Overall, a fine tour. The 4 hotels were excellent choices. One of the points that keeps me traveling with Go Ahead is the policy of maintaining a good price point by avoiding iconic and luxury hotels (which are not needed when so little time is spent at the hotels) in favor of more moderately-priced...

The Toomkirik Lutheran Cathedral in Tallinn, Estonia, is home to many legendary tombs and we will be captivated when our tour guide regales us with the tales behind these remains.

While Helsinki, Finland, is a relatively young capital, from a European perspective, we will still enjoy the vibrancy of the present as we walk along the markets that sit along the harbour, or admire the stonework of the government buildings.

Day 1 Arrive in Krakow Arrival in Krakow. Krakow is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It was originally the home of the Polish royalty (between 1038 and 1596), before the capital was moved to Warsaw. The cobblestone streets, majestic churches (almost 100!), and old world charm make Krakow an unforgettable destination. PLEASE NOTE: Our Poland program will operate slightly differently depending on the date selected. Because of closures on certain days of the week, the sightseeing order will vary from Spring to Fall (our overnight points, however, remain the same). This itinerary reflects the order of sightseeing for the immediately upcoming departure; once that trip departs, this itinerary will be updated for the following date. Overnight in Krakow. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Krakow: City Walking Tour Krakow is very compact, and the whole central region with its cobblestone streets is full of well-preserved architecture, Gothic churches and splendid museums. On our sightseeing tour (largely on foot at a leisurely pace) we visit Wawel Hill with the Royal Castle, Market Square, and the 16th century Renaissance Cloth Hall. We continue onward to Jagiellonian University and St Mary's Church with the Wit Stwosz altar. This was designed in 1489 by Wit Stwosz of Nuremburg and is the finest sculptural work in Poland. We then stroll down the hill from the castle complex and enter the Old Town, one of the most famous old districts in Poland and the centre of Poland's political life from 1038 until King Sigismund III Vasa relocated his court to Warsaw in 1596. The entire medieval old town is among the first sites chosen for the UNESCO's World Heritage List. The district features the centrally located Rynek Glowny, or Main Square, the largest medieval town square of any European city. There is a number of historic landmarks in its vicinity, such as St. Mary's Basilica (Kosciol Mariacki), Church of St. Wojciech (St. Adalbert's), Church of St. Barbara, as well as other national treasures. While in Krakow, we'll also have a walking visit of Kazimierz, once an independent town governed separately from Krakow until the late middle ages. Later, it became known as the Jewish Quarter of the city and was finally transformed into a center for Krakow’s beatnik bars and cafe culture. Overnight in Krakow. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Oskar Schindler Museum & Wieliczka Salt Mines This morning we visit the Oskar Schindler's Factory Museum. The story of Oskar Schindler and his employees is one which has been well-known since the book and film by Thomas Keneally and Steven Spielberg (whose film 'Schindler's List' was shot almost entirely in Krakow). Individual histories of Krakow's wartime inhabitants guide visitors through the exhibit which covers the war of 1939, everyday life under occupation, the fate of the Jews and the city's underground resistance using vast archival documents, photos, radio and film recordings, period artifacts and multimedia. We'll then break for lunch* after which we'll head to the Wieliczka Salt Mines. On our 5km (3 mile) journey below the earth's surface we will see the salt-formed caves and grottoes, a subterranean lake and a chapel with statues carved from salt. The mines' 11 levels of galleries stretch 300km (186 miles), and some 20,000,000 tonnes (22,000,000 tons) of rock salt were extracted over 700 years. According to local legend, the deposits were discovered in the 13th century by a Hungarian princess named Kinga, whose lost ring was found in a block of salt extracted here. * Because of the fullness of our day, and because past travellers indicated a desire for some independence for dinner while in Krakow (and an earlier night), we include a light lunch instead of dinner today. Overnight in Krakow. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 4 Krakow - Oswiecim (Auschwitz) - Czestochowa - Lodz Our first stop today is the Oswiecim (Auschwitz) and Brzezinka (Birkenau) Nazi concentration camps preserved as memorials to the 1.5 million people of 28 nationalities who perished here, the overwhelming majority of whom were Jewish. Our guided walking tour of the site reveals the compelling history of this region and the very human aspect of this particular historic location. We continue to Czestochowa, the "spiritual home" of Poland, where pilgrims from every corner of the country come to Jasna Gora (Luminous Mountain) Monastery to revere the image of the Black Madonna, Poland's most important icon. Legend says that the icon was painted by St Luke the Evangelist on a piece of cypress wood from the table used by Mary in Nazareth. The icon was brought from Jerusalem and installed in the monastery around 1384. We finish our day in Lodz (pronounced: Wooj). A small settlement, that in 1423 was granted civic rights, was thriving at the beginning of the 19th century. Lodz became one of the Europe's biggest and fastest growing textile industry centre. At that time, a new identity of the city - "a promised land" and "a city of many cultures" was created. In Lodz people of different nationalities and religions shared the same dream of a success. Despite the differences they were able to build the city together. We arrive in time for dinner. Overnight in Lodz. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Lodz - Warsaw: City Tour This morning we travel to Warsaw, arriving in time to embark upon a full city tour. After WWII, a reconstruction campaign by its citizens resulted in today's meticulous restoration of Warsaw's Old Town with its churches, palaces and market-place. It is an outstanding example of a near-total reconstruction of a span of history covering the 13th to the 20th century. Warsaw has shrugged off its dour Eastern Bloc image, and is finally showing its true colours. The vibrant heart of the largest country in "New Europe", Warsaw is now poised to make is presence felt as a business and cultural hub. We begin our sightseeing with a drive along the Royal Route and a brief orientation drive around the city before beginning our walking tour of the Old Town, a UNESCO protected site. We visit Castle Square, the Uprising Monument, and then drive over to the Praga area for a view of the river. From there go to the Jewish Ghetto area and to Umschlag Platz where we visit the Museum of History of Polish Jews. The museum features a multimedia narrative exhibition about the vibrant Jewish community that flourished in Poland for a thousand years. Overnight in Warsaw. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Warsaw Sightseeing - To Torun Before leaving Warsaw, we'll visit the Warsaw Uprising Museum, dedicated to the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 (we visit today instead of yesterday as the museum is closed for group visits on Sundays). The museum sponsors research into the history of the Uprising, and the history and possessions of the Polish Underground State. It collects and maintains hundreds of artefacts, ranging from weapons used by the insurgents to love letters, in order to present a full picture of the people involved. The museum's stated goals include the creation of an archive of historical information on the Uprising and the recording of the stories and memories of the still living Uprising participants. We then continue our journey to the picturesque medieval town of Torun, a beautiful medieval city in northwestern Poland, situated on the Vistula River. Torun's architecture managed to escape bombing, and as such represents one of the only examples of true Gothic architecture in Poland. At warm times of year Torun's old town is full of street cafes and restaurants where you can eat and drink outdoors and enjoy the medieval atmosphere. Overnight in Torun. