Shenzhen Shopper

Your essential guide to visiting and living in Shenzhen, China

Shenzhen Visa

Shenzhen is located in mainland China and if you plan to visit the city, whether from Hong Kong, Macau, or flying into Shenzhen Airport, you are going to need a valid China Visa.

Before diving into the different visa’s that are available there are some things that everyone must have regardless

  • valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages
  • passport photo – recently-taken color passport color photo (bare-head, full face) against a light background of the size of 48mm×33mm

One blank page will be taken up by the visa itself and another blank page is required for entry and exit stamps. Whilst 2 blank pages may be enough I suggest having several. Every time you exit and enter the customs officers seem to care little about the economical use of space and stamp wherever.

Whilst there are numerous types of visa categories for entry into China, and I’ll list all of those at the bottom of the page, the most common is the L visa or tourist visa, the M business visa, along with the G transit visa.

Getting an L visa (tourist visa) or M visa (business visa)

You should do this prior to leaving your own country via your nearest Chinese Embassy or the Chinese Consulate General, or the China Visa Application Centre. It’s generally cheaper, straightforward, and the most legitimate accepted method.

An L tourist visa is usually valid for 30 days and in rare cases up to 90 days. Most commonly they are 30 day single entry meaning you can enter China once and when you leave the visa expires regardless of any days remaining. You may be able to apply for a 60-day double entry visa.

The business visa or M visa can be 30 days, 60 days and even 6 month with single or multiple entry.

For business visa you will need documents on the commercial activity issued by a trade partner in China, or trade fair invitation or other invitation letters issued by a relevant entity or individual. The invitation letter should contain: a) Information on the applicant: (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.) b) Information on the planned visit: (the purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures) c) Information on the inviting entity or individual: (name, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, the signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual (the business license of the inviting entity should be provided when required).

Extending an L or M visa

Generally speaking its stated that the L visa cannot be extended, although, there are circumstances whereby visiting the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau in Luohu you may be able to have the visa extended one time. M visa can be extended more easily.

Getting a China Visa in Hong Kong

L Tourist Visa or M Business Visa (30 day, 60 day, 6-12 month single and multiple)

You can visit one of the numerous travel agents in Hong Kong who will assist you and forward your application and visa to the Chinese government. You can apply for most any visa type through this method but again, it’s still advised to get your visa in your own country. Of course, the agent will also take a fee on top of the visa fee. In most cases, processing takes four days although you can pay extra for a rush service. In most cases with these visas, you will be required to cross the Shenzhen border at Luohu.

Alternatively, you can visit the government office:

Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) 20/F, Capital Center, 151 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong http://bio.visaforchina.org/HKG2_EN/

Fees vary between agencies so do check around. As an example from CVASC

  • Single entry 550 HKD
  • Double entry 60 day 710 HKD
  • 6 Month M visa multiple entry 860 HKD

Group Tourist Visa

If you are in Hong Kong you can join a travel group with a registered company and visit China without the need for a visa. You must enter with the group tour and leave with the group tour. You are allowed a maximum of 6 days and can only visit these cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Shantou. Tourist agencies in Hong Kong can provide specifics and pricing.

Shenzhen Visa on Arrival

At the Shenzhen Luohu Border, visitors can head to the visa office and apply for a Shenzhen 5-day VOA (Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Tourism Visa). With the 5-day Shenzhen visa, you permitted to travel throughout Shenzhen but not beyond.

Visa Cost: 168 yuan (citizens of some countries may need to more) Processing Time: 15 minutes (depending on how busy) Required documents: Visa with 6 months validity and at least two blank pages

Shenzhen 24 hr /72hr Transit Visa and 144-hour TWOV

Shenzhen does not yet offer the 72-hour or 144-hour transit without visa that other Chinese cities offer. This service is expected to be available soon.

It is expected that the 144 hours visa-free transit will apply Guangdong wide, meaning you will have free transit throughout the whole Guangdong province including Shenzhen. It will be available to citizens of 53 countries who meet certain criteria including

  • Inform the airline when booking the ticket
  • Passport/Travel Document valid for at least 3 months from the date of entry
  •  Confirmed onward ticket to a third country/region
  •  Visa for a third country/region (if one is rqd.)
  • Must enter via Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, Shenzhen Bao’an Airport, or Jieyang Chaoshan Airport.

