Discovery Channel Trek Equinox TTX review

The TTX is the logical evolution of the prototype time trial bike ofthe same name that Lance used in St Etienne last year on the way to hisdecisive last Tour victory.

The TTX is the logical evolution of the prototype time trial bike of the same name that Lance used in the St Etienne time trial on the way to his decisive last Tour victory. That spectacular carbon monocoque, conceived in a San Diego wind tunnel, is built in Waterloo, Wisconsin, and was ridden by big George Hincapie and his Discovery boys in the 2006 Tour TTs. What's more, you can buy one too.

As with other time trial bikes, many of the Trek's prospective buyers will be looking for a triathlon machine that can give the further forwards 'over the bottom bracket' riding position their sport prefers. Which is where the TTX shows its adaptability, with a reversible clamp seat post that caters for roadies and triathletes alike. Point it backwards, and you can have an effective seattube angle of up to 79 degrees, for TT riders looking to mimic the riding position of their road bikes. Turn it round to point forwards and you can effectively straighten the seat-tube to a more triathlete-friendly 73 degrees.

The new weight saving TTX dispenses with the honeycomb matrix of its predecessor's TTT carbon frame and uses new aero carbon 'tubing' so thin it can easily be compressed between thumb and finger. Depending on the frame size selected the head angles can vary from 72, to 75 degrees and the clever use of a forward bulging section to the leading edge of the down tube on the large size frame brings the tyre closer to the frame for better air flow without introducing an unacceptable degree of toe overlap when turning at slow speeds. The chainstays are of modest proportions when placed alongside the other bikes but the seat stays have a winged teardrop section to minimise the disturbance of air.

Wheels and equipment

Equipment is courtesy of the obligatory Dura-Ace kit and the Bontrager Aeolus carbon deep section wheels on this team bike run Hutchinson tubulars. It's safe to say this is one outrageously fast-looking bike, even standing still.

The complete bike that Trek are letting us the paying public get our hands on next year will have these rather upright Bontrager tribars (some of the Discovery bikes have a onepiece integrated aero tribar), and come in three sizes and two colour schemes of nudepearl or team baja blue (as tested). A frame only option will also be available .

If you look closely this July, you'll see the Discovery team are running a rear Bontrager disc wheel with a Bontrager 6.5 Aeolus on the front, produced in conjunction with wheel manufacturer HED Design. To dispense with the need for heavier rims and to improve vertical compliance the spokes are attached at the base of the rim rather than within the aero section, and Bontrager Race X Lite Pro tubulars are fitted.

First of all, it has to be said that this bike had been set up for someone clearly much bigger than me. As it was, it would be best suited to a rolling triathlon course as the front was too high for the tight aero tuck needed for a short TT course. But then, as the Bontrager tribars, with their attractive and aero-efficient delta-wing profile, are not integrated, the hand positions could have been lowered simply by using a stem with a steeper drop. Following the starting effort I reached forwards onto the ends of the extensions and settled my elbows onto the comfortable (although too high for me) armrests. To minimise the speed deficit of my un-aero position, I moved onto the back of the saddle for a more stretched out riding position. Once settled down in a steady rhythm, the Trek shows its true colours with a smooth ride that's easier to live with than Jan Ullrich's ruthlessly efficient Giant team TT bike over the mottled surface of my local time trial course. The lightness of the Bontrager wheels could be felt on one particular section as it was easier to hold the gear for longer than the others on its slight gradient. In fact, given their comfort too we would go as far as to say that these are the best wheels we've used for long distance time trials and probably the best wheels for any time trial discipline.

Onto the brakes to scrub speed in readiness for first left turn and Trek appear to have omitted special brake blocks on our test bike to act on the carbon rims because the brakes grab.

While the Trek has a longer trail than the Jan's [actual] Giant the jury's still out on the effect that this made on the stability of the bike as the riding position felt like it distributed my weight more centrally than the Giant.

With the approach to the only real gradient of our course, the gear levers came into play. While the bends of the tribar extensions form a natural position for the wrists, I felt that most riders would want to trim 3cm from their ends to bring the bar end shifters closer to the hands to improve gear shifting convenience. Back down into a big gear for the home straight and the frame's stiffness shines through, though we can only imagine that Lance would have enjoyed a lower riding position than that afforded by our bike as we crossed the finish line. But then it's safe to assume his bike wouldn't have been made for someone else a lot bigger...

Discovery Showrunner Explains How the Finale's Surprising Twists Fit Trek Canon

Back to the future.

Burnham finds herself among the technology that the Progenitors found in the series finale of 'Star ...

The age of Discovery has come to an end. With “Life, Itself,” the first Star Trek show of the streaming era has concluded its Season 5 storyline and wrapped up two major mysteries, one of which has been floating around since 2018. Discovery’s emotional ending likely wasn’t what fans expected, and the final coda features a leap that reveals not just the end of the starship’s voyages, but that teases a legacy for Burnham and Book that could have big implications for the Trek timeline.

To sort it all out, Inverse caught up with Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise to figure out what went into devising the series’ final moments, and how it all ties into a specific Trek mystery while also connecting to a different prequel show from almost two decades ago. Spoilers ahead.

Discovery’s original ending

Burnham, T'Rina, and Saru, in the first ending of 'Star Trek: Discovery.'

Discovery Season 5 originally ended with T’Rina and Saru’s wedding before it had to jump 30 years forward.

