Best Long Travel Kits for Your Toyota Tacoma

Tired of bashing your rock sliders while your long-travel buddies waft over washboard tracks and tackle deep moguls without a care in the world? Then it may be time to install an LT kit on your Tacoma.

Long travel kits aren’t for everyone. They’re certainly not ideal if you don’t go wheeling often and don’t enjoy getting a bit ton of grease under your fingernails—unless you’re made of money and don’t mind spending thousands on labor.

Owning a long-travel Tacoma means wrenching on your rig frequently, obsessively checking torque specs, being ok with squeaks and rattles seeping into the cabin, and being ready to break stuff.

They provide ample bump and droop travel, making them suitable for fast trails, rock gardens, and everything in between. In this article, we touch on the benefits of long travel kits and highlight some of our top recommendations.

Mid Travel Kit vs Long Travel Kit

Mid-travel Tacoma

Mid-travel is what comes after installing a lift kit on your Tacoma. It’s a catch-all term for when you install all the aftermarket parts needed to increase your ground clearance and suspension travel by 1″ to 2″.

This may include extended-height coilovers with longer and wider threaded bodies as well as adjustable control arms to offset any unwanted changes in alignment.

Now picture that, but a few notches above. That’s long travel.

It involves increasing not just the height of your suspension but also the width and strength—often beyond the limits of your factory suspension geometry. Unlike mid-travel kits, long-travel kits will increase your suspension travel by 3″ to 5″.

To put things into perspective, here’s what your typical LT kit consists of only at the front end:

  • Extended upper and lower control arms
  • Long-travel coilovers
  • Extended CV Axles
  • Extended tie-rods
  • Extended brake lines
  • Limit straps
  • Fiberglass fenders

Here’s what it includes at the rear end:

  • Spring under axle leaf springs
  • Long-travel bypass shocks
  • Bed cage/shock hoops
  • Axle bumpstops and strike plates

It’s worth noting that you’ll also require spindle gussets and a cab-mount chop.

The Best Long Travel Kits for Tacomas

3rd gen Tacoma long travel kit

Long travel suspension gives your wheels a much wider range of articulation, which ensures optimal traction on all kinds of off-road terrain.

In the case of the Tacoma, long travel kits are used for a variety of different builds, but they’re especially popular among prerunners, trophy trucks, and rock crawlers. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite long travel kits for Toyota Tacomas.

1996-2004 Tacoma

The 1st generation Toyota Tacoma arrived in 1996, and unlike the preceding Pickup, or Hilux as the rest of the world knew it, the Tacoma was developed for the North American market first and foremost.

As standard, the 1st generation Tacoma comes with independent front suspension with a front stabilizer bar, and a solid rear axle. A pretty good setup overall, but if you want to take things to the next level, you need a long travel kit.

Solo Motorsports

Solo Motorsports long travel kit installed on a gen-1 Tacoma

Wheel travel: 14″ (2WD) / 12.5″ (4WD) Track width: 3.5″ Tire size: 35″

We start with a decent option that is not as expensive as you might think. Solo Motorsports specializes in long travel kits, as well as other important suspension components to turn your Tacoma into an off-roading beast.

The long travel kit promises 14″ of increased wheel travel on 2WD Tacomas and 12.5″ on 4WD models. It also increases the track width by 3.5″ on each side.

Out of the box, the kit comes with basically everything you need, including extended brake lines, 1″ uniballs, and ¾ ” heim pivots. It does require fiberglass fenders, however, and the upgraded coilover suspension is not included, but Solo does sell that product as well.

Camburg Engineering (Gen 1)

Camburg Engineering LT kit for gen-1 Tacoma

Wheel travel: 13″ Track width: 3.5″  Tire size: 33″

Camburg Engineering is one of the most well-known companies for off-road components, especially for the Tacoma. Their long travel kit for the 1st-gen Tacoma is a little expensive, so you might think that it offers a whole lot of benefits compared to the one by Solo Motorsports. Not quite, it turns out.

The LT kit from Camburg claims 13″ of extra wheel travel, and 3.5″ of added track width on either side and can only fit 33″ tires. On the other hand, Camburg offers two proven options for shocks: Fox and King.

Considering Ford Raptors come with these from the factory, that’s not too bad.

Both upper and lower arms use 1″ uniballs, the kit includes extensions for the steering system, and it too requires fiberglass fenders. This kit also comes with some racing pedigree, as it’s been used on Baja rigs with great results.

