monument to the two national heroes was erected there, as well.
3. Chkalov staircase
View on Nizhny Novgorod kremlin, Dyatlov hills and Chkalov stairs, 1886 and now.
With 560 steps, these are some of the longest stairs in Russia! The site where this staircase was built was called the ‘Volga Downhill’ and was very popular among locals, since it had one of the most picturesque views of the Volga. The stairs, named after a pilot named Valery Chkalov, connect the upper and lower embankments in the historical center of Nizhny Novgorod. Among the architects was Lev Rudnev , who worked in the Stalinist Empire style and designed the Moscow State University and the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw.
4. Kremlin funicular
Kremlin funicular in operation... and in ruins.
Amazing: At the end of the 19th century, in the center of Nizhny Novgorod, two funiculars operated near the kremlin. They literally worked on water. Imagine a water tank in the car: filled at the upper station, empty at the lower station. When one car went down, the lower one went up under its gravity. They would move at the same time. The funiculars were abandoned in the 1920s, when a tram line was completed. Today, only ruins remain in place of the historical funiculars, although the city administration has already promised to recreate this type of transport. There still is one funicular operating in Nizhny Novgorod, which connects it with the city of Bor on the other side of the Volga River.
5. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street
Bolshaya Pokrovskaya street in 1880s and 2021.
The main street of Nizhny Novgorod has undergone many changes over the centuries. Before the revolution of 1917, it was the favorite area of nobles to settle. Along the street, you can still see old stone mansions, theaters, churches. One of the most beautiful buildings is the main state bank built in Neo-Russian style. It was opened for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov house in 1913. At the beginning of the 20th century, a tram line passed there - one of the first in Russia. But, since the 1980s, the street has become pedestrian only.
6. Rozhdestvenskaya Street
Rozhdestvenskaya Street in 1890s and 2020.
A historical tram line has been preserved on the other oldest street, Rozhdestvenskaya. However, now it’s a tourist transport and it operates only in summer. The street has also preserved its appearance since pre-revolutionary times. There, you can see almost all the same buildings that were in Tsarist Russia, including the Stroganov and Golitsyn estates, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Blinov Passage - the first shopping center outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Construction of the Burevestnik station, 1996 / Burevestnik station, 2009.
Nizhny Novgorod is one of the seven Russian cities with its own underground transport. The metro here was opened in 1985: In Soviet times, only cities with the population over 1 million residents had a subway. It consists of only two lines and sees about 115,000 commuters a day, which makes it less popular than ground transports. In the near future, there are plans to build new stations on the other side of the Oka River.
8. Referees Tower
Before and after restoration, 2021.
The Referees Tower built in the Neo-constructivist style on the embankment of the Grebnoy Canal was built in 1988 for the 2nd All-Union Youth Rowing Games. Over time, it was severely destroyed and only recently restored, for the 800th anniversary of the city. Of course, with cafes and places to relax. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?
9. GAZ automobile plant
The first car assembly plant, 1930 / Gorky Automobile Plant, 2021.
The GAZ (Gorky Automobile Plant) plant in Nizhny Novgorod became one of the first in Russia. Early models of trucks and passenger cars were produced under a Ford license. In the 1920s-1930s, American specialists also helped to build the plant itself and the socialist city for workers In the post-war years, the ‘Volga’ and ‘Chaika’ cars were the most expensive among Soviet cars - a citizen’s dream! These days, the plant still operates, but produces mainly trucks and minibuses.
10. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
High water in Nizhny Novgorod, 1890s/ The same district nowadays.
The Cathedral Church of Nizhny Novgorod is located in one of the most picturesque places of the city - on the arrow of the Volga and the Oka rivers. People used to call it ‘fair church’, since its parishioners were merchants who came to fairs from all over the country. It also was only open in the summertime. In the Soviet years, the iconostasis was dismantled for firewood to heat houses and then it was even planned to demolish it altogether and build a lighthouse and a monument to Lenin on the same site. Nevertheless, the cathedral was preserved (in the 1980s, it was restored by volunteers) and, in 2009, was reinstated as the city’s main church.

The Top 12 Things to Do in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia
Take a first-rate trip to Russia's fifth city
Ershov_Maks/Getty Images
Although it's Russia's fifth-largest city, you could be forgiven for never having heard of Nizhny Novgorod. Notwithstanding that another Russian city is simply called " Novgorod ," the current name of the city just doesn't have a memorable ring to it. (By contrast, its name during the Soviet years — Gorky, like the famous author — was much more iconic.) At any rate, this city of just over a million around six hours east of Moscow is more than worth a visit. These are just 12 reasons why!
