Is the Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island Worth It?

is the maligne lake cruise worth it

Maligne Lake is one of the most stunning lakes in all of Canada, and embarking on a cruise here offers a front-row seat to this natural spectacle. Venture south, closer to the glaciers, and you’ll be treated to the lake’s captivating emerald hues.

While enjoying the lake from its shores is gratifying enough, there’s another way to experience this water. Enjoying a Maligne Lake cruise is on many visitors Jasper bucket lists. But what can you expect from your time on the water, just how much is the tour, and what’s all this fuss about Spirit Island? Is the Maligne Lake cruise worth the time and money? Let’s break it all down in this review.

About Maligne Lake & Spirit Island

Beautiful Spirit Island at Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is an incredible stretch of sheer beauty, spanning 22km from the boat docks to the majestic Spirit Island and the base of the Coronet Glacier. Spirit Island, a charming peninsula, rests 14 kilometers away from the docks and is a special place for the area’s indigenous people.

Maligne Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, stretching over 22 km. This Alberta lake is not just impressive in size, but it also has an average depth of 35 meters, reaching nearly 100 meters at its deepest points.

Beyond its sheer scale, Maligne Lake is also incredibly blue, and if you hit it on a beautiful summer day, its colors will shine through. Why is it so blue? Like other glacial lakes, as the melting glaciers flow into the lake, they leave behind rock flour, which, when hit by sunlight, creates the lake’s distinctive color.

When Does the Maligne Lake Cruise Run?

Maligne Lake

Cruises only run during the summer and early fall seasons, as the lake freezes over in Jasper in the winter . In 2024, cruises will run on the following dates:

Where Do the Cruises Depart From?

Maligne Lake

Cruises depart at the end of Maligne Lake Road. This is where you’ll find parking for Maligne Lake, a boat dock, a canoe house, a gift shop, and a few restaurants like The Lake House Café and Waffle Hut.

Maligne Lake Cruise Review & Overview

Maligne Lake Cruise

The Maligne Lake Cruise is one of the most popular things to do in Jasper , and for many, the reason to head to Maligne Lake. The hour-and-a-half panoramic cruise heads to Spirit Island 14 km up the lake. It’s around a half-hour to the island, where guests get 15 minutes off the boat for photos before the return journey unless they purchase a longer tour (we’ll get into that later).

natasha cruising on maligne lake

Visitors are guaranteed spectacular mountain vistas while cruising across cerulean water. In fact, if you take a cruise on Maligne Lake, you may even notice that the further south on the lake you travel, the closer you get to glaciers, the more the lake shows off its stunning color!

During the cruise, there will be a guide to tell you about the lake, its history, and its importance to the area. You’ll learn a bit about the Stoney Nakoda and the cultural significance Maligne Lake plays to them. There’s plenty of time to take in the views, and stepping outside the covered boat is possible to get some fresh air as you’re cruising.

Classic vs. Premium Cruise Offerings

Maligne Lake Cruise

Classic Cruise

Embark on a scenic 14-kilometer journey across Maligne Lake until you reach the serene and captivating Spirit Island. On this tour, the knowledgeable tour guides will share vibrant stories, delving into the lake’s history, early explorers, and the region’s geology, glaciology, and diverse flora and fauna.

Upon reaching Spirit Island, the boat docks, allowing guests to disembark and follow a brief nature trail leading to a viewing platform that unveils one of the most breathtaking scenes. The Classic Cruise allows for 15 minutes of free time in the vicinity of Spirit Island.

Premium Cruise

This cruise is almost identical to the Classic Cruise cruise only difference is that you get 30 minutes to explore Spirit Island and an extra stop to enjoy the views at Pincushion Bay.

The Premium Cruise also runs in the evening and is the last cruise of the day. This means you’ll have the best possible light on Spirit Island as you’ll get there around Golden Hour. If you’re a photographer, we recommend booking the Premium Cruise.

Who Runs This Experience?

Maligne Lake Cruise

The cruise is run by Pursuit Adventures, the same folks who run the Lake Minnewanka Cruise in Banff , the Banff Gondola , Jasper Skywalk , and the Athabasca Glacier Experience.

Amenities Available on the Cruise

captain of the maligne lake cruise

There are three types of boats that hold between 38 and 50 passengers. There are not many amenities available actually on the boat, and basically what you will find are wooden seats. Do your business beforehand because there is no bathroom on board. There is no food or drink offered on board, so eat beforehand.

How Long is the Cruise?

maligne lake cruise

Classic Cruises lasts around 1.5 hours, while Premium Cruises take 2 hours, excluding the loading time. It’s advisable to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. That way, you can park, check-in, and get your tickets. If you are not there when the cruise departs, your seat is subject to being given up. There is a waiting list for the cruise and peak times are booked well in advance. A $25 fee may apply to late passengers that have to be rebooked.

How Much is the Maligne Lake Cruise?

Advanced Purchase Pricing (CAD):

When is the Best Time to Cruise?

Maligne Lake Cruise

July and August provide the best chance for a sunny day in the Rockies, though it’s mountain weather, and you never know what can happen here! Cruises start running at 9am, and because mornings on the water are some of the calmest (and our favorite), we would recommend purchasing a tour as early as possible. This will also still give you excellent morning light on Spirit Island.

Is the Cruise Wheelchair Accessible?

Maligne Lake Cruise

Their facilities are accessible to standard wheelchairs in most cases. However, they have a limited supply of accessible boats, so it’s best to contact them before booking your tour at +1.888.900.6272.

Is it Pet-Friendly?

It’s best to leave your furry friends at home as they are not permitted on the boat, but pets on a leash can enjoy all the other wonders that Maligne Lake offers.

Is it Kid Friendly?

Yes! The whole Maligne Lake and Spirit Island experience is kid-friendly, and kids under 5 are free, though strollers are not permitted on the boat.

Will You Get Wet?

maligne lake cruise

It’s pretty unlikely you will get wet unless it is raining. Still, the boats are covered, and guests can step outside whenever they wish.

Do You Need to Book in Advance?

checking in for the Maligne Lake Cruise

Booking your cruise in advance is highly recommended, especially in July and August. Cruises do sell out frequently.

Hiking Trails, Picnic Spots, and Other Recreational Activities Nearby

A kayaker on Maligne Lake

Before or after your cruise, there are few things to do at Maligne Lake that may be of interest.

  • Canoe or kayak : It’s impossible to miss the charming boat house at Maligne Lake. Here you can rent canoes, kayaks, and rowboats and get out on the water.
  • Walk the Mary Schaffer Loop Trail : This is an easy 3.2 Jasper trail with only 82 meters of elevation gain near Maligne Lake. It will loop you through some beautiful forests and starts and ends at Maligne Lake.
  • Moose Lake Loop : This trail is similar at 3.4 km, but has slightly more gain at 108 meters. The trail starts at Maligne Lake and gets you to the quiet Moose Lake! It’s common to see Moose on this trail.
  • Gift Shop: The gift shop at Maligne Lake is quite extensive, and even if you don’t plan on buying anything, it’s still worth a wander.
  • Have a Meal : There are three Jasper restaurants at Maligne Lake. The Lake House Café has both Grab and Go food as well as hot food service. There’s also the Waffle Hut , which is pretty self-explanatory for their food type, and The View Restaurant . All of these dining options only operate from June to October.

Is The Maligne Lake Cruise Worth It?