5 Days in Shenzhen! How To Get a China Visa on Arrival

Michael Michelini Last Updated: July 17, 2020 Blog , Lifestyle , Travel 10 Comments

shenzhen special economic zone tourist visa

Just like in any other international airport, going to China requires every passport holder to get a Visa. To many, getting a Visa is quite difficult and time consuming – most especially to international business traveller whose time is money. However, if you plan to go to China and stay for not more than 5 days, acquiring a visa is easy and can actually be acquired upon arrival at Shenzhen. Whether you’re travelling to China for business or for pleasure, this 5-day Visa upon arrival is great.

Below are some frequently asked questions regarding this 5 day VOA Visa.

How to get 5 day VOA Visa:

First off, to acquire this type of Visa, you must travel by land from Hongkong. Hopping across to Shenzhen China from Hongkong make this 5 day visa on arrival possible and less complicated.

What you’ll need: Passport, immigration form, and money to pay the visa.

Which passport holders can it apply to?

shenzhen special economic zone tourist visa

Most European and developed countries are eligible for the five-day VOA, including Australia, Canada, Germany, Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. ( source )

Where can I get a Visa on arrival?

The single entry five-day VOA is always available at Luohu (Lo Wu) Port. It is available intermittently at Huanggang Port, Shekou Port and Fuyong Port. There is no office at Futian Port although it is only a few hundred meters from Huanggang Port. ( source )

How to get to Luohu Port from Hongkong:

Luohu Port: The easiest and simplest way to get to Luohu Port is by taking the MTR East Rail Line going to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau Station. Upon arrival, just follow the signs that say “ Foreigners ” and look for a sign that says “Port Visa”, you should be able to apply for your visa there. Travel time should be under an hour. You can apply for VOA from 6:30 am to mid night.

If you’re coming directly from HK Airport: ( source )

  • from Hong Kong Airport take the Airport Express to Tsing Yi Station
  • transfer to the MTR
  • take a train to Lai King station and change
  • take a train to Prince Edward Station and change
  • take a train to Kowloon Tong where you transfer to the East Rail Line
  • catch a train to Wo Lu/Luo Hu border

Huanggang Port: From Tsim Sha Tsui, there’s a bus that goes directly to Huanggang Entry Port, travel is time is about 40 minutes. If you prefer to take the MTR: Central > Mong Kok > Mong Kok East Station > Lok Ma Chau Station > Huanggang border. Huanggang port is a full-time port in China, it means you can apply for VOA at the immigration any time of the day.

Shekou Port: The easiest way to get to Shekou Port is by ferry. Premier Jetfoil from Hong Kong International Airport to Shenzhen Airport departs at 19:10 every day, and the number is 8S133, while that from Shenzhen Airport to HKIA departs at 18:00 every day, and the number is 8S313. (source) You can apply for VOA at Shekou Port during these hours: 9 am to 1pm, and then 2:30pm to 5:00pm

When was this 5 day visa on arrival introduced?

shenzhen special economic zone tourist visa

The Shenzhen Visa upon arrival was reintroduced earlier this year, but this was long implemented. There’s already a 5 day VOA in 2008, when Beijing Olympics took place.

When was it last updated?

The thing about Chinese government is that it likes to switch and change the rules over which nationalities are eligible for the visa. In fact, the Chinese Foreign Ministry clearly pointed out that the list of eligible nationalities is subject to change without prior notice, hence there really is no way to obtain a final list of nationalities eligible / not eligible to enter China.

How much does it cost?

This 5 day visa’s cost depends on your nationality. For most nationalities, it costs around 160RMB. I’ve read somewhere that the visa fee for American Passport Holder is around RMB 956, and 469RMB for UK passport holders.

What can you do in Shenzhen China for 5 days?

shenzhen special economic zone tourist visa

Shenzhen is one of China’s most successful and fastest growing special economic zones. Here’s what you can do with your 5 day visa:

Shop: Coco Park, Yitian Holiday Plaza, KK Mall and CR Vientiane City plaza – these are the top shopping malls of Shenzhen. If you plan to shop for Electronics, the SEG computer market is the best place to go – this is known for its largest collection of electronic retailers in Asia. If you like to shop for clothes and handicrafts, you may want to try shopping at Dongmen Area – where you can find streets filled with clothing merchandise, and huge shopping centers. Basically, shopping at Shenzhen is quite overwhelming, it’s more like a maze of shops catering almost everything you could think of.

