European Single Trip Breakdown Cover is, although an absolute mouth-full, a great way to help ensure your next road trip or continental getaway goes as smoothly as possible. The last thing we want on our holidays is to be stranded by the side of a road with a breakdown in a country where you don’t speak the language, with no help available.

From Iceland to Sicily, our single trip policy will offer you the peace-of-mind necessary for you to get the most out of your holiday. With a 24-hour claims line and a team of dedicated responders, if the worst should happen during your trip, there’ll be people ready to assist you when the moment comes.

What is Single Trip European Breakdown Cover?

Single trip European breakdown cover is designed for people who go away to Europe with their caronly once a year.

With single trip cover it’s easy to choose the exact days you need the breakdown insurance for so you’ll know you’ll be covered for the entirety of your trip, leaving you with one less thing to worry about.

What Does Single Trip European Breakdown Cover Include?

Single trip European breakdown cover provides you with the following policy benefits:

The staple of any breakdown policy is getting someone out to you as quickly as possible to try and assist you at the roadside. Some European roads can be remote and, depending on where you breakdown, waiting for assistance can occasionally be stressful. However, with the right cover in place you’ll be safe in the knowledge that you're not on your own.

Onward Travel Options

If the repairs to your vehicle are not possible immediately, as necessary parts may be required then the onward travel benefit will provide you with options to either wait for the vehicle to be repaired or continue your journey and return to collect when repaired. The options available are, Overnight Accommodation, Public Transport or a Hire Car.

If your destination is a little further away, and you’d rather stay closer to your vehicle, then finding yourself some alternative accommodation for the evening may be a good option. you can get yourself accommodation for the period you’re waiting for (up to £500 total) so you can wait out the repair in comfort.

Hire Car During Repair If your destination is someway but repairs will take a few days, to help keep you on the move, you can option for a Hire Car for which the policy will reimburse you up to a total of £250, to get you and your passengers to your destination. Publlic transport

If you’re near the end of your journey and your desired destination isn’t that far away but again repair may take a few days, then public transport may be the right choice for you.

Taking a bus or train to complete your journey could be quicker and less stress than continuing to wait for your car to be fixed. You can pay for your ticket (making sure you keep all records and receipts) and you can claim up to £300 through us once you return home.

If the repair to your vehicle is not possible before your return to the UK the breakdown damage is severe, you will be offered the option of full repatriation of yourself, your passengers or your vehicle back to the UK.

Do make sure you check the policy wording for all terms and exclusions to make sure you get the right cover for you.

Single trip vs. Annual European Breakdown Cover

It can be difficult deciding which European cover level is right for you out of single trip or annual. If you’re planning on several trips abroad then annual cover may be more suitable for you – however if you rarely travel to Europe in your car, then single trip is most likely better for you.

Make sure you think about your cover level carefully because unfortunately we can’t change you cover form annual to single or vice versa once you’ve purchased.

Which Countries Will I Be Covered In?

If whether you choose a single-trip or annual European policy, you’ll be covered in the following countries and regions:

Albania, Andorra, Austria, Balearics, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canary Isles, Corsica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Madeira, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, San Marino, Sardinia, Serbia, Sicily, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Vatican City.

What Happens if I Breakdown Whilst on Holiday?

Breaking down whilst on holiday can be a real headache, but if you have cover in place then all you need to do is give your assistance provider a call and they’ll take care of the rest.

We use a network of local recovery agents across Europe who will try and get your car fixed at the roadside.

Our FAQs are intended as a guide and are not exhaustive, you should not rely on these in their entirety and should read the Policy Wording for all policy Terms, Conditions and Exclusions. Compare our best European breakdown cover

European breakdown cover can save you time and money if your car breaks down abroad, get european breakdown cover.

RAC

What is European breakdown cover?

European breakdown cover protects you if your vehicle breaks down while you're overseas. If your car breaks down without it, you may have to pay hundreds of pounds out of your own pocket.

The best European breakdown cover can include roadside assistance if your vehicle stops and won’t restart during a journey. It even helps with costs if your car needs to be taken back to the UK for repairs.

If you visit Europe often, it's a good idea to compare quotes and find a European breakdown policy that can cover your vehicle overseas. Don’t just opt for the cheapest – pick the policy that best suits your needs.

European breakdown cover is not included in standard UK breakdown policies."

Do I need European breakdown cover?

Whether you need this type of insurance will depend on your circumstances and what cover you already have in place. There are two ways to get European breakdown cover:

Add it to your policy if you already have standard breakdown cover

Buy a standalone European breakdown cover policy for your trip

How to choose the best European breakdown cover

Consider the type of policy you need, look at the extras, take your time, what is covered.

Europe-wide breakdown policies broadly offer the same cover as standard UK policies, including 24-hour helplines, roadside assistance and vehicle recovery.

