John Leguizamo Has a New Travel Show — Here’s Everything We Know

john leguizamo tour dates 2023

When it comes to Latine culture, John Leguizamo always has something to say. Whether performing a one-man stage show like Latin History for Morons or speaking on the lack of Latine representation in Hollywood, Leguizamo has never been shy about offering his opinion about the importance of inclusion and contributions of Latines everywhere.

Now, Leguizamo has a new platform to share his thoughts on how Latine communities are shaping the country. In Leguizamo Does America , the actor travels across the U.S. to celebrate Latine history, culture, food and people. “It’s part politics, part road trip, and part history lesson, all wrapped in a vintage Leguizamo adventure, showcasing the fastest-growing demographic in the nation,” reads a press release.

A six-episode docuseries on MSNBC, Leguizamo Does America premiered on Sunday (April 16) with the Violent Night star visiting New York City to show viewers what kind of impact Latines have had on the largest city in the U.S. “I don’t know what New York would be without Latinos, but it sure as hell wouldn’t smell as good, it wouldn’t taste as good, and it definitely wouldn’t sound as good,” Leguizamo said at the start of the first episode.

During the episode, Leguizamo takes audiences to the apartment complex he grew up in Jackson Heights in Queens, a bodega to eat a chopped cheese, a record store to listen to Latine hip-hop, and a community theater where Latine performers are given the opportunity to produce their own work.

“I use the travel show method as a way to smuggle content because I want all of America to have Latin envy and want them to feel like they wish they had been born Latin,” John Leguizamo told The Hollywood Reporter . “That’s my mission, and for Latin people to feel very proud of being Latin.”

Leguizamo Does America  is set to drop new episodes each week on MSNBC.

John Leguizamo

Comedian and actor John Leguizamo is best known for his one-man stage shows and his ability to satirize a range of ethnic groups.

John Leguizamo

Who Is John Leguizamo?

John Leguizamo spent the mid- to late-1980s performing in comedy clubs. He made his film debut in Casualties of War (1989). Other film roles followed in quick succession. He turned to live theater as a means of blasting Latino stereotypes through fierce comedic caricature. Leguizamo's onstage success led to television opportunities.

Leguizamo was born on July 22, 1964, in Bogotá, Colombia. With his chameleon-like ability to satirize a range of ethnic groups, Leguizamo is perhaps best known for his one-man stage shows.

Although born in Colombia, Leguizamo spent his formative years in the Jackson Heights neighborhood in Queens, New York. His parents spent much of their time either working or bickering. His turbulent home life would become the basis of some of Leguizamo's most popular creative work. His parents eventually divorced when he was 14. Meanwhile, Leguizamo began experimenting with the milder forms of delinquency.

He was arrested twice, once for hopping a subway turnstile and another time for truancy. He also ran afoul of the law when he and a friend commandeered a subway public address system and performed an impromptu comedy routine. While his comedy stylings would later amuse Broadway audiences, the Queens police were less than tickled by the effort.

In order to "straighten him out," Leguizamo's parents sent him back to Colombia for a year. Upon his return, Leguizamo continued to demonstrate a penchant for mischief. At the prompting of teachers, Leguizamo attended a local acting school, funding his classes through a job at Kentucky Fried Chicken. This led to a stint at New York University in 1991, but Leguizamo soon left school to join the Off Center Theater, a Manhattan comedy troupe.

Leguizamo spent the mid- to late-1980s performing in comedy clubs, polishing his material and working on the various stage personas that would later populate his live shows. He made his film debut in Brian De Palma's critically acclaimed Vietnam drama, Casualties of War (1989). Other film roles followed in quick succession, from bit parts in big-budget vehicles like Die Hard II (1990) and Regarding Henry (1991), to featured roles in independent films, like 1991's Hanging with the Homeboys .

Despite his rising professional fortunes, Leguizamo was frustrated by the roles offered him, which often involved playing thugs or drug dealers. He turned to live theater as a means of blasting Latino stereotypes through fierce comedic caricature.

His first effort, Mambo Mouth (1991), opened off Broadway and was later picked up by HBO for broadcast on their HBO Comedy Theater series. The performance won an Obie Award from the Village Voice, an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Vanguard Award, and a CableACE Award. Although some critics contended that the show perpetuated the very stereotypes is purported to undermine, audiences disagreed.