JD Fabrication (Gen 1)

JD Fabrication LT kit for gen-1 Tacoma

Wheel travel: 16″ Track width: 5″  Tire size: Up to 35″

When you look at the specs of the JD Fabrication kit, it’s a complete no-brainer. Right out of the gate, JD’s 1st-gen Tacoma LT kit comes with 16″ of wheel travel, an increased track width of 5″, and it can fit tires up to 35″. All of that for a surprisingly low price.

Like the others, this also includes boxed lower control arms, and both lower and upper control arms include 1″ uniballs. It also comes with steering extensions, but JD recommends fiberglass fenders and shock mounts.

2005-2015 Tacoma

In 2005, Toyota released the 2nd-gen Tacoma, which introduced improvements across the board. It was larger, more capable, more powerful, and better equipped. Like the 1st-gen, the 2nd-gen is also very popular when it comes to off-road and prerunner builds.

Since the two have similar suspension setups, the long travel kits are very similar as well. However, the 2nd-gen Tacoma switched to six-lug wheels, so if you already have a spare long travel kit made for a 1st-gen lying around, it’s not compatible. Unless it’s for a 1st -gen Tacoma PreRunner.

Camburg Engineering (Gen 2)

Camburg Engineering LT kit for gen-2 Tacomas

Wheel travel: 15″ (2WD) / 14″ (4WD) Track width: 3.5″ Tire size: 33″ to 35″

Once again, the stalwart Camburg Engineering has the hookups when it comes to a solid, albeit quite pricey long travel kit for the 2nd-gen Tacoma.

Utilizing 1.25″ uniballs on both the upper and lower control arms, as well as a boxed LCA setup, the Camburg LT kit has some good hardware. Not to mention, extended brake lines and steering extensions.

If your 2nd-gen Tacoma is 2WD, you’re looking at a 15″ increase in wheel travel, and 14″ if you have 4WD. You can fit up to 35″ tires, and you can expect a 3.5″ increase in track width.

Again, while Camburg makes some quality hardware, this kit is plagued by the same problem that plagues their other kits as well: it’s very expensive, not even counting the expensive install labor.

JD Fabrication (Gen 2)

2nd generation Tacoma with JD Fabrication long travel kit

Wheel travel: 13″ (2.5″ track width) or 14″ (4″ track width) Track width: 2.5″ or 4″  Tire size: 33″ to 37″

Here’s where things get a little interesting. JD Fabrication offers a long travel kit for the 2nd-gen Tacoma, as you might expect. However, they offer 2 versions of the same kit, with two different track width increments.

One kit adds 2.5″ to the front end, whereas the other one adds 4″. This also leads to a slight disparity between the two kits’ wheel travel gains. The 2.5″ track width version offers 13″ of wheel travel, whereas the 4″ track width version offers 14″.

Interestingly, both kits recommend the same tire sizes, and they’re both the same price. The 2.5″ track width version will generally fit most build requirements, whereas 4″ is for extreme terrain.

Both kits also come with everything you need, including the uniballs, and an adapter kit for 8″ King coilover shocks, which is great. It’s pretty good value for money, all things considered.

All Pro Offroad

All Pro Offroad's gen-2 Tacoma LT kit

Wheel travel: 12″  Track width: 2″  Tire size: 35″ (37″ with fiberglass fenders)

While All Pro Offroad doesn’t enjoy the same sort of popularity in the Taco community as the above-mentioned, they still make some pretty quality parts, and that also applies to their long travel suspension kits.

This kit is pretty competitively priced, but it does come with a few tradeoffs. For starters, the max wheel travel you can expect is 12″, and the max track width increase you can expect from it is 2″.

While this is less than the other options, if you’re putting together a Tacoma PreRunner on a tighter budget, this kit is the right fit.

It also comes with the usual suspects, including 1.25″ uniballs and boxed lower control arms. However, the axle shafts, shocks, and bump stops are not included in this kit. All Pro does provide some recommendations, however.

2016-2023 Tacoma

The 3nd-gen Tacoma is the most modern, most recent, and most technology-packed of the 3 generations, and that means it’s also the most expensive to buy used. Unfortunately, the 4.0-liter V6 was retired for the Tacoma, but the 3.5-liter V6 that took its place was just as durable.

Toyota kept the tried and true chassis and suspension setup of the previous 2 generations intact, which means that some long travel suspension kits designed for the 2nd-gen Tacoma are also compatible with the 3rd-gen. Let’s have a look at the options.

