PUBLISHERS WEEKLY DEC 24, 2012

In Collins's latest, five couples are invited aboard Russian billionaire Aleksandr Kasianenko's yacht to celebrate the birthday of his supermodel girlfriend, Bianca. During the week away from it all, Taye Sherwin, a famous, black British footballer and his wife, Ashley, a blonde with paid-for breasts, rekindle their stalled sex life; Sierra, the self-medicated wife of a sleazy U.S. Senator Hammond Patterson Jr., asserts herself against her mercurial beast of a husband; Sierra's former lover Flynn, a renegade journalist, and his stalwart colleague Xuan, "beautiful, strong-minded, and conveniently more into women than men," don't quite fit in; sweet Latin pop sensation Luca Perez learns that his lover, Jeremy, arrogant and money hungry, wants to role-play his fetishes outside their bedroom; and movie star Cliff Baxter begins to think that Lori, his girlfriend-of-the-moment, may be a keeper. After the guests spend days lounging and dining in luxury on the Sea of Cortez, the ship is stormed by pirates, leading to a fantastical denouement. Climbing aboard with this sea of extravagant creatures, whose sexual tastes lie on the fringe of raunchy, is abashedly rousing, and what more could one hope for from Collins?

Thank You Ms. Collins!!

I read this book in a day; I couldn't put it down! It's a thrilling look into the world of the rich and famous; a much needed diversion. I haven't read a JC book in a few years, and I am so glad that I did. Ms. Collins' style never gets old; it's great and I love it! Looking forward to the sequel!!

Loved this book!

I read a lot of books and this is the first book in a long time that I really couldn't put down. I thought it was even better than Gone Girl, which was a very good book. This is a great vacation read - unless you happen to be on a yacht.

Review: ‘Power Trip’ Ably Guides Us Through the History of Energy

the power trip book

By Jonathan A. Knee

  • May 17, 2019

Get the DealBook newsletter to make sense of major business and policy headlines — and the power-brokers who shape them. __________

The classic definition of energy, Michael E. Webber tells us in his illuminating book, “Power Trip: The Story of Energy,” is “the capacity to do work.” As such, energy is “the builder of civilization,” and the history of the world can be seen as a history of our collective relationship to energy.

And yet, as an unseen force, energy remains poorly understood. Indeed, the Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman famously lamented about a half century ago that “in physics today, we have no knowledge of what energy is.” Professor Webber seeks to shed light on this simultaneously ubiquitous and mysterious phenomenon. “Power Trip” offers intertwined essays that chart the history of six key uses of energy — water, food, transportation, wealth, cities and security — and, importantly, quantifies the trade-offs inherent in every significant innovation along the way.

Food production, for instance, was revolutionized in the second half of the 20th century. The introduction of synthetic fertilizers and various chemicals increased crop productivity and reduced losses, but those innovations came with an environmental cost. The parallel shift from labor-intensive to energy-intensive farming also drove huge social changes; less than 20 percent of the population remains in rural areas.

“Power Trip” also reminds us of both the importance of long discarded forms of energy and the social consequences of various advances. How many of us know that wars were once fought over access to salt, a primary means of food preservation long before the availability of refrigeration? And few probably appreciate the role of the Franklin stove in reducing female fatalities from burns (the second leading cause of death among women in colonial times) and indoor pollution. Nor are most of us aware, even today, that indoor air pollution caused by the use of solid fuels in simple cookstoves in many parts of the world is responsible for 2.5 million premature deaths of women and children each year.

The central trade-off that animates “Power Trip,” however, is between the existential imperative of global decarbonization to staunch our march toward self-destruction and the moral imperative of increasing energy access to the “more than one billion people without access to electricity, piped water or sanitation.” Notably, the efficiency improvements in the United States, combined with the slowing of growth in energy consumption, has actually resulted in a reduction in our emissions domestically. The problem, of course, is that to achieve a reduction in overall global emissions while improving basic access to water and power will require significantly more aggressive efforts.