Walk the Mary Schaffer Loop Trail

We have now enjoyed the Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island twice in the summer and can confidently say that the experience is worth it. It’s pretty tough to see Spirit Island any other way, unless you have backcountry camping permits and are willing to canoe in. The beauty of the lake rivals popular Banff lakes like Moraine Lake and Lake Louise . It’s certainly the most beautiful lake in Jasper , and you may even find it the most stunning lake in the Rockies!

Is the Premium Cruise worth it? The Premium Cruise gets you an extra 15 minutes to explore Spirit Island, though no one can walk out to Spirit Island. The cruise also stops and lets you soak in the views at Pincushion Bay. Most importantly, the Premium Cruise is available only in the evening, allowing you to have the best possible light on Spirit Island, which is ideal for photographers. If all these things are important to you, we recommend booking the premium cruise.

Questions about the cruise get asked often in our private Facebook group, and nearly everyone agrees that the Maligne Lake cruise is worth the time, effort, and money. Everyone also agrees, including us, to book one of the later time slots in the day for the best light on Spirit Island.

Getting to Maligne Lake

Maligne-Lake-Road

Maligne Lake is roughly 45km from the Town of Jasper, and it’s recommended that you take at least one hour to get to the lakeshore from Downtown Jasper. To get there, get on the Yellowhead Hwy and take a right on Maligne Lake Road. You’ll continue on this road until it ends at Maligne Lake. Allow either before your visit to Maligne Lake or after so that you can stop at some of the incredible sights on the way.

I suggest stopping at Maligne Canyon, as it’s a great beginner-friendly Jasper hike and definitely don’t miss Medicine Lake on your way in. Keep your eyes out for moose, sheep, and elk – Maligne Lake Road is one of the most well-known places to see wildlife in the park! Please remember these animals are wild. Never get out of your car for a photograph and observe quickly and at a distance so that they can live peacefully in their natural habitat.

Accessibility and Parking at Maligne Lake

map of maligne lake

There is parking at Maligne Lake, though during a beautiful summer weekend, the area becomes quite congested, and you might have to circle a few times before finding a place to park. There’s space to drop off elderly or disabled guests, as well as a few handicapped parking spots. The parking area is just a short distance (5-minute walk) from where you must be to depart on your cruise.

I Can Only Choose One Cruise – Lake Minnewanka or Maligne Lake?

Maligne Lake Cruise vs Lake Minnewanka Cruise

Many visitors to the Rockies can only choose so many paid experiences like this. The two cruise experiences are on Maligne Lake and Lake Minnewanka in Banff. While both are fantastic, we would tell any visitor who can only choose one to go with the cruise on Maligne Lake to Spirit Island. We explain why below.

Do You Need a Parks Pass to Visit Maligne Lake?

Maligne Lake

Yes, Maligne Lake is in Jasper National Park, and all visitors to the parks need a valid park pass. Pass prices are as follows:

Parks Canada Day Pass Rates

A  Parks Canada Discovery Pass grants you entrance to all Parks Canada destinations for a year. How long is the drive to the lake from Golden in August? I checked the drive time today but I don’t think it’s effected by winter weather

The drive would take about 4.5 hours without any stops.

Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island

Is taking a Malign Lake cruise worth it? Maligne Lake and Spirit Island are definitely bucket list-worthy destinations for any trip to Jasper National Park.

The breathtaking mountains, turquoise glacial-fed lake and tree-lined island make it one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies. And in our opinion, one of the best ways to experience these incredible vistas is to take a Maligne Lake cruise.

In fact, our Maligne Lake Cruise ended up being one of the highlights of our trip to Jasper! The cruise was very family-friendly, just the right amount of time, and we were able to learn so much about the area from our knowledgeable guides.

So, yes! Taking a Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island is definitely worth it if you are visiting Jasper National Park.

🚢 Looking for the best Maligne Lake and Spirit Island Cruise? Jasper National Park Tour: Maligne Valley, Medicine Lake and Spirit Island is the best cruise option with over 300 stellar reviews! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

On the fence about whether or not to take the Maligne Lake Cruise while visiting Jasper? We cover everything there is to know about the experience, and why you need to add it to your Alberta bucket list.

Where is Maligne Lake?

Maligne Lake is located in Jasper National Park, approximately one hour from the Jasper townsite. At nearly 23km, Maligne Lake is the longest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies and the second-largest glacier-fed lake in the world.

How Do You Pronounce Maligne?

Thought to come from the French word for malignant or malicious, Maligne is pronounced  MAH-LEEN  (not ‘Malig-nee’ or ‘Ma-line’). It is believed that the lake was given its name due to the turbulent river that flows from the lake and through the canyon and mountains.

It is also possible that early French traders gave the river and lake its name, due to the river’s treacherous confluence (or meeting) with the Athabasca River.

Things to do in Jasper - Maligne Lake with boy

How Long is the Maligne Lake cruise?

There are two Maligne Lake cruise options to choose from. The 1.5-hour Classic Cruise includes 15 minutes of free time at the world-famous Spirit Island.

If you decide to go with the Premium Cruise, it is 2 hours in length and allows for 30 minutes of free time at Spirit Island. There is also a brief stop at Pincushion Bay to soak in the incredible views.

The cruises are popular, especially during the peak season. Our recommendation is to make your reservations online as soon as possible, as dates often sell out quickly.

The Drive Up To Maligne Lake

If you are heading to Maligne Lake from the Jasper townsite, you are looking at just under a 1-hour drive. The route is quite scenic, taking you through lush forests and along Medicine Lake.

The drive is very straightforward. When you leave Jasper, take Highway 16 east for about 3 km and then take the turnoff for Maligne Lake Road.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-river

Once you cross the iron bridge over the Athabasca River, stay to the left at the fork in the road. Follow the road until you reach the Maligne Lake parking area, which is pretty hard to miss.

Our advice is to be aware of the speed limit and take it slow.

Expect To See Some Wildlife

Jasper National Park is filled with a variety of wildlife including caribou, elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bears, and wolves, as well as many smaller creatures like marmots and pikas.

And the drive along Maligne Lake road is an awesome opportunity for wildlife sightings.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Animal-sighting-Big-Horned-Sheep

In fact, chances are pretty good you are going to run into an “animal jam” on the way to Maligne Lake.

An Animal Jam is where wildlife is either blocking the road and causing traffic to come to a stand-still or, there are people slowing down to look at wildlife at the side of the road, causing a slow-down.

We lost count after seeing about 20 moose of various sizes, and several big-horned sheep on our trip to Maligne Lake.

Our advice is to give yourself extra time to get to your cruise (at least 1 – 1.5 hours if coming from Jasper), just in case you get stuck in traffic.

Things-to-do-in-Jasper-Moose-in-National-Park

And don’t forget to show these amazing animals the respect that they deserve. Give them plenty of space, stay in your car, and most importantly, DO NOT FEED the animals!

It is not safe, will make the animal sick, could get them killed, AND you can earn yourself an eye-watering fine if you are caught!

Arriving at Maligne Lake And Heading To The Dock

When you reach the Maligne Lake area, the first public parking lot is to the left, where you will find plenty of free parking. From the lot, follow the short trail through the forest to Maligne Lake.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Parks-Canada-sign

The trail will take you to the ticket office, boathouse, Lakehouse, and Historic Chalet. Head straight down to the docks, where staff will be waiting to check you in for your cruise.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Ticket-booth

It is recommended that you arrive at least half-hour before your cruise departure.

The Boat Ride

The boats used for the Maligne Lake cruises are on the smaller side. Inside, you will find two rows of bench seating, which accommodate 3-4 people per bench.

Unfortunately, this means that not everyone will get a window seat. So if sitting at the window is important to you, we suggest lining up early.