Camburg Engineering (Gen 3)

Camburg Engineering's gen-3 Tacoma LT kit

Wheel travel: 15″ (2WD) or 14″ (4WD) Track width: 3.5″ Tire size: 33″ to 35″

Once again, Camburg Engineering makes an appearance here, and it’s business as usual. Their 3rd-gen Tacoma long travel kit offers up to 15″ of wheel travel for 2WD trucks, or 14″ on 4WD versions. They support up to 35″ tires, and they increase track width by 3.5″ on either side.

They come with everything you need in the box, including the 1.25″ uniballs, tubular upper control arms, steering extensions, and extended brake lines. Camburg also offers optional Fox coilover shocks as well as uprated bump stops.

Total Chaos Fabrication

Total Chaos Fabrication LT kit with King coilovers

Wheel travel: 11.5″ (for 2″ track width) or 12.5″ (for 3.5″ track width) Track width: 2″ to 3.5″ Tire size: 33″

Finally, we have a relative newcomer in this lineup. Total Chaos Fabrication is a reputable shop for long travel kits and all other necessary suspension components for a proper off-road build.

Similar to JD Fabrications, they offer two different versions of their long travel kit for the 3rd-gen Tacoma depending on the track width. You get the choice of either 2″ track width gains or 3.5″.

Wheel travel is right in between some of the other options on here, clocking in at 11.5″ for the smaller track width, and 12.5″ for the larger track width.

Total Chaos also offers additional choices relating to what kind of build you’re putting together, with both a Race series and an Expedition series.

Plenty of choice then, and you do get pretty much everything included. However, this kit is pretty expensive, and it can only fit 33″ tires currently.

2016+ Toyota Tacoma Long Travel Kit

Following the success of our original Tacoma Long Travel Kit All-Pro Off-Road is proud to reveal our High Clearance Long Travel Suspension kit for the 3rd Generation Tacoma!

Engineered to get 12” of wheel travel while extending the track width by 2” per side, this new Long Travel Kit has been completely redesigned to give you an additional 2 inches of ground clearance. Our long travel kit features 4130 Chromoly tubular upper and lower control arms. The Lower Control Arms (LCAs) are boxed for maximum strength and plated for extreme durability. An integrated skid plate gives All-Pro Control Arms unbeatable skid protection on the trail. Our LCAs also feature a 1” uniball that replaces the weak factory lower ball joint.

The 2” wider Upper Control Arms (UCAs) feature an industry leading 1.25” uniball for maximum articulation and vertical travel. The uniball is adapted to fit to the factory spindle using heat-treated 17-4 Stainless Steel misalignment spacers. All four control arms, upper and lower, pivot on polyurethane bushings and have built in zerk fittings for easy maintenance.

From rocks to sand and everything in between, this long travel kit goes anywhere without sacrificing comfort, quality, and performance. Our lift kits are born and developed on some of the hardest trails around, including the Hammers, Rubicon, and Moab, the All-Pro LT kit is built tough!

Additional Parts Recommended for Installation:

Chromoly Axle Shafts (not included)

Our extended heat-treated 4340 chromoly axle shafts, made by Currie Enterprises, are required for 4×4 applications. They are inserted into the factory inner and outer CVs to retain 4WD. These are not included in the kit and must be purchased separately. Please contact our sales staff if you have questions before ordering.

Timbren Bumpstops (not included)

All-Pro has teamed up with Timbren SES to offer an upgraded bumpstop for use with our LT kit, or even stock. They are made of a softer compound than their usual options which are specifically designed for increased weight carrying capacity. Timbren Bumpstops provide a smoother stop than the factory bumpstop without needlessly limiting travel. Recommended for 33”+ tires. These are not included in the kit and must be purchased separately.

Long Travel Shocks (not included)

Long Travel Shocks are required for our Long Travel Kit.  For best results, we recommend Fox 2.5 Factory Series Remote Reservoir Long Travel Coilover Shocks or the Fox 2.5 Factory Series Remote Reservoir Long Travel Coilover Shocks with DSC Adjustment.

Tire and Wheel Recommendations:

Max tire size without fiberglass fenders: 315/75/16 or 315/70/R17 (35″) With Fiberglass (37″) Max wheel backspacing: 4.75” Alignment specs: Toe = factory; Camber = factory; Caster = 2.5-3 degrees

Inexpensive Mods That Can Improve The Off-Road Capability Of Your Gen-4 Tacoma

T he Gen-4 Toyota Tacoma is a rugged and versatile off-roader with an excellent modern design and a high level of utility . These trucks are made to be used off-road and have excellent features that are designed for this purpose, but there are still some off-roading improvements that can be made to the Tacoma , regardless of your budget.