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Torun: Nicolaus Copernicus Museum - Gdansk This morning we enjoy the sights of Torun. Its Old Town has been included in UNESCO's list for its impressive 13th century Town Hall, superb churches and historic streets preserving Torun's past glory. We will visit the Nicolaus Copernicus Museum, Copernicus House, which collects materials about the life and work of Copernicus: a library, old prints and books from the time of Copernicus, various editions of his work, "Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres," and models of the astronomical instruments he used. We continue to Gdansk, an absolutely charming place with its tall, narrow buildings, peaked roofs and decorative facades that combine perfectly with the cobblestone streets. The famous Gdansk Shipyards are visible from most parts of the city. During our time in Gdansk we'll visit the marvellous Old Town and its main street -- Dlugi Targ (Long Market). Overnight in Gdansk. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Gdansk Area Tour Its position on the Baltic has historically made Gdansk one of the most important port cities in Northern Europe, and tragically also the scene of a rather disturbing past. World War II was ignited by a dispute over the control of the city. By the end of the war the city lay almost completely in ruins. The German population was expelled and replaced by Poles as the city came under Polish rule and changed its name to Gdansk. However, the impact of its former German ties is still evident. Although most of the old buildings were damaged or destroyed in WWII, they have been painstakingly restored or rebuilt. This morning we head out of town a short distance to visit the Oliwa Cathedral. This Holy Trinity, Blessed Virgin Mary, and St Bernard's Church was first erected as a Cistercian shrine back in the 13th century. Reconstructed in 1350 after a great fire, it re-emerged in the Gothic style, but many of the new fixtures were to be relatively short lived. The Gothic interior was extremely damaged in a 1577 fire and was replaced with the Baroque fixtures we admire today for their beauty and intensity. The Oliwa Cathedral is perhaps best known for its massive, splendid organ. The organ is comprised of over 7,000 pipes and is decorated with movable angels and brightly painted stars. When built, the instrument was the largest in Europe. The main alter is also very impressive, and if the organ is in use, you're sure to be riveted by its magnificent sound! While in Gdansk we'll also visit the European Solidarity Centre, a museum and library devoted to the history of Solidarity, the Polish trade union and civil resistance movement, and other opposition movements of Communist Eastern Europe. The balance of the day is free to enjoy Gdansk. Gdansk is sometimes called the Amber Capital of the World; the surrounding area is the richest known source of this semi-precious stone, and the product can be viewed (and purchased, of course) in many shops in town. In order to maximize your free time in this interesting place, we do not include dinner this evening. Overnight in Gdansk. Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Day 9 Gdansk - Malbork - Olsztyn After breakfast, we drive to Olsztyn. En route, we stop at the Teutonic Knights Castle in Malbork, the largest brick building in Europe and one of Poland's greatest tourist attractions. In the afternoon, we continue to Olsztyn, a town located in a region of lakes and forests. The most attractive part of the city is the old town, encircled by a set of fortified walls. Overnight in Olsztyn. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Olsztyn - Olsztynek - Warsaw After breakfast, we return to Warsaw. On the way, we visit the Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek, site of the Museum of Folk Architecture, one of the oldest open-air museums in Europe. The museum contains many interesting examples of folk architecture, including houses, barns, windmills and other traditional buildings. A particular attraction of the park are the interiors of old houses, the evangelical church, a blacksmith, a pottery stand, a windmill as well as various temporary displays representing items of traditional craftsmanship and modern folk art and handicraft from the region. Continue to Warsaw. Overnight in Warsaw. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 11 Warsaw, Poland - Vilnius, Lithuania Today we fly* from Warsaw to Vilnius and transfer to our hotel. "Narrow cobblestone streets and an orgy of Baroque: almost like a Jesuit city somewhere in the middle of Latin America," wrote the author Czeslaw Milosz of pre-war Vilnius. Soviet-era satellite suburbs aside, it's a description which still rings true today. Despite being the capital of the medieval Lithuanian state, Vilnius was occupied by Poland between the wars and was inhabited mainly by Poles and Jews who played such a prominent role in the city's life that it was known as the "Northern Jerusalem". Vilnius is still a cosmopolitan place -- around twenty percent of its population is Polish and another twenty percent is Russian -- though with just 543,000 inhabitants it has an almost village-like atmosphere, making it an easy place to get to know. * NOTE: Depending on final group size and flight schedules (which can be erratic), this journey may take place overland (by private bus). If so, we apologize for the backtracking and inconvenience. Overnight in Vilnius. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12 Vilnius & Trakai This morning we have a walking tour of Vilnius. Sweden, Poland, France and Russia have all ruled Vilnius in the past, and today we will witness the influences that this has had on this beautiful city. The Old Town is one of the largest in Europe, with nearly 1,500 historic buildings of note built over several centuries creating a splendid blend of many different architectural styles. Our walking tour will take us to Cathedral Square in the heart of the city. Inside the cathedral we see the famous chapel of Saint Kazimieras, considered an architectural gem. Rising in the distance behind Cathedral Square is the Gedimino Tower, once part of the 14th century defense system. We will also see the baroque Peter and Paul Church, originally built in the 14th century. The Gates of Dawn, on the eastern side of the Old Town, were one of the original nine gates into the city. The original Gothic defensive wall was once over 2 km (1.5 miles) long. From this remaining gate we will walk down through the streets of the old town. Nearby is the Jewish Quarter, with its cobblestone lanes and hidden courtyards. While in Vilnius we'll also visit the KGB Museum (aka the Museum of Genocide Victims). For Lithuanians, the KGB Museum symbolises the 50-year-long Soviet occupation. During World War II it was the site of Gestapo headquarters and later of the KGB. The museum building is as intact as it was in 1991, when the KGB left the premises. You will see KGB rooms authentically furnished and secret KGB spying equipment. After a full morning and a break for lunch, we we'll travel to Trakai, a former capital of Lithuania. The town, situated on the shores of several lakes, has two prominent castles built to fend off German knights in the 14th century.* Trakai is famous for its population of Kara-Kalpak people. Brought to Trakai from the Crimean Peninsula by the Grand Duke Vytautas in the late 14th century, the Kara-Kalpak still hold their Jewish religious services in the yellow Kinessa, built in 1812. Our tour here includes a visit to the Trakai Historical Museum, housed within the main rooms of Trakai's island castle. * PLEASE NOTE that the castle will be under renovation until 2027, during which time specific parts of the complex will have limited access and certain parts will be closed on a rotational basis. Parts of the exterior will also be under scaffolding. Though it is unpredictable, should a visit become impractical, we may substitute the visit with something else of interest in the city or the surrounds. Overnight in Vilnius. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Vilnius - Siauliai, Lithuania - Rundale Palace, Lativia - Riga Today we trave to the Hill of Crosses, located just north of the small industrial city of Siauliai. Siauliai is the Lithuanian national pilgrimage center, and a city of famous cultural traditions and legends. On a small hill stand thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and act as a compelling resistance memorial to the German and Soviet occupation. Today newlyweds often come here after their wedding ceremony to ask for God's blessing. We then proceed to the border and continue on to Riga stopping at Rundale Palace in time for lunch. We then visit the palace, an architectural pearl created by architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, designer of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. Construction of the palace was completed only in 1768 and now it is a magnificent sample of baroque style with elements of classicism, with crystal chandeliers, rich stucco moulding, silk wallpaper, collection of paintings, and frescoes by Italian artists. This is the place where leaders of the state, wishing to receive high guests with really regal honours, hosted the royal couple from Denmark when they visited in Latvia. We continue to Riga for dinner and overnight. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 14 Riga: City Touring Today we will enjoy a walking tour of the Old Town of Riga, getting us to some of the top sights and giving us a real feel for the city. Over the last decade Riga has been going through a restoration phase, revitalizing many of its faded art nouveau buildings into pristine gems. While these buildings can be found throughout the central downtown area, the best place to see them is in a neighbourhood of streets centered around Alberta Street. Riga literally has hundreds of buildings in this flamboyant style as it experienced a period of unprecedented wealth at the beginning of the 20th century when art nouveau was all the rage in Europe. While exploring this part of the city we will visit the Art Nouveau Museum, which is a completely restored art nouveau apartment. Our walk will include a stop at the mighty Freedom Monument, dedicated to those who fought for Latvia’s independence. We will pass by the Latvian National Opera House as well as the Powder Tower. Kalku Street is the main 'semi-pedestrian' thoroughfare, and it slices straight through Old Town leading us to Livu Square, created after the destruction caused by World War II. Today this is one of the Old Town’s most bright and cheerful corners. Bastion Hill Park runs along the northeastern edge of the city. Once the old city’s fortifications, Bastion Hill was replaced with this romantic park full of gardens, canals, and ornate bridges. The park makes a great transition space between downtown Riga and the historic center. Working our way through the backstreets of the Old Town we come to a fixture of Riga’s skyline, St. Peter’s Church. The tallest church in the city, this large Gothic church dates back to 1209, although little of the original church is actually left. Another of Riga’s enchanting city squares is the Dome Square which sits out below the impressive Riga Cathedral. Throughout the city of Riga there are a lot of exceptionally well-preserved buildings, but the Three Brothers are quite unique in that they are the oldest residential buildings in the city. These three adjoining buildings date from between the 15th to 17th centuries and are home to local craftsmen. We will pass by Riga Castle, which today houses the offices of the Latvian president. One of the last remaining segments of the city’s defenses is the Swedish Gate, a small gateway through what looks like a row of traditional residences. We will stop at the Town Hall Square to see the iconic House of the Blackheads where we admire the stunning design of its facade. Built for members of a merchant guild known as the Blackheads in the 14th Century, this is one of Riga’s most picturesque landmarks. This afternoon is yours free to explore. Overnight in Riga. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Riga: City Touring Today we will get to some of the landmarks which lie outside the city’s Old Town, including a drive through modern Riga. We will start with a visit to the massive Central Market. This visit will help to give you a sense of what local life is like in today's Riga. This bustling indoor & outdoor market focuses on several large 1920s pavilions and the area around them. Here we discover plenty of local Latvian goods, from meats and fish to loads of other locally grown produce. We continue with a panoramic drive around Riga that will take in some of the most famous sights. Our route along the embankment of the River Daugava provides us with wonderful views of the city, and we will drive through the modern part of the city where we see the University Building, the Academy of Arts and the central train station. Along Riga’s riverfront we will come to the Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum which details the city’s history of the Holocaust. Set inside an outdoor courtyard, this museum details what happened to the local Jewish population during the city’s Nazi occupation. The exhibits here focus on individuals' stories and photographs. Built during Latvia’s period under Soviet rule, the towering figure of the Latvian Academy of Sciences is hard to miss. Here we will take the elevator up to its observation deck for great views of Riga with the church tower visible amongst the skyline. You will have some free time this afternoon before our evening meal. Overnight in Riga. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 16 Riga, Latvia - Tallinn, Estonia This morning we depart Riga for Tallinn, making a lunch stop in Parnu, "the Summer Capital of Estonia." From the middle of the 19th century, Parnu developed as a resort town with its good beaches and relatively good weather. During the Soviet era, Parnu's guesthouses, inns and hotels were converted to sanatoria. We continue to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Historically, Tallinn has been attacked, sacked, razed and pillaged on numerous occasions. Although extensively bombed by Soviet air forces during the latter stages of World War II, much of the medieval Old Town still retains its charm. The Tallinn Old Town became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1997. Overnight in Tallinn. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 17 Tallinn: City Tour Today we have a guided WALKING tour of this important Baltic Sea harbour city. We begin with a visit to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, built in the nineteenth century. The cathedral dominates the Lossi Plats, and is an imposing testament to the Russian imperialist influence. We also visit the Dominican Monastery, which played an important role in bringing Christianity to Estonia. We have the opportunity to visit the Toompea Castle site, a 13th century castle where the current parliament of Estonia holds its sessions. In the immediate area we will also visit the Toomkirik Lutheran cathedral, founded in 1233, with its impressive carved tombs inside. This afternoon you will have some free time to stroll through the picturesque Old Town with its jumble of medieval buildings, turrets and walls. The market in town is also very colourful and lively. Overnight in Tallinn. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 18 Tallinn, Estonia - Helsinki, Finland Today we take a fast ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki (HAVE YOUR PASSPORTS HANDY!). Helsinki is situated at the arrowhead of a peninsula, surrounded by an archipelago of 315 islands, perfectly placed between its two great trading cousins, Stockholm and Moscow. From a European perspective, Helsinki is relatively young (450 years), yet it is Finland's sixth-oldest town. The Swedes, who extended their empire into Finland in 1155, founded the city of 'Helsingfors' (the name still used by the Swedes) in 1550 when King Gustav Vasa needed a site for a strategic, competitively placed trading port. It languished as a coastal backwater until Imperialist Russia invaded in 1809. On arrival we'll have a walking orientation tour of Helsinki. Overnight in Helsinki. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 19 Helsinki: City Tour Affectionately known as the 'Daughter of the Baltic', Helsinki is sited at the arrowhead of a peninsula, surrounded by an archipelago of 315 islands, perfectly placed between its two great trading cousins, Stockholm and Moscow. In a European perspective, Helsinki is relatively young (450 years), yet it is Finland's sixth-oldest town. Today we will enjoy a comprehensive walking tour taking in the most important and interesting parts of Helsinki, such as the historical centre and the diplomatic quarters, the Presidential Palace, City Hall, the Parliament building, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House. We stop at Senate Square, and, if possible, Temppeliaukio Church. During the afternoon you can explore the busy market place or the many souvenir shops close to the harbour. Fans of modern architecture and/or libraries may enjoy a visit to the Oodi Helsinki Library, which occupies a hugely significant site in central Helsinki: facing the steps of the Finnish parliament building. The upper surface of the canopy structure has been used to create a large public terrace, from which one can look directly over the square to the steps and main entrance of parliament. The terrace doubles the amount of public outdoor space provided for library visitors and creates a new destination where people can meet and observe the city below. Overnight in Helsinki. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 20 Departure from Helsinki Today we depart from Helsinki. HYVAA MATKAA!! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Breakfast and dinner (hotels & local restaurants) daily. All accommodation, transport (including internal flight), sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters. Airport transfers for land & air customers and for early arriving / late departing land & air customers who book their extra hotel nights through us.

