We normally eat at Miller and Carter just down the road from this lovely pub but when we arrived at midday we were told they were fully booked until 14:00, the place was empty??? I asked could they recommend anywhere near and they mentioned the... Travellers Rest, we were there just after midday and were quickly shown to a table right by a lovely open fire. We ordered our food and drinks , we both had the same Ribeye steaks, my son had the peppercorn sauce which he said was the best he has ever had and I had the beef dripping sauce which was fabulous. If I had one little complaint it was that my triple cooked chips were a bit hard but still edible. The service was lovely, the gentleman who showed us to the table seemed a bit of a character. The price of the meal was substantially less then we normally pay just down the road and we were both satisfied. We will be back soon. More

Thanks again for the recommendation, and have an amazing day!

Visited during our local lockdown - one way system, distancing measures and complete table service makes it safe and gives you peace of mind. Other half ordered a Ribeye steak with triple cooked chips & Beef dripping sauce which was cooked to perfection and myself... the Slow Roasted Beef Bourginon which was amazing! Every compotent was incredible. Really enjoyed our main meals and eager to return. Desserts we had were okay. Tasty but nothing special. Staff were welcoming and friendly and the decor/surroundings were warming, welcoming and attractive. Can't wait to visit again. More

Thank you so much again for your feedback! We hope you have a great day!

Visited the Travellers rest on a busy Saturday night without booking a table, managed to find a table for 2. The pub is over 200 years old, amazing character 👏 We ordered steak & chips £16 each. My partners steak was very fatty & the... steak was of normal quality. Tanya the Manageress offered a replacement but my partner declined, instead Tanya offered us desserts. We shared a Sticky Toffee pudding with custard.......out of this world ! Thank you Tanya for your excellent customer service. More

Disappointed to say the least. We've been here a few times for food and drink and it generally has been good. Came here on a quiet lunchtime and ordered 2 of the beef brisket sandwiches from the lunchtime menu. What came was literally 2 pieces... of toast, chips and gravy. You would get far more filling out of a supermarket sandwich, and that is being generous! Our waitress was nice about the situation and offered to get the manager, however it seemed he could not care less. He went to speak to the kitchen staff but did not return to update and after at least half an hour of waiting for puddings we got fed up, paid for the food/drinks we had and left. Good for drinks, not so for service or food. More

Firstly can I say that the pub has done everything it can to make you feel safe since it reopened. Hand sanitizer on way in and all tables are 2m if not more apart. The food on the other hand was a different story. We... understand that somethings may not be available at the moment but things were missing off the meals and 3 of meals requested were off the menu. My lamb kofta starter was tiny and sat on a bed of wilted rocket and had no flavour of apricot what so ever and my husbands prawn cocktail was a rip off with 6 tiny prawns plonked on top of the sauce, not worth £6.50 being charged for it. My lasagne was lovely and tasty but my dads hunters chicken schnitzel was bone dry with a tiny piece of bacon and hardly any cheese and the bbq sauce wasn't even on the meal full stop. My mother ordered a portabello mushroom which never came and then told didn't have any. Were not even offered a dessert as kitchen closed at 8 and our table wasn't booked till 7:30. I wasn't aware the kitchen closed at 8pm and might be worth telling people at the time of booking. Staff were nice but felt rushed and will not be coming back in a hurry. More

Hi, I am glad to hear that you felt safe in the pub on your visit but sorry to hear you were disappointed with the food. Our service times are slightly different in the current climate this is stated on our pages and menu links.... More

After our day out in Cardiff, our journey took us past the fabulous country pub. Haven't visited for a few years and am sorry we have waited so long. The Staff were great from the time you walk in - but mind your head on... the low beams and doorways. The weekend special menu was great - 2 or 3 courses with drinks at very reasonable prices. It's a no brainer to select this menu for the hungry traveller! Scallops & Black pudding starter, crispy pork belly with spinach/green beans and black pudding mash and a rich brandy & apple gravy. And the star of show - the sharing dessert board. A fabulous experience in a great location. And once again the staff have to have another mention. Can't wait to visit again soon! More

Keith E, we are so happy to read such a great review about The Traveller's Rest!