Eat: Dim sum, Chinese seafood dishes, Sichuan hot pot, Teochew cuisine and Chow mein – make sure not to miss all these Chinese food while you’re at Shenzhen.

Do Business: Shenzhen has the best hardware factories and has a wide variety of products you might want to check out for future/existing business venture.

Tourist Spots: Window of the World, Shenzhen Central Park, OCT East, Coco Park, China Folk Culture Village – these are just some of Shenzhen’s many tourist spots.

Important Things to Know Before Visiting Shenzhen with 5-day VOA

1. You are only allowed to stay at Shenzhen urban area and countryside 2. Visa-on-arrival expires exactly at 5th day, and you should leave China before it expires 3. Those not eligible for VOA like Indonesians and Filipinos, can get fined for entering without valid Chinese visa. 4. You should bring your old passports (probably to check countries you have previously gone to) 5. Only RMB is accepted for visa payment. 6. If you overstay, you might end up at China’s Public Security Bureau and face a hefty fine.

Hi, would it be possible to have a VOA at the shenzhen airport? We are flying from the Philippines.

shenzhen special economic zone tourist visa

We were flying from Amsterdam to Sydney via Hangzhou and Shenzhen. We were not warned nor prompted by the airline about visa for the transit in Shenzhen, but we were taken off the plane before departure in Amsterdam, because we had no visa for Shenzhen. We had to cancel our trip to Australia entirely, which was extremely disappointing. We already had visa for Australia, a return flight AMS-SYD and many hotel bookings in Australia.

The transit-time in Shenzhen was 2 hours and 20 minutes. Information about visa in Shenzhen on the internet is ambiguous. We wonder if we really needed visa and were correctly taken off the plane. Or were they wrong? In the last case, we may deserve a full refund. But were can we find the official regulation regarding visa in Shenzhen? Can you help us with this issue?

Updated 5-Day Shenzhen visa on arrival to China

The 5-day visa on arrival at the border between China and Hong Kong was reintroduced earlier this year. We’ve gathered all the up-to-date information on who, where, when and how you can obtain a 5-day visa at the Shenzhen border, and how much it costs.

Obtaining any visa can be a time-consuming affair and this visa could save you a lot of hassle, especially if you’re on a business trip to Hong Kong and want to head to Mainland China for an impromptu meeting, or just want to explore Shenzhen for a few days. Let’s have a look at the most recent updates from the Mainland.

What is the 5-day visa on arrival in Shenzhen China?

As the title suggests this is a short term visa valid for 5 days travel into Mainland China which you can purchase at the border crossings from Hong Kong into Shenzhen. The visa grants you a single entry, which means once you exit again you won’t be allowed back into China until you get a new visa. This visa is equally good for business professionals and tourists, as there is an abundance of attractions in Shenzhen alone that would make your trip worthwhile.

Business professionals use this visa as an opportunity to gain insight into the city for expanding their companies, or to visit any of the top 5 tech giants who shape Shenzhen 'China's Silicon Valley' .   You are free to venture into the surrounding areas to visit local factories , view possible locations your new venture, or take a look at some office space in the CBD. You could arrange a visit to the Hongda HQ for some expert guidance in this respect.

Tourists , on the other hand, use their time to explore the diverse culture of this city and experience first-hand the wonder of how a fishing village turned into a top economic zone . Some of the things tourists can explore when in Shenzhen are:

  • Visit “The whole China under one roof” at the Chinese Folk Culture Village
  • Try food from all over China,
  • Treat yourself to some world class shopping and a relaxing afternoon at the spa,
  • Play a round of golf at the world famous Mission Hills

**Updated section as of October 2017**

Where can I get a 5-day visa?

There are a few border crossings you could use to obtain a VOA for Shenzhen, below is a list of the different borders and office hours you can  use to apply for the visa.

Office Hours of Shenzhen VOA Application at the Following Ports:

  • Luohu Port: 07:00 - 23:30
  • Huanggang Port: 00:00 - 24:00

In LuoHu as you walk towards the China customs (after HK immigration) follow the signs that says “Foreigners” and look for a sign that says “Port Visa,” there'll be an escalator in the middle of the room leading up to the visa office with money exchange too (you'll do better to exchange money into RMB in HK or your own country before being here though). The visa office looks like a bank, with seating for waiting, and glass counters where the immigration officers will take payment, details, etc.

