What reviewers want you to know

Positive highlights.

  • Easy to navigate, great customer service , great rates!
  • A great website to search the flies and very smooth booking process .

Critical highlights

  • Charges to my credit card are fraudulent and were not accepted e.g.
  • Site is confusing when choosing seat selections for departure and return.

“Hey, so very good and helpful service you guys got...”

Hey, so very good and helpful service you guys got here, but, please, fix your filters as this particular one filter "close/near dates of departure" that is constantly on and active when you make new search is pretty annoying))... Thanks and Best Regards! You Are Doing a Great Job Keep Doing It And Right On!

“You lie and steal, why can I not make any changes or...”

You lie and steal, why can I not make any changes or cancellations? Your bot system goes on an endless loop to avoid addressing the issue and your "travel experts" can't even manage to do even one thing aside delay further. This whole experience has left me feeling like this company is a total scam. I'm having my bank cancel your charge and issue a fraud claim.

Top Ten Reviews Verdict

An average travel site, OneTravel doesn't bring more discounts than the bigger players in this area. We do like the hotel theme filter, though.

Good hotel search options

No cancellation fees

Prices are rarely the cheapest

Why you can trust Top Ten Reviews Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

OneTravel lets you book flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and vacation packages. You can also search for flights under different price caps based on your budget. This price cap search is a great feature for international flights, which typically cost over $1,000.

OneTravel has average prices compared to the best online travel sites , but it adds a per-person processing fee, which may tip the total price into a range that is more than what some travelers can afford. If your plans fall through, you may find a hefty cancellation fee on your bill, which is even higher for canceled international flights. However, OneTravel will waive these fees and others (when permitted by airlines or other suppliers) for active military members, senior citizens, disabled and bereaved travelers. If you're booking a vacation package for your family, we recommend you book with Expedia because it makes booking packages easier than other sites.

One of the features of OneTravel's hotel search is its theme filter. With it, you can search for hotels under a wide variety of themes, such as family, pet-friendly and romantic, golf or and spa vacations. Pictures and descriptions can be deceiving; OneTravel posts TripAdvisor user reviews so you can read a range of guest experiences and opinions.

If you plan to travel internationally but you're not sure what you'll need, the visa and passport assistance feature is a great tool. This handy feature lets you select your country and state of departure, plus your destination and reason for traveling, like business, pleasure, transit or journalism. Results tell you whether a visa or passport is required to enter your destination country and how to obtain these documents before you leave.

OneTravel has several ways you can reach its customer support department. The FAQs section is massive, so if you have a simple query, it's likely you'll find it there. This section covers flights, cars, hotels, billing and payment, and general questions, to name a few. You can't email questions to OneTravel, but it's one of the few online travel services with a live chat feature.

OneTravel offers some of the lowest base prices, but you want to be absolutely sure of your travel plans before booking to avoid the hefty cancellation and itinerary change fees. These types of fees are standard for any online travel site that collaborates with airlines and other travel service providers, but the costs add up quickly. This online travel agency offers plenty of promos and coupons to knock down the service fees and lower the prices even more. If you're looking to redeem travel points for your vacation, we recommend you book using CheapTickets because you can redeem hotel and airline points and also get points through CheapTickets' own point system.

Middle-man Company that Overcharges on Hotel Bookings.

When I rebooked an existing hotel booking to include an extra person in a room, they tacked on a $120 "platform fee." Afterward, I received a notification that I had a booking on booking.com, which, to my surprise, cost $120 less than what they charged me. They also made my booking non-refundable, I would have had to pay $150 to walk out of the deal, which forced me to stick with it. It seems like they're taking hotel bookings, making the bookings themselves on bookings.com, and then charging customers a $120 premium. This company is a middle-man that overcharges bookings. Avoid them at all costs and use Priceline or Booking.com instead to book hotels yourself without unexpected fees.

Are One Travel and CheapoAir connected or the same company? Bad news about Cheapoair I am afraid. There are topics all over Tripadvisor about them. Just scroll up to the search box just above your question and type in Cheapoair, then from the drop-down menu select "All Forums". That will display numerous topics full of complaints. It's also a regular topic on the Air Travel Forum.

Please tell your husband that just because something is advertised on TripAdvisor it does not mean that it is guaranteed, or approved by TripAdvisor. It is just an advertising platform, and when you make bookings you click through to another website, and are bound by their terms and conditions.

Gate 1 Travel Review: Are Their Organized Tours Worth It?

Gate 1 Travel Review: Are Their Organized Tours Worth It?

Have you ever wanted to take a trip where everything is planned for you? I was in the same boat when I found Gate 1 Travel, which offers escorted coach tours all over the world. If you're wondering whether this is the route for you, I did all the work to give you the inside scoop!

one travel ratings

One of the best parts of traveling is getting to decide where you want to go and what you want to see. However, it can also be the most stressful part of traveling.

How do you make sure you see everything you want to see, get the right hotels, and eat at the right restaurants, all while staying on budget? One option I often think about to help alleviate that stress is to book a tour that covers all the nitty-gritty details!

When you're thinking about organized travel, you'll come across so many tours and guides that'll it'll hurt your brain.

One of those is Gate 1 Travel. So, the real question is does it beat out other options when booking tours?

I wanted to find out so that you'll have the essential info on its tours, prices, destinations, and more! This way you'll be making a decision with lots of valuable knowledge.

Gate 1 travel logo

What Is Gate 1 Travel?

If you're not a fan of traveling with strangers, my advice is to go with a travel agency or plan your own trip. Don't go with Gate 1 Travel or other travel groups. Plan and go discover on your own instead with Pilot!

