Walk Into Barbie's World With This New Immersive Attraction Coming to Cities Across the U.S. This Summer

Barbie fans can hang out in Barbie’s Malibu Dreamhouse, her camper van, and more with this new interactive attraction.

Barbie fans across the United States and Canada can be a Barbie girl in a Barbie world when they step into a new immersive attraction starting this summer, organizers shared with Travel + Leisure .

The World of Barbie attraction , which will first launch in Toronto , will allow Barbie fans to walk right into the iconic Malibu Dreamhouse — complete with a pink carpet, a terrazzo-inspired fireplace, and a giant outdoor boombox — as well as hang out in a life-sized Camper Van and visit several other interactive rooms in Barbie's neighborhood.

"With this exquisitely designed attraction we were intentional about delivering an exciting experience that would leave younger fans with the sense that they could do anything or be anything," Julie Freeland, the senior director of location-based entertainment at Mattel, said in a statement provided to T+L. "And, for those who grew up with Barbie, we wanted to spark a little bit of nostalgia, give these fans a chance to step back, re-invent themselves, if only for an afternoon, and spend a day in the Dream Life!"

After leaving Toronto, the World Of Barbie will head to several cities across the U.S. like New York , Chicago , Houston , and Los Angeles , according to entertainment company Kilburn Live, which is partnering with Mattel, Inc. to bring the attraction to life.

Visitors will also be able to imagine what it's like to be Barbie thanks to six oversized iconic Barbie boxes (after all, life in plastic, it's fantastic). The boxes include a travel theme with binoculars, a compass, and a map of the world; as well as a red carpet theme with Oscar award cutouts, a fabulous gown, and a velvet rope.

And for those who hate being grounded, Barbie's space shuttle is ready to bring travelers up, up and away where they can "interact" with mission control, track objects on radar, and even listen to the sounds of space.

In addition to the endless Instagram opportunities, the attraction will feature a Barbie café where visitors will be able to grab a bite to eat.

"Barbie is as relevant today as she was when she was first introduced to the world 63 years ago, if not more," Kilburn CEO Mark Manuel said in the statement. "I watched my daughter live and play in her world, I believe it helped shape her sharp and lively imagination, just like it has for millions of other children growing up. So there were a lot of reasons we needed to get this right."

Tickets for the Toronto attraction go on sale online on May 21.

Barbie Forteza's unforgettable moments in Canada

Sparkle's first-ever concert tour in Canada may be a business trip, but Barbie Forteza saw it as a good mix of work and play.

It was an eight-day trip from April 2 to 10, 2024, with two shows held at the Southview Alliance Church in Calgary on April 5, and at the Toronto Pavilion in Toronto on April 7.

Directed by Johnny Manahan, aka Mr. M , the Canada Goes To Sparkle concert tour was headlined by Barbie, David Licauco , Ruru Madrid, Bianca Umali , Rayver Cruz, and Julie Anne Jose .

"Na-maximize namin kahit papa'no," said Barbie, whose face lit up when PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked what she enjoyed the most in Canada.

PEP.ph interviewed her on the sidelines of the media launch of Zaffiro, the newest beauty treatment from Avignon Clinic, which Barbie is endorsing.

The event was held at Manila House Manila in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, last Monday, April 22, 2024.

BARBIE FORTEZA'S UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS

She then enumerated the four highlights of her workcation in Canada.

1. stronger friendships

Barbie said she and fellow Kapuso star Bianca Umali grew closer after spending time together on and off cam.

They instantly connected because of their shared love for coffee as well as the popular '90s American sitcom FRIENDS.

Describing their newfound closeness, Barbie exclaimed, "Sobra! Ngayon nga magka-message kami."

Barbie went on to say that she also had a lot of bonding moments with Ruru, Julie Anne, Rayver, and David.

"Our friendship grew stronger when we got to work together abroad.

"Kasi wala kang katulong, e. As in kaming girls, sariling sikap, hair and makeup, wardrobe outfits, ganyan.

"Iba yung naging bond namin and friendship and trust namin sa isa't isa.

"I can't wait na malibot ang buong mundo kasama ang Sparkle's best."

2. COFFEE HUNTING

Another highlight for Barbie were here coffee hunting jaunts with the gang.