There are no strollers allowed on the boats. So families travelling with young children will either need to use a carrier or decide if the kids can manage without.

On the upside, there really isn’t much walking to do once you get to Spirit Island anyway.

The boats are completely enclosed, with fairly large windows, and are fully heated for days that are chilly.

There is also an outdoor deck at the back of the boat where you can feel the wind in your hair as you soak in the scenery.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-on-the-boat

But just a heads up, only a few people are allowed on the deck at a time. And the downside to standing outside is you will miss the commentary given by the awesome guides, as there are no outdoor speakers.

Sit back and enjoy the ride as the knowledgeable guides give you a little background on the history of Maligne Lake, as well as enlighten you on its geology, wildlife, weather, flora and fauna.

Learn how Mary Schäffer, a wealthy Quaker and artist from Philadelphia, received a map in 1907 from an Indigenous guide named Samson Beaver.

In 1908, Mary then set out on an expedition from Banff, becoming the first European to explore the Maligne Lake and valley area.

If Lake Louise is a pearl, Maligne is the entire pearl necklace. Mary Schäffer

Spirit Island

It will take approximately 30 minutes to arrive at Spirit Island, which is the turnaround point of the cruise. Passengers are then allowed to disembark and explore the area on their own.

Visitors can the short path which forms a loop from the docks to the viewing points overlooking Spirit Island.

The path is uneven at times, with many rocks sticking out of the ground. This may present a challenge to people with mobility issues.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Spirit-Island-walking-path

Spirit Island is actually a peninsula with a small grove of trees on it. It only becomes a true island for a few days in the spring when the melting snow and heavy rains cause the water level to rise.

Spirit Island is surrounded by emerald waters and is flanked on three sides by a ring of impressive peaks and glaciers forming a “box canyon” – a narrow canyon with a flat bottom and vertical walls.

🚢 Fun Fact: The colour of the water is different at Spirit Island compared to where cruises depart at the Maligne Lake docks. The water seems to change from turquoise to emerald green the further south on the lake you travel. This is due to the fact that the closer you get to glaciers, the higher the concentration of rock flour from the glaciers can be found in the water.

Will I Get Wet on the Cruise?

For the most part, the answer is ‘no’. The boats used for the cruise are covered. There may be a bit of water spray if the windows are open when the boat picks up speed, or if you are standing outside on the deck.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Spirit-Island-upper-view-point

There are only two ways to reach Spirit Island and they are both by boat. Most visitors to Spirit Island will arrive on a guided cruise tour. The other way to reach the island is by personal watercraft such as a canoe or kayak.

Just be advised, personal motorized boats are not allowed on Maligne Lake. Since Spirit Island is located approximately 14 km from the docks at Home Bay, it will be hard to get there on your own. Paddling can take about four hours each way!

Things-to-do-in-Jasper-Boat-at-Spirit-Island

The island is considered a spiritual place for the Stoney Nakoda First Nation , who believe mountains are physical representations of their ancestors.

And because Spirit Island is surrounded on three sides by the same mountain range, this very rare phenomenon makes it particularly significant to the Stoney people.

Today, the box canyon is referred to as the “Hall of Gods.”

Can You Walk on Spirit Island?

Because the Island is of spiritual significance to the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, and to preserve the area in its natural state, walking onto the island is not permitted out of respect.

When is the Best Time to Take a Maligne Lake Cruise?

The best time to visit Lake Maligne and Spirit Island is from mid-June to late October. This is when Maligne Lake has thawed from the winter and the boat cruises are able to operate.

If you are wondering when is the best time to visit the island from a photography standpoint, aim for late afternoons.

During the summer, the sun moves west across the sky and will shine almost straight down on the island around 4 pm.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Spirit-Island-lower-view-point

This magic hour gives the best photo results. But considering Spirit Island is one of the most beautiful and scenic spots in Alberta, we are pretty sure your photos will be stunning no matter what time of day you take them!

🚢 Fun Fact: Apple used an image of Spirit Island when they launched the 2014 iPad model to showcase its heightened photography capabilities.

What Amenities Are Available at Maligne Lake?

You can find restrooms, gift shops, and places to grab a bite when you arrive at Maligne Lake for your cruise. However, once you are on the boat, or at Spirit Island, these amenities become extremely limited.

Restaurants

You will find three food options when you arrive at Maligne Lake. These restaurants only operate seasonally, so you may want to check their availability if you are heading there during the shoulder seasons.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Waffle-Hut

Your options include The Lakehouse which serves grab-and-go style food, the Waffle Hut which offers coffee and decadent waffle options, and the View , which is the outdoor lakeside patio restaurant with great a la cart options.

Head into The Lakehouse where you will find a pretty large gift shop, along with the restaurant.

You will be able to find all the usual souvenirs, along with some really unique pieces by local indigenous artists.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Inside-gift-shop

Restrooms are available in the parking lot, as well as in the Lakehouse and Waffle Hut. Your best bet is to go before your cruise, as there are no facilities on the boat itself.

Once you reach Spirit Island, you will find environmentally friendly pit toilets there. But seeing as you are only on the island for a very short time, you wouldn’t want to waste it waiting to use the potty!

Other Things to Do at Maligne Lake

Aside from taking a cruise, there are plenty of other great things to do at Maligne Lake. In fact, the lake is one of the most popular recreational areas in Jasper National Park.

Rent a Boat

If you happen to be visiting during the summer months, you can choose to rent canoes, rowboats, Stand Up Paddle Boards and kayaks, for an adventure on the water.

The boathouse by the main docks rents out boats by the hour or the full day.

Boats are rented on a first-come-first-serve basis so the best chance to secure a rental is to arrive early in the morning or late in the evening.

Bald Hills Loop

Length:  15 km return loop Duration:  6.5 – 8.0 hours Elevation Gain : 780 meters Difficulty : Difficult Best Time To Go:   All Year

Can You Swim in Maligne Lake?

Swimming in Maligne Lake is allowed, but you do so at your own risk. Even though the gorgeous blue waters look really tempting, the glacier-fed lake remains extremely cold for swimming, even in the hot summer months.

Can You Fish at Maligne Lake?

Fishing on Maligne Lake is allowed, provided you have a Park pass and fishing permit, and that you are aware of current regulations.

This means you need to know the fishing limits, as well as be able to identify the various fish within the park.

There is no live bait fishing allowed in the park. Kids under the age of 16 are allowed to fish on their accompanied pass, but just be aware, their catch is included within the permit holders’ daily limit.

Maligne-Lake-Cruise-Sampson-Narrows

A daily fishing permit from Parks Canada will cost you $9.80 per person. You can also opt for an annual permit which will cost $34.30.

Maligne Lake Boat Cruise Reviews

#

A wonderful trip! The guide on the boat was both entertaining and knowledgeable. Great opportunity to take some wonderful photographs.

Enjoyed our boat ride out and back as well as walking some trails around the headquarters. Need to add another 5-10 minutes to the stop at Spirit Island. Seemed like we were rushed. Maligne Canyon on the way back to Jasper was a perfect way to complete the trip!

The Maligne Lake Cruise shouldn't be missed. magnificent scenery..... One piece of advice book your cruise ahead, boats were completely booked when we arrived. It's a long beautiful drive out to the lake but knowing your cruise time ahead reduces stress and who needs that when traveling.... Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. If your in Jasper you've got to go!!!

Great cruise, the scenes was beyond belief! So beautiful, and the guides were very informative. highly recommend.