Shenzhen Bay in Nanshan, and Lok Ma Chau (Futian) borders  do not  offer VOA (as of October 2017) - to enter Shenzhen via these borders you will need a Chinese visa from elsewhere already in your passport.

How Do I Apply & How Much Does it Cost?

All you need is a valid passport and enough money to pay the visa fee.

You'll need to:

  • Fill out the application form
  • Provide a passport photo (which can be taken there for a small fee)
  • Pay the fee

The application form is relatively simple, you'll basically fill in:

  • Passport number and expiry date
  • Address in SZ
  • Place of birth

The immigration officers will then create and stick the visa into your passport (note that it takes up a whole page). The entire process usually takes a few minutes, depending on the amount of people applying at the time.

The general price is 168 RMB for most nationals (although the price can vary based on nationality) i.e for a UK passport holder it will be around 314 RMB . The fee must be paid there at the booth and has to be local currency (RMB), you will easily find foreign currency exchange windows at the border crossings, in case you don’t have RMB on you.

The border staff speak English and can advise you of any recent changes in procedure.

How To Pay?

RMB in cash is recommended as it's simple , and Unionpay is China's electronic payment method and so if your card has that it's fine too. With the exception of Mastercard, you could also use Visa and American Express, but as with all foreign payment methods, there's a chance they wouldn't work.

New Call-to-action

Who Can Get The Visa?

This list changes often and without notice and thus we cannot guarantee its exact accuracy, as there is no way of obtaining an official list. The list below is understood to be the most accurate list up to date. If you have experienced anything different than what’s written here, please leave a comment in the comment section below, be it good or bad.

It is our understanding that Australian, Canadian, Irish, New Zealand and EU passport holders are eligible. UK passport holders are currently eligible for this visa, but it does tend to change on a regular basis. US passport holders are now eligible , but the cost of 956RMB is punitive and it is the same as getting a 10 year multi entry visa from the embassy (so don't apply for this VOA if you're American, get your visa in advance).

Here is a list of the countries that are NOT allowed this particular VOA for Shenzhen (you will still be able to get a Chinese visa in most cases, but must apply in advance from the local embassy):

If your country is not listed here you should be eligible to obtain a 5-Day VOA, but it is good to know that whatever the result is on the day, you will be allowed to go back to Hong Kong in any event without any hassles. If you  do  need to return to HK due to being denied a VOA, using the LuoHu border is best as it is linked to HK by metro which run every few minutes, whereas from Huanggang you'd need to catch a bus or taxi.

Good To Know...

  • Having held a Chinese visa previously  will  benefit your application. Be prepared to provide the visa/s.
  • If you have a relatively new passport, say around a year old, you will need to produce your old passport, otherwise it is likely you'll be denied the VOA.
  • Stamps to certain countries, such as Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan, will probably result in your VOA being denied regardless of your nationality (Oct 17).

Alternative options for a VOA to China:

Zhuhai offers a 3-Day VOA at   Gongbei Port ,note that  you will   only   be   allowed to visit   Zhuhai   when obtaining a visa there. When at Gongbei, as soon as you pass the duty-free shops there will be a green door on the right-hand side of the immigration building, you can apply for your visa there. The visa cost is 168 RMB for most countries, but UK nationals have to pay 469 RMB. Only RMB is accepted for visa payment.

China’s largest   Tropical Island Hainan   offers a 15 to 21 visa-free stay for tourists from the 26 countries listed below, considering you travel as a group of more than 5 members, organized by an International Travel Agency in Hainan.

Known eligible countries at the moment:

Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Singapore, Thailand, UK, USA and Ukraine.

We wish you all the best, and hope you enjoy your stay whether it's for business or pleasure and if you do have any questions about doing business in China, setting up a company here, or need information regarding visas please don’t hesitate to contact Hongda or visit our HQ in Luo Hu.

How to Get a Shenzhen Visa in Hong Kong

Ian Trower/AWL Images Collection/Getty Images

Information on how to get a Shenzhen Visa can be hard to come by - at least up to date information is - with travel agents, Chinese embassies and your hotel often giving conflicting information on who can and can't get a Shenzhen Visa. We have put together what we believe to be the most concrete information on the Shenzhen Visa situation.