Tour Leader gratuities, lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), domestic and international air taxes (if applicable), excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on optional meal costs and shopping.

Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered in spring, summer and fall the most popular of which is are spring and fall when temperatures are relatively mild and crowds thinner. Showers quite possible in spring and fall, somewhat less so in summer though can occur any time. Summers can be humid though long daylight hours maximize exploration.

Transport and Travel Conditions Land transport throughout by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on ultimate group size (see 'group size'). Though we will have a couple of full bus days there are plenty of stops of interest. Hydrofoil crossing to Finland. This trip is typical of most of our European tours, which are ambitious and involve full days of travel and sightseeing. While we don't have any actual strenuous activity (ie hiking) built into the program, you will do a lot of walking on this trip. These walks will mostly be in the form of walking tours of towns and cities and short walks to dinner. Being Europe, and a hilly/mountainous area, cobbles, uneven surfaces, and slopes/stairs are common. If you are accustomed to typical "bus tours," which rely heavily on vehicular transport for all sightseeing activities, you should be aware that this tour is considerably more active.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

estonia_saaremaa-island_kuressaare_bridge

Uncover the cultural wonders and historical riches of three fascinating countries on an 8-day tour through Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Wander the beautiful Old Town of Vilnius and learn about its complex modern history. Discover Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture and feast on Latvian cuisine at the city’s vast Central Market. Unwind in a log cabin set among evergreen forest on Saaremaa Island, sharing a meal of local favourites with your fellow travellers, and finish in Estonia’s cool capital, Tallinn. This tour takes in historic cities, a pristine wooded island and unique Baltic cultures – all while taking you well off the typical tourist trail.