Ultimate Guide To Visiting Spirit Island & Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is the most photographed lake in Jasper National Park and an icon of the Canadian Rockies. While nearby Banff National Park is famous for its Lake Louise , Maligne Lake takes the top spot in Jasper. If you are planning a trip to Jasper National Park, you need to add the Maligne Lake boat tour to your list. Visiting this awe inspiring lake is a once in a lifetime experience that you don’t want to miss!

History Of Maligne Lake

“Lake Louise is a pearl, Lake Maligne is a whole string of pearls.”

As with most lakes in the Canadian Rockies, Maligne Lake was already widely known among the local Indigenous population, but Maligne Lake was officially put on the map by explorer Mary Schaffer.

As with many lakes in the Canadian Rockies, Maligne Lake was already widely known among the local Indigenous population, but Maligne Lake was officially put on the map by explorer Mary Schaffer.

In 1907 Mary Schaffer, along with her companions Billy Warren and Sid Unwin, set off on an expedition to find Maligne Lake, known as Chaba Imne by the local indigenous people.

A year later the group found the lake with the help of a local Stoney man named Samson Beaver whose hand drawn map of the lake guided them to the shores of Maligne Lake.  Upon setting her eyes on the majestic shimmering blue lake, Mary Schaffer declared “Lake Louise is a pearl, Lake Maligne is a whole string of pearls”

How To Get To Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is located in Jasper National Park, which you can reach by driving the Icefields Parkway from Banff. The lake sits at the very end of Maligne Lake Road.

This road is one of the most scenic in Jasper National Park and you will want to spend some time here during your trip. While Maligne Lake is the top attraction here, there are plenty of things to see along this stretch of road. See below for other things to do in this area.

From Jasper town drive 4.5 kilometre until you reach the turn off for Maligne Lake road on the right. You’ll then turn left and continue on this road for about 44 kilometres until you reach the parking lot for Maligne Lake which is clearly signposted.

The Maligne Lake Boat House was built in 1928 by Donald "Curly" Philips.

Maligne Lake Boat Tour

Maligne Lake is not only one of the top places to visit Jasper, it’s one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies. At 22.5 kilometres long, Maligne Lake is one of the longest lakes in the Canadian Rockies and the second largest glacier-fed lake in the world.

The Maligne Lake boat tour is a great way to experience Maligne Lake & Spirit Island. It’s a great option for families or those with no canoeing experience who only have a few hours to experience the lake.

You’ll want to arrive early for your boat cruise. There are many things to see and do along the Maligne Lake Road that you may want to stop and see either before or after your boat tour.

If you have already purchased tickets ahead of time you should have your e-tickets ready to be scanned. Since there is no Wifi in the area, I would recommend downloading these onto your phone prior.

The boat tour departs from the north side of the lake just to the right of the Maligne Lake Boat House. You will want to snag a window seat for this tour – the views are out of this world! The lake opens up as you depart the docks and then draws in again as you approach  Samson Narrows.

If you are lucky you may even see Moose along the shores of Maligne Lake, when our evening tour departed there was a Moose way off in the distance snacking on the lakes vegetation.

During the tour our guides explained about the origins of Maligne Lake and the journey of Mary Schaffer. Throughout the duration of the tour you’ll be allowed to stand out at the back of the boat to really experience these breathtaking views.

Your tour boat will frequently stop, allowing you to get those picture perfect photographs. If you are taking the premium tour, the boat stops at Pincushion Bay and will slowly turn to give you fantastic views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Samson, Mount Warren and Mount Unwin.

Hall of the gods at Spirit Island on Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park.

Stop at Spirit Island

The part of the cruise that I was most excited for, is the stop at Spirit Island. Spirit Island may be one of the most visited places in the Canadian Rockies, but oh my is it a magical place! Seeing this view in person is truly a bucket list moment.

Even with the motorized boats on the lake, the tour is organized in such a way that when you arrive at Spirit Island, the experience is still so serene.

There is a short boardwalk which wraps around the shoreline with a lookout view that perfectly frames Spirit Island. This is a great photo spot to capture Spirit Island.

Spirit Island sits in a box canyon that Mary Schaffer referred to as the “Hall of the Gods” because of its sheer beauty. This iconic Canadian Rockies landmark gained popularity after a photograph by Peter Gales was hung in New York’s Grand Central Station for Kodak’s Colorama Showcase in September of 1960. Since then Spirit Island has existed in the minds of adventurers everywhere.

Walking onto Spirit Island is prohibited as it is a sacred place for the local Stoney Nakoda people. They believe the mountains are physical representations of their ancestors.

According to First Nation mythology, Spirit Island was the meeting place of two young lovers from opposing tribes. The young girl confessed of her love to her father, the Chief, who banned her from ever returning to Spirit Island. The boy continued to return to the island in the hopes of seeing her again. He eventually died on the island where his spirit is said to wander for eternity.

Spirit Island on Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park is one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies.

How To Get To Spirit Island

Spirit Island is tucked away in a small cove on Maligne Lake and is only accessible by boat. There are a couple of options for getting to Spirit Island. The first involves renting a canoe and rowing 14km up the lake, and the other is a boat tour.

During my time in Jasper National Park I opted for the boat tour as I was short on time. However, if you do have a while to spend in Jasper I would absolutely recommend trying the canoe route. This option has many benefits over the guided boat tour. Not only are you not confined to a certain time, you can spend as long as you like at Spirit Island – you can even paddle there for sunset or sunrise.

Other Activities Near Maligne Lake

What else is there to do in the area?

Take advantage of your time in this incredible area. The drive along Maligne Lake Road is not a short one and there are many things to see and do here.

If you have time after your cruise, take the hike through Moose Meadows, an easy walking loop that leads to a swampy meadow where local Moose come to hang out. I didn’t see any Moose at Moose Lake but when I returned to Maligne Lake after the walk there was a Cow Moose hanging out right in front of the Maligne Lake Boat House – she was huge!

Maligne Lake Road is one of the best places to spot wildlife in Jasper and therefore it’s important to drive slow, you are more likely to spot roaming Elk, Black Bears and Moose this way! Remember to keep your distance from all wildlife during your time here.

Medicine Lake is another amazing stop situated about halfway down Maligne Lake Road and is a great spot to watch the sunset.

Maligne Lake Road is full of scenic spots. Medicine Lake is a great place to watch the sunset.

Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park’s Most Iconic Experiences

I’ve been visiting Jasper National Park ever since I was a kid, but had never got around to enjoying one of the park’s most iconic experiences- the Maligne Lake cruise to Spirit Island.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

I can honestly say, I saved the best for last!

The scenery I saw during the Maligne Lake cruise epitomized everything I love about Jasper- rocky mountain peaks, hanging glaciers, peaceful forests, and azure coloured lakes. The views got better and better the further along we cruised, climaxing with a stop at the famous Spirit Island.

Toss in a warm, sunny day in early September, and it made for a perfect, unforgettable boat cruise in Jasper National Park. Here’s a look at our afternoon on Maligne Lake and enjoyable cruise to Spirit Island!

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise Review and Tips- Jasper National Park, Canada

Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island

After a nice picnic on the shore of Maligne Lake, we lined up at the dock near the Maligne Lake boathouse, excited to board the day’s last cruise to Spirit Island.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

Even though we bought our tickets in advance, I wanted to get there early so I could secure a window seat on the small boat. I wasn’t the only one who had that idea though, and people started lining up as soon as the previous boat departed.