That's because you will definitely be exploring with a group if you book with with Gate 1 Travel.

Numbers fluctuate, but if you're keen on staying in a smaller group, be sure to check out Gate 1's Small Group tours . Also known as Discovery Tours, there are no more than 22 travelers on these trips, so you won't have to worry about there being too many people with you.

‍ Discovery Tours also allow you to get up close and personal with the country you're visiting in a way that often isn't possible in larger, escorted tours.

How Large Are Gate 1 Travel Groups?

If you're not a fan of traveling with strangers, my advice is to go with a travel agency or plan your own trip. Don't go with Gate 1 Travel.

Numbers fluctuate, but if you're keen on staying in a smaller group, be sure to check out Gate 1's  Small Group tours . Also known as Discovery Tours, there are no more than 22 travelers on these trips, so you won't have to worry about there being too many people with you.

How Do I Book a Tour?

If you're interested in booking a tour with Gate 1 Travel, you'll first need to make an account.

You can head to the login page to do this. Once you've done that, you can start booking!

You'll select your tour region, followed by the country you want to visit and the tour that appeals most to you.

Choose your departure date, and decide whether you want flights included. You can then select those flights and any optional tours you may want to do during your trip.

What's Included in Gate 1 Travel Tours?

When booking a tour with Gate 1, you want to know what's included.

Something I liked to see is that every trip offers a "land only" and "air & land" price, so you can decide whether to have your flights included. Flights do only go to and from select cities, depending on your tour dates.

Escorted tours will include the following:

  • Accommodation for the nights of the tour
  • Hotel taxes and service charges
  • Transport between cities
  • Certain meals (what's included will be outlined in the tour details)
  • Sightseeing per the itinerary in an air-conditioned coach with a guide!

Not included is airfare for land-only trips, any visa-related fees, and optional extras you may decide to add to your tour.

Gate 1 Deals

Every traveler loves a good deal, and Gate 1 offers some great affordable vacations. It's actually one of the best bundle travel deal sites out there!

By heading to the company's Featured Specials page, you'll get to see Gate 1's flash deals, as well as any last-minute deals for upcoming departure dates. They also have a featured destination sale which will change from time to time.

To access the deals, you'll need to use the promo code listed on these pages, and then you're on your way to saving on your next trip!

From its website, you can also sign up to receive weekly deals via email. You never know what you'll get in your inbox!

How Do I Contact Gate 1 Travel Customer Service?

Whether you have a question or a complaint, it's never a bad idea to know how to contact customer service.

Gate 1 Travel is currently experiencing a high volume of inquiries, but you can still fill out a  form  via the website to send an online inquiry.

If you're traveling soon, you can get ahold of the team by phone. The company has 24-hour assistance line can be reached in the US by calling 215-572-7676.

Cancellation Policy

If you find you can no longer join your Gate 1 Travel tour, how can you cancel your trip?

Once you've made at least a partial payment on your trip, you have to submit a cancellation request in writing via the contact us page.

Cancellation fees will then be applied based on how much time remains before your trip and will be applied as a percentage of what has already been paid.

Customer Reviews

Overall, travelers seem to be satisfied with Gate 1's services and its tours.

Many of the complaints speak to packages booked with flights and how flight cancellations or changes have upheaved entire trips. Others have also mentioned the mismatch of travel credits promised versus ones they actually offer.

Other travelers have complained about Gate 1's customer service as being difficult to reach and not entirely helpful. It sounds like quite a few individuals had a tough time getting a full refund for their trip, even with travel insurance, when booking with them.

Whether it's that explanations can't be given, refunds are not fully issued, or travelers are sent in circles, it sounds like customer service is a hit or miss.

Other complaints have also touched on the itineraries being too packed to truly enjoy what you're seeing or to feel rested enough for them.

Is Gate 1 Travel Worth It?

After all my reading, my advice is to proceed with caution. Here's why.

My first impression when I got onto the website is that this is mainly targeting an older audience, with their branding outdated to the 2000s. That's not a judging criteria, but just a red flag in my opinion.

While Gate 1 Travel offers a lot of packaged tours, the volume of travelers who have had their trips impacted by flights booked through Gate 1 is concerning.

Instead, I would avoid the flight risks by opting for land-only tours. If you go this route, Gate 1 does offer tours all over the world, so it's a good place to at least browse through when you're trying to make a decision.

They also offer other kind of tours like independent vacations, European river cruises, and customized international vacation packages, but it's honestly not for me. The price is way too expensive and I can frankly plan it myself.

They also seem to charge a bit more than the actual ticket for many attractions, which to me seems like a dealbreaker unless it is actually hard for me to get the travel reservations myself.

In Gate 1 Travel's benefit, they sure do have tons of locations. From Paris to Peru, From Ecuador to Budapest, their tour packages extend to many destinations around the world. They also offer discount travel packages there and here, so that's something to consider for all you deal-seekers.

Keep in mind that some comments were made about the itineraries being a bit packed. So, if you're more of a relaxed traveler, I would be very careful going with Gate 1 Travel.

That being said, if you want to do and see as much as humanly possibly, Gate 1 could be the tour company for you!

If you like the idea of booking a tour but still aren't convinced that Gate 1 Travel is right for you, make sure to also check out companies like EF and Intrepid !

Our Rating: 3.1/5

  • Tours all over the world
  • Small group options for more immersive experiences
  • Includes accommodation, and guided coach tours
  • Options for smaller group tours
  • Flight cancellations can result in trip cancellation
  • Poor customer service

Why Capital One Travel should be your only stop for booking (and enjoying) your next trip

Ashley Onadele

No matter how often you travel or how savvy you are, planning and booking any trip can be an overwhelming task. Throw in two kids under 5 years old (like I have), and it's almost inevitable that you'll overlook something. So I'm always looking for the most efficient way to arrange my travel, including which card and program will offer me the most value.