In coordination with the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong and travelers real-life experiences, the information here will be kept updated. If your experience differs from the advice below, please drop us a line and let us know so we can issue an update.

What Is the Shenzhen Visa?

It is a visa on arrival valid only at the Hong Kong and Shenzhen border.

Who Is Eligible?

Most nationalities are eligible for a Shenzhen Visa, but there is notable exception. Citizens of the US and India cannot get a Shenzhen visa. Passport holders from Ireland, New Zealand and Canada can get a Shenzhen visa, and at the current time of writing so can citizens of Australia and the UK.

Where Can I Buy One?

You can only get a Shenzhen Visa at the Shenzhen border with Hong Kong. You can expect queues on certain days.

How Long Is a Shenzhen Visa Valid For?

Shenzhen visas are valid for five days. You absolutely must leave Shenzhen before the five days are up. This type of visa cannot be extended, and if you overstay the visa you will find yourself face to face with China’s Public Security Bureau and facing a hefty fine. You do not have to return to Hong Kong at the end of the visa, but you cannot travel further into China unless you have a valid Chinese Visa.

Where Can I Go With a Shenzhen Visa?

Shenzhen visas are valid for the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, including Shenzhen City , Shekou and most of the factories in the surrounding countryside. Guangzhou is not included in the Shenzhen Visa, nor is the wider Guangdong region.

If you plan to further into China, apply for a full Chinese visa. You need a visa to check into hotels in China, and if the Chinese police find you outside the Shenzhen SEZ with only a Shenzhen Visa, you will be fined and possibly deported.

How Much Do the Visas Cost?

Like prices for a Chinese Visa , prices depend on your nationality; however, the standard rate is HK$215 and applies to most European passport holders, Canadians, and Australians. Prices for UK citizens are substantially higher. You may only pay in Chinese Yuan or Hong Kong dollars.

  • No, Shenzhen Visas cannot be purchased in advance from an embassy or the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong. They can only be bought at the Hong Kong/Shenzhen border.
  • Shenzhen Visas are only valid for a single entry. There is no limit on how many Shenzhen visas you can obtain, although, if you want to visit Shenzhen several times you'd be better investing in a multiple entries Chinese Visa.

How to Obtain the 5-Days Visa (VOA) for Shenzhen

5-day visa shenzhen

Temporary visas for Shenzhen are issued for tourism purposes only. In the article below, we go into further details and update the information offered in our previous article on business visas , as well as give answers to the following questions.

How to Obtain the 5-Days Visa (VOA) for Shenzhen – Index

Why visit shenzhen.

  • Who can get a temporary visa for Shenzhen?

Where can I get a temporary visa for Shenzhen?

What are the requirements for obtaining a temporary visa and how much does it cost, how long does the temporary visa last and how many entries does it allow.

  • What are the steps for requesting a visa?
  • With this temporary visa, can I visit other Chinese cities in addition to Shenzhen?

Can I get this visa at my embassy or consulate?

Does this visa allow me to work in china.

  • Can I get a similar visa at the border between Macao and Zhuhai?

Shenzhen, known as the Silicon Valley of Asia, is one of the largest and most industrialized cities in the Canton province, and is adjacent to the Hong Kong special administrative region.

In addition to its tourism interest , Shenzhen is one of the special economic zones within China, which turns this city into a very attractive destination for both local and foreign businesses due to its special taxation regime, although it is still dependent on the Beijing central government.

Who can apply for this visa?

There is no official list of nationalities that can apply for this type of visa, and the conditions for obtaining it can vary without prior notice depending on the specific circumstances at the time of requesting the visa.

One example of this is French citizens. For years, they were unable to obtain this visa due to diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The latest information available says that now, French people are, in fact, able to obtain this type of visa.

Below is an (unofficial) list of countries based on whether their citizens can apply for this type of visa or not.

  • Countries whose citizens can apply for the temporary visa : The majority of European countries, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries
  • Countries whose citizens can apply for the visa with restrictions (by showing passports with visas previously issued by the Chinese government): Indonesia and the Philippines.
  • Countries whose citizens are unable to apply for this type of visa : Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Cameroon, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Uganda, and Yemen.

For the countries that aren’t mentioned, we don’t have reliable information on their situation, but it is most likely that they are in one of the first two situations. To get a general idea of the situation, check out the list of countries that can apply for a transit visa exception .

