Outer Hebrides

scotland outer hebrides tour

The Outer Hebrides lie to the west coast of the Scottish mainland and offer an insight into a more traditional lifestyle less common upon the Scottish mainland coupled with stunning beaches, coves and bays.  Visiting The Islands of Lewis and Harris and other parts of the Hebridean archipelago it is possible to visit the enchanting Luskentyre Bay, the mysterious Callanish Standing Stones and the awe inspiring Butt of Lewis.

This isolated island cluster offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life practiced throughout Scotland through the ages offering the opportunity to track the history of Scotland throughout thousands of years of human history.

The Outer Hebrides are reached via ferry service from Oban on the Scottish mainland or the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides providing scope for an Outer Hebridean tour to be combined with many aspects of the West Coast and Isle of Skye tour.

Tours to the Outer Islands would normally commence in the central belt of Scotland where our major airports are located and therefore tours would travel through other parts of Scotland en route to the Islands.  Please take a look at our other tour locations and mention if there are any places you may wish to be included into your itinerary.

Your journey

The stone walls and straw roof are stained with soot from the central fire. The children are sleeping amongst the cattle and sheep. And outside the door, you see a spectacle of sharp mountains and soft white sands.

This is what life was once like in the Outer Hebrides: wild, beautiful, and harmonious with the forces of nature.

On this tour, you journey to the edges of Scotland to experience the epic landscapes, wonderful traditions, and ancient relics of the Isle of Lewis and Harris.

You learn about the tweed weavers of Harris, you ponder over the purpose of gigantic Neolithic stone circles, and you step inside an ancient styled abode at the Arnol blackhouse.

What’s more is you also experience the classic Highland landscapes of the Cairngorms and experience the beauty of Scone Palace.

Join this tour, step inside the world of clans and crofters, and experience the wild and rugged legends of the Hebrides.

Accommodation

  • Take in views of the softly rounded peaks of the Grampian Mountains
  • See the amazing Corrieshalloch Gorge
  • Travel by ferry through the Summer Isles

You depart the cosmopolitan city of Edinburgh, journey past the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Forth Rail Bridge, and travel into the Highlands.

Your first stop of the day is in the village of Dunkeld. You get time here to stretch your legs and admire the cathedral’s unusual mixture of architectural styles.

You then venture through the shadows of the great and gorgeous Grampian Mountains and stop for lunch in the charming town of Aviemore.

After you’ve satisfied your taste buds, you drive out to Rogie Falls and take a short walk out to see this lovely sight.

Next up is Corrieshalloch Gorge, a lesser-known Scottish sight, but it’s one that you’ll love. It’s a short walk under forest canopies with a lovely view of a waterfall.

Then you’re off to Ullapool for a short visit before you jump on the ferry. This two and a half-hour boat trip takes you through the Summer Isles to Stornoway, the main town of the Western Isles, where you will be spending the night.

  • Explore the  rugged coastline of Lewis
  • Step inside an ancient Scottish home at Arnol Blackhouse*

After your breakfast, head off to the Butt of Lewis, the most northerly point of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Hold onto your beanies, as this headland spot is known as one of the windiest locations in the United Kingdom.

You’ll continue to explore the island as your driver-guide makes the most of what weather you’ve been blessed with, taking you through traditional crofting towns and seaside ports. Beach fans will love walking the beach at Port of Ness, and history buffs will adore Arnol Blackhouse*. Here, you can experience what traditional farming life was like in these remote reaches without getting your hands too dirty.

After lunch in Stornoway, you’ll explore the west side of Lewis out to Uig Bay, before returning to Stornoway for the night. Don’t forget this port town is home to Scotland’s most delicious black pudding – so why not give it a try?

  • Admire the landscapes that inspired Harris Tweed
  • Cast your eyes upon the slender, blonde curves of Luskentyre beach

It’s time for something a little more dramatic. It’s time to enter the region of Harris.

Harris boasts the highest mountains in the Outer Hebrides and one of the most beautiful white-sandy beaches in Britain, Luskentyre.

The area is also famous for Harris Tweed and myths that are as strange as they are poignant. Sate your appetite for shopping with a visit to the Clo Mor Harris Tweed Centre.

After a morning of exploring the dramatic landscapes, you stop for lunch. Depending on the weather, we may even go for a picnic on the beach – so don’t forget to pack your sunglasses.

You head back to Stornoway in the late afternoon.

  • Try not to get sent back in time when visiting the Calanais Standing Stones*
  • Spend the evening in Inverness, the ‘Capital of the Highlands’

First up today is a visit to the Calanais Stone Circle*, so prepare yourselves for the possibility of time travel. This prehistoric sight still mystifies archeologists today.