Tour the Kremlin's 13 Towers
Like most every other city in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is home to a Kremlin. (The word "kremlin" means "citadel" in Russian, and has nothing to do with the modern Russian government) One thing that elevated the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod above others in Russia (with the possible exception of the Moscow Kremlin and one or two others), however, is the fact that its wall has 13 towers. During the summer months, at least one free walking tour per day operates from the main entrance of Nizhny Novgorod's Kremlin.
Climb Russia's Longest Staircase
Named for one of the most famous Russian pilots of the early aviation age (Valery Chkalov), the Chkalov Stairs connect two of Nizhny Novgorod's public squares, which sit on the upper and lower embankments of the Volga River, respectively. Built in 1943 (during the period when Nizhny Novgorod was known as Gorky), the Chkalov Stairs currently have the distinction of being the longest staircase in Russia.
Go Wild at Limpopo Zoo
One thing that surprises many travelers to Nizhny Novgorod is how amazing its zoo, colloquially known as Limpopo is. In addition to being home to a tropical botanical garden (which, not surprisingly, is indoors), the zoo hosts a variety of reptiles, mammals and birds. There's also a small sculpture park on the grounds of Nizhny Novgorod's zoo, including both original and replica pieces.
Shop (or Just Stroll) Along a Storied High Street
Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street has been the de-facto "Main Street" of Nizhny Novgorod for more than 200 years. Well, minus the Soviet Union period, during which the cafes that once (and now) lined it became somewhat worthless, since intellectual conversations were basically forbidden. These days, you can come here for a cup of Russian tea then shop at the dozens of boutiques you'll find on either side of the street.
Sun Yourself at the Spit
Nizhny Novgorod sits at the confluence of the Oka and Volga Rivers, with the triangle of land at the point they meet being known as the Nizhny Novgorod Spit. Ignoring the unfortunate double-meaning of its name for a moment, this is actually a wonderful place to get a tan, if it's summer in the city and the sun happens to be shining. Even if not, photographers will enjoy a trip here for a view of the Kremlin and city center across the Volga.
Marvel at the Open-Air Museum of Rozhdestvenskaya Street
Like Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street has long been one of the most important streets in Nizhny Novgorod. However, while the former has become a primarily commercial artery in recent decades, the charm of the latter is in its well-maintained buildings, which hearken back to the mid-18th century. In fact, some locals go so far as to consider Rozhdestvenskaya Street an "open-air museum."
Ride Russia's Newest Cable Car
Russian investment in infrastructure isn't quite as dramatic as that of, say, China, but the Federation has nonetheless built a selection of interesting and modern transportation systems since the fall of the USSR. Among them is the just-opened cable car, which travels from the center of Nizhny Novgorod over the Volga River to suburban Bor. At any rate, a ride over the river and back is definitely worth inclusion on your list of things to do in Nizhny Novgorod.
Taste Traditional Shchi Soup
Shchi is one of Nizhy Novgorod's most delicious local specialties, available in most every local restaurant that serves Russian food. From above, a bowl of shchi seems incredibly complicated, with a colorful palette that suggests the inclusion of dozens of diverse ingredients. In fact, the magic of shchi is in its simplicity. Building on the traditional pan-Russian recipe of cabbage, pork fat and salt (yes, just three ingredients), locals in Nizhny Novgorod sometimes add minced meat or egg whites as bonus items, then top the tangy soup with a dollop of sour cream.
Survey Amazing Russian Orthodox Architecture
Think the only amazing Russian Orthodox churches are in Moscow and St. Petersburg? Think again. Nizhny Novgorod boasts several amazing examples of Russian Orthodox architecture. From the brilliant golde domes John the Baptist Cathedral near the Volga River, to the expansive grounds of 14th-century Pechersky Ascension Monastery, Nizhny Novgorod is an architecture buff's dream!
Take a Look Back in Time
Nizhny Novgorod's historical center is relatively large and well-preserved, but a stroll (or 10) through it isn't the only way to get a feel for the city's centuries-long past. Head to the Russian Museum of Photography, which not only showcases a variety of images of Nizhny Novgorod that date back a century or even longer, but also spotlights the equipment Russian photographers have used throughout the years, and notable figures in Russia's photography history as well.
Visit the Convent from the Movie "Salt"
You'd be forgiven if you've entirely forgotten the 2010 film "Salt." However, if you remember any destination from this spy thriller, it's likely the facade of Makaryev Convent, which is located within day-trip distance of Nizhny Novgorod. Having served as a monastery from its consecration in the early 15th century up until the beginning of the Russian Revolution, Makaryev became a convent after the fall of the Soviet Union , and is now home to 22 nuns.
Take an Excursion to a 12th-Century Tea Town
Another worthwhile day trip from Nizhny Novgorod is to the town of Gorodets, which sits about an hour to its northwest. With a history dating back to the 12th century, Gorodets boasts an interesting array of architecture and museums, including one dedicated to samovars.

Understand.