The 5-day visa for Shenzhen can be obtained at the Lo Wu (Luohu) border crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Keep in mind that many other border crossings between Hong Kong and Shenzhen still don’t have an office for issuing this type of visa, so, it’s recommendable to cross at Lo Wu.

In theory, you can also get this visa at the Huanggang Port, Shekou Port, and Fuyong Port border crossings. Nonetheless, information on this is unclear.

The requirements are the following:

  • A valid passport with at least two free pages and 6 months’ remaining validity;
  • The immigration form obtained upon entering Hong Kong .
  • The immigration form to enter China : You can get this form and fill it out at the Lo Wu border crossing.
  • 168 Chinese Yuan (CNY) : It is recommendable to bring Yuan in cash as well as to take extra in case they change the cost without prior notice. Also, note that for citizens of some countries it may be more expensive.
  • You don’t have to take a photograph as they take one when you apply.

This visa allows you to move freely around the city and industrial area of Shenzhen. Given that it is only single-entry, if you want to go there multiple times, we also recommend that you check out a multiple-entry visa , which you can obtain at the Chinese embassy in your country.

What are the steps for applying for this type of visa?

From Hong Kong, take the subway to the Lo Wu stop, where you will find a border crossing (hours of operation: 06:00 to 00:00).

Without leaving the station, follow the signs in English. Look for the Visitors signs (Other than Mainland Visitors).

visa on arrival (VOA) china

When you arrive at the first checkpoint, hand over your passport along with the white Hong Kong immigration form. They will take this form away from you, as you are exiting Hong Kong. Continue to walk along the main walkway. When you get to the end, you will see a large number of passport checkpoints for entry into China.

When these checkpoints are just in front of you, turn to the left and go up an escalator. On the left-hand side, you will see a booth with visa application forms. Fill one out and move on to the glass room to your right.

shenzhen visa Lo Wo

The first thing that you need to do is to take a ticket for the lineup. There is a machine at the entrance to the room. Wait until they call you from one of the windows, probably the third one to the right. You will have to go to three windows with 3 police agents that most likely won’t speak English, and who will ask for the following:

First of all, they are going to ask for your passport and the ticket from the machine and will tell you to look at the camera on the other side of the window. Next, you go to the window to the right, pay for the visa (168 Yuan), pick up your ticket and wait for them to call you from the third window, where you will pick up your passport with the visa.

Once you have everything, go down the stairs and fill out the Chinese entry form before heading to one of the border agents. Once you’re there, they will take away part of the arrival card and part of the departure card, which you will keep until leaving the country.

arrival card china

With the temporary visa, can I travel to other Chinese cities than Shenzhen?

This visa only allows you to travel in the Shenzhen special economic zone, which includes the city of Shenzhen, Shekou, and the factories located in the surrounding countryside.

No. You have to request this visa at the time of crossing at the Lo Wu border crossing.

No, it is only a tourist visa.

Can I get a similar visa at the border crossing between Macao and Zhuhai?

Yes. In Macao, and in particular, at the Gongbei Port border crossing, you can get a 3-day visa exclusively for visiting Zhuhai.

The requirements, the application process, and the price are the same as for Shenzhen.

For Visa on Arrival to Shenzen, is it still at the Lo Wu (Luohu) border crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen only? If not, can I know the other places? Which one is the most convinience one?

The artictle states “168 Chinese Yuan (CNY): It is recommendable to bring Yuan in cash as well as to take extra in case they change the cost without prior notice.”

This information is NOT correct. I entered Shenzhen via Luohu 2 weeks ago. Payment for the port visa is ONLY possible by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, JCB), WeChat Pay or Alipay. Cash is NOT accepted.

Thanks has anyone tried to get the Shenzhen visa on arrival since Jan 8 2023? Has it restarted?

' data-src=

Is the VOA back yet as of today 1/17/2023?

I don’t think so, they aren’t issuing tourist visas yet and VOA probably will be the last thing to go back

I don’t think so, you might need to wait some months. First they need to start issuing tourist visas

They are not issuing tourist visas at the moment

Hi, we are a family from The Netherlands. We want to travel from Hong Kong to Shenzhen and use the VOA service. I have used it before, so I am familiar with it. But this time, we also bring our minor children, age 17 and 14. Can they also use the VOA service ? Is it enough to have their birth certificate in English, or are there any other demands ? Thank you in advance !

