Spirit of the Danube deck plan review at CruiseMapper provides newest cruise deck plans (2024-2025-2026 valid floor layouts of the vessel) extracted from the officially issued by Saga River Cruises (Saga Cruises) deckplan pdf (printable version).

Each of the Spirit of the Danube cruise ship deck plans are conveniently combined with a legend (showing cabin codes) and detailed review of all the deck's venues and passenger-accessible indoor and outdoor areas. A separate link provides an extensive information on Spirit of the Danube staterooms (cabins and suites), including photos, cabin plans and amenities by room type and category.

MS Spirit of the Danube (2022-built) is the second of Saga Group's newbuild riverboats - together with the sisterships Spirit of the Rhine (2021), Spirit of the Moselle (2025), Spirit of the Main (tba) and Spirit of the Elbe (tba). These vessels are operated via the UK-based subsidiary company Saga Cruises .

SAGA UK's river ships are operated under a charter and those vessels are owned by different companies (shipowners and cruise lines). SAGA UK's ocean ships are Spirit of Discovery (2019) and Spirit of Adventure (2020).

Saga Spirit of the Danube cruise ship deck plan shows a total of 95 staterooms for 182 passengers served by 40 crew/staff, with 4 passenger decks, wellness area (small Gym room on deck 1), Panoramic Restaurant (on deck 2, with adjacent galley/kitchen), Panoramic Bar Lounge (on deck 3, serves as music salon/cinema/lecture hall and has a grand piano, dance floor, terrace with outdoor seating, library/reading corner), Foyer (lobby area on deck 3 with Reception Desk, Tour Desk and ship entrances / portside and starboard), A La Carte Restaurant (aft on deck 3, 36-seats, complimentary).

On the Sundeck (deck 4) are the outdoor Terrace Lounge (also hosting alfresco dining with deck barbecues, bar service), the Wheelhouse (retractable Navigation Bridge), a shaded seating area (4 retractable awnings, deckchairs, tables), a large sunbathing area (with loungers and low tables), a deckgames area (with Giant Chess Board) and an aft-located Jacuzzi (outdoor whirlpool hot tub).

One glass elevator (midship-located passenger lift) connects all cabin decks. All decks are interconnected via stairs (forward, midship and aft), including a grand staircase in the Atrium (midship).

Deck layouts

Deck 01 - lower-cabins-gym, deck 02 - middle-cabins-restaurant, deck 03 - upper-cabins-lobby-lounge, deck 04 - sundeck-pool.

Saga is doubling its river cruise fleet with a new ship, Spirit of the Danube , set to launch next year.

Carrying just 190 guests, the ship joins Saga’s first river cruise ship, Spirit of the Rhine , which is preparing for its inaugural cruise in May this year.

The official keel laying ceremony took place in Vahali’s shipyard in Serbia on Wednesday. A ‘lucky’ penny was embedded into the first piece of hull, as per tradition, to mark the start of construction.

Saga Holidays CEO Chris Simmonds said: ‘Over the past few years, we’ve been focused on redefining river cruise range to provide a Saga designed experience for our guests.

‘Guests will be able to enjoy a range of first-class facilities and we cannot wait to show everything our latest ship has to offer.’

‘ Spirit of the Danube joining the fleet marks an exciting milestone in this journey and we cannot wait until she joins her sister ship Spirit of the Rhine next year. Guests will be able to enjoy a range of first-class facilities and we cannot wait to show everything our latest ship has to offer.’

With a design inspired by the nature found along the Danube, the new ship will depart from Amsterdam on its inaugural cruise in 2022 and destinations will include Budapest, Vienna, Tulcea and Rousse.

On board passengers will find a lounge, library, bar, sundeck with hot tub and two restaurants – including an intimate a la carte restaurant created in partnership with Michelin-star chef Mark Sargeant.

He was head chef at Claridge’s for Gordon Ramsey before opening his own restaurants, including Rocksalt in Folkestone, the hometown of Saga.

The celebrity chef will also be on board on select cruises – but he’s not the only star or special guest planning to join Spirit of the Danube once she’s in service.

John Suchet, TV presenter and natural historian Miranda Krestovnikoff, BBC’s Antiques Roadshow regular Eric Knowles and horticulturalist Sir Roddy Llewellynwill be among those giving talks, classes and Q&A sessions.