That's where Capital One Travel comes in. It is more than just a booking platform; it has all the tools I need to help me travel smarter — which is why it's the first place I go when it's time to plan a trip.

See how Capital One Travel can transform your booking and travel experience.

In fact, Capital One Travel delivers value at all stages of travel — from the initial planning phase to the booking process to the travel experience and even back home, where all of the rewards you've earned can jumpstart your next trip. Sure, you can purchase flights, reserve rental cars and book your accommodations through Capital One Travel. But it also tells you if you're getting a good price on your flight, and if not, you can set up alerts for when it's time to book.

If you have a Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , you get unlimited access to Capital One Lounges. Plus, there's a new culinary-focused airport concept — Capital One Landing — coming to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and New York City's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in partnership with legendary Chef José Andrés. And the recently-announced Premier Collection will offer luxurious accommodations and value-added benefits for Venture X cardholders.

In short, Capital One Travel makes it easy to be a smarter traveler while earning valuable rewards.

Keep reading to see everything you can enjoy with Capital One Travel .

Experience a better way to book travel

one travel ratings

Does Capital One Travel finally answer the question, "When's the best time to book airfare?" Each situation is unique, but one thing's for sure: Capital One Travel makes sure you have all the information you need to feel confident both before and after booking your flight.

With its proprietary price prediction technology, Capital One Travel shows you a color-coded calendar as soon as you search for a flight, allowing you to see which dates have the lowest prices to fly to your desired destination. If prices are still high, there's no need to constantly monitor them yourself — you can create price alerts that'll notify you when it's time to book.

And it gets even better thanks to Capital One Travel's price drop protection , another tool automatically available to cardholders at no extra cost.

The premise is simple yet so valuable. If Capital One Travel recommends that you book a flight (or a price alert tells you to book), it will keep watching your itinerary for 10 days after booking. If the price drops during that time, Capital One Travel will automatically issue a credit for the price difference — up to $50 per ticket.

These features — price alerts and price drop protection — aren't found with any other card issuer's travel portal.

one travel ratings

When it comes to hotels, you can trust that you're getting the best price as well. Capital One Travel utilizes proactive price matching with online travel agencies like Expedia. However, if you still somehow find a better price at the same hotel within 24 hours of booking, Capital One Travel will match the better price. This even extends to flights and car rentals.

But giving cardholders these unique, innovative insights and tools is just part of what makes Capital One Travel so valuable.

Earn extra rewards on travel

Cardholders can look forward to earning up to 10 miles per dollar when booking travel with Capital One Travel (depending on which card they hold). Capital One Venture X cardholders earn 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars and 5 miles per dollar on flights. All other Capital One rewards cardholders — including the Venture, Savor, Quicksilver, Spark Business and Student product suites — earn 5 miles (or 5% cash back) per dollar on hotels and rental cars.

Once you've earned those valuable rewards, you can redeem them directly through Capital One Travel for future trips, or you can transfer them to one of over a dozen airline and hotel partners . Alternatively, Venture X and Venture cardholders can choose to cover recent travel purchases by redeeming their miles at a rate of 1 cent per mile. Even when I pay for my trip with Venture X, I could use the miles that I earned through Capital One Travel to then offset all (or part) of my travel purchases.

And then, during your trip, you can look forward to starting your vacation early — by kicking back and relaxing at a Capital One Lounge.

Start your vacation off right with special lounge access

one travel ratings

There's no need to wait until you land at your destination for your vacation to begin. Venture X cardholders get unlimited complimentary access (plus two guests) to over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide, including Capital One Lounges and the Partner Lounge Network. Meanwhile, Venture cardholders receive two complimentary visits per year to Capital One Lounges or 100+ Plaza Premium lounge locations .

A Capital One Lounge is now open at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), and two more locations are coming soon to Denver International Airport (DEN) and Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD).

And these aren't just your run-of-the-mill airport lounges.

Boasting a contemporary, light and airy layout, a Capital One Lounge features a premium dining experience, including health-conscious food options that are plated small bites served via dining stations rather than buffet-style. All food is freshly prepared with a focus on locally sourced ingredients — including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

For travelers in a hurry, there's a whole section of grab-and-go items — including artisanal nut mixes, fresh fruits, juice shots and rotating warm selections like breakfast sandwiches in the mornings or fresh-from-the-oven cookies in the afternoons. These sustainably-packaged selections are perfect for those without long layovers who still want some terrific food while traveling.

one travel ratings

If you can spend some time in the lounge, you'll enjoy a fully stocked bar with craft cocktails on tap, local beers and hand-selected wines. A full-service coffee and espresso bar featuring La Colombe cold brew on tap appeals to even the most discerning coffee aficionados, while a custom, six-tap system of artisanal sodas and flavored waters keeps all members of the family happy.

Beyond these extensive food and beverage offerings, travelers can also take advantage of relaxation rooms, Peloton bikes, nursing rooms and showers where they can freshen up before (or after) a long flight.

But that's not all.

Last month, Capital One announced a new offering as it continues to rethink the airport experience. Capital One Landings , a new chef-driven concept, will focus on bringing an elevated dining experience to the heart of the terminal. In partnership with the award-winning José Andrés Group, Capital One Landings will offer top-notch food for travelers on their way to the gate. The first locations will debut in Terminal B at LGA and at DCA in the near future.