Trip overview

  • See the best of the Baltics in a week – soaking up centuries of history, getting a taste of the region’s hearty cuisine and meeting plenty of locals along the way.
  • Join a local guide to discover the best bits of Vilnius, from its legendary beginnings and UNESCO-listed Old Town to its tiny independent republic, Uzupis.
  • Discover the treasures of Riga – both historic and culinary – on a walking tour through the cobbled streets of the Old Town followed by a Latvian lunch at the lively Central Market.

  • See some of the region’s finest art and stroll through manicured gardens at Tallinn’s Kadriorg Palace Art Museum, a grand baroque building built by Peter the Great.
  • We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train and bus stations and hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones.
  • This trip covers a lot in a week, so there are some long drives. However, all travel is in comfortable private vehicle or public bus, with one ferry ride. Please review the itinerary for details.

Labas! Welcome to Lithuania. Tonight you’ll attend an important welcome meeting at 6 pm at the hotel. Afterwards, you’ll have the option to join your leader and new travel companions for dinner at a local restaurant. If you arrive early, spend some time getting to know Vilnius. This charming capital is remarkably green and oozes history – but hip bars, cool cafes and a plethora of street art add a modern twist that makes it a joy to explore.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

This morning, join the group for a city tour led by a local guide. Pass through Cathedral Square and the UNESCO-listed Old Town, and learn about the legend of Vilnius' creation and the prestigious history of Vilnius University. Continue to the painting of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, a famed painting of the Virgin Mary that adorns the 16th-century city gates. The afternoon is yours to spend as you wish. Maybe take a hike to Gediminas Castle Tower or check out expansive views from the lofty TV tower – the latter is Lithuania’s tallest building and the location of a history-making event on 13 January 1991, when Lithuania gained independence from the Soviet Union. Alternatively, you could spend an hour or two exploring the tiny independent republic of Uzupis, which was declared in 1997. Ask your leader for more recommendations.

Hop aboard a comfortable public bus to Riga, Latvia. On arrival, transfer to the hotel, located a short walk from the symbolic Freedom Monument – or, as she's affectionately known to the locals, Milda. Head out on a guided walk with your leader, navigating the narrow, cobbled streets to discover the key sights of the Old Town. You’ll stop for lunch at the sprawling Central Market, housed within five repurposed Zepellin hangars. Countless stalls feature everything from local pastries and traditional Latvian soups to tempura and fried chicken. Opt to try a few local specialities – such as Riga Black Balsam, an herbal liqueur – before digging into a meal made from fresh, seasonal Latvian produce.

  • Riga - Central Market Visit
  • Riga - Leader-led orientation walk

Today’s travel time is approximately 4 hours.

Enjoy a free day getting to know Riga at your own pace. Most of the Art Nouveau architecture for which the city is famed is located in a neighbourhood known as 'the quiet centre'. A leisurely stroll along the canal that intersects the city's central park is another popular optional outing, as is a visit to one of its many museums. The National Museum of Art, located only a few minutes' walk from the hotel, is particularly impressive. Perhaps take in views of the city with a drink at a rooftop cafe (your leader will be able to make some recommendations) or, if the weather is right, make the trip to the popular beach resort town of Jurmala (30 minutes by train).

  • Riga - Beer Spa - EUR151
  • Riga - St Peter's Tower - EUR9
  • Riga - Riverboat Cruise - EUR20
  • Riga - Museum of War - Free

Rise early for the trip to Saaremaa island, the largest island in Estonia, by private minivan and public ferry. This heavily forested island is known among Estonians as the perfect place to relax in nature, and you’ll see soon why. Arrive in the island's south by late afternoon and transfer to your accommodation for the evening. You’ll stay in a cosy locally-owned property, surrounded by forests – a lovely spot to unplug after a few days of city escapades. A private room in a charming log cabin will be your home for the night. You may like to take a walk in the woods and work up an appetite for a dinner of hearty local favourites, perhaps Baltic herrings and potatoes with dill to fill you up.

  • Cabin (1 night)

Today’s travel time is approximately 6 hours.

NOTE: Our farm stay won't be available for the departure on 16th JUNE, 2024 so instead our group will stay in a hotel for the night.

After breakfast, head to the biggest town on the island, Kuressaare. One of the biggest draws is Kuressaare Castle – one of Estonia’s best preserved fortresses, complete with terracotta conical spires and a shimmering moat. Opt to spend some time exploring the castle grounds and accompanying museum to learn more about life on Saaremaa throughout the ages. Later, hop on a public bus to the Estonian capital of Tallinn. Tonight's accommodation is in Tallinn's atmospheric Old Town, which is packed with tempting dining options for your free evening.

Today’s travel time is approximately 4.5 hours.

Today, your leader will get you acquainted with the key sights of Tallinn on an orientation walk. Then you’ll take a tram to the outskirts of the city to visit Kadriorg Palace Art Museum. Commissioned by Peter the Great in the early 18th century, this fine example of Baroque architecture features fabulous frescoes, decorative stucco and elaborate, colourful gardens – and of course, an impressive collection of early European and Russian art. Return later that day (your ticket is open so when you head back is up to you), perhaps opting to hire a bike for some active sightseeing, or continuing the cultural immersion at more of the city’s museums. Tonight, you might like to head out with the group for one last Estonian meal together, washed down with a glass of kali, a fizzy drink made from boiled rye bread.

  • Tallinn - Kadriorg Palace Art Museum
  • Tallinn - Kiek in de Kök Tower Museum - EUR12
  • Tallinn - Estonian History Museum - EUR12
  • Tallinn - City Bike Tour - EUR28
  • Tallinn - TV Tower - EUR16
  • Tallinn - City Museum - EUR8
  • Tallinn - Peter The Great Museum - EUR5

Time to say farewell to your fellow travellers – your trip ends this morning after breakfast. "A land of unspoiled countryside and splendid buildings, and home to 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 23 national parks, Poland is rich in culture, history and natural beauty"

Steven, Travel Director

Enjoy the music of Chopin in Warsaw

The city where Chopin was first discovered provides the perfect backdrop to his masterpieces. Take your pick of many museums, galleries, terraces and parks that still perform concerts daily in honor of this Polish composer and virtuoso, two centuries on.