Boutique design

Releasing images of what the ship will look like, the interiors are luxurious, with touches of wood, gold, burnished metal, cloudy greys and dusky greens reminiscent of a boutique hotel and designed to enhance of the tree-lined banks of the river

Cabins on the main and upper decks have private French balconies and floor-to-ceiling views while lower deck cabins are light and airy thanks to the large picture windows.

Accessibility and Support

If you have any mobility restrictions, disabilities or medical needs, you’ll find the information you need here. It’s important to check the suitability of any holiday before you book. Our Travel Advisors will be happy to discuss this with you.

Whether you book online or via our sales team, we will ask you if you have any need for assistance at the time of booking. It’s best to let us know then if you have any special requirements. To take full advantage of the assistance available, you need to pre-book no less than 48 hours before departure unless specified otherwise.

If you’ve already booked and now need to notify us of any special requirements please contact our Customer Care team free on 0800 373 034.

River cruises and small ships

It is important to be aware that most river vessels and small ships do not have lifts and the stairs between decks can often be steep.

Some excursions involve a fair amount of walking, sometimes over uneven surfaces.

Please also note that on river cruises and small ships it’s common for two or more ships to moor alongside each other at a berth, and on these occasions you’ll need to walk through the other vessels when embarking or disembarking. We are not able to confirm in advance when this will be the case.

If you have a disability or reduced mobility and are considering a river cruise or a small ship cruise, please contact one of our advisors on 0800 300 400 to discuss the suitability before booking.

Excursions will vary in terms of how active they are. They can range from panoramic tours where the majority of sightseeing will take place from your vehicle, to strenuous activities covering uneven terrain and walking distances of over a mile.

We’ll send you a detailed itinerary for your holiday at least eight weeks before departure with information regarding excursions. If you’re in any doubt as to the suitability of the excursions, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss these with you.

If you require a wheelchair or scooter to take part in an excursion, this will need to be collapsible so it can be safely stored in the coach. You’ll also need to be able to fold or dismantle your wheelchair or scooter yourself and lift it into the coach’s luggage hold, or be accompanied by a travelling companion who can do this for you.

While we always try to use the most comfortable, well-equipped vehicles for our excursions, we are often limited by what’s available in a particular destination. So regrettably, if you’re unable to manage the steps on to a coach or other vehicle, you will not be able to join the excursion. This is due to the variety of vehicles used dependent on destination. In addition, as the vehicles used for excursions differ from place to place, there may be restrictions as to what mobility aids can be carried.

A big part of the cruising experience is what to wear and we know how important it is for many of our guests. During the day we advise casual wear, with the evening dress code starting from 6pm.

Ladies generally choose to wear a smart dress or an elegant blouse or top with trousers or skirt. Gentlemen can wear a smart open neck shirt and trousers. A jacket is optional, and we would ask that polo shirts, t-shirts, shorts and denim are kept for casual wear during the day.

You are welcome to dress up for the welcome drinks reception and Captain’s dinner.

Smoking Policy

The smoking area varies on our river cruise ships, so please ask one of our onboard team.

There’s no smoking anywhere else on board, including on cabin balconies.

Saga River Cruise Ships - Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube

Saga River Cruise Ships - Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube: Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube named in Arnhem

On 19 March, 2022 the brand-new Spirit of the Danube and its sister ship, Spirit of the Rhine , which undertook some Saga river cruising in late 2021, received their joint official naming ceremony in Arnhem in the Netherlands. Their Godmother is broadcaster and journalist, Dame Jenni Murray.

Both ships are owned by the shipping company Rijfers Nautical Management and built by VAHALI Shipyards.

The Master for Spirit of the Danube is Captain George Dudunica who hails from Romania and originally qualified as a First Officer through the River Navigation School. Captain Dudunica will be a familiar face to many Saga guests as he previously worked on the Filia Rheni between 2013 and 2019, during which time he qualified as Captain.

Spirit of the Rhine ’s Master is Captain Marinus Pols who is from Holland and operated Spirit of the Rhine on its sailings towards the end of 2021. Having grown up with parents who transported cargo ships around Europe, Marinus was born and raised on the water and became a Captain at the age of 22.