I am really disappointed with our visit today. Firstly we waited 50 minutes for 2 dinners and a kids meal! The kids meal was delivered 10 mins after the adults meal (which is shocking). The veg was freezing so I asked for it to be... re-heated, after its visit to the microwave it returned with several hotspots but still cold in places. The meat was extremely chewy (lamb) and my wife commented on how all the food tasted like a dirty oven ( I also waited10 mins for gravy) It was so bad we couldn't eat any of it!!!! I spoke to the manager who said he would get to the bottom of what went wrong (although he failed to ask me what was wrong). Such a shame as the building is lovely and has plenty of character. Worth a pint but don't eat at this place! More

My husband & I found ourselves with a rare child free evening so decided to come here for a meal. The food was nice & the young girls were helpful. The middle aged woman by the door is the reason we will never go here... again. She was so rude to us, very unwelcoming, I felt like I had just walked into her house & not the pub. My husband thought we would be served our dinner on the floor as she treated us like dogs. We had 1 drink with our meal which was served very quickly & was tasty & then we left, we weren't even there an hour. I spoke to a friend who had a similar experience the day prior. We are all entitled to a bad day but clearly this woman is normally like this. If you want to feel valued as a customer I would avoid this place, you get better customer service at McDonald's. More

I visited this week with my family. The service was prompt and efficient - especially with all the new safeguards in place. Our waitress Lisa made us feel very welcome and recommended a few items from the menu. Three out of four of us decided... on the steak. All three steaks were cooked to perfection. The puddings were to die for. Such a lovely evening. Great atmosphere, great food and great waitress. We shall be back very soon. More

Thank you for the kind words, we are glad that you enjoyed your visit. I'll makes sure Lisa sees this feedback and we look forward to seeing you again in the future!

Had not been here for quite some time and having enjoyed it in the past, we decided to visit this long established gastropub (although I hate the word). It is definitely more a restaurant than a pub. Have eaten here in the past and it... was fine. Sadly not in this case. Internally A modern take on a traditional pub. The doors in/out are low, caution for taller clients. But once entering, mildly concussed, it feels warm and welcoming. The staff were friendly and efficient. However at 7pm on a Friday they had one sirloin steak remaining and no pepper sauce. The other items on the menu seemed fine and the baked Camembert was very tasty. My prawn cocktail was virtually tasteless, as was my wife’s calamari. The main courses were nicely cooked and the beef jus was good and meaty. It was a “disappointing” rather than “unpleasant” experience and I felt expensive for what it was. More

We hope you are willing to give us another chance. Please reach out to us at 029 2085 9021 so we can work towards a resolution.

Greeted by a very unfriendly person who questioned whether we had actually booked a table and looked disappointed when confirmed. Shown to our table where the people alongside had waiter service but eventually we were told to order our food from the bar which was... very confusing. Our main meal finally arrived after 1hour and 10 minutes and was cold. When mentioned the food was taken back and arrived 10 minutes later still cold. Suffice to say i will not be visiting this 'restaurant' ever again. More

21xyz, we regret to hear that you had a negative experience with us, but we would appreciate the chance to turn your experience around.

Hate to say this but the food was shocking. To start, online says you can choose different meat for Sunday lunch, we was told this is only for special occasions mothers Father’s Day, which seems really odd. We opted for beef dinners and told they... had no parsnips. The meal arrived and had 2 thin portions of beef, which tasted bland, especially when it says matured for 21 days. The rest of the veg was cold. We was expected to pay £2.50 extra for mash but did have quite a few roast potatoes which were tasty albeit cold. When we wanted to order more gravy as no-one had checked our table we had an apology and given more cold gravy. To which we complained and were given 25%. Wish we had checked the reviews beforehand as we eat out a lot and even been here before and sadly we won’t be returning which is sad as the grounds and the cosy restaurant itself has a lot of potential. Think it’s fair to say when they wasn’t overly busy today at 1.30 they could have got it right. More

Covid safety - The restaurant has been really well thought out with no tables next to each other, hand sanitiser available, social distancing signs and all staff trained to make you feel safe and comfortable. There also full table service so no need to queue... at the bar. Food - It’s great and freshly cooked, we had the sea bass and fish and chips both were excellent Service - It’s quick, professional and friendly what more could you want, this place is highly recommended More

Thank you for your kind words lovely to hear you felt safe in the business. Hope to see you soon.