And while you may never want to leave the comfort of the Capital One Lounge (or Landing), the luxury travel benefits continue upon arrival at your destination.

Elevate your hotel stay with the Premier Collection

one travel ratings

In addition to Capital One Landings, the issuer continues to raise the bar for what travelers can expect with its Premier Collection of hotels and resorts, offering cardholders premium benefits with every stay. Capital One hand-picked these properties for their unparalleled service, immersive culture and authentic character — all to deliver exceptional experiences to travelers.

The Premier Collection will be available to Venture X cardholders later this year and will include hotels from all over the world — from city stays to villas and private island retreats. Cardholders will enjoy benefits like a $100 experience credit, daily breakfast for two, complimentary Wi-Fi and more. Venture X cardholders will also earn 10 miles per dollar spent on Premier Collection properties booked through Capital One Travel .

Bottom line

The Capital One Travel ecosystem continues to grow. With top-notch credit cards, an outstanding booking experience, luxurious lounges, new airport dining options and premium hotel perks, Capital One deserves a place at the top of every traveler's mind.

You can book your flights with confidence thanks to price alerts and the color-coded calendar. And you'll get a price match guarantee on all bookings — all while earning Capital One rewards to use on future travel.

The Capital One Lounge iat DFW will be joined by two more locations in 2023 (IAD and DEN), and as a complement, the issuer will debut its culinary-focused airport experience — Capital One Landing — at LGA and DCA to provide fresh, unique and inventive food and drinks for travelers in the heart of the terminal.

Plus Venture X cardholders have even more to look forward to with the Premier Collection, Capital One's curated set of luxury hotels and resorts.

So what are you waiting for? Join the many Americans (and TPG staffers ) who are using Capital One Travel to elevate their trips — and unlock incredible value along the way.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Ickle Bubba’s Altima pram as reviewed by a Bugaboo mega-fan

We put the brand's new 2-in-1 buggy to the test

ickle bubba pram

Don’t get me wrong, I am obsessed with my slick and smooth-riding Bugaboo Fox 5, but I’ve been looking for a second lightweight pram that easily folds to take in Ubers and on public transport ever since I split my Cesarean wound open carrying it down the stairs solo.

Yep, space is tight in London, and most tube stations are sans lift – which is why so many parents are seen strolling around with teeny tiny YoYo prams ( we’ve reviewed one here ). Visit any nursery in my area and you’ll see these nifty buggies folded and hung waiting for pickup time.

But while the YoYo has its appeal, I personally prefer something sturdier with all-terrain capabilities, something that can handle my entourage of miscellaneous mummy 'essentials' that seems to grow by the day. I landed on the Ickle Bubba Altima , with its big wheels, decent proportions, capacious shopping basket and one-handed fold, thinking it might serve as a hybrid of these two hero models. After rigorous testing, the end result was surprising – here’s my honest review of the Altima 2-in-1 pushchair.

Ickle Bubba ALTIMA ALL IN ONE TRAVEL SYSTEM

ALTIMA ALL IN ONE TRAVEL SYSTEM

What’s so great about the Ickle Bubba Altima 2-in-1 pram?

There’s a lot to love about this buggy. It’s sturdy and stylish, and really reasonable compared to similar models on the market. Undeniably nice to look at, it comes in on-trend colourways (although since I didn’t love the rose gold accents on the black, I opted for sage-green with gunmetal hardware). Every detail has been well thought out for the wellbeing of mum and child, from the mesh peekaboo panel to the privacy screen and big shopping basket. Here’s what I loved in a nutshell:

  • It feels lighter than your traditional 'big' buggy, but has the wheels can still withstand different terrains while protecting baby from bumps on the way.
  • Serves from newborn to age four, up to the weight of 22kg – simply switch from the newborn chassis to the seat – so you won’t need to invest in two models.
  • It's a lot more affordable than other buggies with similar capabilities.
  • The retractable hood can unzip to create a sun visor, which is a lot more effective than a cumbersome parasol.
  • The hood also has a mesh panel for checking on baby when in world-facing mode.
  • The seat unit features three recline positions and two leg-rest options.
  • Folded in seat mode, this pram has very slimline proportions.
  • There's a large shopping basket beneath that's machine washable.

Ickle Bubba Altima cons

While there weren’t many cons to this buggy, what attracted me to it in the first place actually turned out to be a sticking point: the Ickle Bubba Altima doesn’t quite deliver on that one-handed USP. The brand’s instructions seem simple enough, but the process is fiddly to say the least. It took me quite a few goes, not to mention assistance from three different family members, to finally master unfolding and opening out. Although a lot shorter than the pro list, here are the buggy’s main cons:

  • The one-handed fold feels quite complicated – mums, make sure you practice before you leave the house. It's also worth noting that it’s only available when your baby has reached the six month stage and you’ve switched the carry-cot for the seat unit.
  • While this buggy is lightweight considering its sturdiness, the base still weighs around 5kg, so if you need something easy to travel with you might want to consider the aforementioned YoYo .

Can the Ickle Bubble Altima pram be parent facing?

Ickle Bubba has thought of everything when it comes to seating options for your child. Once your little one has outgrown the newborn chassis, you can switch for the seat and tailor to your liking, choosing between parent- and world-facing, as well as three different recline positions, which makes naps out and about much easier.

How to fold the Ickle Bubba Altima:

This I'm afraid is a bit of a tricky one, and I can only recommend having quite a few practice sessions at home before taking your Altima for a spin. Here's a video aid to help you perfect the art:

Can you use Ickle Bubba Altima before six months?