Most off-road truck mods are expensive and do not have as much of a benefit as you may want them to, but several very affordable and functional mods for the Gen-4 Tacoma significantly approve the off-roading ability of the truck without costing too much.

Affordable upgrades and mods like lift kits, skid plates, mud-terrain tires, or even simple LED lights can make a modern Tacoma an even better off-roader than it already is, drastically improving the experience of taking this truck on trails, and making it a more capable machine overall.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites and other authoritative sources.

2024 Toyota Tacoma: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

Gen-4 tacoma suspension upgrades.

The suspension system of a Tacoma (or any pickup truck, for that matter), is a crucial aspect of its off-road performance. The suspension system determines how well the vehicle handles off-road terrain, how effectively the engine power can be used by the wheels, what size tires the truck can be equipped with, and the overall ride comfort and usability of the vehicle off-road.

Upgrading the suspension of a Gen-4 Tacoma can significantly improve its off-road capabilities, providing better ground clearance, improved stability, and enhanced handling. Suspension upgrades can be affordable, depending on the components, but always make a measurable improvement to off-road ability, regardless of how much they cost.

Leveling Kits And Spacers ($50 - $500)

Leveling kits and spacers are basic suspension modifications that can be a good starting point for improving the Tacoma’s ground clearance. These kits are designed to level out the truck’s stance, which is often uneven in stock condition due to the rear being higher than the front.

Leveling the ride and stance of the truck improves ground clearance, allowing for larger tires, and improving the stability and articulation of the suspension system. These kits are relatively affordable, as prices usually range between $50 and $500. Leveling kits and spacers are an excellent choice for a modest Tacoma upgrade.

Full Suspension Lift Kits (~ $600)

Full suspension lift kits significantly improve the off-road capabilities of the Gen-4 Tacoma, and are typically installed for serious off-roading. These kits can raise the truck by several inches, creating much better ground clearance and allowing for much larger, more aggressive tires. They also improve suspension articulation, which is crucial for navigating through rough and uneven terrain.

Full suspension lift kits are more complex than simple spacers or leveling kits and provide a more comprehensive upgrade to the vehicle's suspension system. Prices for these kits start at around $600 but can be much more expensive depending on the brand and the extent of the lift.

Upgrading the Tacoma's suspension is a fundamental step in enhancing its off-road performance. These upgrades improve the vehicle’s capabilities, allow for a more customized and personal off-road experience, and are typically a great bang-for-buck upgrade for these trucks.

2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Vs. TRD Off-Road: Key Differences Explained

Upgrades for wheels and tires.

The wheels and tires used on the Gen-4 Tacoma play a critical role in its off-road performance. The right combination of wheels and tires can significantly improve traction, stability, and durability on various types of off-road terrain.

Upgrading the wheels and tires of a Tacoma is simple and can be relatively affordable, but has impressive results, especially for a Tacoma that is used for serious off-roading, or on very rugged terrain.

The typical choices for wheel and tire upgrades for the Gen-4 Tacoma are all-terrain and mud-terrain tires. All-terrain tires are great for drivers who need a versatile tire for both daily driving and occasional off-roading, and mud-terrain tires are ideal for those prioritizing maximum off-road performance at the expense of on-road comfort.

All-Terrian Tires ($120 - $750 Each)

All-Terrain tires provide a good balance between on-road comfort and off-road capability. These tires are suitable for various terrains, but their performance in deep mud is less effective compared to Mud Terrain tires.

All-terrain tires are less specialized than other specifical-application tires and are therefore usually less expensive than purpose-built tires, and are available widely, making them more affordable.

The pros of A/T tires include:

  • Quiet and comfortable on the pavement, even at high speeds.
  • Provide good traction in snow, mud, rock, and soft sand.
  • Durable for both trail and pavement use.

The cons of A/T tires include:

  • Not as effective in deep, clay-like mud.
  • Some all-terrain tires may have increased road noise with wear.

Models like the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W, Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015, and the Firestone Destination X/T are popular choices for their balance of off-road capability and on-road manners. The BFGoodrich T/A KO2 is another excellent option, known for its good performance in various conditions except deep mud.

Mudd-Terrain Tires ($200 - $950 Each)

Despite their name, mud-terrain tires are designed for diverse terrains, including deep mud and rocky trails. They have aggressive tread patterns for maximum traction in off-road conditions. These tires are more specialized and more expensive than other types of tires that can be fitted to a Gen-4 Tacoma, but they are a worthwhile upgrade for serious off-roading.