On the questions of what to do and where we are going, “Power Trip” does not provide much of a road map. Professor Webber crams a head-spinning number of lists and imperatives into a 10-page epilogue on “the future of energy.” We are directed to consider “six demographic trends, three technological trends and one overarching environmental trend” and told that, while “there are no universal, immediate solutions,” there are a variety of principles we would do well to follow. Long-term, global thinking is good, old clichés and false choices are bad. Hard to argue with that, but the complex underlying policy issues raised could have used a less perfunctory treatment.

“Ultimately,” Professor Webber argues, “we need some combination of new production, increased energy access, smarter solutions and a cultural emphasis on efficiency and conservation.” This exhortation may just seem like an anodyne slogan but, coming at the end of the book’s careful historical survey, it reflects something much more profound. Effectively addressing our energy challenges will require us to simultaneously confront large political, technological and social obstacles. In short, it is precisely the kind of complex policy problem the current polarized era feels structurally incapable of intelligently addressing.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning after trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.

Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.

Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.

Maj. Jason Logsdon of the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections told ESPN that Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET Friday without bail. He arrived at Valhalla less than an hour before he was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET.

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers," Scheffler said in a statement. "It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

"Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.

At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.

After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.

Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"

According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.

"You need to get out of the way," the officer told Darlington. "Right now, he's going to jail, and there's nothing you can do about it."

The officer -- Det. Bryan Gillis, identified as Det. Gillis in the arrest report -- was dragged "to the ground" and suffered "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist" after the car "accelerated forward," according to the police report.

The officer was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler's car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Scheffler's attorney, Steven Romines, told ESPN that the golfer attempted to enter Valhalla Golf Club as he had been instructed to earlier, unaware there had been a fatal wreck just up the road.

"He was going into Valhalla to work out," Romines said. "He was getting ready for his tee time. They were directing traffic. He held his credential out and was going in like they'd been instructed to. Apparently, there had been a traffic accident, maybe even a fatality, down the road, and that had changed the traffic patterns, and he was unaware of that."

Romines, speaking outside the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, said the officer who attempted to stop Scheffler wasn't part of the regular event-traffic detail at Valhalla Golf Club, "so that's where the miscommunication arose."

"They are allowed to go through, that's why they have the credential and the wave-through," Romines said. "[Scheffler] was unaware there had been a wreck, and he proceeded like they'd been instructed to. He did exactly as he was instructed to enter the premises."

Romines said Scheffler would cooperate fully with police and "we'll deal with it as it progresses."

Scheffler, 27, has won four of his past five starts, including his second major championship at the Masters in April.

The start of the second round was delayed after a shuttle bus struck and killed a pedestrian outside Valhalla Golf Club, a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department confirmed to ESPN.

The unidentified man was attempting to cross Shelbyville Road when he was struck in a dedicated lane for buses. Police said the man died at the scene.

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club," the PGA of America said in a statement. "This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Several police and first responders were still at the scene at 6:45 a.m. ET. Traffic had backed up on the roadway in dark and wet conditions, and shuttle buses bringing fans to the golf course had been stopped.

The second round had been scheduled to start at 7:15 a.m. ET.

The prime minister has called a general election for 4 July. It means parliament only has a few days to pass any bills still waiting to become law before MPs leave Westminster to begin campaigning.

On the Sky News Daily , Niall Paterson gets the very latest from our deputy political editor Sam Coates and political correspondent Tamara Cohen on why the election was announced today, and what the next six weeks of campaigning could have in store.

There is always a danger that elections in the UK become too Westminster-focused.

But in the devolved nations, there are critical votes to be won - and politicians facing their own issues.

Here is what is happening in Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland - and what it could mean on 4 July:

Rishi Sunak has called a general election for this summer.

The prime minister has been saying for months he would call a vote for the "second half of the year", and he has now confirmed it will be on 4 July.

Under the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022, Mr Sunak had until 17 December this year to call an election - as votes must be held no more than five years apart.

Our political reporter Alix Culbertson explains what happens now:

In 1997, Labour told us "Things Can Only Get Better", before Tony Blair won a landslide general election victory.

This year, Rishi Sunak appears to have concluded that things are not going to get any better for the Tories if he delays an election until the autumn.

His dash to the polls on 4 July suggests that a prime minister with a reputation for caution and an obsession with spreadsheets is actually a gambler.