Absolutely. The Ickle Bubba Altima is designed for use from birth and has a really comfortable and protective chassis. Depending on your baby's weight and height, they could stay in this from ages four-six months.

Can you wash the Ickle Bubba Altima?

Unlike the BabyZen YoYo, the Ickle Bubba cannot be machine washed. Honestly, I don't see this as much of a problem when it comes to wipe-clean shell fabrics like this. So long as you sponge dry stains pretty promptly after they appear, no matter how messy the toddler, you should keep your Altima looking good as new. The basket beneath is the one part that is machine washable, should you experience any shopping or – God forbid – nappy bag spills.

Is the Ickle Bubba Altma travel system worth it?

Whether you’re investing in a buggy, or you're a first time parent trying to tick off that never-ending ‘to buy’ list, it’s always worth taking a look at travel systems to save a bit of money. In the case of the Ickle Bubba Altima , if you pay £200 more (the 2-in-1 pram RRPs at £499) you’ll get a Stratus Car Seat with ISOFIX Base included, as well as a load of great accessories thrown in like a cup holder, rain cover, changing bag and mat. This system also comes with the adaptors needed to fix the car seat to your Altima buggy’s frame (although it is recommended to never leave your child in their car seat for longer than two hours at a time) so you don’t have to wake them when you’re out and about.

While this travel system is undeniably good value, we always suggest doing your research on individual items. There’s no use in settling for a car seat that doesn’t meet your child’s needs just because it came with your buggy of choice.

Requires excellent credit

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has an excellent rewards rate, access to airport lounges and hundreds of dollars worth of travel credits that can make up for the $395 annual fee ( see rates and fees ).

To optimize the card, you’ll need to book on the issuer’s online travel portal. If that suits you, the card can stand up to the stiff competition in the market for premium travel credit cards. And despite its many features, the card is overall easier to understand than most premium cards, which can be baffling for newcomers.

You won’t get brand-specific perks, like free checked bags with a particular airline or a free hotel night at a hospitality chain, as you do with co-branded airline and hotel credit cards. But it offers the flexibility of the popular Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , while adding a raft of perks that just might give it the X-factor to make it your ideal travel companion.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : Basics

Card type: Travel .

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Bonus miles on travel spending are expected for a higher-end travel credit card, and this one has those if you’re willing to use Capital One’s online travel-booking site:

Unlike some others in its category, this card is rewarding for everyday spending, too. It earns 2 miles per dollar spent on purchases outside those bonus areas. That’s an excellent rewards rate because so much spending falls outside the usual bonus categories.

If it’s your top-of-wallet card, you’ll rack up miles quickly even if you’re not booking a lot of travel.

Generous sign-up bonus

Sign-up bonuses can change over time, especially with travel credit cards. But the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has an excellent one: Earn 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

That's enough to cover the annual fee for nearly two years. The downside is you’ll have to put a lot of spending on the card first. Spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months is an average of about $1,333 per month.

» MORE: How to know if a credit card sign-up bonus is worth it

Airport lounge access

Besides access to more than 1,300 Priority Pass lounges , a somewhat common offering on travel cards in this class, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers access to Plaza Premium Lounges and full access to the new Capital One Lounges . As of November 2023, Capital One Lounges are open at Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, D.C., at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and at Denver International Airport.

Besides Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card holders, authorized users receive unlimited access to both types of lounges. Many travel credit cards restrict lounge access to the primary cardholder. Up to four authorized users can be added for free, which is not the case for other premium travel cards.

Anniversary perks

Central to the value of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card are the annual credits, which have substantial dollar value.

Up to a $300 annual credit for bookings made through Capital One Travel.

10,000 bonus miles every account anniversary (equal to $100 toward travel). The first batch of miles comes when you renew after one year of card membership.

Those credits alone, granted each year, make up for the annual fee. That assumes you’ll use the Capital One Travel online booking service. More on that later.

Flexible redemption options

Capital One's rewards program gives you several ways to use your miles for travel — both travel you already paid for and travel you want to book:

Redeem rewards as a statement credit. Book travel however you want, then redeem miles for statement credit for some or all of the cost. Miles are worth 1 cent each when redeemed, with no minimum redemption amount required. Any expense that Capital One considers "travel" is eligible, including not only flights and hotel stays, but "rail lines, car rental agencies, limousine services, bus lines, cruise lines, taxi cabs, travel agents and time shares," according to the Capital One website.

Book through the issuer's travel center. This online portal offers flights, hotels, rental cars and vacation packages. You can pay upfront with your miles, at a rate of 1 cent per mile.

Transfer miles to partners. Capital One lets you transfer your miles to the loyalty programs of a number of airline and hotel partners.

“Simple” and “premium travel credit card” aren't concepts that usually go together, since the typical card in that category is wildly complicated. But relatively, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is easier to understand than, say, The Platinum Card® from American Express . That card has a dizzying array of benefits, many of which aren’t super-useful to everybody or take an inordinate amount of effort to use.

By contrast, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card at its core retains the simplicity of the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card by offering a flat rewards rate on all spending and lets you use rewards to pay for travel.

It layers on airport lounge access and more rewards if you use the Capital One Travel portal.

The point is that someone willing to endure only modest hassle from their travel credit card can enjoy and benefit from the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . That same person might be frustrated by complex competing travel credit cards.

Travel-friendly perks

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers additional benefits frequent travelers will enjoy. Some come because it's a top-tier Visa Infinite card.