Continue your exploration with Dun Carloway Broch – these unique ruins sit atop a mound of rock on the Isle of Lewis.

Following lunch in Stornoway, you’ll jump back on the ferry to the mainland. We head straight for Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands and our final overnight stop.

*The Calanais stones will be closed from 26 October 2024. This will affect tours departing between 25-29 Oct 2024. We apologise for any inconvenience.

  • Try your luck at spotting Nessie
  • Visit Scone Palace, the ancient crowning place of the Kings of Scots

This morning we leave Inverness and head along the shores of Loch Ness. Get your cameras ready just in case Nessie decides to make an appearance. Next you head for Tominoul, the highest village in the Highlands. Sitting on the north side of the Cairngorm National Park, with its central square and 18th-century buildings, Tomintoul is a fine example of a planned village.

Next we head into Royal Deeside, the great valley of the River Dee that runs all the way from the sweeping mountains to the Aberdeenshire coast.

Next it’s time to relax over a leisurely lunch in the charming village of Braemar in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. This beautiful and remote village feels like the Highlands of a bygone era. Set amongst majestic mountains, peat coloured rivers and cool dark forests, it’s easy to see why the British Royal Family have made this area their favourite summer retreat.

From here the route south passes over Scotland’s highest mountain pass, through Highland Perthshire before stopping at Scone Palace, the home of Scotland’s legendary Coronation Stone, better known as the Stone of Destiny.

From here it’s a short journey back to Edinburgh.

Itinerary subject to change.

We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

Outer Hebrides

scotland outer hebrides tour

An island-by-island guide to Scotland's Outer Hebrides

The outer hebrides archipelago is nothing short of otherworldly – all stone circles, deserted beaches and epic wildlife. there are over 200 islands and islets to explore, but we’ve chosen six world-class spots for you to savour., why explore the outer hebrides.

The Outer Hebrides, a 130-mile (209km) island chain also known as the Western Isles, is seriously out there. Physically out there, that is, set across the treacherous Minch strait, west of the Isle of Skye (the next landfall is the Americas), but also spiritually, linguistically, culturally and scenically in a world of their own.

Calanais, Lewis (Image: Helen Hotson/Shutterstock)

We’re talking stone circles, a hundred sweeping white sand beaches that rival the Caribbean and hulking mountains where you won’t meet a soul, but you’ll grow closer to yours. Then there’s a culture and heritage alive with everything from torrid tales from the Clearances years through to the global fashion icon of Harris Tweed. And, yes, whisky too – best enjoyed with an impromptu folk music session in the life-affirming local pubs.

Lewis may be joined at the hip with Harris – and together they form the third-largest island in the British Isles after Britain and Ireland – but they are very much two separate places.

Lewis overflows with culture and history, from the recently revamped Lews Castle in the lively capital of Stornoway (home to riotous Scottish folk rock sensation Peat and Diesel), through to one of the best-preserved old crofting villages in Scotland, the thatched roof wonder of Gearrannan Blackhouse Village.

Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, Lewis (Image: M. Vinuesa/Shutterstock)

Nearby vaults one of the nation’s finest brochs (a fortified tower unique to Scotland), Dun Carloway, standing firm against the baleful Atlantic. And so too does the star of the show: Calanais. This remarkable 5,000-year-old stone circle overlooking the ocean was the inspiration for the stone circle in Disney's Brave . This being the Outer Hebrides, there are little-visited prehistoric sites sprinkled in the countryside around too.

Where to stay

It has to be  Gearrannan Blackhouse Village . Peel back the centuries and connect with Lewis’s historic heart by staying in one of the old blackhouses.

Where to eat

You won’t forget the views across the famous beach out of the giant windows at the Uig Sands Restaurant – nor the boat-fresh seafood at the special spot where the legendary Lewis Chessmen were uncovered.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Uig Sands Restaurant (@uigsands)

If it’s beaches you crave, then Harris is for you. The water never quite warms up properly, but there’s nothing like standing on your own beach with mountains at one end, seals at the other. Scarista, Luskentyre or Seilebost are the most famous in this epic landscape forged by some of the oldest rocks in the world (Lewis gneiss), but you’ll have fun finding your own.

Luskentyre Beach, Harris (Image: Helen Hotson/Shutterstock)

The village of Tarbert makes a good base as it’s home to a  superb shop where you can learn more about Harris Tweed. They sell the genuine article – hand-crafted from wool that’s dyed, spun and then hand-woven on looms in the Outer Hebrides. Look out for the famous orb trademark label. Next door is the modern, purpose-built Isle of Harris Distillery , well known for its gin. Though the first (legal) distillery on Harris will soon be more famous for its whisky as its single malts mature.