In an Instagram post, Barbie showed that she hung out with the whole group in Kensington, Calgary.

She also didn't mind thirdwheeling with reel-and-real-life couple Bianca and Ruru in a coffee shop that they went to in downtown Toronto.

One cafe they discovered has a relaxing backyard sitting area.

In her interview with PEP.ph, Barbie said she and Bianca are already planning to replicate the same experience here in Manila.

"Kapag wala kaming trabaho, gagawin namin yung ginawa namin dun na naghahanap kami ng hole-in-the-wall coffee shops.

"And alam ko may gusto siya pagdalhan sa akin na brunch place sa Marikina yata yun. Gusto namin i-schedule yun."

3. winter wonderland in canada

Barbie also made the most out of her winter experience in Calgary.

She visited the famous Banff National Park where she enjoyed wandering around the bridge overlooking the snowy mountain peaks and glacial lakes.

4. BUYING PASALUBONG

Even as she enjoyed her time in Canada, Barbie did not forget to purchase pasalubong for her family back home.

Asked what she bought for them, she replied, "Mga chocolates po. 'Tsaka mga maple cookies, maple cream cookies for my family."

PAMPER TIME IN MANILA

When she arrived back in Manila, Barbie beat her jet lag with Zaffiro as her pamper treatment in Avignon.

Powered by Neavia, Barbie says Zaffiro is a painless beauty treatment that addresses hydrates, tightens, and lifts the skin with no downtime.

It can be customized according to the patient's needs: boost hylaluronic acid for anti-aging, reduce acne scars, and skin brightening, among others.

Talking about her experience with Zaffiro as a facial treatment, Barbie explained: "Sobrang lala ng jet lag ko. Naisip ko pumunta ng Avignon sa BGC. Susuungin ko yung traffic ng BGC kasi dun lang may Avignon. Kasi Avignon pa lang ang first-ever clinic na merong Zaffiro."

"Nung na-try ko siya, yung hydro exfoliation, sobrang refreshing. Di mo mararamdaman, pero makikita mo after yung result.

"Kasi nakaka-dry [ng skin] sa Canada, e. Napansin ko yung pag-improve ng texture."

She added that the treatment also gave her an instant facial lift.

"Saka yung thermo lifting, ang gustung-gusto ko painless siya kasi medyo mababa po ang pain tolerance ko.

"Totoo po siya, dahil nanggaling ka sa hydro exfoliation, malamig pa yung face mo, so kapag ginawa yung thermo lifting yung second step, kahit mainit yung effect niya, di mo gaano mararamdaman, pero instant ang effect.

"Pati skin lightening [effect] niya talaga pong maganda."

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Live-Action Movie: What We Know So Far

Revealed Robbie in a cover story with British Vogue , “Right, it comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.” Here's what we know about the doll drama so far.

When will the film release?

Barbie hits theaters on July 21, 2023. Warner Bros. announced the news with a first look at Robbie in character, covered in pink.

The Warner Bros. project was first announced in 2019, but numerous other projects—and, not to mention, a pandemic—have kept Gerwig and Robbie busy in the interim. Variety confirms that Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach would finalize the script after completing work on the Baumbach-directed 2022 film White Noise .

Who's playing Ken?

It was announced on October 22, 2021, that Ryan Gosling was in final negotiations for the role of Ken, the well-known romantic interest of Barbie and a wonderful choice for a leading man to star opposite Robbie. Apparently, Gosling initially rejected the role, saying he was too busy, but the delay in production lined it up with a free spot in his calendar. The news came after Gosling wrapped on the Russo brothers' Netflix film The Gray Man , acting alongside Chris Evans.

On June 15, 2022, Warner Bros. Pictures released a jaw-dropping first-look image of Gosling in the infamous role—with bleached blonde hair, a denim vest and a spray tan, no less. However, Gosling is not the only one playing Ken.

Who else is in the cast?

Barbie is a massive star-studded production featuring multiple Barbies, Kens, and humans. After long keeping character details close to the vest, the film shared its full roster on social media.