Discovery’s final episode seems to have two endings. After the entire Breen conflict is resolved and Burnham confers with Kovich (David Cronenberg), the episode seems to come to a serene end with Saru (Doug Jones) and T’Rina’s (Tara Rosling) beachy wedding. As guests mingle, Book (David Ajala ) shows up late and reconciles with Michael.

“That was it. It was the scene on the beach where Burnham and Book walk off and the camera sort of pans up,” Michelle Paradise tells Inverse. “That was the original ending.”

Had Season 6 been in the works, Discovery Season 5 would have ended in the present tense of the show (3191) with Saru and T’rina’s wedding. Although Discovery Season 5 wrapped production in November 2022, it wasn’t until April 2023 that a coda was developed to conclude the entire series. “We were editing episodes 8 and 9, I think, when we found out that this would be our last season,” Paradise says. “Everything starting from the pan up, that’s the new stuff.”

The flash-forward timeline

The final coda of 'Star Trek: Discovery,' Book, Burnham and their son, Leto.

Leto, Burnham, and Book, 30 years in the future.

Discovery’s real ending jumps forward several decades. Burnham and Book have distinguished streaks of gray hair, Burnham is referred to as Admiral, and they have a grown son named Leto, named after Book’s deceased brother.

“It’s 30 years later,” Michelle Paradise confirms, which means the Discovery coda takes place around 3221. This also means Discovery’s final moments are set in yet another new century. The crew initially jumped from the 23rd century to the 32nd, and now Burnham takes the USS Discovery on one last mission early in the 33rd century. In doing so, Discovery creates more future-tense Trek canon that other new Trek shows may have to deal with.

“We were nervous, but not because of [creating new canon],” Paradise says. “It was really about how we wrap up a series when we have essentially 10 to 12 pages and three days to shoot it. It was about making sure we did justice to the characters and bring emotional closure for the audience.”

The Enterprise connection

David Cronenberg as Kovich, who is really "Daniels."

David Cronenberg as Kovich, who’s revealed to be someone else entirely.

Just before the new material, Michael Burnham unravels a secret that Discovery has been keeping since Season 3. Just who is David Cronenberg’s cryptic character, Kovich ? Burnham learns that Kovich is a codename and that his real identity is Agent Daniels. Daniels mentions he served on the USS Enterprise ; for those who don’t remember, Daniels was a temporal agent from the 31st century who, in the prequel series Enterprise , often traveled back to the 22nd century to assist the crew. At the time, Daniels was trying to stop other factions from rewriting history. In the 32nd-century context of Discovery, we’ve been told that temporal accords made time travel illegal.

Paradise explains that the writers’ room had planned to reveal that Kovich was Daniels for a while. “I think it was back in Season 4 we kind of decided that was where we were going with him,” she says. “If you rewatch season five, you'll see there are tiny little Easter eggs. He's writing with a pen and paper, which is very weird for the future when they’ve all got holograms. He’s a bit out of time.”

Discovery’s final destination explained

Admiral Burnham commands the USS Discovery, one last time in the series finale of 'Star Trek: Discov...

Admiral Burnham takes the USS Discovery — and its benevolent AI, Zora — on one last ride.

Discovery’s last bit of housekeeping was reconciling a strange bit of canon introduced in the 2018 Short Treks episode “Calypso.” That short depicted the USS Discovery adrift and empty, with only a friendly, sentient AI named Zora (Annabelle Wallis) aboard. In this distant future, a human named Craft (Aldis Hodge) boards the ship and has a romance with Zora, who projects herself as a hologram.

Ever since “Calypso” aired, fans have wondered whether it took place in an alternate future, or if it would ever fit with the 32nd-century timeframe Discovery eventually arrived in. While we saw Zora’s sentience emerge after “Calypso,” the episode’s questions remained unanswered .

“I dodged those questions for years!” Paradise says. “But it felt like we needed to tie it back to ‘Calypso’ for people who had seen the short. But we also wanted to do it in such a way that if people hadn’t seen the short, they wouldn’t be like, ‘What are they talking about?’”

In the end, Discovery is sent on a top-secret “Red Directive” mission, which requires Zora to have her fateful meeting with Craft at some point in the future. Even Burnham doesn’t know why, but if Discovery doesn’t meet Craft, then something about the timeline won’t be quite right. Paradise says these scenes were created to emphasize character, rather than connecting dots for the sake of it. We see Discovery end up where it's supposed to end up, but the why had to remain a secret to preserve the moment’s emotional integrity.

“We felt it was important to answer the question — what happened to one of the main characters, the ship itself,” Paradise says. “Ultimately, any version of that where we went into plot started to take away from the emotional experience. And ultimately why they had to go out there didn't feel as important as the fact that Burnham’s going to be the one to take the ship out. One last time.”

  • USER REVIEWS

I have owned this bike for 10 years now, and put thousands of miles on it and it is still going strong! It's is ultra hardy and durable (been in a few small accidents, throw it in my car, etc.). The aluminum frame makes it very responsive to power pushes. The carbon fiber fork and seat post dampens some of the road noise and the 105 components are excellent! This bike is an incredible value and I feel like it rides just as well as bikes that are 5x its price.

The front derailleur is finicky and I have to adjust it often to be able to kick it into the highest gear. The tires that come with the bike are not good, worth an upgrade. The aluminum is nice for durability and responsiveness and for the average rider the extra weight is worth it. But for a competitive rider, they would want a lighter bike. Especially on my 63cm frame.