Don’t miss a drive on the ‘Golden Road’, either. Sinewy and surreal, the tarmac single track feels more rollercoaster than road and the local sheep ensure your journey takes three times longer than Google reckons.

The  Sound of Harris is a brace of beautiful 1950s retro-chic lodges with Japanese baths. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the views of the eponymous sound.

Sound of Harris, Harris (Sound of Harris/Facebook)

Where to eat

You can ‘only’ enjoy a homemade scone or triple chocolate brownie with your coffee here, but  Skoon is also an art gallery where you can pick up traditional music, as well as an original painting.

READ MORE: Here are more reasons why you should visit the Isle of Harris

North Uist thrills wildlife enthusiasts and is a scenic stunner too, if you swoon at big skies, Atlantic views and beaches. A necklace of white sand graces its entire west coast, with rugged lochs, lochans and sodden moors breaking east.

Few bird reserves boast as impressive an array of birds as the RSPB’s  Balranald . The corncrake is its most famous resident, nevermind the colourful machair flowers, white-sand beaches and the passing basking sharks.

The imprint of man is intriguing too. Trinity Temple is an eye-catching 13th-century church and monastery ruin alive with history. Founded by Beathag, daughter of the Norse-Scot warrior Somerled, it has changed over the centuries, but its moody appeal is undimmed.

It’s also easy to ‘island hop’ as causeways link north to Berneray – with a beach so spectacular the Thai tourist office apparently nicked it for an advert – and Benbecula to the south, with its own stunning strands.

Fans out of Outlander won’t be able to contain their excitement while staying in  Struan Cottage , a traditional whitewashed thatched croft by the beach.

Struan Cottage, North Uist (Image: Richard Newton/Alamy)

Grab the local gossip and take the cultural pulse of North Uist at Taigh Chearsabhagh , in the ‘capital’ of Lochmaddy. It’s a café and cultural centre where you can learn more about Gaelic and Hebridean culture.

The rich sprinkling of white-sand beaches that line the entire west coast are reason enough to visit, but the largest of the southern Outer Hebrides will always be associated with one of Scotland’s most famous historical figures, Flora Macdonald.

After growing up here, she helped Jacobite pretender Bonnie Prince Charlie – at the time Europe’s most wanted man – to evade the British Army Redcoats in the aftermath of The Battle of Culloden in 1746. Check out the simple memorial by the ruin of her blackhouse.

Eriskey ponies, South Uist (Image: Erni/Shutterstock)

South Uist’s population of Eriskay ponies don’t care much for history, not when they have wild Loch Druidibeg to roam around. Spread across more than 4,000 acres, this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) creates an island habitat with its machair stretching on to moorland punctuated with wee lochans. The RSPB reserve here is alive too with everything from corncrakes and graylag geese to golden eagles and peregrine falcons.

The  Polochar Inn is a whitewashed dame right on the Atlantic with mind-blowing sunsets. It’s great for stargazing and possibly spotting the Northern Lights too.

Love seafood? Head for the  Orasay Inn and tuck into boat-fresh scallops, crab and lobster.

If you’re short of time and can only visit one island, then this is the one: this multifaceted wee charmer is the Outer Hebrides in miniature.

The journey is a joy – especially if you fly in from Glasgow and experience the world’s only scheduled flight that lands on a gorgeous white sand beach. Don’t miss garlic cockles culled from the runway.

The only real village is Castlebay. It tempts with Kisimul Castle, the ancient seat of the Macneils of Barra, whose hulk lies in the bay, just a boat ride away. You can kayak too: Clearwater Paddling shows you that Barra is a world-class sea kayaking destination as you ease along with the seals, otters, eagles, dolphins and even whales.

The beaches are life-affirming, backed inland by the wildflower-kissed machair and spreading out towards rugged hills and glowering peaks. The view from Sheabhal back towards Skye and the mainland, and closer to the wee isles of Mingulay and Vatersay, is sublime.

Boat trips from Castlebay leave for uninhabited Mingulay, with its mysterious beachfront abandoned village too.

It’s worth staying at the  Castlebay Hotel just in case the legendary Vatersay Boys are in the bar for an impromptu music session. Book a sea-view room.

The Barra hand-dived king scallop pakora at  Café Kisimul – a top-notch Indian spot with a focus on local ingredients – are out of this world.

Even the mention of mystical St Kilda is enough to get many a Scot misty-eyed. UNESCO are fans too – they awarded it a dual listing on their coveted World Heritage List, for both its natural charms and for human heritage. It lies a whopping 40 miles (64km) west of the main thrust of the Outer Hebrides.