The doll cast includes: Robbie, Hari Nef ( Transparent ) as a doctor Barbie, Emma Mackey ( Sex Education ) as a Barbie with a Nobel Prize in physics, Dua Lipa as a mermaid Barbie, Ana Cruz Kayne ( Painkiller ) as a Supreme Court Justice Barbie, Sharon Rooney ( My Mad Fat Diary ) as a lawyer Barbie, Emerald Fennell ( The Crown ) as Midge, Issa Rae as a president Barbie, Kate McKinnon ( Saturday Night Live ) as the Barbie who’s “always in the splits,” Nicola Coughlan ( Bridgerton ) as a diplomat Barbie, Alexandra Shipp ( Tick, Tick...Boom! ) as an author Barbie, and Ritu Arya ( The Umbrella Academy ) as a Barbie with a Pulitzer.

The various Kens are portrayed by: Gosling, Kinglsey Ben-Adir ( One Night in Miami ), Scott Evans ( Grace and Frankie ), Simu Liu ( Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ), and Ncuti Gatwa ( Sex Education ). And there's Michael Cera as Allan.

The human cast includes: America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt (young Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War ), Connor Swindells ( Sex Education ), Jamie Demetriou ( Fleabag , The Afterparty ), and Will Ferrell, who’s said to be playing the CEO of a toy company. Let's also not forget Dame Helen Mirren, who's taken the honorable role of narrator.

Other previous reports stated that Marisa Abela ( Industry ) and Rhea Perlman ( Cheers ) are also in the cast. Further details about the roles remain tightly under wraps.

What will the story be about?

Gerwig will pen the script with Marriage Story 's Baumbach, which means this won't be your typical toy-to-television adaptation.

“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t...,” Robbie told British Vogue .

After months—or honestly, years—of keeping mum, Robbie opened up slightly about the film's premise to Vogue . She said that when her production team pitched the idea to Mattell, they told the company, “We of course would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has. But we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie. And in fact, aren’t just indifferent to Barbie. They actively hate Barbie. And have a real issue with Barbie. We need to find a way to acknowledge that.”

To help Robbie get into character, Gerwig recommended listening to an episode of the podcast This American Life where a woman doesn't introspect. “You know how you have a voice in your head all the time?” Robbie told Vogue . “This woman, she doesn’t have that voice in her head.”

Vogue reports that the Barbie storyline is somewhat inspired by the 1994 book Reviving Ophelia , which Gerwig read as a kid, that details problems girls face when they enter adolescence. “They’re funny and brash and confident, and then they just—stop,” the director told the magazine. While writing the screenplay, she realized that the film would ultimately cover: “How is this journey the same thing that a teenage girl feels? All of a sudden, she thinks, Oh, I’m not good enough .”

Robbie trusted Gerwig, but she had a simple request before singing on. “I’ll follow your vision. Whatever you want this Barbie movie to be, let’s do that. Except I just have one favor,” she recalled telling the director on The Kelly Clarkson Show . “Please, please, please can we have a Dreamhouse where she has a slide that goes from her bedroom down to her pool, because that is my goal in life.” We get it.

Is production for Barbie over?

On July 16, 2022, a few members of the Barbie cast shared a celebratory photo to commemorate wrapping on the film. Both actresses Hari Nef and Sharon Rooney posted the picture to Instagram. The image included Gerwig as well as Robbie and America Ferrera from their last day on set, all yelling at the camera.

Also in the pic were Alexandra Shipp and Ana Cruz Kayne, plus a few other members of the studio ensemble.

“Barbie, a true gift,” Rooney wrote in the caption.

Greenblatt told ELLE of filming Barbie , “Everyone had such a great time making it, and it really shows on camera.” She added that while filming in London, Robbie and Gerwig arranged for the cast to screen films relating to Barbie every Sunday at Electric Cinema in Notting Hill.

What has Greta Gerwig said about the experience?

Gerwig co-wrote the screenplay as well as directing. In an appearance on Dua Lipa's At Your Service podcast post-production, Gerwig said it was actually a nerve-wracking choice to take on the Barbie project.

“It was terrifying. I think there's something about starting from that place where it's like, ‘Well, anything is possible!’” she said. “It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?”

She continued, “I think it was that feeling I had that it would be really interesting terror. Usually, that's where the best stuff is. When you're like, ‘I am terrified of that.’ Anything where you're like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you're like, ‘OK, I probably should do it.’”

