Scenic Spots on the way to Gangotri

There are several places on the way to Gangotri which are worth to see. We took almost two days to cover the following places along with Gangotri.

After our visit to Yamnotri , we came down to Jannki Chatti at 2.00 PM. We checked out our rooms & proceeded further towards Gangotri. Earlier we planned to stay at Barkot which is about 40 Kms from Jannki Chatti but as we had sufficient time , our driver suggested to stay at Bhramkhal which is 40 kms ahead Barkot. So next day we got sufficient time to explore the places on the way to Gangotri. From Barkot three of the roads go to Yamnotri , Gangotri & Dehradun via Kempty fall (Mussoorie) We turned to the left for the way to Gangotri. We took a small halt at Barkot for Tea and stretching our legs & body.

On the way we found a small guest house in a village Bharm khal before the main city starts. In Garhwal you will find a lot of names of places suffixed with Khal , Khal means Village . Location of the guest house was such that one can enjoy the scenic beauty & peace of the surrounding. We felt as if we were staying in some relative’s house. Food was as per our choice , what ever we liked to have they cooked it freshly for us. We experienced a homely ambiance. In the morning when I got up it was drizzling, After having my tea I went out alone for a walk to enjoy the natural beauty . We all had our breakfast & started our journey further , After half an hour we reached Dharasu band which is about 15 kms from Bhram Khal , At that point the road is divided. The left road goes to Gangotri Via Uttarkashi & right goes to Rishikesh / Dehradun via Chamba .

Our first halt was at Uttarkashi . It is 102 Km from Yamnotri & 26 Km from Dharasu band. Uttarkashi is a prosperous town with modern amenities and is the headquarter of the district of the same name. It is situated on the bank of river Ganga. There is no Petrol pump on the way to Gangotri which is about 100 Kms from Uttarkashi hence it’s suggested to get your tank full. We parked our vehicle & walked down towards temples mentioned below:-

Kashi Vishwnath

Kashi Vishwnath Temple is the most famous and dedicated to Load Shiva. It is one of the prime pilgrimage attractions in Uttarkashi around 300 mts from the local bus stand. An ancient temple, it is said that it was first built by Parasuram. Later, it was renovated by Maharani Khaneti, wife of Sudarshan Shah in 1857. The temple has a Shivling, 60 cms high and 90 cms in circumference. No one misses this holy shrine on their trip to Uttarkashi.

Shakti Temple

This temple is just opposite to Vishwanath temple. A big Trishul in this temple is the centre of attraction. The trishul is 6 metres in height and 90 cms at the bottom. Different people hold different views about the trishul, it is widely believed that the trishul is made of iron in the upper part and copper in the lower part. The epics say that this trishul was thrown at devils by goddess Durga.

Other then these temples , there is a Nehru Mountaineering Institute or NIM this is the famous mountaineering training Institute in India. Trekkers and mountaineers can hire the different mountaineering gadgets and accessories from NIM for their adventure.

The climate here remains quite hot during summers, having visited both the temples we had some soft drinks and proceeded further towards Gangotri , 8 kms ahead there is a village called Nathahla . I suggest this is the best place to stay nearby Uttarkashi as the climate remains pleasant and one can find the economical hotels here, so while coming back from Gangotri we decided to stay here for one night. Nathala is situated on the bank of river Ganga, During our stay there we spent our evening near the river. We were so fascinated by the peaceful and spacious bank of the river that we could not come to know how our hours were passed out and we did not feel like going back to our hotel.

On our way we found out Maneri at a distance of about 10 km from Uttarkashi, Maneri has lately emerged as a place of tourist interest as a result of the construction of a Dam across the Bhagirathi river , from where the water is fed to the turbines through an 8-km-long tunnel at Tiloth in Uttarkashi. The resultant lake at Maneri has added to the charm of the place.

On our way next place was a small town Bhatwari which is 19 kms from Maneri . At the starting of the village Bhatwari there is a beautifully partially constructed Ashram known as “Pilot Baba Ashram” on the bank of river Bhagirathi.

Our next aimed destination was Harsil . It is 6 kms from Jhala . Most of the people prefer to stay in Harsil only before visiting Gangotri. But we were not able to stay there because of the non availability of rooms. We stayed in Village Dharali which is about 3 kms from Harsil.

It is said that Harsil got its name because the rivers Bhagirathi and the Jalandhari once had an argument about which was more important. Lord Vishnu, also known as Hari, was asked to intervene. He turned himself into a great stone, a shila, and absorbed their anger. And even today, after Hari-shila (or Harsil), the waters of the two rivers become a little less turbulent.

Harsil is famous for its Apple & Rajma (Red in Colour) .