Ultegra Rear Derailleur is strong and smooth at shifting. The Frame is strong and lightweight. Power transfers well into each push. I've put roughly 350-380 Miles on this bike so far and I love it. It was night and day different than a cheap Amazon found road bike that I originally purchased. Like many others have said about this bike, It keeps up with the $2-3K without a problem at all. I did upgrade my saddle and tires as everyone else mentioned as well and it makes a huge difference.

The bike isn't the most comfortable at longer rides. I'm 5'11 and ride a 58CM and it always feels like my reach is a little too far extended with the seat post position. I've had to adjust my saddle forward just to feel a little less stress on my upper back/shoulders and inner elbows from extending my arms so far forward for a longer amount of time. Needless to say, 20miles or less per ride are fine but any more than that is very uncomfortable. Front Derailleur is very finicky like other reviewers mentioned.

I’ve been riding this bike for well over a decade, religiously for work and leisure and fun. I’ve been hit by many cars, I fix it every time, this bike is priceless to me. Car Window Repair

Front fork could be a little more robust. Tires puncture easily by thorns.

Fits like a glove. Very fast and stiff. You feel the power on each push transferring to the ground. Now at 2021 and after many years, I still beat lots of riders on flat or slow steep terrain. It has a 53/39 configuration that is tough on slopes. I just bought a Tiagra 11/32 cassette to add some 13% easiness on the hills we have in Chile. With that I will be faster and hope not much compact babies can pass me.

The setting of the crankset is too old and not upgradeable due to the 10s. I had to lower my cassette to tiagra. I upgrades the seat and the wheels so I am at the sweet spot. I don’t plan to change it. Aluminum kicking a lot of carbon dudes.

It looks like a classic road bike with classic race geometry. At 54cm it has perfect frame triangulation. It came with an Ultegra 6600 groupset and Ultegra brakes (but I upgraded it to 6770). It has Bontrager SSR components, seat, handlebars, forks, wheels. It has an awesome 2006 Team Discovery channel livery. The decals are actually under the clear coat and the bike looks more expensive than it is. From a distance you would mistake it for a 2007 Madone. The frame is nice and stiff but not so stiff you would knock your teeth together. It's still as good as any other mid level flat top tube road bike such a a CAAD. Its very reliable and rides fast.

Its aluminum and so you pay a weight penalty. It doesn't have the strongest components if you are a heavy rider.

The look (frame shape is almost classic), frame stiffness, Cane Creek SCR3 brakes, carbon seat post, Bontrager SSR saddle, awesome painting (Discovery Channel Team),

The rims, even if are good looking are not robust at all. The rear one was replaced due to multiple cracks around spoke holes after one year of use.

Very good acceleration, very good mid level bike because of solid 105 group, frame and accessories. Over 2000 miles on it without problems (except rear rim) but I must mention that I'm a very big rider (260 lbs). Even so the frame is calculated up to 275lbs. And that's means something!

Similar Products Used:

Cross (Cube Nature) and MTB bike (Merida Matts TFS 900).

Is this legit? The bike is a 2005 model. It has significant miles, but was well maintained and sheltered. The petals are Look-type Shimano 105. The petals show wear, but function as new. The bike has a few dings, but nothing detrimental to the expected performance. Thus the asking price of only $250. The front tire is practically new, the rear tire shows some wear, but probably good for several hundred miles. The wheels are Bontrager Select. There is one dent on the top tube, but hardly visible. No paint removed or deep scratch. You probably would not notice it unless I pointed it out.

Fit. Ultegra and 105 mix are surprisingly good quality components for an entry-level race bike.

Average weight (20 lbs). Aluminum frame makes for uncomfortable century rides. Cheap saddle and tires. Weak rims. The rear stress fractured, which is a common problem with this wheel, although was replaced under warranty at no cost to me.

Purchased the bike new in May 2007. Have since rode 10,000+ miles on it. Very comfortable (after replacing the saddle) and surprisingly fast for the weight. Overall a fantastic bike for the price. Time to upgrade so am reluctantly letting go of it.

Acceleration is great. Shifts up and down very smoothly. Maintains speed well.

Probably just me adjusting from a mountain bike to a road bike, but the handle setup is a little awkward.

First road bike purchase. Couldn't be happier. Rides very well.

Fast. Light.

Improved my 16 mile daily mountain commute by 30% over a Giant hybrid. Smooth gear transitions. Light weight for price.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Why discovery is ending with season 5 & what it means for star trek, star trek’s next series must explain discovery’s spore drive replacement.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 concludes the series with multiple endings for Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery crew.
  • There are no plans for Star Trek: Discovery season 6, but a Paramount+ streaming movie continuation is a possibility.
  • Future Star Trek projects include spinoffs from Discovery, upcoming series, and movies on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery has ended, but will the flagship Star Trek series on Paramount+ return for season 6 or a streaming movie? Star Trek: Discovery began in 2017 and helped launch the CBS All-Access streaming service, which later rebranded as Paramount+. Discovery was the first new Star Trek series in 12 years and brought the franchise into the streaming era with cinematic visuals and serialized storytelling. Discovery 's success led to multiple Star Tre k spinoffs , including Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , as well as the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and the made-for-streaming Star Trek: Section 31 movie.

Although Star Trek: Discovery season 5 wasn't produced as the final season, but after the cast and crew learned the series was ending, Paramount+ allowed them to film new scenes to wrap up Star Trek: Discovery with an epilogue to the series finale, "Life, Itself". Star Trek: Discovery season 5 turned out to be one of the show's strongest seasons, with a new, adventurous tone that delivered thrills and poignant moments. Discovery season 5 also contained multiple callbacks to past Star Trek series to better tie the 32nd century-set saga with the franchise's legacy. But now that Star Trek: Discovery is officially over, will Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery return for season 6 or a movie on Paramount+?