Lucky for me, I got the last window seat and as we sailed away from Home Bay, I readied my camera for all the beautiful alpine scenery we’d see during our boat tour of Maligne Lake.

travelyesplease.com | Scenic Cruise on Maligne Lake - Jasper National Park, Canada

Soon into our journey, the view opened up to a part of the lake I hadn’t seen before. Since Maligne Lake is so long and narrow, it’s hard to perceive the magnitude of its beauty from the boathouse. As I was quickly finding out, a boat is the best way to see Maligne Lake.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise Review and Tips- Jasper National Park, Canada

As our cruise on Maligne Lake continued on, our guide pointed out notable landmarks, all the while sharing interesting facts and stories about Maligne Lake.

We learned about the explorations of Mary Schäffer, who “discovered” the lake after following a map drawn for her by Stoney tribesman Samson Beaver. We heard anecdotes about climbers summiting Leah Peak and even got to see some fossilized coral reef that was brought down from the mountain. I also learned that the mountains running alongside Maligne Lake were called the Queen Elizabeth Ranges, named in honour of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

Before I knew it, our little blue boat was gliding into the Samson Narrows, one of the prettiest sections of Maligne Lake. There were a few small islands, a quiet bay, and backcountry campground, but Spirit Island was still out of view.

travelyesplease.com | Scenic Cruise on Maligne Lake - Jasper National Park, Canada

As gorgeous as the scenery along Maligne Lake was, it didn’t distract me from my excitement to get to Spirit Island. I had long admired photographs of this renowned spot and desperately hoped it lived up to my high expectations.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise Review and Tips- Jasper National Park, Canada

As soon as we docked beside Spirit Island, I eagerly made my way down the short nature trail.

I was awestruck by the landscape surrounding me. Rocky mountains framed the lakeside, while Spirit Island and its distinctive sole cluster of trees pointed towards the far end of Maligne Lake.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

It was a work of art incomparable to any painting or photograph. I felt my breath quicken, then calm, as I gazed at Spirit Island, fully absorbing the moment.

travelyesplease.com | Visiting Spirit Island and Maligne Lake- One of Jasper National Park's Most Scenic Locations

I didn’t want to look away or turn my back, but was motivated to continue up the trail knowing that a different vantage point awaited me.

Once I arrived at the viewing platform, which was higher than the shore below, I re-experienced the wonder I felt just a few short moments ago. This slightly different perspective brought on a new wave of emotions and I stood there silently thanking Mother Nature for the perfect light and weather conditions for viewing Spirit Island.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

Sadly, our time at Spirit Island was way too short, just 15 minutes, and soon we were being called back to the boat. It would have been nice to sit longer with the view, considering Spirit Island is the gem of Maligne Lake.

Back on the boat, I was disappointed to be leaving so soon, but didn’t let that taint the experience I had looked forward to for so long. Instead, we stood smiling on the back of the boat, bathed in warm sunlight, and watched one of the best views in the Canadian Rockies disappear from sight.

Final Thoughts About the Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island

I’ve travelled to many far-off places but the view of Spirit Island and Maligne Lake is truly one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. How lucky that it’s only a 4 hour drive from my home!

travelyesplease.com | Visiting Spirit Island and Maligne Lake- One of Jasper National Park's Most Scenic Locations

Although the highlight of our afternoon was seeing Spirit Island, the cruise on Maligne Lake was just as enjoyable, being both informative and scenic.

I especially loved the glaciers and seeing the water change colour from blue to turquoise the further down the lake we got. It was also interesting to see how one side of the lake had rugged, rocky mountains, while the other side had mountains that were more rolling and smooth.

maligne lake cruise morning or afternoon

One downside of the Maligne Lake cruise is that the time at Spirit Island is way too rushed. With only 15 minutes, it was just enough time to walk to the Spirit Island viewpoint, take some photos, then rush down the rest of the trail back to the boat. At least the boat was small, so the island wasn’t being bombarded with people.

travelyesplease.com | Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island- One of Jasper National Park's Most Iconic Experiences

I think if we had the time and desire, it would have been more rewarding to canoe or kayak to Spirit Island, but at 28 km round trip, that’s a pretty ambitious paddle for one day!

Overall, I’m very happy with our cruise on Maligne Lake and Spirit Island was just as perfect as I hoped it would be. This experience is not only a must-do in Jasper National Park , it should be included as part of larger road trip in the Canadian Rockies.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About the Maligne Lake Cruise and Spirit Island

How long is the Maligne Lake cruise?

The classic sightseeing cruise on Maligne Lake is 90 minutes long. Premium cruises are 2 hours.

How far is Spirit Island from the Maligne Lake boathouse?

Spirit Island is 14 km (9 mi) from the boathouse.

Can you walk on Spirit Island?

No, you can’t set foot on Spirit Island because it’s considered a sacred place. The island can be viewed from a nature trail on the shoreline across from it.

Can you hike to Spirit Island?

No, Spirit Island can only be reached by boat. To get to Spirit Island, you can take the sightseeing cruise on Maligne Lake or rent a canoe. Parks Canada does not allow private motorized boats on Maligne Lake.

Why is it named Spirit Island?

First off, the name is a bit of a misnomer because it’s not actually an island, but rather a peninsula. It only appears to be an island when the water levels of the lake are high. Our guide told us that no one knows for sure where the name came from.

Tips for the Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island

Location: Maligne Lake is located in Jasper National Park at the end of Maligne Lake Road. It’s about a 50 minute drive from the Jasper townsite. You may want to give yourself more time though since Maligne Lake Road has some scenic viewpoints and is one of the best places to see wildlife in Jasper .

  • The boats to Spirit Island leave from the docks across from the Maligne Lake boathouse.

Dates of Operation: The Maligne Lake boat tours usually start near the end of May or early June, depending on when the lake thaws, and run into the first week of October.

Maligne Lake Cruise Options: There are a few different cruise options for Maligne Lake ranging from 1.5- 2 hours.

  • We did the 1.5 hour Classic Cruise that includes a boat ride to Spirit Island and back, on-board commentary from a guide, and 15 minutes free time at Spirit Island.
  • The 2 hour option is the Premium Cruise which is basically just an extended version of the classic tour (includes more time on the lake and 30 minutes at Spirit Island).
  • I personally don’t think the 2 hour option would be worth the added expense (which is why I didn’t book it), even though I wanted more time at the island. It’s quite the jump in price and more time on the lake isn’t really needed.

Best Time to Photograph Spirit Island : Of course there’s no guarantee of good light (or weather) at certain times of day, but generally in late afternoon/early evening the sun shines softly on Spirit Island.

  • We did the 4:00 pm cruise in early September and had gorgeous light at Spirit Island. I simply looked at what time the photography tour leaves on days it runs, since that should be scheduled at the optimal time for taking pictures, and booked the Classic Cruise that departed at the same time. It worked out wonderfully for us! (Note: A photography cruise is no longer offered).

Boats and the On-Board Experience: The boats that go to Spirit Island are on the smaller side (not big catamarans). There is bench seating for 3-4 people on each side, so not everyone will be able to sit near a window. For that reason, I recommend lining up as early as possible so you can get a window seat.

  • There is an area at the back of the boat where you can stand outside, but it is very small and only a few people are allowed out there at a time. You also can’t hear the commentary outside.

Maligne Lake Cruise Tickets: I recommend booking tickets in advance, especially in high-season of July and August. You can buy your tickets direct with the tour operator (online or at their ticket office), or book online through a trusted third party here .

  • At the time of publishing, Alberta residents get a cheaper rate when booking direct.

Services at Maligne Lake: At Maligne Lake there is a cafe, restaurant, gift shop, and place to rent canoes and kayaks.

Information was updated January 2024, but can change without notice. Please confirm directly with service providers.