The experience ended up being great, even working with the executives at Mattel, who have creative control over the doll fashion line.

“They have given us such trust and such freedom, and I think that is incredibly rare. Whatever we wanted to be, they did not try to micromanage it. I was very much supported in what I wanted to do,” Gerwig explained. “I usually know on a gut level whether something feels right.”

In July, she told Rolling Stone that Mattel was “incredibly open” to feminist critique because “it’s a lie any other way.”

“It felt like we had to give the counterargument to Barbie, and not give it short shrift, but give it real intellectual and emotional power,” she said. “And Mattel was incredibly open to it. I said, ‘We have to explore it, because it’s a lie any other way. And we can’t make it a lie.’ I think they heard it.”

Is there a trailer?

Finally, yes. Warner Bros. shared the first teaser for Barbie on December 16, featuring Robbie's arrival as the iconic doll. It's also a big visual and musical reference to the opening scenes of 2001 A Space Odyssey . “Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been...dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. Until...” a voiceover says in the clip.

The footage ends with some blink-and-you'll-miss it glimpses of the over-the-top film, including cast members Ryan Gosling, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae, and Simu Liu.

Another teaser followed on April 4, showing a bigger, colorful look inside Barbie Land and its multiple Barbies (including Robbie, Rae, Shipp, and Mackey) and Kens (like Gosling, Liu, and Ben-Adir). Michael Cera's Allan makes an appearance too. The eye-popping preview ends with Barbie driving towards the “real world” in her bubblegum pink convertible, only to find Gosling’s Ken has stowed away in the back seat, along with his neon roller blades. The main trailer, released on May 25, shows more of Barbie's excursion into the real world. All is going well in Barbie Land when she starts noticing that things are going awry: she falls off of her building and (gasp!) the eternal tip-toe-arches of her feet have gone flat, so she can no longer wear heels. Kate McKinnon's Barbie suggestions she goes into the Real World to find out what's going on. Once Robbie's Barbie arrives to her destination (with Gosling's Ken in tow), shenanigans ensue. Watch below. The trailer teases a new song by Dua Lipa, too.

And then in early July, a clip from the film was released that focused on Gosling's Ken recovering from a brief injury after trying to surf, even though his job is “beach.”

Barbie suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence.

Will There Be a 'Barbie' Sequel?

Before we get too into what could potentially be explored in a Weird Barbie movie, it must be stated that Barbie doesn't need a sequel or spin-off film at all. Greta Gerwig crafted a complete, powerful narrative that did what it could to unpack and explore the complexities of womanhood, and the Dream House should not reopen its doors without a good reason. There are currently no concrete plans to make a Barbie sequel, though Gerwig told Variety that if she feels that there is another rich story — or what Gerwig refers to as an "undertow" — to be explored in Barbieland, she's open to going back.

However, from Hot Wheels , to American Girl Dolls , to Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots (...seriously?), it appears that Mattel is willing to greenlight pretty much anything. And should Barbie once again find itself the darling of the summer box office, we have to admit that Weird Barbie might be the richest well of inspiration for a sequel.

Who Does Kate McKinnon Play in ‘Barbie’?

In Barbie , the dolls live in an idyllic, sun-soaked matriarchal society where days are spent wearing fabulous outfits, lounging at the beach, and performing elaborate bespoke dance numbers with a hundred of their closest friends. Everything is apparently perfect until one day, Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) is suddenly stricken with flat feet, cellulite, and looming thoughts of death. Her friends are horrified and insist that she seek out the help of Weird Barbie , who lives as an outcast in her own Weird House far away from the Barbie Dream Houses. Having been ostracized after being played with too aggressively, Weird Barbie lives alone with her dog, offered occasional company from other rejected Barbies and Kens , or Barbies who need help when they malfunction.

Weird Barbie Is One of the Best Characters in Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie'

One of the best things about this Barbie character is that, for pretty much anybody who grew up playing with dolls, Weird Barbie is a universal experience. Whether you were lining her eyes with a thick, black pen, or cutting unruly bangs with a pair of rusty, blunt kid scissors, there was always at least one doll in the toychest who didn't escape childhood unscathed. That's what makes Kate McKinnon's Barbie character so great — we know who she is right away. While McKinnon brings her unique humor to the role and makes the character a delightfully sardonic oracle who hangs in the rafters and makes killer dioramas, we recognize Weird Barbie for what she is immediately, and that's what makes her so funny.