St Kilda, Outer Hebrides (Image: Martin Payne/Shutterstock)

St Kilda is not actually one island, but the only one you’re likely to get to is the main island of Hirta. It was once home to a community that lived life on Main Street in Village Bay with few of the creature comforts we deem essential today and few of the social structures and graces of the mainland. The last residents were only evacuated in 1930, leaving it largely to the one-million-plus birds who call it home in summer.

Many a sailor fails to get here – any sort of easterly and forget the only real anchorage in Village Bay – but the  fast boats from Skye have a good landing record. You can also join a live-aboard cruise that ventures this far out –  Hebrides Cruises is a great option.

Volunteering to do conservation work with the  NTS means you get to live in this amazing world.

There is a small shop with limited hours. The good news is all picnic spots come with a serious view.

Holiday Details

Day one – meet and greet in glasgow.

Meet your tour leader and fellow travellers for a welcome dinner. With an early morning flight, this is a great location to start the trip. Discuss the week ahead and enjoy a meal in the company of kindred spirits.

Your accommodation at Glasgow Airport

A comfortable airport hotel in an excellent location. The main terminal is only a short walk away so there’s no need to worry about morning transfers. A pleasant bar and restaurant on-site makes for a relaxed evening. For those wishing to explore, Glasgow city is only a twenty-minute bus or taxi ride away.

Day Two – Come Away To Stornoway

Its a bright and early start this morning, with the short flight across to Stornoway, the capital of Lewis and Harris. After landing its then northwards up the island to take in sights such as the stunning coastal landscape round the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse as well as Port of ness Harbour. On then to the Ness Historical Society, based in the former primary school it hosts a fascinating archive covering all aspects of island culture, life and history – from crofting and wool working, to locally renowned poets and artists, as well as the role the islands played in the two world wars. There’s also a cafe for those in need of refreshments. Back then down to Stornoway, where you’re free to take advantage of the suggestions from your guide as to the best places to have lunch.

The afternoon takes us to nearby Sandwick to visit the Iolaire Viewpoint, part of the Point and Sandwick Trail of magnificent, rugged views and a thriving environment for local wildlife, including sea otters, seals and wild birds. It features a memorial and a row of 201 trees to commemorate the sailors lost in the tragedy of 1919, when HMY Iolaire sank at the entrance to Stornoway Harbour. A little further on, just outside of the town in Marybank, is the impressive Isle of Lewis Memorial. Completed in 1924, this beautiful stone tower marks the brave servicemen of the islands lost in world war one and the regiments they proudly represented.

Your accommodation in Harris

Located in the village of Tarbert, this family-run boutique style hotel is an ideal base to explore Harris and Lewis. Comfortable modern rooms combined with an informal, but well regarded restaurant serving delicious meals, made with the freshest local ingredients, make this a very welcoming stay. Little luxurious touches help to create a real home from home feeling.

Day Three – As Harris The Eye Can See

Start the day with an excursion to Luskentyre beach. This sprawling dream of sand and sea envelopes the rocky outcrops, little islands of stone and grass splinter out among the water. Spend the morning walking by the peaceful ocean. From there you’ll be heading Southwards

Next it’s on to a special experience. Dotted all over Scotland are wee wooly beasts called sheep. Many years ago it was noted sheep don’t look half as miserable as humans when it rains. Thus, it was deduced that their jackets were better than ours.  For centuries since, local weavers have been turning Scottish wool into Harris Tweed. Hard wearing and fashionable, it is the only textile with its own acct of parliament. Every yard is inspected, every label is hand stamped, every weaver must pass a rigorous test. Visit a local weavers shed and see the mighty loom in action. Over the whirring of the shuttle and the clacking of the beater, hear tales of this fabled material.

Only a few minutes away is the next stop where you can learn about the genealogical history of the islands and discover any family ties. Seallam! are the historical archives created by a man on a mission to protect the local folk history.

Finish the day with glass in hand at Harris Distillery, discovering the philosophy behind this entrepreneurial business. Opened in 2015, the distiller’s trademark bottle is already iconic – the kelp infused liquid embracing the terroir of Harris. The wait is finally over to sample the whisky that has been maturing since the opening of the distillery. The Hearach, which is named after the inhabitants of the island, is its first single malt. Every drop has been distilled by local people and after many considered conversations, a spirit of character and complexity has been created. Enjoy.

Day Four – Pillars Of Lewis

In the company of a local guide, travel to the island of Lewis (which is attached the island of Harris, and both are in fact one island – ask your guide to help untangle this).

A visit to Lewis wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Callanish standing stones. Older than the pyramids and pre-dating Stonehenge, these huge slabs of stone have stood over the landscape for 5,000 years. Almost lost among the peat until rediscovered by a curious farmer, delve into the mists of pre-history and glimpse the lives of our ancient ancestors.