The pros of mud-terrain tires include:

  • Provide maximum traction in off-road conditions, especially in mud and snow.
  • Aggressive tread pattern for gripping rocky and uneven surfaces.
  • Suitable for severe terrain conditions.

The cons of mud-terrain tires include:

  • Typically louder when driving than other tires, producing a "hum" or "howl" sound.
  • Faster wear compared to All-Terrain tires, especially when driven hard off-road.

Options like the Cooper STT Pro Mud Terrain and Goodyear Duratracs offer excellent off-road performance with good on-road behavior. The TreadWright Guard Dog MTs are also a notable option, providing strong off-road traction with a mud terrain-like design.

The Most Bang For The Buck Trim In The 2024 Tacoma Lineup

Tacoma body armor.

The Tacoma is an impressive off-road pickup, but it is still crucial to protect the vehicle's undercarriage when taking it on the trails. Rough terrain can have many serious hazards, including rocks and debris, that can damage vital parts of the truck. Installing body off-roading armor enhances the Tacoma's durability and ensures a safer off-road experience.

Skid Plates ($150 - $1000)

Skid plates are essential for protecting the underside of the Tacoma , from rocks, debris, and other hard or sharp objects commonly encountered during off-roading. They act as a shield for vulnerable parts like the fuel tank and transfer case.

Skid plates vary in material, with some made from steel for maximum protection and others constructed from aluminum to improve protection while saving weight. A blend of both materials can be seen in setups where the front plate is steel, and the transmission and transfer plates are aluminum for a balance of protection and weight. Depending on the materials used, Gen-4 Tacoma skid plates can be very affordable, as prices start at around $150 per skid plate , and they can be bought individually.

Off-Road Bumpers ($280 - $1000)

Off-road bumpers are designed to enhance the Tacoma's clearance, approach, and departure angles . These bumpers are usually made of sturdy materials like steel and are designed to follow the truck's lines closely while offering substantial protection.

They can come equipped with additional features such as winch mounts, light bar cutouts, and tow hooks. The front bumper, in particular, can significantly improve the approach angle, allowing the Tacoma to tackle steeper and more challenging obstacles.

This simple mod can significantly improve the off-road capabilities of a Tacoma, and allow it to reach places that would otherwise be inaccessible. Off-road bumpers can be expensive, but they can be bought from aftermarket companies for affordable prices, making them excellent value for money.

Rock Sliders ($800 - $1,000)

Rock sliders protect the Tacoma's rocker panels, which are particularly susceptible to damage when traversing over rocks and other large obstacles. These sliders are typically made from durable materials like DOM steel and are often angled to serve dual purposes - protection and a step to improve access to the truck.

This mod is crucial for preserving the integrity of the vehicle's sides and can even support the full weight of the truck, proving the toughness and value of good rock sliders. However, rock sliders can be among the most expensive body armor upgrades for a Tacoma, as they are usually specially made for each vehicle, and can be difficult to mount to the truck, as they must be securely welded or bolted to the frame to be useful.

Rock sliders for this truck can cost upwards of $1000, but certain versions can be found for between $800 and $900. The price of this mod is justifiable for serious off-roaders who traverse very technical trails.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Pricing Breakdown: What You Get By The Trim

Lights and recovery equipment.

Off-roading in a Toyota Tacoma, especially during night-time or challenging conditions, demands excellent visibility and robust recovery capabilities. Upgrading the Tacoma with advanced lighting and recovery equipment not only enhances safety but also increases the vehicle's off-road utility .

Advanced Lighting Upgrades

Enhancing night-time visibility in off-road conditions is crucial for safe and enjoyable adventures. Adding advanced lighting upgrades like LED headlights, taillights, and pod lights significantly improves visibility.

These lighting options, which include products from Rigid Industries and others, offer intense illumination to light up dark trails and assist in navigation through rough terrains. These lights provide functional benefits, but they also add to the aesthetic appeal of the Tacoma, making it look more rugged and ready for off-road challenges.

Recovery Winches

A recovery winch is an essential tool for any serious off-roader. In challenging conditions, where the risk of getting stuck is high, a winch can be a lifeline . Winches like the Warn Zeon 10s have the strength and reliability needed for self-recovery. It's important to choose a winch that matches the weight of the Tacoma and to consider various mounting options, such as custom frame tow hook-mount winch trays, aftermarket winch mount bumpers, or hitch-mount winch trays.