Leguizamo's 1992 follow-up, Spic-O-Rama , continued on in the same vein. His 1998 offering, Freak , was equally successful and turned into an HBO special directed by Spike Lee. 2001 saw Leguizamo return to the stage with Sexaholix...a Love Story , which was based on his sold-out national tour, "John Leguizamo Live!"

Television Career

Leguizamo's onstage success led to television opportunities. Reluctant to take part in a situation comedy, he convinced the FOX Network to carry a Latino-flavored variety show called House of Buggin' . Although the show lasted only one season, it performed well in metropolitan markets and boosted Leguizamo's film profile.

He then played a drag queen in the commercially successful To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) and Tybalt in the daring modernization of Romeo and Juliet (1996). Roles in everything from smash hits like Ice Age and turns as television doctors on E.R. have followed.

Personal Life

Leguizamo married Justine Maurer in 2003. They have two children; daughter Allegra Sky was born in 1999 and son Ryder Lee followed in 2000.

Leguizamo Does America

Though often overlooked, Latinos have been making contributions to the culture of NYC all along.

John tours Miami's historic sector, Little Havana, with community leader Marvin Tapia, and discusses the influence of the Cuban community in Miami. He then meets with the Borges family who through hard work and sacrifice have turned their dreams of owning a Cuban Coffee shop into a reality. John later meets with actor, playwright and activist Carmen Pelaez to discuss the stronghold the right wing has had on the Latino community and the future of Miami politics. John then visits the arts district of Miami which has earned that title largely due to the Latinx artists who have painted its impressive walls. He speaks with Evoca1, a muralist whose ideology has influenced him to tell complex Latinx stories through his art. Later, John meets up with singer/songwriter Elena Rose to discuss the current state of Latin music, Miami as its hub, and the future for her and other women in the industry. John also visits Peruvian chef Juan Chipoco at his flagship restaurant, Ceviche 105 to learn about his journey to becoming a mogul in the industry, by honoring the food of his homeland. Lastly, John meets up with comedian George Harris, who has built community and gives immigrants a safe place to laugh and rejoice in stories that reflect their personal experiences.

John first meets up with actor Diane Guerrero to chat about her experiences as an immigrant, author and activist over some of the best Latin food in town. He then meets up with Congressman Ritchie Torres from the Bronx to discuss the lack of Latinx representation in government and what can be done about it. John also speaks with Maria Teresa Kumar of Voto Latino to discuss the importance of voter registration within the Latinx community and how that will increase representation. And he goes canvassing to register potential voters with the help of activist and Vice President of Unidos US, Clarissa Martinez De Castro. John then takes a tour of the Smithsonian's Latin American History exhibition with Founding Director of The National Museum of the American Latino, Jorge Zamanillo to discuss the need for a proper museum that more accurately tells the Latinx story in this country. Later, John meets up with poet/activist Quique Aviles, who has lived in D.C. since he was a child and fights against gentrification through the spoken word. Lastly, John visits the Gala Theater and the immigrant kids who find their voices and their strength through performance art.

John meets up with renowned actor Michael Peña to learn about what it was like to grow up in the Midwest, while still attempting to retain his Mexican culture. By participating in a Peña family barbeque, John sees first-hand just how much family and friends who become family, help keep traditions alive and create safe spaces for those making a new home in a strange land. John also meets up with Congressman Chuy Garcia, who works tirelessly to bring about equity in government on behalf of the Latinx community. John then connects with Mario Hernández Jr. who shows him around the borough of Pilson, where political murals (a tradition started in Mexico) line the streets. He then talks with local artists who are passing on the tradition of political art to the community through printmaking. John has a chat with some of Chicago's queer youth activists who are actively working to provide education and a safe environment for their peers. Lastly, John gets the lowdown on Humboldt Park from community leader, Mike Oquendo. He introduces John to the Humboldt Park firemen who are entirely Latino and break all stereotypes through their community activism.

John starts his travels by visiting with up-and-coming trans reggaeton artist, Villano Antillano, who is changing the face and the rules of the game with her music and her existence. John then goes to La Perla to learn about Bomba music, its origins and how its legacy of resistance still lives on. John then travels to a sacred ceremonial place of the indigenous Taino people, where he meets an elder and discusses the issue of statehood and what that could mean for their tribe as they fight to retain their ancestral lands. Next John journeys to Ponce where he meets up with community activist Javier De Jesús Martínez to learn about how this city is attempting to recover from various natural disasters by working together and retaining their customs. John meets with locals from Ponce who are doing just that. Through honoring the ancient artform of mask-making, the people of Ponce keep their pride intact. Finally, John travels to Bacoa, one of the world's top restaurants and best kept secrets. With the help of Chef's Raúl Correa, René Marichal and Xavier Pacheco, John learns how they are reimagining Puerto Rican food, while honoring the food they ate as children.