Vital statistics:

Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube host up to 182 guests who are served by up to 50 crew. The vessels have been designed to the highest specification and have four decks and 91 guest cabins. They are 135 metres in length and 11.4 metres wide.

The on-board facilities:

Guests can enjoy two restaurants on each ship – the Panorama, which is the main restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the smaller Rheinfels Restaurant on Spirit of the Rhine and the Delta Restaurant on Spirit of the Danube are open for a light lunch or dinner reservation. Selected drinks are included at lunch and dinner in all the restaurants.

Both ships also boast a beautiful sundeck with hot-tub and BBQ, an indoor and outdoor terrace, library, gym and stunning panoramic lounges with floor to ceiling windows to maximise the view.

The spacious Lorelei lounge on Spirit of the Rhine and Belvedere Lounge on Spirit of the Danube offer an early-risers breakfast, afternoon tea and an all-day tea and coffee station.

The reception desk is open 24-hours a day for guests and there is also a small shop on-board.

A lift connects the upper deck, middle deck, reception area and Panorama Restaurant.

Food and beverages:

Guests are spoilt for choice on the catering front, enjoying breakfast, the option of a substantial or lighter lunch, afternoon tea, dinner – both buffet and served meals - and a late-night snack, all of which are included in the price. Local dishes are also be served to give guests an authentic taste of the region and when the weather allows, there is a BBQ lunch on the sundeck. Selected drinks are also included with lunch and dinner.

The smaller 36-seat Rhinefels and Delta lounges, are perfect for a more intimate dinner with special dishes created for each respective ship by chefs Nick Nairn and Paul Rankin.

The cabins:

There are two different types of cabins on both ships. All have a clean, sophisticated design with Spirit of the Rhine reminiscent of Saga’s larger ocean ships and Spirit of the Danube based on an Art Nouveau and Danube Delta theme, with elements such as migratory birds used throughout the ship.

All cabins offer a view of the bank. Those on the upper and middle decks are 17m square and feature French balconies, while those on the lower deck are 14m square with windows.

Saga has invested in incredible art on board both ships, with Spirit of the Rhine ’s focusing on the river’s legends such as Lorelei and Rheinfels Castle, while the art on Spirit of the Danube is focused on its river namesake with a focus on the Art Nouveau of Vienna in the Belvedere Lounge and the Danube Delta in the restaurant.

On Spirit of the Danube , artists include Beth Nicholas who has used ink and liquid leaf and the theme of nature to create a distinctive and striking piece, Michelle McKinney , whose innovative applications of contemporary industrial materials have resulted in an ethereal and delicate 3D bird composition, and Ann Bubis who has created a stunning mosaic representing the river and the places of interest that run along it. Claire Brewster ’s work with entomological installations of flora and fauna has resulted in a fascinating depiction of the Danube region in 3D in the upper reception area and Andrew Malone whose work focuses on altered books and hand-cut paper artworks has created some fun pieces also reflecting the bird theme for the corridors.

On Spirit of the Rhine , Sunga Park uses her unique perspective of architecture and landscapes with watercolours to create a special commission of Rheinfels castle in the Rheinfels restaurant on board. Julie Shackson uses materials she finds in the natural world to create flowing landscapes with an emotional feel.

Butterflies are a theme of the ship too and appear in the artwork including the corridor pieces which were created by butterfly wing patterns by Lauri Dunn and Lisa Haftel’s 3D depiction of butterflies landing on ‘the Lorelei book’ in the Lorelei Lounge.

Jennifer Newman , whose work as a mixed media artist has led to unique depictions of the rivers’ topography are beautifully displayed on both ships

What’s included:

Saga Cruises newbuild Spirit of the Danube river vessel

First Look at Spirit of the Danube Interiors

Spirit of the Danube

Saga has announced that the newest addition to its river cruise fleet will be the Spirit of the Danube . The Spirit of the Danube will join its sister ship The Spirit of the Rhine from 2022.

A keel laying ceremony is took place 10 th February in Vahali’s shipyard in Serbia. This marks the official start of the construction of the ship.  As per tradition, a lucky penny will be laid and will become embedded into the first piece of hull marking the start of construction.