Complimentary Hertz President’s Circle status. This is the top status tier at Hertz. You can get confirmed one-car-class upgrades, 50% bonus on Gold Plus Rewards points on qualified rentals, free additional driver, expedited pickup and e-return, and more. The status is typically reserved for customers who have 20 or more rentals in a year or spend $4,000. The status level is good through 2024, at which point cardholders "will be reverted to the level commensurate with Hertz standard usage policies," says the card's terms and conditions.

Trusted traveler application credit. A statement credit of up to $100 for the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. The credit is available once every four years.

Cell phone insurance . This is for the primary cardholders and authorized users.

Travel protections. These include auto rental collision damage waiver , trip cancellation and interruption, and trip delay reimbursement.

No foreign transaction fees. Standard on travel credit cards and useful for overseas purchases ( see rates and fees ).

» MORE: Capital One credit cards mobile app review

With annual fees, it’s all relative. A yearly fee of $395 is substantial, but other luxury travel credit cards have similar or even significantly higher fees.

A sampling:

U.S. Bank Altitude™ Reserve Visa Infinite® Card : $400 .

Chase Sapphire Reserve® : $550 .

The Platinum Card® from American Express : $695 .

Still, if the big annual fee bothers you, but you like aspects of the card, consider the original Venture card with fewer perks: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . (See a comparison below.)

Outside the Capital One family, look at the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card with an annual fee of $95 . It’s versatile and valuable as a travel credit card.

Value tied to booking portal

Capital One Travel, the issuer’s online travel-booking site, has nice features, including predictive pricing models and tools to help customers get the best deals — including proactively comparing hotel rates against Expedia, Orbitz and other travel booking sites. It offers access to thousands of flights, hotels and rental cars, and features free price-drop protection, 24/7 alerts and the option to freeze a price and come back 14 days later to book it.

But this card’s value is so tied to that booking portal that it diminishes one of the main traits of the Venture family of cards: flexibility.

If for some reason you won’t use Capital One Travel for booking, the bonus rewards for spending on this card as well as the huge $300 travel credit are worth nothing to you. The card’s value proposition quickly shrinks. Some savvy travelers prefer to book directly with hotels, for example, which adds to their elite status with a particular hotel chain or allows them to use status benefits they already have. Booking through a travel portal can negate those elite benefits.

By contrast, the competing Chase Sapphire Reserve® also links the value of its rewards to its travel portal. Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are worth 1.5 cents each if used to book travel there. But an important difference: Its $300 annual credit can be used for a broad range of travel purchases, including taxi rides, campground fees and train fares. That travel can be booked anywhere, and the credit is applied automatically.

The comparable anniversary credit on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , one that can be used more flexibly for travel, is worth $100.

Granted, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® has a higher annual fee of $550 .

Lack of familiar transfer partners

For travelers who like to squeeze every last drop of value out of loyalty programs, the growing roster of transfer partners of the the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is appealing. You can now transfer your Venture miles to more than a dozen airline partners — but none are U.S. carriers. While transferring miles to foreign airline carriers can bring outsize value for your miles, it may be overwhelming for those just beginning with transfers. It does offer U.S. hotel partners for transfers to such programs as Wyndham Rewards.

If you want to work all the angles, one of the aforementioned Chase travel cards might be a better choice: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve® . You can move points to several useful airline and hotel loyalty programs at a 1:1 ratio. Partners include United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Marriott.

How it compares to the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Both Venture cards are general travel credit cards and come with the same base rewards rate of 2 miles per dollar spent. You can redeem miles at 1 cent apiece for credit on your statement against a recent travel purchase, use them at Capital One Travel or transfer to more than 15 travel loyalty programs. And both offer the same credit for applying for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. A third Venture card, the $0 -annual-fee Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card , is a less useful comparison ( see rates and fees ).

Is the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card worth the higher annual fee? Here’s a quick comparison.

If you already have the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , you can also apply for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

» MORE: Full review of the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Methodology.

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Best trip ever!

I’ve traveled quite a bit and this trip to Costa Rica with Gate1 has been so far the best! This is the first time I book with them. It is very well organized, Gerardo, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and fun to travel with. The stay in Tortuguero was a great experience I will never forget. The Hot Springs was a beautiful place. The hotels that were chosen for us were terrific. The restaurants we were taken were fabulous. I will definitely book more trips with Gate1 without a doubt.

Thank you for your kind feedback. We can’t wait to see you again!

Everything went exactly as we had…

Everything went exactly as we had hoped. Very smooth and easy flights and hotel check ins. Hotels were all very nice and met our expectations. All interactions I had with Gate 1 were very quick and helpful.

Great Company that delivers

After reading some of the negative reviews on Gate1 Travel, I decided to write. I’m a Canadian and have travelled with several other tour operators to dozens of countries and to all continents over the years and kept coming back to Gate 1. This company is of high standing, very professional with excellent customer service. I choose not to major on the nitty-gritty imperfections if any but focus on the important things that allows the tour to run smoothly like tour Manager top-notch communication skills, a good sense of humor, punctuality, and impeccable time management, contingency plans if a situation comes up and to arrange all travel related needs and wants from start to finish. I have travelled Gate 1 Classic (38 persons max) and small group discovery (22 persons max). The small group is well worth the extra money, hands down. We arrived home this week from Peru with the Amazon extension and will give it 5 stars. We had 4 internal flights and never had to worry about hauling our luggage. Checked luggage are always handled by Gate1, from hotel to airport (s) and then to final hotel room destination. This is a great benefit which I love. When possible, our tour Manager will have our boarding passes ready for airline check in ahead of time and our hotels check in process is a breeze. This can be a nightmare with some other tour operators (speaking from experience- yikes!). Another bonus, Gate 1 offers is great hotel accommodations in key locations where we can walk to restaurants/stores/attractions etc. Believe me, this can be a great benefit. It’s a treat after some long “tour and site seeing days” to come back to quality and nicer accommodations which is why my husband and I usually book pre and post stays at Gate 1 prices offered.