A Perfect Day in Maligne Valley: The ultimate itinerary

What a place! There's so much to see along the road that follows a glacier valley between the Maligne and Elizabeth mountain ranges, cruising along the ever-changing surface of the Palliser Formation.

The earth feels alive and raw here—like a rare sneak-peek inside our planet. Change feels ever-present, from an eroding limestone canyon to a lake draining into underground caves.

Maligne Canyon

Here's how to spend the perfect day in the Maligne Valley:

  • Head east from the Town of Jasper on Highway 16 and then south on Maligne Road. Turn left at the Sixth Bridge sign.
  • Start at the Canyon: Get out of town straight away and have breakfast at the canyon. Grab a coffee at the brand-new Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen (opens at 8 AM in summer). Then, follow the interpretive trail to hike the canyon, exploring the erosion of ancient limestone—the ever-changing face of Earth. At times 50 meters deep yet only a few metres wide, there's high drama here. Some geologists say the canyon was once a series of caves, but they've been exposed by scraping glacier and erosion. GIve yourself 3 hours here.
  • Wildlife and Wonders: En route to Maligne Lake, take some time to pull over and explore Medicine Lake. It's the famous 'disappearing lake' that vanishes and then re-appears annually as it drains and then refills underground caves. Watch for wildlife en route. It's also place to learn about fire ecology after the 2015 Excelsior Wildfire.
  • Walk it Off: When you arrive a Maligne Lake, give yourself a few moments to soak in the scene. This is the second-largest glacier-fed lake in the world. And it's a stunner! Walk the interpretive Mary Schäffer Loop to explore some history as well. Book your tickets for an afternoon cruise (see below).
  • Lakeside for lunch: Head inside for the renowned Lakeside Luncheon at the Historic Maligne Lake Chalet featuring a menu of regionally-inspired dishes served buffet-style.
  • Wilderness by Water: Sail 14 kilometers across the stunning blue-green lake to Spirit Island, surrounded by snow- and ice-capped peaks. The Premium Cruise gives you extra time at the island and offers more chances to learn and explore.
  • Happy Hour: Back on dry land, your spirits may be soaring! Stop in the Day Lodge for a cocktail and be sure to take some time for a walk along the easy Mary Schäffer loop that goes past the historic Curly Phillips Boathouse for a view over Home Bay.
  • Sundowners: Call it a day back at the Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen where apres snacks and drinks are served next to the firepit on the patio and smokehouse-flavoured meals are served family-style inside. You'll head back to town full of stories of adventures and inspiration in this amazing place.

Maligne Lake Cruise boat tour to Spirit Island in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada feature

Sharing is caring!

Learn reasons Why you should never visit Spirit Island, nor take the Maligne Lake Cruise, while traveling through Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada with your family. …unless…

Maligne Lake and its Spirit Island in Jasper, Alberta are some of the most visited bucket-list family-friendly destinations in Canada , and in the World. Spirit Island is an iconic image of most Instagram and Pinterest representations of Canada’s most famous National Parks – Banff and Jasper – and its magnificent Rocky Mountains. Yet, is Maligne Lake really that awesome-of-a-place? This post will explain why you should never take your family on the Maligne Lake Cruise Boat Tour to Spirit Island when in Jasper. …unless…

Do NOT ever take your kids to Maligne Lake in Alberta …unless you want them to see one of the most beautiful places in the World!

the Spirit Island on Maligne Lake Cruise in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. stunning

The largest, and one of the most beautiful glacier lakes in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, Maligne Lake is famous for the colour of its turquoise water, the surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks, the three glaciers visible from the lake, and its iconic Spirit Island. Maligne Lake, with its Spirit Island, is rated one of the top Instagrammed sports in Jasper.

Spirit Island is accessible only by boat, and is located 14 km away from the Maligne Chalet – approx. two thirds of the way down Maligne Lake, at Samson Narrows. The total length of Maligne Lake is 22 km.

Maligne Lake's Spirit Island location in Jasper National Park

You can find photos of Spirit Island anytime and anywhere where there is a discussion about the beauty of Canadian nature, the Alberta National Parks, or the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

A visit to Spirit Island and the Maligne Lake Cruise is typically on every tourist's bucket list to Jasper, Alberta. It’s like: if you do not have photos of Spirit Island – you have not been to Alberta.

Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. epic

And indeed, once your boat docks the shore next to Spirit Island, and you embrace the serendipity of the landscape, the vibrant azure colours of Maligne Lake waters, the towering Rockies with glimpses of glaciers, the freshness of air… To stand there, to be there in the moment is, truthfully, mind-blowing. The real thing is way way better than you see on any photo or video ever made.

Therefore your family should NOT EVER visit Spirit Island, nor travel to Alberta …unless you want to check-off one of Canada's top must-visit bucket-list locations!

Do NOT even consider Spirit Island Boat Tour …unless you only have a few days to explore Jasper, and want to see the best of Alberta quickly!

Spirit Island of the Maligne Lake, is only accessible via a boat tour, a kayak or canoe.

Maligne Lake Cruise is the most convenient, no-frills way to explore the lake and get to Spirit Island quickly.

boarding Maligne Lake cruise boat

The boat tour is overall 90 min long, and it only allocates about 20 min per group to board off and explore the island once you get there and before you have to head back. This is of course super-short, only enough to do a quick look-out hike and snap a few breathtaking photos. And not nearly enough to fully enjoy the experience.

By the way, the boat does NOT actually dock on the island, and they do NOT allow you to hike to the actual island. Rather the cruise docks at the small peninsula from where you can see the Spirit Island. However, for ease of communication, I will be using the reference “on the Island” and “to the Island”, which would mean the docking location and the peninsula next to Samson Narrows where the Spirit Island look-out is located.

Maligne Lake Cruise waves on water

SPIRIT ISLAND VISIT TIP : make sure you use the bathroom near the Maligne Chalet Restaurant before the cruise boat leaves for the island, and do not drink more than absolutely necessary before and during the experience. The boat does not have a toilet, with the only bathroom facility located on Spirit Island. Considering you’ll only have 20 min on the island, you want to ensure you spend that time hiking, enjoying, taking photos, and NOT standing in line to use the bathroom.

Oh, and by the way, if you have a large family a boat tour can get really expensive really quickly. Travelers can find the latest Maligne Lake Cruise pricing on the tour company website .

Some families may be tempted to consider saving costs by opting in for a canoe or kayak paddle. Other than the official Maligne Lake Cruise boats, motorized boats are not allowed here – the same as in many of Alberta's Parks.

Canoeing to Spirit Island

The paddle to Spirit Island is a 14km journey, with sometimes strong winds, waves made by passing tour boats, and unpredictable weather. The best-case scenario will take you approx. 4 hours of non-stop paddling.

red kayak canoe and the beautiful view of the Spirit Island at Maligne Lake in Jasper Alberta

If you are determined or have experience in sub-alpine conditions = go for it! You can rent a canoe from the Maligne Boathouse facilities, or bring your own. The packing list for this Alberta adventure should include extra warm clothes, food, and water. …and unless you are planning to stay overnight at one of the backcountry campgrounds (there are no campsites at Spirit Island, but a few can be found within a short distance), plan to be back before the sun goes down. The upside of venturing out on your own is the unlimited time you can spend on Spirit Island and the freedom of making stops along the way to enjoy the incredible scenery of Alberta’s pristine nature.

All about camping at Maligne Lake, Alberta can be found here.

