Drink Among Giants: Redwood Empire Whiskey Takes California Whiskey to New Heights

California’s Largest Whiskey Producer Introduces Bottled in Bond Collection from Spring 2016 Season

GRATON, Calif.--( BUSINESS WIRE )--Redwood Empire Whiskey announces the release of its first collection of Bottled in Bond whiskeys: Redwood Empire Rocket Top Straight Rye Whiskey and Redwood Empire Grizzly Beast Straight Bourbon Whiskey . These unique Bottled in Bond expressions continue to define Redwood Empire as a notable whiskey producer in the long-standing tradition of American spirits.

Both Rocket Top Rye and Grizzly Beast Bourbon were produced under the strict tenets of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 and distilled in the spring of 2016 at Redwood Empire’s West Sonoma County distillery by master distiller Jeff Duckhorn. Both whiskeys were aged for five years and bottled at 100 proof. Only 500 cases of each expression were produced. These limited offerings have a suggested retail price of $79.99/750 ml.

“We’re thrilled to introduce our first Bonded Bourbon (Grizzly Giant) and Rye (Rocket Top),” said founder and proprietor Derek Benham. “We started the Redwood Empire Whiskey project in 2011, first introducing our blended straight whiskey (Lost Monarch), then our Rye (Emerald Giant), and finally our Bourbon (Pipe Dream) in 2019. We are careful and patient with the way we make and age our whiskeys. The first release of our Redwood Empire Bonded Bourbon and Rye is ten years in the making, a testimony to the adage that many good things take time. We craft all our whiskeys with that in mind, hopefully providing a moment of pleasure for those who choose to have them in their lives.”

Redwood Empire controlled production from grain-to-glass for these two distinctive whiskeys. Duckhorn and his team delivered complexity and character through careful and thoughtful decisions from the selection of grains and unique mash bills to the significant cuts of heads and tails during distillation. The temperate weather conditions of Northern California allow a slow, even flavor extraction from the barrels throughout the year which imbues Redwood Empire whiskeys with their signature style.

“A Bottled in Bond-designated whiskey shares the most important information about its origins with whiskey lovers,” explains Master Distiller Jeff Duckhorn. “The ‘who’, the ‘what’, the ‘how old’ and the ‘where.’ These whiskeys are a time capsule back to 2016 and the culmination of our team’s hard work, patience and dedication. I am thrilled to finally get to share them with whiskey aficionados.”

AT A GLANCE

Redwood Empire Bottled in Bond Rocket Top Straight Rye Whiskey 87% rye, 7% malted barley, 6% wheat

Straight rye, aged minimum five years in 53-gallon American White Oak barrels, primarily toasted and charred to level 3. With a high percentage of rye, the result are aromas of sandalwood, cloves, parsnip, and dry leaves with a savory palate of rich malt, black pepper, coffee grounds, and leather. Rocket Top is named for the 365-foot coastal redwood in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

Redwood Empire Bottled in Bond Grizzly Beast Straight Bourbon Whiskey 69% corn, 22% rye, 5% malted barley, 4% wheat

Straight Bourbon whiskey, aged minimum five years in 53-gallon American White Oak barrels, primarily toasted and charred to level 3. Aromas of plump raspberry, brown sugar and cinnamon-spiced walnuts open into a rich, full mouth of salted caramel, buttermilk, and orange zest. Grizzly Beast gets its name from two giants: Grizzly Giant, a giant Sequoia in Yosemite National Park, and Mattole Beast, a massive 375-foot coastal redwood in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

Caramel | Oak | Vanilla | Light maple | Classic bourbon aroma with little fanfare

Roasted mixed nuts | Toasted oak | Caramel | Very smooth & butter

Dry oak | Pepper | Lingering strawberry rhubarb aftertaste

Redwood Empire’s Pipe Dream Bourbon gets its name from the 14th tallest tree on the planet. Like its namesake, Redwood Empire has lofty goals with their first bourbon brand crafting a blend of bourbons from four different states with a wide range of ages. I’m not sure if Redwood Empire’s goal was to create a quintessential bourbon flavor profile, but they certainly nailed it if that was the case. Pipe Dream Bourbon is mainly a straightforward bourbon that nails the caramel/vanilla/oak trio with expert precision. Easy sipping and inoffensive in every way, Redwood Empire nails being an every-person bourbon. That decision ends up being a double edged sword, as it makes the bourbon a bit on the boring side, lacking much excitement besides its delightful strawberry rhubarb aftertaste. The bourbon will probably work best as a gift to a budding bourbon drinker that will be equally impressed by the out-of-the-mainstream selection and enchanting label design. For more experienced drinkers, despite its straightforwardness, it gets a few bonus points for its amazingly smooth and buttery consistency. For its price, it's hard to beat the value it offers