Next, we travel to Dun Carloway Broch, a structure only found in Scotland and dating back to 200 BC. It was said to have been used as a stronghold by members of the Morrison Clan in the 1500’s. At nine metres tall, it is still impressively standing close to its original height.

Step back in time with a visit at Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. Experience the way of life in a typical crofting township from last century, working your way through the houses and hearing stories about the people who lived here.

Onwards to Stornoway to explore the museum within Lews Castle. Hear the fascinating story of the Lewis Chessmen and their discovery in a sand dune. These most reluctant looking of chess pieces are an important part of cultural trading history.

Day Five – Prince’s Island Trail

You’ll take the short ferry journey from Harris to Berneray and stop at Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts centre. Built in 1741 by a merchant, the building is steeped in history and now champions preserving the islands heritage, visual arts and the Gaelic language . Stretch your legs with a walk to Barpa Langass burial cairn, taking in the staggering sea views. Visit the remains of Trinity Temple, a medieval monastery and college which was destroyed during the Reformation and restored in the 19th century. Travel onto Benbecula via linked causeways sixty years in the making; this island is full of surprises – especially for the tourist board that mistook its golden beaches for a luxury Thai resort.

Stop at Loch a ‘Chinn Uacraich for fresh air and wildlife spotting. With a bit of luck you might see an otter or two. These lithe creatures are famously shy, so keep your eyes peeled for a ring of bright water. This area is notorious for a strange nineteenth-century tale; kelp pickers reported seeing a miniature woman “the size of a well-fed four-year-old” among the seaweed. Soon after her body was washed ashore – “half-woman half-fish”. Buried in an unmarked grave, the mystery was never solved.

Bonnie Prince Charlie’s final Scottish journey disembarked from Benbecula as recounted in The Skye Boat Song. End the day following the Prince’s trail to South Uist and hear fascinating stories of an outlaw on the run. Stop at a museum for the ages and visit the stone lady who drove out an army.

Your accommodation in South Uist

Set upon the edge of South Uist, this simple inn offers a warm welcome. The stunning scenery and vast skies make this feel like the ends of the earth. The cosy bar and restaurant are popular with travellers and locals alike – spend the evening by the fire or take a midnight stroll by the sea. This will be the groups base for the next two nights – the perfect location from which to explore Barra and North Uist.

Day Six – To Barra And Back

After a short transfer to Eriskay island (watch out for the indigenous ponies) take the ferry to Barra. The single-track road turns and twists by the white beach and turquoise waters, over heather and rock hill – it will soon become apparent why locals call it ‘Barra-dise’. A fifteenth-century gift from the Lord of the Isles to clan McNeil, it became the base of Roderick the Turbulent for his raids on Queen Elizabeth’s Navy. Brought before King James VI (and soon to be I of England) to answer for his crimes, Roderick reminded the King that Elizabeth had chopped off Bloody Mary’s head (James’ mother). Roderick was promptly released without charge.

Head over to Traigh Mhòr beach and listen closely. If the timing is right, there’s a sight to be seen on this vast wash of sand. The DHC-6 Twin Otter engines hum and dip as the aircraft descends. Watching the plane land on the beach is a unique experience. Pass over the causeway to Vatersay, an area of outstanding natural beauty and endless machair, then catch the evening ferry back to South Uist.

Day Seven – Fond Farewells

After a relaxed breakfast, you transfer back to Benbecula for the flight to Glasgow, landing in the early afternoon. Say goodbye to the rest of your fellow travellers, before continuing on with your journey.

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - Edinburgh - Loch Ness - Inverness

From the nation’s capital, we head north, leaving its bustling streets behind as we adventure through rolling fields and glens.

Our first stop is to see the magnificent Kelpies. These massive equine statutes were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and celebrate the role heavy horses played in the industrial development of Central Scotland.

We are surrounded by history as our journey continues through William Wallace country which takes us past the imposing heights of Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument . Remember to keep a lookout for the ramparts of Doune Castle, the star of both Outlander and Game of Thrones .

More atmospheric scenery awaits as we thread our way through the dramatic peaks and valleys of Glen Coe – also known as the ‘ Glen of Weeping ‘ – and the snow-capped peak of the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

As we near the banks of Loch Ness, learn more about the legendary creature said to inhabit its icy depths. A short stop on its shores gives you the chance to look out for Nessie herself before we continue on to Inverness. We arrive in plenty of time for a leisurely stroll beside the river or castle, before a relaxing dinner among the city’s many bars and restaurants.

Overnight: Inverness

Day 2 - Inverness - Ullapool - Stornoway

After a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to Inverness and turn northwards. Our first stop is the tumbling waters of Black Water Falls at Garve, where we pause awhile to drink in the clean mountain air and stunning scenery.