Star Trek' s next live-action Paramount+ series and movies, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 3 and 4, Star Trek: Section 31 , and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 are all spinoffs of Star Trek: Discovery.

As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.

Will Star Trek: Discovery Season 6 Happen?

Discovery has taken its last ride..

There are no known plans for Star Trek: Discovery season 6. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 contained multiple endings that concluded the story of Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery. The original ending of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 consisted of the wedding of Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) while Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) resumed their love story just in time for their next adventure. Star Trek: Discovery 's series finale epilogue flashed forward decades to send off the USS Discovery to its ultimate destiny.

Paramount Studios is up for sale, which will inevitably affect future Star Trek projects.

However, Star Trek: Discovery s eason 5's ending doesn't preclude season 6 were it to be greenlit by Paramount+. Discovery 's finale epilogue scenes simply mean audiences learn what happens to Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery in the far future, but there is plenty of time before that to tell more stories about the USS Discovery and its crew. Star Trek: Discovery has wrapped, but it's possible the cast and crew could reunite for season 6 after some time has passed.

Will Star Trek: Discovery Get A Paramount Plus Streaming Movie?

Five seasons... and a movie.

A streaming movie on Paramount+ is a potential option for a continuation of Star Trek: Discovery . A plan to feature a new Star Trek movie on Paramount+ every 2 years kicks off when Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh premieres on the streamer. Reuniting the cast of Star Trek: Discovery for a Paramount+ movie is a definite possibility. However, there are no known plans for a Star Trek: Discovery movie and the future of Star Trek streaming movies depends on how Section 31 performs on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Section 31 is being eyed for a possible sequel if the film is a success.

What Star Trek TV Series & Movies Are Coming After Discovery Ends?

Star trek will still be going strong..

Star Trek will continue to go boldly after Star Trek: Discovery ends, with multiple announced Star Trek projects in various stages of production and development. (Executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who oversees all of Star Trek on Paramount+, says there are more unannounced Star Trek projects in the works.) Star Trek: Lower Decks will stream season 5, which is also its final season, on Paramount+ in fall 2024. Netflix is also going to premiere Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 sometime in 2024. Star Trek: Section 31 is awaiting a Paramount+ premiere date, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wrapped filming season 3 with season 4 greenlit. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will also start production in late summer 2024.

Paramount Pictures ' Star Trek movie franchise is also ramping up after nearly a decade of development hell. Paramount announced an Untitled Star Trek Origin movie directed by Toby Haynes will begin production later in 2024 for a 2025 or 2026 theatrical release. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is reportedly signing on to oversee the Star Trek theatrical movies similar to how Alex Kurtzman runs Star Trek streaming on Paramount+. Producer J.J. Abrams is also reportedly trying to launch Star Trek 4 and reunite the USS Enterprise cast led by Chris Pine. As Star Trek: Discovery heads off to its final frontier, it leaves Star Trek stronger than how it found it.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is available to stream on Paramount+

'Star Trek: Discovery' ends as an underappreciated TV pioneer

First, an admission: Though this column will offer a lot of discussion and defense of Star Trek: Discovery as a pivotal show, it won’t spend much time talking up the series’ current, final season or its finale episode, “Life, Itself,” dropping Thursday on Paramount+.

That’s because, for this critic, the last few seasons of Discovery have been a bit bogged down by the stuff that has always made it a tough sell as a Trek series: overly ambitious, serialized storylines that aren’t compelling; new characters and environments that don’t impress; plot twists which can be maddening in their lack of logic; big storytelling swings which can be confusing and predictable at once.

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

The show’s finale features the culmination of a sprawling scavenger hunt which found the crew of the starship Discovery bounding all over the place, searching for clues leading to a powerful technology pioneered by an alien race which created humanoid life throughout the galaxy. Their goal was to grab the technology before another race, ruthless and aggressive, could beat them to it, laying waste to everything.

It's no spoiler to reveal that Discovery ’s heroes avoid that nightmarish scenario, wrapping its fifth and final season with a conclusion centered on Sonequa Martin-Green’s ever-resourceful Capt. Michael Burnham and fond resolutions for a multitude of supporting characters (there’s even a space wedding!)

Still, this good-enough ending belies Discovery ’s status as a pioneering show which helped Paramount+ build a new vision for Star Trek in modern television – breaking ground that more creatively successful series like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would follow years later.

And it all began with a singular character: Michael Burnham.

A take on Star Trek for modern TV

Discovery debuted in 2017 on CBS All Access — the streaming service which would become Paramount+ — facing a serious challenge.

As the first new Trek series in a dozen years, it had to chart a path which offered a new vision of the franchise without going too far — carving out a new corner in the universe of Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock not long after the release of Star Trek Beyond , the third feature film produced by J. J. Abrams featuring rebooted versions of those classic characters.

Producers set Discovery ’s story 10 years before the days of Kirk and Spock (originally depicted on NBC for three seasons starting way back in 1966). The new series wouldn’t be centered on a starship captain, but its second in command: Burnham, a Black woman who also happened to be the hitherto unknown adopted daughter of Vulcan ambassador Sarek, Spock’s father (she would get promoted to captain of Discovery much later).