We truly appreciate your business and grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us. We hope to see you soon on another Gate 1 trip!

Never had a problem

I was very surprised to see all the negative feedback. It is true that the Tour Manager makes all the difference on these kind of tours and ours have always been exceptional. We have done Italy, Spain, and SE Asia and have loved everyone of them. We are not old and feeble so maybe that has something to do with it because Gate1 does make sure you see everything on the itinerary and you get your monies worth, which what we like. Our last tour manager was Tim for the SE Asia trip and she was amazing, in fact we are still in touch because we have become friends. From our view they keep getting better and better and we would recommend Gate1 highly. PS ask for TIM if you go to SE Asia won't be disappointed.

Gate 1 great but their trip insurance provider is worthless

Great company with well-organized tours but the insurance company they route all Travel Insurance through—Arch Insurance—has terrible reviews and does everything to avoid paying claims. I had a trip scheduled to Mexico in March 2024–and paid for. I had to cancel my Gate 1 trip because I was hospitalized for 11 days after I flew a long airplane flight from Ireland. At the time I booked the Gate 1 trip I was well. I suffered from acute pulmonary embolisms from the long flight. Arch insurance only paid out $300 on my well documented claim. I am a retired lawyer and know how to fill out and document claims. Their denial was flagrant. Getting only $300 back made it a complete waste of time to file the claim. If 11 days with acute pulmonary embolisms preventing me from future plane trips is not justification, what is? Never ever accept Arch. Find another provider.

After reading all the negative reviews…

After reading all the negative reviews I decide to not go ahead and confirm the Baltic trip I had hoped to do with Gate 1 Travel. No way do I want to get stuck someplace with no help from the tour company. Glad I decided to read reviews before clicking the "Book" button.

The 8 day Tour of Spain was well organized, good hotel rooms and services . Our tour guide Rosemary capably led some great tours. We took a two hours in Alhambra which for me was the highlight of this tour. The only issue for me was that the return flights were far too long. Madrid,Amsterdam,JFK and then to Toronto. I will consider future tours with Gate1

Essential Portugal and Spain

Our experience was terrific! We were greeted at the airport by the tour manager Alex and taken to the hotel. Everything was so organized with time between tours for lunch or shopping. The hotels were nice too. We felt safe and cared for at all times. The tour guides were fantastic in each city giving us plenty of history without being boring. The bus driver Marco was excellent making sure our things were secured at all time. We will definitely use this tour company again.

Gate1 are uncaring ……After doing around 8 tours with Gate1 I…

After doing around 8 tours with Gate1 I unfortunately had to cancel over a month before we were commencing our tour due to having to have emergency surgery. I thought Gate1 might be understanding and give us a full refund or at least credit towards another trip. They would only refund half our money and yes that was in the cancellation policy but having been such a long term repeat customer who had recommended them to many, I was under the delusion they may have some understanding of my situation and refund the full amount or at least give credit towards my next trip. I am six months post surgery now and have booked this years tour with another company. Will never book with Gate1 again.

Poor customer service leading to loss of ticket value

No possible to reach the travel agents on phone. Hence, communication to the Gate1 travel agents is possible via emails only. By 3pm UK time on 18 Feb, I confirmed my request to change my flight, from 19Feb at 1:45am to another day. But no response has been received, although my response was within 30-40min since the agent's reply time.. I appreciate this was on Sunday, but a clear statement on working hours and limitation from the beginning would be helpful. It seems the value of the ticket is lost which is very unpleasant. This could be easily avoided if there was an opportunity to call to agree the change and pay the diff in tariff.

Wish I had read these reviews before…

Wish I had read these reviews before booking a trip to Turkey with Gate 1. Unfortunately Gate 1 Travel is NOT worth your hard earned money if life or work changes prevent your travel! Never buy insurance from this travel co. I was unable almost a year later to travel at the scheduled time to Turkey. Insurance will not cover this and Gate 1will not allow or honor any of my money paid to go to the rescheduling of my trip. My roundtrip tickets per Turkish Air due to a time change has emailed me that I can rebook my tickets without a change fee or additional costs! However I must go through Gate 1. Bobbie the Gate 1 Supervisor who initially refused to introduce herself, give her name until multiple requests and and absolutely refused to provide her full name or her boss’ name. Bobby stated she would ONLY ALLOW me to keep my fully paid airline tickets in MY NAME if I booked a new tour of Turkey paying FULL PRICE no credit or discount! RUN as fast as you can from this company! 3/22/24 Follow up I received a TC from Shannon Daugherty from Gate 1Travel. She informed me that my Turkish Airline tickets should and will be fully refunded. Shannon is working with me and was respectful as well as helpful. I was instructed to submit a claim to Gate 1Travel Insurance. If denied Gate 1 specifically Shannon will work with me to reschedule my trip next year without losing all my money. I will update this review once I have I have been reimbursed for my tickets and exactly what Gate 1 does regarding the tour!

Cancel for any reason doesn't really work.

We bought the cancel for any reason policy. We cancelled because we had to travel from NC to PA for my best friend's funeral. We were supposed to travel in October of 2023. So now we get a partial credit and a very small refund. Doesn't really do us any good because now it costs almost double for the same trip and we can't afford that. So we are basically out $1800 that we paid.

