After opening for korean r&b singers junny and camo this year, koven wei has created his own unique sound for the new generation. the 24-year-old chinese canadian rapper turned singer went viral on tiktok for his cover of dpr ian’s ‘ scaredy cat .’ he recently released his own tracks such as ' everything is red ’ and ‘ before ’ that edge on alternative rock roots., we got to speak to koven before his opening set for gemini on march 16 at the axis club in toronto., y/n magazine: i know you have opened for junny and camo this year. how was your experience, koven wei: it was sick, honestly seeing all the fans. they’re all hella supportive right, [even though] my music is not very korean-style like theirs., you’ve experimented with different genres, but what would you say you feel the most connection with do you feel influenced by certain artists, i would say it’s like antipop, hyperpop. the thing is: i grew up in different eras of music. i had like my k-pop artists, i used to listen to dean, also dpr live was huge for me. his music spoke to me. but now, for hyperpop, i was inspired by younger artists like bladee. they’re hella young - they’re what, sixteen, eighteen they’re inspiring especially for someone who’s older. i just kind of make music that defines my time as i grow up and my experiences., you’re almost creating your own genre through all these different influences and life experiences. i was looking at your tiktok and it’s always changing, i couldn’t pinpoint the genre initially., i can’t either, haha. i can’t figure it out either, you grew up in toronto, right a lot of artists take inspiration from the cities they grow up in. is this the same for you, yeah, i grew up in toronto. i grew up around a lot of asian people. i listened to a lot of asian music. but also, when i was young and in high school, i used to listen to hip-hop. even now, with my music, i do a lot of singing but actually, i do a lot more rap. but i never release it as much. it’s something i’m still figuring out for the future. i tend to like singing more, it’s more fun than rapping., what are your goals moving forward what’s next for you, i would just say, the ultimate goal for me as an artist is to be able to make anything without having a financial barrier to it, you know like, just on a whim, if i want to do something - i can make it happen. i think i see myself beyond being an artist and more of a creative. i enjoy making things with the people around me and my team. they’re the ones who’ve made me who i am today. i want to grow with the people i started off with..

How has your team contributed to your journey so far? Who helps you prepare for live performances?

My team is composed of multidisciplinary individuals that work both in music and visuals. they inspire me creatively and personally because of their different perspectives and versatility in the creative arts. when you see the team you built work together flawlessly and efficiently, you begin to realize that anything in the creative world is possible and that feeling is absolutely empowering., my whole team helps with live performances whether its visuals, rehearsals, make-up, styling, photography, videography. it's a pretty extensive list but i'm incredibly grateful to have their support as their skills have gotten me to where i am today., you’re releasing ‘before’ this week, can you say anything about the new song what type of feeling or message do you want to convey to your listeners, ‘before’ is a song about the cyclical nature of love. i think when it comes to romantic relationships, we're way more emotional than rational. i feel you can get blindsided by love and although you tell yourself you won't make the same mistakes again, oftentimes you'll end up in the same place basically "being here before"., sonically, it's a fun song though. i was really inspired by edm music ‘cause i went to my first rave not too long ago so i really wanted to make a song that is unique but not sounding as serious as the message portrays., anything else you want to add for people wanting to get to know you and your music, i mean, i feel like for me, music has never been anything else for me other than an outlet, an expression of what i do. i’ve been asked like: “yo, what are your plans” or whatever and i don’t have a finite exact answer. i just like making music just for making music. i don’t think that will ever change., i appreciate the people that like my shit. honestly, i don’t expect anything. i’m grateful for people liking it. i’m just putting it out there for myself, you know if other people like it, that’s great. if they don’t, i already finished what i needed to make just for myself, to begin with., make sure to follow koven wei on instagram , tiktok and spotify to stay tuned for his next projects, related posts.

The song arrives today with xiv and biosphere's joint ten-song project, Calamity

With Origins , artists get the chance to share insights on their latest release. Today, xiv and biosphere share the inspiration behind their collaboration with Toronto-based artist koven wei. 

xiv and biosphere are getting intergalactic. Their joint project, Calamity (available to stream today, March 1st) is a 10-track journey that feels like a cross between a concept album and an atmospheric mixtape, complete with star-crossed lovers and plenty of longing.