A Black human woman who was raised among the emotionally controlling, super-intellectual Vulcans? Who Trek fans had never heard of over nearly 60 years? Before I actually saw any episodes, my own feelings ranged from cautiously intrigued to cynically pessimistic.

But then I saw the first episode, which had an amazing early scene: Martin-Green as Burnham and Michelle Yeoh as Discovery Capt. Philippa Georgiou walking across an alien planet – two women of color marking the first step forward for Star Trek on a new platform.

People once sidelined in typical science fiction stories were now centerstage — a thrilling, historic moment.

And it got better from there. Back in the day, Trek writers often felt hamstrung by creator Gene Roddenberry’s insistence that, in the future depicted by the show, humans were beyond social ills like greed, prejudice, sexism, war, money and personal friction. The writers chafed, wondering: How in the world do you build compelling stories on a starship where interpersonal human conflict doesn’t exist?

But Discovery found a workaround, putting Burnham in a position where logic led her to mutiny against her captain, attempting a strategy which ultimately failed — leaving humans in open combat with the legendarily warlike Klingons. Discovery also featured a long storyline which played out over an entire season, unlike many earlier Trek shows which tried to offer a new adventure every week.

'First, Last And Always, I Am A Fan': Michael Chabon Steers Latest 'Star Trek'

'First, Last And Always, I Am A Fan': Michael Chabon Steers Latest 'Star Trek'

The show’s first season had plenty of action, with Harry Potter alum Jason Isaacs emerging as a compelling and unique starship captain (saying more would be a spoiler; log onto Paramount+ and check out the first season). Fans saw a new vision for Trek technology, leveraging sleek, visceral special effects and action sequences worthy of a big budget movie, with design elements cribbed from several of the franchise’s films.

Later in its run, Discovery would debut Ethan Peck as Spock and Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, classic Trek characters who eventually got their own acclaimed series in Strange New Worlds . So far, five other Trek series have emerged on Paramount+ from ideas initially incubated on Discovery – including a critically acclaimed season of Picard which reunited the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Not bad for a series one TV critic eventually called among “the worst in the [ Trek ] franchise’s history.”

Discovery’s unappreciated legacy

Unfortunately, Discovery has taken some turns which didn’t work out quite so well. At the end of Discovery ’s second season, the starship jumped ahead in time nine centuries – perhaps to remove it from Strange New World ’s timeline? – placing it in an environment only distantly connected to classic Trek .

And while Discovery initially seemed cautious about referencing classic Trek in its stories, later series like Strange New Worlds and Picard learned the value of diving into the near-60-year-old franchise’s legacy – regularly tapping the show’s longtime appeal, rather than twisting into knots to avoid it.

There are likely fans of Discovery who would disagree with this analysis. But I think it helps explain why the series has never quite gotten its due in the world of Star Trek , initially shaded by skeptical fans and later overshadowed by more beloved products.

Now is the perfect time to pay tribute to a show which actually accomplished quite a lot – helping prove that Roddenberry’s brainchild still has a lot of narrative juice left in the 21st Century.

Trek 54cm Discovery Channel edition road bike?

  • Add to quote

Hello all! I'm new to the forums and looking at getting into cycling. I've been to my local bike shop and was sized for a 54cm road bike. The guy at the shop was showing me a few entry level Treks. Now I know buying a used bike isn't the best of ideas but I'd rather buy a used bike and see If I really like cycling rather then spending 1k+ on one and not liking it. I'd buy a used bike (54cm is my size according to shop) then bring it to them, have them fit it to me and go over it. With that said I've been looking around and came across this.. https://i44.tinypic.com/259x1sk.jpg[/img] Excellent condition, tires are like new. Has carbon fork and tiarga components. Can anyone give me some insight on this bike? I don't know much (past week or so I've been researching bikes). Are the components on it good? What would you value the bike at? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Discovery Channel? That was 2005. Bikes have progressed since then IMHO.

Understood. Do you have any info regarding the bike pictured? Possible year? Components good? Value the bike at? Sorry for all the questions as I'm new and haven't even touched the surface of the cycling world. Thank you for your post though.

How much are they selling it for? Tiagra is pretty much bottom of the barrel when it comes to the shimano component hierarchy. Unless it is really cheap, I don't think this is the best bike for you.

trek discovery channel 2006

I wouldn't pay more than 350 for it. It doesn't suck, but that's all entry level stuff on an entry level frame. imo you might as well go to Performance for a bike that costs a bit more and has a warranty.

trek discovery channel 2006

Yeah, that's a pretty basic bike and something you'll grow out of soon, if you catch the cycling bug bad.

Thanks for the replies guys. Like I said I just want to find something for a good price that is good quality to start with. I'd rather not pay $1,500 for an entry/beginner bike then not like it and the bike sits around. The bike I posted the seller was asking $500. Any recommendations would be great.

IMHO, I would go for a new low end tiara/105 groupset road bike from a place such as performance biycles. They have good bikes for pretty decent prices and they go on sale quite often. Here is a great bike they have in size 54 for on sale at $800. 2013 Scattante R570 Road Bike - Endurance Bikes

Tiagra in 2005 is nothing compared to what it is now. The frame is probably OK. You'd be better off getting the bike for $400, then upgrading to newer 105 or Ultegra. BTW, my wife went from a 2005 Trek carbon frame to the 2012 Cannondale carbon frame and couldn't believe the difference.