Very disappointed with Gate 1

Very disappointed with Gate 1. We’re scheduled to tour Egypt in November. However, due to the the conflict that’s happening now with Israel in Palastine/Gaza and the West Bank, we are justifiably concerned about our safety. Our trip is fully paid, but we had humbly requested to reschedule for a later date to travel (Not asking for a refund) just to reschedule. Unfortunately for us Gate1 outright denied our request disregarding our concerns. The Arch insurance that’s offered through Gate1 essentially only covers Gate1.

Travel Protection is a scam, thru Gate 1.…

Booked Christmas market trip for early Dec. Bought ‘Travel Protection’ that Gate 1 promotes. My travel partner needed a heart operation. Had to cancel trip. We’ve waited two months after providing info requested with letter from surgeon. Today they say coverage denied because she had defib prior. Of course the Protection was stated as covering pre-existing conditions!!!!!! Total rip-off. Deceptive scam artists. VERY disgusted!!!

Good experience with tour company

A tour by Gate 1 Travel called Discover Northern France that was booked for March 2024 was cancelled because of a lack of enough reservations to make this tour viable. A Customer Resolution Specialist for Gate 1, Donna Young, notified me that I could get a refund, Gate 1 travel credit, or book this tour later in the year at no additional cost. I chose to book this tour later in the year. Donna did an excellent job of offering me alternative dates and I chose a date in the fall 2024. I wish to thank Gate 1 for the options offered to me and to Donna for the superb job in booking an alternative tour date.

Rethink Using Gate 1 for Travel

I was in a vehicle accident while on safari with Gate 1 in India last month. I was in the passenger seat of a large safari truck when a faulty door unexpectedly opened on the moving vehicle causing me to fall out backwards and hit my back and my head on surrounding rocks where I was knocked unconscious. I was taken to the emergency room by our tour guide because of the injuries to my head and my back. I was given pain medication (no diagnostics were done) and luckily my friend had brought her cane with her which I was forced to use for the remainder of the trip. My headaches and severe back pain continued until I was forced to go to the emergency room again. This time they gave me a shot in the back for my pain and pain meds, but again, no diagnostics. Severe back pain and headaches continued throughout the remainder of the trip making it difficult to keep up. When I returned home, I went to the emergency room where I had a CAT Scan and was given additional medication and lidocaine patches for the pain. Upon seeing my back surgeon following the ER visit it was decided that I needed major back surgery. The fall had exasperated my existing condition. The surgery was scheduled for 7 May. Upon scheduling the surgery, I contacted Gate 1 immediately to follow up on my accident and let them know of the planned surgery. (I assumed the accident had already been reported by the trip leader.) The surgery conflicted with another Gate 1 trip I had planned for Jordan on 7 May (the date of my surgery). Per my surgeon, and my inability to walk, I requested the trip be postponed to the fall. They outright refused. I then asked to speak to a supervisor who also refused my request. Mind you, I wasn’t asking to cancel the trip, just postpone the trip! I finally received an e-mail from an individual at Reservations: Support who also refused to postpone my trip. They said I needed to pay the 50% penalty fee since I “decided” to cancel. Once again, the ONLY reason I canceled was due to an accident that happened due to a faulty door on their trip!!! I found the entire interaction with Gate 1 beyond frustrating. India was my 10th trip with Gate 1. To add insult to injury, I was also in a vehicle accident on a Gate 1 tour when I was on a Kenya and Tanzania safari in the fall of 2022. Gate 1 was “so generous” for that inconvenience and my pain and suffering that they gave me $100. No apology. The lack of concern, assistance, and understanding from Gate 1 is appalling, especially considering this was my second major accident caused by Gate 1’s negligence in a two-year period. I will certainly be rethinking my use of Gate 1 as a tour company in the future. Maybe you should too.

9 Day Classic Japan

This 9 Day tour should actually be called 7 Day Classic Japan - Gate 1 needs to revise / review since 2 of the days you are actually in transit. Our tour guide Ichiro was phenomenal- kudos to him for his patience & handling the hiccups. Loved the country, it's people & the culture. Only disappoinmet was that Japan has so much to offer but the Gate1 itinerary focussed on way too many shrines/temples.

Thereza, our tour guide in Europe

Thereza, our tour guide on Gate One's trip from Mainz, Germany to Venice, Austria November 2023 was extremely accommodating. She was punctual while caring for specific needs of some 40 people for 10 days. She was very knowledgeable of the 5 countries that we toured and surprised us continually with gifts; nice hotels; meals and even music that we all sang along with as we traveled. She was fun and we'd recommend her highly for a trip with Gate One travels in your future!!!

Worst customer service

Worst customer service. I had booked a trip to Greece. I called them about my plane itinerary. No answer after being on hold for hours together. I emailed them, but no response whatsoever. I will never ever book anything with these people. Stay away from 'GATE1 TRAVEL". I 100% agree with majority negative reviews on this website. Please do yourself a favor and save yourself from tremendous future headache by not using this lousy travel company.

Not really "making it right"

No follow up as promised. I gave a bad review of Gate 1 last week due to the bad customer service (and significant financial loss) from a recent Gate 1 trip. They immediately responded that they were sorry to hear this and would pass my information on to customer service so they could make it right. It's a week later and I have heard absolutely nothing. It's obviously just an automated response to make people think they are taking care of it, when in fact, they are blowing their customer off. Never thought I'd say this, but stay clear of Gate 1. I checked with my agent and the last communication she had was 6 days ago when the Gate 1 agent said I would get my $600 deposit back and "only" a 90% cancellation fee instead of 100%. Not really "making it right" in my mind, but I'm done. We will take our final tour with Gate 1 this Aug. (our 8th) as it is already booked. They have lost my loyalty and trust.