Cabin design and cabin layout for Saga's new river cruise vessel Spirit of the Danube

Commenting on the news, Saga Holidays CEO Chris Simmonds said: “Over the past few years, we’ve been focused on redefining river cruise range to provide a Saga designed experience for our guests. Spirit of the Danube joining the fleet marks an exciting milestone in this journey and we cannot wait until she joins her sister ship Spirit of the Rhine next year.  Guests will be able to enjoy a range of first-class facilities and we cannot wait to show everything our latest ship has to offer.”

The design for the 190-passenger vessel will be inspired by the culture and nature found along the Danube. Facilities include a lounge, library, bar and two restaurants. We had the opportunity to take a glimpse at the initial design concepts. We have to say, we think that guests are in for a real treat!

Nature meets culture

There’s a softness to the interior design that feels restful. Even the luxe touches of wood and gold, which contribute to the elevated boutique feel, are tempered. The metals are burnished, giving that real sense of history and place. The wicker work and lattice wood bridge the themes of nature meeting culture and bohemian style.

The colour palate is grown up pastels, muted and gorgeous. They spring to life in standout pieces such as the crane designs that currently rest above cabin headboards. The palette slides through cloudy greys and dusky jewel tones to the lush greens of public spaces. Here guests can really feel that they are on the tree-lined banks of the Danube.

spirit of the danube river cruise

We also feel a real sense of place from the tiling featured on some walls and floors. Pattern and tiling has been having a real moment in contemporary domestic and hospitality interiors. We’re excited to see a glimpse of it here aboard the Spirit of the Danube .

The freshness of the design is well tempered with a classic feel as befits Saga’s status as the leading provider of products and services for people over 50. These conceptual designs are correct at the time of publication. However, they are subject to change as Saga develops the detail of the ship.

The addition of the new ship comes as Saga announced that it would be mandatory for all guests to be fully vaccinated before travelling with the company. This decision was taken with the health and safety of customers as the number one priority. The new vaccination policy will be in addition to the detailed arrangements we have already put in place for when operations can restart.

Celebrating the History of the Danube

spirit of the danube river cruise

  • WHAT'S INCLUDED
  • DATES & PRICES
  • CONNECTIONS

It’s not just any river that has its own festival, but then the Danube isn’t just any river. In a large-scale, national and cross-national day of festivities, Danube Day is celebrated by the residents of over ten European countries on June 29.

Millions of travelers flock to the mighty Danube River every year — but have you ever wondered why?

Europe’s second largest waterway connects Central and Eastern Europe, flowing over 1,700 miles through ten countries—that’s more nations than any other river in the world. The Danube has had a front-row seat to some of Europe’s most significant moments in history and is home to four glittering capitals: Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Belgrade — plus numerous fascinating and legendary cities like Regensburg, Linz, Mohács, Vukovar, Ilok and Novi Sad.

The millions that live here take pride in the Danube’s history and everlasting allure. And so, once a year, the countries of the Danube get together to participate in a multi-nation celebration of this magnificent river. Partygoers celebrate with such entertainment as cook-offs, live music, photo competitions, delicious food, horse riding and archery. These celebrations are always a fun, festive way to enjoy time with friends and family and feel connected to both local communities and those across borders.

The Danube has inspired artists (as well as gourmet lovers and oenophiles) throughout the centuries. Beethoven, Mozart and Gustav Klimt were all either born here or drawn to the region as famous for its culture as its mouthwatering Riesling wines and Sacher-Torte cakes. Austria’s Johann Strauss II, who was born right on the Danube in Vienna, composed the classical masterpiece “The Blue Danube” in 1866, and since then, the namesake river has remained associated with this classical waltz.

Long a center of music, art and literature (and incredible cuisine and wines)

Architecture in the form of imposing castles and impressive cathedrals, such as Buda Castle and Melk Abbey, were built to take advantage of hills overlooking the Danube. And the enchanting Wachau Valley lies along the Danube as well, with locals and visitors alike charmed by its scenic beauty and world-class wines.

It is also a wonderful way to display a solidary commitment to environmental progress. A wide variety of diverse flora and fauna (over 5,000) live here, including 331 different types of birds, such as the White-tailed Eagle and Pygmy Cormorant. Along with the diverse ecosystem, the Danube is a source of drinking water and life for twenty million people. And of course, the river is a source of income for many residents, who make their living along the waterway.