Thoroughly invigorated, we leisurely wind our way north on one of Scotland’s most picturesque roads, passing majestic mountains and peaceful glens along the way.

The next stop is the pretty fishing port of Ullapool on Loch Broom, which serves as our stepping stone to the Isle of Lewis. From here, we hop aboard the ferry for the crossing to Stornoway . Keep an eye out for the friendly leaping dolphins who often accompany travellers on their way!

On arrival in the Outer Hebrides , there’s plenty of time to explore these beautiful islands' remote and rugged charms. We start our island adventure by meandering south towards the idyllic splendour and welcoming tranquillity of the Isle of Harris .

Famous worldwide for its glittering turquoise seas and gleaming white sands, we pause awhile to marvel at this wonder of nature, framed by its imposing mountain backdrop.

Our day ends gazing across the water amid the welcoming lights of Stornoway, where a choice of freshly-caught specials awaits in its cosy eateries.

Overnight: Stornoway (2 nights)

Day 3 - Exploring the Isle of Lewis

With an exciting day of discovery ahead of us, another delicious Highland breakfast is essential before we set out to explore the many delights of Lewis.

First, we journey back 5,000 years to the Neolithic age as we explore the dramatic beauty of the old Calanais Standing Stones , their weathered faces standing impassively in the shadow of the Great Bernera hills. Please note that from 01 September 2024, there will be no access due to conservation work.

From here, we jump forward thousands of years as we wander the Iron Age settlement at Dun Carloway Broch . Close your eyes and imagine the hustle and bustle of the thriving community that prospered here for centuries.

Our next port of call is a little more up to date as we head to the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, where we receive a fascinating first-hand demonstration of 17th-century life on this remote island.

No visit is complete without a trip to its most northerly point, the Butt of Lewis , where the swirling foam crashes against the cliffs beneath a majestic lighthouse.

Today’s travels complete, we head back to Stornoway, where there is still time to wander the pretty harbour and choose which delicious seafood to sample tonight.

Day 4 - Stornoway - Isle of Harris - Portree

We start our day by visiting the popular Harris Distillery in the village of Tarbert, where we relax with a wee dram of their finest uisge beatha .

The dramatic coastline’s many bays and inlets can be seen as we board the ferry for our next island destination, gulls wheeling noisily above us as we head over the sea to Skye.

Renowned for its abundant wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, the afternoon is spent on the island’s northern point, exploring the Trotternish peninsula. Here, we soak up the stunning scenery and admire the awe-inspiring rock formations, including the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr.

Folklore is also on our agenda as we learn about the island’s fascinating myths and legends and its famous history, including Flora MacDonald helping the fugitive Bonnie Prince Charlie flee to the isle disguised as her maid in 1746.

Suitably enlightened, we retire to the scenic town of Portree, where fresh ingredients and delicious local specialities await in its many welcoming restaurants.

Overnight: Portree (2 nights)

Day 5 - Exploring the Isle of Skye and Eilean Donan Castle

As the sun stretches its fingers across the waters of our peaceful harbour home, we breakfast in anticipation, knowing another day of exploration awaits.

The first stop is the Waternish peninsula and the charming Fairy Bridge . Sitting beside the main road, this pretty stone structure is said to mark the spot where a clan chief’s fairy wife bid him farewell before returning to her own people.

Equally enchanting are the sparkling waters of the Sligachan River, which tumble beneath breathtaking views of the Cuillin mountains. Said to grant eternal beauty, we will pause for a while to appreciate the scene and hear their fascinating mythology.

Another fairytale sight greets us as we cross the Skye Bridge to arrive at one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks – Eilean Donan Castle . Standing proudly at the meeting point of three sea lochs, this 13th-century island fortress is world famous thanks to appearances in films including Highlander and The World is Not Enough. There’s plenty of time to put yourself in the picture too, as we explore its delights and pose for photographs amid stunning scenery.

We then return to Portree for your final chance to browse its colourful shops and restaurants and sample the real taste of Scotland.

Day 6 - Portree - Jacobite Steam Train - Edinburgh

Our final day dawns with a slight sadness at leaving this magical isle – but also excitement at the epic experiences that still await us.

After enjoying breakfast in our charming village, we set out for a drive through the lush Sleat Peninsula, known as the garden of Skye. Our destination is the ferry port of Armadale.

From here it’s a hop, skip and jump back to the mainland as we board our ferry once again, this time arriving at the bustling fishing village of Mallaig.

After a brief pause to catch our breath, we swap our sea legs for steam power as it’s all aboard the Jacobite Steam Train for one of the world’s most spellbinding railway journeys.