An 8 year old "Tiagra" level bike is not worth $500, in my opinion. Like someone said, maybe $350 max. People around here tend to put a premium on that particular brand for some reason - I don't think there's any reason for it. On the other hand, an 8 year old bike isn't necessarily a bad thing. There's a lot of them with just a few hundred or couple thousand miles on them, and they have long carefree lives ahead of them. Hard to advise you on a used bike at a distance, but I'm a big fan of them, but I like to put time and effort into finding them, and also know what to look for.

$500 is too much for that bike, but I can ride a 9 speed tiagra bike the same way I can ride a $5000 dura ace bike. Don't listed to the people saying it's going to hold you back or some other nonsense. What will hold you back is your legs. I bought a used raleigh aluminum bike for $275 on craigslist a while back and I'm just as fast on it as my di2 carbon bmc fwiw. If it was $350 It would be a great bike and if you wanted something fancier down the road you could use it as a backup.

^^^^what he said, at $350 you are getting a fair price, at $400 plus it is way too high. Decent beginner bike though it is not a Tiagra bike, it is Sora and the new price was $679 MSRP. It is a Trek 1000 series and the Discovery Channel logos do not add value. Good basic, entry level bike. I would offer $275 and make a deal at $325.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to give him a call and see if he'll come down on price but I don't seem him coming down that low but worth a shot!

Star Trek: Discovery Just Pulled Off the Heist of the Century

S tar Trek: Discovery has always had a bit of a problem with the penultimate episodes of its seasons—episodes that have to come to some sort of juddering climactic halt for whatever’s happening that week, to set up the dire stakes coming in the finale episode the week after. At long last, as the series looks to its very last episode, it’s managed to at last pull it off: an episode that feels great as it is, while also effectively setting that final stage.

“Lagrange Point” is a deceptively simple episode for one that ultimately has to leave a lot on the table for next week’s final send off for the show. The tension is non-stop, as the Discovery finds itself failing in a race against time and Moll’s Breen forces—themselves being chased by fleets of rival Breen ships, who’ve learned of Primarch Rhun’s death after last week’s shenanigans —and failing, when they both manage to make to to the seeming location of the Progenitor tech, only for Moll’s ship to scoop up the mysterious package before Discovery can. But that means one thing and one thing only can help our heroes: heist time? Heist time.

For as beloved a Trek trope as infiltrating enemy bases and heists are, Discovery’s not actually done anything quite like this before, but it clearly has a lot of fun in doing so here. There’s a great little scene in Burnham’s ready room where they lay out the plan of action—two teams of two, Alpha (Reese and Adira) and Bravo (Michael and Book), will sneak aboard the Breen flagship disguised as foot soldiers, with one team planting a transport tracker on the Progenitor tech, and the other infiltrating the bridge to lower shields in time for everyone and their prize package to transport-poof-out in an instant. But aside from the heisty vibes, what makes it so fun is something we get to then see throughout the episode: Star Trek is, at its core, a series about competence porn, and beautiful people being smart and doing things they’re extremely good at, extremely well. Everyone in this room, from Adira all the way up to Michael, knows that they can do this, and instead of simply being told that, we get to watch them prove it over the next 40 minutes or so.

And it’s exactly that: a fun heist! Throughout, aboard Discovery, we get to see Rayner lead the bridge crew in preparing for any eventuality, a nice little release on his season-long arc of not entirely being sure he belongs with this crew. Back at Federation HQ, we also get to see Saru’s return, as he’s thrust into the Federation’s last-ditch diplomatic effort to try and get the chasing Breen forces to not engage Moll and Discovery. And then of course, on the Breen ship there’s all the heisty action. We get some great little moments of each team having to try and pretend to be aggressive Breen to fit in; Michael and Book even manage to sneak in a quiet moment together to look back on their relationship just in case everything’s about to go to hell; and of course, there’s inevitably a good couple of scraps when their cover is nearly (and then actually) blown. There’s a lot of tension that there perhaps otherwise wouldn’t be if this wasn’t the penultimate season of the entire—where we might safely assume that everyone will be fine, because there’s another season of Discovery around the corner. There’s no season around the corner this time! Everyone might not be fine! Well, except for the fact that like we said, this is a bunch of people who have, after five seasons, assured themselves and the audience alike that they’re really good at their jobs, and everything goes off damn near perfectly.

For the most part. After all, this is the penultimate episode of the season, and not a regular one, so it would be a pretty bold move for everything to go perfectly for our heroes with one episode still left to go. After Michael and Book get discovered planting the tracking device, the action ramps up even further as Discovery has to get involved as a distraction, decloaking from its vantage point to launch a hail mary charge at the Breen ship’s shuttle bay, in the hopes it can essentially ran a hole in its shielding structure and blast the Progenitor package and the captured crew out into space, picking them up there. Again, fun! Again, tense! Again, people who are good at their jobs being good at them! You can’t really ask for more than that, but at the same time, again that would make for a very dull set-up for a series finale if everyone just got what they wanted without a hitch.

So, in a final act of desperation, Moll—who has been sending Breen after Breen into the opened package to try and investigate the mysterious portal within, with none of them returning no matter what they try—leaps inside the Progenitor package/portal too. And Michael being Michael, she cannot help but leap in after her, hoping that whatever’s in there isn’t immediately lethal. So, even as Discovery slams into the Breen shuttlebay, beams everyone but Michael back aboard, and makes it out in (mostly) one piece, the Progenitor package cracks open to reveal a mysterious portal... and seemingly no signs of what could be beyond it or even if Michael is alive. The stage is set for our final episode on this cliffhanger, but again, it’s set up really well across this whole episode, instead of feeling like a cliffhanger that slams in out of nowhere on an otherwise loosely related adventure. Again and again, “Lagrange Point” hits home to us that our heroes are good at what they do, regardless of the odds, and so we get that again in another cathartic release on the Discovery bridge to end the episode: Rayner, no longer dancing around it, but sitting in the captain’s chair with a rousing message to the team—his team—that they’re going to save the day and get their captain back.