Rocket Top Straight Rye Whiskey , named after another gargantuan tree, also has a four-grain mash bill: 87 percent rye, 5 percent wheat, 5 percent malted barley and 3 percent corn. It too was distilled in 2017 and aged for a minimum of five years, after which 26 barrels were selected. Tasting notes for this expression note flavors of fig, peppercorn and caramel corn on the palate.

Redwood Empire Dives Deeper Into Grain Selection With Three New Whiskeys

Redwood Empire Dives Deeper Into Grain Selection With Three New Whiskeys

February 8, 2024 –––––– Danny Brandon , , , ,

Sonoma County, California whiskey maker Redwood Empire was founded in 2015 by Derek Benham, owner of wine and spirits company Purple Brands , and master distiller Jeff Duckhorn. From the start, the mission has been to create grain-to-glass whiskey that explores the terroir of the Golden State, and now Redwood Empire is diving deeper into grains with three new whiskeys.

2E9A2845_300.jpg

Foggy Burl and Devils Tower both saw a nationwide retail launch last week, but Screaming Titan won’t be released until next month. Redwood Empire, which currently produces only four barrels a day, teased that it has plans to start construction on a larger distillery later this year to expand production.

The key feature of all three whiskeys is their unusual mashbills. While using so many malt varieties isn’t unheard of— Westland also uses as many as seven in its single malt mashbills—it is fairly uncommon. The grain ratio on the four-grain bourbons is also decidedly unusual. According to master distiller Jeff Duckhorn, that’s by design. “Having a homebrewing background, I love to work with different grain types and coax out unique flavors,” says Duckhorn. “Starting this distillery from scratch in 2015, I was given a lot of creative freedom to explore different recipes as we learned the ins and outs of our unique equipment and environment.”

OVERALL RATING

Whiskey Review: Redwood Empire American Whiskey

  • by Aaron Knapp
  • December 31, 2017

Tasting Notes:

With high demand for unique kinds of alcoholic beverages these days, especially in the United States, success in one area tends to encourage forays into another.  Such appears to be the case for Sonoma County, California-based Graton Distilling Company and their Redwood Empire American Whiskey .

The distillery traces its origins back to a man named Derek Benham, who, fitting to the region, started out in wine sales before eventually founding Purple Wine + Spirits in 2001 in Graton, Calif.  Founded in 2015 as the spirits arm of Purple Wine + Spirits, Graton Distilling Company first launched the owner’s eponymous D. George Benham’s Sonoma Dry Gin in early 2016, then a like-named vodka, and most recently Redwood Empire American Whiskey in September .

While the company takes pride in its unique, custom-built micro-column still, the producers also aim to set Redwood Empire apart through blending. Starting with a mash bill of rye, corn and malted barley, they mix several 11-, 5-, and 4-year-old bourbons (40% of the final product) with 2- and 3-year-old ryes (the other 60%), which includes some rye distilled in house. Some of those distillates are aged in new, high-char, American oak casks while others are aged in either port or wine barrels – a confusing and proprietary procedure that the company doesn’t spell out fully.

The final product comes in at 90 proof and is sold in 750mL bottles for a suggested price of $45.

Redwood Empire American Whiskey

Tasting Notes: Redwood Empire American Whiskey

Vital stats: A blend of bourbon and ryes aged between two and 11 years in either new oak or wine barrels, 90% ABV and sold for about $45 a bottle.

Appearance: A deep, honey-like amber, perhaps a touch redder in hue than the average whiskey.

Nose: Initially hits the nasal passages with a sweet, tropical bouquet of sweet, Mexican vanilla, tangerine, and a bit of spicy sandalwood. As one continues smelling, that evolves into an earthier aroma of apple, caramel, and nutmeg.

Palate: The first sip falls onto the tongue with the flavor of delicate vanilla syrup with faint notes of apple and nutmeg. Those additional flavors build a bit over the next few seconds and begin to take on a spicy character of rye and nutmeg, but the sip generally stays on the sweeter side. The finish brings a gentle wave of rye that gradually works its way from the back of the mouth to the front, leaving a coat of earthy vanilla and a faint tingling that gently flares up on occasion in the back of the mouth.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