John starts his trip by driving to east L.A. with native Angelino, George Lopez. While eating George's favorite tacos, the two discuss George's journey to becoming a star and the importance of allyship. He then shares a cup of coffee with legendary director, Robert Rodriguez who shares how he broke all the rules to forge his own path to success. John then meets up with the L.A. Opera's new Resident Conductor, Lina Gonzalez-Granados who has broken through the fine arts glass ceiling and is making sure to bring her Latin flare to the world of Opera. John then sits down with one of the few Latina Showrunners in the television business, Gloria Calderón Kellett. They share laughs and discuss her professional journey, the lack of representation behind the camera and her continued fight to change the industry from within. John then heads to the Hollywood hills to meet up with Afro Latina, actress/producer, Gina Torres to discuss how colorism has affected her life and career. Finally, John takes some of today's hottest Latinx powerhouses to a Michelin star Mexican restaurant in Inglewood to discuss all things Hollywouldn't, and what needs to happen to truly address the industry's representation problem.

John Leguizamo: It took a Latinx exec to greenlight new series about ‘my culture’

John Leguizamo had been pitching a docuseries about Latinx excellence in America for two years before MSNBC finally picked up the idea, which became the six-part show “Leguizamo Does America.” The series, produced by NBC News Studios, premiered Sunday and is also streaming on Peacock.

Latinx representation matters to Leguizamo, and he says the reason the show got picked up in the first place is because in 2020 Cesar Conde was named chairman of the NBCUniversal News Group. Conde’s father is an immigrant from Peru, and his mother is an immigrant from Cuba.

“A Latinx man who looks like me, who understands my culture, greenlit this show,” Leguizamo, 62, says during an interview at the Sunset Marquis hotel in West Hollywood. “We pitched it to other people, but he’s the one that bought it and gave us this opportunity.”

“Leguizamo Does America” is part travelogue, part history lesson and part reality-show doc, packaged as fast-paced 60-minute episodes featuring Leguizamo’s biting, irreverent humor and good-natured love of life and learning. As he introduces viewers to Latinx leaders in L.A.; New York; Chicago; Miami; Washington, D.C.; and Puerto Rico, it’s clear he’s also relishing learning more about these people and their stories.

His subjects, chosen with the help of his largely Latinx crew, include artists, writers, show runners, architects, restaurateurs, DJs, musicians, politicians and activists, alongside others making things better in their communities by simply being there. Old Cuban men playing chess in a park in Miami, for example, or the man who makes chopped cheese sandwiches at a bodega in Queens.

John Leguizamo and Juan Chipoco sit at a table eating and talking

Leguizamo is striving to convey these people’s importance to a multicultural audience that includes Latinx viewers, whom Leguizamo says often have not had the opportunity to understand their own power and influence. Latinx stories are not regularly told in American history classes, he says, and if they are, the stories often are whitewashed or otherwise made historically inaccurate.

“We don’t realize that we contribute $2.8 trillion to the American GDP every year,” he says, his voice rising in excitement. “If we were our own country, we’d be the fifth-largest economy in the world — bigger than England, bigger than Italy, bigger than Brazil.”

Leguizamo is a self-professed “math kid” and says calculus was his “religion” in college — just the beauty of finding a concrete answer if you worked out the problem and showed the proof. He says he found solace in the simple, inarguable logic of that process, and that statistics have become a way of life for him.

He rattles them off with practiced precision — having committed them to memory to drive his central point home: America’s Latino communities are incalculably valuable, influential and worthy of celebration.

In Los Angeles, Leguizamo notes that Latinx people represent nearly 50% of the city’s population. At the Hollywood box office, he says, Latinos account for one-third of frequent moviegoers, boosting revenue for studios that still massively under-represent them on film.

“We’re not getting our value for our money,” he says.

Leguizamo has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most visible champions of Latinx culture. His uncompromising call for inclusion also makes him one of the group’s most fierce activists. It was not a role he envisioned for himself as a starry-eyed young acting hopeful from the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens.