We’ll find out next week just how they do it, but given the confidence on display here? There’s very little doubt they’ll send themselves, and Discovery as a show, off with anything but an extremely competent bang.

Unfortunately, Discovery has taken some turns which didn’t work out quite so well.

'Star Trek: Discovery' ends as an underappreciated TV pioneer

Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham.

Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou and Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham in the very first episode of Star Trek: Discovery.

Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham standing on the bridge in a still from Star Trek Discovery

The week has barely started (if you’re in the U.S. and reading this on the Monday holiday: even less so!), and already there’s a whole lot of TV to get through.

With any luck, the long weekend gave you some time to catch up with things — after all, as our summer preview is any indication, there’s only gonna be even more coming soon. But while a bunch of new stuff might be coming up, there’s plenty to watch this week alone. Under the Bridge and Hacks are both wrapping up really strong seasons, while shows like Pyramid Game and We Are Lady Parts are just ramping up.

Here are all the best new TV premieres and finales this week.

New shows on Netflix

Vincent believes his son will come back if only he can get Eric, a monster based on a drawing his son did, to the screen.

Genre: Teen show Release date: May 30 Based on the book by: Holly Smale Cast: Emily Carey, Sarah Parish, Emmanuel Imani, and more

New shows on Hulu

Imogen (Elisabeth Moss) kneeling behind a car with a gun out

Genre: Spy thriller Release date: May 28 Showrunner/creator: Steven Knight Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Yumna Marwan, Josh Charles, and more

The stage is set in London for a deadly attack. But Imogen (Elisabeth Moss) and Adilah (Yumna Marwan) are also on the move. And with Imogen keeping her master plan secret from even us, it seems likely that this attack could go either way.

Under the Bridge finale

Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in a still from Under the Bridge

Genre: True-crime mystery Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creator: Samir Mehta, Quinn Shephard Cast: Lily Gladstone, Riley Keough, and more

There’s nothing about the murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) that feels easy to swallow, and it’s a testament to Under the Bridge that the show has been able to balance the complexities of that reality in its seven episodes so far. Now, it’s coming to a close — one that no doubt will carry the weight of every ounce of tragedy in this story.

New shows on Max

Hacks season 3 finale.

Deborah (Jean Smart) sits smiling with Ava (Hannah Einbinder) on the arm of her chair in a still from Hacks

New shows on Paramount Plus

Genre: Thriller Release date: May 30, with all 10 episodes Showrunner/creator: Choi Sui Cast: Bona, Jang Da-a, Ryu Da-in, and more

And then she’s introduced to a new ranking system that lets people secretly vote for who they think should be a class outcast. Now, Su-ji has to decide whether to keep going along (and possibly accepting the violence that comes with it) or else lead an uprising against this shadowy “Pyramid Game.”

Star Trek: Discovery series finale

L-R Alfredo Narciso as Ohvahz and Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery. They are wearing hand-made alien garments, and conversing calmly while sitting on the floor in a stone room.

Genre: Star Trek Release date: May 30 Showrunner/creator: Akiva Goldsman Cast: Sonequa Martin-Green, Mary Wiseman, Doug Jones, and more

The end of an era! By which I mean not only the season we got of 900 years in Star Trek’s future, but also Discovery , which wraps up this Thursday. It’s the end of the first Star Trek show of the modern era, and is free in a way Star Trek hasn’t been in a long, long while , all while paving the way for more Trek to come.

New shows on Peacock

We are lady parts season 2.

Genre: “Yeah, I’m in a band” teen comedy Release date: May 30, with all episodes Showrunner/creator: Nida Manzoor Cast: Anjana Vasan, Sarah Kameela Impey, Juliette Motamed, and more

We Are Lady Parts is back and ready to record their debut album. Which means it’s the perfect time for more bandmate shenanigans — including battling a rival Muslim band, playing a festival, exploring your “villain era.” All that and Malala Yousafzai is supposed to show up sometime this season!

New shows on Apple TV Plus

Loot season 2 finale.

Genre: Comedy Release date: May 29 Showrunner/creators: Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard Cast: Maya Rudolph, Joel Kim Booster, Nat Faxon, and more

The Wells Foundation — and Molly (Maya Rudolph), the billionaire woman who runs it — are nearing their greatest success yet. Which, of course, means reality is about to come crashing in with some major personal decisions. How will the dust settle in the season 2 finale?

New shows on Showtime

Couples therapy season 4.

Genre: Documentary series Release date: May 31, with one episode; on-air premiere at 10 p.m. EDT on June 2 Showrunner/creator: Dr. Orna Guralnik Cast: Real-life couples in therapy

It’s a new season of Couples Therapy, and an all-new cast of couples to undergo real therapy with Dr. Orna. The result will be unpredictable — couples therapy, after all, is about figuring yourselves out together, not necessarily saving the relationship. The good news? It will most likely be cathartic, one way or another.