Journey to the little-known district of Praga in Warsaw

One of the best things to do in Warsaw is to leave the well-trodden Old Town and visit the right bank district of Praga. The once derelict neighborhood has become a favorite among students and artists alike. Explore the gritty bohemia's abandoned factories, now reclaimed and transformed into communal cultural spaces, street art, markets and bars.

Journey to Gdansk

For a change of scenery, head to the port city of Gdansk that bears little resemblance to Poland’s urban centres. Stroll through Main Town and be dazzled by the colorful shop facades of Long Market, an ornate Golden Gate and the bronzed body of a sea God in Neptune Fountain.

Visit Westerplatte, the place where WWII began

A scattering of shelled bunkers and burnt-out ruins contain reminders of the Battle of Westerplatte. This memorial site and monument will whisper Poland’s forlorn story to you. See the lighthouse where the first warning shots were fired and stand where the few brave Polish soldiers tried in vain to defend against the German invasion.

Explore Wieliczka Salt Mines

A short drive from Krakow is a subterranean labyrinth to behold. Descend the many steps and discover an underground world so remarkable in size it contains lakes and a chapel made of salt - right down to its chandeliers. One of the Poland attractions you will have to see with your own two eyes to believe.

Our top 5 things to do in Poland

Walk through the artistic underbelly of Warsaw and stand in the spot where WWII began. These are just some of the captivating experiences served up by Trafalgar in Poland.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum

The largest of the Nazi concentration camps and the resting place of over one million men, women and children, Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum is a somber place of reflection. Come face-to-face with the realities of the Holocaust with a walk through these infamous grounds, where you will uncover a dark time in humanity that’s not to be forgotten.

Galeria Raster

Founded by two art critics, this independent gallery is a place known for encouraging participation in culture. Immerse in the excitement of Poland’s next generation with film screenings, concerts, countless artworks and a self-publishing bookstore all found at Galeria Raster. This is the heart of the local contemporary art scene.

Krolikarnia

Fresh respite is found in the ‘Green District’ of Mokotów and the classicist palace that calls it home. Come to Krolikarnia to see the country’s largest collection of sculptures and relax in the leafy estate grounds, where idyllic reading spots and garden performances are plentiful.

Best museums in Poland

A Trafalgar tour through Poland will take you back in time to World War II and forward in time to Poland’s next generation of artists. It is through these museums that you will understand the many chapters of Poland's remarkable story.

The humble pierogi dumplings have been comforting the Polish since the 13th century, enduring and evolving as the years went by. Savoury, salty, spicy, sweet - these half-moon delights will not fail you. From the traditional to the more creative, chefs around the country will surprise you with many moreish fillings.

With a name meaning ‘hunter’s stew’, it’s unsurprising the meal of bigos is meaty and hearty. Expect cabbage, sauerkraut, finely chopped meats and the odd splash of beer or wine stewed for hours. Let this traditional single pot meal warm you on a cool Polish night.

Placki Ziemniaczane

Popular in World War II when there was little to eat, today these potato pancakes are considered a special treat. Try one - or many - at an outdoor market or festival topped with a generous dollop of sour cream or a sweet condiment.

Best food in Poland

Our tours of Poland is complete with many tastes of its simple - and simply delicious - national dishes. You will quickly understand why the Polish say ‘smacznego’ (meaning ‘enjoy your meal’) at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

What to pack for Poland

People packing for a tour

Polish phrasebook

Polish is the official language of Poland, so pack a phrasebook to help you learn a few words. If you can’t spare the space, download them to your Google Translate app offline.

A secure day bag

Though Poland is considered a safe destination, it isn't immune to pickpockets and petty crime. A good quality zipper bag or travel wallet will keep cash, cards and important items safe.

Poland is a massive country and on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Polish history and culture.

A filtered water bottle

Polish water is officially safe to drink, but the plumbing can affect the quality. Many locals and tourists use bottled water; take the cheaper and more eco-friendly option of a reusable bottle with built in filtration.

Some WWII reading

Whether you’re a history buff or not, a refresher on the world wars will make for a richer experience of the significant and soul stirring sites you will visit in Poland.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

What’s the best time to visit Poland?

The best times to visit Poland are typically during the spring or fall, regardless of the duration of your stay. Spring brings pleasant warmth and relatively lower rainfall, making it an ideal season to explore the country. However, the autumn scenery in Poland is exceptionally beautiful and often more budget-friendly. If you plan to explore Poland’s seaside, summer is the prime period, of course.

Poland, baltic states agree to creation of protective ‘drone wall’.

Multiple nations bordering Russia, including the Baltics, Finland, Norway, and Poland, are creating what they called a “drone wall” air defense system to help defend their collective borders.

Agne Bilotaite, Lithuania’s Interior Minister, told the Baltic News Service , the multinational partnership would create “a drone border from Norway to Poland,” which would “protect our border with the help of drones and other technologies.”

Added Bilotaite: “Not only physical infrastructure, surveillance systems, but also using drones and other technologies that would allow us to also protect ourselves from provocations by unfriendly countries, and prevent contraband.”

Lithuania's Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite stands at a podium in front of her nation's flag after Poland and the Baltic states interior ministers meeting in Warsaw, Poland.

She said the plan is still in its formative stages, with no exact timeline for completion.

Earlier this month, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed Poland had signed on to join the European Sky Shield Initiative . The project involves 21 NATO countries, and will establish an Iron Dome -like all-weather system to take out incoming missiles and drones.