Adding a winch increases the Tacoma's recovery capabilities but also adds to the overall off-road readiness of the vehicle, as well as the safety of using the vehicle on difficult terrains.

You can go north of potlatch and explore Skiline Dr. Lots of logging roads in that area but not well marked. In summer it isn't far to kamiah to the South where you can jump on the lolo motorway. the hard part about staying around the moscow/pullman area is that its usually all forest service, bennets, or private owned. everything ive seen growing up in moscow is they are all gated, living down in lewiston now and it seems there is quite a bit more around here to explore.

Ukraine says it has checked Russia's offensive in a key town, but Moscow says it will keep pushing

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian units locked in street battles with the Kremlin’s forces in a key northeastern Ukraine town have halted the Russian advance, military officials in Kyiv claimed Thursday, though a senior Moscow official said the frontline push had enough resources to keep going.

Russian attempts to establish a foothold in the town of Vovchansk, which is among the largest towns in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region with a prewar population of 17,000, “have been foiled,” Ukraine’s general staff said in a midday report.

It was not possible to independently verify the claim.

Six people were injured Thursday in one Russian daylight attack on Vovchansk using cluster munitions, local officials said, as emergency workers and volunteers were rescuing people affected by shelling. Among the injured were two medics.

Ukrainian authorities have evacuated some 8,000 civilians from the town. The Russian army’s usual tactic is to reduce towns and villages to ruins with aerial strikes before its units move in.

Vovchansk, located just 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the Russian border, has been a hotspot in the fighting in recent days. Russia launched an offensive in the Kharkiv area late last week, significantly adding to the pressure on Ukraine’s outnumbered and outgunned forces which are waiting for delayed deliveries of crucial weapons and ammunition from Western partners.

Russia has also been testing defenses at other points along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line snaking from north to south through eastern Ukraine. That line has barely changed over the past 18 months in what became a war of attrition. Recent Russian attacks have come in the eastern Donetsk region, as well as the Chernihiv and Sumy regions in the north and in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. The apparent aim is to stretch depleted Ukrainian resources and exploit weaknesses.

NATO’s top military officer believes that Russia’s armed forces are incapable of any major advance.

“The Russians don’t have the numbers necessary to do a strategic breakthrough, we don’t believe,” U.S. General Christopher Cavoli – NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe – told reporters after a meeting of the organization’s top military brass in Brussels.

“More to the point, they don’t have the skill and the capability to do it; to operate at the scale necessary to exploit any breakthrough to strategic advantage,” Cavoli said.

Asked whether Russia might be about to launch its anticipated summer offensive early, Cavoli said “we can never be sure,” but he added that “what we don’t see is large numbers of reserves being generated some place” which would be needed for any such offensive.

Ukraine has repeatedly tried to strike behind Russian lines, often using drones though Russia’s response to the new technology used in unmanned vehicles has improved in recent months.

Russian naval aircraft Thursday destroyed 11 Ukrainian sea drones heading towards annexed Crimea in the western Black Sea, Russia’s Defense Ministry said, according to state news agency TASS.

Kyiv made no comment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with his top military commanders in Kharkiv on Thursday and said the region “is generally under control.” However, he acknowledged on social media that the situation is “extremely difficult” and said Ukraine was again strengthening its units in Kharkiv. Zelenskyy also met with wounded soldiers and handed out medals.

“We clearly see how the occupier is trying to distract our forces and make our combat work less concentrated,” he said in his nightly video address Wednesday.

Former Russian defense minister and now the head of the presidential Security Council Sergei Shoigu insisted Russian troops are pushing the offensive in many directions and that “it’s going quite well.”

“I hope we will keep advancing. We have certain reserves for the purpose, in personnel, equipment and munitions,” he said in televised remarks.

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, calculated that Russian forces attacking in Kharkiv have advanced no more than 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the shared border.

It reckons Moscow’s main aim in Kharkiv is to create a “buffer zone” that will prevent Ukrainian cross-border strikes on Russia’s neighboring Belgorod region.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a two-day visit to Kyiv this week, sought to reassure Ukraine of continuing American support. He announced a $2 billion arms deal, with most of the money coming from a package approved last month.

Ukrainian officials say their needs are urgent, and Western partners have vowed to expedite deliveries of military hardware.

Denmark is donating an extra 5.6 billion kroner ($814 million) to Ukraine, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Thursday, with half going to air defense systems.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to consolidate ties with China with an official visit to Beijing.

China has backed Russia diplomatically over its invasion of Ukraine and is now an important export market for Russian oil and gas. Moscow also has turned to Beijing for high-tech products.