First meal out after lock down, anxious but needn’t had, was easy to book, and when we arrived there was a one way system to go in and to depart, was given a warm welcome, prompted to use hand santitazer, shown to our table and... explained the process. All tables are more than two metres apart, drinks are ordered with food at table. Service was prompt nothing too much trouble. Food was fast and hot. We all enjoyed our food, Lamb Duo is delicious, lamb was melt in your mouth. Didn’t have to ask for our discount, unlike some pubs, had automatically come off, booked again for next week. More

I never complain or write reviews but I was very disappointed with my visit here today! I ordered the homemade fish cakes with poached egg and asparagus. When my meal turned up it was broccoli instead of asparagus (part of the reason I ordered the... dish) and no poached egg. I told the waiter and he apologised and told me that he knew they had run out of the asparagus last week but had forgotten to tell me. He then went to the kitchen and brought out a hard boiled egg (not poached) because the kitchen had forgotten to put in on my plate. The meal sounded lovely on the menu but unfortunately did not live up to the expectation. We weren’t asked once if everything was ok with our meal! I haven’t visited for a few years and unfortunately won’t be back. The pub itself was nice that’s why I have given 2 stars and not 1. More

We would like to work towards a resolution, so if you are willing, please reach out to us at 029 2085 9021 to discuss this further.

wanted to cancel mains before they came out they said they cant i said i dont want them and im going to leave and just pay the starters and drink and they said they will call the police because they said the good was about done but still took 20 to 30mins so not only didnt they let me cancel they lied about the food being nearly done and threatened to call the police so was forced to pay the bill by your staff the old woman there then called me claiming it was theft if we didnt pay but by law if the mains havent came to the table its not theft its a civil matter i did offer to pay for the starters and drinks which was already on the table but they was trying to say the mains have to be paid which is incorrect as its not theft untill the mains come and we started to eat the mains he tried to claim i was going to walk out without paying for drinks and starters but i said ill pay them but not the mains as they havent even same out yet i was trying to expect the reason for canceling and wanted to leave due to a mental health breakdown but rude old woman staff spoke over me

Phenomenal food and service. I got the moving mountains burger and the mini chocolate brownie for desert.

Incredible food and great service. Doom Bar beer was a great compliment to the main course. Excellent coffee served with the mini desserts. Real old world pub feel too.

Great food and great service. Everyone was very friendly and I had some of the best banoffee pie I've ever had. Everyone in my party was extremely satisfied and happy with everything we had, drinks too!

Went here for dinner and had the hunters chicken. It was very good and came with steak and chips. We stayed a long time and had a lot of beer and the staff was very sweet and let us stay quite late. Thank you!

Cosy, Country pub, dog friendly, stunning food and friendly staff. Will definitely be going back again.

I have often gone to the Traveler's Rest for Sunday Lunch and I must say it is the worst time to go. it is always busy and because you can't pre-book you end up, along with other would be diners, hovering around looking to jump into someone's seat if they look like they are leaving. Quite embarrassing if they are only going to the toilet. This problem aside I've always had a good meal here. So maybe I should think about going when its less busy. It's a nice looking pub, with a thatched roof, nestled into the side of Caerphilly mountain. Watch you don't bang your head on the way in as it has a low beam warning you how low it is. The problem is I am usually too busy reading this sign and forget to duck. The inside is quite dark but adds to that quaint cosy cottage style feel and the service is good. The only thing I would add is that the manger seems to have problem smiling.

Matt B and his grandma and I rocked up at about 6:45 on Saturday and we were seated immediately. I got salmon with veggies and chips. The salmon was perfectly cooked, the chips were chunky and crisp, and the veggies were lightly sautéed. It was pieces of red pepper, yellow pepper, and aubergine. They were busy so everything seemed to take a little longer. We had brownie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Totally delicious. Gooey brownie with fudge and creamy ice cream.

Visited the Travellers Rest last week, late afternoon, hadn't been there for a year! Stains on chairs and other seating, everything looked grubby and worn out! Staff seemed as though they didn't care. We were greeted with - have you got a reservation? When we said no, gentleman said well the restaurant is fully booked so find a table over there! Really funny that we could see plenty of tables empty. Anyway we ordered just appetisers and drinks, which were ok This used to be a great pub! It's a shame it has been left to deteriorate. Really needs some TLC urgently.