Ram Teri Ganga Mali was shot in Harsil and the famous Jharna (Fall) scene of actress – Mandakini was shot under this particular waterfall, which now bears her name. Harsil was popular for the legend of ‘Pahari’ Wilson, or Raja Wilson. Frederick E. Wilson, an adventurer, deserted the British Army just after the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. He escaped into Garhwal and met the Raja of Tehri seeking refuge. But the Raja was faithful to the British and refused to accommodate Wilson. Wilson moved into the mountains to escape detection. Fate landed him in Harsil, a remote beautiful village on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, with dense deodar slopes on either side. Wilson married a very beautiful pahari girl by the name of Gulabi. Then Wilson entered into a contract with a London-based company and built a fortune out of the export of skins, fur and musk. This was the time the British were building the Railways in India and there was great demand for quality wooden sleepers for the rails. Wilson cashed in on this and sent huge cut deodar trees floating down the river to the plains. Initially, Wilson had not taken permission from the Raja of Tehri-Garhwal for his logging business. But later, he acquired a lease from the Raja, giving him a share in the profits. It is said that the revenue of the Raja of Tehri went up tenfold. Little wonder that Wilson was a welcome guest. It is said that in course of time, Raja Wilson, as he was known by then, minted his own currency and as late as the 1930s, his coins were found with the local people. According to some historians, the timber trade had made Wilson so wealthy and powerful that the local Raja of Tehri-Garhwal was unable to protect his subjects, whom Wilson brutalised and used as slaves. Raja Wilson seemed to have been a sort of architect and built, what is known today as Wilson’s Cottage , a huge mansion, now in ruins. He also built the Charlieville Hotel in the hill station of Mussoorie, which now houses the Government of India training institute for the Indian Administrative Service recruits

Mr. Mahesh, No words to describe . Great info log with equally well supported pics. Apart from the nature , your pic with two old men is simply good :-)

Dear Sahil,

Thanks for your golden words.!!!!!!

Thanks Mahesh for the info and beautiful pictures. However the architecture and crude design of these newly constructed makeshift temples is is really hurting the eyes. Isnt there any legislation for minimum requirement on the aesthetics of new buildings/temples in such areas? The other established temples fit in naturally in the landscape.

Thanks for liking the post & the pictures. In Uttrakhand most of the temples are very old (historical).

It is a great description and I await your next write-up (Gangotri).

Thanks for this riveting article. Auro.

Aurojit Da,

Thanks for your motivational words. Till yesterday I was waiting for three more comments , from you , Prof. Manish & Mr. Ram Dhall. I am happy to see your comment & still waiting for two more comments.

' src=

I hope I am not too late. Only Ram is left now :-)

Too many things to comment. I go from the end :-)

* Information about Harsil and Wilson is very interesting. For me these stories help to connect with the place more. And just after that when I looked at the picture titled views from Lanka Bridge I was scared. Beautiful place to be.

* Good to know that Harsil is also the place Rajkapoor chose to shoot Ram teri Ganga Maili. He has an amazing sense of beauty.

* Too much concrete do spoil the green surroundings, be it due to temples as well.

* All other pictures are wonderful and give a definte feel of the place inviting to come and visit.

* I also feel that many a times talking even in few words or may be including in end a brief description about the place you stayed and how much it cost helps to make decisions when someone is planning to go that place and yes phone numbers also helps. Just in case someone is not willing to take chances of going there without reservation.

Perfect start of the day. Thanks Mahesh :-)

Thanks Manish!!!!!!!!!!

If you ask me honestly without any formalities, I was waiting for your comment since it was published but its better to be late then never.

Thanks for your encouraging words & your suggestions.

I am overwhelmed Mahesh with your affection. It makes me feel proud of our ghumakkar family.

Its always my pleasure to read, know and see so many places. Thanks and let many more coming :-)

Pleasure is all mine professor sab.:-)

Himachal – Kalpa, Shimla

I have lived in Shimla long back in early 90s when my father was posted here. I used to come in summers for 2 months for 3 years, so I was keen on visiting places where I had lived and visited during that time. We lived in a suburb of Shimla there called Kelti . The route to it is from Ridge to Longwood and then towards Kelston and then bifurcate at one point towards Kelti . It was nostalgic to walk on the same road which I used to frequent 20 years back as child. To my surprise, road was just like what it used to be. Same road barriers painted green and white, the rain shelters where I took refuge many times in rains, the ascent, descent. The final leg to Kelti was still unpaved like it was at that time. Though this time saw more people crossing me with phones in their hands, hoardings and presence of vehicles.