With European breakdown cover your insurer will arrange to send a mechanic to you or meet you at a safe location if your car’s needs to be towed off the motorway by a local operator.

You can also get extra protection with European breakdown cover, including:

Cover before departure

Vehicle and passenger repatriation

Customs duty indemnity

Decide what you need your policy to cover before comparing policies to ensure you get the protection you want.

Which countries will I be covered in?

How much does european breakdown cover cost.

The cost of European breakdown cover depends on several factors:

The length of your trip or trips: the price differs depending on whether you're going for a few days or several weeks, over one or more multiple trips abroad. Buying annual European breakdown cover is likely to be more expensive if you’re only travelling overseas once, and for a week or two. However, if you make several or longer trips to the continent in a single year, an annual policy is likely more cost-effective

Which country you visit: while policies usually cover most of Europe, certain countries may be more expensive than others, especially for vehicle repairs. Other countries, such as Russia, won’t be covered by standard policies

The type of vehicle you’re driving: some cars are more expensive to repair in different parts of Europe, depending on the availability of parts. Breakdown cover should cover these costs for you, but your vehicle’s make and model may affect your premiums

The level of cover: the more extensive the cover, the more it will cost

As always, comparing European breakdown cover quotes is the best way to find a policy that gives you the cover you need at a price you can afford.

Can I get European breakdown cover for older vehicles?

While some breakdown cover providers will cover cars of any age, others set maximum age limits, such as 16 years. This is because older vehicles are more likely to break down and can be more expensive to repair.

That said, while there are fewer insurers willing to provide cover, and it may cost more, you can still get breakdown cover for an older car. Paying a little more for breakdown cover would still be cheaper than covering any costs yourself.

Can I get cover for a single trip?

Yes, you can get a policy that covers one trip to Europe if you’re looking to go away for one to 31 days. You may be able to get cover for longer trips if you speak to your preferred insurer or a broker.

Will I need to speak the local language to get help?

Even if you’re pretty fluent in a foreign language, the fact that you can call a UK-based helpline to arrange for an engineer to come and help you is a big plus. After all, could you explain exactly what seems to have gone wrong with your car to a local mechanic over the phone?

Can I cover a motorhome or caravan in Europe?

Yes, most policies can protect these vehicles when you go to Europe. Find out what vehicles a breakdown policy can cover here.

What happens if I have to return home before my car is fixed?

Most policies cover the cost of returning your car to the UK. Some also give you a hire car while you wait for your car.

Will I be covered before I go abroad?

Yes, most policies offer cover before your departure. This means you can use your breakdown policy for up to seven days before you leave the UK.

Why do I need European Breakdown cover?

When you’re driving in another country, the last thing you’ll want to do is break down abroad. And if you don’t have insurance, there’s a lot you’ll need to sort out. First, you’ll have to find an English-speaking recovery company who understand your problem and can tow you to safety. Then, you’ll need to find a garage to fix your car. Plus, if you can’t get your car fixed before you return, you’ll need to pay the cost of getting you and your car back home. Not only is this process stressful and time consuming, but the cost of recovery, labour and repair can be incredibly expensive.

But, if you take out European Breakdown cover, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that help is at hand, 24/7. You can call our English-speaking helpline at any time, so you can focus on enjoying your holiday, knowing you’re protected.

We will try our best to repair your car at the side of the road and, if this isn’t possible within an hour, we’ll take your car to the nearest garage for expert repairs. If you’re still not moving within eight hours, we’ll provide you with a suitable replacement vehicle or overnight accommodation. This way, you can relax and enjoy the rest of your holiday as planned.

My car is over 10 years old; can I still get Breakdown cover for Europe?

Unfortunately, if your car is over 10 years old, we’re unable to provide you with breakdown cover for your European trip. This is because, as per our policy documents , our European Breakdown cover only covers cars that are 10 years old or less.

Please be aware that, if your car is over 10 years old and you take out our breakdown cover for Europe, your policy will not be valid.

Which countries am I covered for

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • Switzerland
  • Vatican City

How long am I covered for?

When you take out our European Breakdown cover, a single trip to Europe must not last longer than 31 days in duration. In addition, travel must not exceed 90 days in total during the period of cover.

This means, whether you’re looking for European Breakdown cover for a single trip or something that covers you annually, our cover is suitable for most travellers. The full level of cover that applies to your European Breakdown cover is shown in your confirmation email.

What should I do if my car breaks down in Europe?

If your car breaks down on your trip, you’ll need to contact us as soon as possible. You should always contact us before making any arrangements of your own.

You can call us on 1800 882560 or 00353 1 6373658. Both of these lines are open 24/7.

Before you call us, please prepare the following information:

  • The location of the vehicle
  • The registration number of your vehicle
  • A contact telephone number
  • A description of the problem

This will make it easier to provide us with the relevant information, and help us to deal with your claim as soon as we can.

What happens if I break down when towing a caravan or trailer?