Vocalist xiv and producer biosphere released track “On You” in October of 2021 before recruiting fellow Canadian up-and-coming artist koven wei for this next single. It’s no surprise that xiv mentions South Korean artist collective Dream Perfect Regime (DPR) as an influence — the extremely successful group has set the stage for a new kind of artist path, one that allows friends and collaborators to carve out their own niches amid a major label-heavy industry.

“When I was in the studio session alongside our feature, koven wei, I had already pictured how this music video was going to look,” xiv shares. To bring the vision to life, the crew hit the ground running, tapping into that self-starter, industrious energy to take things into the stratosphere.

Growing up in the early 2000s, movies were an integral part of our childhood. We were in a time where the internet was gaining more traction, but the influence of the ’90s was still very prevalent in pop culture. Star Wars played a big part in that. I distinctly remember spending hours on end as a kid playing the original trilogy on my dad’s old VHS player; it really was a franchise that I could never get bored of. “BLASTOFF!” reminds us of a simpler time of when we were carefree and let our imagination run wild. In a sense, its purpose is to pay homage to the nostalgia of the past.

Another iconic piece of culture from the ’90s that made its way into our childhood. Space Invaders was one of my most-played games growing up. Whenever I had to leave the house, I always made a mental note to bring two things: my Game Boy and my Space Invaders cartridge. The Space Invaders soundtrack also has its influence on “BLASTOFF!,” especially the way the synths were designed to fit the atmosphere of space.

“BLASTOFF!” uses a jazz-inspired progression, showcasing the beauty of how simple jazz chords can be turned into a full composition. Jazz has played an immeasurable role in our lives, shaping our music tastes as artists. It reminds us of our time in high school, being in the same jazz band together, and performing at events around our area. “BLASTOFF!” brings us back to the feeling of camaraderie and shows us how special music can be when it’s done through collaboration.

Rush Hour :

When I was in the studio session alongside our feature, koven wei, I had already pictured how this music video was going to look. From our previous song and video together, “OMT,” we realized that there was a very comedic dynamic between the both of us on screen.

This gave me further inspiration to take “BLASTOFF!” into a more light-hearted route similarly to the chemistry of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in Rush Hour (*cough* the laser gun scene). The slapstick-like comedy and Vaudevillian inspirations are seen throughout the video and it was definitely influenced by the Rush Hour movie binge I had a few nights before.

Dream Perfect Regime (DPR):

Dream Perfect Regime (DPR)’s work in video and music has been nothing short of inspirational. We were influenced by their world-building ability to translate their vision to their audience and this was something that we wanted to achieve as well. Everything that DPR does is tasteful and pushes the boundaries of how video and music intertwine to provide an immersive experience.

Their last album, IS ANYBODY OUT THERE? , is a prime example of this and similarly carries a space theme, albeit in a more serious manner. They serve as some really big role models to young creatives like us and show us that the possibilities in art are endless.

WEi Announces Dates And Cities For 1st-Ever World Tour "FIRST LOVE"

WEi has revealed the schedule for their first world tour!

On July 16, WEi officially announced the dates and cities for their upcoming world tour “FIRST LOVE.”

After kicking things off in Bangkok on September 4, WEi will head to Japan, where they will perform in Nakano on September 8 and Osaka on September 10.

That same month, WEi will travel to the United States, where their tour will take them to seven different cities across the country. The group will perform in Los Angeles on September 16, Dallas on September 19, Houston on September 21, Chicago on September 25, Toronto on September 27, Philadelphia on September 29, and New York on October 2.

How far are the golden ring cities from moscow.

The Golden Ring cities are located within 2-4 hours drive of Moscow. The distance by road between Moscow and Suzdal is 219 km (3-4 hours drive), between Moscow and Sergiev Posad – 73 km, nearly a 2 hour drive. However, the distance between the cities of Golden Ring is rather short: e.g. between Vladimir and Suzdal it’s only 37 km.

Which cities of Golden Ring are worth visiting?

The following cities are the most well-known and attract the most attention: Suzdal, Vladimir and Sergiev Posad. If you have more than 1-2 days, we recommend Yaroslavl, Rostov Veliky and Kostroma.

Why do people call this group of cities the “Golden Ring”?

The cities of the Golden Ring, located northwest of Moscow, are spread out in a ring shape. The term was created in 1967 by historian and journalist Yuri Bychkov who wrote travel articles under the name “Golden Ring” because his route took the shape of a ring as he travelled through these cities.