Harsil – Gangotri Trip | Most Common Itineraries [Day-By-Day Plans]

Shefali Joshi

Are you planning a trip to Harsil and Gangotri and looking out for some day by day itinerary to travel to these beautiful places of Garhwal in Uttarakhand?

Perched in the Himalayas in Uttarakhand – both Harsil and Gangotri are important and integral stops for pilgrimage and natural beauty seekers! Harsil is especially scenic and gains immense popularity due to its proximity to many stunning places in the region.

Gangotri, in itself, needs no introduction. A revered Hindu pilgrimage site, Gangotri is a must-visit – even if you’re not super religious. The healing powers of nature here will make you believe in the magic of the valley!

So whether you want to visit the places on a long weekend or plan an elaborate itinerary for the region – I have you covered. Keep reading below.

Views of Harsil Valley

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Harsil & Gangotri

Harsil is fenced in its majestic location by snow-capped mountains and coniferous & deodar forests Gangotri, on the other hand, is the location of a sacred Hindu temple, worshipping the ever-important Goddess Ganga. And, it is one of the four temples in the Chota Char Dham circuit .

Gangotri temple is open for six months every year, due to the intense climate in the winter season! When visiting Gangotri or Harsil – there’s a lot to cover nearby and let me describe the most prominent places for you in detail. As an important note, the idol of Goddess Ganga shifted from Gangotri to Mukhba village during winters.

Best time to visit Harsil & Gangotri

Harsil is accessible throughout the year. However, Gangotri is closed in the winter season. Keeping this in mind, April, May, and September are the best time to visit Harsil and Gangotri. November is overall a bad month because the scenery at this time is turning colors and doesn’t provide the best of the region.

It will be terribly cold, but, unfortunately, there won’t even be any snow around. If you’re planning a motorcycle trip – June and September are the best months. If you have trek on your mind then May, June, October make for a good bet. Remember it is important to avoid the region in the monsoon season as the hills tend to be frail with landslides abound.

Gangotri Dham

How to reach Harsil

Harsil is well-connected by road and there are airport and railway station options within 200 km. Particularly, Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is situated 230 km from Harsil. And, the nearest railway station is Rishikesh – 215 KMs away.

The best option is to drive down to Harsil . Well connected by road, Harsil lies on NH 108 and regular buses to Rishikesh/ Dehradun are easily available. Upon reaching these places, one will need to change buses to reach Harsil.

Road Conditions for Harsil and Gangotri

Following is the breakdown of road conditions for the trip:

Dheeraj Sharma

Dheeraj Sharma

  • Delhi – Muzaffarnagar: Well maintained for most parts. Might reach bumpy corners near Modi Nagar
  • Muzaffarnagar – Roorkee – Haridwar – Rishikesh : Single-lane road in most places, lot of traffic and mix of good + excellent condition road barring few patches.
  • Rishikesh – Chamba – Dharasu: Most well mettle. Few patches are rough.
  • Dharasu – Uttarkashi – Bhatwari: Few landslides points in between the route. However, other portions are also a mix of good and bad. Best to keep an eye out.
  • Bhatwari – Sukhi Top – Harsil: 5-6 water crossings and slush stretches.

Harsil is perched at an elevation of 2623 meters and is populated by the cultural group of Bhutiyas and some Jadhs. The village has apple orchards for as long as 70 Kms! That kind of view is not only uncommon but damn near rare! Harsil is around 25 KMs from Gangotri temple and makes for an ideal pit stop in the region.

An integral part of the Gangotri National Park , Harsil is classified as an army area. The perfect friend for the town is the Bhagirathi river, which gives this sleepy town more life, more color and allows you the luxury of taking things at your own pace. Scanning the landscape of Harsil, you’ll be able to spot many temples in the town nestled in between the forests of Deodar, Pine, and Oak trees.

A place needing no introduction, Gangotri is the reverential Dham for it is the home of Goddess Ganga. A place where the holiest river originates has to be a beautiful and peaceful spot- and it is.

There is a beautiful temple at a height of 3048 Meters which is a lifetime wish of most Hindus to visit. Gangotri is located at a distance of 20 km from Harsil. The place is more than worth a visit as the cascading games of the Himalayas and the Bhagirathi rivers will leave you speechless.

If you haven’t had enough of the views and want to discover the region further, I highly recommend staying overnight in Gangotri and return to Harsil the next day. Although, I should inform you here that most people would cover Gangotri and return to Harsil in the same day. Also, it should be noted that you will not have the luxury to visit the region in the winter season as the place is engulfed in snow and the idol is moved to its winter abode of Mukhba.