To call a general election with his party consistently trailing Labour by 20 points in the Sky News poll of polls at best looks courageous, at worst reckless.

If he can pull it off, however, he will have achieved the Tories' greatest election win against the odds since John Major won a 21-seat majority in 1992.

Read Jon's full analysis below:

In January 2023, Rishi Sunak made five promises.

Since then, he and his ministers have rarely missed an opportunity to list them. In case you haven't heard, he promised to:

  • Halve inflation
  • Grow the economy
  • Reduce debt
  • Cut NHS waiting lists and times
  • Stop the boats

Now that the general election campaign is under way, see below how he has performed on these goals:

Rishi Sunak has made the calculation that 4 July is, if not the best election date for the Conservatives, then the least worst.

Firstly, he thinks there is a story to tell on the economy - albeit one that is not without peril.

Britain is out of recession, while inflation today is statistically within "normal" levels.

One Tory source told me that the moment they saw that, they knew there wouldn't be further tax cuts and an election would be sooner rather than later.

But more than that, there was a real - perhaps existential - question about how long Sunak could continue to hold it together.

There are revolts in parliament looming - on abortion, on smoking and on shorter prison sentencing. This potentially avoids some of those.

He was also facing questions whether he would have to do a reshuffle after Chris Heaton Harris, Northern Ireland Secretary, announced his departure at the next election. Precedent that should have prompted a reshuffle - perhaps this has avoided that.

There are also claims - that might never be proved one way or another - that more and more Tories wanted him gone and he could have been tiptoeing closer to a vote of no confidence. Only Sir Graham Brady may know the truth of this.

All of that is now in the past. Sunak has gambled, knowing success under any definition is hard.

With the general election campaign officially under way, what better time to keep a close eye on the latest polling?

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.

See the latest update below - and you can read more about the methodology behind the tracker  here .

The big question when Rishi Sunak walked out onto Downing Street to call an election was - why now?

What convinced the Tory leader who is 20 points behind in the polls that now was the best moment to ask voters to give their verdict.

Our economics and data editor Ed Conway  looks at the economic angle, and some charts that could be key as the campaign unfolds:

By Michael Thrasher, Sky News elections analyst

The prime minister has surprised many, including within his own party, with his decision to hold a general election on 4 July. There are few, if any indications, that he will lead his party to re-election.

His gamble must surely be that during the coming weeks, when the electorate is forced to choose between himself or Sir Keir Starmer, that enough will side with the devil you know rather than plump for change.

We don't know what finally persuaded him to go now rather than wait for the autumn.

But it is significant that his article in The Times after the local elections he cited the Sky News projection of a House of Commons that pointed towards a hung parliament.

The estimate put the Conservatives on 26% with Labour nine points ahead on 35%, a much lower level of support than shown in national opinion polls.

Naturally, the prime minister chose to be as optimistic about this projection as he possibly could be. He ignored the fact that the Conservatives were on course to lose 130 parliamentary seats after posting one of its worst ever local election performances.

By Laura Bundock , royal correspondent

This is the first time the King has been formally asked to dissolve parliament.

In fact, it’s the first time since 2010 this request had to be officially made, after the repeal of the Fixed-Term Parliament Act.

The prime minister made the legal request in person, during a 15-minute audience with the King at Buckingham Palace before dashing back to Downing Street.

So quick and discreet was the meeting, no one spotted the PM arriving or leaving.

The King must sit above politics, but this announcement has meddled with the monarch's diary.

At short notice, engagements are being cancelled which might "divert attention or distract from the election campaign".

We understand his whole schedule, which only recently restarted after his cancer diagnosis, is now being assessed and reviewed, although plans to attend D-Day commemorations are going ahead.

The King's constitutional role might seem ceremonial, but today is a reminder the Crown remains an integral part of parliament.

Only the King can appoint prime ministers, only the King approves bills, and only the King can dissolve parliament.

Fifteen different PMs served under the late Queen, and her long reign saw 18 general elections.

The King has already had two prime ministers. At the end of this election campaign he will either reappoint Rishi Sunak, or formally invite a new incumbent to form a government.