“I was just a funny kid who was gonna be funny all his life. I was the class clown. And then I realized that things were not fair,” he says. “I’m in a class at NYU — the only Latin kid — and all these white actors were going to five auditions a day, and I’m going to one every five months, and I’m going for drug dealers, murderers, killers, servants.”

Leguizamo said until then he had been idealistic and believed in American meritocracy. As an A-student, paying the same tuition as his white peers, he realized that ideal was a lie when faced with cast breakdowns featuring only “white male actor, white lead actor, white romantic lead, white doctor.”

He remembers thinking, “Why won’t they see me? Why can’t they see me?” But he knew the answer.

A man poses for a portrait.

In 2022, at the height of his professional success, he wrote an open letter to Hollywood published in The Times .

“If white people are 59% of the American population, why do they seem to get 120% of the casting, crew and executive team?” he wrote, noting that Latinos represented a mere 2.9% of the leads in TV, movies, streaming and stage productions.

Leguizamo had already cemented his status as a wrecking ball of the dominant white cultural narrative in 2018 with his Tony-nominated one-man Broadway show, “Latin History for Morons.” In that show, Leguizamo set out to unearth the untold Latinx history that his son never learned in school.

With his signature sarcasm and verve Leguizamo laid out buried facts in that show, including awful ones about how a majority of Latinx people suffered genocide — with entire languages, cultures and religions destroyed.

In “Leguizamo Does America,” the actor does not shy away from the horrors of Latinx history but mostly seeks to highlight its joy, its resilience and its vibrant communities in each place he visits.

In the Los Angeles episode, which has not yet aired, Leguizamo swings by a favorite taco truck with comedian George Lopez and makes fun of himself for being afraid of how hot the salsa might be. The show is full of good-natured digs at white folks, and when Leguizamo asks what white foodies usually order at the truck, the co-owner answers, “quesadillas.”

Leguizamo also has a fascinating talk with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez about how he made the groundbreaking Spanish-language indie hit “El Mariachi” in 1992, and what he has done since then to raise the profile of Latinx actors, writers and directors.

Rodriguez is notable for his success, but Leguizamo says true equality will have been achieved only when Latinx creators are so omnipresent that they are granted a very particular form of grace: “We as Latinx people need to be allowed to fail as much as white people are allowed to fail,” he says. “White people are allowed ‘Ishtar,’ they are allowed ‘Waterworld,’ they’re allowed ‘Jack and Jill.’”

“We need to be allowed to fail too,” he concludes. “That’s equality, right?”

Leguizamo Does America

John Leguizamo is heading back out on the road to explore America’s Latin history.

MSNBC has renewed the award-winning actor’s travel series Leguizamo Does America for a second season. The renewal comes just over a month after the series — which debuted on the cable network on April 16 and also streamed on Peacock — aired its first-season finale. Produced by NBC News Studios, the travelogue show will continue airing on MSNBC for its sophomore run, with season two’s new cities to be announced at a later date.

The first season saw the native New Yorker of Puerto Rican and Colombian descent travel to five cities, including his hometown, Miami, Washington D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as Puerto Rico. The first set of six episodes featured celebrity guests like comedian George Lopez and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, alongside local heroes, young actors, community leaders and more. Directed by award-winner Ben De Jesus, the series explored the past and present of each location’s Latino communities.

“It’s been such an honor and pleasure to create, develop and produce this series with a partner as talented, brilliant and passionate as John Leguizamo,” said Liz Cole, president of NBC News Studios. “We’re especially proud to help put a spotlight on the Latino community’s rich culture and significant contributions to this country, working with a predominantly Latino editorial and production staff. We had an exciting first season with MSNBC Films, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with them again on season two.”

According to MSNBC, Leguizamo Does America reached a broad multicultural audience, including Hispanic viewers, who made up 13 percent of the series broadcast audience. The network also touted the show, which aired at 10 p.m. on Sundays, as the most-viewed MSNBC original in over two years.

The news comes the same day as the award-winning actor is set to appear as a featured speaker at the Aspen Ideas Festival, a weeklong program of the Aspen Institute in partnership with NBCUniversal News Group.

Here's everything we know about the intriguing  Prime Video series...

The Power release date

Episodes 1-3 of The Power will be available on Prime Video from Friday, March 31, with the remaining episodes streaming weekly.

The Power plot

Toni Collette is Seattle mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez in this sci-fi drama which sees teenage girls across the world become aware of a strange new power, as bolts of electricity spark from their fingertips.

They include a couple's foster daughter Allie, Brit Roxy, Margot's daughter, Jos and Nigerian Ndudi.