Also known as Mukhwas and Mukhwa, this hamlet is approximately a kilometer from Harsil. When Gangotri is closed for the winter, the idols are shifted down to the Ganges temple in Mukhba for a few months. In fact, I recommend taking an evening stroll when you’re in Harsil and check out the place.

Mukhba Temple - Winter Shrine of Gangotri

Dharali is located merely 2 km from the Harsil village and is adorned with beautiful apple orchards. Another thing you must note is that Dharali is famous for its high snow-walls in winters and it is one of the places which you can visit to see snowfall near Delhi in Uttarakhand . The place is tied with many mythologies – including Bhagirath meditating here to wish for Ganga to flow from heaven to Earth.

If you plan on staying in Gangotri, I urge you to visit Gaumukh. Taking about 2 days, this trek will cover about 35 KMs and you will reach a maximum altitude of 13,200 ft. This will take you to the exact place of the origin of the Ganga. And, truly Gaumukh is a sight to behold . Plan accordingly. However, I must mention that you should be fairly fit to cover this journey. If you have more time to spare for this trip – I would tell you to also visit Tapovan.

Sattal Trek near Harsil (Sat Taal)

Situated about 5 km from Dharali – Harsil, Sattal is a body of 7 lakes (Sat = Seven, Tal = Lake). The mysterious lake trek will truly blow your mind, you will be greeted by some stunning flora and fauna. Given the short distance, you can easily cover the journey in a day’s time!

The lakes are all at different altitudes, with Mridunga Tal at 9,600 ft. and Bakria Tal at 10034 Ft. The other lakes are located in between these two. The remainder two lakes are at higher altitudes and requires a longer time duration to visit them all as you will need to be properly acclimatized .

Please note that this Sattal trek is different from the Sattal Lake in Kumaon near Nanital.

Day by Day Itinerary for Harsil – Gangotri Trip

Let us look at few itineraries for planning a trip to Harsil and Gangotri.

3 Days Itinerary – Weekend Trip to Harsil Gangotri

Depending on the time you have available, you can cover the two places at ease or quickly on a weekend. Here’s how.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Day 1 – Delhi to Harsil

Start your journey off early and reach Harsil by evening. Other places you can cover include the Wilson Cottage , or better yet – spend some time at the banks of the Bhagirathi river.

Day 2 – Harsil – Gangotri – Mukhba – Harsil

Long day for you – and I suggest you start off early in the morning. Cover the 25 km distance to Gangotri, taking about 90 minutes. Spend the afternoon in Gangotri. On the way back, go for an evening stroll and cover Mukhba. Spend a leisurely night at Harsil.

Day 3 – Harsil to Delhi

Head back to Delhi. Keep in mind that this will be a very rushed trip and most of your time will get spent on the road. We have done this trip before and documented it for you .

Bhagirathi River in Harsil

Harsil – 4 Days Itinerary

Adding an additional day to your itinerary will help you cover more places. However, like the 3-day trip – even this will be a bit cramped and can be tiring.

Day 1 Delhi to Harsil

Reach Harsil from Delhi with the same route as the 3 Day itinerary. Relax and rejuvenate.

Day 2 – Sightseeing in Harsil – Dharali, Mukhba, Sattal Trek

Here’s where your plan differs slightly. Instead of heading out to Gangotri, cover key places in and near Harsil such as the Dharali, Mukhba, and Sattal Trek. Again, have a relaxing dinner in Harsil.

Day 3 Harsil – Gangotri – Harsil

Reach Gangotri from Harsil in the morning. Spend the afternoon here and cover nearby places to Gangotri. Explore the region more and return by evening.

Day 4 – Harsil to Delhi

Return to Delhi from Harsil.

Gangotri Dham

5-6 Days Itinerary of Gangotri and Harsil

If you can spare the time and plan properly, this is the way to go.

Day 1 – Delhi to Uttarkashi

Instead of reaching Harsil directly, you may stopover at Uttarkashi and cover the remainder of the journey the next day. I like breaking long road trips in this manner as it ensures I reach my destination well-rested ! Also, it affords me an additional day of exploring a new place that was not on my list when planning the vacation.

Day 2 – Uttarkashi to Harsil – Sightseeing in the Village

Reach Harsil and spend a relaxing day exploring the village and understanding the culture. There are some beautiful walks from around the orchards that will definitely put you in the Uttarakhandi lifestyle!

Day 3 – Sat Taal Trek and move on to Gangotri

Cover the Sattal lake trek – covering at least 5 of the 7 lakes. After you’ve had your fill – move on to Gangotri and spend the night there.