The announcement comes as Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski claimed the United States would carry out strikes on Russian troops on Ukrainian soil in the event the Kremlin opts to use nuclear weapons.

The Israeli missile defense system "Iron Dome" on display in 2010.

“The Americans have told the Russians that if you explode a nuke, even if it doesn’t kill anybody, we will hit all your [positions] in Ukraine with conventional weapons, we’ll destroy all of them,”  Sikorski told The Guardian .

He said China and India have also warned Russia against the use of nukes.

“And it’s no child’s play,” he said, “because if that taboo [of using nuclear weapons] were also to be breached, like the taboo of not changing borders by force, China knows that Japan and [South] Korea would go nuclear, and presumably they don’t want that.”

Baltic states join with Norway, Finland and Poland to build ‘drone wall’ against Russia

Russia announced plans to change its maritime borders in the baltic sea.

The Baltic states announced plans alongside Norway, Finland and Poland to construct a "drone wall" along their shared borders with Russia on Sunday.

Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets said the technology is capable of both detecting and repelling drones, adding that his country plans to install the barrier along its entire eastern border as well as around its major cities.

"As we can see on the Ukrainian front, there is a constant technological race between adversaries and new ways to use drones in warfare. The same is true for the various drones that people have access to. Being even a small step ahead of the opponent leads to greater success, but this success can be measured in days, as countermeasures are discovered with alarming speed for each measure, and the cycle continues," Läänemets said.

"There is no question whether this is necessary, as even the smallest drones have already proven their worth as reconnaissance and offensive weapons," he added.

KYIV'S FORCES ARE UP AGAINST A CONCERTED RUSSIAN PUSH IN EASTERN UKRAINE, A MILITARY OFFICIAL SAYS

The announcement comes days after Russia itself announced that it plans to change its maritime borders in the Baltic Sea. Lithuania's foreign minister responded last week, calling it an "obvious escalation" that must be met with an "appropriately firm response."

Russia's Defense Ministry suggested updating the coordinates used to measure the strip of territorial waters off its mainland coast and that of its islands in the Baltic Sea. The existing coordinates were approved in 1985, the ministry says, adding they were "based on small-scale nautical navigation maps," and don't correspond to the "modern geographical situation."

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said Russia had signed a United Nations convention that regulates how to make such changes. "Both we and Finland assume that Russia – which is a signatory party to that convention – lives up to that responsibility," he said, according to Swedish news agency TT.

If Russians were to challenge borders, "then Russia violates a U.N. convention, then Russia has the whole world against it," Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said, according to Finnish broadcaster YLE.

Baltics, Poland, other countries agree to create 'drone wall'

A group of countries, including the Baltic states, Poland, Norway, and Finland, have agreed to create a "drone wall" to help defend their collective borders, Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite said in an interview with the Lithuanian media outlet BNS published on May 24.

The announcement comes after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said earlier in May that Poland had signed a contract to join the European Sky Shield Initiative , which currently includes 21 countries. The initiative aims to create an Iron Dome-style air defense system covering NATO members across Europe.

As Lithuania was a founding member of the initiative, which was formed in October 2022, the suggested "drone wall" is a different proposal.

"This is a completely new thing—a drone border from Norway to Poland, the purpose of which would be to protect our border with the help of drones and other technologies," Bilotaite said.

"Not only physical infrastructure, surveillance systems, but also using drones and other technologies that would allow us to also protect ourselves from provocations by unfriendly countries, and prevent contraband."

The proposal would utilize both its own drones and anti-drone systems, Bilotaite said.

The plan is still in its formative stages, she said, and there is no concrete timeline when it will be implemented.

"It is clear that if we agree on common solutions, we could apply for European funds, if we present (the) need as a region, there is a high probability that we will receive funding from the European Commission," Bilotaite said.

Amid Russia's full-scale war on Ukraine and its widespread usage of drones and missiles to strike civilian targets, countries on NATO's eastern flank have sought to improve their air defense capabilities against potential Russian threats.

An ex-Wall Street banker who visited every European country picked 5 underrated ones he'd recommend over Spain, France, Italy, or Greece

  • Travel blogger Lee Abbamonte has visited all 50 sovereign countries in Europe.
  • As Americans gear up for summer travel, Abbamonte recommends avoiding certain travel hot spots.
  • He said to check out Eastern Europe and Norway and avoid most of France, Italy, Spain, and Greece.

Insider Today

If you're an American planning to visit Europe this summer, you'll be one of millions of other US tourists heading across the pond.

With the start of summer around the corner, many have already booked trips to what travel blogger Lee Abbamonte dubs the Big Four — Spain, Italy, Greece, and France.

Abbamonte, 45, is about as well-traveled as it gets. He told Business Insider he was inspired to travel as much as he could after 9/11 , when many of his colleagues at a Wall Street firm owned by financial services giant Cantor Fitzgerald died during the collapse of the Twin Towers .

After 2001, Abbamonte went on to visit every country in the world, the North and South Poles, and every state in the US .

Abbamonte said his preferred method of travel — taking a road trip — has allowed him to visit enchanting parts of Europe that the typical American tourists may completely miss.

"You're on your own schedule," he said. "The roads are good, it's easy to drive, a rental car is relatively cheap, and you have ultimate freedom."

One of Abbamonte's favorite regions to explore by car is Eastern Europe, which is struggling to attract international tourists due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. In 2023, the European Travel Commission reported that after the outbreak of COVID-19 brought tourism to a halt, countries closest to Russia and Ukraine, particularly those in the Baltic region, have been the slowest to recover pre-pandemic tourism levels.

Nevertheless, here are five European countries that Abbamonte said offer fewer crowds and more perks, including yummy food, beautiful architecture, and stunning scenery.

Plus, if you've already booked your trip to Spain, Italy, Greece, and France, he highlighted some hidden gem spots off the beaten path.