Canoeing at Maligne Lake in Jasper Alberta

In summary, if you are like most visitors to Jasper who have just a few days or a couple of weeks of vacation to spare for Alberta, and want to see all the other beauties Jasper has to offer ( Mt. Edith Cavell & Angel Glacier , Valley of The Five Lakes , Maligne Canyon, Pyramid Lake, Jasper Gondola, Athabasca Falls, Columbia Icefields, etc.) – a boat tour to Spirit Island should be a perfect solution.

Plug your ears and do NOT listen to the guides on the Spirit Island Boat Tour …unless you want to learn some history and cool facts about Maligne Lake!

Here I’d like to give sincere compliments to the Maligne Lake Cruise staff. All the tour guides that travelled with us were super fun, entertaining and knowledgeable about the history of the Jasper region.

Maligne Chalet history and exhibit of the lake geology

Apparently, Maligne Lake’s original name Indigenous name was “Chaba Imne” (Beaver Lake). The meaning of “Maligne” is from the French word for malignant or wicked . Maligne Lake and Maligne Canyon, Maligne River, Maligne Mountain, and Maligne Pass were likely seen by early french settlers as overly treacherous, hence the name.

The cruise staff told us some details on how “ the history of Maligne Lake, an iconic lake in Jasper National Park, Alberta, goes back to the beginning of the Canadian Rockies themselves …”

Maligne Chalet history - railroad workers

We learned a few facts about archeological diggings in the area, as well as some history on railroad development and natural resources exploration.

Also discussed the local wildlife and Jasper’s attempts to track its bear population. Oh, and did you know they actually do the wildlife tours where you can see Grizzly bears in the wild? Yes, they do!

Maligne Lake boathouse

Do NOT make your reservations for Spirit Island Boat Tour in advance …unless you want to ensure you have a spot!

Since the only way you can visit Spirit island is by boat, and a photo with it is on every tourist’s trip to Jasper bucket-list, you might imagine how popular the Maligne Lake Cruises are. Extremely popular.

tourists inside the Spirit Island cruise boat tour

Recent experience with Covid pandemic added extra limitations, and has reduced the tour capacity quite significantly. Therefore, if you want to make it, book in advance!

Maligne Lake cruises depart from the boathouse dock approximately every 15-30 min. Yet typically those fill out quickly, so you should book at least a few months in advance.

Good news: Maligne Lake Cruise is a part of the Banff & Jasper Collection of Alberta experiences, therefore you will be able to save quite a bit by purchasing a bundle package, which typically can include other attractions such as Banff Gondola, Columbia Icefield Adventure, etc.

Definitely do NOT check directions to Maligne Lake Cruise before you head there …unless you want to make it on time for your reservation!

Since Spirit Island is the symbol of Jasper, and probably Alberta as well, it may seem that Maligne Lake is very close to town… Wrong. If you are staying in Jasper , it will take you close to an hour to get to Maligne Chalet and Boathouse, from where the cruise boats are departing. Add extra time on finding parking, a snack stop, and a bathroom run, and you’ll find you’ll need to be on the road at least 1.5 hours ahead of your scheduled Spirit Island boat tour.

Why use sunscreen on the Maligne Lake Boat Tour? Well… …do you want to get seriously sun-burned?

girl in pink shirt next to Maligne Lake in Jasper Alberta looking at the lake

During your Maligne Lake cruise tour to Spirit Island, you would likely want to be on the boat deck embracing the beauty of it all. That is almost two hours out in the sun, although you may not even notice the time since the surroundings are simply stunning.

To make it worse, on a bright and hot summer day, the sunlight is reflecting against the water, and amplifies your family’s sun exposure.

kid's sun hat with a name signature

A sun hat (firmly fixed as to not be blown away by the wind), sunglasses, long sleeved shirt or a rashguard, and sunscreen is strongly recommended.

But please, don’t be THAT person spraying funny-smelling sunscreen while on the boat. I don’t even think they allow using sprays on a cruise, similar to Cuba and Hawaii , but I may be wrong. Here are some tips on how to manage sun exposure safely and in a healthy way, along with the most eco-friendly sunscreen brands available in Canada and USA: 9 Best Natural Sunscreens For Kids. Organic. Chemicals-Free.

Yes! For sure you can throw your garbage into Maligne Lake off the Spirit Island Cruise! …unless you want to preserve this unique place for future generations.

I mean, hell NO! Definitely do NOT throw anything into the water or leave anything behind. Packed it in = pack it out.

You’ve likely heard the phrase “Leave No Trace” at least once. What does it mean? Simply put, Leave No Trace Principles is a set of Outdoor Ethics and best practices outdoor adventurers should follow to enjoy natural spaces with the zero-impact goal in mind and to protect Mother Nature for future generations. Here is our comprehensive introduction to Leave No Trace principles : your actionable guide to exploring the Great Outdoors with your kids and pets with minimal to no impact. Leave No Trace & Outdoor Ethics – Zero Impact Family Adventures .

Smoking is prohibited when aboard Maligne Lake Cruise, on the Spirit Island, and in many places all around Jasper, Banff, all Alberta's Provincial Parks and National Parks in Canada.

Even in places where smoking is allowed, you should not leave the cigarette butts on the ground. In addition to the potential fire hazard, the cigarette butts are toxic, and along with other small litter, can be mistaken by wildlife for food.

If you are a smoker, consider bringing along one of those cool pocket smell-proof ashtrays :

pocket ashtrays smokers should take to Jasper park in Alberta

Leave your camera at home when visiting Spirit Island in Jasper,  …unless you want to take home stunning photos and videos from your adventure!

Did you know that the Spirit Island was a part of Kodak’s Colorama showcase in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal in summer 1960?

Or that Apple used an image of Spirit Island when they launched the 2014 iPad model to showcase its extraordinary photography capabilities? Here are more cool facts about Spirit Island !

If you don’t bring home amazing photos of Maligne Lake and Spirit Island, it is like you haven’t travelled to Alberta at all!

TIPS to make the best photos of Spirit Island:

Tip 1: season .

The Island is most beautiful in mid-to-late summer and early fall. And there are much less tourists in Jasper in September, hence you’ll have a smaller competition for the best photo spots when on Spirit Island. Book your Jasper National Park adventure for September!

TIP 2: Timing

Best light for stunning photos of Maligne Lake and the surrounding Rockies is mid-late afternoon. Therefore if it is in your power, when making your schedule for Jasper visit, book Maligne Lake Cruise for a later time.

TIP 3: Location

It is all about the location! There are really three cool locations you can get stunning photos from:

Spirit Island boat tour best photography locations map

#1 First : the Spirit Island Lookout. Marked #1 on the map below. Remember that you only have about 20 min on the Samson Narrows peninsula, so we suggest that the second your boat docks  – run to the first location to avoid standing in line.

the Spirit Island on Maligne Lake Cruise in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. epic

#2 Second : the lakeshore just below the lookout. From here you’ll have a similar view, yet a different “lower” perspective that can highlight the magical transition of the water colour from emerald to azure blue.

the Spirit Island on Maligne Lake Cruise in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. beautiful

#3 Third :  This should be the First really, as it is the one you can take photos from sooner. But not a big deal if you miss it.  This location is on the deck of your Maligne Cruise boat right when it passes through Samson Narrows, slows down, and starts turning around to head to the dock. From this vantage point, you can get to Spirit Island with the backdrop of the nearby mountain. If taken in earlier months – April-June – it will still be covered with snow and will look out of this world.

Spirit Island as seen from the boat cruise

TIP 4: Photo & Video Gear

If you are filming video from aboard the Maligne Lake Cruise, ensure your gear has an anti-shake feature built-in. The boat is shaking like crazy, and is being thrown in directions by the waves, including from passing boats.