Day 4 and 5 – Gangotri to Gaumukh and back to Harsil

Visit the Gangotri temple early in the morning and start your trek towards Gaumukh – the origin of Ganga . Return the next day from this trip. If you’re a novice trekker, I suggest you hire a guide and do this trek at an easy pace. Maybe you being a novice trekker should take three days to complete the trek from Gangotri to Gaumukh and back to Gangotri.

Day 6 – Harsil to Delhi

Return to Delhi from Harsil in a day’s drive.

Additional Days – Consider Nelong!

If you can add another day to your trip, I suggest you may visit Nelong Valley. However, this will need required permits which takes some days of travel too. But, in case you are in no hurry and want to explore this untouched valley of Uttarakhand, then I have discussed this topic at length in our detailed travel guide for Nelong Valley: Mini Ladakh in Uttarakhand .

Most famous viewpoint of Harsil

I hope the above day-by-day plan or itinerary for Harsil and Gangotri helps you in understanding all that you can cover and the realistic timeline to do all that you may plan.

Located in the extreme terrain of Uttarkashi region, Gangotri Glacier is a 28 km long and almost 4 km wide. Originating from right below the Chaukhamba Peak the glacier flows northwest and the course of water takes a turn creating the shape of a cow’s mouth thus the name Gaumukh . The Gangotri Glacier borders China and is the primary source of water for Ganga and Bhagirathi – one of the major tributaries of Ganga.

Gangotri being the largest Himalayan Glacier is enveloped by Bhagirathi III, Meru, Shivling and Thalay Sagar Peaks. The lush meadows and majestic nature around make for an exciting prospect for adventurers and trekkers. Gangotri Glacier is a group of 18 tributary glaciers among which 7 Rakt Varn Glacier, 8 Chaturangi Glacier and 3 Kirti Glacier. Swachand, Miandi, Sumeru, and Ghanohim are a few other tributary glaciers that form the Gangotri. Maitri, Meru, Bhrigupanth, and Manda Glaciers feed the river Bhagirathi.

Arrival in Gangotri, rest, and acclimatise

acj-0410-gangotri-glacier-trek-7

Altitude: 10,055 feet

A 12-hour drive from Rishikesh leads you to Gangotri. Lofty mountain peaks, glaciers, deodars, and stunning vistas decorate your temporary habitat in the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas. Thin air and holy river flowing around cleanse your soul as you prepare to head for the glorious trek in days to come. Gangotri is a religious sojourn thronged by spiritual seekers. Bhagirathi, a tributary of Ganga, originates from here.

Day 1 – Gangotri to Chirbasa

acj-0410-gangotri-glacier-trek-3

Altitude: 11,761 feet Distance: 9 km, Time taken: 6 hours

Sudarshan Parbat at 21, 345 feet looms large over the forest checkpoint making for an exceptional spectacle on the first day of the trek. Boulders, deserted glaciers, and cluster of peaks are the prominent sight enroute that you would find here. After a long day of trek, arrive in Chirbasa. GMVN huts and campsites are the only option of stay here. Bhagirathi river flowing in the close proximity makes the campsite a scenic hideout.

Day 2 – Chirbasa to Bhojbasa

acj-0410-gangotri-glacier-trek-5

Altitude: 12,450 feet Distance: 5 km, Time taken: 3 hours

A comparatively short but certainly a challenging day of the trek. Some steep climb in the beginning followed by gradual upslope makes this climb easier for trekkers. Carry sufficient water with you because you won’t find too many options. Upon reaching Bhojbasa, take an acclimatisation walk to Gaumukh and head back to the campsite. Stay cautious, there are 8-9 landslide prone bends during the stretch.

Move quickly, resting is not recommended here. Bhojbasa happens to be the widest point in the valley and you are absolutely going to love the beauty of the campsite here. There are a few igloo-like structures here. Staying in these places require the permission of forest officials. A few trek operators allow you an extra day to explore and get acclimatised to conditions in Tapovan.

Day 3 – Bhojbasa to Tapovan via Gaumukh

acj-0410-gangotri-glacier-trek-8

Altitude: 14,200 feet Distance: 9 km, Time taken : 7 hours

acj-0410-gangotri-glacier-trek-4

Altitude: 11,750 feet Distance: 14 km, Time taken: 8.5 hours

Another day of daunting trek when you negotiate turns, bends, and climbs to walk almost 14 km spanning the entire day. Difficult descent followed by a few ascents make this patch an exciting one. If you have time in the evening, you can explore Tapovan, actually there’s a lot to explore there.

Tapovan is 2 km in length and makes for a beautiful campsite. However, not the entire area is suitable for camping. Neelatal is the place to watch out for the place from where Mt. Meru looks the closest and most stunning.

Day 5 – Chirbasa to Gangotri