Continue the celebration when learning more about the storied region of the legendary Danube River.

Viking River Cruises’ Romantic Danube: How To Make The Most Of Every Stop

River cruising is a popular way to get the ease and convenience of a cruise while enjoying a more intimate experience.

Viking River Cruises is one of the most recognized names in the industry, and we had the chance to take their eight-day Romantic Danube cruise in the wintertime. The cruise stops vary from year to year and season to season, but each version has stops in Germany, Austria, and Hungary.

During our trip, we wanted to indulge in one of our favorite travel hobbies: visiting different European Christmas markets . Not only did we immerse ourselves in many memorable Christmas markets, but we also explored some charming, beautiful, and historically important towns.

Viking River Cruises’ Romantic Danube offers so many different ways to optimize your time. Our experience was absolutely magical, and we wanted to share some suggestions for how to make the most of every stop on this unforgettable itinerary.

We were guests of Viking River Cruises on their Romantic Danube itinerary. All opinions expressed are our own and are based on our experiences.

Nuremberg, Germany

The Romantic Danube itinerary varies, sometimes beginning in Hungary and other times in Germany. The stops may vary slightly as well. But wherever your specific journey takes you along this beautiful river route, you’ll find a lot to explore.

Our itinerary began in the German city of Nuremberg . Steeped in World War II history, it witnessed the rise and fall of the Third Reich. History buffs can visit the Nazi Party Rally Grounds , the Nazi Documentation Center , and other historical sites.

But as the second-largest city in Bavaria (after Munich ), Nuremberg also has lots more to offer. The Old Town features beautiful half-timbered houses along with the medieval Imperial Castle . Art lovers can visit the home of German Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer , explore the Germanisches Nationalmuseum , and enjoy numerous art galleries around town.

The food is incredible in Nuremberg, so we recommend having at least one meal or hearty snack ashore. Don’t miss the city’s skinny German sausages served three to a roll or on a plate with sauerkraut or potato salad. Paired with a frosty local beer, it’s a perfect meal.

Stop by the open-air Hauptmarket in the city center for a colorful look at local produce, flowers, handmade gifts, and delicious food specialties. If you happen to be there during the holiday season , you’ll see the transformation of the Old Town into a winter wonderland where over 180 vendors make up the Christkindlesmarkt . Stalls display art, local products, handcrafted goods, and treats of the season. Glittering lights and fresh greenery enhance the festive atmosphere.

Regensburg, Germany

A well-preserved medieval city on the northern portion of the Danube River, Regensburg boasts some of the most interesting historic buildings in Bavaria.

The Altes Rathaus is a bright yellow building dating to the 1200s. The Thurn und Taxis Palace is the impressive residence of an aristocratic family that had amassed a fortune from postal operations in the early 1800s. During the holiday season, a Christmas market springs up on the castle grounds. The Porta Praetoria comprises the ruins of a gateway made of rough stone blocks dating to the 13th century. Neupfarrplatz, a Roman fortress built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, was later home to one of the first Jewish communities in Germany. The ornate German Gothic Saint Peter’s Cathedral is worth seeing, too. Walk across the Old Stone Bridge, a pedestrian walkway over the Danube, and then turn to see the colorful clock tower.

A UNESCO World Heritage site , Regensburg also has great food. The Historische Wurstkuchl , or Historic Sausage Kitchen, is 1,000 years old and the oldest sausage kitchen in Europe, maybe even in the world. If you have time, sit a while at the Weltenburger am Dom , a restaurant and brewery right next to the cathedral. Try the amazing schnitzel with a beer from Weltenburg Abbey, the oldest monastery brewery in the world.

Passau, Germany

Right on the Germany-Austria border, Passau is a picturesque city. It’s known as the City of Three Rivers, since it’s where the Danube, Ilz, and Inn Rivers come together. Something you won’t find in many other places is a wasserstand , a chart depicting high water marks from floods in the city center. It’s drawn on a wall of the old town hall as a reminder that while being at the confluence of three rivers may be beautiful, it is not without risks.