More

The Bush Inn, St Hilary

Where can I find it? St Hilary, just off the A48, CF71 7DP

A beautiful old pub with a thatched roof, excellent food and lots of indoor and outdoor seating in an idyllic and tiny village in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Captain’s Wife, Sully

travellers rest restaurant cardiff

Where can I find it? Beach Rd, Swanbridge, Sully, Penarth CF64 5UG

This popular seaside pub was originally Sully House, a house owned by a captain. The Sully pub is full of local legends. The most prevailing being that when the wife of the captain owner died, her body was kept in a box that was mistaken for treasure and stolen. These days you can take a stroll along the Wales Coast Path and stop for a drink and enjoy proper pub food at this spacious and stylish pub. But make sure to bag a table in the outdoor area to watch the sun go down over Sully.

Kings Arms, Pentyrch

A roaring fireplace in the snug bar

Where can I find it? Church Rd, Pentyrch, Cardiff CF15 9QF

This award-winning countryside pub, which is tucked away in the outskirts of Cardiff, is well worth a visit. This 16th century Grade-II listed Welsh longhouse has bags of character, exposed stone walls, open fireplace, wood-burners and an original flagstone floor. The perfect place to enjoy a drink after walking up and down the nearby Garth.

The Fox, St Brides

Gavin Henson now owns the Fox pub in St Brides Major

Where can I find it? Ewenny Rd, Saint Brides Major, Bridgend CF32 0SA

Former rugby international Gavin Henson's pub in the Vale of Glamorgan opened just before lockdown after the premises were given a huge overhaul - it's so cosy and relaxed here that you instantly feel at home. And the food is incredible. Try the lobster fish finger or the Welsh beef platter. See our review of The Fox, here.

Plymouth Arms, St Fagans

The Plymouth Arms, St Fagans

Where can I find it? St Fagans, Cardiff, CF5 6DU

Only a stone throw away from the St Fagans National Museum of History, the inn takes its name from Elizabeth Lewis, who was an heiress of a major local landowner in the area and married the Third Earl of Plymouth in the early 1700s. The inn provided easy access to Cardiff and was a popular stop-off point for people travelling there in traditional cabs. Some things never change as the pub is still a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. The pub went through a refurbishment recently and offers an array of hearty pub classics.

The Traveller's Rest, Thornhill

travellers rest restaurant cardiff

Where can I find it? Thornhill, Caerphilly, CF82 1LY

Perched on Caerphilly Mountain, there are spectacular views over Cardiff at this quaint traditional pub. The local area is ideal to go for a little stroll before heading to the Traveller's Rest for a drink or a meal. This pub dates back to the 1800s and was one of only a few pubs that remained opened throughout the Second World War.

The Old Cottage, Lisvane

travellers rest restaurant cardiff

Where can I find it? Cherry Orchard Rd, Cardiff CF14 0UE

This delightful pub was revamped in 2022 and has been receiving raving reviews online ever since. Their Sunday menu, for example, offers a wide range of dishes, which includes five different roast options, burgers, steaks and fish dishes. The drinks' menu features a range of gins, wines and beer on tap. See our review of The Old Cottage, here.

The Gwaelod-y-Garth Inn, Gwaelod y Garth

Gwaelod-y-Garth Inn

Where can I find it? Main Rd, Gwaelod-y-garth, Cardiff CF15 9HH

One of the most picturesque places to go for an invigorating walk is Y Garth on the outskirts of Cardiff. It's located near the village of Pentyrch and on clear and sunny days you can enjoy views across Cardiff and the Valleys. But once you've climbed to the top and scrambled back down again, you can be sure that you've worked an appetite. Luckily, nestled at the foot of the hill is The Gwaelod-y-Garth Inn, which is a popular meeting place for walkers. The inn has several dining areas, with the bar downstairs and a dining room upstairs.

The Black Cock Inn, Caerphilly Mountain

Black Cock Inn

Where can I find it? Waunwaelod Way, Mountain, Caerphilly CF83 1BD

The popular pub is a common stop for walkers, cyclists and riders as they cross over Caerphilly Mountain. Here, at the half-way point, you can either wet your whistle or enjoy a hearty lunch (or both). According to our recent review of the pub, they serve "insanely good" chips. See our review of The Black Cock Inn, here.

Maenllwyd Inn, Rudry