With spectacular views all around us, we follow in the tracks of Harry Potter as we cross the 21 giant arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct, our faithful engine whistling merrily as we speed 100ft above the lush forests and rivers below.

After alighting, we take the scenic route south, admiring the beauty of the Cairngorms National Park before arriving home in Edinburgh.

Having somewhere pleasant to stay after an exciting day of discovery is an important part of your holiday experience. Comfortable guest house accommodation with en-suite bathrooms, tv and other amenities is included in the price of all tours.

A tasty Scottish breakfast is included each morning of your stay.

What options are available on this tour and what is the cost?

To give you maximum flexibility the cost of admission fees and other optional extras are not included in the tour price. This gives you complete freedom to choose as the mood takes you. On this tour the optional visits are:

Abhainn Dearg Distillery Eilean Donan Castle Armadale Castle

Following the links above will give you more information on each attraction including current admission prices. At some locations a special discount is offered to tour participants, your driver/guide will give you more information if this applies. Credit/debit cards are not always accepted so you should plan to have sufficient cash with you should you wish to make any visits.

What is the journey on the Jacobite Steam Train like?

Described as one of the great railway journeys of the world this memorable trip will take you past a list of impressive extremes.

Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train will cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the Harry Potter films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause on the viaduct, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view.

Standard class tickets are included in the cost of the tour. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to upgrade these tickets to First Class.

Will there be time to visit Eilean Donan Castle?

We allow a stop of approximately 1 hour to visit Eilean Donan Castle.

Please note that this information is for guidance only and the location and duration of any stop may be varied or cancelled for operational reasons.

Should I make dinner reservations for an evening meal in Portree?

Yes! Portree is the capital and main town on the Isle of Skye, and therefore is a very popular destination, especially in the summer months. There are many excellent restaurants in Portree , and they tend to get pretty busy, so we strongly recommend making reservations for your evening meal to avoid disappointment.

We advise not making your dinner reservations for any earlier than 7pm to allow plenty of time for the coach to return to Portree, after a full day of exploring the wonders of the Magical Isle.

You can also check out our Portree blog for more tips and information.

Scotland - Outer Hebrides Bike Tour

Outer Hebrides landscape

Trip Overview

Earn your certificate for completing Scotland’s famous Hebridean Way when you cycle the length of the Outer Hebrides. You experience gorgeous mountains and moorland, white sandy beaches, and wild Atlantic weather. The Outer Hebrides are unlike anywhere else in the U.K. Cycle from the southernmost accessible tip of the Outer Hebrides islands on Bhatarsaigh (Vatersay) … to the northernmost tip on the Butt of Lewis. You cross over 10 islands, 6 causeways, and 4 ferries heading north through these remote and spectacular islands. And you get an insider look at Scottish history that highlights the Gaelic and Norse cultures. The word “Hebrides” comes from the Norse Viking words for “islands at the edge of the sea.” Discover a culture very different from the Scottish mainland. Every night on the islands, you are a guest at a small and historic town. This includes the Muthu Alexandra Hotel, which lies in a crescent occupying the hills surrounding Oban Bay, known as the “Seafood Capital of Scotland.” The Craigard Hotel is on the Isle of Barra, the southern gateway to the Isles, where you see outstanding views and the historic Kisimul Castle. Lastly, stay at the Crown Inn – where you can discover the sunset at the Callanish Stones, which have been standing for 5,000 years and pre-date Stonehenge. Let’s cycle through history together! A Grand Hebridean Islands tour from Inverness through the Highlands to the Outer Hebrides, the Isle of Skye, Mull and Iona over seven days.

Day 1  – An early start from Inverness to the coastal village of Ullapool where we board the ferry for a 2¾ hour journey across the Minch to the Isle of Lewis (my native island) and its main town of Stornoway. From there we spend the afternoon exploring the magnificent Neolithic Calanais Standing Stones, the 2000 year old Dun Carloway Broch and a traditional Hebridean blackhouse. We finish the day at the beautiful beach at Dalbeg before our return to Stornoway for our overnight stay.

We visit Rodel to explore the medieval St Clement’s church, home to one of Scotland's most remarkable 16th century tombs. The late afternoon takes us back to Tarbert before we return north to Stornoway for our overnight stay.

Houses We Love: Every day we feature a remarkable space submitted by our community of architects, designers, builders, and homeowners. Have one to share? Post it here.