Art is important to Passau, with the city’s modern art museum and a unique glass museum containing more than 30,000 European pieces of art glass. Check out the fun Artists’ Alley, where cobblestones painted in bright colors line the streets and darling boutiques hold plenty of unique souvenirs.

Passau is home to one of the largest pipe organs in the world, with almost 18,000 pipes. It resides in the gorgeous baroque Saint Stephen’s Cathedral. If the timing is right, you could catch a concert for an unforgettable experience.

Modern pleasures in Passau include the Klostergarten, a contemporary park that is home to farmers markets and gardens. It lights up at night with dramatic lighting, water features, and choreographed fountain displays, perfect for enjoying on an evening stroll.

Melk, Austria

As the Romantic Danube cruise moves into Austria, you’ll spot the Melk Abbey standing grandly atop a hill overlooking the Danube. More than just an abbey, it’s a complex comprising seven courtyards, a beautiful church, and a library with over 90,000 volumes and rare manuscripts.

Melk is located in the Wachau Valley , where small towns and monasteries flourished during the Renaissance. The scenery is stunning. Several castles — including Schloss Schallaburg , Schloss Artstetten , and Schloss Schonbuhel — beg to be explored, and the ruins of other castles dot the landscape.

If you’re interested in local food and beverages like we are, the Wachau Valley is renowned for its apricots and wine. In addition to excellent wines made from grapes such as riesling and gruner veltliner, apricot wine, apricot dumplings, apricot cake, and some unique items made with saffron are also local specialties.

Krems is the town at the other end of the valley and is sometimes part of the Romantic Danube itinerary.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. There are so many things to see, do, and eat that you will not want to waste a moment of your time there.

We have to put the Viennese culinary culture at the top of our list. Famous desserts like sacher torte and apple strudel, gorgeous coffeehouses, incredible farmers markets, delicious street food, and a wide range of restaurants provide many opportunities to sample local delights. Most people don’t know that Vienna is also home to its own wine regions, making the local wine a great option to try.

Music is another highlight of Viennese culture. The City of Music has many venues from which to choose. The Musikverein , Vienna State Opera , Wiener Konzerthaus , and Schonbrunn Palace offer concerts featuring everything from the classical music of Mozart and Strauss to jazz, pop, and rock. There are also cafés, bars, and nightclubs offering food, drinks, and music in a more intimate setting.

World-renowned palaces like Schonbrunn and the Hofburg as well as sacred spaces like Saint Stephen’s Cathedral and Karlskirche impress with their magnificence.

Of course, Vienna also offers gorgeous Christmas markets in stunning venues like the City Hall, Belvedere Palace, Maria Theresien Square, and Schonbrunn Palace, among others.

Animal lovers can check out the elegant Lipizzaner stallions performing at the Spanish Riding School or visit Vienna’s Tiergarten , the oldest zoo in the world.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is actually three different cities: Buda and Obuda on the west side of the Danube  River and Pest on the east side. That only adds to the intrigue of this unique destination.

The quieter Buda side has hills and a funicular, which you can ride to the top for a panoramic view of the Pest side. The City Park is a lovely place to stroll, with botanical gardens, a municipal zoo, the Budapest circus, and a museum of agriculture. There’s also a huge timer containing sand that takes a year to go from the top to the bottom. It’s started all over again every New Year.

The Great Market Hall features three floors of local produce, prepared delicacies, crafts, and souvenirs. If you like to shop, be sure to stroll along Vaci and Kiraly Streets, pedestrian roads full of touristy joints as well as fun local shops and cafés.

Budapest has several spas and thermal baths in which you can relax while also getting your history fix; many of these structures have been around since Ottoman times.

Budapest also boasts several phenomenal holiday markets, including the Advent Feast at the Basilica , considered among the best Christmas markets in Europe.

The folks at Viking River Cruises know that the spectacular Hungarian Parliament Building is a vision at night. They generally provide an opportunity to see it while you’re on the water and make a picture-perfect memory to last a lifetime.

What To Know Before You Go

Viking River Cruises offers several excursions as well as a variety of add-ons. Be sure to take time before your departure to explore what interests you and book anything extra well in advance because space is often limited. While the ship is comfy, the service delightful, and the onboard activities lots of fun, be sure to get out and explore at every stop. There is so much awaiting you on your Romantic Danube journey.