After Richard Dreyfuss’ son comments on father’s rant, he tries to set record straight

It might have looked as if Ben Dreyfuss, the son of actor Richard Dreyfuss, distanced himself from his father’s latest controversy by light-heartedly addressing the dust-up the Oscar winner recently had at a recent “Jaws” screening.

But when he was talking about “disgusting outrageous behavior” of one of his family members, he was not in fact talking about his 76-year-old father.

The elder Dreyfuss — who starred in “Jaws” and “American Graffiti” — caused a stir at the Cabot in Beverly, Mass., after allegedly ranting about women, LGBTQ+ individuals and the #MeToo movement, prompting several patrons to walk out of the theater. The incident also resulted in a formal apology from the venue, which said it deeply regretted the “distress” it caused.

Richard Dreyfuss’ ‘distressing and offensive’ rant has prompted a Massachusetts theater to apologize

‘Jaws’ star Richard Dreyfuss made controversial remarks at a recent screening at the Cabot that prompted the theater to apologize to its patrons.

May 28, 2024

The younger Dreyfuss, who is a journalist and who played a younger version of his father’s character in “Madoff,” made light of the situation in a Monday tweet.

“Re: my father: well, now you know why I refused to give him the password to his own twitter account for a decade lol” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “This will be my only statement on the matter. thank you.”

But it wasn’t. As media picked up the his apparent reaction , Ben Dreyfuss clarified that a prior tweet he sent about the “disgusting outrageous behavior” of one of his relatives was misconstrued. Ben Dreyfuss said he was simply quipping about the fact that his sister now uses an Android phone.

“This @DailyMail article mischaracterizes this thread,” he added in a follow-up tweet. “I am obviously not a left-wing activist and the ‘joke’ wasn’t the part about his twitter account, it was the part about the disgusting outrageous behavior (of my sister adopting android).”

“I did not call my dad’s behavior ‘disgusting’ or ‘outrageous’ since I wasn’t there and didn’t see it!” he continued. “My dad and I disagree about lots of stuff. But it’s a free country. People are allowed to have different opinions about stuff.”

His father’s opinions — purportedly made before a screening of “Jaws” on Saturday — certainly clashed with several patrons of the 850-seat Cabot theater. According to the venue’s executive director, J. Casey Soward, an estimated 125 people left the sold-out event and he encountered many who were “really distraught” about Dreyfuss’ behavior and comments.

In a YouTube video that appears to be from the event, Dreyfuss danced onto the stage wearing a dress over his button-up shirt while Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” played. Two stagehands came onstage and removed the dress as Dreyfuss mimicked a striptease before putting on a blazer and taking his seat ahead of the screening. It’s unclear why the actor made such an entrance; representatives for Dreyfuss could not immediately be reached for comment.

Although an account of “The Goodbye Girl” Oscar winner’s full remarks has yet to emerge, Dreyfuss is reported to have delivered “a hate-filled speech that disparaged women in film, the #MeToo movement and LGBTQ rights.” The actor also took aim at his “Nuts” producer Barbra Streisand, whom he called both a “genius” and an “idiot,” and shared “bigoted opinions” on transgender kids and their parents, the Hollywood Reporter and Deadline said. (Last May, Dreyfuss also aimed at the Academy Awards’ efforts to foster diversity, which he said “make me want to vomit.”)

Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss slammed the film academy for what he considers ‘patronizing’ diversity and inclusion efforts. ‘They make me vomit,’ he said.

May 8, 2023

According to the Boston Globe , the “Mr. Holland’s Opus” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” star also disparaged trans rights, making a pointed remark that sparked the first wave of walkouts.

“It’s not OK because when the kid’s 15, she’s going to say, ‘I’m an octopus,’” he said, according to the Globe. The statement angered many in the audience, who shouted at Dreyfuss. Others walked out.

“He got booed and then said, ‘Oh, it’s gonna be one of those kinds of crowds’ or something like that,” Soward told the newspaper. Dreyfuss, who founded the Dreyfuss Civics Initiative in 2006, also lamented the state of civics education in the United States, urging audience members to “make sure your kids are not the last generation of Americans. And you know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Soward, like the patrons, apparently did not expect the outspoken star to go off in such a way.

“Sometimes people go to see a comedian who has these views and it’s well known. They’re kind of opting in for that experience,” Soward said. “But in this case, people thought they were going to see a screening of a movie and maybe hear some anecdotes from the movie.”

L.A. Times’ original 1975 review of ‘Jaws’ unearthed: We hated it

E ditor’s note: This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” a revolutionary film for the director, movie soundtracks and skinny-dippers everywhere.

June 20, 2015

The director told the Globe that as soon as people starting walking out, he began crafting an apology that was emailed to ticketholders. The Cabot on Tuesday released a full statement attributed to Soward that apologized for Dreyfuss’ remarks and for not anticipating the potentially inflammatory nature of his appearance.

“We are aware of, and share serious concerns, following the recent event with Richard Dreyfuss prior to a screening of the film ‘Jaws’ at The Cabot,” the statement said. “The views expressed by Mr. Dreyfuss do not reflect the values of inclusivity and respect that we uphold as an organization. We deeply regret the distress that this has caused to many of our patrons.

“We regret that an event that was meant to be a conversation to celebrate an iconic movie instead became a platform for political views. We take full responsibility for the oversight in not anticipating the direction of the conversation and for the discomfort it caused to many patrons,” the statement continued.

The Cabot said that it is “in active dialogue” with its patrons about their experience and is committed to learning from this event “how to better enact our mission of entertaining, educating, and inspiring our community.”