Furthermore, Weird Barbie offers so much more than just comic relief. Although she seems pretty content hanging out in her Weird House with Growing Up Skipper and the rest of the misfit toys , she also has no choice but to make do as an outcast because the other Barbies rejected her. They even laugh whilst discussing how Weird Barbie helps others stay perfect while falling further into a state of disrepair herself. Kate McKinnon's character reminds us that even in the supposed utopia of Barbieland, all issues of feminism are not, in fact, solved. As Margot Robbie's Barbie says after her breakdown, either you're brainwashed, or you're ugly and weird. Given that Weird Barbie no longer fits into Barbieland's standards, she's tossed aside.

This Was the Most Powerful Moment in 'Barbie'

Of course, at the end of the movie, Issa Rae's President Barbie apologizes to Weird Barbie for how she's been treated in the past, and offers her a position in government (a major win for the Department of Sanitation), showing the value of fostering different perspectives in positions of power. This moment acknowledges that the "perfect" society in which the Barbies were previously existing was actually far from it. Nevertheless, we can't forget that even in a fantastical world run entirely by women, the constraints of societal expectations are inescapable, and Weird Barbie suffers for it.

Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie Probably Belonged to America Ferrera's Gloria

While it’s not explicitly stated in the movie, it’s implied that America Ferrera's Gloria is the one who made Weird Barbie, well, weird. When Lawyer Barbie ( Sharon Rooney ) is telling Stereotypical Barbie where Weird Barbie came from, she informs us that Weird Barbie used to be the most beautiful Barbie before somebody "played with her too hard," aka contorted her into a pretzel and aggressively decorated her with various craft supplies. A victim of magic marker vandalism and a very aggressive haircut, Weird Barbie has been drop-kicked, Sharpied, and burned with a barbecue lighter, leaving her seemingly forgotten in the real world.

In the montage where the young girl ( Isabella Nightingale Mercado ) is defacing her doll, the name Gloria is spelled out in Scrabble tiles on a play structure in her room. Furthermore, when Gloria explains to her daughter, Sasha ( Ariana Greenblatt ), how Weird Barbies came to be, Weird Barbie gives Gloria a thumbs up, telling her “It’s cool,” and seemingly forgiving her for the various abuses.

If a 'Barbie' Sequel Happens, It Should Be About Weird Barbie

Weird Barbie's relationship not only with the other Barbies but with Gloria leaves the door wide open for potential Barbie sequels, or even prequels. As narrator Helen Mirren quipped in Barbie , if the filmmakers want to make the point that meeting societal expectations of femininity is nearly impossible, Stereotypical Barbie, while fantastic, is not the most interesting lens through which to explore these injustices. Weird Barbie, on the other hand, is immune to the Kens' brainwashing because she was never desired by them in the first place. She possesses a perspective that nobody else in Barbieland can understand, as she's on the outside looking into the windows of the Dream House, but never invited in. Near the end of Barbie , we can even see that Weird Barbie has a new, more tamed haircut and has lost her face paint, perhaps signaling that the criticisms of her unique appearance affected her more than she ever let on.

Hari Nef Is Just Another Barbie and That's Important

Through her various, ever-impressive performances, we also know that Kate McKinnon can handle weighty topics as artfully as she can comedic ones, so, like Barbie , we know that a movie centered on Weird Barbie could have similar potential to balance humor and sincerity. The character has also proven to be of particular interest to Mattel , given that they've released a real-life doll version of Weird Barbie alongside their Barbies and Kens (which kind of goes against the whole idea of Weird Barbie, but whatever).

At the end of the day, a Barbie sequel of any kind would be a gamble, given the great success of its predecessor and the incredible standard that Greta Gerwig set with the first film. However, should the creative forces behind Barbie choose to delve once more into the Mattel Cinematic Universe, we know that Weird Barbie has stories to tell, and that Kate McKinnon and Greta Gerwig have all the talent needed to tell them. Should it be about a journey to the real world to take on Mattel, her complicated past with a young Gloria, or her burgeoning career in Sanitation, Weird Barbie has earned her time in the spotlight — splits and all.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