Some of the cameras, for example the Fiji TX4 that we use, have this feature.

Otherwise, it may be worth it to take your GoPro action camera with you. We’ve even used our heavy-duty jaw clamp mount to attach the GoPro to the boat itself and film the whole adventure.

If you only have the phone, we recommend using a gimbal to stabilize your phone and make your videos look like those have been done with a professional camera. The gimbal we have is DJI Osmo .

Always take extra batteries on your adventure: Maligne Lake Cruise doesn't have publicly available chargers or electric plugs to add juice to your gear.

I also keep repeating again and again: always have extra SD memory cards . When exploring epic destinations like Jasper National Park, it is soooo easy to run out of space on your camera! The last time we went, we came back with over 200 GB of photos and videos!

docking at the Spirit Island location while traveling on a Maligne Lake cruise

For sure you should bring and fly your aerial drone with you …unless you do NOT want to be fined $25,000!

aerial drone flying in nature

Recreational drones are prohibited near Maligne Lake, Spirit Island, anywhere in Jasper, in most Alberta Parks.

Believe it or not, you can be reported, and the fine is quite hefty: up to $25,000 and your pilot license suspension (if you have one that is).

Don’t risk it, dont fly your drone in Jasper.

Do NOT ever make reservations for lunch at Maligne Lake Chalet Restaurant! …unless you don’t like delicious food. Or if you want to drive almost an hour to another nearest food location.

Cruise and all, considering you will be spending at least 3-4 hours near Maligne Lake, especially if your family has kids travelling with you, plan your food.

Maligne Lake has The View Restaurant, the Chalet, the Lodge, a gift shop, and a Waffle Hut.

The View – Maligne Lake’s gourmet high-end restaurant – is pricey, as you are paying the premium for the view. Yet, unlike other prime location restaurants (ex. Niagara Falls’ Table Rock restaurant), The View actually has delicious food, so you know what you are paying for. The dress code is relaxed, and befitting the free-spirit hiker-adventurer culture. Note that The View Restaurant has limited work hours and is open on the weekend only between 11 am and 4 pm. Book Maligne Lake Restaurant reservations either ahead of time, or before you board the boat cruise to Spirit Island to avoid the need to be part of a long waiting list.

Canadian Rocky mountains s seen from Maligne Lake Cruise

The Maligne Lake Chalet has a cafeteria-type coffee shop with a dining area. We are not quite sure of the hours of the dining area as there is no info on their website. Yet again, prepare for the prices: a coffee here is almost $5, although it is really good coffee.

They also used to offer an afternoon tea in the historic restored Brewster Chalet nearby. However I am not sure what happened to it due to the covid hit.

We also recommend to ensure having at least some snacks in your car, or being prepared for a picnic. What they do not tell you is that any other food location or a restaurant can be found no less than 40-50 min away.

Concluding Notes

The title of this post “Do NOT Ever Take Kids On Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island in Jasper” is obviously a joke. By all means DO take your kids on your journey through Alberta, to Jasper, to Maligne Lake, and definitely take your whole family on a boat tour to Spirit Island! It is important to expose our kids to the pristine virgin beauty of our Mother Nature while we still can.

Embark on a Maligne Lake Cruise to Discover Spirit Island

Embark on an adventure: maligne lake cruise to spirit island.

Taking a cruise across Maligne Lake to visit Spirit Island is one of the main activities to do around Jasper. Embarking on the Maligne Lake Cruise to discover Spirit Island is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are multiple options to visit Spirit Islands. One is by canoe, so you can do it at your own pace and potentially spend the night near Spirit Island. However, the most famous one embarks on the Maligne Lake Cruise to discover Spirit Island. This trip lasts for 1,5 hours and costs around 70 CAD (around €50) per person. On a holiday, as In Between Travels reflects, I try to only build in experiences in my itinerary that are good value for money. However, I’ve heard so many amazing stories, and the experience was recommended by many, that we took the guess. And it was well worth it! This article shows you why it is worth the trip and the money.

Be sure to book your tickets beforehand online (here) , as this guarantees you a spot on the cruise. We were there in shoulder/low season and didn’t do this and this meant we had to wait a bit for the next tour where tickets were available.

|| Walking around Maligne Lake

It is not just the Maligne Lake cruise that is worth doing, the Maligne Lake itself is also one pretty area. Take pictures of the Maligne Lake boat house, stroll around the lake (the Mary Schaffer Trail), or take for example the Moose Lake Loop (2.7 km) to see a little bit more of the area. The area around Maligne Lake is famous for moose. The picture below shows one walking around the parking lot (I was at the toilet at the parking lot at that time and didn’t even realize the moose was passing by!).

The cruise costs you 70 USD and the experience will take approximately 1,5 hours. The cruise towards Spirit Island takes around 35 minutes, after which you get to spend 20 minutes on the island before you spend the other 35 minutes on the way back. The cruise is done on a little boat, where you have a small back area where you can stand outside to enjoy the views. The lake is quiet, so luckily, the ride wasn’t bumpy at all.

|| Explore Spirit Island

There you are, after 35 minutes you’ll arrive at Spirit Island. You can’t access the island itself to preserve its state, but the views on the island are probably even better. There is a little loop that brings you a bit higher up for a different view.

I hate to say it, but yes, of course, you are there at the same time with the rest of the boat, and most of the time a second boat is arriving at the same time. However, the number of people on the cruise still leaves enough personal space to shoot some good pictures. Would I say the 20 minutes you have on Spirit Island are enough? Well, I had seen the place as there are not many ways to go. However, the area of course is wonderful so just being able to relax, sit down and enjoy the view would have been great.

Spirit Island, Canada

|| Visit maligne lake and Spirit Island by Canoe

In case you want to stick around a little bit longer or if you want to avoid the crowds, it is possible to rent a canoe at the Maligne Lake Boat House and paddle Maligne Lake – down to Spirit Island – yourself. Renting a canoe will cost you 200 CAD for a day. Boats are limited, so get there early in the morning. You can also consider renting a canoe somewhere around Jasper instead of Maligne Lake and take it there yourself. Paddling from the boat house towards Spirit Islands covers a distance of around 16 km.

Some camping spots on the sides of the lakes only can be reached by canoe. When I would have the chance to visit Canada and the Canadian Rockies, I would love to visit Maligne Lake again but take that camping and canoeing experience for a more off-the-beaten-track adventure. (Book the camping spot well in advance though!) With a canoe, you also have the opportunity to paddle past Spirit Lake, so I’ve read, where that motorized boats aren’t allowed. Fisherman’s Bay seems a good place to spend the night, after some online research.

|| The Best Hikes around Maligne Lake

  • Marry Schaffer Loop (3.2 km)
  • Moose Lake Loop (1.4 km)
  • Bald Hills (10.4 km) - Favourite
  • Opal Hills (8.2 km)

From Maligne Lake, there are a couple of hikes you can take. Take the Marry Schaffer Loop around the lake (3.2 km) or the Moose Lake Loop (1.4 km). Next to that, the two more difficult hikes into the mountains called Opal Hills and Bald Hills are starting from Maligne Lake. Opal Hills is a hike that is 8.2 kilometers and the hike towards the Bald Hills is 10.4 kilometers. Both will take you 4 to 6 hours and can be combined with your Maligne Lake Cruise in the morning.

Long story short: the Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island is an experience you won’t easily forget. Looking for more things to do in Jasper National Park? Check out this article with the 10 top hikes to take in the park.