Will be visiting Hong Kong and going to Shen Zen, have done this many times, but have been told by friends that they have waited over two and a half hours at the visa office at the border and an Australian lady in the party refused a visa on her first visit. Hope to make my visit in late November, have you heard of similar experiences?

I don’t know Jenny, but it’s certainly possible that you either have to wait or won’t be granted a visa. I mean, there is no such a “guarantee” to get a Chinese visa

The 5-day VISA is available at (the new) Shekou Ferry Port. I recently brought my brother and his wife from HK to Shekou on the ferry and they had no problems getting the visas.

After getting off the ferry, head towards customs/immigration. Just as you see the immigration desks, there’s a large sign hanging from the ceiling on the left: “Port Visa”. There’s a desk in front with the applications forms. Fill one out, get your photographs from one of the two photo booths there (they’re free), and hand in everything at the window under the sign.

As Luc says, they did ask for the old passports. My brother’s passport was issued in 2013 and his wife’s in 2011. Strange but, anyway, we didn’t have them and the official accepted that. She went away for a few minutes, came back and handed back the passports with the temporary visas stuck inside. No problems!! Straight on to the immigration desks with the passports and the Arrival Cards.

Two points of note: 1. Even though my guests were coming over in the morning and going back in the evening, i.e. no hotel, they were required to put down an address in China. They used my hotel address and it wasn’t queried. 2. Yes, as Daniel says in the article, the price is RMB 168 for most countries but some are more expensive. Two in particular I noticed were: UK RMB 304 and USA RMB ~990. We handed in cash. Sorry, I didn’t notice what other methods of payment were acceptable.

Hope this helps someone.

Hello Nigel,

thanks a lot for taking the time to explaining this to our readers : )

Will a tourist pass into Hong Kong be ok, or are certificates of residence, employment status, or other valid certificates of legal stay in Hong Kong required? Is Daya Bay, Shenzhen for China Cup International Regatta within the zone?

' data-src=

Hi, I’m a UK citizen. Just to say that today I tried to go through into Shenzhen and they were not able to process my application because they wanted to see both my old passport and my new passport. I was really surprised. Also worth mentioning that as of 2017 they do NOT have the 5 day visa service at Futian checkpoint (After queing for ages, I had to go all the way back on the train and then catch another train to Luowu) Thanks

thank you for your comment.

It may be related to the fact that they are starting to ask for old passports, for people that have a passport newer than 1 Jan 2015

Luohu and Futian are most used with convenient connection by metro and MTR system, Huanggang is the only one serving 24 hours a day, Shekou is suitable to go by cruise, and West Kowloon Terminus is for you to take bullet train directly to/from Hong Kong downtown and offers convenient inspection and clearance at one site. Check the following to choose the most suitable one for you!

Shenzhen Checkpoint

Top 1 - Luohu to Hong Kong

Luohu Port (罗湖口岸) (Lo Wu Port) is the most used border checkpoint for people going between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The seamless connection of Shenzhen Metro and Hong Kong MTR makes Luohu Port a top consideration for both domestic and foreign people. And that means and truly there always many and many people queuing in the hall for border crossing either from Hong Kong or from Shenzhen.

Top 2 - Huanggang to Hong Kong

Huanggang Port (皇岗口岸) is the only border checkpoint opening 24 hours a day in Shenzhen so far and a lot of cross-border buses between Shenzhen and Hong Kong go through this port. • Clearance Time: 15 minutes
  • Transportation: Shenzhen Metro, Huanggang Lok Ma Chau Shuttle Bus, Hong Kong MTR

3. Take the Huanggang Lok Ma Chau Shuttle Bus from Huanggang on Shenzhen side to Lok Ma Chau on Hong Kong side;

Option 2: Cross-border Buses

Besides, there are some cross-border buses serving from Huanggang Port to many stations in Hong Kong, including Wan Chai, Prince Edward, Kam Sheung Road, and Hong Kong International Airport. However, crossing this Huanggang Port by cross-border buses, you need to get off the bus when arrive at the port and go through the clearance procedure with all your luggage and belongings. After your customs clearance, come out from the customs building and get on the bus to Hong Kong. Due to such not so convenient step, Huanggang Port is relatively not very popular for locals to and from Hong Kong, however, it has lower flow rate, so if you want to transfer with shorter line, this port is also good to choose.