If you take out our European Breakdown cover and your vehicle breaks down while towing a caravan or trailer, we will arrange for your caravan or trailer to be taken close by to the repairer. We will not, however, be liable for any goods, possessions or livestock being transported.

To be covered under our policy, your caravan or trailer must not exceed the following dimensions:

  • 3,500 kg in weight (including load)
  • 7 metres in length
  • 3.0 metres in height
  • 2.3 metres in width

Please note that we will not repair any caravan or trailer that you are towing, and motor homes are not covered by our policies.

How to choose the best European breakdown cover

When it’s time to compare european breakdown cover, read our guide before you buy.

single trip eu breakdown cover

If you’re headed across the channel to Europe, either for business or pleasure, there are plenty of reasons why taking your own car to the continent is a good idea.

For starters, taking all your families belongings in the boot of a car is much simpler than attempting to carry it in and out of airports, plus there is the added bonus of no weight restrictions while and the ‘door to door’ option is undoubtedly more convenient if you’ve got time on your side. Those extra hours on the road are a small price to pay for avoiding stressful airports, noisy children on planes, and delayed flights.

•  Driving in France: top tips

Yes, driving your car abroad is definitely an appealing option – until something goes wrong, that is, when the whole experience can quickly turn into a nightmare. Even the most happy-go-lucky motorist may discover that a French motorway breakdown in the dead of night, miles from the next town and without the proper kit, is not the best time to be explaining to your nearest and dearest how it didn’t seem worth bothering with European breakdown insurance.

So naturally, if you’re planning that trip across the English Channel, you’ll want to ascertain that your breakdown cover is well and truly sorted before you reach the ferry. It’s not simply a matter of knowing your policy is up to date either, as the level of service offered by different Euro breakdown providers can vary wildly.

Because no two policies are the same when it’s time to compare breakdown cover it’s essential to look beyond the price and understand how you’ll be looked after should the worst happen.

Do you have European breakdown cover already?

There’s no point paying for breakdown cover twice, so naturally, it’s worth checking your existing car insurance and breakdown policies to see whether there’s any European cover included. There very often is, but equally the cover can be quite limited, and you might need an upgrade if you want to cover all eventualities.

single trip eu breakdown cover

European breakdown cover may also be offered as part of a bank account, attached to a new car warranty, or part of a motoring club membership. In all these cases it's vital to check the limitations, as it isn't ideal just getting free roadside recovery to the nearest local garage in France. It could be in the middle of nowhere, without a hire car office in sight!

Get the right kind of cover for your trip

So most people will need to choose the right kind of European breakdown cover - one that actually helps you in the event of a breakdown. There are plenty of providers, so it can be hard to find the best ones - but luckily Auto Express readers tell us which they are every year in our Driver Power survey.

The current winner is GEM Motoring Assist - and it has been for five years so far. If you're a GEM member already, you can add on European breakdown cover to your existing policy - and that's the case with most of the major providers including the AA, RAC, and Green Flag.

Read the small print

Just make sure you read the small print - always know what you get for your money. Some breakdown cover will send someone to help fix your car at the side of the road, while others will only offer a towing service. Some cover parts and labour, while others don't, and some will ask you to pay a garage directly and then claim the cost back afterwards (others will simply pay the bill for you). There are even types of cover that have an allowance for you to continue your holiday journey or pay for accommodation.

• Top tips for driving on the right

Most European breakdown cover can be purchased as part of an annual package, or for a single trip at a reduced cost. If you're just heading out on a planned holiday, the single option is likely better value, but for those who like to be spontaneous or expect multiple journeys across the channel, the annual option may be a better bet.

European motorhome breakdown cover for privately owned vehicles up to 8 metres in length

It is what motorhomes were designed for, extended trips to foreign climes without a care in the world. However, what happens if your holiday plans are derailed? What happens if you are at the extremes of Europe’s borders and are left stranded without little hope of making it home?

We have policies which have been designed with the motorhome in mind, and which will keep your holiday on track should the worst happen.

Our European motorhome breakdown cover will ensure you’re not left stranded in the event of a breakdown, accident or if your motorhome is broken into or stolen. Whether you require breakdown cover for a single journey in your motorhome within Europe or plan on travelling to the edge of the Continent and back multiple times, both our single and annual multiple trip policies will provide cover for a wide range of events. With the support of our assistance partner, you can be sure any problems with your motorhome will be dealt with quickly, ensuring the minimum disruption to your journeys plans.

Our European motorhome breakdown policies offer excellent all round levels of cover, designed to prepare you for a range of eventualities. With either single trip or annual insurance for your motorhome, we can help you get back on the road. For example, if your motorhome requires roadside assistance while in Europe, our breakdown cover can make sure you are towed to a local garage, given a replacement car or even provided with overnight accommodation. Alternatively, our policies can support you if your motorhome is stolen, or if you require legal funds.