There's more to Romania than meets the eye, according to Abbamonte.

poland and baltic tours

Abbamonte recommends only a brief pit stop in Romania's capital, Bucharest, before driving through "awesome" regions like Transylvania, known for storied castles and medieval villages lined with cobblestone streets like Brasov.

"It's a great road trip country," he said.

Many people also don't realize Romania isn't landlocked, Abbamonte added, and actually has an epic coastline along the Black Sea with stunning port cities like Constanta.

Norway is beautiful in the winter, but it's a hiker's paradise in the summer, he said.

poland and baltic tours

Norway in the winter may delight snowshoers and cross-country skiers. But Abbamonte, who isn't a fan of any kind of skiing, said the best time of the year to visit the Scandinavian country is in the summer.

"It has some of the best hiking in the world, especially in the summer," he said, name-checking the iconic boulder hike Kjeragbolten, the cliffside at Preikestolen, and the scenic lake views at Trolltunga in particular. "It's just awesome from top to bottom, and you just kind of get in a car and drive. It's amazing."

Another of his favorite Norwegian spots is the Lofoten Islands, an archipelago north of the Arctic Circle known for beaches, fishing, hikes, and mountain/rock climbing, and that travel experts previously told BI usually flies under the radar.

If you visit the Czech Republic, Abbamonte advised skipping Prague and making a beeline for smaller villages.

poland and baltic tours

Though Abbamonte said Prague is one of his "favorite cities in the world," he said that to truly appreciate the Czech Republic — which most Czechs call Czechia — you have to get out of the capital.

"There's so much cool stuff outside Prague to see, and most people never leave the capital," he said.

Like Romania, Abbamonte added, the Czech Republic is an "awesome" place to take a road trip through many picturesque villages and small towns.

One of his go-to stops is Český Krumlov, known for its medieval architecture, river, and gardens.

Poland is beautiful and chock-full of 'life-altering' historic sites, he said.

poland and baltic tours

In Abbamonte's experience, a lot of Americans sleep on Poland.

But the Eastern European country is worth visiting, he said, to explore urban areas like the river-side city Krakow and the port city Gdansk, as well as the capital, Warsaw, which was "rebuilt" after World War II.

Abbamonte also said one of the most valuable and emotional experiences people can have in Poland is touring concentration camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau .

"That's life-altering stuff, especially if you have relatives who were a part of it," he said. "I'm half Jewish, so it was really striking for me to be there knowing that some of my relatives' descendants fled to the United States."

Serbia is worth a trip for its capital, Belgrade, alone, Abbamonte feels.

poland and baltic tours

Abbamonte is a fan of the entire Balkan region, which includes Bosnia, Montenegro, Slovenia, and others.

However, Serbia stands out to Abbamonte because he finds the capital city of Belgrade "to be the singular most underrated city in Europe."

His expectations of an Eastern European city that has experienced so much violence in recent history were not high, he said.

"But then you get there, and it's beautiful," he added. "It's right on the river, it has great restaurants, a great bohemian scene, and a lot of coffee shop, and bars."

But at night, the city truly comes alive, Abbamonte said.

"It turns into this raging nightlife place, and it's beautiful," he said.

Serbia also has "beautiful mountain towns," Abbamonte added, which offer more chances to meet friendly and insightful locals.

"I find the whole country to be fascinating and the people to be interesting because they have dealt with a lot," he said.

Abbamonte tells people to seek out hidden-gem spots within heavily touristy countries including Spain, Italy, Greece, and France.

poland and baltic tours

Abbamonte also has plenty of off-the-beaten-path tips for the handful of countries he calls the Big Four: France, Spain, Greece, and Italy.

If you're booked to go to France this summer, he recommended visiting Biarritz, a coastal town close to the border with Spain.

"Really only French people go there," he said. "But that's why I like it — because it has a real local old-money, Grace Kelly kind of feel."

In Spain, one of Abbamonte's favorite places to visit is A Coruña, a port city in northwest Galicia.

"It's a beautiful coastal town that nobody goes to, and it's awesome," he said.

Abbamonte also suggested checking out the smaller Italian villages of San Gimignano and Montalcino. If you're looking for the Lake Como experience, he added, there are plenty of other lakes in the Dolomite Mountains that are just as beautiful.

In Greece, Abbamonte said Meteora in Thessaly is "otherworldly," with monasteries perched on rock cliffs, and US tourists sleep on a northern city called Thessaloniki.

"Most people have never been there or have ever heard of it or can spell it," he said. "It's a very cool city, pretty cheap, and interesting."

As for Greek islands, he recommended Hydra, which is quiet and car-free.

"It's just goats, donkeys, and walking," Abbamonte said. "It's a very cool place to go."

Poland Will Analyse if It Can Reopen One Crossing With Belarus, Says PM

Reuters

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland may reopen one border crossing with Belarus, the prime minister said on Friday, in a bid to help businesses in the country's east who have taken a hit from the closure of checkpoints due to tense relations between Warsaw and Minsk.

Poland's border with Belarus has been a flashpoint since migrants started flocking there in 2021, after Minsk, a close Russian ally, opened travel agencies in the Middle East offering a new unofficial route into Europe - a move the European Union said was designed to create a crisis.

Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, relations have become even more strained, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Saturday that Poland would spend around 10 billion zlotys($2.55 billion) on securing the frontier.

"We need to analyse whether it is possible to unblock one crossing," Tusk told an election rally in the eastern city of Bialystok on Friday.

"I will not make this decision if the military and border guard commands have a clearly negative opinion that it may have a negative, massive impact on our security."

He said the crossing he would consider opening would be Bobrowniki. At present, four of the six crossings with Belarus are completely closed.

The Border Guard has reported larger numbers of migrants trying to cross the border illegally in recent weeks.