Meanwhile, parents and political leaders struggle to make sense of the ramifications of this strange new phenomenon.

The Power

The Power cast

Toheeb Jimoh plays Tunde, an aspiring Nigerian journalist investigating this strange new phenomenon.

Halle Bush plays fostered Allie, who never speaks but starts to hear a voice in her head and follows its instructions.

Ria Zmitrowicz plays Roxy Monke, daughter of London crime boss Bernie (Eddie Marsan), who is frustrated about her place in the family hierarchy.

Zrinka Cvitesic plays Eastern European gymnast Tatania, who became the troubled trophy wife of a dictator but longs for freedom.

Is there a trailer for The Power?

Yes, the trailer reveals how teenage girls across the world start to realize the power that they are literally holding at their fingertips, and while for them the phenomenon is amazing, it is clear that not everyone shares their enthusiasm...

What the cast say about The Power

"My character is witnessing a huge power change across the world, especially a gender dynamic shift," explains John Leguizamo, who has appeared in films including Carlito’s Way, Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet.

"His daughter has changed the dynamic in the house, his son is having a difficult time, and his wife is on the rise, in terms of political power."

The Power

"Jos's power isn’t as strong as other people’s," reveals 22-year-old Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the title character in the Disney animation Moana . ‘And that brings up a form of anxiety, which is a shame because the power is something that means freedom for a lot of women. For Jos, it means something different.’

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 26: (L-R) Clayton Davis, John Leguizamo, Aram Rappaport, John Ortiz, Hani Furstenberg and Isabelle Poloner attend 2024 Variety TV FYC Screening Series Presents "The Green Veil" at The London Hotel on April 26, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Jerod Harris/Variety via Getty Images)

John Leguizamo has portrayed a wide range of characters in his career, from comic book villains to Shakespearean legends to drag queens. Despite his versatility, fans have never seen him as dark and unsettling as he is in the new TV series “ The Green Veil .”

His portrayal of the 1950s FBI agent Gordon Rogers was already rattling audiences after the premiere of the first four episodes of the new drama at Variety ‘s TV FYC Screening Series on April 26 in West Hollywood. Following the screening, one fan revealed that it was difficult to witness Leguizamo’s character inflict trauma after trauma and asked how he managed to act out the scripted atrocities.

The eight-episode series follows oppression in America in the 1950s through the story of Rogers, an immigrant who came to the U.S. as a child and chases the American Dream, only to find out it is all a lie.

Rappaport hooked Leguizamo into the project through his heavily researched script exploring the U.S. government’s nefarious plot to separate Indigenous children from their families to prevent them from inheriting land. The land was then handed over to oil companies or other corporate giants, eradicating the generational wealth and horrifically severing their familial bond. Leguizamo added that he was immediately on board with the project when he learned this practice continued from the ’50s and on into the ’80s.

Roger’s pursuit of the dream proves destructive and challenging, not only to watch but to act as well. “It’s really difficult,” Leguizamo said. “You have to go to places that are very uncomfortable within yourself and you have to be willing to live with it for the duration of the shoot. And then I can totally let it go…If you really want to give it the value, you have to be there and willing to feel those horrible feelings.”

“It’s kind of brutal, but you got to do it for the work,” he continued. “Then when you see the product, you go, ‘Oh wow, that’s amazing.'”

Leguizamo also explained that Latinos are rarely present in certain period pieces, and he was happy to take part in crafting a series with Latinos based in the 1950s: “When I saw ‘Mad Men,’ I loved it so much, but I hated it so much because there was not one Latin person. I’ll go, ‘Wait, New York in the ’60s, are you kidding me? We were all over the fucking place. Didn’t you see ‘West Side Story?’ [In ‘The Green Veil’] we had a chance in the ’50s to have Latin people in it. It was incredible to rewrite and do right that we were there. We’ve been here.”

Speaking to that erasure, Rappaport explained that despite Leguizamo’s long tenure in the entertainment industry and celebrated past — the actor has won Emmy and Tony awards — pitching the series was still difficult. “This project was something that we worked on, we pitched, but it’s impossible to get something like this greenlit or to even finesse a pitch in the room,” Rappaport said. “We had to literally start a new network for this show to make it to screen and hopefully find the right audience.”

“The Green Veil” premieres April 30, and the first two episodes are available to watch right now on The Network, a free streaming service created by Rappaport. Watch the full conversation above.