Project Details:

Location: Isle of Harris, United Kingdom

Architect: Izat Arundell / @ izat.arundell

Footprint: 915 square feet

Structural Engineer: Narro Associates

Cabinetry Design: Alasdair Izat

Stone Masonry: Macaulay Stonemasons

Photography: Richard Gaston / @ richardgaston

From the Architect: " Izat Arundell have completed their first new build house on the Isle of Harris. This is the private home of Eilidh Izat and Jack Arundell who run the award-winning architecture practice Izat Arundell together with their Edinburgh-based holiday let Porteous Studio and Scottish cider company Linn.

"Perched on a rocky outcrop and just a stone’s throw away from the Minch— the Atlantic sea channel between the Outer Hebrides and mainland Scotland—the house has been strategically positioned to take advantage of the elevated level and panoramic sea views across to Skye.

"The sculptural form is built out of the same Lewisian Gneiss rock on which it sits and sourced from a quarry less than five miles away. A concrete parapet with exposed Lewisian Gneiss aggregate caps the stone walls and together with the hardwood windows create a contemporary feeling around the project.

"Internally, soft angles weave throughout the home creating intriguing spaces that flow into one another while still remaining defined. These ideas were inspired by the gently shaped black houses which are vernacular to the island.

"The house was entirely built by Jack Arundell and Alasdair Izat—Eilidh’s brother and furniture maker—and Dan Macaulay, their friend and stonemason. They broke ground in January 2022 and it took 18 months to complete, including battling through nine named storms."

Pre and post conference tours, ranging from one to 10 days in length, have been developed which will welcome delegates on to farms and crofts in every part of Scotland from Orkney to Dumfries and Galloway. 100 free scholarship places will be made available for visitors from developing countries to attend the conference with Scottish farmers opening their homes to host scholars post conference.

The winning bid

Commenting on the reasons Scotland was chosen to be the host destination for 2026, Lisa Chase, Chair of the Global Agritourism Network said:

"Scotland demonstrated many features to deliver an extremely strong bid including a key focus on showcasing food and drink from agritourism farms, both on farm and throughout conference menus.

The review team felt delegates would be interested in learning about the diversity of quality agritourism businesses on offer, Scotland's connected agritourism network, the 2030 national strategy and growth ambition and monitor farms programme.

The offer of agritourism businesses to showcase Scottish hospitality and to open their doors throughout all of Scotland during the pre and post tour as well as the offer to support one hundred scholars made the bid very compelling."

This exciting news marks an important milestone in Scotland’s growing reputation as an agritourism destination. We’ve been working closely with businesses to help develop and market those unique and authentic experiences we know visitors are seeking and that many of our country’s farms and crofts are perfectly placed to offer. This conference will now help showcase that work to delegates across the world, creating opportunities to share learnings while allowing attendees to enjoy Scotland’s famous hospitality, delicious farm produce and unmissable agritourism offering. DIY Design and Build: Izat Arundell’s Stone House in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides (For Rent This Summer Only)

E ilidh Izat and Jack Arundell met at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival in July 2014. She was an ambitious young architect newly back home in Scotland after training at firms in Tokyo and Oslo. He was an out-of-work recent college grad from Yorkshire with a degree in civil engineering. When Eilidh mentioned she was about to install a new kitchen in her apartment, Jack surprised her by volunteering to help.

In 2017, the couple completed their first professional project, Porteous Studio , a snug former blacksmith’s workshop that they turned into an exquisitely composed Zen vacation rental. Next, they founded their own architecture firm, Izat Arundell. Eilidh (whose Scottish Gaelic name is pronounced AY-lee) is in charge of design, and Jack, who picked up contracting and construction skills along the way, makes the wheels turn.

Now, 10 years in, they’ve built a magical new home base for themselves far from Edinburgh on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Eilidh’s initial plans for two two-story concrete volumes got entirely scrapped when material costs sent her rethinking everything. She studied the land and used layers of cardboard to envision their modernist, eco-conscious stone cottage: a single-story, one-bedroom house angled to hug the view of their sheltered inlet.

Jack and Eilidh’s brother, Alasdair Izat , a furniture maker, spent 18 months building the structure entirely themselves (with help on the exterior from their stonemason friend Dan Macauley). At times, they all, Eilidh included, camped on the land in tents and trailers. Newly complete, the house is rentable this summer for week-long stays as a way to help defray construction costs. Join us for a tour.

“The house is connected to the grid but we have a 3.6kW solar panel system that feeds into our hot water tank,” explains Eilidh. “We’d ideally like this to feed into a battery but we need to save up for that. We’re also planning to install a micro-hydro turbine behind the house that will help offset costs in winter.”

Eilidh and Jack like to use natural sheep’s wool insulation in their projects but in this case went with mineral fiber “to keep our wall thickness down and achieve good acoustic ratings,” says Eilidh. “The wind and rain here can be very noisy and the mineral wool helps helps keep the house quiet.”
